Microsoft Word - problem with opening docs in Word

Q: Microsoft Word - problem with opening docs in Word

Here is a strange one. I have Microsoft Word 2000 on a computer running Windows XP SP3. I just began having a problem opening documents directly in Word. The documents will open but they are not right. For example, I have a document that is passworded out. Within Word, the document will open, but it does not ask for a password, and the contents of the document come up scrambled. Here is an excerpt of what it looks like:

This goes on for 20 pages.

However, if I go into Windows Explorer and open the document by double clicking on it there, it correctly asks for the password and opens fine. Weird, no?

I tried opening other documents from Word that do not have passwords. They open, but the documents include a bunch of formatting instructions that usually remain hidden. But from Windows Explorer they open fine. Here is an example:

Document opened with Windows Explorer

EVAN: English form of Welsh Iefan, meaning "God is gracious."

Same document opened from within Word:

EVAN: English form of Welsh Iefan, meaning "God is gracious."

Default Paragraph Font
Default Paragraph Font
aC:\Documents and Settings\Doug\Application Data\Microsoft\Word\AutoRecovery save of Document1.asd
aC:\Documents and Settings\Doug\Application Data\Microsoft\Word\AutoRecovery save of Document1.asd
?C:\Documents and Settings\Doug\My Documents\Word\Boys Names.doc?䀃老e
Times New Roman
Times New Roman
Microsoft Word 9.0
Root Entry
Microsoft Word Document

Also, once the document has been opened with Windows Explorer it opens correctly from the recent documents list under the File menu in Word as long as it stays on the list. So it is only navigating to the document files from within Word that is a problem.

What may have changed recently to have caused this?
Over the past couple of days I have been working with one of the people at bleeping computer to try to eliminate some malware. The situation with Word was NOT a symptom of the malware. Word used to work fine even with malware in the computer. But we ran a bunch of scans and virus fixers during the exercise. Perhaps something we did screwed up Word, I don't know.

If you think the answer is to uninstall and reinstall Word, that is a simple enough remedy. But I wanted to check with you before doing that in case you have heard of this and something else is actually the problem that re-installing Word won't fix.

Thank You.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi all,
I recently opened my a document from a couple years ago (Microsoft Word 2010 Starter), and it is opening up with a strange formatting - almost as if it were in Safe Mode, it has shifted from one to one and a half pages, the letters are almost blurry and spaced out. The same document opens fine on different computers. Some older documents open fine, which is also confounding.
About a year ago, I had a ZeroAccess Rootkit. To remedy it, I used Farbar Recovery Scan, Combofix, EEK, and Online Scanner. Not sure if this would have an impact.
How can I get Word to open documents properly?

A:Microsoft Word 2010 Docs Opening With Strange Formatting

Are you still using the same version of 'Word 2010 ?  If you are, it sounds like the file has got corrupted somehow, if not, it could be a compatibility issue.
You could try downloading and installing Libre Office and seeing if it opens properly in that - www.libreoffice.org - it can open a wide variety of files. If it does open looking 'right' in Libre then you can save it as a Word Document (with a different name) and then see if your version of Word will open this new version of the file.
Libre Office natively saves files in its own format but is capable also of saving them in a very wide rage of different ones. And if you don't like it, you can always uninstall it !

Hi, Welcome to SF,

Did you upgrade from Word 2003 to Word 2007 or you remove and install word 2007 ?

The Steps you could try

1, Ran a Office diagnostic
2, Delete the Normal.dotm file ( Start %appdata% > Microsoft > Template > Delete all files under there ( Don't Shift delete them )

Hope this helps

I am not able to access "word" at all.
I can not use it for my own personal projects and I cannot open any word documents such as "email attachments" .
Even when I try to click Microsoft word on my start up menu, programs ect..
I always get the same response which is a dialog box saying " installing windows" . Then another box opens and says "windows was not able to install because a dialog box is open. Please close and try again".
It does this every single time I try to read a word doc.
I went to fed-ex and was able to retrieve my "word doc." attachments contained in my emails, NO PROBLEM.
Any information would be helpful.

When did the problem first start? If you enabled system restore you could roll back to a previous recovery point.

