THANK YOU - Windows Update Failure FINALLY FIXED

Q: THANK YOU - Windows Update Failure FINALLY FIXED

I have dealt with an issue of windows being unable to perform updates, or being unable to update other software such as Adobe Reader, and Office was crashing.

This came about with an update back in May 2016.  I had turned off the computer while it was attempting to shut down.  For the past five months I've spent countless hours (more than I care to admit) and tried EVERYTHING that I came across online, and I do mean everything.

I was getting an error code of 80080005 and zero updates were shown in the windows update history.  The computer properties showed that Windows wasn't activated or valid and displayed no product ID.  The Office suite (Word, Excel, etc.) also showed no activation and would only allow work to be performed for a few minutes before locking up.  Each time the computer was shut down it would hang when attempting to shutdown after this message "Preparing to configure Windows... Do not turn off your computer" and I would have to do a hard shutdown.

It was driving me mad, insane I tell you, but I kept researching for a solution, not wanting to do a fresh install.

I finally found a solution here on this site, and whomever created this tool is a God.

THANK YOU
THANK YOU
THANK YOU

I can finally delete about 100 bookmarks related to the issue and supposed fixes.

The only solution that worked, yesterday, was this:

Windows Repair (All In One) 3.9.11 Download

I have to go, because Windows wants to restart from performing more updates.....FINALLY.

THANK YOU
THANK YOU
THANK YOU

To clarify, I followed the instructions within the tool exactly as described.

I consider myself a power user, and work with computers everyday, but this one stumped me, a first.

Preferred Solution: THANK YOU - Windows Update Failure FINALLY FIXED

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Microsoft has finally fixed the freezing issue in the Windows 10 Anniversary Update

Last month, we reported that many users were experiencing freezing issues on their PCs after the Windows 10 Anniversary Update. Microsoft later confirmed the issue, stating that it was impacting a "small number" of users, and posted workarounds until a fix could be made available.

The problem usually involved a system freeze after logging in, which rendered the device unresponsive. Microsoft stated that this occurred due to the apps and operating system being installed on separate drives. Now, after nearly one month, the company has announced that it has finally resolved the issue.

While the update on its original Microsoft Answers forum thread isn't quite as extensive, the company has clarified that the Windows Update which was released on August 31 contains a fix for the freezing issue. Microsoft also stated that users who uninstalled the Anniversary Update because of the problem can now revert to it using Windows Update Assistant, or by going to the Windows 10 download page and clicking on "Update Now".

With that being said, the company also mentioned that if you're still experiencing freezing issues even after installing the update, you should try the following methods:

Option 1: If you have a second administrator account on the PC that you can sign into, please do so and install the latest Windows 10 update, released on August 31st, 2016. After installin... Read more

Well after trying a zillion fixes for the Network issue on my Windows 10 Pro Anniversary system which none of them worked
I finally formatted the drive and done a clean USB install of Windows 10 Pro Anniversary, And now I can see my computer under the "Network" and I can see all others that are connected! I can also access the other 2 computers (laptop with Windows 10 Home and old XP Pro server) and transfer files.
So it is plain to see that when I done a USB upgrade of the Anniversary update to overwrite that it corrupted the Network files.
Also the laptop was upgraded the same way instead of waiting for the update to come through windows update and I am still getting the same errors when I try to connect to the other computers from the laptop.
So it looks like I am going to do a clean install on the laptop to fix the network issues there.
If I get time over the next few days I will do that and post back here with results.

cheers

Using all available win10 previews and now the official public release I have had 100mbps speeds on my LAN.
til yesterday when I set jumbo frames to ON and 9k size. I didn't try any other I just used the largest.
BAM.. My full normal gigabit speeds are back.
once again I find myself dumb founded as to what Microsoft has done to a 100% working network architecture to break it so badly that shares, speed, and availability are now nearly broke.

NEVER have I ever had to use jumbo frames on any PC or OS. in fact doing so previously has made zero difference in throughput.

i love windows 10 for what they did but it's actually worse than windows 8 on many levels. I won't go back to Win7 yet, if at all, I am just baffled why they did what they did for the home and pro versions. Sure make enterprise have a newish type of network architecture because businesses are going to do a complete review due up all of their PCs way home user is going to do one they're going to use Windows 10 be immediately turned off because the networking doesn't work very well if it all

A:Finally fixed my network speed issue.

Still strange, though, as my adapter has Jumbo Frames disabled and it runs 1Gig no sweat.

