Weird phone call from Windows Support Center?

Q: Weird phone call from Windows Support Center?

Okay, this is just weird....
.... phone rings, call display shows up as UNKNOWN, I was expecting another phone survey or something but before I hang up I figure I'd at least see wgo it is. He asks for me by name then says he's from the "Windows Support Center" or something like that. I can tell he's at a call center in India or something, poor phone connection, I can hear other people in the back ground.

He says our computer is sending out error messages every time we're on the web or something like that, might be from a virus or some kinda windows errors. We have 5 computers, I think I'm clever by asking him which one he's talking about and he replies "the one running Windows 7".

Okay, so I'm skeptical, but figure I'll see where this foes.

So he asks me to run EVENTVWR on that computer which brings up a "even viewer: window, he asks me to look under WINDOWS LOGS - APPLICATIONS and read to him what the sources are, he asks me how many there is etc. I tell them there are hundreds, he asks for the sources and gives me some kinda techno talk as to what's causing that error.
Then he asks what the sources are for the ones marked in yellow as a warning, get more techno talk.

Next he asks me to run WWW.SUPPORT.ME which brings up a "support connection" window "powered byLogMeIn ". It asks for a 6 digit code which he gives me. Now I don't know what to expect, for all I know this will open something up and I tell him I don't know if I can believe him. He says "up to you" so I hang up.
So what the hell was this?

Here's the link to the LogMeIn website, anyone heard of them?

Preferred Solution: Weird phone call from Windows Support Center?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Received fraudulent phone call from 18883113841 claiming to be a dell tech support who later started verbally abusing and cursing. Seems like info has been stolen from Dell. Dell is not taking responsibility and leaving it's customer vulnerable that undermines the trust on the entire Dell company. Who would like to buy from Dell knowing that privacy will be compromised? On behalf of all affected customers, I request Dell to provide the affected customer necessary safeguards to help rebuild the customers trust on Dell by acknowledging their sufferings. Thank you very much.

I just got a call from someone claiming to be with Windows Global Support. They are calling because I have a Windows product that has been sending out errors. They feel I have an online infection and want to help me. Really?

They are right in that there are Errors and Warnings listed in the Computer Management Windows logs. I really don't know what to think.

Anyone else run into this?

I just received a phone call from a person purporting to be from the Windows Technical Center, Jacksonvill, FL (888-970-4250) who said that they have noted a security issue with my computer.  This person asked me to open the run command line and bring
up the windows event viewer (eventvwr).  Prior to opening up windows event viewer I asked for verification of this person's credentials and he gave me the information above, and a name that I did not write down.
The process appeared to be somewhat suspicious and I said that I would need to verify this person and organization and call back the toll free number before I went any further.
I was wondering if anyone has had a similar experience and can offer any advice....

(does anyone have any recommendations for a good phone system for a call center which must act like it is many different companies? for each 'company' we represent, i must be able to build an english and a spanish call center.

we currently have two nortel business communications manager boxes but i think that a product better suited for our particular functions would improve our performance.

we have two pri's going into each bcm.

we also have a number of issues with the d channels intermittently going down.

thanks in advance for any advice.)

A:(call center phone system)

If you are looking to replace your system the Avaya (Lucent) Definity is excellant. Very pricey though. It will handle any configuration you can think of running. It is the same system used by HSN and the Federal Reserve. I've worked with Nortel, Siemens-Rolm and Fujitsu and the Lucent was the best of them although for cheaper money the Fujitsu 9600 isnt bad.

I have a used number. So I do get the occasional calls asking for someone I don't know, for contests I didn't enter, ect from all over the country. However this most recent one is weird. I got a call from this number: (740) 250-2524 and just missed it. When I called back out of curiosity I got dial up sounds thrown back at me.

I tether with my phone a lot through it's diagnosis system over a USB cable. Computer picks it up as a dial-up modem and all is well.

If I was tethered at the time would it have been dangerous and should I be worried? The number returned no results for me.

This might not be the right section for this but I didn't see anything else that fit better.

A:Weird call the other day- tethered phone security.

Probably just a wrong number. Appears to be a POT line.

Hi,
I had to change from 32 bit to 64 bit today. After about 5 hours I get a phone call from some foreign guy going on about 'Microsoft Software Warranty'. After about 10 minutes I asked what it would cost and said I didn't want it. Thought it was suspicious the whole time and was googling for info while talking.

I assume this is a scam and if so how on earth would they know I just re-formatted?

Some idiots may be on the same ISP as yours, scanned it and got your OS.
Also, there are many web plugins that say what browser, windows and version you are using.

