Laptop no longer finds 5Ghz band

Q: Laptop no longer finds 5Ghz band

Greetings,

I'm having issues with my wireless 5Ghz connection, since my laptop will no longer find it.
Well, if I disable the network adapter and enable it back on, the 5G connection will show up for a few seconds and then disappear. However, I cannot connect to it, even if I try during the short time it shows up.

My network adapter is a Killer Wireless-N 1202.

Now, the router is working properly, because my phone does detect the 5Ghz band and can connect to it, with no problems.

I think the issue might have started after I updated my network adapter's drivers. which I did this Sunday at around 2:00AM. However, later on that day when I turned on my laptop, I had no issues with 5G.

I noticed the issue last Tuesday. During Monday last week my Internet provider changed the modem and router. However, I didn't use my laptop that day and only noticed the issue on Tuesday, when my laptop couldn't find any connection and asked me to choose one.

The main router I used to have was a Linksys and now it's a Huawei one (which is both a modem and a wireless router). That being said, I've never connected wirelessly to either of those, but to a Netgear r7000 which I connected to them.

Yesterday, I tried hard resetting the Netgear router, thinking it might have been experiencing some kind of conflict with the new modem/router, but my laptop still could not find 5G yet my phone could.

I used the "netsh wlan show drivers" line on CMD and it did show my network adapter supports 802.11a. So, I don't think it's a driver issue.
Two weeks ago (prior to updating my drivers and getting the new modem/router) my laptop could connect to 5G just fine.

So, I'm entirely lost here. Any ideas what my issue might be and how to fix it?

Thanks in advance.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hi there!

So about 2 months ago, I purchased the AC53 when I moved in to a house share.
We have Virgin Media SuperHub that does both 2.4ghz and 5ghz.
When I installed it, it worked fine and connected excellently to the 5G band, a few days ago however the 5G connection disappeared off my list and now it always connects me to the 2.4ghz band.

Tried resetting my SuperHub and re-installing the drivers and software utility for the AC53 but alas it doesn't show. My phone however can find and connect to the 5G band.

I'm a bit confused as where to go from here!

Any help would be much appreciated!

A:ASUS USB-AC53 Dual Band - Can't detect 5Ghz band

After re-installing you can't connect at all or just only connect to 2.4?

Can you run ipconfig /all and post back the results.
Click Start, in the search box type cmd, under programs right click on cmd and select "Run as Administrator".
In the command prompt window type ipconfig /all and press enter.
Next right click within the command prompt and select "Select All" press enter.
Paste the results back in this thread.

Is it odd that, according to InSSIDer, the 2.g Ghz band signal is stronger (-45) than that of the 5Ghz band (-61)? My router is a Netgear WNDR4500. Just wondering. Thanks.

Arthur

A:2.g Ghz band signal stronger than 5Ghz band

It really depends on where your wireless router is compared to your computer.

5 GHz signals are effected more by walls, distance, etc. than 2.4 GHz.

Hi, I've had the DIR-825 router for more than a year now and I've never once been able to see the second SSID that broadcasts at 5Ghz. I've set up both bands with identical settings and I have a wireless N network adapter in my laptop, but it only ever sees the 2 Ghz SSID, never the 5 Ghz one. Shouldn't I be able to see it?

Thanks for any help!

A:Dlink DIR-825 5ghz band not visible

Only if the adapter is also a dual band..
Many adapters listed as Wireless "N" operate in only the 2.4 GHZ range (G). They use 3 channels to get 150 Mbps.

The D-LInk DWA-160 Extreme-N is dual band.
Also Netgear RangeMax WNDA 3100.

first off im not real saavy with computers... obviously right.  i recently bought a dual band router.  its a netgear nighthawk ac 1750. i have it hooked up, but my computer doesn't recognize the 5 ghz band or its just not on the list of available networks.  when i go to the device manager under network adapters, it lists i have a qualcomm atheros ar9485 802.11 b/g/n wifi adapter. when i get into the settings of that i try and do an update and it comes back and says i have the latest update.  dont have alot of money to buy a newly updated computer that would probably and certainly work well with the new dual band router. just wondering if there is any other options besides buying another computer?  please help as i really don't know a heck of a lot about computers, however i am trying to learn.

Can my Toshiba Model Satellite Pro C870-1E2 laptop work on the 5Ghz band with Windows 7 Pro 64 bit.Tried posing this question to Toshiba but there appears to be a technical hitch there so unable to forward my question to them.

A:Can Satellite Pro C870 work on 5Ghz band?

