10/100 Ethernet/Wireless Ethernet PCI combo

Q: 10/100 Ethernet/Wireless Ethernet PCI combo

Are you guys aware of a single pci card that offers the typical ethernet connection as well as a wireless one? I'd like to have the option to connect to either and I don't want to get two seperate cards. Any info is appreciated, Thanks

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello,

I have an ethernet cable run in my house. What I need to figure out is if there is such thing an ethernet switch that does not require a power source. (or something that can get this situation resolved)

Here is my situation:
I have a cable ran to my basement, and have a bedroom directly above the basement that needs an ethernet run. It is not possible for me to run a completely new cable from the original starting point, so I was somehow hoping to use the cable going to the basement, put a head on it, put it into a switch/hub/splitter and run a cable out of it to the room directly above, and use the other cable coming out to stay in the basement.

Is there something that can do this for me? Is there a better way to do so? What would you suggest? Thanks!

UPDATE: Please refer to post #4 for more details.

I've had trouble connecting to my own internet and have no wireless. I'm using my neighbor's wireless and it's really slowing her's down.

I've tried restarting my laptop (it usually works) and then reinstalled the device under "device manager". It's not the cord, I've checked with my neighbor's laptop and it works fine.

I use a Sony Vaio VGN-NS140E with Windows Vista SP2. I'm not sure what other information to give.

So a couples of days ago my computer lost connection a few times, but it got back up running without any problems, yesterday however I had huge problems browsing trough the internet and had problems connecting to pages several times, but downloading worked just fine, but today I'm not able to do anything, it keeps disconnecting and reconnecting, but when its connected the connection is so bad that I can't access a single site.
I know it must be something wrong with my computer, because I've tested two different cables in two different ports, and I know one of the cables must work since I have no problems connecting to the internet on my Xbox 360, and all the other computers in the house have no internet problems what so ever, including the wireless connection on my laptop, and I also run into the same connection problem even in safe mode.
I noticed that the light on my ethernet port is solid orange, but usually it is green, and I've tried to do a virus scan to check if that might be the problem, but I doubt it since I haven't accessed any pages I don't usually visit in a while and it didn't find any viruses.
I have had some problems with the ethernet port before, but nothing that was permanent, I have experienced that my computer has had connection problems while everyone else in the house have had no problems, but after waiting a bit it suddenly reconnects and has worked just fine for many many months, and I've only experienced this pr... The metal thingy was busted so I pushed it back and put it in place with a pair of toothpicks. However, the ethernet cable goes out just enough to disconnect me. Can I buy only that metal part, if that's in fact the issue why my cable goes out just a little? I saw just a litle plastic thing that broke off too, is that the thing that keeps the cable locked (can I improvise and how)?My job is on the internet, so it brings the food on my table, please dear people, tell me if there's anything I can do? Been having issue for more than a year. When my provider (Charter cable with static ip) drops my internet connection I have to start "at the wall" meaning reboot cable modem then wireless router then reboot laptop to reconnect to internet. Takes 1/2 hour. Charter seems to be dropping internet more and more so this can happen once per week or sometimes every day or 3. Have narrowed it down to this. With internet working just fine. Can use wireless from phone to surf web. Can even enable wireless adapter on laptop and connect to internet via wireless. So internet is not the issue. I very seldom use wireless and instead use my ethernet connection. I keep wireless adapter disabled. Very simply, internet is working. I am using ethernet connection. All is good. Simply unplug ethernet cable from laptop then reconnect ethernet cable. I have no internet until I reboot my laptop. Reboot works fine but getting tired of having to do so every time Charter drops my internet. John

Hi there,

I have a desktop with Windows XP (SP2 32-bit) and a Dell Laptop with Windows 7 (64-bit). Both have one Network Interface card each. Desktop's NIC is connected to a cable modem for internet. I wish to run internet on both the systems, for that I bought a USB-to-ETHERNET connector and an ethernet cable, so that I could connect USB end to the desktop and the other end (with ethernet cable) to my lappy, and could be able to share internet connection. The USB-to-ETHERNET connector came with an installation cd which I have installed already and I have setup the whole connection but unable to share the internet connection. May be there is some configuration problem or so.. Internet is running fine on desktop. Please help...
Thanks in advance..!!!

PS- I am able to connect both the systems by connecting ethernet cable to both NICs.

A:networking using USB-to-ETHERNET connector and an ethernet cable

Upgrade the XP to SP3.

Then show for both systems ...

Start, Run, CMD, OK to open a command prompt:
(For Vista or 7 type CMD in the Search box after Start)

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

[Note that there is no space between the slash and ALL.]