Nothing to worry about, just make sure you have a good antivir program like avira

I got this phone call from a " windows tech" (he said) telling me I was infected. Like a fool I let him take control of my windows laptop computer. He put a program in it to "clean it"? He and wanted money to run it....I would not pay him....after hanging up I ran the program myself (another stupid mistake. This was a windows laptop xp os. I have since gotten rid of it as I was afraid of it...But my question is this. I am on a network, (and so was my laptop) when he got in my computer do you think he could see my private information (password, name, husbands on our apple computers that are on the network also? I have not noticed any major problems with my computer. we have lion os on our apple computers. The only thing I have seen recently(and this incident happened some time ago) I got an email from someone to tell me to quit sending him emails and I got an undeliverable email notice....neither of these people had I sent any emails to. Please advise. Thank you so much...I have worried about this ever since it happened.

I received a call this evening saying I have many errors - events on my computer being sent to windows daily and they needed to help me fix them- the last part of their name was VAP- I never heard of them- has anyone? they had my windows id number=- well the first part of it- they guided me thru commands to show me the rest of my id number and they did read it all to me- they brought me to events page which said I had 24 thousand events!~ yikes! most of them seemed related to Bonjour Service. The guy then transferred me to his supervisor who wanted me to give him control of my computer. I was reluctant to do this and he became angry- I asked why can't u tell me what steps to take and I can do it? he asked Are u a technician? grrrr I told him I didn't feel comfortable to which he replied well hang up then and your computer will break ! I asked him if this was going to cost me money and he said maybe. I took his name and number and said I would get back to him. he kept wanting to know what antivirus I had and who installed it etc>>> I just didn't feel comfortable- has anyone had this happen or know if windows has such a company? I looked up the Bonjour Service and see that is installed on your computer when you download ITunes- I did find steps to remove it but haven't done so because I used iTunes. sigh- can anyone help me- why have I never been notified by my computer about these events?

A:phone call from company representing windows says i have errors?

The caller is nothing but a lying, no-good-for-nothing scammer (I have better terms but Mama told me not to use those words) who has nothing to do with Microsoft or any other legitimate company. You were smart not to give him control of your computer. Unless you gave them access to your computer, there is no way they could no what was going on with your computer and chances are there is nothing wrong with it.

This virus takes control at startup by initiating various command prompt windows and a multitude of odd processes in task manager including, but not limited to, several chrome.exe processes and gplyra.exe. Computer runs very hot. After about 30 seconds a screen pops up completely hijacking the screen which prevents you from accessing the desktop and using task manager. The virus also created its own user account and the only way to turn the laptop off is by holding the power button.

I was unable to run FRST while running windows normally, the only way I could run FRST was while in safe mode. I ran malwarebytes in safe mode previously which detected about 1200 questionable files which I deleted, but upon reboot it promptly came back as if no change were made. How do I remove this virus? Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks!

Hi adidasfate My name is Aura and I'll be assisting you with your malware issue. Since we'll be working together, you can call me Aura or Yoan, which is my real name, it's up to you! Now that we've broke the ice, I'll just ask you a few things during the time we'll be working together to clean your system and get it back to an operational state. As you'll notice, the logs we are asking for here are quite lenghty, so it's normal for me to not reply exactly after you post them. This is because I need some time to analyse them and then act accordingly. However, I'll always reply within 24 hours, 48 hours at most if something unexpected happens; As long as I'm assisting you on BleepingComputer, in this thread, I'll ask you to not seek assistance anywhere else for any issue related to the system we are working on. If you have an issue, question, etc. about your computer, please ask it in this thread and I'll assist you;The same principle applies to any modifications you make to your system, I would like you to ask me before you do any manipulations that aren't in the instructions I posted. This is to ensure that we are operating in sync and I know exactly what's happening on your system; If you aren't sure about an instruction I'm giving you, ask me about it. The popup displays various file names and numerous different phone numbers each time it appears.

In troubleshooting and attempting to remove this popup, I have performed the following:
1.  Malwarebytes scan.
2.  Avast Boot time scan.
3.  Removed a disabled BHO with a name of only a registry key by deleting the key from the registry.

Both Malwarebytes and Avast have found and removed "Pup" type infections, but the popup still comes back.

I have ran the FRST and also did a hijackthis scan, both of which are attached.

The lady asked me to ship it back. I told her that reinstall the windows will cause the loss of all the software I installed - a lot are license associated and expensive. I asked if they can just give me the product key or if they can pay the software I got, I'm fine to ship it back. The lady just hang off my phone.....twice..... I'm very upset with the customer service. Is there a way to get contact with her upper manager and solve this issue? Many thanks!

I have client who received a call from someone pretending to be from Windows.  They informed him that his computer was running slow and they needed to take a look at it.  He doesn't remember how they conned him into giving them access but he did.  They then proceeded to tell him that he had 7,000 virus and malware and they would clean if tor a fee.  He tried to pay them but luckily his credit card company refused to make the payment.  He called me after if finally dawned on him that it was suspicious.

