I am using word as my email editor, it has its quirks...which is better - using word or Outlook at the email editor? Ideas? Opinions?

With the new Microsoft Word 2016 if you insert an equation through the Equation button within the Insert menu you get this new-looking editor.


Equations created in such a way can be viewed in inline, professional or linear mode and offer advanced options.

But if you use a keyboard shortcut (Alt+= or any user defined one) instead you end up getting this old-fashioned editor:


And if you edit equations from documents made by other people sometimes they are opened with the new editor, sometimes with the old one.

Can anyone explain the difference between them and how to force Word to always use the new one, please?, I would like to get it with a keyboard shortcut.
And also how to convert an equation made with the old editor onto the new format?

Hi,

Wanted to know what is the difference between these two methods of taking outlook backup:

Exporting outlook by clicking file --> Imort and Export Wizard --> Export to a file --> .......

​and

Simply copying the .pst file from C:\Documents and Settings\...\Outlook folder

I was thinking exporting outlook takes ALLOT of time so I should just copy the pst file from the outlook folder and import it later when required. Am I missing something when I take backup this way?

What is the best registry editor, if there is one? I have been using Uniblue and ran it and corrected my registry. I then downloaded a trial copy of Registry Cure and ran it, It says I have over 600 errors in my registry. Anyway my subscription to Uniblue has expired, what should I get.

Hi Phil. . .

I would advise that you do not use any of these products. They are an absolute waste of money and they could end up corrupting your registry. Then you'll be back to see me when the BSOD epidemic begins.

The items it is flagging as "errors" are not errors at all - just entires in the registry that currently have no association to them. They hurt nothing, take up very little space and cause non-measurable time loss during boot-up when the registry is assembled from files found on your hard drive. We are talking about a fraction of a second.

600 items out of the Vista NT Registry which can easily contain 500,000 + entries represents just 0.12% of total.

To give you an example of how some of these "errors" occur - assume that you no longer have use for Microsoft Word and un-install it. A registry scanner/cleaner would then pick up anything associated with MS Word and its files, whose file extensions are .doc (≤ Word 2003) or .docx (Word 2007) files. The un-installed Word file extension relations found in the registry would still exist, but have no program to open should a doc/x file be clicked on.

I suggest that you leave the registry alone. There may be a time in the future after the installation/un-installation of hundreds of programs where this becomes necessary, but then should only be done so under the instructions of someone familiar with registry cleaners. I have a user who has W2k Pro and Office 2002. Every time she opens outlook, word opens over it. Although word opens, there are no options. It is just blank grey screen. Once she closes out the Word window she can then proceed with her email. I have tried to run the detect and repair feature with no response. Any help will be appreciated.

It's possible she has outlook set to use word as her default email editor, that allows you to do things like autocomplete and a few other functions, i know thatll open up word in th background, but only as a process not the actual app.

Outlook Express is free. Basic e-mail and contacts.

Hey Guys. I am running windows XP Home edition on a Dell Dimension 8300. What note keeping, letter writing, spread sheet ect. program would you suggest I use. Hello Everyone

The following issues are ruining my life. I've looked for and found similar posts, but the suggested solutions either don't "fit" my issue exactly, and / or they are too complicated for me. Please help if you can. I am not a programmer / techie etc. Simple language will be appreciated. My system specs can be found hereinunder:

When I attempt to open MS Word 2010, I get the following Error Message:

"Word could not create the work file. Check the temp environment variable."

Clicking "Ok" only brings temporary relief because after a few operations eg: Copy, paste, etc., the program hangs.

Outlook behaves a little worse. Attempts at opening give ff message:

Outlook could not create the work file. Check the temp environment variable.

Clicking "Ok" seems to solve the problem but any attempt to click on and read any mail brings back the above message. Clicking "ok" at this repeated dialogue box, refuses to make the email available for reading. Instead the HourGlass appears and the program hangs. If not, then part of the email eventually becomes legible but contains loads of the following error messages within the body:

"Error! Cannot read or display file."

It's rare that I will be able to open more than one email without the system hanging. The entire Opening-Hanging-and-Relaunching takes "an eternity".

In Internet Explorer, Go to "Tools" then "Internet Options".
Under "General Tab" go to the "Browsing History" Section and click on "Settings".
In the "Temporary Internet Files & History Settings" Dialogue Box click on "Move Folder".
In the "Browse for Folder" Dialogue Box browse to the following folder and select it: C:\Users\Name\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows
Click "Ok".
Windows will install the "Temporary Internet Files" Folder at above location. This is where your temp files will be stored in future.

