Q: Micro$oft to patch Google engineer's zero-day next week

http://www.infoworld.com/d/security-centra...ecurity_centralJuly 09, 2010By Gregg Keizer | ComputerworldMicrosoft said it will deliver four security updates next week to patch five vulnerabilities in Windows and Office, including the bug that a Google researcher took public a month ago.As expected, the slate for next Tuesday is relatively short: Microsoft has been shipping alternating large and small batches of fixes, with the larger updates landing in even-numbered months. In June, for example, the company issued 10 bulletins that patched a record-tying 34 vulnerabilities. May's collection, meanwhile, amounted to just two bulletins that fixed two flaws."This month is light, and would have been even lighter if Tavis hadn't forced them to move faster than their norm [to patch his vulnerability]," said Wolfgang Kandek, the chief technology officer of Qualys.snipWhile some security researchers criticized Ormandy for taking the bug public, others rose to his defense, blasting both Microsoft and the press -- including Computerworld -- for linking Ormandy to his employer, Google.Last week, a group of anonymous researchers who called themselves the Microsoft-Spurned Researcher Collective (MSRC) -- a play on the acronym used by the Microsoft team bug-investigation team -- retaliated by releasing information about an unpatched vulnerability in Windows Vista and Server 2008. The group published its bug report because of what it said was Microsoft's "hostility toward security researchers," and cited the Ormandy incident as the most recent example."This shows that Microsoft can move very quickly when it's necessary," said Kandek of Microsoft's patching speed.More at link

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I like the idea that a group of security people are posting security threats in windows and getting M/S off there dead bass and verify the concerns and get the fixes out sooner.

Hello,

After last weeks updates my UAC keeps resetting after a few hours, i set it to Never Notify and after a while it goes back to normal.

Notes:

I'm running W8 Enterprise.
It was running normally before the update.
No 3rd party programs were installed, the OS remained unchanged, just the updates.

Is the problem known? Is there a solution?
Sorry if it was already posted in another thread.

Mozilla has pulled Firefox 37's opportunistic encryption feature after less than a week when it learned that tech designed to enhance security actually broke SSL certificate validation.
A simple patch wouldn't do the trick, so Mozilla opted to release an update, Firefox 37.0.1, that removed opportunistic encryption.
Going into reverse ferret mode and stripping out technology that evidently wasn't ready for prime time is a little embarrassing for Mozilla even though this is the responsible action to take in the circumstances.
Mozilla correctly labels Firefox 37.0.1 as a critical update.
Opportunistic encryption offers some basic encryption of data previously sent as clear text. The vulnerability arises in security flaws within the Alternative Services capability that underpins opportunistic encryption.
The CVE-2015-0799 bug in Mozilla's HTTP Alternative Services implementation – discovered by security researcher Muneaki Nishimura – left surfers vulnerable to man-in-the-middle attacks that involved hackers impersonating genuine sites.

In the past the first results page listed about 12 results-with a column of several ads along the right side of page (very unobjectionable.)
Recently-about this past week I get a full page of ONLY ads plus a pop-up that seldom has any logic to the question I asked. After deleting the pop-up and clicking NEXT PAGE I get the first page of actual results. This is so distracting I am probably going to find another guide to pages. I am interested in whether this is a Google change (but I have seen no discussion about it) or some change made to my system.

Have not noticed any change to Google's results - it is business as usual here. Perhaps your computer has been invaded by adware and spyware. Follow the instructions in this thread to check for and clean the malware.

I was reading financial articles online yesterday, when suddenly the entire computer shutdown unexpectedly. Upon start-up, the screen showed a warning that recommended a system restore, so I went ahead and did it.

Once I re-started, I noticed that I couldn't access anything through the search engine, Google. Anytime I try to go to any page through Google, I get the "Search not found" error. Once I realized that every other site worked fine, I did some research and discovered that it sounded like the effects behind a popular "Google virus."

However, I tried searching for "TDSSserve.sys" which is normally associated with this problem, and found absolutely nothing.

To make matters worse - My Trend Micro has started spazzing out like crazy. In less than 24 hours, I've received over 100,000 "web threats" from some hxxp://x-web.in /(followed by several random alpha, numbers)...I had to turn off my router to stop these threats from racking up.

Thank goodness Trend Micro blocked every single attempt so far!! As long as my router is on, Trend Micro blocks about 200-300 "x-web" web threats per minute!

Any idea what's attacking my computer? I can't access Google and this x-web.in thing keeps attempting to penetrate at relentless, rapid speed.

Help is much appreciated, as I am at a total loss on what to do at this point.

Note: I'm running Windows 7 on an HP G-62 model. I do not own a copy of the operating system.

Hy
my name is Daniel and I will be assisting you with your Malware related problems.

