When I open Windows explorer via 'My Computer" I can see my files, even open and view. But when I try to move with a drag n dop or cut and paste, explorer pops up a window saying that it has stopped working and looking for a solution to the problem, then shuts down.

Most of windows icons are missing, ie in Accessories, Calculator, notepad, paint etc are all generic.

Preferred Solution: Can see and open files in Explorer but can not move, copy or paste.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

The taskbar no longer works. Minimized programs disappear and can only be accessed thru the task manager.

Task manager says Explorer.exe is running. It was actually running 2 of them last time I checked.

Double clicking of most program icons will not open the program.Occasionally there is an error and other times there is no error, nothing happens. Right clicking an icon and attempting to open it that way does not work. Some programs work, some don't.

Have run virus scans, malware scans, spyware scans etc. Should be pretty clean.

System restore does not work. Error say "System restore is not able to protect your computer." Says something about restarting the computer but that doesn't help.

PLEASE does someone have an answer, i've been searching everywhere, my Dell laptop has done the same thing.
two days ago I picked up a virus, the fake MS antivirus scanner thats clogs up the system with fake error reports.
I went through the manual removal instructions i found on various sites.
seemed to work.
I ditched my antivirus app and installed avast as is has been very good on desktop machine.
everything was fne until i tried internet explorer, i searched something on google then everytime I clicked a result I was taken to a random site, firefox worked as normal.
So I searched and found a lot of people having IE and google redirect problems, I tried to follow instructions to fix this and someone suggested just doing a diskclean using windows system tool....
after doing this my machine rebooted in windows basic mode, no XP options in appearance, AND no network drivers....NO internet.
AND no task bar, managed to bring up a task bar but it is fixed with links for desktop, my documents, my computer, and network places.
programs seem to open ok BUT there is no copy and paste
drag and droping icons doesn't work, I tried to plug in an external hard drive to backup some files and it had to reinstall the drivers, then I couldn't move any files.

I am in real trouble here. All my wife's work files are on the machine, the external hard drive was bought to backup her data, and now the laptop is completely locked in, I can't get anything on to it or off it.

I cannot move, copy or paste files or folders within Windows Explorer or another file management program called xplorer2. I am able to delete and write to a folder though and I can copy and paste between programs. I have Windows Vista x64 Home Premium Service Pack 2.

I have run both virus and anti-spyware scans, run System File Checker, gone into safe mode and looked all over the web; but no change and no answers. I have done a system restore (oddly there was only one restore point) but o fix. I hate to have to reformat; that takes me many hours, days, and weeks of work.

I have been able, however, to use a syncing program called SmartSync which was able to copy and move the folders but it is not as quick and easy for quick and simple moves.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hello.

I went on vacation last week and bosses computer was running slow so he attempted to use a registry cleaner. This of course rendered his computer useless.

The main problem is not being able to copy+paste files. This just suddenly happened, and I'm not sure why. When I copy and paste, the copied file doesn't appear. It does sometimes show after a restart though (as if it was just hidden before). When I delete a file, the icon won't immediately disappear until I have refreshed the window or the desktop. I cannot move a file from it's folder into another folder or desktop either.

I should say that sometimes when I press ctrl+C and the 'V' and don't take my finger off of the ctrl button it will work, but only sometimes. If lift my finger off the ctrl button after pressing ctrl+C, and then then press ctrl+v it won't work. If I do this rapidly I eventually can get it to paste, but I have to do it several times.

One thing that works is that when I create a new user for my computer, everything works like it's supposed to, just not on my account.

I've tested this mostly on the desktop.
I've tried the "scannow" in the command line. It showed no problems.
I also ran msconfig from the command prompt and disabled the "startup" of everything. This worked at first, but after a few minutes the problem came back.
I also uninstalled my antivirus software, and doing that didn't help.
I did a system restore and it didn't do anything either.
I ran malware bytes and scanned with AVG Antivirus. It didn't help either.

Again creating a new user on my computer works, but I really need the account I have.

