Fingerprint setup will not open Windows 10 X1 Carbon Gen5

Q: Fingerprint setup will not open Windows 10 X1 Carbon Gen5

In the settings menu under Sign In Options, when I select Fingerprint Set Up it at first appears that the command is working, but the setup window never opens. I see a waiting wheel for a few seconds and then the execution fails. Can anyone help me to diagnose this? I had a fingerprint set up and it was working fine. I noticed the issue when I went to add a second. Some diagnosis forums suggested clearing saved fingerprints and starting over, but this didnt work and now I cant use the fingerprint reader at all...

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

The fingerprint sensor on my X1 carbon is essentially unusable... Each time the laptop wakes from sleep the sensor does not start up (the green light does not turn on and does not react to any fingerprint). I wonder if the others have the same problem.

Recently I reinstalled Windows 10 and now it seems like I cannot setup Fingerprint in Windows Hello anymore. I've tried to delete the fingerprint data from the [F1] Menu and the problem didn't go away. Seems like the sensor is not the problem because it still recognize my fingerprint till the last step, also it is certainly clean. This is a really frustrasting problem as I tried dozens of time. Anyone has a solution?Stuck at the last step

There are a number of posts about this problem on another forum, but I figured I would start one here to make sure Lenovo is aware of it. Since the arrival of my 2017 x1 carbon, the touchpad has had what appears to be some sort of driver issue. The pad works fine for a few minutes after restart, then randomly it starts to have some sort of issue where it starts freezing up each time you lift your finger and put it down again. The tap to click feature no longer functions, and the cursor jumps around randomly as well. These problems go away after a restart, but will start again after ~5-10 minutes of use. It makes the computer pretty much unusable and is extremely frustrating. The only thing I've found to help is disabling the trackpoint in the synaptics settings, which brings back the tap to click, but doesn't help with the freezing issue. This also disables the physical buttons above the touchpad, which is a big part of what I love about thinkpad hardware! The problem happens on both the lenovo supplied windows 10 pro install, as well as a fresh install of windows 10 pro, both using the drivers supplied on Lenovos website. The specs for my machine are below. If anyone else is experiencing this or has any info please respond with which x1 specs youre running and anything you may have tried. Im also curious if anyone is NOT experiencing this issue, which could indicate it might not be entirely software related. X1 Carbon 2017I5-7300U512 nVME PCIe SSDWindows 10 Pro x64... Read more

Dear all, I'm having trouble with both my touchpad&trackpoint not working properly. I am not sure whether there's something to do about my hardware or not, but all things started to mess up. I have been experiencing the issue that sometimes my touchpad and trackpoint didn't work. At first I solved it through disabling driver signature enforcement, but later on both the touchpad and trackpoint lost its function after I hibernate/sleep. I have to restart the system and select that advanced boot option again to use them. I don't know the exact time the issue started to deepen, but, I'm guessing that it's about the touchpad firmware update. I installed it someday and after rebooting the program told me that the attempt to update is failed. And after that the touchpad&trackpoint became completely unusable. Both the device can be seen in the device manager but they just lost their functions. I have tried reinstalling the driver and all the installing progress seem to be completed except the firmware updating failure. Here's the log from TrackPointDetect.exe: TouchPad-Flash Utility2018-08-24 23:38:14Command Line: TrackPointDetect.exeOS: 64-bit[WARNING]: WriteCommand 0xF5 => 0xFE failed.[WARNING]: Retry 1: WriteCommand 0xF5 => 0xFE failed.[WARNING]: Retry 2: WriteCommand 0xF5 => 0xFE failed.[WARNING]: WriteCommand 0xE8 => 0xFE failed.[WARNING]: Retry 1: WriteCommand 0xE8 => 0xFE failed.[WARNING]: Retry 2: WriteComman... I made the purchase of the computer on August 07.After the traditional start, with Windows pro updates, I realized that the tocuhpad did not work properly. At times it worked and in other cases it was disabled, for this reason I had to do all the initial configuration with the Trackpoint and then with an external mouse.I proceeded to perform Lenovo Companion software and driver updates, where several features were updated.I reviewed several Lenovo forums, in English, to learn about a possible similar problem and its solution.I tried to solve the problem by checking that the BIOS was activated both the Trackpoint and the Touchpad, but it did not work.Later I tried to configure the functions with the mouse and touch panel option from Control Panel, but both functions are activated, trackpoint and tocuhpad. The final step was to uninstall the mouse and touchpad drivers, and look for the new drivers from the Lenovo web. In particular Synaptics ThinkPad UltraNav Driver for Windows 10 (64-bit) - ThinkPad.With all these steps, I have not been able to activate the Tocuhpad, and I do not consider something Good, that a new computer has these drawbacks.