Before we move on, please read the following points carefully. First, read my instructions completely. If there is anything that you do not understand kindly ask before proceeding.
Perform everything in the correct order. Sometimes one step requires the previous one.
If you have any problems while you are follow my instructions, Stop there and tell me the exact nature of your problem.
Do not run any other scans without instruction or Add/ Remove Software unless I tell you to do so. This would change the output of our tools and could be confusing for me.
Post all Logfiles as a reply rather than as an attachment unless I specifically ask you. If you can not post all logfiles in one reply, feel free to use more posts.
If I don't hear from you within 3 days from this initial or any subsequent post, then this thread will be closed.
Stay with me. I will give you some advice about prevention after the cleanup process. Absence of symptoms does not always mean the computer is clean.
My first language is not english. So please do not use slang or idioms. It could be hard for me to read. Thanks for your understanding.

Hello  I have a Lenovo Yoga 300.  I connect selected folders from my Google Drive account so that all of my operational activity (file updates, desktop folder, download folder etc) is permanently in the cloud rather than on local storage.  I have a Gmail account on which I recently activated offline emails.  I notice my storage space is rapidly depleting as I require around 40GB of Google Drive files available to me.  This is becoming an issue as there is insufficient space to perform regular Windows 10 updates.  Also overal performance is slowing down - I assume local mail for Gmail requires a significant amount of space too.  I am considering upgrading, but before I do, I want to explore using the MicroSD card slot.  My assumption is that I could get a card of say 128GB and up, and transfer all of my Google Drive requirements to the card, thus freeing up a considerable amount of space on the SSD itself.  Is this assumption correct?  Will Google Drive work off an SD card?  Are there conflicts or performance issues I need to worry about? If I proceed is there a recommended Lenovo compatible product which will offer me similar speeds as having files resident on the SSD?  What is the maximum sized Micro SD card that will be compatible with my device? Thank you!Chris

Dear Experts,

I have few queries :
> i have been pacthing IE on win 2012 R2 servers from Oct 2017 and the latest deployed pacth is April 2018 roll out. but when i scan these server by Vulnerability scanners- it detects  june 2017 IE patch missing(which i know was never deplyed as
i started patching from Oct 2017 ) and i believe this June 2017 IE patch requires below registry key to be present , which they are not :
The following registry key is missing.
This registry key is required to enable the fix for CVE-2017-8529:
SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\FeatureControl\FEATURE_ENABLE_PRINT_INFO_DISCLOSURE_FIX\iexplore.exe
SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\FeatureControl\FEATURE_ENABLE_PRINT_INFO_DISCLOSURE_FIX\iexplore.exe
My Query is -
Does the installation of the superseding patch adds/updates the registry keys required for the patch it supersedes. In this case should  the successfull installation of April 2018 IE patch be adding these registry keys required for June 2017 IE patch.
if not  is there any documentation related to this ?

I have never experienced this symptom before: exactly one week ago, after reinstalling everything, as if timed, my computer crashed again after one week of use.

Here is my system makeup Quad Q6600 @ 2.4GHz, P5N-E SLI, with two SLI-ed nVIDIA 8600GT, 4GB RAM Corsair CM2x1064-6400C4 (4-4-4-12), 500GB SATA WD Caviar under WinXP 32bit.

After a about one week (of stability) the system started crashing and become unstable to the point where it would reset (blue screen) every 5min.

Updated the BIOS & reinstalled everything under WinXP 64bit in a second partition (basically left WinXP32bit in one partition with dual boot) and exactly one week thereafter the same symptoms are now happening.

Could it be my RAM as a week ago when I started to get blue screens at one point after resetting itself a couple of times the PC started issuing 20 sec long beeps without restarting. I removed the RAM and had it reseated. Also under the latest BIOS I had it set to 4-4-4-12 for RAM and slowed it down from 800Mhz to 677Mhz.

I now have the feeling that my HDD is at the source of the problem with a bad sector.

Anyone had this kind of symptom http://images.techguy.org/icon/icon6.gif
Cool?

Any feedback is extremely appreciated!
Cheers!
Chris.

I don't know if these problems are related.

1. I am getting pop-ups from Trend Micro more and more frequently (right now it is about RealUpgrade Launcher)--the box will say it is "suspicious" and give the option to block or allow. No matter how often I click "allow" or "block" it immediately pops up again, even if I check the "stop warning me about this program" box. I have been getting these pop ups from Adobe several times a day.

2. On the top right corner of my Internet Explorer home page is a Google search box. No matter what I type in, the results are always the same: a page that says "Blocked by Trend Micro" and then in red an address that begins http://findgala.com
For example, when I tried to Google "RealUpgrade," I got that "blocked by Trend Micro" message and the address: http://findgala.com/?&uid2204=&q=realupgrade (and a message "Credibility: dangerous"
The only way I can do a Google search is type www.google.com and search from there.