You might need to log out. Follow Instructions and log back in.

The above Solution applies to Win 7. For other platforms you might need to tweak the above solution.

Using Outlook 2003, when I try to open a .pdf file in Outlook, it automatically opens Word in order to try and open the file (which doesn't work as you might expect). I've checked through the Control Panel for associated file types, which are correct. I can open a .pdf through Explorer with no problem. I've tried the office repair function and nothing works.

What I really need to know is how to change file type associations within Outlook 2003.

Please help!!!

Outlook uses the same file associations as the rest of the system and there are no separate ones for Outlook. There may be an incorrect DDE entry in the file association. Try deleting the file association altogether in the Control Panel and then recreating it simply to open with your PDF reader, whatever that is. Or, delete it and then right-click a PDF file and choose Open With to create a new association by choosing your PDF reader as the default program.

Or try one of these tools to try to track the problem down.

Hi,
I have a problem when opening attached word documents in Outlook (specs below). Every time I open any word document attached to an email, it always opens it in "Reading Layout" format rather than the "Normal" or "Print Layout" format which I would prefer. This means every time I have to click on view and change the layout which is a pain.
How do I change the setting which would make it open in "Print Layout" as the default?

Good Morning,

I have an annoying issue with several of my client computers in our Domain.

We use Exchange 2003 + Office 2003 + Windows XP (PRO)

But word is crashing regularly we use it as an email editor for Outlook this is needed for making text bold etc....

After crashing word tries to auto recover all open files and starts with the auto recovery mode.\\

what I have done:
- Have renamed/deleted normal.dot
- cleaned out the autorecovery folder
- repaired office
- reinstalled office
- disabled outlook (Adobe Pro) plugins in: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\Outlook\Addins\
- disabled outlook antivirus plugin (Panda Antivirus)

all has no succes.

I had all Microsoft Updates installed.

Who can help, I am getting crazy!

I've written a vbscript which takes some information from active directory and generates an email signature in outlook.

It works by making the signauture in word and then creating it in outlook.

I am creating an email signature by extracting details from active directory

The problem I am having is when I create the sig in word and specify the font as arial it goes to calibra (body) in outlook.

I have arial as my default font in word, if I change it to not be the default then it works in outlook, so I think outlook is just seeing arial as default and then using its own default, which is calibra.

So, can I change the default font in outlook to arial or is there another fix?

I am using Windows 8, Word 2007 and Outlook 2007.
I have 65 contacts stored in Outlook 2007 which I can access without problem.
When I attempt mail merge in Word 2007 it does not work, steps taken are as follows:-
Click Mailings, Click Select Recipients,
Choose Profile Name 'Outlook' is the only option Click OK
Select Contact Folder to Import 'Contacts' Click OK
I then get an error message 'did not find object'
Word seems to be looking in the wrong file for the contacts stored in Outlook 2007. How can I sort this problem please.

New user to MS office 2010 and Windows 7.

When in Word and wanting to email the doc I go to File/Save&Send/Send as Attachment. When I do this, a copy of the email is not saved in my Sent Items folder in Outlook.

I've confirmed with another person in my department that when she does the same thing, her emails sent this way are saved in the Sent Items file.

From this I believe that there must be a setting for this somewhere, but I cannot find it. Any suggestions?

I'm running XP and MS Office 2003. Whenever I close Outlook it causes Word to display.. "Word has a problem and must close". Then Word starts and when I "X" out of it, it displays "Word automatically saved changes to the normal document template. Do you want to load it?" Clicking no Word starts and looks normal (although it takes about 30 seconds to start) when I "x" out a window appears which says “MS Office Word has encountered a problem and needs to close". After clicking OK Word appears again and when I click "X" it goes through the same routine again and this time it may close after bringing up the same error and must close it again...

I have run repair to no avail. When I run Word in safe mode it runs OK. Question is how do I find out which add-on is at fault? I would remove and reinstall it but I don't think that would change anything. I must find out which add-on is causing the trouble.
I should also add that when I call up Word it takes about 20-30 seconds to start.

Any suggestions?

Problem Solved... The following from About.com resolved my problems...

Oftentimes, problems starting Word can be traced back to a corrupt Normal.dot file. If you&#8217;re having problems starting Word, you should check that the problem is not with the Normal.dot template before you reinstall the software.

First, locate the Normal.dot template using My Computer or Windows Explorer. The location will vary from computer to computer, depending on options you specified during the original installation and which version of Windows you are using. However, the file path is most likely C:\Documents and settings\Application data\Microsoft\Templates. Once you have located the file, rename it by using the shortcut menu.