I'm running Windows XP Professional SP2 with AVG 8.5 as my antivirus. A few weeks ago, I had some pop-ups, random audio ads with no visible windows, and a weird process showing up in Task Manager (svchasts.exe). Then AVG said my E-Mail Scanner wasn't running. Then it stopped updating, then it stopped scanning on schedule. I reported the problem to AVG; they sent me a repair installation that I was able to run and it found and healed a couple of viruses, but there was one that it found and couldn't get rid of: a trojan named Cryptor.

So I searched for help on Cryptor (that's how I found you guys ) and I got some info about MBAM and SUPERAntiSpyware. However I couldn't install or run either program (even after renaming). I was able to get a bit of a reprieve when I downloaded and ran the Sophos anti-rootkit; it got rid of the pop-ups and ads, but I was still running slow and some of my links were being intercepted by Google searches, i.e. if I opened nfl.com, I'd end up with a Google search for nfl.com.

Last weekend, I booted up and was unable to start IE or Firefox; said I couldn't connect to the server. Funny thing is that both my modem and router are showing a full connection to the web (I can still browse on my PS3). In addition, None of my peripherals are recognized: the computer says I have no printers installed, it says I have no access to the Network Connections folder, it says I have no scanner installed, it says I have no CD/DVD drives i... I am using XP - Service Pack 3. When I restarted my computer yesterday it came back on missing nearly everything - all classic view, missing internet, my antivirus and malware removers were all missing, and I can't copy/paste nor move anything on to my external drive to save it.
All that's left of my software is SUPERantispyware and HijackThis - ran superantispyware in safe mode which removed a few things but nothing major. I have a hijackthis log if it would help - I noticed there are a ton of 023 -- files missing type errors. Depspite my better judgment I went ahead and clicked fix on every single one that said "file missing" which prompted me to restart - when the computer came back on, same problems, and all the 023 errors showed back up in HijackThis.

Hi all,

I was referenced to this forum by a member of a different comp community specific to overclocking. S/he told me that people here are more knowledgeable about my problem =p. I really hope you can help me.

As the topic title says, I cannot copy, paste, remove or cut files at all. It works fine when it comes to text editing but not when it comes to files. I can't seem to empty recycle bin either.

I'm the admin on my system with full priveledges, and I've never had this problem up until today. I tried a system restore to when it did work, but that didn't help, so I restored it back to how it is now.

Ran Avira virus scanner, nothing came up. I have absolutely no idea how this happened and I really want it to stop, as I need to adjust a few files and remove a lot from my recycle bin aswell. I've tried googling this problem but no answers came up.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated, I really dont want to do a system re-install >.<

JaeSwift~

P.S: I also do not remember running a registry cleaner before I had this problem. I do have CCleaner installed and use it on occasion, I just can't remember when this copy/paste problem started because I haven't had to use functions like that for a while. Copy/pasting works when it comes to text on a side note.

Lol. That's some nice illegal-sounding file names you have there.

As long as this is 'any old random file' and perfectly legal, then it seems some program has locked your files. Try a restart.

Regarding 'not found' error: the files may be split up, Find the .mkv file and put it in same place.

All of thesde functions work fine bgut there is no way I can get a video onto a flash drive or USB external Hard Drive tpo work on the player.

I have some home vids that work fine when viewed using Windows Media Player but using Windows DVD Maker or drag 'n drop to the flash drive just doesn't seem to work.

I have tried so many different ways I have lost the plot altogether!

So firstly how can I "transfer" them/it to either of the following and then be able to watch thew on the player.

The flash drive is in NTFS format as is the HDD so there should not be a file size problem.

I also tried Nero but again no joy!

Lastly I have a fishing DVD that is not copyrighted and I have used this as an example of trying to copy/burn it to the flash or HDD - yep, nothing!

Appreciate if someone can point me in the right direction.

