Old Windows User Finding it Hard to Transition

Q: Old Windows User Finding it Hard to Transition

Hello, is anyone in the same boat as me? Windows 8 is so vastly different from previous operating systems that I find it hard to transition to it. Any shortcuts or pointers would be appreciated. Right now I just want to take the computer back to the store and ask them to put Win 7 on it.

Preferred Solution: Old Windows User Finding it Hard to Transition

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Chandenee, don't feel alone. I felt like a deer in the headlights myself when I got my new Windows 8 laptop. I don't need touch and tiles.

Here is a good place to go to find out how to get it looking like 7: Start Menu - Restore in Windows 8[1]=Taskbar%20Start%20Screen

I've installed a Maxtor 20gig HD as a slave to my WD 20 gig boot drive. I used the software I downloaded from Maxtor to partition and format the new drive. The bios Auto-Detect finds the drive, but Windows is not "seeing" it

Any ideas ??

A:Windows is not finding new hard drive

The OS does not see drives--ever; it sees only partitions. I think the problem is in the fact that you used a utility other than Microsoft's FDisk to partition the drive. That, combined with the fact that the drive is a slave, is your problem.

The software you used is probably some kind of drive overlay, intended for use on the Master (bootable) drive. Since the bootable drive is another drive, the overlay never gets activated and, therefore, the new partition isn't seen by the OS.

Drive overlays are to be avoided whenever possible.

Create a Windows Boot disk.
Turn off the computer.
Disconnect the Master drive.
Set the new drive as Master.
Boot from the startup disk.
Type FDISK /MBR and press enter.
Type FDISK /MBR and press enter again.
Type FDISK and press enter.
Now delete any partition that exists.
Create a new partition.
Format the new partition.
Turn off the computer.
Set the new drive back to slave.
Connect the old drive back as master
Turn on the computer.
Your new partition should now be "seen".

Hi. Well to start out I tried to format a partition on my computer I made after recently reinstalling windows xp onto my computer and shortly after the formatting was finished my computer shut down. I then spent a few hours searching for possible answers.

Not finding one from the Internet nor my brother or friends I decided the only way forward would be to reinstall windows or try to use the windows repair function on the installation disc. Much to my confusion after trying to do so a screen popped up saying that windows couldn't find a hard-drive connected to the computer.

I have absolutely no idea what to do so I would thought pleading for your help would be a necessary option. So please if you can help I would be very appreciative.

Thank you for reading and possibly helping.

My apologies for posting two threads. As I am currently posting from my iPod, as soon as I find a way to delete the other thread I will. until the I would appreciate it if anyone with any information could post on this thread.

Thank you and sorry again.

I purchased a new hard drive as my old one broke. I have plugged it in correctly (checked this with seagate diagnostic tools which recognise the hard drive is plugged in and allowed me to do a quick scan to check it was ok.) When I run windows xp installer it cannot find a hard drive. Please help. The following is the harddrive information and processor:

The new hard drive is:
Seagate ST3500630AS 500GB Hard Drive SATAII 16MB Cache 7200RPM - OEM

I am using the following processor I bought 3 years ago:
AMD (Newcastle) Athlon 64bit 3400+ 512kb L2cache 754pin Retail Boxed Processor with 3 Year Warranty and Fan Included

Since buying the processor I seem to have lost the setup disk that came with.

A:Windows xp setup not finding new hard drive. Please help

More than likely if your bios recognizes the drive and XP does not you will need a driver which can be loaded from floppy or CD when XP setup first starts you will see a prompt at the bottom of the screen something like "Press F6 to load 3rd party drivers"

I am working on my friend's laptop, a Vostro 1400. It's been dumped on a lot, but this one problem is baffling me. I am booting into the Windows installation CD to fix some boot issues in the first place. (It has the default boot system as something called "Windows" that boots to nothing, and I can't seem to remove it and set it back to the correct option that is also available.)

The problem starts almost immediately when booting to the disk. It loads to the repair/continue page, and whether I hit 'Enter' or 'R', it tells me that Windows can't find a hard drive etc etc... F3 is my only option and it just exits and reboots.

I am so confused. If anyone can help me, you will have my undying gratitude.

Man I said "boot" way too many times.

