A Couple of Technical DSL Question

Q: A Couple of Technical DSL Question

A while back, I asked a DSL provider about the distance betwween my house and the nearest DSL central office, which is about 6 miles away. Here's the partial response I got:

If the form says you qualify then you should be no more than 18,000 feet from the central office in your area. However, that is 18,000 feet in actual line length, not in walking or driving distance from the CO.Click to expand...

Question #1: How many miles is 18,000 feet? I'm sure it's less than 6 miles.
Question #2: Why are the DSL cables so short?

Today, I ordered it anyway from my phone company, and a technician is coming later this week to install it for me.

After it's all hooked up, if it doesn't connect, I'll have to cancel the whole shebang.

I really hope it works cuz I'm getting fed up with this dialup connection on these very crappy voice-grade phone lines.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I used to find Windows Media Player had a useful automatic cleanup option when 5 or more mp3s were found in the library without an actual mp3 file to relate too....

I want to know why now when i have 7 or 10 tracks that have been removed by myself, when i go to play them (forgetting i removed them) do i no longer get the option pop up asking if i would like WMP to cleanup the library!?!?

Can I change my Toshiba Satellite L305D-S5914 built with a AMD Sempron™ 3600+ CPU to a AMD Athlon 64/X2 CPU. Toshiba Tech support tells me that the processor is soldered and built into the motherboard but it is not. Both processors are socket AM2

A:Technical Question

The only hardware upgrade that you can usually make to a laptop is to add more RAM - if it supports adding more.

From what I've read so far, that model laptop comes with the AMD Sempron 3600+ 2.00 GHz processor and supports up to 4 GB of DDR2 PC2-6400(DDR2-800) RAM.

Computer Specs:

I have a client who needs BOTH some PHP and some SSI code in a webpage. The filetype needs to remain as SHTML. I tried making an SHTML page that included PHP, but what happens when I modify the .htaccess file is that one or the other gets done, but not both.

For example, I used this in the .htaccess:

AddType application/x-httpd-php .php .shtml
AddType text/x-server-parsed-html .shtml
DirectoryIndex index.shtml index.php index.html

That does the PHP coding just fine in the shtml file, but not the
<!--#exec cgi="/cgi-bin/Tracking/ax.cgi" --> SSI code
line in the shtml page.

When I switch the first two lines, it does the SSI, but not the PHP.

How can I get it to do both the SSI *and* the PHP?

Thanks

I am using a program (which I didn't write) which creates a database driven website. It was working well, but suddenly, when I try to add new records, I get errors. I have the system on a WIN2000 server, and also mirrored on my WIN98 system at home.

On the WIN2000 server, I get this error message: "ERROR: Multiple-step OLE DB operation generated errors. Check each OLE DB status value, if available. No work was done."

On the WIN98 system, I get this error: "Errors Occurred"

In both cases, the record does get added, but it cannot be edited - only deleted.

Since I couldn't reach the guy who wrote the program I was using, I did some research, and found this page over at Microsoft:

http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q228/9/35.asp

It described this error exactly. It said I needed to upgrade my MDAC and JET versions to make these errors go away. I don't really know what MDAC and JET are, but I found them for download on Microsoft's site.

Using my WIN98 system as the guinea pig, I downloaded and installed MDAC 2.6 and JET 4.0 - the most recent versions of both. Needless to say, it didn't fix the problem.

The only thing that changed on my WIN98 system is that instead of getting the "Errors Occurred" message, I now get the much longer error message that my server returns.

I haven't tried upgrading the server because - well - I'm afraid to touch the server, especially when the fix didn't work on... Read more

I bought a new Compaq Presario laptop, and the specs say it has 256mb of PC2100, (266MHZ) DDR-SDRAM, with a max capacity of 1G. So I went out and bought 1G (2-512mb modules, same specs). When I opened up the memory compartment and removed the memory the laptop came with, it was marked 256mb, DDR, 333 mhz, PC 2700.

My questions:

Are the two types of memory interchangeable?
Can using PC 2700 333 mhz harm the computer if it is meant to run PC2100, 266 mhz?
If I use the PC2100, 266mhz, will my computer run slower?
What should I do?