A few weeks ago I experienced the infamous Black Screen of Death (KSOD) on my computer running 64bit Vista Business. You know the one where the computer stalls out during boot up at a black screen with a white cursor and it won't respond to anything. I finallly fixed it today.

After much research, I'm starting to think this is boils down to ACL problems that prevent key Windows services from starting. For example, my (KSOD) occurred after chkdsk went haywire and "replaced invalid security id with default security" on every file on the hard drive. That made me suspect the services could not start because of bad ACLs on their associated files. Some KSODs may be caused by bad permissions in the registry as described in some posts, but the result is the same.

My fix was to reinstall Vista which puts the previous system folders in the Windows.old folder. Reinstalling Vista warn you that you cannot use the previous version of Vista. Fortunately that is not always true. Sometimes you can go home again.

Under the new installation I was initially denied access to the other folders on the C: drive and had reset the ACL and/or ownership on each folder by opening it with administrator permission.

Now here is the trick to get the old system back again. I booted the computer with a BartPE cd based on Windows XP that I had created in a previous life. I then used the file manager to access the hard drive whereupon I created a windows.new folder. I proceeded to move (not c... Read more

Like innumerable other Win10 users, I have been trying for quite a while to get broken apps and Cortana to work again, after the Anniversary 'update'. I've repeatedly tried sfc /scannow; DISM restorehealth; MS Repair tools; Windows troubleshooter; the infamous Powershell "Get-AppXPackage | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml", ad nauseum, with no luck at all.

Today, while Googling a somewhat different topic, I stumbled across a shareware program that actually FIXED Cortana, and ALL metro apps. It's called Windows Repair Free/Pro, from Tweaking.com. The free version is fully functional for repairing Windows problems; just follow all the directions exactly. The $20 Pro version just adds some performance and visual tweak options.

You have to run the repair tools twice; it took about 4-1/2 hours, total, on my system. On the first pass, when the repair tool was re-installing metro apps, several of the same errors appeared in the cmd box as with the above mentioned Powershell command line. After the required reboot into Safe Mode w/networking, the second pass returned no errors at all, and everything is working again.

If only I had found this program five or six weeks ago! I could have saved countless frustrating hours of beating my head against the scre... Read more

My first post here ..
Well guys ,I have run into this problem a couple of times after removing viruses from computers...
Was it virus related ?I couldn't say for sure but the indications are there..

I think I may have found the long awaited solution to the autorun problem
that affects both xp and vista boxes --WITHOUT reinstalling..

Autoplay -some love it ,some hate it .
Sometimes it doesn't work when the customer wants it to.
I personally like it disabled ,but that's not the point..

Simple right ?
Just right click the drive in my computer and reenable/disable ,or download and use tweak UI,or uninstall and reinstall said hardware in device manager
or use group policy editor to enable/disable autorun

NOPE
None of this worked on my problem pcs,and I had felt like I had been beaten by a stupid ,simple problem.

Since the hardware was completely functional,my theory was that it might be a registry entry corrupted by the virus to prevent drive access .Finally I found what I believe to be the culprits, virus related or not..

Try this at your own risk ,but here is what I discovered to be the solution for me when all other avenues failed..
SOLUTION

1-start
2-run
3-regedit
4-navigate to and delete these 4 Dword entries (if present):

then

I am using Windows 7 Professional with Service Pack 1.
Windows Update has lost my update history and hangs when I tell it to check for updates. Windows Update Troubleshooter reports "Windows Update error 0x80070057(2016-07-15-T-12_59_34P) Not Fixed". How can I get Windows Update working again?

Here is a detailed account of the problem:
Earlier today, I ran Windows Update and told it to install 15 important updates. It said it was downloading them, but stalled for 30 minutes at 0% done.
I rebooted my computer and re-ran Windows Update. It reported that there were no pending important updates. I clicked "View update history" and saw that the most recent 15 important updates had failed. I clicked "Check for Updates" and,
when it finished checking, Windows Update continued to report that there were no pending important updates.
At that point, I concluded that something was wrong with Windows Update. In an attempt to fix it, I downloaded and ran the Windows Update Troubleshooter (WindowsUpdateDiagnostic.diagcab). It reported one problem found: "Windows Update error 0x80070057(2016-07-15-T-12_59_34P)
Not Fixed".
After running Windows Update Troubleshooter, I re-ran Windows Update. It reported that my most recent check for updates was "Never", and that updates were installed "Never". When I clicked "View update history" I saw an empty

After trying several variants of various atttempted solutions posted here...I hit upon one today that actually worked.  It may never work again...but, hopefully, I won't have this situation again.

