McAfee Total Protection suite 2008, 2009 - MAJOR FLAW

Q: McAfee Total Protection suite 2008, 2009 - MAJOR FLAW

This is one of the major flaws with McAfee Total Protected which, as of Aug 2009, still remains to be an issue for many owners. There was some conversation among McAfee forum administrators that the ability to manage the ?Trusted Programs? list would be added (back) to their Total Protection suite, prior to the release of Microsoft IE 8. Obviously, McAfee did not keep that promise.

Without this ability, McAfee *will* mark legitimate applications (files / programs) as POTENTIALLY UNWANTED PROGRAMS (PUP) and thereby quarantine them ? rendering your apps useless.

Preferred Solution: McAfee Total Protection suite 2008, 2009 - MAJOR FLAW

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: McAfee Total Protection suite 2008, 2009 - MAJOR FLAW

Although McAfee's (home) products lack an Exclusion or ?Trusted Programs? option, you do have the option to upload the False Positive to McAfee's labs, where if the file is determined legit, you will most likely be supplied with an EXTRA.DAT to cover the FP until McAfee's main database is officially updated. They are usually pretty quick to respond and you should receive the EXTRA.DAT within a couple of hours. I've had very few FP's with McAfee in 3 years of use and I'm a fairly heavy computer user. They have quite a low level of FP detections compared to some other Antivirus vendors. AVG had one such (fairly big) FP just the other day.

My pc was infected and restored factory settings. After I installed Mcafee total protection 2009, i found some strange entries in the firewall access program.
I was checking the firewall program permission (for the first time), when i found following strange entries,

Program Name File Name Permissions
(Program no longer exists) mcdetect.exe full permission
(program no longer exists) MVTX.exe full permission

All this seems to be Mcafee related entries. but why a freshly installed program would have strange entries? should i go ahead and remove the 'full permission' for this entries?
Also there is a startup entry (ran Hijackthis to see if my pc is clean), for which i couldn't find any details.

Hi Guch. . .

Good to see you again back here at the Tech Support Forum.

What exactly is the problem that you are having? Also, is the issue with Spaywareblaster 4 or with Spyware Doctor 5.5 or all?

One thing that I can tell you is that running more than one installed anti-virus package often leads to one labelling the other's files(s) as viral - a false positive. They are in competition.

Thank you for your help.
Came home today and opened my laptop. Found that my homepage opened very slowly. Tried to enter another site and found that it would not open. Tried another then a third - same results. Glanced down at the bottom right of the screen and noticed that my McAfee shield was gone. Looked for it - nowhere to be found.
Went in through startup and found it that way. Ran a scan - but found nothing. Still Real-time Scanning not working. Tried to turn it on - it immediately kicked off. Tried again - kicked off again. Still have time remaining on my subscription.
Deleted browsing history also.
Have now opened up into safe mode and contacting you that way. Thanks.

I will be helping you with your problems. Please be patient while I assist you.
Some points for you to keep in mind while I am helping you to make things go easier and faster for both of us
Please do NOT run, install or uninstall any programs,  unless instructed to do so.
We ask you to run different tools in a specific order to ensure the malware is completely removed from your machine, and running any additional tools may detect false positives, interfere with our tools, or cause unforeseen damage or system instability.

Please do not attach logs or use code boxes, just copy and paste the text.
Due to the high volume of logs we receive it helps to receive everything in the same format, and code boxes make the logs very difficult to read. Also, attachments require us to download and open the reports when it is easier to just read the reports in your post.

Please provide feedback about your experience as we go.
A short statement describing how the computer is working helps us understand where to go next, for example: I am still getting redirected, the computer is running normally, etc. Please do not describe the computer as "the same", this requires the extra step of looking back at your previous post.

In another forum, it has been requested that I run ComboFix which of course requires all AV products to be disabled.

I had McAfee Total Protection installed but it lapsed due to the contract expiring while the PC was totally out and payment not being made.. I can open it but every function is greyed out so I cannot make changes.

I continually get pop ups reminding me that there is no coverage until payment is made; I assumed that meant that it is disabled.

When I ran combofix, it said that McAfee AV and McAfee anti spyware are running but combofix will continue although the results will not be reliable.

Is there another way to "disable" McAfee? Stopping processes? Stopping services?

Thanks for any assistance.

Installation is very quick and easy.

Taking up to 35-40 MB RAM when idle.
Quick scan nearly takes 5 mins.

Firewall is easily configurable.

Interface is very simple. I guess its because its a beta version. Mcafee total protection 2009 has a different GUI altogether.

Will check on the detections and heuristics later.

Overall a very nice product. But can slow down old computers.
Nevertheless, if you've got 4 GB RAM, would you mind giving 40-50 MB towards security?

