I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi, If you normally access the Admin account with an email and password, see if you can reset the password via another PC from the Microsoft page on the following link. https://account.live.com/password/reset Otherwise, there is a general policy on the Forum not to provide methods to bypass Windows log-on passwords, however a local computer shop would be able to do this for you. Another option, if all your personal data etc is backed-up, would be to reset the notebook to its 'Factory Condition' and then set it up from the beginning ? if you don?t have your Recovery Media, the notebook will have shipped with a Recovery Partition which can be accessed at boot - ie shutdown the notebook, then start tapping away at f11 as soon as you power on. A full guide on this can be found on the following link. http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c00006110#!&AbT1%3Fjumpid=hpr_r1002_usen_link1 Regards, DP-K

I have Windows 10 Pro - Version 10.0.14393 Build 14393

I somehow lost my Administrator privilege and now can't run numerous programs because I forgot my Administrator password.

On the login screen both my Account and the Administrator Account is displayed. When I click on Administrator, the Administrator login screen appears and the tiny circle goes round and round for approx. 2 minutes and then a black screen appears. After about 20 minutes the screen was still black so I gave up. I had to switch users (to my account) by clicking "Switch User" via Ctrl+Alt+Delete.

I've made sure the Administrator account is enabled as per instructions that I had received - i.e. checking that a registry key value is "10" not "11". See attached.

I am currently using my Microsoft Account for sign-in. I doubt this makes any difference.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

There is no legal way to "craack" a business computer, your IT has to help you recover your Windows. If this is a personal computer, with proof of ownership of both computer and of your windows, a local computer shop may be able to help you at least get your data files onto an external media if not able to legally run password-hunters. Otherwise, it is time to totally reinstall -- and this time keep a written record of usernames and passwords locked in a drawer somewhere.

I recently installed Windows 7. During installation, there will automatically be a user with administrative privileges. After completing, i created another "Standard User" as I wanted to limit other users for accessing all things. Then i opened the Built in Administrator account (net user administrator /active:yes). I deleted the account that i had created during installation of windows. Then I disabled the original administrator account (net user administrator /active:no)

Now i only have Standard user account. whenever I try to open anything 'as an administrator', there will be a prompt in dimmed screen, asking for administrator password and click to yes; but there is not any place to enter the password.

How can I fix it? Please Help

Thanks in advance!

A:Administrator Account Lost!!!

Hello Sushil, and welcome to Seven Forums.

As you found out the hard way, you are required to have an administrator account for a standard user to be able to enter the administrator's password in a UAC prompt.

You might see if you may be able to use the tutorial below to enable the built-in Administrator account at boot, and create another password protected administrator account.

Hello. I have Windows Vista Home Premium 32 bit.

Upon restarting after attempting to change my SID [I KNOW. STUPID MOVE ON MY PART], I cannot access my old (Admin) account on my PC.
Is there ANY way to recover from this? I mean there has to be some kind of solution to getting the account back considering my hard drive is still filled with all of the data stored on the user account & I can still see the folder on my guest account, just can't access it.

PLEASE help. I've tried so many things that just don't work.
ALSO: When I try getting into Safe Mode, it gives me some sort of error like, "Windows could not connect to the SEN service. Please contact your system administrator."

You can restore the account by using System Restore to restore to a point BEFORE you deleted the account.

Hello 19Reaper90

If you are at the Welcome screen and want to log on with the Administrator account, but it?s not listed, Press CTRL+ALT+DEL twice( Hold CTRL+ALT and press DEL twice) to bring up the Windows 2000 logon window, which then allows you to log on as Administrator.

Try pressing ENTER for the password

Note
For XP Home you have to do this in Safe Mode

1. Trying to show the hidden administratoraccount in safe mode but it says access denied.

2. Adding a user at the command promptbut I get access denied.

3. Using the backup CD but I get anerror message.

Would anupgrade to Windows 8 work?

Anyideas? Thanks

My suggestion is to reinstall--or recovery or restore to factory defaults--Windows 7.

