Internet Explorer 11 Desktop Icon not Showing

Q: Internet Explorer 11 Desktop Icon not Showing

Hello all.
First time here and probably not the last on account of Murphy's Law.
My OS is Windows 7 Home Premium Edition (x64).
I installed IE11 with no problems.
Once completed, I rebooted but could not locate the IE desktop icon.
Inspected the Internet Explorer folder. All files seem to be there including the .exe file. After clicking on this IE11 .exe file, nothing happened.
Checked the Control Panel to ensure IE11 was in fact installed and that it was "activated." All in order.
This is a mystery as I have used previous versions of IE without any problems.
Any attempts, to resolve this glitch, will be appreciated greatly. Cheers.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I went though a process about two weeks ago where one of the BC experts helped restore my computer and ultimately eliminate a search engine redirect problem. The support was outstanding.

Today I noticed a new problem when I am using IE 8. I will get messages telling me the webpage has been restored but I am not able to get it back. When I close IE 8 I see Notepad Icons on my desktop with labels such as "hs_err_pid2712" The content says something about an Exception Stack Overflow.

Any ideas?

the IE icon that's normally on my desktop is gone.

the "icon" and words are there, but its a default windows icon becuz it cant find the right one.

awhile ago i installed sumthing called style xp that gives all these cool themes to xp....once i deleted the program, and one of the themes, the icon was gone.

in my start menu, the regular icon is present. justnot on the desktop.

i believe this problem is related to the themes thing becuz when i copy/create a shortcut to the ie icon on the desktop, the shortcut uses the same default (wrong) icon. when i riteclik on the shortcut + go 2 properties, and try to change icon, a msg instantly pops up and sez "windows cant find 'the path to "internet explorer.ico" that lies in an old deleted theme folder .

HI, I have a notebook with Windows 7 Home Premium 32 bit english version.Afterthat, I installed Internet Explorer 9 English version, a strange icon appear on my desktop.
It works normally (it opens up IE9)
However, if I right click this icon, it shows me some simplified chinese chracters.

I can't delete this icon.

This may be the cause:

However, it stops me from deleting or making any changes to it.
It just shows me some error messages like 'can't edit registry key'...
What could I do?

This error actually appeared after I install Internet Explorer 9 Beta Version a few monthes ago. It still exists after i upgraded to stable version.

It shows me an error message after I attempted to move that strange icon.It shows me: Error 0x80004001 Not implemented
and it asks me to use that error code to find solutions.

Below is a link to the screenshot of this strange icon

first line: open first page (works)
second line: delete (doesn't work)
third line: properties (opens up internet options)
english ones: normal

What could I do now?
Thanks in advance.

There's two settings that can cause it.

1. Right click the desktop and choose 'arrange icons by' and make sure that 'lock web items on desktop' is unchecked.

2. Open the Control Panel and select System. On the Advanced tab click the settings button under Performance. The box for 'use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop' should be checked.

hi, i've begun to really get concerned and annoying with my problem.

It never did this before, sort of out of the blue. Ive also done all sorts of virus/ad-ware scans, defrag, etc...

Everytime i reboot, desktop loads fine, all icons etc. Even virus program shows up in start bar. But the computer will laag and i cant really do anything until a few minutes pass by and the Wireless Icon shows up in the start bar. Its important since i Use it to connect to the internet.

Does anyone know why it could be taking so long to load up and start. Everything else seems to load up. After it finally shows itself, everything runs smoothly. up to 5 minutes is abnormally too long of a wait just for the wireless connection to load.

On another note, my startup does seem a little longer than nornal when it first starts before the xp logo there is a blinking dash line and it blinks longer than it use too.

Sorry for the long explanation, if anyone has any ideas please let me know. Ive also tried uninstalling wireless connection and letting it reinstall and drivers r updated.

A:Wireless Icon not showing up after boot, and desktop laags until it shows up

Check your MSCONFIG (start/run/msconfig/enter) go to the startup tab and this has what your XP loads on bootup. In there look at each entry and decide if you REALLY need it or not. BTW Spyware and ad-ware will put junk in there as well. Uncheck anything you don't want loading on startup and you will notice the PC starting quicker.

Be careful playing in this though as if you disable too many devices you can have other issues.

Hi Guys.