I told him to turn the computer off, and call his credit card company to cancel his credit card and dispute any payment that was made.

I now have the computer to fix.  When I boot up into Windows Vista either in Safe Mode or regular mode I get a screen asking for a password.  This is not a standard user password screen.  I used a password reset program on a bootable CD to reset the windows passwords but that did not help.

I booted into a Windows PE DVD to look for something strange that was starting before windows could start such as an autoexec.bat file but found nothing that was suspicious.

Any one know how to get rid of this mess without "Format C:"

To follow up since I didn't get any replies.  I was able to do a repair by doing a system restore to a previous restore point.  That seemed to completely clean the system.  I followed up with Malwarebytes and Malwarebytes rootkit removal tool and everything came up clean.

I've just received a call from someone claiming to be from the "Windows Support Centre" based in Bradford. He told me that they had received a number of error reports from my PC indicating that I had a virus or Malware on my machine and that if I turned on my PC he would show me what the problem was and how to fix it.

I am running Norton anti virus, he claimed the malware had clearly evaded detection. I said I was sceptical and he gave me an address and telephone number 0800 0488005 and suggested I ring back after I had checked them out.
I have googled "windows support centre bradford" and nothing shows up. Can anyone tell me if this is a genuine call or a scam please?

A:Call from Windows Support Centre

This is a scam. MS does not cold call people.

Was this company by any chance "On support Click" or "Comantra Services" ?

It would be a good idea to contact your local consumer protection agency with as much info as you can provide.

Hi,I had a phone call on Saturday evening from someone purporting to be from a Windows Support company. The person I spoke with said something about my computer having downloaded malicious files without my knowledge. He asked me to open a Run window and type "inf windows" (without the quotes). This opened a windows explorer window showing the folders and files in C:\Windows\Inf. He wanted to know how many files/folders were in there. The then handed the phone over to someone else. This new person asked me to type "prefetch windows" into the Run window. I wasn't prepared to do that because I didn't know what that command did.I asked him for his web site address and he said it was www.windows.systemconsulting.com. I said I would check it out and to call back on Monday.www.windows.systemconsulting.com is a site for Windows Small Business Server 2003.I am very suspicious. When he rings back on Monday should I go along with him until I find out how they are trying to rip me off?Lampet

I received a phone call today which the caller said was from Windows support. He told me that there were thousands of problems with my computer that would result in it crashing any day now. This isn't the first such call I have had.

He asked me to open my computer so that he could check it. As I have a problem with my monitor on which I have asked a question elsewhere I told him that I was unable to get in. He said he would ring back in a week.

I have had error reports rom time to time and I have always reported them. But they usually occur because I am too fast and press the same button twice rather than waiting for the first one to take affect.

Does anyone know if these kind of calls may be from people either trying to access my computer or to sell me something I don't need. Orlikelymto be from the bond file Windows people. How would I check please.

Sorry to sound a bit thick.

Best wishes to all

Anthony

Hello,

Just to brief you about the assignment we are working on.

We are planning to develop a Window app for windows
Phone 8.1  ,which must be able to communicate to a external/Third party control board(ELEVATOR CONTROL BOARD)
using USB serial port communication.

we just wanted to know whether USB serial port communication is possible in the windows
Phone 8.1 .

If the USB serial port communication is possible, we wanted have a sample app code for the same.

To be more specific , Our requirement is very specifically to windows 8.1 smartphone(
NOT FOR STORE APPS)

NOTE:
(The above explained scenario is working well with windows
desktop 8.1 version of the Application Using the Vendor( ST Microcontroller ) Provided Windows Driver. Which is installed
in a windows desktop machine).

Kindly let us know your thoughts on the same.

I am using Windows 8 Release Preview on my desktop. At present the Windows marketplace has a very limited quantity of apps. I also saw the Windows phone marketplace and it has a lot of apps. I read in the news that it has more than 100000 apps presently. I think it a possibility that when the final version of Windows 8 releases we could also have the opportunity of using Windows Phone apps from the Windows marketplace. Since they too are metro so there is some possibility. What you think about that? Is that a possibility?

A:Would Windows 8 (final) support Windows Phone apps?

I hope so but I heard that the phone apps and the metro apps are in different coding language so that might not work out. Someone else might know better. I really wish that windows phone apps will work on windows 8 though for metro since that would mean a much easier transition if their marketplace is already growing.

I recently clean-installed Windows 7 64-bit Home Premium OEM. When I did the phone activation, the automated voice menu asked me to tell it how many computers were installed with this version of Microsoft Office. Should I try to get through to a live Microsoft agent and let them know that they have incorrectly identified my copy of 7 as a copy of Office?

