i'm using Windows xp, Mobile Intel(R) 965 Express Chipset Family for my graphics.
these i think the most relevant for this issue.
btw, all the other function keys work. thanks again
I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.
I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.
You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi, Try the following. Download the AMD HD Graphics installer on the following link and save it to your Downloads folder. http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp74501-75000/sp74716.exe When done, open your Downloads folder, right click the AMD Graphics installer and select 'Run as Administrator' to start the installation. When this has completed, shutdown the notebook. Unplug the AC Adapter and then remove the battery. Hold down the Power button for 30 seconds. Re-insert the battery and plug in the AC Adapter. Tap away at the esc key as you start the notebook to launch the Start-up Menu and then select f10 to enter the bios menu. Press f9 to load the defaults ( this is sometimes f5, but the menu at the bottom will show the correct key ), use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter. Press f10 to save the setting and again use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter. Start the notebook and let Windows fully load for a few minutes before checking. Model - HP Notebook 15-R203txOS - Windows 8.1 Pro 64-BitGraphics - Intel HD 5500 Integrated NVIDIA GeForce 820M Dedicated I have updated the drivers for both my integrated as well dedicated graphics card but still my function keys f2 and f3 for Brightness control is not working altough all other function keys are working. this PC comes with DOS but i have booted it with Windows 8.1 Pro 64 bit.
Hi, Well that does explain why your f2/f3 keys aren't working as you only have the basic Microsoft driver installed - if the Intel driver was previously installed Ok, this may indicate a hardware issue. What happens if you try to install the Intel HD 5500 driver directly from Intel - it's the 2nd file in the list on the following link. https://downloadcenter.intel.com/search?keyword=Intel%C2%AE+HD+Graphics+5500+for+5th+Generation+Intel%C2%AE+Core%E2%84%A2+Processors If this does install Ok, restart the notebook and let Windows fully load for a couple of minutes before checking. I am pretty well versed with upgrades from Windows and HP. I purchased and registered this new HP Envy Notebook HP - m7-n109dx a month ago. After either Windows or HP updates the Function keys for Dim, Brightness and Volume had stopped working. After this began I rolled back and resinstalled video and keyboard drivers one at a time and rebooted the system. Nothing is working. We need somone to give us a patch to download to fix this universal problem. I scoured this forum and many others but because this computer is a 2016 computer there are not many expert suggestions from HP or power users to resolve this problem. On the other hand, I see complaints in many forums about the problem, hence the description as being a universal problems. Is it a Windows Updates for W10 that is the culprit? Is the newest BIOS update from HP that is the problem? I do know my machine worked great for two weeks until updates from HP and Windows began pouring in. Could we please have an expert reslove this without speculation? I have done all that any expert would do to resove the problem. No, I am not going to reset the system either. Thank you in advance to whomever the hero will be with the right answer.Read other answers
I purchased Dell Inspiron 5558 (with Windows 10) just two months ago (Nov 2015). Everything was working fine. However, recently I started to notice an annoying thing with the function keys F11 and F12 for reducing and increasing the brightness respectively.
Without using the Fn key (next to Windows key), if I hit F11 it was reducing the brightness and F12 was increasing the brightness earlier - as expected. Now, sometimes, the laptop monitor goes to sleep mode the moment I hit F11 or F12. I have to press the power button again to wake it up. This behavior is very off and on and not consistent.
Did any settings get changed? How to fix this? Please help.
FYI - I have not changed the BIOS settings from default which could be multimedia. I can say this because other multimedia keys in the same row behave normally (even when this strange behavior is noticed in F11 and F12).
The settings for those FN keys are handled by the Dell Quickset Utility, and later the Dell Command Configuration application, so any changes you would want to make would be done in that application.
I would suggest going into that application and seeing if you can change the settings. Putting a system to sleep is one of the functions available so perhaps the configuration has changed. If you want additional help please click on my Dell Todd username and send me a private message with the Dell Service Tag of the system and I'll see if I can help. Please keep all discussions and troubleshooting here in this thread so that others, with the same questions or problems, can see what is done to resolve.
Using the laptop on battery, when I press on F11-12, the brightness meter is shown on the upper left like usual, but it won't move up or down. Yet I think it's strange that all other places I can adjust brightness are fine, and especially strange that everything is working totally fine on AC power.
I tried uninstalling the Generic PnP monitor and reinstalling, but to no results. Also, both my power settings on battery and on power indicate no adaptive brightness.
The screen Brighteness is being the same its unable to adjust, I tried all sort of things but invain. So finally I came to know that, there is some PCI Device is not installed. Kindly tell me where to find that and how to install.

well when my laptop is plugged in it shows maxiumum brightness, but when its not plugged in it become brighter, yet brightness setting shows in the middle, for not plugged in, how can i get the plugged in brightness to equal unplugged brightness, and I have tried changing power settings.
First of all, please specify maker and model of your laptop. Some vendors could have their own third party replacements for some functions.
Also, please go to Control Panel - Power Options - on the right side of your current active power plan select "Change plan settings" - in the next window click "Change ADVANCED power settings" - then navigate to - Display - Display brightness and check percentage.
I have a HP dv6 laptop, intel core I3, 4 GB, running windows 7 sp1.