After unsuccessful attempts to renew my Internet Security subscription, I contacted McAfee Tech support, they remote controlled my Acer Aspire3830T laptop and had a go, but also failed;finally I was told there's a problem with my Internet Explorer 11 and since it came preinstalled with Windows 10, I can't find a way to uninstall, reinstall, fix it, or even find out what the problem is!!? any suggestions would be greatly appreciated  sincHarry

A:Re: Renewal of McAfee Total Protection subscriptio...

You might just want to look at other protection options, the 'problem' with IE 11 is likely a support person getting tired of working for a solution rather than a real issue. I've been quite pleased with the built-in Microsoft Defender anti-virus and the big update coming next Tuesday seems to make it even more useful.

Since I don't know what the problem is, I'm not sure where to post this...

I uninstalled McAfee Total Protection on my desktop and laptop because, while both were protected by McAfee, neither would "trust" the other on my home network. The reinstall on my laptop is working fine. The desktop is the problem.

A McAfee tier II tech took control of my desktop for over two hours, to no avail. He said the problem must be one or more Windows XP corrupt or missing files. He went though my registry and deleted all entries mentioning McAfee before his last reinstall attempt.

Via Microsoft's website, I confirmed my XP files contain all the latest updates.

Here's what else I've run:
sfc /scannow
Spybot S&D
McAfee's Virtual Technician, Preinstall, MGPR and Security Scan Plus programs
ParetoLogic's PC Health Advisor

I did discover and have eliminated about six bogus network adaptors (all with McAfee in the desriptors). They disappeared when I updated the drivers from a pop-up menu, which looked to be from McAfee. I am puzzled about this but don't know if it's relevant.

I really do want to avoid uninstalling and reinstalling Windows XP if at all possible.

My McAfee Security system expired and I purchased the McAfee Total protection. When it installs, it states it is uninstalling older versions of McAfee software. It works fine for a few days, then when something updates and my computer is rebooted I get a message that my computer is at risk and my McAfee Security system is expired. Is anyone successfully running McAfee (or another AV) and Windows Defender at the same time?

A:McAfee Total Protection & Windows Defender

If the installation process for an AV app turns off (disables) Windows Defender, the you should not try to run Windows Defender with that particular AV app. There are a few AV apps that leave Windows Defender enabled.

I would suggest uninstalling McAfee Total Protection and using Microsoft Security Essentials or Panda. McAfee does not have a good reputation in these forums.

i'm told it shouldn't be disabled but i can't have it running i don't know if there is anybody else having this problem....

so i'm not sure what to do...

A:Mcafee Total Protection 2007 Problem

mcnasvc.exe = McAfee Network Agent - required to run on startupmcmscsvc.exe = McAfee ServicesAlthough McAfee is as good as any other well known anti-virus program, it has become a resource hog that slows down your system especially if on dial-up or if installed on older systems without much RAM/slow CPU. McAfee requires numerous services and more than a dozen running files that use a lot of memory. Further McAfee products, like Symantec, are becoming difficult to remove. You may want to consider switching to another anti-virus program. See BC's Freeware Replacements For Common Commercial Apps.

McAfee Total Protection suite is now available supporting Windows 7 Beta version 7000 only. If you would like to test our software using Windows7 please uninstall your current MTP suite prior to upgrading to or installing Windows7 then reinstall our software. The MTP suite for Windows7 includes MSC, VirusScan and Personal Firewall only. In addition Maintain Computer and Manage Network are also disabled for this initial MTP Beta with Windows7 Beta version 7000

With the recent update released Feb. 13, you will notice that Maintain Computer and Manage Network features are missing. We are currently verifiying our products to support Windows 7 Beta, and have released a condensed version of our MTP suite with this initiative. Maintain Computer and Manage Network are currently under such verification and will be enabled once complete. If you wish to test running Windows7 Beta, you will need to uninstall your current McAfee Beta products, install or upgrade to Windows7 (uprgrade from Vista only), and then reinstall our condensed suite of MSC, Virus Scan and Personal Firewall only. Products will be enabled as we continue Windows7 supportability verifications.

Hey guys (girls),

New user here. I'm trying to find a bypass as to how to manually update McAfee Internet Security 2009. I have several computers at home that do not have internet access on the regular. Does anyone have any tips? I have the current definitions from McAfee that I can burn onto a disc, but every option I've exhausted doesn't work.

-Manually removed the previous .dat version, tried swapping in the new .dat from McAfee
-Tried using the super.dat install package you can use with the Corporate version
-Tried patching in the new w/ the current .dat file also, but no luck

Thanks in advance for the help!