Restart Word from the Start menu or from your desktop icon, if you have one. Word will automatically create a new Normal.dot template; if Word starts without any problems, you can deduce that the problem was a corrupt Normal.dot template.

If the problem persists, it is time to take a look at the Windows Registry entry for Word.

Note: If you have made a lot of customizations to Word, you do not want to delete the old Normal.dot template. You can use the Organizer to copy the customizations you made to your new Normal.dot file.

If I un-check signature option, Word is opening as editor. Else, automatically "use word as editor" option gets unchecks.. anybody can solve this?

I posted this on the other sofware sight but I think I posted it in the wrong place and am posting it here. Sorry if this is the wrong place.
I am running window xp on my home computer and for some reason it quit renembering my pass word for outlook express I have set it and applyed it just as I have done on all other computers and even this one in the past but it just want remember it. When I log on to email I have to type in my pass word evertime. It has all the latest updates and I have checked everthing I can think of. I have never had this problen with this computer before it just started. My computer has 1 giz of memory and 80% free space on the C drive. Any help would be appriated.

We upgraded to Office 2003 (from 2000), and I'm having trouble printing envelopes in Word.

I select Tools>Letters and Mailings>Envelopes and labels

When I click on the address book I get this message:
Either there is no default mail client or the current mail client cannot fufill the messaging request. Please run Microsoft Office Outlook and set it as the default mail client.

I click OK, and then I get the following message:
Logon failed. You must log on to Microsoft Exchange to access your address book. Error code: "unspecified error."

Outlook is set as the default mail client, but I'm not familiar with Microsoft Exchange. I'm hoping I just need to change some settings.

Help!!
Recently a friend installed Adobe Photodeluxe 2.0 on my Compaq notebook. Since then I keep getting an alert when I close Microsoft Word or Outlook asking me if I want to save changes to EZPHOTO.DOT...YES or NO. I would click NO, but everytime I would close Word or Outlook, the alert would appear again. Finally, I checked the YES box to see what would happen and it then asks me..."The template EZPHOTO.DOT and its macros will be converted to the latest Word format when the template is saved. Do you want to save the converted template to a new file, or overwrite EZPHOTO.DOT? Choices being, NEW FILE - OVERWRITE - CANCEL".

Also, on the MS Word tool bar, EZP is listed 13 times!

Since I am NOT a experienced computer user, I wonder why is this doing this and how do I stop these alerts and get these EZP`s off the Word tool bar? Please advise. Thanks!

SYSTEM CONFIGURATION:

I am using microsoft outlook version 12.0 on an windows xp laptop.

QUESTION:

I am able to see two folders in my outlook. one is called "Sent" and other is "Sent Items". Once i send the mail to somebody, some of the mails go and sit into "Sent" folder and a few of the mails go and sit into "Sent Items" folder

I tried to identify a pattern, but unfortunately could not.

Can somebody explain to me
1) what is the difference between the two folders (sent and sent items) ?
2) why are sometimes the mails i send go to "sent" folder and sometimes into "Sent Items " folder (what is the pattern ?)

CC: (carbon copy, from the typewriter days) indicates the people who have (or may have) an interest in the subject matter of the email, and do not have to respond.

BCC: (blind carbon copy) allows you to send a copy to someone, BUT the people on the CC and TO list do NOT see the names of the BCC list, when they read the mail.

Somehow the default options in my Word editor for Outlook got changed and I can't change them back. It put a lot of space before and after each line--any time I hit enter, it goes like triple space. It also puts this space into my autosignature.

I can do a select all, format, and change it, but only for the selected text, nothing permanent. It's very annoying and wastes a lot of time.

Any ideas anyone?

I'm using Outlook 2003, with MS Word as my email Editor. All new emails that I create are automatically defaulting to double spacing. When I go:

Format/paragraph/indents and spacing the options there are telling me that its 0pt before and after and its on single spacing - but it obviously not! I've tried switching it to plain text and the problem remains. Its not a spacing between paragraphs issue as it appears without hitting return, although I did try shift+enter but it still comes back with double spacing.

If I switch it back to not using Word as my email editor the problem disappears, but when I open word its not having this problem within there - only from Outlook.

I don't use any signitures, and neither am I using any stationary. The email opens with the Style on normal - same as Word application itself.

I'm pretty good with word, and what I can't solve myself I can usually find on the net somewhere, but this has me scratching my head...and it hurts. I've seen a fair few posts but no one seems to be able to solve it.