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If necessary use a text file and removable media to copy the results to a computer with internet access.

I want to make this wireless since I bought a new macbook and was wondering if this product would do it? http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B006PYGWG6

I don't know much about it but I was concerned because the Router Mode says 'cable connection only' and I'm not sure the connection is cable (is it ADSL?). Will I need anything else like a modem?

Any advice?

A little confusion here - When I log onto my Verizon router page (that 198.xxx thing), I show many menus but the following 2 have me a little confused. One says "network connection" type is: Ethernet - I do have a yellow cable coming out of my Actiontec router to the pc so I get that. Another menu says "wireless settings" and this says "wireless" which I have set to WPA and the mode is 802.11g "only". Is this system wireless or ethernet or both? I would like to do the pc to tv connection for netflix movies at some point.. Am I all set with this configuration? (knowing I have to buy a box of some sort, Roku or Apple or something) and if I do have a wireless connection, can I connect the two without cables running from one to another? Hope that is all clear. Thanks in advance.

A:Ethernet or wireless?

Is this system wireless or ethernet or bothClick to expand...

both

you have a wireless router - and so you can connect to the router with a cable as you currenty are doing and other devices PCs etc or your PC can also connect with wireless
I would like to do the pc to tv connection for netflix movies at some point..Click to expand...

someone else will need to answer the netflix service

from what I can see on the website
http://www.netflix.com/HowItWorks#faq1
you can watch via a PC

http://www.netflix.com/HowItWorks#faq1
Can I also watch instantly on my PC or Mac?

Yes. Simply press Play on any TV episode or movie to instantly watch it online on your Internet-connected PC or Mac.Click to expand...

so you can watch directly on your PC without any other device - and then if you have your PC video output connected to the TV you should be able to watch on TV via PC

whats the make and model of TV
- what outputs do you have on the PC video card ?
- what inputs do you have on the TV

if you have HDMI on both - then you should be able to use that - although for some copyright materials you will only be able to display on the TV and not two monitors

Atheros Wireless Adapter - AR5007EG & AR5007
Over the last couple of years we have been seeing a lot of problems with the above adapters, mainly concerning WPA and WPA2 encryption and mainly on windows Vista.
We have seen just a couple of issues on other windows operating system, windows XP and windows 7.

Windows XP:- A driver update has resolved the issue
Windows 7 :- No conclusive results for a fix

The wireless adapter gets an IP configuration, and shows as connected, but communication is non-existent or sporadic.

Log into the Router and disable the wireless security and see if you are now able to connect to the internet and surf OK.
Please post back a reply here, and let us know if that works or does not work.
If you post back the make and exact model of the router - we can advise how to disable the wireless security

Here are a number of possible solutions

--- 1) In Device Manager right click on the wireless adapter and "update driver."

--- 2) Download and install the latest wireless driver from your laptop manufacturer's web site support section,

If you post a reply here with the Make and EXACT model of your PC, along with the windows version you are running. we will see if we can find a link to the driver and will post a reply with the link here.

A:ethernet and wireless together

If I am going to use ethernet for an extended time I remove an external wireless adapter or switch an integrated wireless off. But that's to extend the life of the unused component and to save the battery if on battery. If you are using a PCI wireless card with the desktop then disabling it is probably the best you can do. But that is not going to impact your ethernet usage, so it is really your choice.

Please show the following for when you have an ethernet connection and for when it has dropped ...

Open a (black) Command Prompt window:
Hold the Windows logo key and press r; in the Run box type cmd and click on OK.

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

[Note that there is no space between the slash and ALL.]

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.

If necessary use a text file and removable media to copy the results to a computer with internet access.

Here's something that is causing massive loss of hair.....

My PC is connected to my router with a wireless card. I also connect my PS2 to my PC using an ethernet connection (the ps2 is "modified" and I use this connection to play music and video thru the ps2 to the TV).

Everything works fine with one exception. It seems like the wireless is not getting a DNS. To obtain one, I have to disable the ethernet card, connect to my AP, then enable the card. If I lose my connect with the AP (which happens sometimes, it's on the other side of the house and the signal is a little weak), then when it reconnects I have to do the whole disable/enable thing.

It's not a huge deal, but I do like my stuff to work properly and usually things like this are not problem for me, but this one really has me wondering. Anyone have any ideas?

Here's my ipconfig /all if that helps. What's odd is the ipconfig is *exactly* the same when I can connect and when I can't. So maybe it's not a DNS issue, but something else. But I am unable to connect to any web sites until I disable and re-enable the ethernet card.