My Win Update setting has been stuck on "Never" for weeks.  I had run every tool...SURT, reset updates, installed new Agent...ad nauseam.  The setting remained at "Never" and Windows Update would do it's endless check as long as I would permit it...with no results, of course.

Today I decide to take a different route.

I went to Services and changed actually stopped the Windows Update service.  Previously, it would never reflect "Stopped" but instead displayed "Stopping".  Today it reflected  a "stopped" status for the first time in weeks.  Not content with that, I decided to disable the WU service by changing the Service Status to "Disabled".

I then navigated to the Microsoft Update Catalog...did a search for "October rollups" and was greeted with screen displaying 21 items.  I selected two of the 21 and eventually wound up with two items being downloaded to my desktop.  One indicates that it's a rollup for 64-bit, while the other doesn't indicate either 32-bit or 64-bit...but they have the same KB number,   3185330.  2016 Security Monthly Quality Rollup for Windows 7.

Remember...I had the Windows Update service disabled still.  I tried to run the 64-bit rollup...could not run because ... Read more

Microsoft Finally Fixes Error 633 in Windows 10 Creators Update

Microsoft rolled out Windows 10 cumulative update KB4022716 earlier this week, and one of the most important changes that it brings is a bugfix for error 633.

If you?ve never experienced this error, the chances are that you have no idea what it does, though there are thousands or maybe more users out there who have been trying to deal with this since the release of the Windows 10 Creators Update.

In just a few words, this error impacts modems and dial-up connections, causing them not to work correctly, even though everything was just fine before the update to the Creators Update. We?ve also experienced the same bug on at least two Windows 10 laptops here at Softpedia, and finding a workaround was a really difficult job, especially because the typical fixes made no difference.

So if you are also experiencing the same problem and want to have it fixed to continue using a dial-up connection in Windows 10 Creators Update, just download and install Windows 10 cumulative update KB4022716 and everything should return to normal.

The easiest workaround
The only workaround that we tried and which got the modem working on our PCs involved launching the Windows 10 Registry Editor (by typing regedit in the Start menu) and navigating to the following path:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\RasMan

Look for a key called RequiredPrivileges and double-click to open it. At the end of the tex... Read more

Hi All,

This is my first VS2008 installation and I bumped to this error. Wasting much time googling the net showed bunch of lame solutions like "reboot pc, reinstall windows and etc..." I thought it is W7's incompatibility, however the problem is easily solved by adding additional component during install/reinstall... just check "Visual C++ Tools" (no need to select "Lookup", "Spy++" and "Win32 Tools", you can deselect them, if not needed)

So, this is to inform that VS2008 in the following selection is working fine (SP1 was applied separately):
Visual Studio 2008
VC# (+mobile)
VC++ (+mobile +visual cpp tools)
Visual Web Authoring

Everything is compiling now =)

Hello

First of all, I thank you for your attention.

I cannot perform any "Windows update" issue since the 23/08/2016.

Each time I reach the "Windows Update" screen, I get the following error message :

In french : "Redémarrer l'ordinateur pour installer d'importantes mises à jour"

In english: "Restart the computer to install importante updates"

Then, after rebooting, nothing change.

After further investigations, I get the following error message:

In French : "windows update ne peut pas actuellement rechercher des mises à jour car vous devez tout d'abord redémarrer votre ordinateur afin de terminer l'installation précédente."

In English : "windows update cannot research update because you must first restart your computer in order to finish the previous installation".

Then, I've recreated a new catalog by executing these commands:

net stop wuauserv

ren %windir%\SoftwareDistribution SoftDist.old

net start wuauserv

Now all services are running but I still cannot perform updates.

Like many users I suffered these issues: high CPU and RAM usage by svchost.exe, hours of checking windows updates and being stuck while downloading them.
After weeks of trying solutions I've found this one that worked.

Here's what I did:
- stopped WinUpdate service and installed KB3138612 OFFLINE
- rebooted
- stopped WinUpade again and installed KB3145739 and KB3153199, both OFFLINE
- rebooted

Then I checked for new updates and it took just about 10 mins.
Downloading new updates went right away and no more high CPU and RAM usage by svchost.
It's been 5 days now and so far problems are gone.