What version of Microsoft Office do you have?

There is an option to run a repair on the office installation or some versions have diagnostics you can run.

Hi Guys - I'm new to this site and not very tech savvy or sure of which forum topic to post this under. If I'm not posting under the right topic please let me know which topic thread would be more suitable.

I run Word 2007 on Windows 7. I recently had a virus hide all my documents and programs - the virus has been removed but it has changed things around.

I cannot open the word documents I have stored in My Docs. All the icons next to the name of the word files are showing up as a little orange page - when I click on the file name, a Microsoft Office 2010 window comes up which says "The Microsoft Office Product needed to open this file is not installed on your computer". And then it has the invitation to purchase Office 2010.
Does anyone know what's going on here with this and know how I can rectify this & change this back somehow so I can open & read these docs in Word 2007 again?

I can open Word 2007 and make a new document and save it but if I go to open it again it has been converted into this other file with the orange page icon and I cannot open it.

(I can open & save in wordpad - the wordpad doc can be saved in My Docs and it will reopen so I can read it again. Also my music, picture and video files all open ok.)

I have run my antivirus (Symantec) and MBAM but they all show no virus was found. I'm not sure what should I do next, please advice.

I use Windows XP on my desk top PC. The scanner is a HP Scanjet 3300C.

About 3 days ago a problem has arisen with opening scanned Word documents.

Normally I would be able to double left click, or single right click and click Open, to open scanned documents. This applies to recently scanned docs and ones scanned months ago. Something has now changed.

I cannot open them with a double left click or a right click plus Open. I can only open them by a right click on the file and then a left click on preview in the menu.

The drop down menu brought up by a right click now has "Open with ACDSee" instead of "Open" and "Print with ACDSee" instead of "Print".

I imagine that I have inadvertently pressed something somewhere to create this problem but I have no idea what. Please can anybody advise me: a) how to stop it for future scanning and b) how to remove it from existing scanned docs?

Many Thanks in anticipation, Geof.

I'm not familiar with ACDSee but I know it's a photo software. You should check the settings in that software to make sure they haven't been configured to Open and Print by default.

One of our employees is having problems opening word documents by double clicking them in explorer. If you go into word and open it manually it works fine. I've done some experimenting in hopes of finding someone who can figure out what to do about this. Here are the details:

My saved Word docs are opening up as blanks. I compared the properties of documents in which the text was saved vs documents which had been saved but opened up as blank pages. Here are the details:

1. In file-properties-type:
Docs with text are “Microsoft Word 97–2003 Document”
Docs that open up empty are “Plain Text Document – Western European (Windows)”

2. I created a test document. Properties-type: “Microsoft Word Document”, 0 bytes.

3. When I tried to delete it I got this error message: “The action can’t be completed because the file is open in Microsoft Office Word”. This is just what happened before, The only way I could move or delete a doc was by re-booting and then it became a plain text document and opened up blank.

4. When i added text and tried to save the doc, error messages about changing the global template came up.

5. I clicked yes to change the global template thinking that this might solve the problem and my test docs converted to plain text and are blank pages.

6. When I put text onto the blank docs and try to save it the error message is: "Problem with Word.doc may contain features that are not compatible with Plain Text format. Do you want to save the document in this format?" When i click NO to preserve formatting and save in Word. I have to save the doc again and it is then saved as “Microsoft Word ... Read more

A:Solved: Word Freezes When Opening Network Docs?

Never heard of this problem before, but perhaps this article can set you off in the right direction:

Are you accessing the Word files through mapped drives? To troubleshoot this, I would try to use the full UNC path instead of mapped drives. Go to Tools, Options, File Locations, and make sure that any network paths are using the full UNC path and not the mapped drive letter. If you end up figuring this out, please post the solution here. Good luck.

Hi all,

Hoping somebody can help me out here. I sent this off to Microsoft about a month ago and have since received three emails in response, one of which said 'try reinstalling' another saying 'are you sure this is the only program in which there is a problem' and a third saying 'please bear with us, we're experiencing high levels of requests right now and need more time.' That was ten days ago.