3. As of today, whenever I try to open a link in an e-mail (including the one I got from bleepingcomputer when I tried to register), I get a message from Microsoft Office Outlook in a box with an X in a red circle that says "The operation has been canceled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Unauthorized Patch For Microsoft WMF Bug Sparks Controversy

Sober worm may hit tomorrow, but businesses are more concerned about the WFM vulnerability and Microsoft's inability to produce a patch this week. Some are choosing an alternative that could lead to other problems.

By Larry Greenemeier
InformationWeek

Jan 4, 2006 01:00 PM

Concerns over the lack of a Microsoft-issued patch have pushed the Windows Metafile/Zero-Day bug to top of mind, surpassing even tomorrow's much-anticipated Sober worm attack.

The lag time between the Dec. 27 discovery of the WMF vulnerability and Microsoft's planned Jan. 10 patch availability has forced IT security departments to find alternative means for protecting their systems and prompted a non-Microsoft developer to create a patch that others could use.

All of this serves to damage Microsoft's reputation as a company that can secure its own products—a reputation that only recently was beginning to improve after years of being dragged through the mud. Experts are divided over whether it's wise to use Ilfak Guilfanov's Hexblog patch to fix the WMF vulnerability, which could allow attackers to use WMF images to execute malicious code on their victims' computers. Some say it's a necessary measure to protect systems until the official Microsoft patch arrives; others say it's not worth the extra work to patch twice or to take the risk of using a third-party fix.

I have encountered those delightful folks who get call you out of the blue, try to make you think that they are from MicroSoft, and tell you that there are horrible things wrong with your computer (it's been sending out signals, you see) that only a Microsoft Engineer can fix, and they will make it all better and cover you for a year for around $200. Right, sure, and I'm a Surgeon General of the United States Engineer and I will keep your nose out of your ass for a year for $200.

But--I have been using Avast as my antivirus for some time now, and it seems to be effective and user friendly. But now I had occasion to call them, and they ran some diagnostics and told me essentially the same thing as the above-mentioned scam agents. Deep down in my computer, it seems--so deep that it would make no difference if I replaced the hard drive and installed the OS (Windows 7 currently) from a new disk, I think they said even if I replaced the motherboard), there are baddies that only a Microsoft &c &c. And of course they offered to do it for around the same price.

Now I ask myself: Is there really anything that Microsoft Engineer from Avast can do that, say, Bleeping Computer cannot? Is there really a subbasement in the bleeping computer that only God or the mighty MS Engineer can get to? I'm skeptical, and I would much rather have you guys run Hijack This and ComboFix and do whatever is needed, because I know from experience how good you are. What he found was a l... Read more

I've never had occasion to contact Avast! support, so I don't know what they do or do not do.  I will say that there is nothing a Microsoft Engineer can do that taking the steps that you stated would not accomplish.  If the problem can't even be resolved by replacing the motherboard then it just isn't getting fixed.  Guess you'll just have to switch to Knoppix

I am almost done with my associates degree in Computer Networking. So I am not a total noob at this, but my friend's computer has me stumped. Here's the scenario.

They have a wireless network. The router and modem is upstairs, with a mac connected to it. Downstairs are two pcs, both wireless. Things have been working for about 7 months just fine. Then, the other day both the wireless computers couldn't get on the internet. Running an ipconfig shows both computers still on the network. Both computers were able to ping each other and the router. I released the ip addresses and renewed them, DHCP server works fine, issued them the ip address. Both were once again connected to the network, able to ping the router. Still can't get on the internet though. I checked the access lists, which I set up for them 7 months ago so just their computers can get on. Nothing has changed, their mac addresses are still the only ones that can get on.

So I got rid of the access list anyway. Same thing, computers are on the network but can't access the internet. Shut encryption off on everything, nothing changes. Reset router to factory settings. Nothing changed.

So, has anyone encountered this before. I am completely stumped. The computers are on the network, they can ping each other, ping the router, but the wireless pc's cannot access the internet, only the directly connected computer can. Signal Strength is excellent. Sharing files printers, everything is grea... Read more

I'm thinking of possibly minoring in computer engineering in college because of its supposedly high demand in the job market.
What do I need to know to become one? What type of "code" of whatever is needed? Is it like C++ or HTML or Java? I'm a newbie, so if you can just explain what I need to know and why would be nice!

A:What do I need to learn to become a computer engineer?

If you check the college prospectus, it will tell you the minimum requirements to study the course. You will generally need a basic understanding of how a computer works as well as how to compile code, with a basic knowledge of coding if possible, as you will be taught more on the course.

However, when you press the ‘Sky’ button on the Sky remote now the TV doesn’t switch to SCART anymore. How can I get this working again? Everything’s working fine, apart from the fact the TV won’t switch to SCART when you turn the decoder on. You now have to use the TV remote to enable Sky. Any help would be much appreciated.