I have been working with Vista Ultimate x64 edition for almost six months now. After a recent update from Microsoft my computer would not boot. I was able to run the system restore from the Vista install CD and select a restore point from a few weeks ago and got the computer back up and running. My problem now is that I find that when I try to copy and paste nothing happens. Also I find that right clicking on a file or folder and selecting delete also does nothing. I have tried dragging the folder onto the recycle bin with the same results. Nothing. I first thought that it was a permission problem, but checking that shows that I am the owner. I think it maybe registry problem. What is weird is that I have rocketdock installed and I am able to drag and drop the file onto the recycle bin on rocket dock and opening the recycle bin shows the newly deleted file. That is why I believe it is not a permission problem. Anyone have any ideas what would be wrong?
Thanks, Shawn

When moving or renaming files I frequently get an error messages informing me that "The action can't be completed because the folder or a file in it is open in another program". This typically happens with the second or third folder I try to rename or move. Navigating away to another folder and then coming back or closing explorer and reopening it usually helps but on the second rename or move I'm back to square one. I've been reading and searching on the forum and this is what I have tried so far:

stop the windows media player network sharing service
pause indexing
temporarily disable antivirus software
used the system file checker to check integrity

all to no avail. This is without a doubt the most annoying "bug" I have run into so far as it makes it virtually impossible to get anything done or organised. Has anyone found a real solution to this problem that does not involve manually unlocking every single folder before working with it (using 3rd party software - another option I have tried. Works but slows you down a lot)?

Hi linmix, welcome to 7F!

This may seem counter-intuitive, but, go to Control Panel >Folder Options >View Tab, and make sure the first box that says "Always show icons, never thumbnails" is not checked or ticked.

Hi,

after a disk scan using chkdsk, my computer started to act strangely:

-When I try to open any file with windows media player, I have a message error saying: Can't perform action, Low memory. But I'm pretty sure it's not a memory problem.

-I can't copy and paste anything.

-I can't slide a file from a folder to another.

-I can't restore items in the recycle bin.

-My sound card(well the driver, i guess) doesn't work

-When I minimize a window, it disappears but appears in the task manager.

-Some programs that used to work fine don't work

-System restore doesn't work......

I've tried everything. Virus, spyware and malware scan. Clean the registry. Did another scan..
I've seen this problem on other forums but it seems unresolved. Can someone help me please.
I would reinstall windows but I can't copy files and will lose everything....
Help me please...

I have a new Win 10 PC with IE 11, and now I can't copy-paste anymore with the keyboard controls in the DOM explorer (it only works with right mouse click)

Copy menu works ok, but unable to paste because it throws me back briefly to the Metro window. This behavior doesn't work consistently but I have to log out and back in in order to correct it. Even reboot doesn't help. Note: this is the File Explorer, not the internet browser.

This problem has started happening about 2 weeks ago and I've given up on how to resolve this issue. Maybe you elites can tell me something I don't. As stated in the title; I cannot copy/cut a file and paste it at a different location. This also includes clicking and dragging a file to another location. Copying and pasting text WORDS still works, it's just files in general. I am running Windows XP Pro SP3. I have done a virus scan with Kaspersky Internet Security 2010 found 2 viruses and deleted them, problem is still there. I've done a scan with Spybot and Malwarebytes and deleted everything it has found and the problem still persists. I've done a cookie cleaner scan for the registry and fixed any problem it has found. By the way, all scans and deletions have been done in safe mode and rebooted after (except cookie cleaner). What I have found out is that in Safe Mode I am able to cut/copy then paste (or click and drag) normally. So I am still thinking it's either a virus that Kaspersky hasn't picked up or malware. If you have another idea on how to fix this annoyance, much will be appreciated.

A:Can't Copy/Cut then paste files

Microsoft support suggests it could be a problem with Internet Explorer.

I am able to right click on the file name and copy the file but when I try paste it into a folder, the paste command is greyed out, and Ctrl V does not work. We have to do all file transfers using Dos commands. Any Ideas?

After much frustrations from the functions that MS left out of windows explorer in vista and having spent much time chasing the net looking for answers, to the problem of not being able to customize the toolbar as i have been able to in previous versions, i finally gave up and found xplorer2 software and installed it.
This software has finally been able to get me back to many of the old and some new features as well. It works well and haven't had any system problems with it.
This is not an add or promo for xplorer2 but an answer to many peoples queries
that i have seen on the net.
As to the people at MS for deleting many of the features and not going the way of some other programs ( and i have been using MS programs since MS WORKS 1.1
came out on floppy 5 1/4") all i can say is

A:Cut,copy, paste & similar probs in win explorer

Hi, jetdriver, and welcome to the forums.