I am using a usb bootable drive to install a fresh copy of Windows 7. I have used hade USB copy of Windows for some time now so I know that it works.
My issue is at the moment is once the install starts and makes it to the screen that ask you which drive you would like to install windows on it cannot locate any drive.
I says something similar to no useable drive or something similar. (I do not have the screen in front of me) The list is empty. You have the options of opening a command prompt, advanced repair options, or load drivers. From what I see I need to
create a new drive but cannot figure out how or if I'm trying to do something I don't need to do.
Any help walking me threw this Please.

Hi, i really hope someone can help.

I have a Windows 7 Laptop which i bought in January, at the same time i bought a WD 2TB external hard drive to back up all my files onto (last laptop broke and i lost everything so decided to keep everything off the laptop itself)

This has been working fine for me until last week. I was using my laptop with the hard drive plugged into the USB port transfering files across when the hard drive suddenly disappeared off my laptop. since then when i plug in the external hard drive the laptop doesnt recognise that there is any hardware there. I have tried plugging in other USB devices and they work fine so pretty sure it isnt the USB port thats damaged and i have tried searching for new hardware in the control pannel but it doesnt find anything. I have also done the right click on my computer and go to manage to change the disk number that have seen suggested on other forums but it doesnt show up on there so cant change anything there
The light on the hard drive comes on and starts flashing as soon as i plug the USB into the computer but doesnt show up at all. i have tried restarting the laptop and reinstalling the drivers but this hasnt helped at all

Couple some please help me figure out what i need to do to sort it out? i am getting pretty desperated because all of my files are stuck on it!

Hi there, I recently tried to change my OS from Ubuntu to Windows 10 but couldn't see my usb in the boot menu so I formatted all the partitions including swap to NTFS using Ubuntu's disk manager, hoping that I will be able to boot from usb if the partitions were changed to NTFS format. hello, i just got a new computer. the thing is for some reason when ever i minimize or maximize, or close, or open a window it opens from like top to bottom. im not sure how to explain it but it makes the webpages slower. when i open a web page it will say done while the window is still like "scroll opening" i guess would be the best way to describe it. it just opens from the top then kind of unscrolls till it gets to the bottom. it is VERY annoying and ive tried changing visual effects and everything in the virtual memory menu and nothing works. i have a PCI nividia geforce fx 5200 (dunno if that helps) but please help me fix it. oh and i have 512mb ram and no other processes running in the back round (like 97% FREE) so i know its not lagging, im just hoping its some stupid setting thats checked some where i cant find.

I upgraded my Yoga 2 pro to windows 10 and the Lenovo Transitions utility stopped working.  Basically, tent stand or tablet mode reveal no automatic switch.  So I had windows run it in compatibility mode for windows 8.1 and it worked for a little while.  Now it no longer works and I have tried having it ran in compatibility mode again to no avail.  Even the screen lock button does nothing.  Ive tried updating the program, however when I click "check for updates" it gives an error saying no internet connection available (i do have a connection).  Any help with this problem would be greatly appreciated!

I had the very same problem with my Lenovo Flex 2-14 after I had upgraded my laptop to Windows 10.I finally solved the problem. Here is how I dealt with the problem.Step-1: Uninstall Lenovo Transition and reboot the computer.Step-2: Install Lenovo Transition 2.1 (http://support.lenovo.com/tr/tr/downloads/ds101908)Step-3: Open Device Management under Control Panel and update the driver for Intel HD Graphics.Step-4: Make sure Ctrl+Alt+Down Arrow turns the screen 180 degrees. (Ctrl+Alt+Up Up Arrow brings the screen to its normal position)Step-5: Now check if the screen is OK when the laptop is in the tent mode.

I am running XP Pro 32 bit on a two drive system and want to install Windows 7 Pro on the second. I have partitioned both drives to use partitions for logical drive storage. I do not need to see either operating system partitions from the other. What is the best way to install Windows 7 without potential problems and with anticipation of eventual complete transition Windows7?

A:Dual Boot as transition to Windows 7 Pro 64

Hello ghm46, welcome to Seven Forums!

First of all, Windows will only boot independently from "Primary" partitions, it will not boot from a "Logical" partition.

If you want to use the BIOS boot menu to boot both OSs/HDDs independently of each other, only leave the HDD that you want to install Windows 7 to connected at the motherboard; disconnect the other, install Windows 7 and then connect the other HDD back up.

I have had a stable installation of Windows 8.1 Pro for several years now. I have a folder with about 3000 images that are shuffled through using the default Windows 8.1 Personalize options, desktop background slideshow. No third party software is used for this.

