Q: No power light & won't power up... swapped power adapter & v...

When plugging in the power adapter, the "charge" light does not come on, nor will the notebook power up. To rule out the HP power adapter I plugged in a Targus universal adapter (with correct polarity) and same result. Same results whether the battery is installed or not. The notebook had been in storage for several months, therefore, no recent changes. Any ideas?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

My Inspiron 15R N5110 won't come on. I've tried both battery and 2 different ac adapters. I've removed the battery, unplugged it, and held the power button for 30 seconds to discharge the system, but it still won't come on.
I took the laptop apart and everything looks alright, but the DC jack was slightly brown on top so I replaced the DC jack board. It still won't work.
I made sure the connections are tight (the DC jack and other USB board) by screwing them down. The only thing that happens that shows any life is when the battery is in. The power button, power indicator light in front, and the little "gears" light blink white for just a moment, then off, about every 5 seconds.

Any ideas? If I have to replace the motherboard, what is the difference between 0G8RW1 and 0VVN1W? I'm not worried about the product key not validating - may even put Windows 8 on it.

Both the Motherboards 0G8RW1 and 0VVN1W are compatible with this model and there is no difference. 07GC4R is also compatible with this model.

I picked up this Alienware 5700 off ebay to hopefully refurbish for my son but I'm new at this and still learning and so this thing has me baffled. The laptop is in pristine condition but shows no signs of life. When I plug in the power supply the green light on the power supply goes from solid green to blinking rapidly to the point you can barely see it. To me that would mean a short somewhere right ? If so where ? Has anyone else ever had experience with something like this ? I just don't want to go buying a new battery for a laptop that maybe fried already. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A:No power, no lights but green light on power supply blinks rapidly

Remove the laptops battery and try the AC power only. If the green light does the same, it still could only be a bad AC adapter, or at worst, a shorted laptop motherboard

I have a HP Mini 210 - 1030NR which won't turn on. There is no lights anywhere. Nothing happens when i press the power button.
I took out the hard drive and it works on my desktop. I took out the ram and tried to boot it up but nothing.

I am assuming it's probably a dead motherboard.

How can i test to see if the motherboard using a multi-meter?
I thought it was where you plug in the power adapter but I already tested some parts and i got 19V there, so i know it's not that.

I also tested where the battery is charged and it got .049v, so i know its working
But i tested the little white connector where the heatsink fan is going, but i didn't get any volts there, isnt there supposed to be some volts there?

I'm not sure whats wrong, anyone have any experience with power?

I have a Sony VGC-RB42G computer. I recently moved my computer, cleaned off all the dust, and when I plugged everything back in, it won't power up. The light on the power supply blinks green, inside the motherboard also has a green light that blinks as well. It has a ticking sound too, but I am not sure if it is coming from the power supply or the motherboard. Any idea what could be wrong.

FYI, I have already unplugged everything from the power supply, pulled out the ram, checked the battery, and put everything back together and still no change. One thing I thought was strange was after I unplugged everything, I pulled the power into the power supply again and this time the green light came on but did not blink. It stayed solid.

My computer was down when I came back from lunch and could not get it to come back on.  If I hold the power button down for about 7 seconds it blinks orange but there is not noise from the fan coming on or post beep.  Also the green light on the back is not on either. All of the other equipment sharing the same power strip come on but not the desktop so it is not the power strip.  I also tried to set it up in another office on a completely different circuit and still does the same thing. What should I try next?

A:OptiPlex 790 Wont power on power light blinks amber

Which form factor, desktop, mini-tower, small form, ultra-small form?
From the (desktop) manual: Blinking amber light indicates a problem with the system board.
Are any of the 4 diagnostic LEDs on when it won't boot? ,They're on the front of the PC next to the power button. Look up error codes in the manual.
Possible power supply failure if the green light is off on the back. Can you try a different power cord? What happens if you push the power supply diagnostic button on back of PC next to that (green) power light?

Hi everyone,

My pc just shut down this morning. I had a spare power pack- brand new and I fitted that.

Windows ran perfectly for 10 minutes then the same thing happened again!

I noticed on both occasions, that even after I had removed the extenal power lead, the green power 'on' light kept on flashing on/off.

I have never noticed that before when a power pack 'blew'.

Does anyone think I was unlucky with a 'duff' replacement power pack?

Is the flashing power light indicative of some oother fault?

Any and all help welcome. PLEASE!

Many thanks.

As you did not mention any message or display on the screen, I would use this tutorial for a step by step diagnostic.  It also helps to remove the side panel, and visually watch the CPU and rear case fan movement(s).  As you press the power button, pay attention to the fans. Also does the Power Supply LED stay ON? Or did it go OUT when you pressed the power button?

