Thoughts on the X-Series Thinkpad X270 and the X280

Q: Thoughts on the X-Series Thinkpad X270 and the X280

Hello all, Long time thinkpad user from the W700 time haha. Just wanted to drop a line after recently getting a thinkpad x270 instead of the x280. I got a little worried with the design philosophy of the thinkpad x270 --> x280 lineage. I got the x270 because of the bigger removable battery capacity along with the ethernet port among other ports. I welcome the usb-c port in the x270 and glad to see more of that in the x280. But the fact that the x280 does not have an ethernet port along with a non-removable battery with the option to add the huge super cylindrical battery was a deal breaker for me and I see that the x280 was a step backwards in terms of a design / functionality standpoint from the x270. I am just getting a little bit worried about the design team and their vision for what the x2## series have in the future. The x280 seems to be just a cheaper version of the x1 carbon. I have the x1 carbon btw lol. Got a few thinkpads... and I like the design for the x1 carbon and i think that to remain as it is...for the thinkpad x1 carbon. I dont want that spilling over into the x2## series. That is supposed to be a pure work horse mobile productivity device. Anyway what do you guys all think about the direction which the x280 is taking from the x270 which I thought (referencing to the x270) was a pure great work horse laptop with an AMAZING battery life which is absolutely CRITICAL to the x200 line of thinkpad and really disappointed to see that dropped with the x280. Worried about the future of this line. Sorry if this was just unorganized thoughts but I like thinkpads and just wanted to express thoughts so as to maybe there are people that see it and agree...or disagree haha. What are all your thoughts??

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello everyone, hope all is well. I need some advice. We run a X260/X270 shop, had to make the jump to X280. Which in itself is all well and good. APART FROM the dock port has been removed from the bottom of the laptop. This leaves me in a problematic place because I am now stuck with 8 or so people that cannot sit at any desk apart (all ultra docks 100+). How have you guys got around this, have you just upgraded all your X260's and made the jump to X280's? Thanks in advance!!

Hello, We have a problem with 2 laptops (ThinkPad X270) that "freeze" on the LENOVO logo when using Lenovo Ultra Dock with monitor Dell UZ2715H.Display Dell is plugged by Display port ports and one USB 3.0 (9 pin - used for display integrated webcam) connected to ThinkPad dock. When notebook turned ON with connected USB 3.0, computer freeze on LENOVO logo (To interrupt normal startup, press Enter) and work only when USB 3.0 disconected, or turned OFF and again Turned ON. Firmware on Dock is 2.33.000 Any suggestion?

I am just going to guess that computer is trying to boot via USB, so you might try changing the boot order in the BIOS so that Windows Boot Manager or the HD is first.

Hello!I try to configure ThinkPad X280 with 16Gb RAM and cheapest processor  i5-8250U, but it is not allowed. Is it marketing or techical feature? Can I upgrade X280's RAM from 8 to 16 in future, if I buy cheapest version now?

A:ThinkPad X280: i5-8250U + 16Gb?

The X280 has RAM soldered to the main board so it can't be expanded or swapped out. If you need 16GB, buy the one with 16GB RAM.

I am not sure if I'm posting this question in the right section. After signing up, I found it very difficult to work out where to post! Anyway, I am thinking of buying either an Ideapad 720s (13", core i7 8th Gen, 8GB Ram, 256 GB SSD) or a Thinkpad x280 (12", core i7 8th Gen, 8GB Ram, 512 GB SSD), and I believe they both have Thunderbolt 3. So I was wondering if there are significant differences between them. Where I am, the Ideapad is around the $1,000 mark, while the Thinkpad is about $400 more expensive. Is the Thinkpad really that much better, and if so, how? Thank you.

I have the new ThinkPad x280. I need to be able to connect using a SIM card. My model is 20KF 001LV.  I am trying to figure out if my laptop model supports the SIM option, if it has a nano-SIM card slot or not. There is no indication or way to see in the settings.

A:Thinkpad X280 - nano-SIM card

X280 have a dual nanoSIM and microSD card tray located at the back of the case (check HMM on page 82 for more information). In order to use WWAN Internet connection, you also need a proper WWAN modem installed on the motherboard. Check if Fibocom L830-EB or Fibocom L850-GL is listed in Device Manager.

tl;dr Is the Thinkpad x280 flawless for Ubuntu 18.04? Hello. I recently acquired myself a X1 Yoga 3rd gen with the hopes that I would have a nice experience running Ubuntu. I feel these are nice machines in theory, and I would be willing to give them one more try. I was considering the Thinkpad x280 and I want to run Ubuntu 18.04 again. See HMM(hardware maintenance manual) Page 58 and 81.  That should help you.