About 2 weeks ago the Explorer icon on the Taskbar where you can pin up to 12 shortcuts started randomly disappearing causing me to drag 'n drop them again. After about the 5th or 6th time of them disappearing and replacing them I am now only able to pin 4. I've installed no additional software during the period in which this error started appearing except a Windows Update released on June 10th, which I might add, the random disappearance of those Pinned icons had been happening. It wasn't until the 16th that it would no longer allow me to pin more than 4.

Does anyone here know where in the registry this setting is created so I can fix it to use 12 again instead of 4? I've searched the registry for Explorer Pinned, Taskbar Pinned, Taskbar Frequent, etc., all to no avail.

Here is a screenshot of what I'm speaking:

Before the 16th I could put 12 Pinned shortcuts and then they just stopped.

Thank you in advance.

Hi again,

I am helping a friend that has a Dell desktop computer that is set up with a Verizon wireless router so that his house has a secured network. He is also using an Dell Inspiron laptop. I have set up his printer so that it has wireless connectivity.

My question is that When I go start and look up the tree I find no "Connect To" which I would think should offer available wireless networks to select from. There is also NO ICON in the tray (the little monitors) to show that he is online.

The strange thing is that all works and his connectivity is fine.

What do I need to do so that I can have the icons for connectivity show in the tray and also for a listing (above help, my computer, search, etc.) when you click on start.

I've worked with lots of computers but never seen one to work like this.

Thanks for any and all help.

A:Icon In Tray Showing Internet Connectivity

Easy fixes .

To enable the Connect To listing: Right-click on Start, click on Properties. Click Customize button on Start Menu tab, then click Advanced tab. Scroll down to Network Connections, put mark in Display As Connect To Menu.

To enable the connection icon: Go to Connection, right-click, select Properties. General tab. Put check mark in Show Icon...., click OK.

Should take care of it (I hope).

I have created a VM with Windows 8.1 64 bit ISO. After the VM created at some times, File explorer and Internet Explorer links in the task bar is broken and the desktop background has became black. And no Videos, Pictures or other libraries working.

As soon as the OS installed, I automated a bat file which would do the following things.
* Disable UAC Policy
* Disable IPv6 by changing the registry.
* Delete local Admin account by logging into domain Administrator account(In AutoUnattend, I will do a auto login command, which do a auto login with domain administrator and run a bat file which will do these steps)
* Determine OS version (This to identify whether the installed OS version is higher than Windows 7.  If it is higher than Windows 7, I will invoke a auto installation of our party software)
Now, Could you please let me know why the libraries are not functioning properly and what is the reason behind broken links? I am confident that it is not happening due to the batch file or is it so?
Also, I have checked the Ease of Access Center under Control Panel.  Remove Background images check box is not selected.
Thanks, Please let me know this as soon as possible.

I do have the same problem, and a search in the MS site provides the info bound to the following link,

which ain't much helpful. Anyway I am going to remove all the protocols installed, and run windows xp setup once again using the /unattend option so that I wont have to re-install all the software existing.

Hello everyone.

Ok, the problem is when i boot up my computer and log onto a user, the wallpaper shows up and that is it. I tried pressing CTRL + ALT + DLT but nothing shows up, except for the mouse. I am not able to access anything on my computer except for when i'm in Safe mode. So I tried system restore and rolled back it back to previous checkpoints. It worked for a while, and that was it.

Once Oct 1st hit, same problem happened and I tried system restore but System restore would not be able to complete the process and fails. So now i've been stuck working in safe mode only with no success what so ever.

I've read through forums and forums for people that have the similar problem but no help what so ever. So i thought that posting my problem a log would probably help. PLEASE help, working in safe mode sucks, and keeps me very limited, and on top of that mom keeps on blaming it on me that I "broke it," when I have a computer of my own. So can someone please help me with out having to reformate the whole Family computer and losing all our files?

I am having an issue with the tart menu and desktop icons not showing up. I am running Windows XP. Explorer.exe is also not showing in the Windows Task Manager.

I ran MalwareBytes and followed the instructions and it found a few items and cleared them out. The obvious one that might contribute to the problem was:

It said the items were deleted successfully and I rebooted my system, but there still is no icons or start menu. I have an Acer Laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit, on two external Acer monitors, MS Comfort Keyboard, and over the last couple of weeks, it has begun to show some real odd problems:

- in Windows explorer on one monitor, the contents display (Right side) will flicker between "Details", and random other displays (eg "List" or "Small Icons").
- Windows desktop icons will occasionally flicker between 2 different sizes. (Seemed to be related to mouse movement, but that might be a red herring!)
- a number of unrequested shutdowns have taken place, preceded (VERY briefly) by what looks like a "Permission Denied" message box.
- when working and producing data files, occasional "Permission Denied" messages appear, but these can be overcome with a "Re-Try". Irritating but not earth-shattering.