I have an Optiplex 390 (actually 3 with similar behavior...).
PC would not power on. I did the power test and determine the Mobo was the issue.
I replaced the Mobo with a new one. Still can't power from front power button, but if I go at the back to the power supply 'power test button' and press on it the full PC comes on with all fans everything, but front power button is amber. And I get nothing on display, fans stay full speed. I can turn off, by pressing the from power button for a few seconds.
I tried using the CPU from another of the 3 PCs that had similar power issues and pointed to Mobo.
I reconnected all cables, tried different RAM modules, different video card, nothing makes a difference.
Not sure where to look now.

Went to turn on my Lenovo Ideapad Y410p laptop and nothing happened! No led lights with power source on and battery in. When I used it two days ago, I ran AVG and spy-bot and everything was fine. Used it a little bit and turned it off. Now nothing??? Did the power/battery disconnect with holding power button for 30 seconds... nothing. Both batteries 9 cell and 6 cell had full charge, tried my other Lenovo charger... no go. A surge couldn't have happened as the laptop is plugged into same strip as my other lenovo laptop is and that one is working fine.

Hi jack61 ,
We now know, power drain failed. No LED error codes , No beep codes
No activity lights even with battery charging led.
Not turning on even with known good charged batteries.
No power even with known good ac adapter.
What we can try:
Try plugging it directly on the wall and press novo key (number 1 page 7) to turn it on instead.
Check if the power port shows any signs of burnt / damage / looseness .
Press Novo key using a charged battery.
Remove battery, harddrive , memory and other accessories and plug directly with a known working adapter and or with a charged battery ( it should at least beep).
If all fails , you can have it checked for the motherboard issue with a technician (checking on the internals /cleaning or reseating parts connected to the board / applying thermal paste (for processor isolation) / checking on dc in board and port).
You can check for your warranty here and call in tech support for service.

I first logged out of my computer and came back and I noticed an orange light on the power button. I shut it of and turn it back on about two times with the same results of an orange light. I then shut of the the extension that houses 10 plugs. When I turned on the extension I turned on the computer the power button didn't give off a blue light or orange light. The VGA cable, mouse, keyboard, Ethernet cable are all plugged in. I later removed all the connects to the computer gave it a minute and plugged it all back in. There is a solid green light on the back under the power cable. The fans turn on there is noise coming from inside the computer a soft humming and light fan from the back of the computer. But the power button will not turn on. The monitor light is orange and says "No Input signal Input 2,Go to Power Save." When I switch to input 1 it reads "Cable Disconnected Go to Power Save." What internal issue could this be?

The tips I got with this Kensington 33197 power adapter have numbers stenciled on them like N3, N5, N19, etc. The tips sold on their web site make no mention of the "N" numbers and have numbers like K20059, K20050, etc. and there is no cross reference.

You can also see a complete reference for "N" numbers to all the laptops they support at the above link. Again, no mention of the numbers Kensington uses on their site.

I need a cross reference for these kinds of numbers.

Kensington referred me to their telephone tech support; but, there is a language or cultural barrier that prevents their understanding what I need.

Your notebook has hardware failure and it is sending the hexadecimal code. This code can be read by technicians and they will know what the problem is.

Hi there,

We've got 3 Dell precision towers 5810 that work great, except for a possible bios bug, which I can reproduce on all machines:

I'm using the installed NIC: Intel ethernet server adapter i210-t1.
Our computers go powerless every night (mains power) after a normal pc shutdown. Every morning, when the power is back on, I want to wake up all computers in our building with Wake On Lan (WOL) by sending a 'magic packet' over the network.
This normally works well if the machine has been switched on and off with the power button / windows shutdown. But when I unplug the machine (mains power), wait and plug in the mains power again, the computer does not respond to the WOL packet. (Maybe the PCI-E NIC does not get power on plugging in the mains of machine for the first time).
It works well on the integrated (motherboard) NIC. BIOS / power / sleep state settings seem to be ok.