Yes. Well. I'm hoping somebody out there can help instead

So some background information. I purchased a new laptop about two months ago, on which had Windows Vista (business) automatically installed. I installed myself Office 2007 and updated all the necessary security features and upgrades and so forth. All programs are genuine. This is a decent quality laptop - decent speed (set me back around $2k AU)

About six weeks ago now I began having problems with my computer. It would suddenly freeze on application - the screen would go white and I would lose the ability to click on anything else. alt+ctr+delete had no effect, nor did leaving it alone for a while. Every time this happened I would need to hard restart.

After a system of elimination, I realised the problem occurred when I was opening 2003 Word Documents. (Almost) every time I opened such a document I would freeze up. As a uni student, I'm constantly receiving various documents from other parties which I have been left unable to access.

A:Freezing issue when opening 2003 Word docs in Office 2007

Office 2007 can read previous versions of Office no matter which program in Office you are using, other versions will need the compatibility pack from Microsoft so they can read 2007 version.

I did use Office 2007 myself recently in a temp job for seven weeks and I don’t remember seeing an option to save a document in an earlier version format, is the computer is still under warranty?

What ram and processor have you got? Some problems with Vista are caused because If buying a new PC or laptop beware of the differences between ‘Vista-Capable’ and ‘Vista Premium Ready’
A PC that is &#8216;Vista-capable&#8217; can run Windows Vista, but won&#8217;t necessarily get everything working. <<<<<<<<

&#8216;VistaPremium-ready&#8217; PC, can get all of the more demanding features such as Aero working correctly.

At the very least Vista needs a truckload of memory and a lot of the cheaper notebooks only come with 512mb of ram unless you have paid for extra, where at least a gig is needed, Ideally 2 gig of memory would be the way to go.

But you did say a reasonable lap top and going by what you wrote it obviously was not like this at the beginning. (Two weeks after you brought it, it started to play up, or is that when you installed Office and its been playing up since you installed it? (I am still thinking will post again if something comes to mind)

Hi folks,

I have this problem that is hard to search for on Google. We have a lot of word 2000 documents connected to a simpel text data file (data.doc) that is used with mail merge.

Here is our process:
1.) data.doc is opened, filled with all variablenames we can use in our documents (name, country, etc.)
2.) data.doc is opened, filled with the actual data (from a database) belonging to the variables name (Kees, Japan, etc.)
3.) Our vb.net 2008 application does step 1 and 2, then starts a template word 2000 document which has that data.doc file attached for mail merge. The template is now filled in with the correct data.
4.) vb.net 2008 application tells MS Word to print the document.
5.) Works fine and we have ourselves a nice document filled in with data we specified in the vb.net 2008 application.

Now comes the problem, some new computers will have office 2007 instead of office 2000 installed, during testing we have encountered that it does not error but the office 2007 installed computer does not fill in the data and just shows mergefield names <<name>> <<country>>. Also when printed out. So it seems like the datafile is not connected when opening the template in word 2007.

If we let our vb.net 2008 application show us the document visually first, we can re-attach the data file again and we can print the data, however there are 3 thing wrong with this approach:

1.) More user input which is not needed.
2.) MS Word is opening and showing, somet... Read more

Until recently I could open Word documents attached to emails sent or received in Windows Live Mail. Suddenly this has stopped.

Other file types e.g. Excel still open if I double click on them or choose open - up comes a box that asks 'do you want to open this file? and I simply click 'open'. But for the past week or so I have been unable to open attached Word documents. If I double click on the word doc or click open the document opens in Wordpad. I have spent hours looking online and trying to sort this out.

Can anyone help me please? I want to be able to double click or hit the 'open' option and have the document open in Word, like it used to. I know I can use 'save as ' but it's more time consuming.

Can anyone think why this would just change like this?