Or, as you ask, you could buy and install Windows 8 assuming it is compatible with the PC and software that's used.

Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3 - I MESSED UP! This was not a virus. I am a volunteer "semi-tech" at a charitable outreach. (The outreach is open to youth and various groups some evenings, too.) This computer is used with dual monitors, the 2nd being a projector for powerpoints and videos. Problem is that some of the volunteers or those they are serving keep getting on here and downloading junk, including trojans that I have to come clean up. We can't risk this continuing; so, they asked me to set this PC up the same way I did those in the office - with an administrator password and everyone else using a linmited account that is not password protected.

Had so many calls about Conficker and people coming in while I was working on this that when I set up the password - I accidently clicked "yes" when it asked if I wanted the administrator's documents and files to be private. So, now other users cannot access the songs, videos and shortcuts need for their presentation. Even after I removed the password, it still did not "share" or allow me an option to change that setting. I searched for how to undo or manually change it back (not private), but could not find a solution.

So, I created a new user account "New Administrator" with administrator user type, so I could then change the old "Administrator" to a limited user to give me more options to share via the new administrator account. I thought I had done this be... Read more

Are you running Windows Vista? The "Administrator" (default admin) account can only be used in Safe Mode on Vista. If you are running a differnt OS try going to Start -> Control Panel -> Classic View -> Administrative Tools -> Computer manager -> Local Groups and Users -> Users -> Administrator -> properties -> (make sure the account isn't disabled (there is a tick box to toggle enabled/disabled)). Hope that works.

I set up a new machine for a friend who is not at all technical. So as simply as possible for her: crucially, I didn't use any password during setup. Then ran Classic Shell to bypass hideous Metro interface. Installed various programs. All working okay.
But on trying to use photo apps already on the machine, was startled to get message that I had to stop being an Administrator and open a User account! I did that. But then could not get back into an Administrator account! All my installed programs and settings and files are now lost to my low-tech friend - who is getting on an international flight with the computer in 30 hours time!
Also I cannot even reinstall the op system as it came installed, without disks (an HP Compaq CQ45-805TU)
I have done a quick check here on tutorials and others' troubles, but find nothing very close.
All my attempts end at a demand for an Administrator password. And I need a fast solution because of that flight, or she may never speak to me again!

A:Administrator account mysteriously lost

You don't have to be a restricted user to use modern apps. The condition is you can't be a built-in Administrator.

Unfortunately, your problem description is useless for troubleshooting, so I have more questions than answers...
Have you set up your friend's PC for use with the built-in account named Administrator? If so, you must have another administrative account with which you logged on the first time.Is the "User" account restricted or is this an administrator account?Have you created a recovery CD or USB-flash?What exactly do you mean by "could not get back into an Administrator account"? What prevents you specifically?Post the results of the net user command.

Hello,
I am running W7 Ulitmate 64-bit with a quasi-Administrator account and 2 standard User Accounts. This morning I booted up and decided to go to the Administrator account to do some house cleaning. It took the password and then stated it was preparing a desktop. It came up with the standard new user desktop, not my personalized one, and said this was a Temporary Account and does not have the privileges of the quasi-Administrator. Everything was fine last night, as I recall.

Help!
I recently created a password account for the administrator for logon purposes. I then created another account, Wadud also making the new account with admin rights. I wanted to ensure my documenets were not accessible to another user, thus the need to have two user accounts. However when I now logon onto my laptop it automatically loads the 'Wadud' Admin account. I therefore cannot access my documents from my original administrator account or my profile settings eg internet favourites.
I have gone to - setting, control panel, user accounts but it only shows two accounts; Wadud & Guest.
I have checked the user profiles - setting, control panel, under system, advanced, user profiles, settings. On there it shows the two admin accounts, the new one - Wadud & the original admin account, which shows 3.6 gb so I'm guessing I have not lost my files!
I have tried to copy (setting, control panel, under system, advanced, user profiles, settings, copy to) the old admin files to Wadud account but it comes up with an error message "Failed to Set Security on the Destination Profile. Error - Access Is Denied"
Please can someone tell me how to delete the new Wadud account and go back to my old admin account!
Many thanks!!