Hopefully someone here can help solve my issue, because I'm practically at my wit's end with it. I recently ran Lenovo's Updater program and it installed a few new things on my Laptop... I don't remember all of them, but I know one was a BIOS update, a Firmware update (can't remember specifically for what though), as well as a few programs I was missing on my computer (like Lenovo Power Management, just to name one).  It's something I hadn't ran for a good year, so I'm sure everything was using an older version! In any case, it seems after I did that, many of the games on my computer started playing worse.  Long story short, after checking out a few programs to monitor what my computer's doing (CPU-Z, and even Intel's Extreme Tuning Utility), I noticed that my Laptop's suddenly only using a portion of what it can do. For example, the core speed should be able to go up to 2.6ghz - 3.3ghz... but strangely, it's staying at a solid 1.20ghz the whole time. No matter if I run any graphic-intensive games or do anything else that might need some extra power, it stays exactly at that number. Here's the weird thing though.  If I unplug my Laptop and let it run off the battery?  It shoots straight up to the 2.6ghz-3.3ghz, as it's supposed to.  As soon as I plug it in again, it drops right back down to 1.20ghz and many of my games run like crap again. I've tried looking up solutions online, but I've found nothing that helps. I've tri... Read more

Older Dell Optiplex GX260 tower model. Okay first I extra a harddrive from an HP older system that had just recently crashed. Now I want to read that drive right? I put it in as a 2nd drive in my Dell Optiplex system, set the jumper to cable selected, go into BIOS and select my 1st drive to show it as AUTO. I hit Save changes, upon rebooting it, it gets to the end of logo display and freezes. Weird, never saw that before, I think crap maybe the IDE cable is set wrong or something. I remove the cable and molex plugs from both HDD's after the power is off and set it back to the way it was.

When I reboot I get to the end of the logo again and it freezes and I can't even get into BIOS. Very strange. Well I go back again to check my work and see it is fine with how the IDE cable is sitting and the Molex plug. Now the system won't even power on. The light to the MOBO is on but the system won't start. I undo the front panel and work to see if the cable is worn but it is not and it appears to be fine. The light to the signal will not work to go green at all.

What do you think could be most common issue of this and why? I don't have a multimeter to test the system with and I don't know if it's more than a passing problem. I have never encountered anything like this were a system worked fine then you attempted to just read a 2nd HDD and it started to cascade a bunch of problems to the system.

Any help or ideas are much appreciated, thanks.

My Yoga S1 has contradictory, intermittent power issues that I'm trying to chase down. Culprits are bad power bric/cord/plug or power socket on mother board or power board that feeds into power button/led on. One day it blacked out and wouldn't restart to hard drive or windows stage. I did get an error code which I can't remember 5100 or 5500 poss?, that seemed to indicate the power board or ribbons to that needed replacement or re-attachment. So fiddled with it and it did fire up in windows all ok. Then ran out of power and died again. power button wouldn't light up. plugging in power unit did light up led as getting charge. Left it overnight and then it miraculously charged up. pushed power button light up twice then nothing. took out power board/detached ribbon, then it fired up to windows, fixed some hd errors and has been restarting without problems. Except now there is no plug showing on battery icon when plugged in. So not recharging but I'm sure the battery is good. And logically, the power brick and plug must be feeding electricity into laptop to get it to recharge enough to start up. So power socket and plug may be suspect with intermittent contact problems. Or the power board somehow is involved in this? I've ordered a new powerboard as easy screw in and cheap. My question about powerboard is does this control ability of plug to charge battery? power brick with new plug is next order from ebay. but the power socket, which see... Hey all,
I have a PC Dell Dimension 5100 that im working on for a friend when she brought it to me it was just moving insanely slow. I saw she had a ton of extra apps that were unnecessary. So I cleaned up the machine and didn't even recall that her initial problem was that she was complaining that hte machine wouldn't come on.

I was able to turn the machine on no problem so I didn't know what happened. After I went to the store got some RAM and returned to install it. The machine isn't coming on..

I think the power supply is broken I checked the fan in the power supply and it doesn't spin. But the motherboard has a green light on it. I am willing to get her a new power supply but I don't know if the green light on the motherboard is saying that the power is not the issue?

I really want to get this 'headache' machine out of my house asap but I want it to be fixed right. Can someone recommend the steps they'de take to finish this off.

Prior to this power issue this is what was done:

1. Ran a chkdsk /r because the window's was corrupt.
2. Installed a secondary hard drive with the OS installed on there.
3. Ran all updates
At this point I just needed to put RAM in it because it has 504MB. Everything was fine until I shut it off went to the store came back and boom. Now it won't cut on.
Any help would be appreciated.

Sounds like you need a new psu and they are easy to install. 4 screws and carefully seat all the plugs in now, but the key is buy a good quality replacement of at least 450-500 watts like an Antec, Enermax, Thermaltake, Corsair etc... and you will do fine.

For the last two weeks, every time I start my Dell INSPIRON E1705 while using the power supply I am greeted with the following message. "The AC power adapter type cannot be determined. Your system will operate slower and the battery will not charge. Please connect a Dell 90W AC adapter or higher for best system operation". I press the F1 Key and everything works fine. I've read about this on other websites and most say it's a design flaw in the power supply after the cord has been properly wound around the supply as designed. Apparently a few of the cords internal wire strands become broken and cause this message. My computer is from June 2006 and shouldn't be having this issue so early...or ever. This seems like a flaw that should have created some type of manufacturers recall since so many people are having this issue. I'm of course out of warranty, will Dell replace this free of charge?