Hello you smart computer techies!!! I need a little assistance. I hate Norton as it was hogging up my PC. So I uinstalled it (via the norton uninstall) and went out and bought PC-cillin 2005. Greetings, helpful and wonderful people.

I currently have a 2x2gb setup in 2 of my 4 DIMM slots on my motherboard. The timing is 8-8-8-24. The speed is DDR3 @ 1600MHz, and it is a matched pair. They run at 1.65V,

I am looking to expand this memory, but the pair I have picked out to add to the second bank (the remaining two DIMM slots) has differences in the size, voltage and timing. I have tried my best to research this problem before creating a thread but haven't found an answer detailed enough to explain why this would or would not work. Anyways, here are the details on the second pair.

2x4gb, same brand (Crucial). Timing 10-10-10-28. Speed DDR3 @ 1600MHz, matched pair. Running at 1.5V.

The three differences are the size (4gb vs 2gb per module), the timing (CAS latency 10 vs CAS latency 8), and the voltage (1.5V vs 1.65V).

The motherboard can handle all the specs of the possible new pair. Crucial's website confirms compatibility by suggesting this pair with its scan utility.

HOWEVER, my question is: What will happen in my BIOS configuration when I put this new pair in the second bank?
1. What will Dual-Channel, what will not, and why?
2. Will I have to manually reduce the latency of the second pair, or will I have to manually increase the latency of the first pair, in order to make them match? Will this result in a major speed decrease?
3. Will the difference in voltage be modified automatically? To which? (1.65v or 1.5v?)

When I go to my BIOS, I see two hard drives: P0 and P2.
Let's call them as Disk1 and Disk2.

Regularly, I am booting from Disk2.
(By the way, one of the disks is dedicated to operating systems, and the other is dedicated to libraries. I don't know which one is which, since they are identical drives, but as I said regularly I am booting from Disk2).

When I have a boot problem such as "Insert correct media device", I am putting the system repair disc, and (after booting the system repair disc from cd/dvd drive) it gives me the error that "this repair disc is not compatible with your version".
But, when I change the first drive from Disk2 to Disk1 in BIOS, it doesn't give that error and shows me the system repair options.

What does this mean?
Why it is happening like that?
Does it mean that if I remove Disk1 physically or disable it, I can never use any system repair disc?
How can I solve this problem?
What are my options if a system repair disc gives me the "not compatible" error?

A:Technical Boot Question (2 Disks)

It sounds like your boot files are on disk 1, P0, and your OS is on disk 2, P2. You need to have a look in disk management to see whats what. If that is true, you won't be able to boot up to your OS if you remove disk 1.

Got any suggestions on what could be wrong with my memory card when it won't read the data when it's plugged in?
It says "No Data"
The card is official. I've tried other slots. Other mem cards work, tried turning it off and on, etc. We have a hunch that the problem could be that the contacts on the memory card have been misalligned, however there is no damage we can see without taking it apart.
Is it possible to take it apart or are there rivets or anything in the back end of the memory card that would hold it together?
Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Hi there,

I have a question about the "amvo virus" and Combofix...

My goal is to REMOVE this virus and then PREVENT my PC from being infected another time by the same virus...Does ComboFix just remove "amvo" or fixes the problem, protecting my PC "forever" against this virusc ???

If it doesn't, can anyone tell me a good practice for preventing this infection in future? (possibly, something more sophisticated than just disabling the execution of the autorun.ini in every external drive...)

amvo.exe) is a backdoor Trojan that is installed with other malicious files. Backdoor Trojans, IRCBots and Infostealers are very dangerous because they provide a means of accessing a computer system that bypasses security mechanisms and steal sensitive information like passwords, personal and financial data which they send back to the hacker. I understand USB flash drives are composed of two components, the memory part that retains the data and the controller that regulates the writing and retrieval of the data. I alo understand there are different types of the controller components.

Also, I've learned that some machines will see just about any USB flash drive; but, I occasionally see some machines that will recognize one of my flash drives and not the other. I suspect this is because of the different controllers in each of the USB flash drives.

Here's the question: Is there a way to determine which USB flash drives contain which controller components?

