USB Flash malfunction.

Q: USB Flash malfunction.

I'm trying to set up a wireless network but I get a message that the flash disk is write protected. How do I remove the write protect? Also, the disk no longer shows up in 'My Computer' as 'Flash Disk' but as SOFTWARE'. Is the disk knackered?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I inserted my flash drive (which was all along doing fine) into my comp and it did recognize but the USB drive did not reflect in My Computer list of disks. I removed it and inserted again, Windows says that the USB Device is malfunctioning and therefore cannot recognize the device!!!

After this the flash drive is not being recognized in any computer.
Is it the end of the drive? What can I do breath some life into it?

A:Malfunction of USB Flash Drive

Have you opened Disk Management and see if the drive is there?

Try this:

Unplug ALL USB devices.
Open Device Manager.
View, Show Hidden Devices.
Uninstall all devices under USB Controllers.
Uninstall all devices under Storage Volumes. Say no to any reboot prompts until you are finished. Also, if a Storage Volume doesn't uninstall, ignore it and move to the next one.
If you have a yellow ? with unknown devices, uninstall all of the entries there as well.

When this is done, reboot TWICE.

Reconnect the USB devices and see if they're recognized properly.

My flash drive was working perfectly this morning but today went I went to my university's lilbrary, I could not access the files using the computers there. Every time I tried, a pop up alerted me that "the USB device has malfunctioned" and it could not be recognized. I tried it on my laptop, and it worked like normal for an hour or so and then I began to get the same alert. Is there any way I can fix it or at least retrieve the information on my flash drive?

hello i was fixing my buddies computer (dell) and needed to create a bootdisk to update his bios, and there was an option to create a bootable floppy or a bootable flash drive and i didn't have a floppy so i used my sandisk 1GB flash. after i copied the bootdisk files to my usb flash i restarted his computer with the usb flash connected and it did not work. the problem isn't that i couldn't update his bios because that was not really important, the real problem is that now my usb flash drive cannot be recognized by windows and i get the "USB Device Not Recognized" message on my computer whenever i connect it to the usb port. i understand the problem, and that is copying the bootdisk files to the flash drive changed the system files or whatever on the usb flash that tell windows how to handle it, and now windows sees that it isn't a regular usb flash anymore (now its a bootable disk), which is why i get the error message. i think what i want to do is reformat the usb flash outside of windows but i dont' know how to do this. ANY IDEAS??????

Hello,

I purchased a 64 GB hard drive recently. I'm having a really difficult time copying jpeg files onto it - or any files, for that matter. I used this: downloads.pcworld.com/pub/new/utilities/peripherals/SP27608.exe to reformat it, and when I did, now it seems to be working, but I only have 32 GB of space!

I know for sure that there is at least 62.4 GB of space on this disk, so how can I 1) get it to work and 2) get ALL of that space to work?

I'm also going from Mac to PC and back again, and I've noticed that on both computers, I have difficulties, so it's not one or the other... it's the drive.

Please help! Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hi,

A few days ago, I started getting 1-2 minute long system hangs where basically, my screen would freeze and sound will either playback in extremely slow motion, start stuttering, or just no sound at all. The system is completely unresponsive during this time but it usually recovers after a minute or two. I am running Windows 7 64bit.

I'm reasonably confident that I have pinpointed what is causing this to occur; Flash Player or something associated with it. I realized that only when I'm running something that uses Flash Player do I get these system hangs. When I play Youtube videos, my system will hang randomly and when I was running an application that uses Flash, my system would also hang. Playing a 1080p video file in WMP for an hour straight does not result in these system hangs at all, so I don't believe it is a video/sound card problem.

I've tried reinstalling my sound and video drivers, as well as reinstalling Flash Player but unfortunately, this has not solved the issue. I did not recently install anything onto my system. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks.

On any type of browser used, it freezes? Have you tried running antispyware/malware programs on your system? Are you on the latest driver versions installed?