Any help would be a huge relief.

Hi,

probably a very simple answer to this hopefully. Every week someone sends me a Word doc usually titled something like

Reviews 94 August 2012 week three.doc

to three email accounts, a yahoo account, an POP3 account serviced by Outlook 2007, and a POP3 account serviced by Thunderbird 14.0 (these two are on the same machine.)

Since we switched hosting, the emails never come through to the Outlook and Thunderbird accounts. Other word attachments do get through from the same sender, as do every other type of attachment. The attachments in question are usually no more than 80KB.

I have whitelisted the sender in the Plesk control panel, that didn't make any difference. I have also spoken to the host but they seem to think it's getting stopped somewhere in transit as they can't see the emails in question arriving on their mail servers having given them specific time/dates.

Zipping the file means it does get through to the Thunderbird and Outlook accounts, but the person sending is somewhat of a luddite and I would prefer them not to have to do an extra step. Plus, it irks me that there is a problem at all. I still think it is something to do with the current host given the timing of the problem starting, but...

I have uploaded an example of what is getting stopped. Any suggestions? I have tried renaming the files etc.

I would suspect your current host as well since it gets to Yahoo without problem.

A quick look shows some strange characters below the title in the Doc on the TM line.
It might be getting blocked by their security.
Try removing that line and see if it will go through.

This fixes the problem of having word show an empty address book from Outlook Contact folder when doing a mail/merge in Word.

1. I went to Outlook, clicked on Tools, then Email Accounts, then View or Change Existing Directories or Address Books

2. I then highlighted Outlook Address Book and clicked on Change

3. I then removed each address book listed, clicked on close, clicked on finish.

4. I then went to each Contacts Folder and right mouse clicked and selected the Properties option.

5. I then clicked on the Outlook Address Book tab

6. I put a check mark in the "Show this folder as an email address book"

Prior to all this each contact folder already had this checked. So God only knows why this issue existed but it did.

After doing these 6 steps I went to do a mail merge in word and selected the Contact Folder that had been showing up empty before. It no longer was empty.

I am having issues with outlook 2003.

When i first open outlook i get an error message: avg extension for Microsoft Office Outlook - access is denied.

Then while outlook is open I am constantly getting an error message popping up: The add-in "C:\PROGRA~1\AVG\AVG8\avgxch32.dll" could not be installed or loaded. This problem may be resolved by using Detect and Repair on the Help menu.

When I try the Detect and Repair I get this error message: msiexec.exe cannot be started.

When I try to print I get the following message: Printing is not available. There are no printers installed. You can select and configure a printer in Windows Control Panel.

I can print from other software on the computer.

Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated!!!

I have a system that was running Outlook 2002 and as word 2002 as its text editor and it has worked fine until recently. When I opened up Outlook 2k2 recently and tried to reply to a message, I received this prompt "This form requires Word as your email editor, but Word is either busy or cannot be found. The form will be opened in the Outlook editor instead. An OLE (?) registration error occurred. The program in not correctly installed..."

Does anyone know who to resolve this? I have attempted to repair Outlook using its built in repair utility but that did not fix it.

Please, help.

A:Solved: Outlook 2002 unable to use Word as Text Editor

The detect and Repair within Outlook will only fix Outlook issues. There seems to be a disconnect between Outlook and Word. Try using the repair installation options by popping the disk in or by using the Change option from Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel for Office Xp (You will need the disk either ways.)

If this doesnt work , then try removing the entire Office suite and reinstalling. You wont lose your Outlook data nor the other Office documents in case you were wondering.

Hey y'all,

Been searching for this answer the past day & am stumped.

The long subject tells the tale but here is more detail.

I have a Word 2K doc that I want to fax to my clients automatically. Their fax numbers are in my Access 2K database. I used mailmerge and found my data source, click merge, get the merge dbox and select electronic mail. Help I found said this is what is used for faxes as there is no fax option. I click setup & select my data field w/fax numbers. When I click merge I get a check names box from Outlook 2K saying no matches found for my # in the db. I've tried the testing from MSKB, everything checks out. I have removed check names in Outlook. I'm at the end of my rope. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Hi all
I'm now configuring Outlook 2010.

Things like email I've never really paid much attention to since on my machines they always seem to "just work" (from OE==>OUTLOOK) and EVOLUTION on Linux.

However setting up an account on Outlook 2010 I've got a choice between IMAP or POP3. The ISP I'm using supplies both so what should I choose here.

