W8.1 tethering to mobile - problems with wifi, USB, BT

Q: W8.1 tethering to mobile - problems with wifi, USB, BT

Having real trouble with tethering wifi. I have new Samsung Galaxy Note 4 (Android 4.4) which I am trying to tether to a new Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro. Since I have tried lots of stuff without success, I've replicated my testing across two computers (the other a Lenovo X240) and also tried both with my work phone, which is an iPhone 6+, for comparison and to hopefully help someone smart come up with a diagnosis.
Having tried 2 x laptops (Yoga, X240 both running Windows 8.1 64-bit) with 2 x phones, in each case trying both wifi tether and USB tether, I can report the following:
X240, iPhone, wifi - OK
X240, iPhone, USB - OK
X240, Note 4, wifi - "Can't connect to this network"
X240, Note 4, USB - OK
YOGA, iPhone, wifi - "Can't connect to this network"
YOGA, iPhone, USB - (no response at all - no error, no message, no connection)
YOGA, Note 4, wifi - "Can't connect to this network"
YOGA, Note 4, USB - OK
As a sidebar, I also tried Bluetooth connection on the Yoga - literally nothing. I was able to pair the devices, the Android phone reported "you are sharing the internet over Bluetooth" (but I think that's only because it was paired and the share mode was turned on) - but not a peep, not a failure message or an error, and certainly no internet connection!
I suppose the 'good news', since my main goal here is to get online on the Yoga laptop using my Note 4 for internet access, is that it works with the USB connection - so worst case I have to carry a wire around with me. However it really irks me that this is necessary!!
Can anyone suggest what I need to do to get the wifi tether working? I saw a post earlier today about how to manually set up access by manually configuring an ad-hoc AP in Windows... don't know enough to know whether or not this is how a phone configures wifi to tether... it probably does... but we're getting (a) past my level of competence (b) beyond what should be needed to make something so "simple" work!!
Thanks in advance,
Alastair

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Okay, so short story time.

A while back I had to reformat R2D2 (lappy number two, as described in profile. If you're unable to read the stats, tell me and I'll post them here.) because I couldn't decide on any virus software and a virus basically killed it. Before that, I was able to tether my internet from my Motorola Droid, using EasyTether (what I use on this laptop: Ninja Spy Lappy). I don't remember how exactly I got it to work last time, though. And now, after reformatting it and getting it all running, it won't let me install EasyTether. There's a certain Verizon program that is required to be installed in order for it to work, so I did that.

The error message that displays when I try to install the program says I need to install Vista service pack 1 or higher. I've connected to the internet using a different connection and tried downloading it online. It led me to update my system, but after all was said and done, it still gives me the same error. What the blast! Do I need to install service pack 2 or something? Surely I don't have the wrong bit version of the EasyTether installer.

See, somehow my laptop wasn't living up to it's full potential in it's "past life". The guy who gave me the laptop had some other cheapo version of Vista on it, and it was being used as a 32bit, even though it's a 64bit computer. (Oh gosh, bear with my poor tech jargon.) So after my dad reformatted it for me, he ordere... Read more

For quite a while now I have been tethering using the 3G connection on my Android phone and the App PDANet. It wasn't idea, but it was my best option. Often times I would connect my phone to the computer, and everything would work fine for a few minutes and then the speed would start to get slower and slower until I was basically dealing with dialup speeds. This has basically been the norm for quite some time, ever since I started using more data by playing World of Warcraft when tethering. Since the speed seemed to also be slow when just using my phone, whether it be the browser or watching videos, etc. then I just assumed that it was something that Verizon was doing; throttling my usage since I'm using so much data.