The reason I'm asking is that I have two USB flash drives, a 16-Gig and a 32-Gig. The 16- is getting too small and I'm going to retire it in favor of a new 32- or 64-Gig and I don't want to end up with two that have the same controller component and then run into a machine that will see neither.

Hello,

Yesterday morning I restarted my Dell Inspiron 6400 to finish installing an update to my virus protection software (McAfee Plus), and as the computer was shutting down my external HD became disconnected from the laptop. Since then, however, my computer has failed to start. It gets to the very first screen, with the manufacturer's logo and progress bar, then moves to an error page.

On that page, "Windows Boot Manager" informs me that failed to start. "A recent hardware or software change might be the cause." To fix the problem, they recommend I insert my Windows installation disc, follow the repair process, etc.

I do not have this DVD, as it never shipped with my laptop. They recommend, as an alternative, to contact my computer manufacturer. I've done so, and checked through Dell's support site. Their FAQs told me to contact their support department. However, my warranty has also ended. Simply to contact them to find out what my recourse is will cost $49. I'd prefer not to do that unless I know they'll send me some sort of repair DVD.

So, a few questions, more to your experiences than to the software itself:

1. Is it likely that Dell will provide a Windows Vista DVD to a computer past warranty? I doubt it sincerely, but perhaps there's a chance.

2.If that doesn't work, I presume I'll have to buy Vista. Being as I had Home Basic before, would I be able to purchase and use an upgrade disc, or would I have t... Read more

A:Not strictly a technical question: trouble starting Vista

#1 I never use Windows Explorer, and it's probably NOT about to play nice with a 3rd party utility, would be my best guess, if that is the preview panel you are referencing here. I use 1by1 for mp3 playing found here (as well as foobar):

A few questions.

1) If my company has MAK volume license keys, but I install using a Dell Windows 7 OEM disc on a PC, will there be activation/product key problem? In other words, does the Dell OEM disc have any differences compare to say a copy from digital river which i'm guessing can be called 'retail install' version?

2) This question is opposite. If had a Dell OEM key for 64 bit version, but use a win 7 64bit retail disc and try to activate would there be an issue?

Reason I ask all this is i'm trying to plan out a couple of general Win 7 images for my company to be usable to all pc's, including OEM keys and non-OEM.

A:Couple of question about OEM keys and MAKs/VLKs

All Recovery disks are customised by the manufacturer.
The amount of customisation varies from manufacturer to manufacturer, and from model to model, as well as OS to OS.
A Dell Recovery disk is ONLY valid on the PC with which it was shipped (at least in theory)

What you say in your last paragraph makes no sense. An OS deployment will strictly use only ONE type of Key, to reduce the admin overhead, and maintain the manageability.

You cannot used an image with an OEM Key, and the same image with an MAK Key (or vice-versa), as far as I know.

What you could do is an MAK deployment with one image, and an OEM with another - but that nearly doubles the workload.

I asked a question in another thread wanting to know if there were any good free alternatives to programs PCAnywhere or GoToMyPC. Boy did I ever get more than I expected in TeamViewer that EAFiedler suggested.

Now I have a technical question about how TeamViewer works. It connects to remote systems across the internet not by an IP number that I enter but rather by an arbitrary nine-digit number assigned to the system when the program is set up. It connects so quickly that I know it cannot be scanning every IP address on the 'net looking for a TeamViewer connection at every one of them. So, I have deduced that there must be a server out there somewhere that stores TeamViewer information.

Does anyone know enough about this to confirm this and/or explain it to me somewhat?

Next question: What about security? Are there any security issues I should be concerned about, other than the obvious, of course?

My question is, once its released on July 29th, will I be able to get the FREE copy I was originally supposed to get or am I stuck with the technical preview version?

How does Microsoft know I used to have Windows 7?

Also,

Hey Guys,

I have been messing around with Apache from (XAMPP) on my Windows computer. I know that it is not secure, but I am just testing it for right now (for fun).

I am behind a Linksys WRT54g router. I can easily access the apache server from internally (locally), and in order for me to be able to access it externally (external IP in address bar), I have to port forward in my router.

