I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi,

Welcome to TSF!!

I don' have any experience with Acronis drive tool. However, you said that the xp disk and your livecd aren't booting. This would leave me to believe that there is a problem with the drive itself. Has anything booted up since you used the Acronis tool? Are disks spinning up and then spinning down, or any other problems similar to that?

Microsoft staffers please jump in on this too, as I am at a loss for ideas on this one.

Cheers!

Hi All, I got my P72 with 2x1TB NVMe and 128 GB RAM with Windows 10.  I am wondering if someone has tried to install CentOS 7.6 on P72. I read somewhere about ThunderBolt BIOS corruption so I am reluctant to be the firstone to try it out and brick my machine. Ideally, I would like to have dual boot for Windows and Linux or I can simply take out the Windows NVMe and replace that with a new NVMe and install CentOS 7.6. I need that to run multiple VMs for software demo purposes using CentOS. If there is someone who has successfully installed CentOS 7.6 on P72, please let me know your experience or tips.  Thanks

A:redhat linux CRASHED HELP!

Is it Linux that is telling you this? Looks more like BIOS messages to me.

First thing to try is clearing the CMOS memory. There is a jumper for this on the motherboard.

Boot up with the cleared CMOS and enter BIOS setup. Load failsafe defaults and see if you can boot. Later on you can try loading factory or optimised defaults.

PS

It seemed to me that April was the last month where support would be available for RedHat Linux 9 ( support for previous versions having been dropped since last year I believe ).

If upon installing RedHat 9, I create a new account for RedHat network, I can still get updates via up2date ( if the account type is set to "demo" ).

I'm not complaining or anything as I find up2date to be a very usefull tool & the longer I can get it to work the better.:grinthumb

Am I missing something here ? I would've guessed that dropping for RedHat Linux support meant that no newer custom packages from RedHat would be available for RHL users who do not pay a subscription.

Yeah, I'm sure those newer ATA controllers aren't supported by the
older kernel (2.4.7) in RedHat 7.2. Specifically:

If you have a free partition, then you can install XP. Many people do that. Others just use a virtual machine and run RedHat inside XP at the same time as XP is running. You could also use the Linux version of VirtualBox to run XP inside RedHat.

There are all kinds of possibilities.

Hai All,

I have a new Toshiba A-205 loaded with Vista (32-bit OS). I am trying to dual boot this system with an older version of linux that does not recognize the hard drive due to SATA drive that my new system has. I have

Intel(R) ICH8M SATA AHCI controller -2829 for the hard drive and
Intel(R) ICH8M Ultra ATA storage controller -2850 (I am not sure if this information is neeeded)

In referring to linux forms, it is understood that I will need the drivers for this which can be installed when booting OR change the BIOS setting under SATA to "legacy mode". I had no luck in having any of these done successfully.

Does any one have any experiences in working around with the problem of VISTA + SATA drive.

Please let me know of any possible solutions.

Thank you all for the help.

From the looks of it, in order to run Centos, if you have a Kaby Lake (seventh generation CPU), you need Centos 7 -- the older versions do not support the newest Intel processor platform.
Your Probook uses a much older CPU -- which is why the older Centos version works.

Until very recently I took Speccy reports as gospel, now there is a question in my mind. There are four hard drives in my desktop - one has Win 7, my software and a fair bit of room for data on it, two are purely for data, and the fourth has Linux Mint installed. This all started when I looked at the SMART characteristics on an elderly (12 year old) laptop running Linux and the disc report showed the HD was in pre-fail condition. This led me to check the drives on my desktop.

The full Speccy report via Windows dated August 3rd -

http://speccy.piriform.com/results/jaof4JF0FrJQH4mynvHdXrR

Since Windows cannot see a Linux drive I went into Linux and ran the SMART characteristics and the report was dramatically different. This image shows a combined screenshot of the SMART characteristics of my 1TB C:\ drive, the linux image was taken today after I worked out how to do a screenshot.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/rua1bngwbyjrg4r/Speccy%20and%20Linux%20SMART%20reports.jpg?dl=0

My concern is that two software tests on the same drive can show such different results - why ?  And which can I trust ?  According to Speccy, at least three of my drives are A-OK, according to the Linux test I should hasten round to my supplier for four new drives. Anybody got an explanation ?