On my laptop, I lost all the settings for programs, bookmarks, etc for an administrator account in Windows XP Pro.

I only had one account on the laptop and am adding additional users onto it.

When I added another user, it told me to "create an administrator account", confusing me since I was using an administrator account all this time. So, I created another one. Or so I thought. More on this later.

I created a limited account on the laptop.

I rebooted.

To my horror, my original administator account is gone In it's place is the administatator account I just created with a generic set up.

I tried a system restore to the the prior setting before doing this and it didn't work.

I want my original software settings, bookmarks, desktop settings (icons, etc.) back. Is there any way to do this? (Other than the hard way, i.e., manually doing an easter egg hunt through the hard drive.)

Try the "Admistrator" account in safemode. I think that's the only way to access the default Administrator account in XP Home after you have created another Administrator account.

Two things when you upgraded you probably created a windows.old folder with all of your old data. Second you can enable the built in administrator account but that one is not the same as your other user. If your other user was administrator there may be a way to get it back.

So what was your user name?

In the process of following this procedure:

"Bypass the Windows XP/Vista Welcome Screen

By default, when Windows XP or Vista starts up, it loads the Windows Welcome Screen, which prompts you to click on your username and enter your password. However, if you are the sole user of the PC and you know that no one else will gain access to it, this is a bit of a redundant step. Instead, you can configure Windows to log you in automatically and load straight in to the Desktop when your PC starts up, bypassing the Welcome screen. To do so, follow the steps below:
1. Press [Windows Key] + [R], type control userpasswords2 in the Run dialogue and click OK.
2. Select your username from the list, then untick the option Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer.
3. Click OK, enter and repeat your password, then click OK again. The next time you reboot you will be logged in to the Windows Desktop automatically.2" .........

I appear to have somehow lost (deleted?) my "Administrator" account, and the only account I can access is my "Standard User" account. I am completely blocked from doing anything to recover the situation by Account Control, which has the "OK to proceed" button greyed out no matter which recovery method I try to access. A:Administrator Password In User Account

Here is a link. Not sure if will help, but helped me.
Add Take Ownership Option Shortcut in Right Click Menu of Windows 7
Go down to the link that says download "take ownership"

Unzip the file, using WinRar.

While in said user account, go to the files you unzipped, double-click the "install Take ownership.reg"

It will install a right-click option in the context menu that allows you to take ownership of a given file or folder.

BE ADVISED: maybe make duplicates of the .exe files in question in case it doesn't work. Or you can re-download them again I guess.

If it works and you are done and happy, you can double-click the "removeTakeownership.reg" and it will remove the entry from your registry as well as the option in the right-click context menu.

Sudo chntpw -u <myusername> sam
for some reason my SAM file is in lower case letters, anyways after using that to remove the password on my account, it says it was successful and i saved it and even checked it again and it says that it no longer requires a password, but when i rebooted my pc into windows 7, it still asked for a password, and after trying to a few other things like unlocking the administrator and guest accounts, 3 things happened: my account's profile picture changed, the password hint i typed disappeared and switch user option appeared, i tried using it but it for administrator it requires a password even though chntpw says it doesn't, and for the guest account it says that the method i'm using to log in isn't allowed.

"administrator user - Is an unelevated administrator account that is created by default during the installation of Windows 7, or is already setup or you on a OEM (ex: Dell) computer. An administrator account has complete access to the computer, and can make any desired changes. To help make the computer more secure, this administrator account type will be prompted by UAC by default to give confirmation before allowed to make any changes that require elevated administrator rights. Such as those that affect the system, other users, or when running anything elevated (Run as Administrator) since running elevated will allow it to have access to the entire computer".

The above was taken from a Forums tutorial. Is it possible to require a password for this account when operating in the standard User Account ?

For example, when I update the Windows Defender definitions, I right click the file and click "Run As Administrator". It does so without requiring a password.

When "Run As Administrator" is clicked, I would like to have to enter a password.
Possible or not ?