I'm not sure when this started as I have not used Office in a few weeks.  My computer uses Windows 7.  Today, I went to open a document in Word and it said "File Conversion--Select the encoding that makes your document readable."  I can choose between Windows, MS-DOS, or other encoding.  I went to check another file and it says "The file cannot be opened because there are problems with the contents."  It also says "The file is corrupt and cannot be opened."  I get the same kinds of messages with every document and with my PowerPoint as well.  All of my Office is 2007.
I tried running my AVG Free and SUPERAntiSpyware Free Edition and they did not pick up anything.  I also tried restoring to my last update, but was told that I cannot because the file was changed in the process.  I had to restore for another, unrelated issue about a week ago and it worked fine.
I'm thinking this is some kind of virus but I have no idea how to handle it since nothing is picking it up and I can't restore to even three days ago.  Any help would be IMMENSELY appreciated, as I am a college student and need to be able to hand in final papers!

When I attempt to open a Microsoft Word document (new or existing), I get a window with the following message: The command cannot be performed because a dialog box is open, Click OK and then close dialog boxes to continue. When I click OK, I get a box titled Windows Installer - preparing to install. It runs for a while, then goes off and nothing else happens. I cannot get into any word documents. I am a novice at this and could use some guidance. Thanks!

Which version of Word is it?

It may be looking for a missing MSI file, try running it with the Office CD in the drive so it can find the missing files (or make a copy of them somewhere on HD).

I noticed one day that microsoft word was not opening properly. I removed it from the computer and went and purchased 2010 office. Everything loaded fine except Word. It will not open at all. The techs from the location I purchased it have been trying to fix it for a month (off and on). They have had no luck.

Hello everyone, I've been having some issues with Word 97 lately and I'm absolutely stumped. Any help would be wonderful...

Twice now, I've had Word 97 tell me that it cannot open select documents; a few weeks ago I tried to open a doc and it gave me this message:

Word cannot open the document.
Try one or more of the following:
* On the File menu, click Open to open the document.
* Make sure the file has a .DOC extension

I did both; it would not open from the File menu and it DID have a .doc extension. I tried everything I could think of to get it back, including moving it to another computer and trying to open in there, renaming the document, everything. The closest I got to getting it back was opening it in WordPad - even then, it ate certain paragraphs up and lost the last page completely.

After having no luck at getting it back, I decided that since the document was only 3 pages long, I could stand to retype it and deleted the document. I had no problems opening up any of my many other documents; and so I figured, somehow that one file got corrupted and I just needed to cut it as a loss.

But now, it has happened again with another, much longer document. Again, I can get some of it back with WordPad/RTF, but not all of it. As before, all other documents are fine and openable, just not this one. I have scanned for viruses and the like - my computer seems to be clean. I have moved all my other documents to a removable flash drive so that they don't... Read more

It strongly suggests that your problems stem from using Word 97 on Vista.

It is not a recommended activity to do so and many others have problems with trying to operate Office 97 on Vista.

Windows 7 Home with MS Office 2007 installed. The issue is specific to WORD. If we open the WORD application and then navigate to a file, the file opens OK. If on the other hand, we navigate to a file, we get an error message...."There was a problem sending the command to the program." I've already researched the web for answers and tried 3 different solutions offered to no avail. We did a repair via the Office CDs and that did not fix the problem.

Here is another observation: If we navigate to an EXCEL file, EXCEL opens the file "DIRECTLY" with no problems. The EXCEL files are in the same folder as the WORD files. If we attempt to open a WORD file, we will get a USER ACCOUNT CONTROL window first and then the error message. The USER ACCOUNT CONTROL window does not appear when opening an EXCEL file.

Looking at the Control Panel and Default programs, the DOCX and DOC extensions are all properly set to be opened by Microsoft Office 2007 Word.

Any ideas on how to solve this one will be appreciated. We have thought about reloading WORD but I frankly to not think this is an application problem. I believe this to be a file linkage to the program problem.

Hi folks,

I have a problem with my pc (Im not sure if its actually a virus- I think I might have deleted something a while back in the registry trying to fix something else that mightve caused it).

I tried reinstalling office but that made no difference. I looked on the microsoft page and tried all their fixed but no luck. .

ms paint comes up with

"mspaint.exe - Bad Image

C:\WIndowszsystem32zodbcint.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error. Try installing the program again...etc.."

msword part opens but instantly comes up with a dialog box saying

"Microsoft Word has stopped working"

Most other programs work fine, including weirdly microsoft excel

Thanks for your help in advance,