Well now all of a sudden, 4G is available at my house. I hoped this would solve my problems. In a way it did, but it has also just presented new ones. Now when I tether my phone to the computer, the speed is great, but again only for a short time, maybe 30 seconds, maybe 10 minutes, but eventually the internet seems to sort of "lock up". It's hard to explain. It clearly isn't a problem with the speed. It isn't slowing down. In fact if I'm running a program, like a Java program such as a fantasy football draft or a chat room or something then that will just continue to work fine for as long as I want it to, but if I try to open a new tab or start doing something else then I just get a "Waiting for <site name>&q... I'm confused. All laptops today (especially Windows 8) ALL come with WIFI cards. So connecting to a "wireless" network is as easy as locating, connecting, and entering a password if one is necessary.

Then there is "cellular" Wireless that are provided by several companies. These are not as fast but commonly used by business professionals when needed. Originally it was a USB device that you connect to the computer but now they sell devices that are basically a hot spot (much like an Access Point) or/and phones now too can be a hot spot.

Am I not understanding you correctly?

Hello there just i want to have a WiFi connection on my mobile through my PC which dosent have a WiFi and i was not using a modem or router also, the PC was directly connected to internet via a direct cable ( Its a cable internet )
from outside to direct PC. Can i use a WiFi nano installed on my PC and use the connection on my mobile.
please explain how to use WiFi on my mobile with my PC internet.
Thanks

A:wifi with pc to mobile

If you have a wireless adapter on your PC (WiFi-Nano in your case), you should be able to connect your PC and mobile over wireless.

How you do this depends on your phone. For example, if it is an Android, you should be able to go to Settings > Wireless & Networking > Wireless > Tethering & portable hotpost (or something like this). Once the mobile is set up, your PC should be able to find the new wireless access point and connect to it.

We should be able to better help you if we understand more about what you are trying to do. Are you trying to share your mobile's internet access with your PC, access pictures on the phone, or something else?

I have a strange problem with my wifi at home.

I have 3 devices which connect to the router, a laptop, a notebook and a mobile phone.

This past week I've found that the phone won't connect unless the notebook is also connected (the laptop is almost always online).

I can't work out why, but unfortunately the router is one of those which is custom set by the ISP and I can't re-configure it. FWIW it's an Arris.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions

I just wonder, can someone sniff your browsing information, from your phone/tablet if you are only using mobile network from your cellular carrier? Is basically managing your accounts from 4G mobile network safer than using Wifi?

A:Is mobile network safer than Wifi?

Only your ISP can sniff that traffic unless you have malware installed on your device.

That said, a secured private wifi network is just as secure as the only weak point is your ISP. Public wifi access is inherently insecure.

You should never use public wifi for anything of importance.

Okay, so I've looked through the forums and I couldn't find anything related to my issue here. I apologize in advance if this question has already been answered.

Here is my setup. I'm running windows XP sp3 and my main internet connection is a Sprint Wireless Aircard (Sierra Compass 597u). I also have a Linksys wireless G router with a Linksys print server connected to a Dell AIO 962 printer.

The print server is set up properly, the wireless network is set up properly, when I connect to the wireless router on my laptop, or my coworkers laptop, we can print fine, no problems.

However, the network connection that the router is connected to is terribly slow. I would like to be be able to be connected to my aircard for my internet access and connected to the wireless for local only (I.E. the print server) but it doesn't seem to be working properly.

I can connect to both the sprint internet and the wireless simultaneously, but I still can't print unless I disconnect the sprint connection first (and sometimes I then have to reset the wifi connection also). It seems to work ok on my coworkers laptop if I connect his sprint aircard first, and then connect the wireless (He is running Vista, and if I connect the sprint aircard, then the wifi, the wifi will connect local only... however if I dont make sure the wifi is disconnected before connecting to sprint, the sprint connection doesn't work right, so I can't get this setup to be persistent)

Not a good idea to put your email address in posts unless you enjoy bots sending you all kind of spam email.

What you are trying to do is called Tethering. Most cell phone providers do have this option but I believe technically you have to pay for it. There are hacks around it though. I know how to do it on my Palm not sure about windows mobile.
I would google search for: htc touch tethering
You will get lots of hits.

A:How to share a mobile broadband dongle over WiFi?

