I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hey,

So my laptop has its own slot for cards, just not that sony memory stick pro duo one... so I have an external card reader connected to my usb port. When I first connected it it installed drivers and stuff and then said it was ready to use. I go into my computer and it shows 4 new removable drives (4 slots in the external card reader). when the cards are not in it, if i right click on the drives they say "please insert a disc into removable disk k:" and then when I do, it freezes when I try to click on it... This is with the Sony Memory Stick PRO Duo. If I insert my XD and SD chips they work (well it says i have to format them... but it doesnt freeze) The worst thing about freezing is that my taskbar and desktop then disappears, and wont come back until i remove the whole device. I have had issues with my USB ports in the past, it just doesnt seem to like alot or external things... but its okay with my phone and my mouse and my mp3 player, but not my boyfriends phone (google... something) or his external hard drive, for those it wont read them at all. Any help is greatly appreciated. but please nothing too techy, Ive tried stuff that required you to make a system restore point "just in case" and lo and behold... if i didnt this computer wouldnt work right now... so yea

A:External USB card reader wont work

Try use the AC Adapter connect to the notebook.

Remove all other USB Device and Only the card Reader..

and Test... Sometime when you plug in the card reader it use the power from the notebook.... . if the current the USB provide is unstable or lower ... then this kind of issue may happen..

So I've read many comments regarding the X1 Carbon 2015 models SD Card Reader missing. Or is it missing really? Also many people compared it to the Macbook Pro and pointed out that it still has one. The way I see it, the Apple solution has a card reader because that is a big convenience for some of the target audience of that machine. As you might know cameras and such store their data on cards and people who use cameras alot tend to prefer Macbook Pro more so than any ultrabook (or even Macbook Air for that matter) due to some extra horsepower in case they do video or photo editing etc. It needs to be portable, last long on batteries and have a little punch. So few ultrabooks have this and in such a premium package and that is why it is popular. I have a similar reason to look at X1 Carbon, it is portable and now with 5th gen even more powerful with a 1440p screen and premium build. I don't care about MacOS so I ruled out the Macbook and that leaves me with very few options in terms of powerful ultrabook-ish solutions one of which is X1 Carbon. I might opt for a Razer Blade 2015 refresh if it becomes available soon due to similar reasons and I don't even require the extra gaming power as this will be my work laptop. (I am a self employed programmer) I think outside of testing once or twice, I have never ever used the SD Card readers on the laptops I owned. Most, no sorry ALL of the devices that use a card as storage, also provide means to connec... Read more

A:X1 Carbon 2015 - About SD Card Reader

I find the whining bizarre and ridiculous-and if you actually look, the overwhelming majority of posts about it are from one or two individuals. They just make so many posts that it seems like an issue. It's not. Most people never use it. I know I haven't. This is just the classic case of internet amplification.  As you mention, removing the card vs. connecting a USB cable? seems like a no-brainer. As far as trading it for an HDMI port? I'm all for that, since I use an HDMI cable almost every day to run an external monitor. If one really needs an SD card reader, the new XPS13 looks like a great option. I'm too wedded to the trackpoint and Lenovo keyboard personally, but otherwise it looks like a great machine.

I recently purchased an X1 carbon 1st Gen running windows 10 and I can't find a way to get the fingerprint reader to work. It may not be possible but I thought I would see if anyone here has found a solution. Apparently there is a solution for the type 20AF but I can't find a solution or an updated driver for the Type 3460. If anyone can point me in the right direction that would be great. I have updated my Bios and many of my other drivers. I have tried downloading the Synaptic Metallic drivers as well And I tried updating my AthenTec Driver for the fingerprint reader but it still doesn't work.

• supports 3.3V/5V 16-bit PCMCIA cards

• can read/write to a wireless LAN card or a modem card or an Ethernet LAN card
• EXTERNAL
• works with Windows OS’s

My friend had been having some trouble with his graphics card, it kept crashing during games, and eventually seemed to burn out all together. So he bought a new one.