A:Power Supply - "The AC power adapter type cannot be determined....."

You are correct, the failure is due toloss of the power supply ID signal. Sometimes this happens because of strain on the plug, which breaks the signal wire. Some even are so severe that the insulation breaks away from the plug; this is due to rough handling. The other cause is one or more of the power socket solder connections to the system board become broken. This also is related to severe handling. I have seen one case where all three power connections and three of four mechanical connections were disconnected. If the power supply is bad, a replacement will cure the problem. If not, then the socket is bad, and this will require a system board replacement. If you are experienced, you can try to resolder the connections. I am experienced and was not able to get my daughter's E6000 to work by resoldered. More recent Dells are using a replacable power connection board which is a much cheaper repair.

I am using Inspiron 15R 5110 Laptop. My few days my laptop was not receiving power. Charger is working fine but battery was not getting charged. I tried connecting the charger to the laptop and removed the battery to check whether power is getting supplied then i came to know that power was not getting supplied to laptop. Do I need to change the charger socket in the laptop?
Please help me to fix the issue.

Hi, I'm having some problems with my laptop. The power light is on, but the screen is blank. Does anyone know what this could be? It's a Compaq Presario 1200. There's no sound, fans not running, nothing?

Sorry if this has been asked before but can anyone answer this. I have a brand new power supply and when turned on the power light is on the fans run for maybe 1/4 of a sec and thats it. Ive checked to make sure the mobo isnt touching the case.
Does it matter if the power supply is an AT or an ATX? Are they interchangeable?

Good day to you all (in stewie's voice)...

The Machine: Dell Dimension 8200 (original) w/ Power Light and HD light

Here is the bg story... June 29th Terrible storm, knocked my PC out, left it with the RED light (scared the shhh out of me), killed my dsl router too. In 5mins cpu up and running (dsl dead 4weeks). DSL fixed + new dsl router... my Ethernet card shot, HARD POWERED-OFF my cpu to replace it, the "turn off" function has not been working for a while, unless i Task MGR and manually turn off like 8 programs. I turn the cpu off, open the cpu, noticed my green light was.. orange like (on the mother board).

Put the new NIC card in quickly, closed up, power on... Keyboard flash once then led lights die, Monitor acting like its on sleep mode, NO BEEPS, LOUD FANS (6yr old comp, lol), cd n dvd drives blinks like normal (i can open and close em), HD light comes on... NO LIGHT ON POWER LIGHT and HD LIGHT TURNS OFF after a few seconds.

Switched all external cables to make sure everything is cool, and they are, but cpu still not booting. Open the cpu up, to tidy up a bit (dusty), GREEN light on the inside (no longer orange).

I read somewhere (answerbag-com/q_view/47132) that the reset button could be damage/stuck, I kinda agree, but dont know for sure, because I do know what MY comp sounds like when I need to RESTART my comp MANUALLY, and it sounds like its just restarting over and over continuously, then the HD light just says F'it and die... PLZ Help.

A:Power On... Power Light Off?

It's about 90% reasonable to say your Power Supply is gone (even though it tries to start)
The other 10% could be HardDrive (or CD/DVD Drive) You could unplug the data cables on this (motherboard end) to fully confirm

But I believe you need a new PowerSupply

BenchTesting would be the way to go

I have a recent DELL laptop:
Inspiron 7000 (Inspiron 17 7778 2-in-1),
Core i7, 16 Gb RAM, 128 GB SSD + 1TB HD...
Not a lot of programs and lots of space available.
In the last few months I have had a lot of poor performance issues. I finally figured out it is related to Windows 10 Power Plan. When set to "Power Saver", the performance is awful. The CPU is maxed to 0.80 GHz. So when browsing the net or looking at my picture gallery, the computer hangs, and it becomes impossible to use. If I change the plan to high performance, the computer behaves normally - fast!
And even if I change the plan to another plan (i.e. High Perf), the next time I restart or wake-up the computer, the "Power Saver" power plan is set back... Very frustrating. And as shows the image, it is not the "bolded" option in the list. What can be changing constantly that parameter??
I contacted DELL chat support and they asked me to re-install Windows! There is probably a better way to fix this. It looks to me as a DELL Driver conflicting with Windows. Also, my mother has an older DELL laptop on Windows 10 and she experiences the same issue...
Any help would be very appreciated!