Yes, I know there are other tests that can be applied to hard drives, but these two tests are a sort of first port of call.

I had a disk that said it had an "imminent failure impending" but smart turned back with zero errors.

have you tried running long and short DST tests on them? if either of those fail I'd replace the drive(s) it has failed on.

The SMART It's fairly reliable, but it doesn't cover all of the types of failure modes a drive can have.

One problem with SMART is that it only tells you when a disk has had a problem in the past. This can help you to determine if a disk is going to die on you and allow you to replace the disk if a threshold is reached

The tests i trust are the Long generic DST test and the Short Generic DST test.
Hopefully that was informative to your situation.

The assortment of modern malicious programs for devices that run on Linux is extremely wide. One of the most widespread Trojans for this OS is Linux.Hajime, several loaders of which are detected only by the Dr.Web Anti-virus.

Virus analysts have been familiar with Trojans of the Linux.Hajime family since 2016. These are network worms for Linux distributed over the Telnet protocol. After obtaining a password via a brute-force attack and logging on to a device successfully, a malicious module saves a loader written in the Assembler language. Then, the malicious program connects the infected device to a decentralized P2P botnet. Linux.Hajime can infect devices with the ARM, MIPS, and MIPSEL architectures. The Trojan loaders, written in the Assembler language, are not detected by modern anti-viruses, except for the loader for ARM devices, which was described in detail by one anti-virus company in a research report.

In addition to the loader for ARM devices, similar modules for devices with the MIPS and MIPSEL architectures have been distributed ?in the wild? for over six months already. The first of them is Linux.DownLoader.506 and the second is Linux.DownLoader.356. At the moment this article was being written, only Dr.Web products were able to detect both these worms. Moreover, Doctor Web virus analysts have found that, in addition to using Trojan loaders, cybercriminals are infecting devices using standard utilities?for example, they are downloading Linux.Hajime via w... Linux 2.6.9-1.681_FC3 on hda. When I try to install the 2nd system on hdb the boot loader overwrites the MBR on hda. I am lost as to how to get around this. I am not currently nor do I plan to run Windows. I am reading info pages on Grub and Parted, but I feel a little overwhelmed and could use a little guidence. I would appreciate any help to get me pointed in the right direction. Thanks,

A:2nd linux install overwrites MBR of 1st linux install

What version are you installing as the second Linux?

All Linux installs ask you where to install the bootloader. You may have to choose some advanced install method if it doesn't for you.

Just tell it not to install a bootloader at all or don't put in the hda MBR. It usually gives you a choice between the MBR and the Linux parition IIRC. Just put the second instance onto the new Linux partition.

After that edit the original bootloader's configuration so you can boot the second Linux instance.

You could also use a common boot partition for both of your Linux installs but that would take some more tinkering.

I do monitor the hard drive temperature, which does stay cool enough, in the seventies up to about 80* F.
Or can this be caused by mixed partitioning methods, since the new way is now align to MiB, and not align to cylinder as it was. I used the GParted tool to create and change partitions when it was set as default to align to cylinder, but then I recently used both my Vista Disk Manager, and the newer version of GParted to re-size some of the partitions, which both now use that align to MiB method by default, which often has near 1 MB gaps between partitions then.

Hi there

If any of you are installing some LINUX distros as VM's I recommend if you decide on CENTOS 7 to install YUMEX - a graphical package manager.

Add the nux-dextop repo to your repositories -- this is a Windows Forum so I won't get into the mechanics of this here --google for it if you are stuck. This will give you all the multi-media stuff such as VLC etc.

Makes installing software on CENTOS 7 like a breeze - does all the checking for requisites and other dependencies.