When he installed it, the network was gone, he had to reinstall his network card drivers, then he updated his graphics card drivers. Everything seems peachy.

He loaded up starcraft II, and the game crashes to desktop everytime, He can't even select a mode to play. So he uninstalled the drivers and reinstalled them. Now the game loaded up just fine, and he can play... BUT when it loads up the network crashes and he has to reinstall the network drivers.

After the computer restarts he loaded up starcraft II, and now it crashes again. So it seems like everytime he updates the network drivers it screws up the graphics card, and everytime he updates the graphics card drivers it screws up the network card.

I've never heard of a problem like this so I'm at a loss to help.

Hello all, I have a 1st Gen Thinkpad X1 Carbon, running 64bit Windows 8.1, and I'm having trouble getting it to detect my external graphics card.  I'm using a GTX960 sitting in an "EXP GDC Beast" external graphics card cradle, powered by an ATX power supply.  I'm confident that it's plugged in correctly, as the power supply starts up when I boot my laptop, and both the cradle and the graphics card show the correct LEDs when everything is turned on.  It's plugged into my TV using the HDMI cable.  As a troubleshooting step, I did the "paperclip trick" to get the ATX power supply to stay on all the time, but the card still isn't detecting. The cradle is plugged into the X1 Carbon (1st gen) using the PCIe port under the keyboard.  I had to remove the WWAN card to make room for it.  Windows Device Manager no longer lists the WWAN card, but it doesn't seem to detect the cradle yet.  I tried downloading "DIY eGPU Setup 1.35" from "egpu.io", but i'm waiting for developer's email before I can start using this third-party app. I'm not getting any error messages, nor any strange sounds or lights from the graphics card.  Therefore, I can only assume it's a software issue. Can anyone please offer any advice on how to proceed next?  I'm struggling to find any useful information on this eGPU cradle anywhere online, so I hope this community will be able to help. I appreciate any tips you can offer. Regards,A... I have a T460s on a fresh install of Win10. I just bought an external USB fingerprint reader https://www.amazon.com/Fingerprint-PQI-Matching-Biometric-Security/dp/B06XG4MHFJ/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&....My hope was that when my laptop was docked (on a ThinkPad Pro dock), I could plug it into a USB port on my external keyboard and login using it. For the time being, I'm just trying to get it working with the laptop undocked (i.e. forget about external keyboards, USB hubs etc.). Starting from scratch (i.e. fingerprints cleared in both Windows and the BIOS, and the external USB NOT plugged in), I setup the internal fingerprint reader, add prints, and am able login with no problem. When I plug in the external reader, drivers install just fine.  I enrolled a different finger, and was able to login just fine. However, when I unplug the external USB reader, I am never able to get the internal reader working again.  With the external unplugged and after a full restart, the internal will still not let me log in: the fingerprint option doesn?t even show up at the Windows login screen. The only way I can get the internal working again is by plugging the external in again (so that it appears in Device Manager), uninstalling both fingerprint devices (just uninstalling the external USB does not work), restarting the computer, and reenrolling my fingerprint using the internal. I know there is an option in the BIOS to just use the internal re... I'm using Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit. The card reader is a samsung sema card reader 3.5 (SFD-321F/T4XU). And I bought it new.
When I click onto the computer icon in the main window. It shows all of the slots as "removable disk" plus a letter.
When I insert a card into the reader. Windows 7 can't read the card. I have used the card in another reader and it works fine. So it is not the card itself.
Before I installed Windows 7, I had vista home premium 64 on the same computer, and that OS had no problem reading the card slots. So I'm thinking it has to be a software issue.
So when I go into the device manager, the drivers for the reader are in a folder called: Human interface devices. And the drivers read as HID-compliant device.
I have tried to change the driver(s), but all I get is USB drivers for everything but a card reader.
I have searched the web for a card reader driver for this model, but unable to find one.
So my question is how the HELL!! do I get this card reader to work again. Thanks

hi everyone,
I have a problem getting my Compact Flash Card Reader to work on my laptop. I've never had a problem on any other computers- I just plug it in and can view my files or pictures that I've stored on my Compact Flash card.
BUT, i switched laptops, and when I plug the card reader in, it does recognize the hardware and says it's ready to use. HOWEVER, when i put any of my Compact flash cards IN the reader, it gives me this message:

"USB Device not recognized! One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it. For assistance on how to solve this problem, please click here."

