Q: Can't connect to Modem settings ip address 12.168.1.254

I keep getting booted off the internet every few minutes. My modem has been re-programed by the ISP and I'm still getting a bad ip address according to the isp help desk. I also can't connect to the router setting through 192.168.1.254.

Preferred Solution: Can't connect to Modem settings ip address 12.168.1.254

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Need some help with a problem that just started. My HP G71 laptop, with Windows 7 Home Premium, will not connect to the internet over the wireless modem I have. Other laptops in the house have no problem in fact, that is how I am typing this right now
I checked the iP address and it starts with 169. The research I have done says that is bad...I am not an expert.

This laptop has been giving me fits lately with malware and I have frequently been running Malwarebytes and other programs to remove. I have tried these things based on a youtube video I watched for this issue.:
1. Went to cmd prompt and tried to release and renew ipconfig. Got this message: "an error occured while releasing interface wireless network connection: The RPC server is unavailable.
2. Went to control panel/network and sharing center/change adapter settings then disabled and enable device
3. Went to properties of device, then uncheck QoS packet scheduler, then went bck in and checked it again
4. Went to services and located DHCP client. It is not listed as being started. When I tried to start it, it said : "Windows
could not start the DHCP client service on local computer. Error 1068: The dependency service or group
failed to start.
5. Tried to restore system to previous point from yesterday...did not work, go an error that said system resotre failed to extract the file C:/Windows\$NtUninstallKB62280$\485945278 from the restore point. the restore point was damaged or deleted.

I can't log into my MODEM. I was able to set it up once using the default gateway IP address about a week ago. Then my kids unplugged it and something changed when plugged back in. When I try to log into my modem using the IP address it just gives me a web page saying its unable to connect. My internet works fine, I am able to ping the address and it replies with no data loss, I can trace route to it, I can release and renew the IP address DHCP server. I am just unable to bring up the webpage to login. I have turned off my firewall (windows firewall). I am just at a loss on what to try next. I want to turn on my Wi-Fi and such, essentially administer my router for my computer. I have did a hard reset, held the button for the recommended 15 seconds with both power on and power off but no change. The modem is a Technicolor TC8717T.

Edit: I ran the Microsoft Internet troubleshooter and I used the IP address instead of the domain name and it said "The remote device or resource won't accept the connection". So it seems something within the router is refusing to let me connect, but still acting in the MODEM role.

Hey everyone.

I've ran into a problem that I can't quite figure out. My internet connection shows 'no internet access' even though my ISP shows the connection is coming into the house just fine. I usually use a router (NetGear-WNR3500U) but I right now I have the Ethernet connection plugged directly into my PC. I tried directly plugging into my laptop and the internet works just fine. So I know the problem resides in the PC.

Some troubleshooting things I have tried.
-Power cycled my modem, router and PC.
-Repinged my connection from my ISP(Comcast Xfinity)
-Used the reset option on the router and the modem
-I was walked through the internet options needed with the tech support from my ISP to make sure DHCP was enabled and every other setting was correct, and he cleared me that all settings were correct.
-Tried ipconfig commands to /renew and /release my IP
When I tried ipconfig /renew I get the error 'An error occurred while renewing interface Local Area Connection : unable to contact your DHCP server'

-Restored my PC to a restore point where the Internet was working

All of these options did not work.

What I think the problem is and I am not sure how to fix it, when I run the ipconfig /all command my Auto configuration IPv4 Address shows 169.254.112.76 which I was told is a router IP address even though I am plugged directly from the modem to my PC with an Ethernet cord. So I think that's my problem? But I am not sure.

A:'No Internet Access' IP address shows router not the modem IP address

That would be your ISPs' address, the router would probably be 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 so, in the properties, advanced button for the ipv4 of your adapter, make sure both settings are on auto, and add the correct router address in the gateway box.

Not really. The ADSL router doesn't have the correct WAN interface. You need a standard router with an Ethernet WAN connection.

My Motorola SBG901 Modem/Router combo has stopped connecting to the internet. I have done all the troubleshooting with Comcast and with Motorola and it is out of warranty, so I will have to purchase a new one.

In the mean time, I wanted to use it only as a wireless router connected to my Scientific Atlanta DPC2100R2 modem. Is there any way to do this? Is there a way to disable the modem in the SBG901?