Explain hang, does it just freezes and does nothing until you manually power off the machine or does it give you blue screen of death with error codes etc
http://www.techsupportforum.com/foru...ta-452654.html

When you reinstalled the drivers, did you uninstalled the old drivers first and freshly installed the new drivers or just install over?

also can you provide more information about your computer? make and model
if custom build then list the specs of your motherboard, RAM, CPU etc

if you are unsure about them you can download speccy to give you that info

I recently purchased an HP ProBook 450 G3. I am using two passport compact 1 TB drives with my laptop's two USB 3.0 ports. In normal use there is no problem. However, when I copy a lot of data from one to the other (or from one to the laptop's internal drive) the drives keep disconnecting. I know this because first I will get a copying error saying either the source or the destination is missing. Then I will hear the "chime" that Windows makes when a USB device connects or disconnects. Then the autoplay window for the Passport drive will appear. It seems that it spontaneously disconnects and then reconnects. I can continue using it for a time afterward, but it always spontaneously disconnects at some point, always when I am doing large data transfers.

I wondered if I have a poor physical connection---the USB plugs seem a bit loose. I checked if there is any vibration or movement that could break the connection, but so far there is no evidence that anything is moving. The disconnection always happens when a lot of data is being transferred, while the drives are sitting completely still.

Any ideas how to debug this?

A:Hard drive malfunction? USB port malfunction? Or just normal?

This is a hard situation to diagnose from a distance IMO. "Loose" is somewhat subjective, and barring serious abuse the only kinds of usb connectors & ports I've ever seen fail mechanically are mini and micro USB2 types.

I'd be inclined to suspect the drives first, especially if they are from the same family and were produced around the same time (the "bad batch" phenomenon). Have you tried to reproduce the problem on other machines, or with different drives on your machine?

We have IE 6. Say a user goes to MSN.com. The ad on the right is a Flash object. Some of our users will see that object flickering when scrolling up or down on the page or when hovering their mouse over it. It's quite annoying. Almost all users are running Adobe Flash Player 9, but I think I've seen this happen on systems with Macromedia Flash Player 8 as well. Other systems don't have the problem. I've seen this happen on one system and not another while both seemed to have the same Flash objects installed.

Uninstalling all Flash players using Adobe's prescribed Flash Player uninstall tool seems to work at first, but users later complain again. Note that they just about always end up installing Flash Player 9 again, because sites ask for it. I don't believe I've seen this on any XP systems at all, including my own, but most of our users have Win2K.

Does anybody know why this happens or how to permanently fix it?

Thanks,
Hotshot309

A:Ie 6 - Flash Objects Flickering - Using Adobe Flash Player 9 Activex R28 (shockwave Flash Object V. 9.0.28.0)

More info: Adobe Flash Player 9, Macromedia Flash Player 8, and Macromedia Flash Player 10 all produce the same result--Flash objects that flicker when you put your mouse over any part of them. Moving Flash objects will flicker constantly while moving and stop flickering when the animation is done. SWF files (at least the one at www.stormwerks.com/linked/stuf/AYB2.swf) work without a problem when using Adobe Flash Player 9.

If I don't have Adobe Flash Player 9 installed, the Win2K machines prompt me to install them for almost any site that uses Flash (I guess most recent Flash objects cannot be viewed with the older Macromedia Flash Players).

Any suggestions?

First and foremost, please post your computer specs. Posting computer specs definitely helps us troubleshoot computer issues more efficiently. What is the brand/model of your laptop? Do you have warranty on your laptop? It's possible that the fan inside your laptop is dying.

Hello all,

Well, to get right into it, my PSU conked out. I shut down my computer (Start > Turn Off Computer . . .), it didn't automatically turn off like it normally does. So, I tried the power switch, nothing happened. Finally, I flipped the switch on the PSU. Obviously, it was off now.
The next day, I went to turn it on, and it didn't. I tested the power switch, it was fine, so the next thing to check was the PSU. Took it to a computer service store, they tested it, it was dead. I sent it back to the company, they sent me a brand new one. And that brings us to today.