A:Manually Updating Mcafee Virus Definitions 2009 Internet Security Suite

With the following system requirements: System RequirementsMicrosoft Windows 2000 (32-bit) with Service Pack 4 (SP4) or higher,Windows XP (32-bit) with Service Pack 1 (SP1) or higher,Windows Vista (32 or 64-bit)800 X 600 or higher resolution256 MB RAM150 MB of available free drive spaceInternet connectionMicrosoft Internet Explorer 6.0 or later.Optional: Mozilla Firefox 1.5 or laterAnd nothing in the user manual even remotely mentioning the ability. It appears that it's not possible. And I would have to say discussion of how to potentially accomplish an update offline given the preceding comments have a likelihood of violating one of the forum rules which state. No subject matter will be allowed whose purpose is to defeat existing copyright or security measures. If a user persists and/or the activity is obviously illegal the staff reserves the right to remove such content and/or ban the user. This would also mean encouraging the use or continued use of pirated software is not permitted, and subject to the same consequences.Unless someone can confirm that McAfee supports offline updating with documentation. I do understand your dilema without Internet access however the information presented could be used to defeat copyright or security measures. Hopefully someone can find a McAfee supported answer.

I think I've found a major flaw in the audio systems for Windows 7. I'm not sure if it could just be my computer, but it's quite annoying, since I change audio ports a lot for recording.

What happens is if I change my Sound out -> Headphones/Speakers port to the other one like lets say from Headphone port (front) to the Speakers port (back) all my sounds will completely cut out, and Windows will begin to lag until I restart my computer. In iTunes, if I try to play a song at this point, iTunes will either lock up or refuse to play the song.

I am running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit.
My sound card is a Realtek HD Integrated Audio Chipset.

I just read this article on IE having a major security issue and I have to say it makes me very concerned. They say to use Firefox, Chrome, or Opera. Are these really secure?Which is the best one? Here is the article: http://tech.yahoo.com/blogs/null/111811Thanks

A:Major flaw revealed in Internet Explorer

IE has always been targeted by hackers and malware programmers because it has the lion's share of the browser market and will cause the most disruption (just as they like it) This makes vulnerabilities look worse than they are.

I think there is a general move to recommend alternative browsers such as Firefox or Opera because of this and there is certainly no big reason to stick with IE other than familiarity.

My advice is to try FF or Opera (or Chrome, though this is still in the early stages) and see what you think. The basic features are similar in style and use so it isn't a big step.

Of course, If (or some people would say, when) FF overtakes IE and the malware developers switch their attention to another browser they may decide to offer advice the other way

Android is the most popular mobile operating system on Earth: About 80 percent of smartphones run on it. And, according to mobile security experts at the firm Zimperium, there's a gaping hole in the software — one that would let hackers break into someone's phone and take over, just by knowing the phone's number.
Just A Text
In this attack, the target would not need to goof up — open an attachment or download a file that's corrupt. The malicious code would take over instantly, the moment you receive a text message.
"This happens even before the sound that you've received a message has even occurred," says Joshua Drake, security researcher with Zimperium and co-author of Android Hacker's Handbook. "That's what makes it so dangerous. [It] could be absolutely silent. You may not even see anything."
Here's how the attack would work: The bad guy creates a short video, hides the malware inside it and texts it to your number. As soon as it's received by the phone, Drake says, "it does its initial processing, which triggers the vulnerability."

Unfortunately, contract phones like Tracfone or Virginmobile never get patches.

"A major security flaw has been found in Avast's SecureZone browser, also known as Avastium, that allows an attacker to remotely read any file on the user's computer, over the Internet. Antivirus firm Avast quickly patched the embarrassing bug.

Avastium is based on Chromium, the open-source browser engine originally developed by Google for Chrome but now available for everyone. Avast modified a key security feature in Chromium, removing the protection it offers and exposing the user's filesystem to the Internet."

These "Secure browsers" Who can tell how much safer are them from other browsers outhere?, I think you should always use a browser because you know a bit about it and it works for you good and safe, not because it's named "any AV Secure Browser".

A couple of weeks ago I installed Windows 8 (fresh install from scratch, not an update) on my computer. I do a lot of web browsing and over the last couple of weeks I've been using Windows 8, I could swear the web browsing wasn't as fast at it used to be on Windows 7.
I then noticed I was having major issues bringing up my router's control panel (ASUS RT-N56U) so thinking it was my router I upgraded the firmware. Turned out, the Avast Anti-Virus I was running has issues with Windows 8. I removed AVAST and turned on Windows Defender (which in Windows 8 is also an anti-virus program now referred to MSE - Miscrosoft Security Essentials). MSE has gotten fairly good reviews so I decided to use it, for maximum compatibility with Windows 8.
However, although the router control panel would now come up okay, browsing still seemed to not be quite as fast as it used to be. I sat down at the old 5-year old Dell Desktop next to me that is running Windows 7, both computers were connected to the router via Gigabit Ethernet. I tested network speeds with Speedtest.net to make sure they were both getting the same Internet speeds (which they were.) I found a couple 'heavy' web pages to test:
www.epicurious.com (home page)
sports.yahoo.com (home page)
The browsing was MUCH faster on the Windows 7 machine!! So I decided to do more of a controlled test.