Hopefully this might help.

About 2-3 days ago, I downloaded the windows 7 64 bit updates. After the re-boot, some of my programs I use kept asking "do you want to change your system", or something like that. I never got that before because I loaded these programs myself.
Today, 12/12, I received one new update to MS windows 7 that took about 10 minutes to download and install. I re-booted, and now everything is fine. I think MS forgot, or coded the update wrong.
Does anyone know what happened, or did anyone experience this same problem? I have a Dell XPS.
Thanks

A:[SOLVED! Windows Update BUG!] Windows Update Failure [7SP1 x64] KB4074598 [HRESULT = 0x80004005 - E_FAIL]

Solved, 2 months later! After 3 dist upgrades!
So I finally solved this Windows / Update BUG, it and it was as simple as this; set peerdissvc (under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\) (aka branchcache as it is known under services.msc) from disabled back to manual, along with its
dependency http, to manual. I'm quite sure setting branchcache to manual was all that was necessary for the fix to take place; I also had set "not configured" to alll changes I had made to "Background Intelligence Transfer Service" under
group policy regarding peer caching. I had tried the latter before the last 3 distupgrades and it did not make any difference; so it seems windows update fails if you disable branchcache, which is typically only used by businesses anyway, so many people recommend
to disable it, for security reasons also. What a headache; I spent at least a 80 hours, and weeks, and months trying to figure this one out; Windows update has turned into a bunch of bull***** with their ROLLUPS; one error on one of 130 little updates and
the whole shebang goes down with the ship; dumbest idea ever for their update platform; they should change to individual updates and do it quick.

This is a MICROSOFT WINDOWS UPDATE BUG. You shouldn't have to enable or disable any built in windows service to get a "windows" update working. What a headache.
SO for all of you 80004005 victims out there; check your C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\cbs.log; searc... Read more

Hi there.
I decided that as I had a small external surplus laptop 2.5 inch 320 GB USB drive - itself not much bigger than a USB stick (and only 2 X as expensive as a 32 GB stick) I gave it a whirl of installing the Windows to Go on this drive.

I did EXACTLY the same instructions as for a USB stick so in theory this should also work for Internal HDD's if you are doing this from a desktop and want totally separate installations.
Note that this creates ONE LARGE partition so after you've installed Windows -- use a partition manager to change the sizes.
Ensure Internet IS connected and do the updates.

The updates will download but the ist time you'll get a fail when it tries to install them.

just RETRY and it will install the downloaded updates.
I'm busy now with updating about 700 MB's worth of updates for OFFICE.
Got Photoshop CS5, Acronis, Partition manager,Winamp, VLC and even vmware work station to work. Plenty of space and much faster than an actual USB STICK but still tiny enough to be genuinely portable.

It's really a proper PORTABLE system.

Note I used a proper USB ===>SATA cable to connect the external disk to the usb slot on the computer. Fortunately one of these came with an SSD I purchased previously (Samsung) and had wondered what to do with it --lucky I never threw it away. !!

I've booted the system up on 4 different machines with no problems at all.

I'm sure that nce MS has got the bugs out of this feature it will be GREAT.

I'm having some difficulty trying to replace my hard drive for my Sony Vaio TZ series. My hard drive was MK1011GAH and the one I purchased was MK1234GAL.

I purchased a replacement from Ebay and I made sure it was a same type of hard drive. I booted it up after I successfully installed my hard drive. However, I got an error message saying Error 200 : failure fixed disk. I did some research and the common answer were the hard drive was either bad or dying. I sent a message to the seller but all he said was the disk wasn't compatible with my Vaio even though there was a list saying my "old" MK1011GAH would be compatible with the one that I purchased.

Long story short, it is possible to get this error if my pc and hard drive is incompatible? At least CMOS detects the hard drive so I am assuming is not about cable being loose. (I already checked many times)

thank you in advance

A:Getting a Error 200 : failure fixed disk

I would put the possibility that the Seller sold you a defective HD high on the list of explanations for your current situation. Was the HD sold as "new"? Was there a warranty? Post link to Seller's page so we can read the fine-print. Did you pay with PayPal (please say yes)?