A:When engineer re installs visitor?

Confirm with the Dell engineer if your Vista recovery disc is just for the Windows OS only or if it also has all of the needed drivers and programs that came bundled on the computer. If it was Windows only and it was my computer, I would would be insisting that Dell supply me for free with any other recovery discs needed to restore the computer to full factory fresh conditions.

I am experiencing this problem for quite a while and in fact it is so weird that I was unable to replicate it. I will try to briefly describe it.

My system is
AMD FX 6300 3.5ghz turbo 3.8ghz.
Gtx 760 ASUS 2gb in a 16X PCI-e 2.0 slot.
2x4Gb 1600mhz DDR3 kingstom hyper memory
Gigabyte 970A D3 REV 3.0 motherboard.
VS 650W Power Supply
CPU temps never exceed 40C
GPU temps never exceed 70C.
Using latest drivers.

The system is not overclocked. Everything is running at optimal settings.

Each time I play a game for a longer period, two or one hour or so It starts lagging and stuttering. I have these annoying micro-freezes each time I walk a few meters. The frames are solid when I stand, or move around a certain area. Lets take Alien Isolation as an example since I play it now. It would be a great example.

I am getting perfect frames, around 80 frames average. After 2 hours of gameplay terrible stutters start to occur. For instance each time I open doors the game freezes for 1 second and then frames jump back to the said 80. I think it happens because new section of the map starts loading, but I fail to understand why it starts "Stuttering" after a certain amount of time and does not happen for the first time the game is launched. After I turn off the game and launch it again the problem "MAGICALLY" goes away and the stutters reoccur after the said time.

Of course this is not the only game I have noticed to have this problem with. It happened wit... Read more

I am currently having a problem with my video in Pro/Engineer Wildfire and AutoCAD 2004. In both of these drafting programs, the cursor skips when it is moving across the screen. It is not solid like it should be.

The computer is a Pentium 4 1.7 Ghz, 256 MB RAM, 36.4 SCSI hard drive, 32MB Matrox Millenium Video G450 video card and a Windows XP Pro Service Pack 2 OS. There was no problem before I upgraded this computer from Windows NT 4 workstation. In NT4 the video was flawless. Certainly not in XP.

When I upgraded the computer, I installed the newest drivers. When I noticed the problem, I rolled the driver back to its previous version which did not work. I also have the video card set to full hardware acceleration. I have swapped the current video card with one just like it with no luck. I do not have a better video card to put in the machine.

Why would the video perform flawlessly in Pro/Engineer and AutoCAD 2004 while in a Windows NT 4 environment, but be skipping around in the same programs in a Windows XP Pro SP2 environment? Would a video card with more memory solve the problem? Are there any other steps I could try to troubleshoot and find a solution to this problem? Any advice I could get on this problem would be great.

Thank you.

A:Just purchased a P53, have a few questions (Mechanical Engineer)

Fellow ME here. I work in the AEC industry and my work loads benefit the most from a few fast CPU cores. Autocad, for example, was optimal on up to 8 cores, and the user consensus was that you could get by with a decent gaming GPU (as opposed to an expensive workstation version). As I remember (and I haven't touched ANSYS and Matlab in more than 10 years), what you're using is very heavily bound by the CPU. Puget Systems has some Solidworks benchmarks that may highlight this. I got the Core i7 9850H with the Quadro T2000 and 32 GB RAM (16 GB from the factory, bought a matching stick and installed it myself afterwards) and two NVME SSDs (but my projects are on an external HDD, so these don't help as much). I'm satisfied with my decision. Back in August, when I ordered the laptop, there weren't any options for custom configurations. I would have liked the Xeon paired with the T2000, but it doesn't seem like this is an option even now. The 8 core i9 seemed very appealing, but I had to remind myself time and again that:- Turbo is no substitute for base clock, as much as the marketing hype says otherwise- I don't need as many cores (I upgraded from a 2c/4t Core i7 with a 2.8 GHz base clock and a 3.2 GHz turbo, and the actual speed in single threaded loads is not that different)- The price was better (paid for it myself), and the difference went into accessories (dock, cooling pad, RAM, additional USB hub, new carrying case). I'm not sure how much of a benefit the RTX5000... Going onto my PC, I was "shown" (Told how to run it) the Event Viewer (Never previously used by myself). It showed 100's of ERROR reports that gave some credence to their statements. I did not realise at the time that these were merely common errors reported by the system. I later deleted them after finding out how to. A security-conscious individual of many years I am ALWAYS sceptical of such phone calls but sadly this time I decided that I may indeed be speaking to a Microsoft engineer and must allow them access or perhaps my PC would indeed be a major problem in a week's time.