So, I port forwarded port 80 and everything worked fine. I just had a question about this.

Since most internet (HTTP) traffic is served through 80, and I just port forwarded 80 to one computer, how do the other computers on my network still have access to the net. Don't get me wrong, it's awesome that this works, but I would just like to know how. Theoretically, wouldn't all the traffic that is coming through 80 be routed to that one computer?

Can someone explain this to me?

Also, when people use Apache to host sites, do they usually keep the apache ServerName (in httpd.conf) at localhost, or do they change it to a different IP? I would imagine they would keep it at localhost, so what would be the reason for changing that to a different IP?

Thanks!

A:Question about port forwarding port 80 (for apache) and a couple other questions

Anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

I have searched a lot, and found no one that had the same problem. Maybe similar, but not identical. Since I built my PC (very first one I might add) I had no problems like this, but lately, it's been acting crazy. I am just doing my stuff, minding my own business, when all of a sudden, everything stops and is unresponsive for a few seconds. Things work again for maybe 5 seconds, and stuff freezes once more. And it's not always everything, sometimes maybe my internet browser will freeze, maybe an opened folder, maybe a tab in Google Chrome, sometimes 2 things out of 5 running, sometimes a portion of a program, like I can't scroll down, but I can click on things. When audio plays, it starts to repeat like a scratched CD, and things become unresponsive. When I turn off audio, everything runs smoothly either for a couple hours, or a couple of seconds. I scanned my PC for viruses, nothing, scanned for malware, had a few entries which I cleaned, but didn't help, defragmented my PC, which didn't help at all, and I ask you, what may the problem be? I try to avoid formatting, for I suspect (and hope) it's hardware problem. I have 2GB RAM, Asus mobo, which probably causes all the problems like it always does, Geforce 9600 graphics card, AMD athlon x2 dual core. I tried the obvious, just as turning off background programs, checking unnecessary things in processes, and ran out of ideas, so I want to know if there is a known solution to this.

Thank you
Daniel

A:Computer freezes every couple of seconds for a couple of seconds

How long has it been since you took a can of compressed air and blew the dust bunnies out of the heatsink and fans in that case? If you have not done that, this should be the first thing you do. You also need to list all specs.

Hello akkittiekat, and welcome to Vista Forums.

It sounds like you are thinking of "System Restore". It can be accessed with a Vista Install DVD, a repair CD, or the reserved system partition at boot up. It is possible to restore to a point before you created the Admin password, or to a password you remember.

Here are some tutorials to show you how to use "System Restore" in different ways:

System Recovery Options

System Restore - How to

Administrator Account

Reset User Account Password

Create a Recovery Disc
You referred to the Admin password, is this the Admin account created during installation, or the "Hidden Default Administrator" account? This tutorial shows how to enable the Default Hidden Administrator account when there is no other account with Admin privileges available. Once you have enabled this account, you can use it to change the password to your Admin account.

User Account Password - Change from Win RE

Here you have the email I have sent to the Nec Technical Support and below the reply.

Dear Sir:

I am writing to you because my printer does not work with my new computer which uses Windows XP, in my old computer it works perfectly. I have looked for the windows xp drivers but I did not find them. Are you going to release them soon? My printer is a Superscript 660 plus.
Thank you.
REPLY:
Dear NEC customer,
The 660plus is not supported in Windows XP. NEC is no longer developing drivers for the 660plus as NEC is exiting the printer industry. You may want to email again after XP has been offcially released for a few months. We may discover a work around.
Thank you for contacting NEC.
OnLine: http:\\www.nectech.com
E-mail: [email protected]
Phone: 1-800-632-4650
Brad

-After that I can say: I have a printer in the dustbin, NEC has lost a customer in the other "industries" they are not "exiting".-

Please if someone know these drivers I will be pleased....

Thank you.

A:Nec and his Technical Support

Maybe you should have checked all your hardware to see if it was supported by XP. Not everything is and most manufacturers have not written drivers for it yet. Find a generic driver for an NEC printer similar to yours in XP's native drivers and use that. They offered a workaround if they found one so what are you complaining about....do a little research!