In general terms, HD's come in two sizes, big ones (3.5 inch) and little ones (2.5 inch), and in two types, SATA and IDE (also known as "PATA"). HD's are not manufacturer/model specific like other hardware might be. They are more universal in nature and for the most part a 2.5" SATA will work in any computer that needs a 2.5" SATA. In your case, your hard drive was a 2.5" PATA, and you probably could have replaced it with any 2.5" PATA. Note there are some exceptions to this (1.7" HD's, SCSI HD's, etc...) but they are the exception to the rule. You should check the manufacturer's specs on the support page for the specific model to see if there are any capacity limitations, etc.. (some older computers cannot recognize hard drives larger than "X" Gbytes), but at 100 Gbyte you are at the low-end of the pond and it's unlikely that a computer that can read a 100 Gbyte HD (the old one) cannot read a 120 Gbyte (the "new" eBay one you replaced it with).

Frankly, you should have purchased a new HD and gotten the increased likelihood that it was good when it arrived, as well as both the Vendor and Manufacturer's warranty. You also pr... Read more

Hey everyone. I have an IBM Thinkpad R32, and since about March 2008 I would on the odd occasion get a BsOD. Following that when the laptop tried to restart back into Windows, I would get a 'Error 0200: Failure Fixed Disk 0' message and I needed to leave the laptop off for a couple of minutes.

Three days ago the same thing happened again, however this time no matter how long I left the laptop off (with the exception of two times, however a BsOD would follow just after the Windows XP load up screen), the 'Error 0200: Failure Fixed Disk 0' message would once again appear. I was sure my hard drive was dead.

Fortunately, most of my files are either on my Home PC or iPod so I decided to format using the IBM Recovery Program.

Ever since the format, the laptop is working fine. I would have thought for sure, format or no format, I'd still get the message due to the hard drive being dead, or alternatively the IDE controller in the motherboard being faulty?

Are the messages going to reappear anytime soon? Is my hard drive still the cause? And if so, why is it working now?

Thanks.

I wouldn't trust that drive with anything important. But if you want to make certain, test it.

very likely a hard drive failure but possibly a poor or faulty connection to the hard drive, and/or faulty motherboard controller

what does f2 do? reinstall from partition,, if yes then worth a go before you go to lappy hospital

enter the bios usually press detete on start up. see if the drive is recognised, if so it may be ok but motherboard gone

can you ectract the disc and install/test in another machine?

Hi

It would seem that your hard drive might be faulty (again?)
Although since this is your second hard drive I would imagine that there is a problem with your laptop which is damaging the hard drives or a problem with the hard drive controller.

To test your hard drive you can download SeaTools from Seagate (I think you have a seagate hard drive, thats if you bought a similar hard drive. If not please let me know)
You can download the iso here http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.js...00dd04090aRCRD
Just burn this to a cd. Boot your PC from the CD and run the test.

The big problem is that if there is something wrong with the hard drive controller the test might fail even though the hard drive is fine. For a work around you would have to open the laptop, take the hard drive out and connect it to another pc. Then you can run the test on that pc.

If it is the hard drive controller or even a power problem on your laptop there is not much you could do to repair it short of sending it in to Acer or buying a new laptop.

I don't know if a BIOS update could solve the problem or if faulty memory could cause this. Maybe someone else could shed light on that.

Hi all!

Ive been struggling for a few weeks now getting the SP1 update installed on my machine, but im now finally up and running and wanted to share what worked for in the hope it may help some others.

Ok so started off getting probably half a dozen different error codes when varying the install method, using a number of guides over the internet. The cbs file was looked at numerous times but yet I still couldnt nail the problem. So sod it i tried the Repair install, which took forever.... And you guessed it, SP1 STILL wouldnt install. I will list the reapir install link just incase somewhere deep in the glorious windows files it did infact help fix the problem in the long run but im not convinced.

Anyways...

1. Do a Repair Install, guide here. Repair Install
2. Download the STANDALONE SP1 file from Microsoft (windows6.1-KB976932-X64.exe for 64-Bit) Save to desktop.
3. Goto Control Panel > Programs
4. Turn Windows Features On/Off
5. Remove tick from Internet Explorer 9/8, Click OK. May need restart here.
6. Head back to control panel, Programs and Features
7. Uninstall ANYTHING listed as Microsoft.NET Framework
8. Click Start, type msconfig in search bar.
9. Select the Boot menu and check Safe Mode, minimal is fine.
10. Click Apply, OK, then restart the PC.
11. Now in safe mode, uncheck the safe mode boot option in msconfig
12. Apply and OK again, BUT NO RESTART
13. Run the STANDALONE SP1 file you downloaded earlier let it do its stuff.

Now hopefully after a couple ... Read more