I installed the PSU in my computer, hooked it up to everything (mb, harddrive, video card, CD-Rom, fans). I pushed the power button, the PSU lit up (it has a lighted fan on it) and the fan went on, this lasted about a second, then it shut off. Well, then I went through step-by-step:
- Connected only the motherboard to the PSU - turned on, stayed on, beeped.
- Connected the motherboard and the larger fan - turned on, stayed on, beeped.
- Connected the motherboard, larger fan, and the harddrive - turned on, stayed on, beeped.
- Connected the motherboard, larger fan, hard drive, and video card - turned on, stayed on, did not beep. (apparently it was beeping because there was no video output.
- Connected the motherboard, larger fan, hard drive, video card, and plugged everything into the back of the computer - turned on, stayed on.
- Connected everything listed above, plus the smaller fan, turned an... Read more

A:PSU Malfunction

Although there are things like power surges and lightning strikes that could kill a PSU, there is really no reason to try to come up with a scenario for what happened. Often they just die and it can be without warning. I think you are saying that now everything works. If the new PSU suddenly quits then you may have a problem that needs to be figured out.

The fan set up looks pretty standard.

Have you looked in the Task Manager to see if you have any Yellow marks by the usb hubs on the tree in the left pane? If so, that would indicate a driver problem.

My modem is usb and required a download into it for it to function properly. The software came with the modem. Also, try another usb port if you have one on your computer.

DEP processing is flaky. Setting /noexecute=OptOut and adding HP digital monitor to the exceptions list does not cause DEP enable for all processes.

No 'restart needed' popup is displayed....
?? CHROME, AVAST, FIREFOX all show DEP (permanent). All others DISABLED.....
?? setting /noexecute=AlwaysOn works, all processes DEP'd, BUT disallows HP digital monitor (can print, cannot scan or retrieve printer info).
I do have Administrator privileges but thought I noticed a popup (IIRC) re two items (processes?) not functioning, CIMV2? perhaps and one other. WBEMTEST checked for DEP 3 (OptOut), verified it was set (I forget the Superclass now, under root/cimv2).
Is this a Startup issue of some kind? Something not loading? GPEDIT under XP not helpful unless DISabling access to various options.

I have a Toshiba Satellite laptop with XP Home Edition on it. All of my drives and devices connect externally and I access them through 3 different USB ports. A week ago I began having problems with my USB ports.

When I turn on my laptop, the devices (a mouse, keyboard and printer) initially are recognized and run well. Then I hear the noise from the comp as if I unplugged a device and my mouse, keyboard and printer are all no longer recognized by the comp. Sometimes I hear the noise as if I plugged them back in, sometimes I don't hear that noise but get an error message saying that my devices are not working properly and need to be replaced. All of my devices are in reality functioning properly. There does not seem to be consistency in when the USB ports stop functioning. During this time I am not touching the connections and at times am not even actively using the comp.

Do I have a trojan virus? or are my USB ports beginning to simply malfunction?
Any suggestions would be really appreciated. I can't do much with a laptop that cannot save a file to a disk or print a file. I have ad ware and spy ware removal tools (ad aware, spybot search and destroy, spyguard) as well as an updated firewall and antivirus (zone alarm suite) running on the comp. No major risks or problems have been found by these programs.
Thanks!

Hello everyone, first time poster, so sorry if I mess up ^^

Anyways, I just got a new laptop, specifically a Lenovo 80XS0086IX Ideapad 320-15ABR. Initially it all seemed fine, but as I used it I noticed several problems: 1) it cannot remain in sleep mode for long. After a while, it just switches off abruptly. I have tried several combinations of lid closed/open, power cord in/out, but eventually the result is always the same. 2) When powering it on after these shutdowns, the trackpad does not recognize multiple-fingers gestures, requiring a restart. 3) The disk usage frequently goes up to 100% despite no ongoing activity. 4) Sometimes, pressing the power button to power it on results in the disk starting, then abruptly stopping, then restarting again several times, before the laptop finally starts. 5) The system sometimes freezes for several seconds, even the cursor stops, only to resume any input movement later.

I have tried everything in my knowledge: I updated the BIOS, the HDD firmware, installed all Windows updates, fresh-installed Windows, but nothing seems to work (although the HDD thing apparently solved the "always 100%" problem). I ran both Windows in-built check-disk and third party programs to check for errors on the HDD, but none showed up. I'd be really glad if it was something I can fix at home, since I really need this machine to study, so sending it to be repaired/replaced back at Amazon is my very last option due to time. This is on a Sony desktop vgc-ra810g with the pci express video. Using a flat screen the image has horizontal frozen lines and is un readable 9 times out of 10. I have updated the bios from the sony web site and also installed a video card update with no positive results. I also have uninstalled/reinstalled the card. I installed a basic matrox pci card and it too had the same problem. The only thing i can do is restart and hope it is readable. Figures this occurs after the 1 year warranty expires. Should have known better when sony was not offering extended warranty. But i was sold by the liquid cooling, low noise and s/pdif out to the stereo. Any ideas would be welcome. I am preparing to jettison the unit.