Simply connecting with the ethernet cords has not worked. I connected the DPC2100 to the SBG901 via ethernet cord. My computer was able to pick up a wireless connection but there is no cable connection. I am using Windows 7.

Thanks!

A:Connect a Wireless Modem to ADSL modem for Wifi

The "nokia siemens SL2_141" is a modem/wireless router combo; I assume that "A Wireless Modem of MTS" is also a modem/wireless router combo.

If my assumption is correct you can use the Nokia as an ethernet switch and wireless access point ...

JohnWill's procedure (Aug. 30, 2008) for configuring a secondary router as a switch and, optionally, wireless access point follows.

Connecting two (or more) SOHO broadband routers together.

Note: The "primary" router can be an actual router, a software gateway like Microsoft Internet Connection Sharing, or a server connection that has the capability to supply more than one IP address using DHCP server capability. No changes are made to the primary "router" configuration.

Configure the IP address of the secondary router(s) to be in the same subnet as the primary router, but out of the range of the DHCP server in the primary router. For instance DHCP server addresses 192.168.0.2 through 192.168.0.100, I'd assign the secondary router 192.168.0.254 as it's IP address, 192.168.0.253 for another router, etc.

Note: Do this first, as you will have to reboot the computer to connect to the router again for the remaining changes.

Disable the DHCP server in the secondary router.

Setup the wireless section just the way you would if it was the primary router, channels, encryption, etc.

Connect from the primary router's LAN port to one of the LAN ports on the secondary router. If ther... Read more

Atheros AR5007EG Click to expand...

this is a problem adapter on vista whenever a change is made

Have a read through the following - the most common fix is the driver update - from the manufacturers website or from the atheros website

------------------------------------------------------------------------
Atheros Wireless Adapter - AR5007EG & AR5007

Over the last couple of years we have been seeing a lot of problems with the above adapters, mainly concerning WPA and WPA2 encryption and mainly on windows Vista.
We have seen just a couple of issues on other windows operating system, windows XP and windows 7.

Windows XP:- A driver update has resolved the issue
Windows 7 :- No conclusive results for a fix

The wireless adapter gets an IP configuration, and shows as connected, but communication is non-existent or sporadic.

Log into the Router and disable the wireless security and see if you are now able to connect to the internet and surf OK.
Please post back a reply here, and let us know if that works or does not work.
If you post back the make and exact model of the router - we can advise how to disable the wireless security

The majority of fixes are via installing a new driver from either the Manufacturers website and if that does not resolve the issue then from the atheros web site - see item (3)

Here are a number of possible solutions

--- 1) In Device Manager right click on the wireless adapter and "update driver."

Hi All,
I have Laptop Toshiba Satellite L775, windows 7. I used cable modem Motorola SURFboard SBG6580 and it was working fine. Then I changed my ISP to Century Link and used their DSL modem and still everything worked just fine. Now I moved to another city and used same cable modem (SBG6580) and connected my business PC thru ethernet and it is working fine. The problem is with my laptop which I tried to connect wirelessly but coudn't so I tried to connect it thru ethernet but it does not even recognizes it. Funny thing is my hard wired computer has picked up same network name thru modem and is working fine both thru ethernet and wifi (this computer I am using first time with this modem).
My laptop find available networks and when I select my network with password, some time it says connected with limited access and some time "windows was unable to connect" message. I tried most of the solutions by calling Suddenlink and Motorola but no luck. I am wordering if it has to do anything with centurylink's DSL modem being used on this laptop before and somehow blocking cable modem?
Any help?

But im worried that all someone would have to do is connect to my modem to get to my computers, they can completely bypass my router, as if it's not there :S

Okay I have a D-Link DSL G604T Wireless ADSL Router (revision B3), I works fine it works both with the LAN and wireless parts, I am connected via a ethernet cable on the computer I am using currently and my mums iBook is connected via the wireless.

But it wont give my computer an IP address, It was working fine but recently it stopped working, I am not sure what I did to stop it from working.

I tried connecting via my wireless adapter D-Link DWL-G510 (revision C) and then I moved the modem/router into my room and used an ethernet cable and plugged it into my onboard ethernet port, it wouldn't assign me an IP for that connection either.

I don't have a MAC address filter running on the modem, there is no wireless security nothing on the modem side that blocks my computer.