I have set my only user ID to have full access in a bid to address the "Permission Denied" errors, and this did seem to result in a reduction...

Dear gentleman,
I encounter following issue:
I keep my PC open in my workspace.  One day last week, I restart my PC, I found there is nothing on my desktop, all black except the cursor.  I tried Ctrl+Alt+Del and start the Task Manager, and I found I cannot start the explorer.exe (other program can be started from new task)
p.s. I can perform normally in Safe Mode, everything on my desktop and seems no problem.
I search BleepingComputer and notice explorer.exe may be infected by virus, so I download the ComboFix in C drive and try to run, (given Antivirus not yet stopped warning)
In the first time, it failed to resume my desktop, so I tried to copy ComboFix on my desktop and run again.  This time, my desktop icon and explorer resumed.
By after some time (may be one day), when I restart / remote my PC, the issue happened again!  So I have to run ComboFix from my desktop again.
Question :
1) Am I doing the right thing to clean the virus?
2) Can anybody help to remove the issue permanently?
Many thanks.
p.s. I have installed AVG anti-virus, and Malwarebytes anti-malware free and scanned no problem found T-T  (installed long time ago before it happened)

Hi, my PC (Win2K) was fine until 2 days ago I discovered and cleaned a trojan. I don't know what trojan, but somehow it infects the registry key ShellExecuteHooks so I can't even clean it up easily in safe mode. Well I'm not sure how I fixed it actually , but maybe in the process it damaged my system...

Anyway, after the fix, I realized that some of the icons on my desktops are wrong. The links etc. are fine, and when I rightclick -> Properties -> Change icons, it shows the correct icon. And the strange thing is that even after I change it back to the correct icon, it still shows the incorrect one!

So suspecting the problem is with explorer.exe, I kill the process and run it again using Task Manager. Sure enough, when it loads and displays the desktop icons, all them are using the correct icon, and then suddenly in the middle the icons get changed!

Does anybody know why and how to fix it?

A:Desktop icon changed after around 1 second into boot up... explorer.exe problem?

This might be related... I have my Samsung's Natural Color program which load correctly before (it loads at start up). But after the battle with the trojan, somehow it displays error (assertion error or something). However, I can sucessfully start the loader manually after the bootup is done.

Another thing is that I used Hamachi fine. After the battle with the trojan, it can't run, and my PC becomes very unresponsive. Hamachi displays connecting -> resolving -> connected -> then back to reconnecting -> so on. After I exit Hamachi, the PC returns to normal. I've tried uninstalling, but got error when it creates the network driver.

I hope all these don't mean I need to reinstall my OS

(This thread could fall under several forums, but technically it's an XP registry change, so I put it here.)

I recently removed Zenworks and the Novell client from a workstation. If you've ever uninstalled those applications, you know it can be a serious pain sometimes, and many files are not removed.

In this case, the Application Explorer icon was left on the desktop after uninstallation. The problem is, there is no obvious way to remove it. It is plain white, and has no "Delete" option if you right click on it. So how do you make this go away? After much searching I found the answer. Maybe this will show up in a Google search and help someone else in the future.

Delete this key from the registry (XP):

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ Desktop\NameSpace\ {CF8EF420-3DF3-11d0-AC35-00C04FD9338A}

It should have the value"Application Explorer" or a custom name if you have changed it. It may be that the key "{CF8EF420-3DF3-11d0-AC35-00C04FD9338A}" is not always the same for every installation of Zenworks, so again, double check the value before you delete.

If you're removing Zenworks from many workstations, create a .reg file with the entry including a leading "-", and you can just double click it and watch the icon disappear. The easiest way to make this is to find the entry you want to delete. Export it. Edit that .reg file so there is a leading "-" in front of the entry.... Read more

A:Tip: Remove Zenworks Application Explorer Icon From Desktop

I don't know to many Netware people around here. I haven't supported it for a couple of years but I would like to know what version of Zenworks you were using. I can't say that I ever ran into this problem when I was using it. When I use to do this I would make sure that I would unregister the workstation first. Then uninstall Zenworks and then uninstall the client.

