Network activity taskbar icon...

Q: Network activity taskbar icon...

OK, I know I'm little nuts... aren't we all?... but this has been bugging me since I installed Vista and maybe you guys know if there's anything I can do about it.

It's the network activity icon near the clock... I much prefer to know the exact activity of my PC and the internet/network PC.... in WinXP this icon would flash in tune with which computer was doing the "talking". This helped me many times figure out if it was an issue on my end or on the internet end depending on how the lights would flash. Not exact, but I used it as a quick guide.

...but in Vista, the icon seems to just have a simple animation that repeats over and over (I've turned on "enable activity animation).

The icon has gone from something usefull (telling me which computer was sending data... to just being a simple animation that only animates when there's overall network activity.

So.... anyway if getting the older more acurate activity animation back?... or would this require a third party download now?

Thanks for any tips,

Preferred Solution: Network activity taskbar icon...

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Network activity taskbar icon...

Hi Teknomedic,

Yeah, that bugged me to. The most accurate way to view network activity it to use Task Manager. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc and click on the Networking tab in Task Manager.

You might be able to find a Windows Sidebar Gadget for it to.

Hope this helps,

Could anyone tell me of a firewall (free or paid) that has a taskbar icon that turns to flickering lights whenever internet activity takes place.  I use Windows 7 Pro and would really appreciate anyone letting me know of such a firewall.
I have XP on a second older computer with ZoneAlarm Pro and I love how ZoneAlarm's little 'Z' in the taskbar changes to flickering lights to let you know when there's internet activity.  I have no idea why the company decided to remove this wonderful feature from later versions of the program.  This feature is invaluable for letting me know if there is NO activity where there SHOULD BE ... or if there IS activity when there SHOULDN'T be.
I found a small utility call 'LanLights' that put an activity light in the taskbar, but what I really want is a firewall that has that feature built-in as part of the program.

ever since my last factory restore my network icon shows i am in a local access only but i have access to the web, like right now i am on this forum but my computer says i only have access to the internal network. i asked this question in the newsgroup and they said to make sure the services for the network were put down as automatic and that they were started, this is the reply i got:

Double check to make sure that you have the have the Services "Network
Connections", "Network List Service", "Network Location Awareness", and
"Network Store Interface Service" set to Started and Automatic. If these
are not, then it can cause the Network icon to not function properly.

Hope this helps,

well he was partially right, there was something not running and one of them was manual. but it still does the same thing, hope someone can help me. also it seems to occur mostly when my aircard is connected, it is pcmcia btw. it is from t-mobile and i disabled the wifi antenna on the air card since my laptop already has one and it (aircard wifi) is being a pain because it is trying to connect even tho my laptop antenna is connected, which it's why it is disabled.

edit: my apology i wasn't aware that the newsgroup and forum where interconnected but the issue is still not fixed, hope someone else has an idea

Are these Windows 7 tweaks possible without using 3rd party software:

1. Right click on taskbar icon shows a standard windows menu instead of Jump list?

2. Hide the "Show desktop" button at the end of the taskbar?

3. Fix scrolling in Windows Explorer? Something to replace FlashWheel / KatMouse.

4. Blinking network activity icon that indicates if your network is active or not? Something to replace Network Activity Indicator.

I would like to replace 7+ Taskbar Tweaker 5.0, KatMouse 7 and Network Activity Indicator 1.7. Are these safe to use?

Any help is much appreciated!

Hi all,

This question is specifically for users of Toshiba Portege Z30s. Mine doesn't show a network icon in the taskbar so I was wondering if another Toshiba app is supposed to manage the network. Also, nothing happens when I go to Control Panel - Network and Internet - Connect to a Network.
Just wondering if other Z30 users are facing the same issue.

Thank you.

I have two computers that I want run on a wireless network. They are a Sony VAIO (laptop) and a desktop. Both are running Windows 7 Professional.

My cable modem is a Motorola Surfboard SBG6580 (combination modem and router) and my network adapter device is a MediaLink-N USB 2.0 Adapter.

The modem is working and I can get email and web sites. Also, the Sony laptop is seeing it and can also get email and web sites so it appears that the modem is working. Motorola said that the modem and router are both OK.

The problem is with the network icon on the lower taskbar. There is none on the desktop but the laptop does have one. Motorola said that there is an icon somewhere on the desktop computer but did not know how to find it. They called it a "cell phone signal bar". It is an icon with five vertical bars that start out on the left side (short) and end on the right side (long).

I did a Google search for "cell phone signal bar" and did not have much luck. Most of the responses had to do with cell phones and none of the hits addressed this problem.

Is there another name for this icon?

