Hi, This laptop has a genuine Windows 10 OS preintsalled. I have installed a Linux OS in external Hard Disk and booting from this laptop. Does it affect my first year free warranty ?
I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.
I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.
You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)
Hi, Yes and No. If your machine failed by Linux then this will void warranty. I always say warranty is a very GREY area. Regards.Read other 2 answers
This is Manish Kumar. I bought Dell laptop from Olympia, WA last year. Now I am in India and I am facing some issues which I think are related to the hardware. Is there any way that I can transfer laptop warranty to India so that I can get it repaired at the Dell service center here in India?
Thanks in advance,
If you purchased the system with an onsite warranty (extra cost), yes - it can be transferred. If you did not, you must upgrade to an onsite warranty at extra cost before it can be transferred.
I have purchased
Dell Inspiron 15 Laptop Computer - 15.6" Screen / 6th Gen Intel Core i7 Processor / 1TB Hard Drive / 12GB Memory/ Windows 10

I'm setting up home media server. At least trying to...
My home network looks like this:
2 laptops (ubuntu/windows7) and a home server (ubuntuServer + Samba).
I've samba setup in a way to provide password-less access to share folders. I secured it by blocking all IPs but the range I use at home. (I can provide config details upon request).
With ubuntu laptop, I can connect to server without any issue. I just go to network tabs and can see windows WORKGROUP share smb share both pointing to same folder. So all works good. I can also mount external drive without issue, or create network drive. Connection never times out and it stays all good.
Now windows7 turned out to be a problem.
Problem#1 Using "map network drive" tool I cannot use hostname (server.local) I've to use IP. This means that every time server box is asigned a new IP by my dumb router I have to delete the drive and run wizard again. This is very annoying. Since IP doesn'ts tay static I cannot use WINS or map IP in hosts file. So I'm open to suggestions from your side.
Problem#2 Win7 disconnects network drive every 15 minutes (I think), on SAMBA I configured to stay live all the time. But windows has its own mind so it doesn't keep connection live. This results in, lateness when I try to go to my computer as OS tries to find and add drive on network. Every 2 times in 5 this procedure gives me error, host cannot be reached or something like this. So I've to delete folder and remap drive again, w... Read more

Guys I am from India I want to buy a laptop
I want a laptop that should have 4 or 3 GB ram and 500 gb hard disk, 1 gb graphic card and i5 processor. I wanted to buy it from dell but I don't know which brand is the best because i use desktop.
And the price should be between 35ks to 45ks.
I need your help guys just tell me which one is the best.
And most importantly i forgot to mention i need at least 3 to 4 hours of battery backup
A lot of machines have that specification - Toshiba, Dell, HP, Sony, Acer
I dont know the brands available in India - however, I have moved to hardware forum, & changed the title - you may get more response
I want to buy a Dell laptop. When I compare the prices between India and the US, I found that it is more affordable to ship it from the US.
Is it possible to ship the laptop from the US, if so what will be the Shipping charges? Will it be delivered safely?
Any valueable inputs deeply appreciated.
Unless you know someone in the US who can order for you and ship, no - Dell won't ship internationally.
Even then, remember that the warranty applies to the country of purchase - you'll have to transfer ownership and warranty when you receive the system.
I had a Dell laptop Inspiron 15 3000 Series (Inrel(R)) - 3543, I purchased it from US. I have sent that laptop to my house in India and it got stolen from there. I launch a Police complaint there with the serial number I got from Dell support team. but now, Police is asking me some mac id (I do not know what it means), so my question is where can I get this id ?
Thanks in advance for your reply.
I think that they are referring to the mac address ID of the onboard network card. But we do not have those. All we provide is the service tag number and express service code number. Which are found on the laptop itself and your Dell invoice.Read other 1 answers

Hi Emyy161 ,
Welcome to the Community Forums.
You may review this article "Checking for International Warranty Service (IWS)" on how to proceed.
Take time to review coverage and limitation :
" Lenovo makes no commitment that the same method of service purchased in the original country will be provided in the destination country. Service procedures vary by country, and some service and/or parts may not be available in all countries. Lenovo will use commercially reasonable efforts subject to support capabilities within the destination country to obtain parts. Some countries may have fees and restrictions that apply at the time of service such as packaging, shipping and handling fees "
On my end, I tried using the model as some may not be marketed on some regions using the international warranty look up page. Listed location would include UK and you can call in Lenovo UK 0333-777-3991 for details .
Hope this help answer your query.
Update us how things go.

Is the problem that the hard drive doesn't show up in CMOS or that it does but Linux won't boot.
Or are you expecting to see a Linux hard drive from within XP. Pretty sure that is not going to work out very well.

You could start by just using a Live Linux CD. You also have the option of running Linux Inside Virtualization software like Virtual Box or Virtual PC.
You could also install Linux inside of Vista.
I would use Wubi or some Virtualization software first. It would be the least destructive to your computer without having to do a full install with a dual boot.
I have a web script to test out. After much searching I tried to find a free web host just to test the script before further development. It requires cron, which a windows server does not support, from my understanding.
I looked into setting my PC as a linux server instead, so I downloaded VMware to set up Ubuntu and try a server from that to test script and share the development folder between windows and linux.
Is it possible though to run a server in VMware (or other virtual pc) to be able to connect in windows, need to test in both IE and firefox eventually.
I did try set-up ubuntu on VMware, though GNOME fails to start and the cursor becomes unresponsive to both the VMware and in windows, requiring a restart of the system.
Does ubuntu have server software to run cron? I was told that's all that's needed.
I don't want to dual boot, not on my current PC anyway, but is there anything I can do to work with linux within, or with windows?
I did get linux to work in MS virtual PC, so may try that again, was very slow though, suppose the extra RAM will make the difference however.
I could pay for hosting for cron to save time, but I just want to try it out, develop a little maybe, see if I find it interesting to work with, so paid hosting just does not seem worth it.
Ubuntu does indeed have a server software. Go to http://www.ubuntu.com/products/WhatIsUbuntu/serveredition
It looks like it runs Cron, too.