I recently fully restored my Windows 10 Pro on my tx1c5 (kabylake 20HQ).I was installing new drivers and charging at once. The fan was pretty loud so decided to install BIOS Update Utility ver 1.22.It helped however when laptop turned on it stopped charging.I installed other recommended drivers from lenovo site (like power management or thuderbolt ones) but none of them worked. I didn't install drivers from sections Enterprise Management and responsible for storage. Should I?Then tried to restore system once again, but windows won't allow me without connected AC. System recovery doesn't work as well. Also, tried to look in BIOS settings, but unfortunetly couldn't found anything that would help.I don't think it is a charger problem becouse it is quite new, and the problem appeared just after BIOS update.I have 50% battery left and don't know what to do when it will be gone to 0 .I will add that both usb-c ports don't work. Can't test them with external storege, becouse i have none.Do You have any ideas? Hey all, I'm having an issue with my new X1/Thunderbolt setup, and I was hoping I could find some help here. Problem:I'm currently having a problem where my keyboard and mouse are cutting out intermittently. This happens at random for about a second or so at a time. With the mouse it almost feels as if the computer is lagging.. but it's not. With the keyboard it can cut out mid press of a key, and the letter (or it's even happened to me while pasting) will just keep going for a second or two before the keyboard comes back in and sends the signal to release the key. Setup:I have a new X1 Carbon gen5. This is replacing a Macbook Air, which I had hooked up to an Apple Thunderbolt 27" monitor (Model# A1407):https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_Thunderbolt_Display(These are both from ~2011) This is a Thunderbolt 1 monitor, so the connector is the same shape as mini-display port. Apple makes a Thunderbolt 2 -> 3 adaptor (2 was backwards compatible with 1), which I have and am using:https://www.apple.com/shop/product/MMEL2AM/A/thunderbolt-3-usb-c-to-thunderbolt-2-adapter My keyboard and mouse are wireless logitech products, and are hooked up through the monitor. The display seems to work fine. I don't game really, so maybe I'd see some flickers if there were fast refreshes going on, but for my use so far I have not seen any issues. The only issue is the hooked up peripherals (which so far is just the keyboard and mouse). These all still work f... Read more

There is another thread documenting freezing issues with the touchpad, that seem to be resolved with the latest driver update. One problem, however, that the driver update has not resolved for me, is that small and precision finger movements on the touchpad initially move the cursor correctly, but the cursor snaps back to its original location once the finger is lifted from the touchpad. This only happens for very small movements, but it creates very frustrating situations. For instance, trying to move the cursor slightly to place it on a button, only to have the cursor move away from the button once a tapping gesture is attempted. This seems to be a driver issue. The solution I have found is to disable "allow taps on the touchpad" option in Windows 10. This option is found in the settings menu of Windows 10. Once this is disabled, snap back no longer occurs, but of course, the user can no longer tap the touchpad. Is anyone else having this problem?

My Carbon X1 20bt is experiencing major problems with fingerprint reader and Windows 10. Everything was working fine with Windows 8.1 and the Lenovo software. After upgrading to 10, the Lenovo software was automatically deleted I guess because Windows 10 fully supports sign in with fingerprint. When I read my print in to Windows HELLo, it NEVER recognizes it when signing in. I have read it in to the system multiple times, but have never succeeded to log in with it. This problem has been existing for some time, but yesterday I was doing maintenance to my friends x240 and noticed her reader work without enabling Windows Hello. She didn?t have the pin installed for Hello and the reader worked just fine. On my X1, I have to put in the pin number to Hello or the whole reader is disabled. There was fingerprint reader driver update coming to x240 which I didn?t instal naturally. I tried to instal the 8.1 drivers back, but was unsuccessful. Any help would be appreciated, this is anoying!

Hello,Today I updated my Thinkpad X1 Carbon 5th Gen with the latest drivers recommended by Lenovo Vantage program, as well as the latest Windows 10 Pro updates. After conducting those updates, I can no longer sign in using the Fingerprint sensor. When I open the Device Manager to check the status of the Biometric Device driver, it shows the following message: "This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)"The sign in option using the fingerprint does not even show up in the Windows settings for Sign In. Things I have already tried:1) Update the driver through the Device Manager 2) Download and reinstall the fingerpring driver from the Lenovo drivers website3) Reset fingerprint settings in the BIOS and making sure it is enabled4) Change configuration in "gpedit.msc" -> computer configuration -> administrative templates -> windows components -> biometrics -> allow the use of biometrics and allow users to log on using biometrics set to enabled None of the 4 attempts above solved the problem. Can anyone please provide any solution for this case? It looks like a lot of people have been experiencing this issue and no one from Lenovo provided a clear and definitive solution. The latest drivers must have bugs and, in my opinion, Lenovo must stop distributing them until this issue is fixed. Thank you very much.Best.