I have the Windows DVD, and have tried a boot repair, but it tells me that the OS is booting correctly (which it is).
Where to from here ? It's wasted a helluva lot of time, and I just seem to be going round in circles.
How can I give this profile I am using Admin rights ? Don't seem to be able to do anything without the Admin password.
Thanks for any advice offered.

Well you thought about activating system restore with that user? or creating a password reset disk?

I just received a laptop running windows NT 4.0
The original user is no longer with the company, and did not leave her password or the administrators password. The machine has a local domain, and is a member of the company domain. The company domain administrator has logged in, but is not allowed to load new software due to lack of administrator privaleges. No one knows the local domains administrative password. Do I have to reformat the hard drive and re-install windows NT or is there a way around the password issue? I need to load new software!

Hello everyone. I can not seem to figure this out on my own and was wonderring if anyone here can help..

Anyways, heres my problem; My girlfreind has a computer, which was given to her a few years ago. It has been set up so that she is the administrator. In order to do anything, such as install programs and games and such, one must be logged in on her account, becuase she is the administrator. It has been set up so that all functions of the computer have to be done when she is logged in. Heres the problem...... We have forgotten her password!!

I have tried using the password recovery programs but cannot do so becuase the computer wont let those programs access anything becuase we are not logged in on her administrative account!

We are running microsoft windows XP home edition version 2002.

Anyways I thought that a solution might be to reformat the computer, which is fine becuase I was gonig to do that anyways but when I access the MS dos command promt and type in FORMAT C, it says "invalid drive specification"!!! What do you mean "invalid drive specification"!!! Its installed in C!!!

Anways I am running out of ideas here and would be most grateful if someone could help me. Even if we cant recover the lost password if someone could help me to reformat the computer that would be great.

Thanks a lot,

Glacius

I did not set up an Administrator Password on a relative's HP laptop but now it is asking for one before we can do anything. She recently wanted to download Adobe Reader and it asks for Admin password. I have tried to fix the problem, but it asks for the password for everything. Also I noticed that her security checker is off and it won't let me turn it on. I can not download, upload, make any changes etc. I have read everything online and tried the "cmd" prompts some have suggested, etc. It says the administrator is "active:no". What else can I do? I'm afraid it has a virus to prevent me from doing anything, but can't even check that. Help! She can't afford a repairman.

I got system Boot Fail when I tried to start the PC.
I inserted the CD when prompted and booted into the recovery console.
I hit '1' and then was stymied as I don't have an Administrator Password?
Ultimately, I restored the contents of the Hard disk with Norton Ghost [which I had taken the precaution of doing earlier] but I would like to know how to find the Administrator Password for XP Professional please?
Many thanks.

Installed Windows 8 on my desktop. Bought another licence (download) for my wife's laptop. Everything went fine until I used netplwiz to change her to the administrator and only user. I thought that went ok but now she is the only user and I'm being prompted for a password everywhere which doesn't work. I can't even run a third party application from a thumb drive. I wouldn't mind reinstalling Windows 8 if that's the fix but I couldn't find the executable after it downloaded and installed. I probably wouldn't be able to execute it anyway without admin privileges. Tried to buy yet a third copy of Windows 8 to reinstall on the laptop and I couldn't even do that without admin privileges.

Anyone have any suggestions to recover or reset the admin password or how to reinstall Windows 8?

Hello specialkone, and welcome to Eight Forums.

You might see if you may be able to use OPTION TWO in the tutorial below to enable the built-in Administrator account at boot. Afterwards, sign in to it, and see if you may be able to change the password, make sure your account's type is administrator, or what you need to do to fix this.

Built-in Administrator Account - Enable or Disable in Windows 8
Hope this helps,

Hi,

Okay I have my daughter's computer that I'm trying to get her stuff off of.

There is an administrator password which she has forgotten.
Then her name - that is password protected as well.

I got an external hard drive to get her stuff off but, cannot log in.....HELP!!

No idea the password and she can't remember as it's been awhile.

Any advice appreciated.

She has a lot of stuff that I don't want to have to "wipe out"