When I click on it, it just tells me to remove it and plug it back in...but that doesn't work- I get the same message. I'm overseas here without the CD that came with the Card reader, but from what I'm reading online, I shouldn't need to install a driver because Windows XP should recognize that 'plug and play' device.
SO what do you think could be the problem?!!
Any help would be great, Thanks!, Susan

My old HD (Samsung SP2504C) died. Put in new HD, ran System Restore from disks, installed Acronis, and installed external HD for backup. I can learn.
Now my internal 5 in 1 card reader does not work. USB works.

Do normal startup and put 1GB Memory Stick Pro Duo into reader and nothing happens. It does not show in Computer.

Device Manager shows all four readers under Disk Drives, but also shows under Storage Volumes 4 generic volumes that are not working properly.Error: This device cannot start (Code 10).
Disk Management shows something in Disk 5, but no drive letter is assigned. Properties says it is working properly but I can do nothing with it.

I uninstall the generic storage volumes, put the memory stick into the reader and restart the computer. The memory stick now works. Device Manager now shows only 3 generic volumes. Disk Manager shows the memory stick as Disk 5, drive I.

The drives for both Card Readers and generic volumes show Microsoft version 6.0.6001.1800 dated 6/21/2006. However, details show some different drivers for the generics.

Disabling or uninstalling the generics does not help. If generics are uninstalled, they just reinstall when the computer is restarted. Have disconnected the power cord, disconnected cable to card reader, and held start switch in for 2 minutes.

Any ideas... Read more

The problem happens with a Thinkpad R500 running 32-bit Windows 10.

The R500 has a built-in card reader, however, that reader no longer works properly.
Several times I've installed drivers for the card reader. Each time, the reader briefly works, then fails to operate the next time the R500 is used.
Checking the knowledge base and Levovo online support turns up no cause, explanation, or solution.
The card reader has been activated in the R500's BIOS.
SFC/scannow shows no problems.

I have Vista Ultimate x64. I have a flash card reader (part of my PC) that works just fine when I insert a card to be read (the first time around). After I, "safely remove hardware" and insert the same or different flash card to be read again, my PC doesn't recognize the freshly inserted flash card (the second time) until I reboot my PC.

Is there anything else I can do to get the flash card to be recognized the second time I insert it into my PC, instead of rebooting my PC? (I've tried "install new hardware" and having my computer scan for changes, with no luck)

Thanks in advance

A:have to restart for card reader to work again?

Hello 1basket, and welcome to Vista Forums.

Restarting Explorer instead may allow the device to be redetected without having to restart the computer.

You do not have to use the "safely remove hardware" feature as long as you make sure that you do not have anything being written to or copied from the flash card before removing it.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Hi: Your model does not come with built in bluetooth networking. The Atheros wireless network adapter is only wireless, not a combination wireless/bluetooth adapter. You need this driver for the SD card reader... This package contains the driver that enables the Realtek Card Reader in supported notebook models that are running a supported operating system. The card reader enables users to read from or write to supported removable storage cards, which are typically used in digital cameras, digital music players, and cellular phones.  ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp72001-72500/sp72086.exe

hey, well i installed Windows 7 32-bit a few days ago. but i noticed that none of the transparency, peek, or anything else like that works. I went to Personalize> Troubleshoot problems and it told me "The current video card may support Aero with a different driver." Is there anything I can download to make Aero work?