It has run every day since I installed the modem but is not working today

Any suggestions on how to recover this icon? .

everything was working fine earlier today. I was playing GTA V online so I was definitely connected. when I exited the game, the network icon on the taskbar was gone. if I open the Notification Center and click network from there no available networks show up. in my settings, the network icon is toggled on. something really bizarre is that before signing in, if I click on the network icon at the bottom of the screen, all the available networks show up, but if I try clicking one, it takes forever to connect and then tells me my access is limited. this is really frustrating as I've spent the last 3 hours looking on my phone for solutions, none of which have worked. any response would be greatly appreciated

I also thought I'd mention that under Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center there is a heading titled "Unknown" and under it read "the dependency service or group failed to start"

A:Can't connect to networks. Network icon on taskbar missing.

Try clicking on Start then on the Power button and choose Restart. A full restart from cold is often a quick cure for 'odd' problems like this. A 'shut down' may not be sufficient if 'fast start up' is enabled (which it is by default).

After I updated to the latest Windows 10 "upgrade" (Build 1511, 10586) released yesterday thru Windows Update, my system shows only the Wi-Fi icon on Taskbar instead of the Ethernet Network icon which it used to display earlier. I have a wired broadband connection, and keep my Wi-Fi Adapter settings "Disabled". Yet, the icon shows the Aeroplane mode of Wi-Fi icon on Taskbar, instead of the Network icon it used to display before this update. At times my wired BB connection tends to become unstable, so I need to keep track if the connection is down, before I do some critical activity on Internet, like large download (which I may be unable to Resume), or Netbanking or online shopping, etc.
How do I get the Network icon instead of the Wi-Fi icon on the Taskbar in the new Build 1511 ?

Hey all, my girlfriend is running Win 7 Home... she has always had the default Windows speaker "volume" icon down on her task bar by her clock. She uses it all the time to switch between her speakers and her headset, where she right clicks on the icon and selects "playback devices" and then changes between her soundcard/speakers and her usb headset.

Anyway, it disappeared last night.

Now open Taskbar, click on the "customize" link, get the window to select which icons appear... on the speaker "volume" icon under behaviors, it is set to "show icon and notifications"...

Then at the bottom click the link for "turn system icons on or off" and on that window, the icon is greyed out and set to OFF and it can not be changed to ON.

She's been bugging the heck out of me ever since to fix it.

We have no idea what changed it, or how it got changed.... we just know its been there and she's used it, for the past two years, and now its suddenly not there.

This is curious but not particularly serious, just irritating.
On start-up in Windows XP Home Edition if I try to access anything in the task bar, the hour-glass appears and stays for about 2 minutes. I can access programmes on the desktop, but nothing on the taskbar, including the Start button, until the hourglass eventually disappears.

I've checked what programmes are loaded on startup using StartupCop and there don't appear to be any rogues, and have got the latest edition of Adaware6, Spy Doctor, and Spyware blaster.
I’ve just run a full virus scan, found some Trojans and deleted them and emptied the recycle folder. All seems normal in the HJT log. Is there anything that might cause this delay?

I noticed something odd when I examined my taskbar menu icons today. I found a taskbar icon linked to a program called proxycheck.exe. In curiosity I googled it, and most of the links returned with a confirmation for a trojan or backdoor virus. Naturally, this is very worrying and I decided to check in with a website I trust.

What I've done so far is run rkill, then followed up with an ESET Online Scan, Malwarebytes Anti-malware, and a Super Anti-Spyware scan.

So far all of these have returned with no positives as of yet, however, being paranoid I'm not entirely convinced that if there is or isn't anything on my computer. This is where I come to you bleeping computers, please ease my mind on this subject. I'm sorry if this is not the most descriptive post possible, but I've reported everything I've found related to the issue that is relevant to me. Thank you in advance.

P.S.: I should of included this in the original post but I forgot. I took a picture of what is causing me worry, since I do not know the origin of this file or how it appeared in my hidden icons. I enabled it to show when it would activate on my end, however, as of now, I have not seen anything. Thank you again for your help in the future.

Hello, last xp sp2 install I had, when I installed office xp (and language support tools like japanese and the "language bar"?) my taskbar suddenly shows double activity fields (active program buttons), as if I could have chosen it twice in add taskbar (that's the name in english right?) if there were such an option.

it's probably related to the "language bar" because now with a fresh xp install running for a month I installed xp and the language tools and reboot and I have double activity fields on the taskbar.

could this go away?, don't remember how it ended last time, might have gone away after I disabled language bar but I'd like to use it even if that may solve it

might it have something to do with the office installation being english, adding some windows update for taskbar tossed along with it's language bar routines and then because activity field may be named differently even in system in swedish xp install and english (like my office install) so it wants both "aktivitetsfältet" and "activity field"?.. just an uneducated guess.

Thanks in advance.

I'm having a lot of fun with my new Vaio, but one thing that annoys me is that there are no visible lights for my DVDRoms. I have two DVDRoms (one is RW) and I can't see or hear when they are running. I thought I had seen a simple program out there that would place an activity light on the taskbar for CDRoms with no visible light, but now I can't find it. Does anyone know where I might find it, I would just like to see when my DVDRoms are running, a simple set of lights on my taskbar would be great.