I have a dual monitor setup. Extended displays.

The problem I am suddenly having is that when a wallpaper fade-transitions from the current image to the next, once the fade animation has completed, a small area/portion of the previous image will flicker onto the screen for a split second, usually near the bottom. It does not happen every time (1 out of 10 or more), and I can not cause it to happen on purpose, even though it will happen when transitioning automatically, or through the right click, Next Desktop Background option.

There have been some changes to my system, but they did not cause any immediate issues.

Like a basic tutorial of being a mid-level or little more advanced user of it? Best practices?

Not hing special, really, just to replace Total Commander as a general file manager. (Which means, how to best do the two panel things with the Windows Explorer layout?)

OK, maybe 2 things:

1) Somehow it showed files (w/ number in their names) not in alphabetical order, like:

Instead of

As 7-Zip showed them correctly.

2) I need the ability to add something like 2 associations to a file type.

Example: I associated checksum files to an external checksum solution (Rapid CRC, pretty cool). In Total Commander I hit enter and it run the checking, while I could also quickly view or edit the same file with F3/F4. How to do this in Windows Explorer?

A search did not find what I was looking for.

A:Want to transition from Total Commander to Windows Explorer. Any help?

I don't think you'll find Explorer anything like Total Commander. You could add QTTabBar to get a multi-tabbed interface. But it's not going to be designed for push button actions like a file manager.

You could try FreeCommander as alternative. It has a very nice file renamng tool and is multi-tabbed and free, Also the folder sync tool is excellent.

I always see the Lenovo logo ion the red box, but about 10% of the time, the screen is blank after that.  I need to kill the computer by holding down the power buton on the dock until the computer goes off. When I restart the machine, 95% of the time it will work properly. I have used Thinkpads in docks in this manner since my old X21 and Windows XP. On Windows Media Player all is well with the transition settings.
When I put the wmv into another media player (VLC media player) the transitions DO NOT work as I specified in Windows Photo Story 3.
The same happens when I upload the wmv file to Google Drive or to YouTube.

My niece's machine - generic ordered online.

Started a couple of days ago. Trying to open either IE or FF browsers were a very faint image - unable to access anything online. Thought of restoring an image using the Macrium boot disk, but the "boot" image on the screen lacked all restore information.
She called Verizon tech support and he told her the modem (FIOS is unavailabe) was bad and sent a router. I connected it, but got the same results.
Finally, I decided to try reinstalling Win7 - did not see the install disk . Disconnected the original C: drive and jumped another in its place - the disk began loading and all looked good until I to the page that asked for user name and password. She had misplaced the original info.
Calling verizon I got a "tech support", after having an hour trying to understand him and try his efforts to get the machine setup, I gave up.
My question; are ISPs required to give one his/her user id and password when requested? If not, the only alternative is to change ISPs.

A:Problem finding user id and password

I assume this PC works fine, other than that you can't get online with it?

Re Verizon support: you say "I gave up".

Was there a language barrier and you literally could not understand him due to his lack of English language skills?

Was he possibly competent in English, but could not explain how to pour water out of a boot?

Was he possibly competent in English and gave possibly accurate information, but you couldn't follow it for some reason? If so, what was that reason?

Or did he appear to be unwilling to provide instructions as if he feared you were unauthorized and trying to break into someone else's account?

Is your only problem the lack of user ID and password? That is, if you had them, would you know how to resolve your problem?

Is Verizon the only game in town?

More info needed.

Hi, I am currently running Windows 7. I would like to transition to Windows 10. When I try to install 10 I get an error message that says I don't have enough RAM. I do have enough RAM, no question of this. Apparently, Windows and my PC's motherboard don't communicate too well. My local computer shop said maybe I have to get a new motherboard--no updates out there, I guess, for the old board. This seems like an unnecessary expense. Any ideas for a work around? Thank you.

A:Windows 7 transition to Windows 10 problem

You say you do have enoug ram, yet in your system specs for memory you say unknown. Roght click computer and select properties. How much ram does it say you have. Also,

Please fill out your System Specs

Your System Specs will help us to help you, and doing it in this manner will make them available to all helpers in every post and keep us from hunting for them. We ask that you fill them out in as much detail as possible including Desktop or Laptop, Model number if it is an OEM computer and all components with the Manufacturer and Model number if possible.