I have been using xplorer2 since before it existed, in the form of it's baby brother 2explorer, but I am not sure of what functionality you are looking for in Windows Explorer....

But you're right, my main grip with Windows Explorer is that it does not support dual pane - there is a lot of other features that Nikos has packed into his magnificent app, but that is primarily what I use it for.

Hello! ^__^ I did a search and I cannot find anything that is quite the same problem I'm having, so if I have overlooked it please direct me and disregard my query.

First off, I'll list my computer specs and any USB hardware attached:

Vista 64bit Home Premium SP1
NVIDIA 9800GT
DVD+-RW DL with Labelfish
Intel Core 2 Quad Q9300 Quad Core
6 GB DDR2 Dual-Channel RAM
15-in-1 Media Card Reader with Smart Copy
Microsoft LifeChat LX 3000 USB Headset
Microsoft USB Webcam

*Norton Internet Security 2008
*Running the System Adminstrator Account.
*All Windows Updates are current and up-to-date.

Problem: When using Vista Explorer, dragging and dropping--as well as using the Edit menu to copy and Paste--for files or folders I would receive a system ding sound and then nothing would happen. The files would not copy, cut, paste, or move. Deleting files was not an issue and seemed to be the only thing that would work.

I did a Startup Repair with my OEM disk which only partially fixed the problem. I am now able to drag and drop files and folders, but I am still unable to use the Edit function of Copy and Paste, right click Copy and Paste, or keyboard shortcuts CTRL C and CTRL V (receive the system ding sound and nothing happens).

I have tried it in numerous folders within the C-drive as well as removable devices such an external HDD or a USB flashdrive.

I hope that is enough information for someone to help. Thanks!

I can't use the native Windows 8 copy/paste. Copy works, but when I paste, I get the "waiting" cursor, then get dumped to the Metro screen. So far, the only way I can move or copy things is with CFiShellToys or TeraCopy, and I installed these only after the Native Windows 8 Copy/Paste kept failing.

I've already run SFC at the command prompt, and according the the results, all is well.

I checked the Event log, and here it is.

S.C., i cannot help you with your problem, BUT testing memory (i guess memtext) is not 100 % waterproof.

I had 4 gb OCZ 1333 mhz memory (2 x 2 gb) that was tested for 72 hours in the shop and they said it was ok.

But having problems (hang-ups) with my system, i removed 1 stick and bye bye problems.

What you could do, if not already done, is remove your memory and let only 1 stick in, then see what happens.

If you ever find that you are unable to copy and paste in the Windows Explorer, open the Control Panel. Select the Internet Options applet and click on the Security tab. Then click on Custom Setting, find the option "Drag and copy or paste" and ensure that it is enabled.

Hey guys,

Ran into a problem recently where I can't copy & paste, or move files whatsoever, in Windows Explorer. Copy and paste works everywhere else, so its not a keyboard driver issue. I took a look at a few other forum posts on this issue, and none seem to resolve the issue.

Background:

- I went through some pretty severe computer issues until I found out I had a bad stick of RAM, as determined by Memtest86. Around the same time, there was also a windows update, and I uninstalled a huge load of software I no longer used (Although I like to think I only uninstalled what I knew).

- Tried an early restore point, and the restore point seems to be conveniently after the problem was spotted.

- I believe I'm virus free. Microsoft Security Essentials says I'm in the green, and for added measure, I ran a Malwarebytes scan.

- sfc scannow says there are no issues.

- HijackThis file is included, if thats of any help.

Thanks for any and all assistance!

A:Can't copy or paste images from Internet Explorer

If you have your Microsoft Internet Explorer security set high, you may not be able to copy and paste in the PureCMS editor. You can fix this by changing one small setting.

To allow copy and paste function in PureCMS
Open Internet Explorer.

1.On the menu bar, choose Tools > Internet Options.

2.Click the Security tab.

3.Select the Internet zone and click the Custom Level button. The Security Settings window opens.

4.Scroll down to the Scripting section of Settings.

5.Under Allow paste operations via script select Enable or Prompt.

6.Click OK to close the Security Settings window.

7.Click Yes when asked if you want to change security settings for this zone.

8.Click OK again to close the Internet Options window.