Two weeks ago discovered WinDVD software packaged with my 5 year old Dell 4100. After loading software, DVD film ran normally. Tonite when a DVD inserted after opening program, film would not run only a minute and then freeze. Removed software and after reloading following message appeared " An exception OE has occurred at 0028:C0030AEC in V&D. This was called from 0028:C1813C99 in V&D. It may be possible to continue normally." Any help in figuring out solution to this problem will be much appreciated.

I will use my keyboard, eventually the keyboard will not work. For instance I will press the h key and the find window will appear. You know if you press CTRL-f you can search for text or find text. Other keys will also open other commands I am not familiar with. After I reboot my computer, everything works fine. However it starts all over after a time of using the keyboard. Does anyone have a idea of what is wrong with my computer?

i was actually going to post a related question, and rather than clog up the boards, i guess i will post it here. I too have a mobo with only USB 1.1 (I guess since i doesnt say usb 2.0 anywhere in the manual), it has 2 on the back and 2 headers. I recently bought a usb 2.0 pci card as well. My question is, can a mobo with out usb 2.0 be able to have a usb 2.0 card? or will the usb ports act like 1.1s?

I also bought a media card reader that says it's a usb 2.0 interface, can i hook this up to a usb 1.1 header on the mobo?

Even though it appears you're having the same problem, please start a new thread. It's very difficult to keep two problems straight and who's working on what in a single thread. Thanks for your cooperation.

Hi-

I already posted my HijackThis Logfile in that forum, but it came up empty.

Basically my scroll bar jumps up and down all over the place in any program that I run in windows. If I leave it alone for a minute and come back then I am able to use it briefly before it starts jumping up and down again. When it really gets out of hand I minimize the window and then it the actual computer beeps a couple of times.

When I terminate two of my svchosts, I can browse momentairly before they pop back up and it does the scrolling thing again. I know that there is a command to see what each svchost is doing, but when I hit enter the dos window only comes up for a second. What's the button to lock the screen to actually see it before it closes?

Here is my most recent Hijackthis log:

I have been having a persistent problem with my trackpad that updates and adjustments cannot seem to fix. Often when I'm using the track pad it constantly zooms in on whatever screen is on dispay when I don't want it to zoom, making it very difficult to use the trackpad normally.Any solutions?

A:Trackpad malfunction

Hi, This problem can be caused by a touchpad setting called 'Pinch Zoom' - you can disable this as follows. Open windows Control Panel and in the top right, next to View by: select 'Large Icons'.  From the new layout, select the Synaptics entry. Remove the checkmark next to Pinch Zoom ( see the image below ), then Click Apply and Ok to save the change.  Regards, DP-K

I have an Epson WF-3540 printer. I have used Epson printers for years with no major problems. My black cartridge will not print. Iíve put in new cartridges, cleaned the head many times with no printing results. Epson is at a loss of what to do. I just wonder if anyone had any suggestion on what what I can do. In the past I was able to reset the pads but this is not something that can be done on this model apparently

id get rid of all non essential programs and have a clean out. you have translators, web page printers and screen shots takers, loads of usless rarlyused stuff, do you really need to have all this stuff running all the time?

personally id do a full format and start again and only install the programs that i actually use if my pc got in a state that bad :)
but if you dont want to get ms antispyware here http://www.filemirrors.com/search.sr...e&size=6860424

From one day to another, those two devices dissapeared from My PC in Win 2000.
According to windows, their is a malfunction with both drivers (conected with the same IDE cable), in which windows cannot load their drivers (error called: code 31) for the ATAPI CDROM and the HL-DT-ST CD-RW GCE-8240B devices.

I tried to remove and re-install their drivers (then reboot the system) and nothing happened . Then i tried updating those drivers but the problem still persists.

I would be enormously thankful if some one could help me with this, since i need inmediatetely those devices to work.

Bye