Hi

The Wlan frequency depends on the WLan card.
I think the notebook was equipped with the Realtek RTL8723AE WLan card which supports the 802.11 B / G / N standard

5Ghz is available only using 802.11 A or N

802.11 N standard operates at 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz but 5Ghz would be available ONLY if the WLan card would support additional 802.11 A standard; i.e 802.11 A / N.

But Realtek RTL8723AE doesn?t support 802.11 A and therefore the 5Ghz are not possible for this WLan module.

Until recently I used the 2.4GHZ band for my pc and my son used 5GHZ for his laptop on our D-link router.
A couple of weeks ago our provider installed a new Cisco modem/router-in-one (the old modem didn't work any more). We use the D-link as a second router. The 2.5Ghz band is no problem but my son doesn't get internet access with 5Ghz although if I log into the router I don't see anything wrong. Any help would be welcome.

A:No internet access on 5Ghz band with Dlink router

can we see an xirrus screen shot - the d-link is still broadcasting both signals
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Run Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector
Download and install
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to copy the program across to the faulty PC
Save the file to a USB flash drive or other removable media. Plug it into the working computer with internet access and copy the file and install the program.
You will now need to take a screen shot and copy that back to the working PC and attach the screen shot in a reply on the forum here.

Direct link to the program is here http://info.xirrus.com/Wi-FiInspectorConfirmation.html

{If the above link does not work heres another link http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_download/fid,77196-order,4/download.html}

Then run and install the program - on a wireless enabled PC/Laptop
if you get an error - You need will need to have NET Framework installed for the WiFi Inspector to function.
On windows 8 - (i do not have windows 8) but, it would appear that, When you first try to run, you may get a message that .net framework is needed, and included in that message is a link to download/install.

My PC is unable to detect 5Ghz band where rest of the devices at my home are detecting both the bands.
I have recently bought D-Link dual band router and installed at home. Router is working absolutely fine because I could see
my other laptop and Ipad are able to detect both the bands. So that says there no problem with the router configuration. Also the router which
I have bought is recently released, so there are no new updates are released yet.
As per the installation guide, 802.11a supports 5Ghz and IEEE 802 11b/g/n supports 2.4 Ghz.
My PC details :
Model : Sony SVF14A190X (an year old laptop)
Operating System : Windows 8.1 Pro, 64 Bit
Network Adaptor drivers: BCM43142 Wireless Network Adapter
Router Details: D-Link DIR-850L VER A.1 wireless AC1200 Dual Band Gigabit Cloud Router.
The network adaptor which my laptop supports IEEE 802 11b/g/n..i.e.2.4 Ghz. I tried installing the Network Adapter drivers in compatibility mode, but that doesn't
help me at all to fix the issue. Also I even had an assistance from Sony Customer support and spent few hours, but unfortunately they couldn't fixed it.
When I cheked in Command prompt, it says following thing :
Radio Types Supported : 802.11n 802.11g 802.11b.
How should I upgarde network drivers to : 802.11n 802.11a 802.11g 802.11b
Please help me to fix this issue.

A:Unable to detect 5Ghz band in my Sony Vaio PC

I think that the wifi adapter in your laptop does NOT support 5ghz. The adapter supports 802.11a which is a very old standard but it does NOT support 802.11ac which is the newest standard that supports 5ghz.

If you really wish to connect to your new router on the 5Ghz band then you could get an external USB dongle that would work.

Hi,

I have a N600 Wireless Dual Band Router model WNDR3400. My question(s) is that if I connect with a wired cable, will I be connected to the 5ghz and avoid interference with those on the 2.4ghz connection?

For example, I have a wired connection with my Playstation 3 but i believe the Playstation 3 incapable of detecting the 5ghz when I do a wireless scan. Does this mean when I connect with a wired cable with the ps3 I use the 2.4ghz connection with other users and getting interference if they're doing something like streaming?

And finally, if my Laptop is unable to detect the 5.ghz connection does that mean I need some sort of adapter? Or does it have to do something with the settings. Its enabled and is on the default channel.
[Sorry one more question, where do I go to see who is currently using the internet connection in the setup]

Hello

I recently got the newest NETGEAR router device, the NETGEAR Nighthawk X8 AC5300 Smart WiFi Router, and I am unable to connect to the 5GHz WiFi it provides on its Tri-band WiFi. I am currently only on its 2.4GHz WIFI, which I assume is lesser than the 5G. I am able to connect to the 5GHz on my smart phone, so I know it exists from the router. I am running a windows 8.1 currently on a desktop on an HP Envy 700-213 Desktop PC.

Edit: My computer supports 802.11b, 802.11g, and 802.11n radio types - which supports 5GHz WiFi
My adapter is a Ralink RT3290 802.11bgn Wi-Fi Adapter

Any ideas for why I am unable to connect to this WiFi?