If you will go to your last post and click the 'System Specs' in the bottom left of the post, you will find a link to update your system specs. Please fill those out in as much detail as possible, making sure to click save at the bottom of the page. If you would like to know what we would like, you can click 'My System Specs' at the bottom left of this post to see mine. If you do not know what your components are, this will help you accomplish this task. System Info - See Your System Specs
We could help you better if we knew exactly what hardware we are dealing with. Go to your motherboard's web site and look at the specs for the board and download the manual. It will tell you what kind of memory it takes, the total amount and how much each Dimm Slot will take.

Hi, I?m in a quandary about toolbars.
Hmm sounds sad eh?
Anyway here is the scenario, I have taken advantage of creating toolbars on the taskbar through the various incarnations of Windows as it suits the way I work. It occurred to me that it would be useful if the toolbars I created could be integrated into a registry script which
1 ? Could either be merged into the registry to prevent from having to recreate the folders when I change them around or
2 ? Could be hard coded into the right click toolbar menu like the original ones Address, Links, Tablet PC Input Panel and Desktop.
Also it would be great to be able to remove some of the original ones especially as they are not needed.
Does anyone have any ideas on how to do this please?

My WD20EZRX (2TB Green) is coming tomorrow and I've decided to enchance data integrity by using ZFS since it will be sitting in the closet and I'll be running scrub every few months to keep the data in check, since scrub scans the whole drive, not just the metadata like chkdsk in windows.

However I know Windows 7 can't natively support ZFS, I'm wondering what kind of flowpath is out there to make this more faster, I have a lot of files to transfer and a lot of sorting to do, I don't want to waste time resorting stuff since I have all my drives full I don't have much spare space.

What about running linux as VM, possible to transfer files like that, so i can make live sorting in windows, just tab into linux, transfer, and go to the next batch.

I do have ability to put up linux ... right now I have Linux Mint on another separate hdd test but I haven't used it much so I can overwrite that partition, any ideas or linux mint is fine?

Also have a look in Disk Management whether it is there. Maybe you have to initialize it and assign a drive letter. For Initialize right click on the left pane of the drive (where it says Disk 0, 1, etc.). To assign a drive letter, right click on the right pane. You may also have to format it (take "quick format" - with full format you are in for 10 hours)

eg: I know what a reverse DNS lookup is...
DNS maps names to IP addresses, and reverse DNS is IP to name...great...

but where is this applied in the real world? why is it useful?

any help appreciated please

I have recently updated the computer motherboard (MSI Z87 MPOWER) , graphics card (NVIDIA GeForce GTX 650) and OS from Vista to Windows 8.1. I have installed 3 Hard drives but the OS will only see 2. I have files on this HD and require them. How can I get the computer to see them? I have EaseUS Partition Master free Edition and this program can see them but I'm unable to open them.
Thanks in advance.

What does Disk Management say about the drive? Does it appear in Device Manager?

My laptop apparently is having a hard time booting. I start it up, it will display the blinking cursor and stay like that forever, i hard shut it down and the BIOS will search for new hardware (as its suppose to) and then the blinking cursor will appear for around a minute before booting up! this is really annoying and ive already Reset the BIOS to default and Reinstalled windows (deleted all Partitions and made one) any help?

EDIT: The problem only occurs when laptop has been shut down completely, it doesnt happen during a simple restart

Could be a HD problem. Have you run a chkdsk?

Run CHKDSK /R /F from an elevated (Run as adminstrator) Command Prompt. Please do this for each hard drive on your system.
When it tells you it can't do it right now - and asks you if you'd like to do it at the next reboot - answer Y (for Yes) and press Enter. Then reboot and let the test run. It may take a while for it to run, but keep an occasional eye on it to see if it generates any errors. See "CHKDSK LogFile" below in order to check the results of the test.

Elevated Command Prompt:
Go to Start and type in "cmd.exe" (without the quotes)
At the top of the Search Box, right click on Cmd.exe and select "Run as administrator"

Go to Start and type in "eventvwr.msc" (without the quotes) and press Enter
Expand the Windows logs heading, t... Read more

Hi there,
I've taken my mate's laptop to format the hard disk and re-install Windows XP. It's almost all done but I can't find all the drivers on the net.

Laptop info:
Model name: EQUIUM A110-252
Model number: PSAB2E

I've already found most of the drivers on: givemefile.net/equium_a110

But going through: System Info -> Components -> Problem Devices ... It still shows the following drivers not installed:

Ethernet Controller
Network Controller
PCI FLASH Memory (this one shows 3 times in the list)
SM Bus controller

I've tried going directly to Toshiba's website but they don't seem to list this model anymore.