(Wish Windows had an equivalent).

Add of course the EPEL one as well.

Don't forget also to add package ntfs-3g to read and write Windows file systems. (Fat 32 is already installed by default but if you want to access external Windows / NTFS USB HDD's for example formatted with NTFS).

Have fun

IMO CENTOS 7 is the most stable Linux package available for home users -- based 100% on RED HAT SERVER which is used hugely in the commercial world. CENTOS is now 100% supported by RED HAT and 100% comapatible with RED HAT Enterprise server (so won't always have the latest and greatest stuff - but 100% STABLE).

Use KDE or GNOME if you want a "Windows like interface" but also works headless with CLI too. Great for a NAS server. PLEX runs great on it.

The only drawback is if you run it Native - WIFI is "Iffy" -- INTEL USB WIFI adapters work as does the small Netgear (Aka Belkin 300N micro adapter) which might be sufficient - otherwise difficult to find WIFI adap... Read more

Windows has. Not a graphical user interface but other than that, a very practical and easy to use package management system OneGet. I just reinstalled build 14271 tonight, installed all my software silently on the background with one command, without a need to click a "Next" or "Continue" or "Would you like to install this software, too?" button once. One command, hit Enter and go get coffee while all your software installs.

An example, a silent install on the background without any whatsoever PUPs, clicks or selections, to install a bunch of software with one command using PowerShell OneGet in Windows 10:

Code:
Install-Package VLC, GoogleChrome, Opera, Firefox, 7zip, Notepadplusplus, Skype, SkypeForBusiness, Office365Business, AdobeReader, Adobe-Creative-Cloud, Paint.net, Malwarebytes, Teamviewer, Steam, Rufus -Force

I have Windows XP installed as the master drive (hda) and Mandriva 10.2 Linux on the slave drive (hdb). I want to physically remove the WinXP hard drive from my computer and make Linux the only drive. I boot up the computer using LILO, which is installed on hda. So how do I do all of this without messing up the bootloader settings?

A:Changing Linux on Slave Drive to Master Drive

First, save the existing /etc/lilo.conf; cp /etc/lilo.conf /etc/lilo.0901705.conf

Second, read manpage re mkbootdisk. you may need this to recover the as-is configuration

Third, I found it a lot safer to work out my LILO configuration using a floppy boot disk rather than my hard disk. To do this, you must replace the boot=/dev/hda with boot=/dev/fd0 in the lilo.conf file. That way, if I messed up any of the configuration in my lilo.conf file, I could take out the boot disk and boot into Linux as before. Once I was happy everything booted fine using the floppy disk, I then changed my lilo.conf back to use boot=/dev/hda and ran /sbin/lilo a final time to upload my changes.

man 8 lilo explains the program options
man 5 lilo.conf explains each line in the conf file

before you make changes, issue the following as documentation
...mount
later, this command will show /dev/hda? on / type ext2 (r/w)
when you're successful

Your existing LILO config should be at /etc/lilo.conf and will contain
items like:
boot = /dev/hdb? (first HD, some partition number suffix)
... bunch of stuff best left alone
image = ... whatever it says
.label = ... your lilo prompt at boot time
.root = ... /dev/hdb? (note it matches line 1)
other = /dev/hda1 (first HD, 1 partition)
.label = WinXP (the lilo prompt for XP)
.table = /dev/hda

delete the lines from OTHER to the bottom,
change hdb? to hda? (ie the same partition number, just different drive)
save ... Read more

Hello, Last week i purchased a Pavilion 510-P052il desktop. I would like to dual boot both Windows 10 and CentOS 7. However i am unable to install CentOS 7. I installed Windows 10 first after disabling secure boot option in the UEFI. However UEFI was enabled. Once i boot from the bootable USB containing CentOS 7, i am unable to proceed with the installation. If i disable UEFI, then i cannot boot  into Windows 10 and CentOS 7 USB either. Please suggest a solution. Thanks,Samrat.