A:Unable to connect to 5GHz Wifi on NETGEAR Tri-Band Router

The most likely explanation is that the wifi adapter in your HP Envy 700-213 doesn't support the 5Ghz band.

If you really want to connect at 5Ghz you will need to get a new wifi adapter for your computer.

When my Carbon 5th is connected to 5 GHz Wifi it randomly resets (drops) after several hours (connection is being lost, Windows reports "Cannot connect to the network"). Sometimes it is possible to connect again manually, sometimes only reboot makes it work again. Connection to 2.4 GHz Wifi always works totally fine. I've seen several similar topics on Intel forums with the same issue, looks like it touches several Intel WiFi adapters. No solution have been found except using only old 2.4 GHz protocols or external WiFi adaptors. I tried different drivers and many parameter sets on my router - nothing solves this issue. It is very sad to have only 20mbps with 2.4 GHz while new standards offer more than 100mbps. Did you face this issue? Any ideas to solve it out?

My Billion BiPAC 7800VDOX Dual Band Wireless VoIP ADSL2+ Router has two bands:  2.4GHz and 5GHz.  and is wirelessly connected to my laptop OMEN by HP Laptop PC  17-w007tx.  It always shows as connected via 5GHz band only.  My laptop also shows 5GHz band only in the list of available networks;  2.4GH does not show up in the list of available networks.  It is not so in my other laptop which is also connected to the same router and that laptop shows both the bands in the list of available networks.  Thus, I can choose to connect to any of the two bands as per my choice. I have tested the router and it is working perfectly; there is nothing wrong with it.I wonder what can possibly be wrong in my OMEN laptop that it does not show both the bands which it should. At times, when I click to open the list of available networks, 2.4GHz may appear momentarily only and then disappears; thus I can not choose it for connection. I would appreciate any help to resolve this issue so that my OMEN laptop shows both the bands in the list of available networks so as to choose either one for connection.

Hello and thanks for reading.

My Win7 system has run without issues for years now (I keep a clean, well-organized PC). However, within the last few months (I believe it started in late November or December) Windows Update simply stopped working (FYI, I have it set to automatically check for, but not install, updates, at which point I trigger the system to download and install). It's been "Checking for updates..." perpetually for hours (never left it for more than, say, four hours) until the present.

I made some rudimentary attempts at fixes, like running Windows Update Troubleshooter, but nothing worked. I did receive a few errors at one time (that I didn't record), but then whatever steps I took seemed to clear them. Now it simply goes nowhere.

The same applies to Windows Defender. I believe that one of the updates that my machine is unable to download and install is a Defender definition update.

At some point, I read about a fix that included resetting your Windows Updates, which I was able to implement to at least some degree. I believe that this involved booting in safe mode, clearing C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution and deleting all files. So now my update log appears clear (as if I've downloaded no updates), but the updates through November 2016 are still clearly installed.

I assume that this is inadequate information for an accurate diagnosis, so could you please let me know what you need and, if somewhat involved (error report, etc.), how to... Read more

First off, Thanks for this great site - it has been a wonderful tool and reference for me in the past. I'm now in over my head and need help.

History (what I already did):
I've been beating on this computer for awhile now. It was initially unusable due to exe file handling having been hijacked - fixed that - and the Chrome and Internet Explorer browsers failing to be able to access any sites - iExplorer now works.

I installed firefox with noscripts addon and that worked too, though was eventually attempting to open new tabs to various sites, so I knew something was still in there that I was not seeing. Also several programs were persistently getting re-named with a space prior to the ".exe" and replaced with a small file with the original name (mbam.exe, CA antivirus, dwtrig20.exe, and others).

ESET online scanner removed "a variant of Kryptik.DTO" and Kryptik.DSA trojans and I rebooted and re-ran ESET and the PC crashed a few times when i tried to re-run it.

After attempts to use system restore to a previous time failed, the system became unstable - still won't boot into normal mode. I finally got it to boot stable into safe mode, though I don't recall all I did to get it to that point.

Now in safe mode with networking, ESET detected and removed those small files mentioned earlier as "a variant of Win32/TrojanDownloader.Unruy.BN"
But, not out of the woods yet.

Hi everyone, I have a Linksys AE6000 Wireless USB adapter in my Laptop and it is 5Ghz enabled. When I first got my laptop it had Windows 8 on it, but before I did anything I reformatted it to Windows 7. Under Windows 7, this wireless adapter connected to my 5Ghz SSID on my router (the 2.4 and 5Ghz SSIDs are different from one another on my router) just fine and I was getting 500Mb/s speed over Wi-Fi. What do I do? I have tried reinstalling driver, using Win7 compatibility mode drivers, installing manually without GUI, I have made sure internal card is fully disabled, etc etc...