My video driver:
SiS 651_661FX_741_760_M661FX_M661MX_M741_M760
My PC:
HP Pavillion a810n

It's dx8.1, so no. You have a spare agp slot though, get something off ebay.

I have an Optiplex 760 running Windows 7 Home Premium with an Intel Pentium Dual Core processor, 4 GB RAM. I installed a working TEAC CA-200  card reader that I pulled from another system. Now, the card reader will not work. It isn't even found by the computer. Also, in Device Manager, there is a yellow question mark by PCI Serial Port and PCI Simple Communications Controller. Any help would really be appreciated, thanks!

Hi Smart Guy,
The time has come to ask for your expertise...I know of no more knowledgeable site, and this problem is driving me nuts. A little backround... Firstly, I know all hardware is working perfectly.(tested on 2nd machine) Second, I know the USB port on my motherboard is working. Also, ALL other USB devices work fine.
NOW..., I install the 12-in-one card reader, 3.5" drive mount. (I have also tried external readers.) XP will absolutely NOT recognize ANY type of smart cards, various formats, from several cameras. The
'mass storage device" DOES show up when I double click the "green arrow" card icon in the tray. HOWEVER, NOTHING shows up in My Computer, Disk management, Windows Explorer, etc. No drives, drive letters, or anything shows up under "Removable Storage Devices" I guess you can tell by what I DO know about the problem, that I have tried all the elemental stuff. Of course, the drivers are native in XP for these devices. I'm at wit's end.... NO WAY to view pics, use my mp3 devices, etc. I am at wit's end. PLEASE
PLEASE HELP!!!!
THANK YOU!!! Gary

Hi, I have a ThinkPad X230, which originally had Windows 7 installed on it.  When I accepted the upgrade to Windows 10, everything worked fine apart from one thing:  the built-in SD Card reader. When I insert an SD card into the reader, the computer eventually recognizes it as a SD card, but when I click on it I get the following message: "D:\ is not accessible.  A device attached to the system is not functioning." I have tried all kinds of things to get it to work, based on various other posts on this forum.  For example installing new drivers from Lenovo website, installing them in Compatibility Mode etc.  But none of these have fixed the issue.  If I right-click on the SD Card icon for my D: drive, and select Properties, it doesn't detect any used space or any free space. If I open Device Manager when there is a SD card inserted, I see "Ricoh SD Disk Device" under the section entitled "Disk Drives", and I see "Ricoh PCIe SD/MMC Host Controller" under the section entitled "Memory technology devices".  I also see " D:\" under the section entitled "Portable Devices". I updated my laptop's BIOS not long ago.  I have BIOS version 2.65. I have an mSATA card (about 120GB) for Windows OS and applications, and a separate 500GB traditional hard drive for my Data.  I have had this mSATA / HDD configuration since the very beginning. Does anybody have any idea what I need to do to fix this problem... my laptop is vaio type N vgn-nr72b. I cant find any sd card reader drivers.my os is windows 7 home premium 64 bit.

A:my built in sd card reader wont work

Hello Kastiel26

Everything I find for that particular model is in Japanese, VGN-NR72B | ??????? | ??????? | VAIO | ????? If your understanding of Japanese is as good as mine I suggest trying similar model numbers ie. Sony eSupport - VGN-NR110E - Software Updates & Drivers and seeing if the card reader download will work for you.

My W550s worked flawlessly with a 128GB UHS-1 Sandisk SD. But with the Lexar 1000X 256gb UHS-2 SD,http://www.lexar.com/pro-1000x-sd it seems to work fine for a while but then suddenly it stops transferring and crashes  windows explorer. It has to be restarted and card inserted again for it to work fine for a short while after it happens again.  This card works great on my girlfriends Asus Zenbook. Any ideas? thanks.

The problem happens with a Thinkpad R500 running 32-bit Windows 10. The R500 has a built-in card reader, however, that reader no longer works properly .