I am getting a call from (800) 582-2507 and they say that they are HP employees.  They go on to tell me that my PC is sending error code to HP and they can helpme fix it.  They then point me to the "Administrative Events" in control panel to show me the errors.  At that point I told them that I do not believe they are HP employees and hung up.  I Never called them they called me because of the "errors" that HP is receiving from my PC.  They even claim they know the serial number of my PC. Please confirm that this is a spam.

1. When Small Business Server 2000 is deployed, it automatically sets workstations to use the server as an internet proxy because you would be expected to use the Proxy Server built into SBS 2000. However, in most installations a NAT router is used instead. Unfortunately, SBS2000 will still occasionally set the workstations to use the server as a proxy, preventing access to the internet.

Although this can be manually corrected on each workstation by removing the proxy settings in Internet Explorer, what is the best way to fix this issue permanently?

2. what are the two advantages of using the Google cache: (only 2)

My question is what is the procedures for starting windows with the bootable usb? I know I will need to change the boot sequence first. One I do and it boots from the usb what will I see? I have never done this before, I don't want win 10 to begin a reinstall I just want to get into the system to disable the drivers for deep freeze. Its a real pain in the but to disable deep freeze but faronics will assist with the command lines once I'm in the system. Many thanks in advance.

Hello,

Recently I decided to change my original 256MB RAM to a 512MB RAM, unfortunatly this ending not very successful, so I changed back downto 256MB RAM, unfortunatly after putting back in the original 256MB RAM I got a series of beeps coming from my PC meaning there was an obvious problem with the Memory. Completly forgetting I had handled the RAM incorrectly and resulting in damaging the memory.
After discussing this with a friend of mine he recommended I brought new RAM which I did. I got the correct memory for my PC etc... Arriving today I installed the new 512MB RAM on my PC at home, sadly enough this didnt solve the problem. I am keeping the new memory but it can either be the Graphics Card or the Motherboard, is this true or just a rumour? If anybody could assist me with this problem I would really apriciate it as my patients is growing thin.

Any response would be much apriciated or E-Mail [email protected]

Regards and Best wishes.

Dave Wheeler.

A:Technical Issues with my PC Help please someone.

That sounds like you are not seating the DIMMs properly. They will make a snap noise when they are seated in correctly (as worrying as that might be!).

Either that , or your mobo is damaged. I have seen that before, but generally because the mobo got cracked when the memory was forced in too hard. It does not sound like that in this case. I think you are not seating properly.

I used Original Windows, curent confirgurationh, and safe mode. But all those dont work, plz help im haveing trouble.

A:Hello, have technical problems, plz help.

dude, you have a hardware problem. your lcd backlights are not working, which is why the screen is black, but does have an image when the sun hits it. to fix that you'll need new ccl backlight blubs and the ballest to run them, not something most people can do, and costs alot.
as far as the rest of your problem, your grammer is so bad i don't understand what your are trying to say. it boots okay to safemode after improperly shutdown, but won't boot if you try to select what mode to boot into?
please clearify so that we can get you more info. go ahead and take the time to write a novel if you need to, the more info we have from you, the more likly we'll get you the correct help.

Lately I have been badgered with high pressure sales tactics from several companies who provide technical support most notably Iyogi and PcWizard. Using the Event Viewer, they found (I embarrassed to say) over 37,000 warnings, errors and informative messages which have accumulated over the past three to four years. Each has told me that I am risking everything on my computer unless this problem is dealt with immediately even though I do a complete backup twice a week. Needless to say, I told each of them I wanted to do some research about their respective companies before making a decision. This was the only way to get them off the phone. I have no idea how they got hold of my telephone number in the first place and each was reluctant to tell me. Actually, I would like to learn how to effectively manage this situation myself. This leads me to two questions. Firstly, would it be worth my while to have a strange company I have never heard of take over control of my computer? Secondly, how and where would I go about learning how to manage this situation myself? The latter of these would be far more preferable to me since it would enable me to provide this service to my clients. I have been working with computers for 27 years and my capacity to learn has not diminished regardless of my advanced age. When the link was disconnected between my computer and PcWizard, they left behind a program called 'Advanced WindowsCare V2'. I believe all they were about to do... Read more