I checked the card WIFI card to see what the model is and it is a Intel Centrino Advanced N-6235ANHMW P/N: 04W3777. I searched EBAY and can find plenty of the same type ,m but none have the P/N 04w377?? I wonder if anyone has changed the WIFI card to upgrade to the DUAL Band with Bluetooth? If so please send the exact model numbers .ThanksRob

My Wii Band Hero Drums won't work with Wii AC/DC Live Rock Band.

I was all keen to belt out some AccaDacca beats with my newly acquired drum kit but as soon as I plug it in, my controller stops working! The game simply won't recognise that I have any active controllers until I unplug the drum kit. I've sent a query to Electronic arts about a week ago but haven't had a response yet. Has anyone else experienced this problem and importantly, is there a solution? Many thanks.

OK, this is my first time being a part of or using a tech related forum so here it goes:

I'm trying to help save a neighbor some money by fixing their wireless network.

WNDR3700 Dual band Netgear router.

2.4ghz wireless b/g/n with enabled SSID broadcast, channel=auto, mode set to 130Mbps
WPA-TKIP + WPA2-AES. wireless isolation is not enabled.

5Ghz wireless a/n enabled SSID broadcast, channel = 44, Mode is up to 300Mbps
No security encription. (i know...bad, but the lady has lots of kids and family members coming
and going from the house so she doesn't want one encripted). Video network enabled

Both Radio frequencies are enabled, fragment and CTS/RTS set to max

WPS settings = keep existing.

IPv6 not enabled, No repeating is enabled, No guest networks are enabled(however ssid broadcast is enabled for guest profile 1)
The problem, and reason for fixing the problem is that the 2.4 Ghz band light on the router is ON however the SSID is not being seen by any client in the house. the netgear interface says it is on and working. the neighbor needs the 2.4ghz band to work because the printer is wireless and will only recognize 2.4Ghz SSIDs. Also they have older nintendo DS clients they would like to use on the network.

During the day the 5 Ghz band works with very seldom (1-2) disconnects while the 2.4 Ghz band wont be visible to any device. in the evening both bands will come online, and very often will every computer get disconnected from either, the 5Ghz band wi... Read more

I just ran over this strange irritating problem on one of my laptop devices...  The connection times out and drops but still connected to router. No internet works when dropped and cant access WAN either when this happens. When this occurs the internet comes back for some second and then randomly drops fast again
The problem only occurs on 1 laptop and @ 2.4Ghz channel works just fine on 5Ghz.
When internet drops on laptop connected with 2.4 the mobile who is also on 2.4 works just fine

A:Laptop drops internet ONLY @ 2.4GHZ not 5Ghz

Please post the computer and router model next time.Download MiniToolBox and run the program. When open, checkmark or select all options then click Go.A notepad will open then copy-paste the report on your next reply.

N600 Wireless Dual Band Router WNDR3400.

I am trying to get a signal out in my garage at the opposite end of my router location. I am getting 1 bar and "poor" signal. I downloaded inSSIDer to analyse my signal and I notice that my "Wireless Network (5GHz a/n)" is not broadcasting anything. The checkbox for "Enable SSID Broadcast" is checked.

I have very limited knowledge of this stuff but it seems to me that if it is a dual band that I should be seeing 2 different signals, right?

All I see is this: Wireless Network (2.4GHz b/g/n)

I have attached screenshot of my settings

Can someone help me out with this? Thanks, Joe

This is worst purchase I've ever made. I bought this stupid laptop for approx. 1100$ and this although being i7 2.5GHz, 12GB RAM is slower than my previous i3 laptop. Like, it keeps hanging. And today I got to know that this stupid super expensive laptop cannot support the 5GHz frequency band for wireless network. So, I'll have to live with a slow internet plan of max. 30MBPS when the internet router gives 200MBPS as per my internet plan on 5GHz band. Also, I don't think this stupid laptop supports Bluetooth also. Hoping if anyone could let me know of ways to get these issues fixed(5GHz network and Bluetooth). This would probably be my last HP purchase Spoiler (Highlight to read)  .

I want to upgrade my home network to support HD streaming over Wifi. I am considering getting an 802.11ac router and replacing my laptops Wifi network card with one that supports the new Wifi 802.11ac standard.

On my home network I want to connect a TV set top box to the router over Cat6 but my laptop is the only device that will be connecting over Wifi. I have a Dell Inspiron 7520 laptop. It has an Intel Centrino Wireless-N 2230 Wifi card which supports dual stream but only one band: 2.4Ghz.