I tried using static IP's for both a wireless connection and using the ethernet, it connects to the modem, and I can access the modem but not the internet. It appears that when using static IP's it isnt routing me to the world wide web.

So It must be something to do with my computer. I tried to do a system restore, but that doesn't work It goes through the process of restoring, then when it restarts it comes up with incomplete restore cannot complete process or something. I tried multiple restore dates to restore to and none worked.

I would just re-install windows and be done with it, but I dont have any means of backing up data that I dont want to loose

A:Modem won't assign me an IP address

The router does not assign you an IP. Your computer is supposed to ask for one. Since the iBook is working OK, your router is responding to DHCP requests properly and your coomputer is to blame.

When you set up the static IP configuration, did you fill in all the data correctly? IP, mask, gateway and DNS exactly as on the working client? (The last octet has to be different for the IP address of course.)

Have you removed any malware recently? It could be that the removal program overdid it. Maybe run WinSockFix..

From your PC, post the output of "ipconfig /all" command.

I remember something about the 169.xxx.xxx.xxx ip addresses being an internal address that windows uses when it can't resolve the dhcp server sometimes. I had it once with windows 98 when we where having cable problems.

You may need to add another tcp/ip protocol for you nic, configure it to use dhcp for the cable modem.

I've had a great network for years but then my DI-624 died and I replaced it with a D-Link WBR-2310. It conected to the PC just fine and using DHCP it assigns IP's to the compters. The problem is that the Comcast modem will not give the the WAN an IP or DNS. When I check status the LAN has Host, IP and Gateway. When I check status on the WAN these are blank. Thus, I can't get on the internet using the network. I used the same cables I had with the DI-624 if that makes any difference? So, the network works and the router gives IPs but the WAN has nothing coming in. Help?

Assuming they are two separate units and not bridged.
When you ping, tracert or DDoS attack or what-have-you my IP address, who/what do you reach ?
Im understanding that a modem is just a media converter. It's got no IP address of its own.
But then Wikipedia states (under "cable modem"): "With respect to the OSI model of network design, a cable modem is both Physical Layer (Layer 1) device and a Data Link Layer (Layer 2) forwarder. As an IP addressable network node, cable modems support functionality at other layers...] ...The Network Layer (Layer 3) is implemented as an IP host in that it has its own IP address used by the network operator to maintain the device."
If it's not the modem's ip address, are they referring to TR-69..?
A scan of an ISP subnet (e.g NMAP) returns/reaches routers or modems?

I have also connected my desktop via USB to the cable modem and it works fine but I need to use Ethernet so that I can eventually use a router. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the network card with no luck.

Does anyone have any ideas what could be causing the problem?

Hi,
I can't seem to connect my laptop using my ethernet cable, but I'm able to connect it to the Internet using my wireless connection. Whenever I plug in the cable, my computer tells me that the LAN connection is connected, but I can't open a web page. I tried connecting the cable onto another laptop and it worked, so I don't know what's up with the LAN connection on mine.

I recently installed McAfee Antivirus 6 and was in the process of updating the definition files when my internet connection wouldn't work anymore. I can connect to the net, I'm using the right dial up number and everything, but it seems like nothing is getting through. I uninstalled McAfee but that didn't have any effect, so I'm thinking that some of my modem settings were changed without my knowledge.

I have tried tweaking my modem settings, uninstalling and reinstalling the modem, new drivers, etc. and nothing seems to be working. Any suggestions.

What brand modem do you have? Also, what type of modem (win modem)? I am using a USR win modem and for some reason the application that runs the modem (3cmlnkw.exe) would become corrupted and I would not be able to dial-up. What I had to do was find out what app the modem was using, uninstall the modem software and manualy delete 3cmlnkw.exe. Then I removed the modem and installed it to a different pci slot and reinstalled. Haven't had a problem since. I'm assuming you have already but you can also check the manuf's. website for driver updates and any knowen issues.

Compaq setup is entered by pressing F10 at boot when you see a flashing cursor in the upper right.

Setup is stored on your hard drive - if the drive has been replaced / upgraded it may not be there. In that case you will need to download the setup disks.

Let us know if you need the web site to download from.