That probably means that they want to restrict usage to one computer per connection and do not want wireless networks set up. So, please check with the IT department before doing anything, as it's not very hard for them to detect violations.

On the assumption that you will not attempt this unless it falls within the rules, you can use a Wireless Access Point (WAP). Use encryption, preferably WPA2-PSK, AES, but at least WPA-PSK, TKIP. Use a passphrase that cannot be guessed and does not include dictionary words.

Is there such a thing as a 5 Ghz Ethernet card, or is just 5 Ghz wireless?

A:Ethernet vs. wireless

No - 2.4/5 GHZ refer to the wireless frequency.

Ethernet comes in two speeds mostly - older 100 Mb/s (100 megabits) or more modern 1000 Mb/s (1 Gigabit). Of course, these are usually much faster than internet speeds even for slower 100 Mb/s unless you have amazingly fast broadband.

So I just bought myself a new laptop (hp dv6910us) and I'm enjoying it thoroughly but I have a very basic question about what to use in terms of internet. What i was thinking, was loosing the ethernet cord and turning this computer in to a wireless connection like the other two, but if i do will i loose speed? This computer currently gets between 700-950 kbps., depending on traffic.

Your internet speed is determined by your provider and the package you have, it is irrelevant how fast your connection to router is as long as it is at least a little faster than speed to the provider. So you can not change the internet speed above what provider gives you.

I have a Linksys BEFW11S4 4 port wireless broadband router with 2 x wireless laptops that can see each other and share files fine. I also have a PC which is hardwired to the router. All 3 machines have an IP address from the range I configured and all 3 machines can access the internet. The problem I'm having is that my hardwired PC cannot see the workgroup I have set up so therefore it can't see the 2 wireless laptops. The 2 wireless laptops can see the hardwired PC but cannot connect to it to view the shared folders.

I have switched all firewalls off, changed lots of config in the router, reset it to default, rebuilt my hardwired PC, pulled out some hair, changed network settings all over the place but just cannot get the hardwired PC to see the workgroup.

Any suggestions anyone ! !

A:! ! ! ! ! Ethernet Can't See Wireless ! ! ! ! !

Well, as long as all three are getting DHCP addresses from the same network, then the router isn't to blame, so, get it configured and leave it alone.

You say you've setup a workgroup for the laptops. That desktop machine also needs to be a part of that same workgroup. Then, you need to have the same username and password combination on the three machines, and then the desktop should be able to share files with the laptops.

And you definitely want the firewalls disabled until you get things working.

Before, it was working fine, but some viruses started to mess around with the internet and registry keys, but I believe I have cleared almost all of the malware, if not all of it.
The last time I was able to connect to the internet was May 20th, I've neglected this computer for a while, and now the antivirus programs (Malwarebytes, Comodo) are out of date.
When I look at the wireless or ethernet connection status, there are 0 packets coming in or out and the ip address it attempts to connect to is 169.254.53.220
I've attempted to reset the modem and router, and set a manual address for it to connect to, but none of that helped.
What more information should I post, and what should be my first step to solving this problem?

Side note: Also, I've finally managed to accrue some money since I have a job now, but I don't remember the moderator that helped me last time, any way I can find out who he/she was? I'd very much like to thank them with a donation.

Hello I have been having a problem with my ethernet work but wireless not. It basically says acquiring IP address then says limited connectivity. Im using a Dell Vostro 1520 laptop and a dlink router. Thanks for your help.

A:Ethernet works but wireless does not

Check.
You have no conflicting wireless managers installed try using only the Windows built in tool
Remove any unneeded wireless networks from your system.
Remove and re add your network back in, ensure all settings are configured correctly. Connect firstly with the cable and note down everything exactly. i.e. SSID, Security type, encryption type, security key.
If it still dosent work look into updating or rolling back the drivers for your wireless card.

I am lookin for some advice on a networking problem. I have a hp pc connected to the net thru an ethernet cable with a wirless router from talktalk and vista os. I have an advent laptop connected wireless to the same router. Both recieve and connect to the internet fine. My pc can find my laptop and transfer files from it thru public but my laptop does not recognise my pc nor the printer on it, any ideas as this is driving me mad.

A:wireless laptop and ethernet pc

You cannot see Vista PC in network on the laptop, correct.
What is the OS on the laptop?
Can you ping the PC from the laptop by IP and Name?
Do you have a password at sign on for laptop?
If Vista PC has "Password protected sharing" on, you will need to set up an account on it with laptop's User name and password.
What is the exact make/model of router?
Make/model of both compuetrs?
What firewalls are you using on both machines?
Have you tried connecting with the firewalls turned off?

Hello, are we can make ICS with Ethernet and wireless at same time? If can, how to apply it?