It looks like my laptop only has two internal antenna cables and for this reason I am thinking I cannot avail of triple stream Wifi-N 450Mb/s + 450Mb/s on a simultaneous dual band N900 router. I am stuck with a theoretical max of 300Mb/s on 2.4Ghz under Wifi-N and/or 866Mb/s on 5Ghz under Wifi-AC.

Here are my questions:

1. If I get a simultaneous dual band router can my laptop stream an HD movie on the 5Ghz band and at the same time download say a Youtube video on the 2.4Ghz band? I ask that because I'd like to get a such a router and preserve every ounce of bandwidth on its 5Ghz band for streaming movies from the set top box to my laptop... not have to share it for web browsing needs.

2. Would it be a better solution, or even possible, to install a third internal antenna in my laptop and get a triple stream 802.11n class Wifi card (such as the Intel Centrino Ultimate-N 6300) and Wifi-N Class router OR should I buy an 802.11ac router and get the better bandwidth it offers... A:Can my Laptop simultaneously connect to a 2.4Ghz & 5Ghz Wifi network?

You can stream HD movies fine at 150Mbps or even less but it depends on how much of the bandwidth is being used by your neighbors. This can be a big problem in some areas. You won't be able to use both frequency's at once.

Finding the best clean channels to use are what matters most on 2.4 GHz, channel bonding comes in handy sometimes but works best when the channels are mostly clear.

5Ghz is better in this respect because hardly anyone is using it so you tend to get all the bandwidth to yourself but the drawback with 5GHz frequency is that it won't go through walls worth a darn so it's really only useful for open area's outdoors or for large rooms.

I'm running the Asus AC66U router and the Asus PCI-e AC66 NIC which usually runs about 877.5-1.1 Gb. I can stream multiple YouTube video's while watching movies although I could also do this using the 2.4GHz frequency at 300Mbps.

Hey there forum.

I'd like to start off by saying this is in fact my first post, and I do not know where else to turn.

I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate on a 64 bit machine.

A couple of days ago, I was using AVG free 2012 as my virus protection software.

I was on my computer, and all of a sudden a warning for a virus (I can't remember correctly, but I think it was a Trojan of some sort). I tried to delete it, and it said no infections were found. I thought that was a good thing. Well, a couple minutes later it happens again...so I tried to get rid of it again. For the record, I believe it might have been a zip file that I downloaded off the internet that might have got me this virus.

Then I used MBAM which found nothing, and I started to believe it was nothing. After a couple more times though, I got worried. I got online and bought Norton 360 Premier Edition 5.0 and started scanning.

The scans came up with nothing, but then I noticed that in the corner it started giving me two notifications. One notification was saying a virus (I believe a trojan backdoor 2 or something like that?) was blocked, and that my computer was safe. The other one was saying that a different virus (I think a TDSS? I'm terrible with names...) required immediate manual removal. I followed Nortons instructions, which led me to download their FixTDSS program, which found absolutely nothing. So I did some research, and found Kasperskys TDSSKiller, also to no avail. However, when I ran i... Read more

A:MBAM finds Trojan.Agent but cannot remove it. Norton finds nothing.

I have some extra stuff to add. I Forgot to mention that even before I stupidly ran combofix, all my restore points were already deleted. Also, I just tried Norton Power Eraser and it said that it found no infections either.

Today I received a desktop with Windows XP Media Edition Version 2002, SP3 with a high level of pollution. MBAM ran and found a multitude of issues that have apparently been resolved. The remaining item is TROJAN.TDSS. MBAM finds it and deletes / quarantines it. However, each time I restart the system (as instructed by MBAM) and then run MBAM again, the TROJAN.TDSS is back. While I'm unclear on the effect of this trojan, it remains on the system. Eventually, it will disable McAfee Security Center from receipt of updates and performance degrades (I presume some internet activity is running behind the scenes). After running MBAM a few times, occasionally, McAfee comes back to life and will run a scan of the system. It finds nothing.Anyway, again, I'm new to the process and system and look forward to hearing from you guys on what I should do to properly enlist your help.

A:8/4: MBAM finds TROJAN.TDSS repeatedly. McAfee finds nothing.

There's this white vertical band in the middle of my laptop screen V3-574G-77P6.  It doesn't appear when I take a "screenshot" so I suppose the white band is on the LCD screen itself. I googled and found that I share the same case with this guy owning an Acer Aspire 7540G laptop.    http://www.tomsguide.com/forum/70068-35-acer-aspire-7540g-strange-lines-screen Anyone here knows what could cause this?