V92 as in US Robotics could be presumed here. One rather quick advice would be to
write down the current settings and remove all software pertaining to the device. XP
will automatically install US R drivers upon detection due to it's own driver list. XP has
the needed drivers already. Upon a fresh detection and driver install, you could make use of the reinstallation to configure the preferred setting through control panel.

I have installed a 4 port Cayman router from Bell South on the company LAN. The DSL modem was installed on a Win98SE machine with two network cards. I followed the set up instructions and got the DSL connection on the Win98SE computer working.
Now I have lost my network connection. I look through the TCP/IP settings and find that the DNS is missing. So I add it and reboot. The network is on-line, but I do not have a connection to the internet. So I look at the TCP/IP settings for the network card that the DSL modem is plugged into. I was instructed to remove all DNS address', but one appears. I remove it.
Now go back to my network card for the LAN. The DNS is removed.
Can I have two network cards in a Win98SE machine, one with DNS and the other without DNS?

Hello (I did post this in the Web and Email forum, but havent got any response so I thought I'd try here),
I was wondering what exactly do the following settings all do. I'm using WinXP Home Edition. I'm trying to trouble shoot an error in a program, by changing these settings. But knowing exactly what each does would be a bigger help. Thanks.
Hardware Flow Control
Modem Error Control
Modem Compression
IP Header Compression
Use Default Gateway
Enable Software Compression
Enable LCP Extensions
Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP

and lastly, what does the QOS Packet Scheduler actually do.

I believe the problem has something to do with Winsock, does this have any relation to the settings outlined above?

thanks for your help. It will be most appreciated. For more of the actual error I'm having check out this thread at : http://forums.techguy.org/t97560/s.html

A:Modem Settings

Howdy there...

QOS stands for Quaility Of Service, it's a protocol that's used by some routers, and switches ( I think mainly Cisco ) in a network, what it does is to hold packets during high network traffic, and then send them at a later time, when the traffic isn't so high...

Although I haven't seen this affect a modem as of yet, you certianly don't need it, it can be uninstalled with no problems...

Hardware flow control: this utilizes the 16550 UART controller on the modem ( that is to say, if it is not a Winmodem, it uses software flow control, which puts the data flow control on the CPU, and is much slower )...

Modem error control: this is pretty much what is says, it sets up the error correction method between the modem and ISP...

Modem Compression: this puts the transmited data compresion on the modem, and not the software being used for the connection ( note:if used you must disable software compression, if not it may cause an unstable connection )...

IP Header Compression: it compress the IP header in a packet, this is mainly used if supported by the ISP, for a faster authentication, or logon to your ISP, some ISP's don't support it...

Use Default Gateway: this defines the gateway for the incoming, or outgoing connections, in most cases it's assigned automatically...

Enable Software Compression: if used, and supported by the software, it puts the transmited data compression on the software being used for the connection... Read more

Hello, I am currently trying to figure out how to hook up my Desktop computer to the internet. Recently got back my DSL. The computer is trying to get my IP address from my wireless router, rather than the modem itself. It is also showing 0.0.0.0 I have tried to use system restore to go back to when the computer was working properly, but system restore is not able to restore any points. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm trying to get Ubuntu 8.04 online and to do this I need to know the private IP address of my modem, which is an NEC NTA-3110 ADSL.

The problem is that my network card is detecting a private IP address automatically (169.x.x.x) and this is not quite in the range that I would expect. Normally it is in the 192.168.x.x range. The reason it is doing this is because the router is not offering any private IP addresses.

I've googled extensively. I know this information should be in the documentation or the manual, but the ISP gave me neither. I know I should ask the ISP but they won't have anything to do with Linux. They just tell you to run the Windows set up disk.

If anyone could offer any help on this, I'd appreciate it very much.

Charter up my internet price and told me they would put me on a promo plan if I came in and got one of their modems. I picked up the modem (Cisco DCP3008) yesterday and hooked it up tonight. I had everything connected through my DIR 615 and Charter came up asking me if I was upgrading, etc... needing to verify and so on. I went through that and the last step it said it need to restart the modem to finalize. The modem restarted and came online, however the browser never indicated the processed had finalize. I call Charter, we wired the modem directly to my laptop and got a connection. I thought things were good. I hooked back into the router restarted the modem, all lights came on, started the router and no IP address. I went into setup and clicked clone MAC address and hit save, still no IP address after going to status, dhcp release and dhcp renew.