I rang the ISP but got fed up with the endless dreary "Press X for options a.b.c.d", then another load of automated messages with another set of options again before probably being connected to some call centre in India / Bangladesh or wherever .


(If I was ever dictator of the planet my first act on day one would be to OUTLAW all these automated telephone systems and have HUMANS answering them --it would create loads of jobs too ).

So what should I choose. In the past I think POP3 was always the default and never given it a thought but I've seen IMAP mentioned a lot recently.

Anyone ?

I have all my contacts including postal address and email addresses stored in outlook 2010 as contacts it syncs to my iPhone and generally it works very well.

But when I want to send an email to one of these contacts I start the new email and go to the outlook address book but then if this is a recent contact that I have not emailed before.

I have to add the email address into the outlook address book as a new contact.

Then outlook asks me if I want to update the person in the contact list, clicking yes adds the email address to the contact list.

But why do I have to add the email address into the address book why does it not retrieve the email address from the contact list

So is it possible to add all my contact emails addresses into the address book without having to do them one by one.

Address Book was actually Windows Address Book that came with WinXP and was used by Outlook Express. Contacts in Outlook could be used to import from WAB. The Contacts in Win7 is located in C:\Users\YourLogin\Contacts appears to be separate from Outlook's Contacts which are stored along with messages, settings, etc., in Outlook's .pst file.

Outlook is an email client to read email messages like Thunderbird or Safari. It is not free like the other two. Outlook.com is an email service, like Gmail or Hotmail or Yahoo that is free. This might read all of your email accounts. Download Mozilla Thunderbird

Hey Folks,

Client opens Word 2003 and it is in Print View, but when he opens a Word 2003 attachment in Outlook 2003 it will always default to the reading pane view. How do I change the default view for the Word 2003 document when opening from Outlook.

When the "Options" tabbed dialog box appears click "General"
Uncheck "Allow starting in Reading Layout".

I'm using Office 2003. I went through the steps of doing a mail merge from word. I selected the Outlook contact folder I wanted to use and it shows no contacts in it. However, there are plenty of contacts in that folder. So I tried another contact folder and it worked just fine. Any suggestion on this one folder?

Right-click that Contacts folder and hit Properties. Go to the Outlook Address Book tab and make sure it's checked to be seen as email address book.

I am getting much more spam than other users in my company. I use Outlook Express via Pop3 to get my email while other use Outlook 2003 via an Exchange Server.
Would I see a drop in spam if I used Outlook 2003 to access my email using Exchange Server instead of Outlook Express via Pop4?

Hi,

I am trying to tie up some loose ends after having to execute a Clean Install of my Windows 10 Home last night because of corrupted files I couldn't fix any other way.

To make a long story short prior to the Clean Install I had a paid version of Microsoft Office 2013 Professional Plus on my PC and was using Outlook as my main email address for the last few years. While trying to determine what was causing my corrupted files (I couldn't download or install any Windows Cumulative Updates since Aug. 31) some folks thought that maybe my copy of Office 2013 could be part of my problem.

While 'nosing' around Google this morning I found what I would call a free 'light' version of 'Outlook.com' and downloaded and installed it. After logging into my Outlook account I am able to send and receive emails using my Outlook email address. However, I can find none of my contacts anywhere on the email page.

That really doesn't bother me that much because I have backups of many of the addresses. What I really want to do is find a way, if possible, to save this version of Outlook to my taskbar as I did my paid version. With my previous version when I received a letter a small envelope would appear on the Outlook icon on my Taskbar alerting me to incoming mail. Is that possible with this free 'light' version?

Well i did a big report on my computer with Word Perfect i couldnt print it so i took to school on my flash drive. IN my first class i edited it on Word 2007 and in the class i could print it they had Word 2003 and i couldnt open my file and now i cant even open it in word perfect. I doubt i can use the laptops for a while anyway i can open this on wordperfect

If you saved the file in the "new" Word 2007 format (with a file extension of .docx) then you will be unable to open it in the other applications.

For Word 2003 you can install a converter, but I know of no XLM converter for WordPerfect.

When using Word 2007 you need to "save as" Word 97-2003 format to retain backwards compatibility.

Does anyone know of a good free MP3/WAV editor?

I used to have a program that let me edit out parts of songs (like silent parts, or even delete parts of songs that I didn't like).

It also let me change the playback bitrate (for example, reduce song from 192 kbs to 128 kbs).

I don't remember what program that was, and I lost it when my computer crashed last year.

If you know of a similar free program, please let me know!