I bought this laptop on ebay new for my mother and had kept it in my closet for a few months. I gave it to her as a gift and a few months later i was watching her use it and noticed she was repeatedly shutting down the laptop and turning it back on, i asked why? She said the internet wouldnt work unless she did that multiple times. So i had a look at it and made sure all of the drivers were installed (they were) and counldnt find out why it was doing it other than a hardware issue (possibly) So i asked her where the warranty was tried to see if i could get hp to take it back, but the warranty said it has expired. She didnt use this thing for a year, i kept it in my closet for months..is there some way hp takes in certain cases and looks past the warranty date? I cant really afford to buy her another nor can she and she is stuck with this thing. The laptop is still in very good condition we just need the internet to work on it. Is there anything that can be done?

I want to install Windows XP Home Edition SP3 to an NTFS partition on my SSD.
The PC has the following devices hooked up:
128 GB SSD - ext4 and swap partitions taking up half the space, Linux Mint 17.2 installed
A blank NTFS partition taking up the rest
750 GB HDD - one NTFS partition
1 TB HDD - one ext4 partition
But when I run the XP setup disc, it reports the following:
122104 MB Disc 0 at Id 0 on bus 0 on ahcix86 [MBR]
E: Partition1 [Unknown] 122104 MB ( 122104 MB free)
715403 MB Disk 0 at Id 2 on bus 0 on ahcix86 [MBR]

953868 MB Disk 0 at Id 3 on bus 0 on ahcix86 [MBR]
F: Partition1 [Unknown] 953869 MB ( 953868 MB free)
And if I select E: it tells me "Windows XP cannot recognize the partition you selected."
You never know what's going on there. Maybe it does not like UEFI or ext4?

I want to install Windows XP Home Edition SP3 to an NTFS partition on my SSD.
Cool. Please keep in mind that Windows XP will overwrite GRUB. As such, you will lose access to Linux Mint, and will need to re-install GRUB using a Linux Mint live-flashdrive (or live-DVD).
Maybe it does not like UEFI or ext4?
In Linux Mint type:
sudo parted -l
This will show information about your harddrive, most importantly what kind of partition table you're using. Based on your comment about UEFI, I would presume you're using a GPT table, which Windows XP doesn't support. Nore does Windows XP support UEFI.
So I do not know much about servers but I heard that almost 50% of servers are running Linux these days cause they are more secure and cost effective. Is all this true, can someone please educate me. thanks.
there is many kinds of servers, web, storage, database etc.
it all depends on what services you want to provide.
and as for security there is no such thing as 100% secure and for cost is not only OS licence and hardware, but support maintenence etc.
I am thinking about replacing Windows with a copy of Linux seeing as that I cannot stand Microsoft and their customer support. I am also curious about the performance of the games running in these conditions. For you to better explain that, my pertinent specs are as follows:
3 ghz P4
2gb DDR ram
geforce 6800gt 256 ram
sound blaster audigy 2 zs
Thanks in advance for the information.
Take a look at these:
DirectX 9 and Half-Life 2

I played HL2 and many other D3D games with the help of Cedega when I used Linux.
Will my laptop warranty gets void if i downgrade pre-installed Windows 10 to Windows 7? Because prefer the windows 7 than windows 10 and i bought the laptop 5-months ago.
Hi, You will not lose your warranty but (since you did not tell us this info) depending on the model you probably will not have any driver support for windows 7, so any issues which you will have due to lack of drivers will not be solved by acer. You will need to find drivers for all the components in the system by yourself. And I am expecting to be the case in your situation, since you bought it quite recently, and recent models of notebooks come with windows 10 support.Read other 1 answers

My laptop is new in warranty period so does HP provides water damage protection in warranty period? Can you replace it with new one or can you repair it. I have heared that HP provides water damage protection like others do. Thanks.
From the HP Accidental Damage Protection page:"You can purchase this plan during the HP standard warranty period. Buy your plan at the same time you purchase your HP product to get the most coverage and value. Because accidents are unavoidable, and the costs associated with them can really add up." It looks like it can be purchased during the standard warranty and would cover incidents of damage while the coverage is in place, or damage that happens after you purchase the extra coverage. This might be good information for your next purchase. Thanks,Read other 6 answers

Hi everyone, Almost a year ago I bought a HP Spectre 360 in the US. Up till now I have been very happy with it, but for pure peace of mind I am trying to extend the warranty in the UK (as I am living here now). HP is telling me that it is not possible. Has someone been in the same situation (i.e. buying in X country and extending warranty in Y country?). Is it possible, if so how did you manage to do it? As a side note, their Support Service Agreement does not state that the computer must have been bought in the country of the warranty extension. Many thanks!
Hi, Thats a difficult situation to begin with. First of. If you are going to call HP Support 1800-474-6836 and you are going to extend your computer's warranty. They will definitely ask you for a credit card number and billing address. Ofcourse if your not within US thats gotta be a problem because they use a tool to process payment which accepts US addresses only. The best thing that you could do if you really insist of getting a warranty is talk to your friends that lives within US and ask them if thy could process the warranty for you and pay them afterwards. Regards.