As for part numbers try parts lookup.  In the left column Choose "Cards Misc Internal" for smart card reader.  Choose "Cables Internal" for the cable.

Hi everyone, I was setting up my brandnew X280 and after installing Windows 10 Pro I downloaded Lenovo System Update tool. It proposed a number of updates including a BIOS update and I let it do its job.Last I recall was the window about BIOS update where I hit enter (or ok).The noteboks was sitting in a docking station, battery fully charged. Next time I checked the progress the screen is black and the white power LED is slowly flashing (like being in standby). However I can't wake it up. It will just keep flashing.  As I can't take out the battery on a X280 what can I do? Pressing the power button for an extended period of time didn't do anything. Is there a hidden key stroke combination or do I have to wait a couple of days (weeks) until the battery has run out? I'm afraid the BIOS update failed and the system is bricked, even though I followed the instructions by the letter. Any suggestions are more than welcome! Thanks. Q.

Hi. I got my custom order X280 In July with all features for office purposes and use it just 15 times since then. The battery was never drain in shutdown mode in the first days of use. I remember that after one week being off the battery had the same percentage of charge at restart in the first month of use. Since then whenever I start it I check in Vantage if there are updates and I made the necessary updates every time, Windows updates, System updates, Bios etc. By about two weeks I noticed the battery is discharging between 6 and 8 percent overnight which is quite frustrating and annoying for a three month product. Something happened which consume the power overnight when is turned off. If they are Lenovo employees on the forum please advise me what to do. I would like to know is there is a warranty defect, something that can be fixed by the following updates or something that I can personally change in order everything come back to normal. PS. I have the USB ON disabled from Vantage Thank you.

Hi,

I just bought the Thunderbolt 3 dock and remembered reading that you have to make some changes in BIOS for the usb hub to be detected in linux. So I entered BIOS and disabled thunderbolt security and enabled some other thunderbolt feature (the one below thunderbolt security, the tooltip tells you to enable this for linux support and older versions of windows 10).

After saving and rebooting all I see is a blank screen and the fans start going at full speed.

The computer does not boot into my OS and I am not able to enter BIOS again.

Any ideas how I can fix this?

Is there a way to factory reset the BIOS without entering it? Usual solution here is to remove the CMOS battery but I really don't want to open my brand new laptop unless I know my warranty is still valid.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A:ThinkPad X280: After BIOS update, notebook won't boot anymore

It is not very difficult to remove the CMOS/Coin Cell battery on that system, just remove the main battery, and then loosen 3 screws to open the large bottom cover (see page 73 of the ThinkPad E560 and E565 Hardware Maintenance Manual for details on removing the cover)    Once the cover is open, unplug the CMOS/Coin Cell battery (you don't actually have to remove the battery), wait a few minutes and then plug it back in (see page 81 of the HMM for details). Doing so will not effect your warranty, but don't force anything and keep track of the screws.

Hi I am hoping others have experienced the same issue.  I have a brand new x270 running windows 7 64bit. I have installed Sophos encryption which uses bitlocker. When I tried to encrypt the SSD a message popped up and said TPM was not available. I rebooted the system and checked the TPM version in the BIOS it was set to 2.0 so changed to 1.2, logged back into windows and the encryption completed successfully.  However the problem i now have is every time i boot up i am asked to to provide the retrieval codes to get back into Windows. I believe the issue is with the TPM chip holding the first attempt in its memory. How do I clear it though?? From within bitlocker management in control panel I can clear tpm but it asks for a password. I have never supplied one !!!!.  If i reboot the laptop and again check the settings in the BIOS there is an option to Clear TPM with the option "Enter" but when selected it appears not to do anything. Has anyone had this issue or know how to get around it please. At the monent I have had to suspend bitlocker until resolved. Thanks in advance