A:ICS with LAN/Ethernet Card and Wireless

Hi crossnet,

Can you please explain what you mean by "at the same time"? A description of the desired setup would be helpful.

Cheers,

i have had a bad relationship with at&t i'm getting really tired of it so i had the idea of getting verison, unforunetly they don't offer any service where i live, i saw an ad for verison broadband network, that comes with a netbook. i had the idea of getting that deal, and pay $30 a month rather than $100 for this crappy At&t connection. i though that i could could uplink/bridge the broadband and ethernet internet into our houses Ethernet/wireless router. i have been working on it with my computer, this is my set up. i have my wireless pc connected to the router. i have an ethernet port on the back, witch i have connected to another wireless wrouter, were a laptop then connects to that router, i know that sometimes the router won't uplink the signal, i have a fios router that has a WLAN connection aside from the Coaxe connection. both should allow incomming connections. so give me some guidence, i'll take anything. thanks for all your help, thank you.

Hi Sssstud,

Please let us know the message you see when you try to establish a wireless connection to the internet. Is your computer able to detect wireless networks? What version of Windows are you using and what is the model and name of the wireless router?

Thanks and regards,

I was reading this thread on the steam forums and I know I have a realtek ethernet nic in my pc. I also have bad performance in tf2

My pc is connected to the internet through my wireless network though, which makes me think the above fix wouldn't work for me. Am I right, or does my wlan card interact with the realtek ethernet nic?

BTW, I'm posting here because most people on the steam forums don't seem to know what their talking about, at least when it comes to hardware.

I network an XP box and a 98 box via wired Ethernet. Currently, a DSL connection is shared via a Zoom modem with a built-in router (5651_X4_2_2) connected to a Linksys switch (EtherFast 10/100 5-Port Workgroup Switch EZXS55W).

Just bought a laptop with a wireless card installed and want to share Internet connection and files wirelessly as already done via wired Ethenet (between XP box and a 98 box). Laptop features VISTA Home Premium.

Instead of connecting the Laptop to the switch via a patch cable (to share DSL and files), thought maybe there's a type of Ethernet to wireless adapter product that simply plugs into a port on the switch that would in turn transfer a wireless signal to the laptop. Or not?

Thanks in advance.

Im sure this is something really simple but basically with my laptop i can connect to my router wirelessly fine but when connected via an ethernet cable web pages dont load although everything states its connected???
When you attempt to load a page the load bar starts to work in the bottom right hand corner to indicate its loading but doesnt go any further than halfway and never loads?
My security programme is ESET and have attempted disabling the personal firewall in the hope this may help but no joy.
Have tried another laptop connected up via ethernet cable and that laptop worked fine loading pages problem free??
To me this seems odd but could be relatively simple as it states connection, can be prooved to work fine on another laptop so it must be something on my laptop stopping it going any further??
Could anyone please lend some much needed advice pls? would be much appraciated
thanks
Paul

A:Can connect wireless but not via ethernet ?

Try these simple tests using the wired connection only with the wireless disconnected.
Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands one at a time, followed by the Enter key:

NOTE: For the items below in red surrounded with < >, see comments below for the actual information content, they are value substitutions from the previous IPCONFIG command output! Do NOT type <computer_IP_address> into the command, that won't work. Also, the < and > in the text is to identify the parameters, they are also NOT used in the actual commands.

Do NOT include the <> either, they're just to identify the values for substitution.

IPCONFIG /ALL

PING <computer_IP_address>

PING <default_gateway_address>

PING <dns_servers>

PING 74.125.45.100

PING yahoo.com

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard.
Paste the results in a message here.

<computer_IP_address> - The IP Address of your computer, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above. (For Vista/Win7, the IPv4 Address)

<default_gateway_address> - The IP address of the Default Gateway, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

<dns_servers> - The IP address of the first (or only) address for DNS Servers, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

When I bring my laptop home, I plug in a Cat5 cable and boot it up. Windows 7 then hooks up to my router with both the cable and via wireless. When I then transfer files from it, they transfer at the lower wireless speeds. If I disable the wireless on the laptop, the transfer speed increases to Cat5 levels.

Is there some way to get it to use the wired connection instead of the wireless connection without having to disable the wireless adapter in Device Manager (which means I have to re-enable it when I take the laptop on the road again)?

A:Wireless vs Cat5 ethernet

When the eithernet cable is plugged in it takes over the wireless connection and only the wired connection is used. In other words it should be happening automatically as soon as you plug in the cable.

Quite a few have tested this including myself so unless your system is somehow different than everyone else's I can't imagine why you would be having this problem.