Is there a hotkey button to adjust the brightness on the laptop? If so maybe it is stuck or sticking.
EDIT: My sister has the same laptop try holding the Fn button and tapping the F7 and F8 buttons to adjust the brightness. Those buttons might be sticking causing the issue.
I've recently got a new computer laptop with Windows 7 and the first thing I noticed that the screen is much brighter (and maybe more saturated) than my previous laptop (with Windows XP). First I thought it was my laptop, but then I saw an other computer with Windows 7, and the screen there is very bright too. I searched the net and I see that there are more people complaining about the brightness on Windows 7.
I understand that I can set the screen brightness, but it seems like a fact that the "default" brightness on Windows 7 is way brighter than on Windows XP. Some people are probably accustomed to this, but to me it's too much. I can decrease the brightness with the laptopl's controls on the keyboard, but I think that's not the way to go - I think I should look at the Windows 7 configuration. I could go to the ATI Catalyst, but is there an other way? Is the Calibration tool the only option?
And the second question, if this is a common problem, maybe there are some known settings that would take Windows 7 brightness closer to Windows XP and earlier versions?
If these are new laptops then, yes they will be brighter then older computers. But it has nothing to do with Windows. It has to do with the display themselves. A lot of the new LCDs on modern laptops are brighter quite a bit brighter then previous generations in part, moving to LEDs for the backlight.Read other 6 answers
I have a NIVIDIA RIVA TNT2 MODEL 64P monitor with Windows XP installed. The brightness, color etc. on the monitor seem to be at the max but all images/pictures/movie files etc are very dark. Is there any other way to adjust the brightness on the monitor?
I think that's just your video card type. If your monitor is old and this has been gradually getting worse then it could be going. You can usually adjust the brightness with your video card settings.
Right click desktop, choose properties, settings, advanced. You may have to try a few of the tabs to find the controls.
Last tuesday I've received my new laptop / netbook: Asus X205TA. After installing everything I found out that my brightness isn't adjusting. I've tried to:
- Use all different ways to adjust brightness (charms bar, shortcut, power plan settings etc.)
- Windows update
- Update Microsoft Basic Display Adapter drivers (there are no updates available)
- Disable and re-enable the Display Adapter
Yet: it's not working. I've also have a problem booting up games. Even the simplest of games (as the netbook is low-spec) are either not booting up, or they show errors about not being able to access the video card or so. I wonder whether these issues have something to do with the brightness settings.
I'd appreciate any input from you guys
Well issue is that your graphics cards drivers are't installed, nor detected! So you are stuck with Basic Display Adapter Drivers

Hi there guys,
I have a problem with my dell inspiron m301z laptop,

So its like the brightness is adjusting automatically depending on the virtual environment. However this does not happen when the adapter is plugged in, everything stays equal all the time,

I recently upgraded from WIN98SE to WINXP. Before the upgrade I used to go into my Display settings to adjust the brightness on my monitor through the video card, but now through XP I cannot find that function. My video card is a Nvidia Riva TNT2 64MB card. I have a brightness adjustment in the monitor settings, but that is already adjusted at 100% and I need to adjust up a little bit more. Does that make sense? Does someone know where I can find this now that I am on XP?
Uninstall your NVidia display adapter. Run one of these to be sure all the driver files are removed: Driver Cleaner Professional or Nasty File Remover.
Then, install the most recent driver:
You'll find color, brightness, gamma adjustments in the advanced display properties and a separate adjustment for DirectX overlays, such as video player windows.
I just got the HP Pavilion 27xi IPS LED Backlit Monitor at work, working on a computer running Windows 10. I'm pretty tech-saavy, but I cannot figure out how to adjust the brightness! I've tried the F9/F10 function; doesn't work. I then thought it might be an issue with the driver, so I went to Settings -> Displays -> Advanced Display Settings -> Display Adaptor Properties -> Monitor (tab) -> Properties -> Driver (tab) -> Update Driver but got the "The best driver software for your device is already installed" message. Under the Settings -> Displays screen, there's no option for adapting the brightness and I've scoured the forums, but none of the solutions presented are working. Should I manually install an older version of the driver software? Any other potential solutions?Read other answers
I have an ASUS S400CA running Windows 8.1 (64 bit) and I am having a major issue. When I click Fn + F5/F6 to increase or decrease the brightness, nothing is happening. I have tried to fix this issue by changing brightness settings in the Control Panel, Battery Options, etc. but nothing is working.
How do I fix this issue? Is this is a driver issue? I have tried to find previous versions of the Intel HD Graphics 4000 Driver on the Asus website but only find the one I am using. What should I do? This is urgent!

Hi everyone, I have a pretty weird tech problem.
What happens is, whenever I adjust my monitor's brightness (from its physical buttons) the screen turns black. However the monitor is still on, the LED is still green and the computer is still responsive, the screen just turns black.
I can use the computer just fine, as long as I don't try to adjust anything. If I do want to change something, I have to change the values a little, then restart, change them again, restart until I have the values I want. This problem appeared when I tried to adjust the brightness by keeping the + button pressed down, so it increased quickly.
Is this indicative of a dying monitor ? It is pretty old, it's an LG L1750SQ, 17 inch LCD, it's over 4 years old. Also, I do not believe the video card to the problem, since it stays pretty cool, it has a good heatsink on it.

Pressing any of the hot keys results in an f1-12 rather than the previous function of changing volume, toggling keyboard lights and changing brightness etc. This happened around the time of me installing some new drivers for an audio interface so may be related to that. Hi. Using a crappy Dell Inspiron B130 w/ Windows XP here. A while ago, a fun little accident left certain keys on my keyboard completely inoperable. The F keys toggle between Media and normal functions by using the FN key. Try using the FN key with the brightness F key--which is not necessarily F11 or F12. Check your manual. The sun symbols on the Function keys might tell you where the brightness settings are. On my model it is F3 & 4.
You can reverse the toggle settings to make the function you use most the default. The default doesn't use the FN key.

HP does not post Windows 8 drivers for that laptop just 7 and 10. Check device manager and see what is showing for display adapter. If it is Microsoft Basic brightness adjustment will not work.