Some wireless vendors inhibit ICS when you're using their dongle, perhaps that's the issue?

You should consider a 3G router which allows you to connect that device directly to the router and share the connection.

What's the ISP and the EXACT make/model of the broadband dongle?

T-Mobile's tech support can't seem to figure out my problem so I'm hoping someone here can help.

I just purchased a T-Mobile hotspot (ZTE) yesterday. It can connect to the T-Mobile network and appears to be working fine. My Wii can connect wirelessly to the the hotspot, but my laptop can only connect to the internet through the USB cord (which it's really not supposed to, because that's supposed to be for charging the device). When I try to connect via wifi to my hotspot, my computer can detect the network. However, after I immediately enter my password, it says that it cannot connect. When I click "Diagnose the problem" it says there was a timeout.

I have Windows Vista and one of the tech support people mentioned that Windows Vista sometimes has problems connecting with handshake devices (but he didn't know how to fix it). Another person said I should have about 20 seconds to type in my password, so it shouldn't be timing out so quickly. Is it something with my computer? I have a Compaq Presario CQ60. I had this same problem when I tried to connect to a friend's hotspot a couple weeks ago (I don't remember if it was also T-Mobile or another provider, though).

Thanks

Honestly this has bee annoying me for a very long time. I have unreliable home internet but with Windows 8 connecting to my phone is always a chore.

1. there is no option to refresh wifi networks. I'm sure it does this automatically, but there really needs to be a way to do this manually. I'm aware that this can't really be changed so lets move on.

2. "Connect to hidden network" option sometimes disappears. I don't know where it goes or why, but it goes away when I need it most.

3. Windows 8 cannot see my phone's Wifi hotspot. Once in a blue moon it will see and it will connect fine if I use "Connect to hidden network" but in order to connect again I have to go through "connect to hidden network" EVERY TIME, causing me to have multiple listings for my hotspot.

The first two are major pains, but most importantly how the hell do i fix #3? Asus book flip TP500LN and Blackberry Z30.

can someone advise how to connect TP-Link TL-WR841ND to Huawei Mobile Wifi E5776?
Huawei Mobile Wifi E5776 is a 4G LTE connection, however it does not get 4G connection in all rooms.
Hence I have kept it in a fixed location where the 4G connection is excellent.
However due to this, I cannot get receive good signal strength in all the rooms.
I have an old TP-Link TL-WR841ND and would like to know if I can use it to connect to Huawei Mobile Wifi E5776 device to receive signals from Huawei Mobile Wifi E5776 to increase signal strength to cover all rooms.
I read that I can use TP-Link TL-WR841ND as a repeater and use it, but it says to install OpenWrt and do lot of things..... I am not sure of all these things..... wud appreciate if someone can help me with this issue?

I read a bunch of previous threads on this, but none really fit my problem. A long story here, but for the time being I am having to use my mobile data connection for internet access. When I try to connect to the USB tethering, I have to go in to the adapter settings, and enable, and disable, and re-enable the adapter about 4 times before it recognizes the USB. When trying to connect to a wifi, it's click connect on the phone connection (which shows up fine), wait until it says not connected, and click connect again, about 4 or 5 times. Using either the USB or wifi it will connect eventually, I have tried 3 different phones, and it's the same thing on all three. So I would think the problem is in my 8.1.

The last time my internet went out, and I tried to use the mobile wifi (which I've had saved on my pc for over a year), all I had to do was turn the phone hotspot on, and the pc connected immediately within 2 to 3 seconds, now it's taking almost 2 minutes every time no matter which type connection I use.

I have made sure every thing on the pc and the phones are updated. What I don't understand is I connected one time, and it worked perfect, just like any other connection, then the next time, it wouldn't. It's either a hardware, or software problem, I have tried to make sure both are working correctly, and as far as I can find the pc is showing no problems.

Any ideas what could be going on here, or what I might try?

Thanks
Robby

Might help to know specs like computer/adapter/wifi router/phone, etc.

Have you run the troubleshooter when connected?