Security experts have discovered a potentially catastrophic flaw that for more than a decade has made it possible for attackers to decrypt HTTPS-protected traffic passing between Android or Apple devices and hundreds of thousands or millions of websites, including AmericanExpress.com, Bloomberg.com, NSA.gov, and FBI.gov.
In recent days, a scan of more than 14 million websites that support the secure sockets layer or transport layer security protocols found that more than 36 percent of them were vulnerable to the decryption attacks. The exploit takes about seven hours to carry out and costs as little as $100 per site. The so-called FREAK attack—short for Factoring attack on RSA-EXPORT Keys—is possible when an end user with a vulnerable device—currently known to include Android smartphones, iPhones, and Macs running Apple's OS X operating system—connects to a vulnerable HTTPS-protected website. Vulnerable sites are those configured to use a weak cipher that many had presumed had been retired long ago. At the time this post was being prepared, most Windows and Linux end-user devices were not believed to be affected.
Attackers who are in a position to monitor traffic passing between vulnerable end users and servers can inject malicious packets into the flow that will cause the two parties to use a weak 512-bit encryption key while negotiating encrypted Web sessions. Attackers can then collect some of the resulting exchange and use cloud-based comput... Read more

can access Command Prompt,reg-edit, and task manager on a computer where its disabled with no admin rights. You can do this by copying the files for Cmd,regedit, and task manager, to a writable location. Then you can edit them with a binary editor to run regardless
of the policies set up. . The reason this works is because when Microsoft was coding Windows, , they decided they'd rather have it be more open than closed. When the command line starts, it checks a value in the registry to see if it can run. When you do this
your changing the registry location it looks in. Therefore it doesn't find the restriction in the registry. As a result, it allows execution. Once you've changed this one binary value, it will work on any school, work, or home computer that has it disabled.
Also on 64 bit versions of windows 7 and 8 you also need to copy the En-US folder from System32 and paste it in the folder with the binary edited CMD file. This is so it can load all the commands properly. I am not responsible for what you do. Have fun. The
unicode strings are CMD- disablecmd, Regedit- disableregistrytools. You can also use this method to access a disabled task manager.
Note: When doing this put the files
into a place you can write to like a flash drive or the desktop, or else you won't be able to make the edits. You can do this all on a standard account. You don't need to be a Administrator.

Originally it was as easy as printing the doc to convert it and the pdf file would open once the conversion is complete...now the printing process runs but nothing happens when the printing is done. Can't import docs for conversion and the error message says that the documents were not found. Tried downloading updates for the program but it says I have the latest version. It's really freaking me out!! Any help or suggestions would be appreciated...Thanks

A:PDF Suite 2009

Open up IE and go to Tools, Internet Options, Programs and click on the Manage Add-ons button.
Click on Toolbars and extensions - your program should be listed, but it may be disabled. You can change that here.
You may also want to check the Advanced tab and make sure that "Enable third-party browser extensions" is checked.
If these don't work, try going to here:
and download the add-on for IE.

I've just done a clean install on my pc and everythingn was ok until I switched it on last night.

As soon as it connected to the 'net, it got the Total Secure 2009 virus. Now I've run the Smitfraud fix on it, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and my copy of Sophos.

All of these have been run numerous times and again this morning. Smitfraud found nothing. Malware Bytes finds a lot of files including the TS2009 and cleans them, as does Sophos.

I can have the machine completely clean, but as soon as I connect my wireless dongle, after 2 mins, they appear again.

I'm going to contact Sophos this morning as I have a big agreement with them in my offices but pulling my hair out what else I can do. The system is clean, as long as it's off the net. Just obviously need to stop it from picking them up again.

Sophos immediatetly detects and quarantines them, but Total Secure 2009 and PCHealthCentre, still install themselves in Program Files.

I contracted Total Secure 2009 malware. I'm running Windows XP. I have been able to disable the virus but as soon as I restart my computer it comes right back. I've made a copy of the hijackthis file which will be on the bottom of this message. I don't know if the malware needs to be running in order for hijackthis to catch it, I doubt it would need to be though.
Thank you in advance for helping. I rarely get viruses but I've tried both spybot and ad-aware and neither of them have worked so I'm out of ideas.