Any help out there?

dougieboy wrote:...  HP is: Type HDD... Interface Type SATA 3 GB/s    Spindle speed 7200 rpms  Interface Class Serial ATA   Capacity 120 GB.. [email protected] Welcome to HP Support Forum. The following link shows specs of your computer:      https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c00683794 It uses SATA II (or 3GB/s) HDD. Basically you can use any standard SATA II or III 3.5" HDD on the market today. Since machine is still running Windows XP, to be safe (due to old BIOS) please try HDD from 500GB down.  HP uses HDD's from few vendors, please try Seagate, Hitachi, Toshiba from the following list          https://www.centrecom.com.au/internal-desktop-hard-drives (Note: check your region/country, they should stock those drives). Regards.

It does not find any other usb or disk or even Windows (preinstalled, I saw on kali live that all the files are working). I do not have any more any Lenovo app due to a complete formatting made to fix a previous error (I would like to have them back...)What can I do?

So I have 4 hard drives and a SSD at the moment, but i'm trying to add 3tb hdd in place of another old smaller drive.

Problem: When I installed windows I had 3 drives plugged in so some how it put the MBR on one hard drive and my windows on another. Now when I unplug one hard drive to add my new one my computer says there are no bootable devices. Is there a way to maybe move it to my ssd with my new windows on it? or Make a new one?

A:Finding the MBR and moving it to another hard drive to add new hhd

I think the easiest way to solve your issue is to use your Windows DVD to repair the SSD drive. If you want that to be the booable system drive, unplug all other hard drives and then repair the SSD.

I hope you can help me in my problem I'm facing.

I really searched for it a lot and I tried ALL possible solutions which I found in most sites talking about this technical problem but still the problem not solved

I have explained the problem fully in the following address:

Thanks in advance,

A:WIN XP Pro is not finding my slave hard drive

this is because you have windows on TWO hard disks at the same time.

SATA drives are ALL master drives. 1 drive per channel.

Your OS is confused as to which drive is which and therefore defaults to channel 1.

The only solution is to format each drive and leave windows OFF one of the hard disks
You may lose data unless you swap out drives and move the data offline (like a zip drive, etc....)

You really need to share more about what's going on and what you've done so we can help better. You installed a new hard drive? Bios recognizes it? But the OS install can't find it? It's a Sata Drive? Jazz

When computer boots it gives me a boot disk failure and wen I check the bios I find that the biso hasn'f ound the hard disks. Sometimes it finds them sometimes not. Coulld anyone please tell me how the problem can be solved?

Thank you

A:bios isn't finding hard disk

take the motherboard out of the computer with the hard drive power supply and RAM. See if it recreates the issue outside the box. Sounds like bad ground or bad mobo if this really is an intermittent issue.

Not finding hard drive on start up. Then shut down without prompting during testing

A:Not finding hard drive on start up

Dublove Hello;Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums!I read your post about no boot device found and wanted to help. These problems are generally due to one of two basic problems:1) Failed hard drive2) Corrupted/missing boot loader filesAs to the first, please follow the directions in this link for testing your hard drive: http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c00439024If that confirms your drive has failed, then you need to replace it.  Please report back if that is the case.As to the second, you will need access to a working PC for this step in order to create the media needed to repair your PC boot loader.Once you have that, please download and create Win10 install media from this link: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/media-creation-tool-install?ocid=ms_wol_win10Yes ... I know that is for Win10, but it uses the same generation boot loader as Win8x, so it can be used to do boot loader repairs for Win8x as well as for Win10.Boot from the media you created, and follow the directions in this link:  http://www.windowswally.com/how-to-fix-error-code-0xc0000185/You will probably have to run Startup Repair three times for it to fix all the boot loader problems. When done, your PC should boot OK.Good Luck

Hi, my computer crashed and I had to replace the hardrive and purchase windows 10 operating tonget my computer going again. However when I try to custom install the new operating system my computer asks me where I want windows to install. It can't find my hardrive so It only gives me one option and when I click it it say "we couldn't create a new partition or locate an existing one". So I tried command prompt and checked disk drive and it can't locate my hardrive on there either. I've tried entering F2 for setup when starting my computer but it doesn't work. I'm stuck on what do do next. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