I reset the router back to factory settings and it still would not pull and IP address. The router worked great before the new modem. Any suggestions to get my router to pull an IP address?

Thank you.

Hi everyone, having a frustrating night getting my ADSL2+ connection going. Just got a Billion 7402G modem/router delivered and I am trying to get it working on an XP PC.

My NIC card works fine, and has the latest drivers. I plug in the modem as described in the manual, and follow all configuration instructions including - Select the Obtain an IP address automatically and the Obtain DNS server address automatically radio buttons.

But I am not being issued an IP address. The manual says this should just be automatic and has no recourse if it is not.

I set an IP address manually within the range of the router, and was able to logon to the modem via the webgui. But no internet access.
Billion support tells me "You should only need to login to router with default settings, navigate to Quick Start page, enter your ISP login details & apply, router should then connect, when finished save config to flash. Nothing else should be required, computer should automatically connect. Ensure that software firewalls aren't blocking access."

OK, so to do this, I need to put in the manual IP address... why is the manual saying to set my LAN connection to obtain IP and DNS setting automatically, and why is this not working for me? Anyway I change the settings to manual and reboot, try the suggestion. All firewalls are disabled.

I have now manually entered an IP address for my PC that allows me to login to the router. Without doing this I cannot even get to this setup pag... Read more

We have a Comcast business class cable modem with a static IP address. There are two devices hardwired to it; a server and a Linksys WRT610N

The server is hardwired to it with port forwarding set for ports 21, 80 and 5900. It works perfectly and can be reached as intended by the outside world but not by our own network.

Our Linksys WRT610N is hardwired to the modem. All computers on the wireless network see each other and can access the internet perfectly.

So all seems well enough.

BUT, no computer on our network can reach our server. Using the domain name or VNC connections from inside our system results in time outs and no connection.

Comcast support says it must be an issue in our router settings but I'm at a loss as to what that would be.

Tech support from them was no help at all. I own an Acer Aspire computer... 500 Mhz with an Acer HCF 56k Data Fax PCI Modem. If Someone has a clue on what to do. I would be truely greatful.

A:I need assistance with modem settings if possible.

Do you have Call Waiting? If you dont disable it when dialing to AOL it will disconnect you. Otherwise there are devices you can buy that will allow you to be connected and still get calls. Here is an example:

I am sure there are many more.

I have cable so I'm pretty ignorant about dial-up modems. The following is from X-teq UI tweak utility:

"WARNING: Using a high maximum speed may adversely affect your modem's performance. While in most cases you can experiment with different speeds, there is a possibility that you could damage your modem. You have been warned!

If you take a look at your modem properties in Control Panel (Open the Modem applet, click on your modem, choose Properties and then click on the General Tab), you'll see that your modem has a maximum speed of 115200bps, or lower.

If you have a UART-compatible 56k modem, then you can increase this speed up to a maximum of 921600bps (900Kbps). The plug-in won't change the speed automatically, it will simply allow you to set it to a faster level using the Modem control panel applet.

De-activating the option should restore your modem's settings to their original state should you have problems."

Does anybody have any comments on this? Are the possible benefits worth the risk?

A:Overclock Modem Settings?

I've never noticed any damage to my 56k modem from setting the port speed to its highest setting. I suggest you just experiment and see what you can get the fastest speed at. Obviously its all upto you, and I guess the reason they gave a warning is so they can't be blamed for any damage. But to me I'd say the chances are quite low. But it's all up to you.
Also you may not notice a huge increase in speed and it may not be worth changing. Sometimes it can slow it down. All I can suggest is experimenting.

Hi I've just bought a Belkin N series wireless modem & I'm unable to access the settings to put a password on it.

When I run the setup assistant on the CD it says;

"Step 1 of 6: Checking settings in computer and Router The Setup Assistant is not able to connect to the Router via any of the network adapters in this computer. Please go back to the Quick Installation Guide and make sure all physical connections are correct. Also, please power cycle the Router and make sure that the Router has power and that the appropriate lights are on (see guide)."

But I'm actually connected to it and using the net through the modem at the moment.

I've already tried the reset button on the back to no avail. I've used ipconfig to find the ip but it times out when I enter it in the browser. I've also tried an ethernet through the modem to the laptop but it still won't recognise it.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.