It seems that Lenovo has released today first infos of upcoming models including X270: http://www.anandtech.com/show/10940/lenovo-updates-the-thinkpad-lineup-new-models-welcome-changes I have been postponing laptop purchase because I want one with QHD or better resolution, thunderbolt3 and ability to charge with standard USB type-C charger. Now it seems that for some reason that I cannot understand Lenovo has still decided not to include QHD or QHD+ resolutions to quite many of the upcoming models, including X270, Yoga 370, Thinkpad 13 and T470. It is now already 4.5 years ago from the moment when Apple Released Macbook Pro retina with QHD equivalent resolution. In addition some of the articles claim that the new USB type-C port in X270 will NOT have thunderbolt3 availability. And it is like 5.5 years since Apple included thunderbolt. I really think we should start noise from this. If there will not be a serious portable workstation like X270 with QHD or better resolution and enough USB-slots (at least 3+1) and thunderbolt support I am seriously considering to switch away from Lenovo (e.g. Dell XPS 13). I know that some people prefer FullHD (e.g. for longer battery life) so there could be an option for both. I want QHD because 1. If you want to have two web browsers side by side without horizontal scroll bars you will need minimun QHD, 2. Sorry, it is not exact error, I don't remember exactly, however something similar.  I would like to find, first of all, is it possible to install the 2.5 sata ssd to Thinkpad x270, if yes, do I need to change any BIOS settings?  Would anyone just let me know, how I can install the 2.5 sata ssd into this laptop and if it is all possible? A:X270 Thinkpad (20K5) SSD Upgrade

A lot depends on what you do with the machine.  An SSD is much faster than a spinning drive, and the biggest improvement comes on startup and shut-down where lots of little files are read and written.  (eliminates latency due to spinning time) When you are reading or writing big files, the SSD is still faster, but the difference is less.  3X4 is certainly faster than 3X2, but you will hardly notice it with little files (like startup).  The difference is greater when moving a lot of data in large files.  If you are loading data to or from the Internet, the difference will be much less because the network throughput is more likely to be the bottleneck.  Most SSDs work.  I have used ADATA drives, but not that one.  When buying non-lenovo parts, always confirm the seller's return policy.

One more thing.  When a spinning drive fails, it usually dies slowly.  You have warning signs, like read errors, timeouts, etc.  You have a chance to get most of your data off.  SSDs usually die all at once.  There is no recovery, so backups are more critical.

This is the specification of ThinkPad X270 platform:http://psref.lenovo.com/syspool/Sys/PDF/ThinkPad/ThinkPad%20X270/ThinkPad_X270_Platform_Specificatio... My question is the platform can upgrade the ram to 16GB max / 2400MHz DDR4, which it seems maximum upgrade according to the pdf. However, in crucial websitehttp://www.crucial.com/usa/en/compatible-upgrade-for/Lenovo/thinkpad-x270 it tells I can upgrade the ram to 16gb / 2666MHz DDR4, and I'm really confused if it is compatible with x270 or not.

Just purhcased the Thinkpad X270 and really loves it! However I can't find the shortcut key to turn off LCD display. Some previous Thinkpad user suggestion like FN+F3 , FN+F7 didn't work in this laptop. I know there are some 3rd party EXE tools could turn the screen off however I don't want to rely on them because of security. Anyone know the magic key combo for X270? Thanks!

Are there any photos available of the three options for the rear battery on the X270? The Lenovo ordering page lists the option, but gives no clue of the size or weight involved.  Any information will be gratefully received.

I have a Thinkpad T430 type 23474W4 and a Thinkpad mini dock series 3 type 4338-15U. I already have a Lenovo LEN LS2223wC monitor hooked up to it through one of the DVI ports. I have a a Lenovo LT1952p Monitor that I would like to use as a second external monitor. Both monitors work individually through either DVI or VGA. However, I can't get them to both work at the same time no matter what configuration I use. I was told they didn't have to be identical monitors to work together. What am I doing wrong?

When I dock the computer and press the power button on the dock it doesn't recognize my monitor as the main screen. I have to hit a key (Windows 10) and put in my password hoping that it's doing that and then the screen comes up. If I reboot after that ... THEN.... it recognizes my screen as the main monitor. How do I fix this? The only time this happens is when I use it off the dock and then put it back on. If it stays on the dock all the time it does just fine. Any fixes for this? Thanks...

Hi, My 6-mo old x270 suddenly would not book passed bios stage. It was functioning perfectly, it is reasonably new, and under warranty. Here's what's happening (I compiled all the screenshots into one file): If I boot it, I end up in a Windows Boot Manager, that looks like this: see attached "Image 1" Nothing happens from there. "Image 2" shows the message right before the computer enters the Boot Manager. "Image 3" is the screenshot of my Bios "Startup" settings. I messed around with settings, but nothing helped. "Image 4" I then ran all the diagnostics tests. They were all ok except for the harddrive. That test says: "Smart short self-test: FAILED." This is in "Image 5". Please advise me what to do, whether I can try anything else, or whether I need to contact Lenovo or a retailer. I believe the computer is under warranty. This is, of course, very frustrating to have this happen to a new, expensive computer - shakes my faith in Thinkpads a bit, to be honest. I hope I'm missing something though... Thank you.