A:Weird Phone Activation Message - System Says Office Instead of Windows

Hello ESL,

Double check using the tutorial below to make sure that you dialed the correct phone activation number for Windows 7. If you did, then yeah wait to talk to an activation operator.

Hi, on an XP machine, I disabled Windows XP Help and Support Center a number of years ago (before SP2 came out) by disabling the Help and Support in services. I cannot seem to re-enable it. I have tried various 'fixes' found on the Inet but none seem to work.

Any ideas? Thanks.

I am very disappointed to know that Windows 8 Media Center would not support Blu-ray. We would need third party software for this. So officially Microsoft is not supporting the Blu-ray format. This is really a disappointment as this shows that Microsoft is somehow moving away from the PCs (desktops/laptops) and going forward with the mobile devices. And the future of desktops and laptops are doomed. As a user of desktop, a few years ago I was looking forward to the Blu-ray era after the DVD era and was hoping that Games, software etc. would would soon be available in the Blu-ray format but it seems that Microsoft has decided to abandon desktops and laptops. Now I wish if there is some alternative OS to Windows!

Windows 8 Media Center does not support Blu-Ray

A:Windows 8 Media Center does not support Blu-Ray! :(

Fees to include blu-ray support in their native player would have been expensive for microsoft, that is why it is not included.

One can download the free media center pack to get native dvd in windows 8.

One can also download free third party player VLC and the associated blu-ray libraries and get support for blu-ray in windows 8.

I thought that I had sasser but it turns out I don't. I have run through a lot of things but I can't find anything else. I want to run System Restore but Help and Support Center won't work. I click on it and it won't do anything. Is there a way I could a) Run it without going through H&S or b) re-install H&S.

A:Windows XP Help & Support Center dead

Just go to System Tools under Accessories in the Start Menu and you should find System Restore under the System Tools menu. I'm not sure but it sounds like you're running Windows XP. If so then this should work fine for you.

Hiya

Help and Support Center provides a centralized facility through which
users can obtain assistance on a variety of topics. For instance, it
provides product documentation, assistance in determining hardware
compatibility, access to Windows Update, online help from Microsoft,
and other assistance.

A security vulnerability is present in the Windows XP version of Help
and Support Center, and results because a file intended only for use
by the system is instead available for use by any web page. The
purpose of the file is to enable anonymous upload of hardware
information, with the user's permission, so that Microsoft can
evaluate which devices users are not currently finding device drivers
for. This information is then used to work with hardware vendors and
device teams to improve the quality and quantity of drivers available
in Windows. By design, after attempting to upload an XML file
containing the hardware information, the system deletes it.

An attacker could exploit the vulnerability by constructing a web
page that, when opened, would call the errant function and supply the
name of an existing file or folder as the argument. The attempt to
upload the file or folder would fail, but the file nevertheless would
be deleted. The page could be hosted on a web site in order to attack
users visiting the site, or could be sent as an HTML mail in order to
attack the recipient when it was opened.

A:Phone call from HP

@lee56

I have brought your issue to the attention of an appropriate team within HP. They will likely request information from you in order to look up your case details or product serial number. Please look for a private message from an identified HP contact. Additionally, keep in mind not to publicly post personal information (serial numbers and case details).

If you are unfamiliar with how the Forum's private message capability works, you can learn about that here.

Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forum.

I received a phone call from HP  here is the number  844-55-2555   They said my computer has stopped receiving updates and someone else has logged into it and taken over.   How do I verify this?  is this a scam/It is true that my computer is not receiving updates.

A:HP phone call

Lizslatt This is a SCAM!  HP does not do any unsolicited calling to notify folks of possible computer problems. It IS true that Win7/8 PCs NOW have problems receiving updates, but this is a global problem, not just with your PC. You can try these steps below --as it got my PC working with Windows Udpate again:  Download these updates before starting the installation process and copy them to a USB flash drive.Disconnect the network cable or disable the WiFi.Install these two updates from the flash drive before connecting to the network and running Windows Update.KB Links:https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3083710https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3172605Have to stop the Windows Update service BEFORE installing each of these: net stop wuauservNOTE: KB3172605 supercedes KB3161608 which supercedes KB3102810Then, after you re-enable Windows Update, it should only take 2-4 hours to find and do the updates, not days.Good Luck

I just got a call on my cell phone from someone saying they are from online tech support. Don't have any way of supporting who they are. They wanted me to down load a program called Team Viewer. I didn't do it cause I don''t know who he was. I just hung up. Since then I went back to another part of his bait and switch when he said to go to ( run and put in eventewr) then went to windows logs and then to application and found a lot of errors that I can't delete. That's when he said to down load teamviewer. And thats when I hung up. The errors are 2828. What is that and should I worry? Should have I done it or did I do right by hanging up? I'm not a total dumb ass.