I have been using Mcaffe virus protection and am sure it removed application icons for Word, excel and powerpoint when it said it found a virus. I have re-installed these applications, but in windows explorer it still does not show icons for these file types. I have since removed mcaffe and started to use AVG free.

Can anyone please assist me. Thanks

I have been creating a website on my local machine and then viewing it in IE 7. All of the js used to work fine until randomly it no longer works. It's always given me the annoying little bar at the top that says IE blocked some scripts from running but I always used to just tell it to run them anyway and it would work. Now all of a sudden that doesn't work and infact nothing regarding js on the page works. Not even some of the simple text link effects such as bolding on click.

I have tried:
- Reinstalling IE 7
- The website in IE on other computers and it works fine
- Setting the security settings in IE to as low as possible and also just default
- Adding the tag: <!-- saved from url=(0014)about:internet --> to the page
- Other browsers on this computer and it worked fine
- Set all settings in IE back to default settings
- Googling for hours

Thanks in advance!

Recently many of the sites that I visit have the empty box with a small red X in it in place for images. At first I thought it was just the site but now it's happening on almost all sites that have a lot of images. I usually have to refresh the page three or four times before they all show up properly. It doesn't to seem to be any specific type of image I cant view. It happens with both JPEGs and GIFs.

So then I thought that it could possibly be my firewall. So I disabled it and refreshed the page again but that didn't work. So I decided to come here and get some help if possible. It is getting very frustrating.

My internet explorer icon has been deleted!
My dad tried to clear up the desktop, but he deleted the IE icon so I cannot get into the internet options without opening IE etc.
I only have a shortcut to IE now which when you right click doesn't give you any options e.g. Homepage setting, cookie deletion.
Can anyone tell me how to re-instate the icon.

Hi guys,

I apologize in advance if this is the wrong forum to be posting thread or if this question has been answered already (in which case I wouldn't mind a link or two) AND for the length of the query.

I have a bit of a funny problem. First, I pinned the internet explorer to the start menu from its location in "all programs". Having done that I deleted the shortcut (if it is that I wonder now) from the "all programs" list. I'm just weird that way. Now I do not know whether this was a direct consequence of the deletion but after a little while i noticed the internet explorer icon of the pinned shortcut had reverted to its generic version. I tried changing the icon by going into properties but that didn't work.

Strangely enough, when I looked at the original app in the program folder it had also reverted to a generic icon. So I decided to go disable the IE service from programs and features, restart my pc for it to take effect, turn it on and restart again. The icon was back in the "all programs" list but was still generic but its target in the IE folder was back to normal. I tried pinning the shortcut to no avail. So I tried pinning the original app itself. The entire list of pinned programs disappeared! And when I removed IE from the list it came back.

[ Okay then. In an effort to eliminate a possibility for the disappearing programs in the start menu, I unpinned a random app. The entire list disappeared again. If try to change ... Read more

Hello Kalaris, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Since you pinned the IE shortcut from All Programs, then the pinned items would no longer work or display properly when the target source IE shortcut from All Programs was deleted.

You will need to unpin it from the Start Menu, create a new IE shortcut directly from the IE iexplore.exe file, place that shortcut where you want to have it at, then pin that shorcut to the Start Menu.

Hope this helps,

My computer at work has been recently upgraded from Windows 2000 to XP. Funny thing is that the Internet Explorer icon (not a shortcut) doesn't show on the desktop. When I right click on the desktop to open the display properties and select the IE icon to be displayed, it still doesn't show on screen. I can only find shortcuts. They're not what I need because when you right click on a shortcut, the IE properties don't show (so you can't delete history or cookies). If I want the properties, I have to open IE.

Can you tell me how to get the real IE icon on the desktop?

Thank you

By default, the Show Desktop Icons feature is turned on for clean installations of Windows XP, but the Recycle Bin is the only icon that is put on the desktop. If you upgrade a previous version of Windows to Windows XP, all user icons remain on the desktop. By default, the My Computer, My Network Places, Internet Explorer, and My Documents icons are no longer put on the desktop for clean installations or upgrades. To add the My Computer, My Network Places, Internet Explorer, and My Documents icons back to your desktop: 1. Right-click the desktop, and then click Properties.
2. On the Desktop tab, click Customize Desktop.
3. Under Desktop icons, click to select the check boxes of the icons you want to view.
4. Click OK two times.
