Failed Reverting Back to 7

Q: Failed Reverting Back to 7

My father hit yes to upgrad his HP Probook 6407b from Windows 7 to Win 10. He did not realize what he was saying yes to.

He brought it to me before it finsihed. I got into win 10, but then had issues with HP security software at boot. It would hang at boot, say something about a finger print reader, and then allow me to log in. So I decided to revert back to win 7. that failed. Goes to try a startup repair and it does not work. It looks like win 7 trying to do it and not 10.

Is there any way to recover either win 7 or 10?

I tried a win 10 usb drive, but it says the upgrade was previously started in windows, turn off machine and restart, but that fails.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

How did you try to revert back to Win 7 ?
Did you do it this way ?........................................

Start button > left side, select Settings > select Update and Security > left side, select Recovery > right side, under Go back to Windows 7, click the Get Started button > follow the prompts from then on.

Hi there,

I turned on my laptop today, and I got the message "Windows failed to configure updates, reverting changes' at the logon screen, and it just loops there forever, even if i leave it there for like an hour. I can't shutdown or restart, unless I power it down.

I tried to boot into safe mode, but i can't do that either, I get the same message, and last known configuration doesn't work either.

I go to system restore, and it just fails on every system restore image. says something about failing to extract a different file each time, and the registry could not be copied on one of them.

It won't let me run a SFC /scannow check either, and I just can't get passed the logon screen stage. Startup repair doesn't help either, just says everything is fine and that my boot was successful :S weird.

Any ideas or suggestions, minimizing having to format and reinstall windows - as it's got all my alevel work on it o.0

thanks in advance!

Hello,

Solved same problem today on two computers running Win7. Both failed installing four upodates and have been like this for several days.
SOLUTION: Go to Win Update. View the four files that Win 7 is trying to update. You will see four updates with their boxes checked for auto update. Unclick update KB982018 and update only the remaining three. Later update KB982018 separately. You can also manually update these individually. This worked for me.

Hi folks,

I have a reoccurring problem with my laptop which perhaps you could help with.

My laptop always fails to install windows updates with the following error:
"Failure to install windows updates; reverting changes"

I took a look in my update history, as per the image below. What is interesting is that there appears to be a reoccurring problem with two particular updates which repeatedly fail:

The history of failed updates goes back way further too. KB2871690 & KB2871777 have repeatedly failed.
KB2802618 failed for while and eventually succeeded.

Can anyone give me any pointers? Microsofts Fixit didn't work, sadly.

Thanking you in advance,

Henry Cann

You can try running the trouble shooter:
Windows Update: Frequently asked questions - Microsoft Windows Help

Also I would look through the list and see if any of the updates are for Windows Update itself. If so, try to run those manually.

I made a big mistake by updating to XP SP2.
Is there a way to go back to SP1...

A:Reverting Back to SP1...

You can go to Add/Remove programs and uninstall SP2. I would then go to system restore and restore to a point before you installed SP2. There should be a point named SP2 install or something like this.

I downloaded the beta version of Microsoft Office Professional 2007 the other day and it seems to have upgraded my Office 2003 applications rather then installing 2007 seperately and leaving me the option of using either 2003 or the beta of 2007. The beta versions are very buggy from what I understand, so what happens if I want to go back to only having Office 2003. I don't have the actual 2003 software CD. The guy I bought the computer from never included it, so I hope that I don't have to go through and reinstall everything to get 2003 back the way it was before downloading Office 2007.

This is before I get to the desktop, it just hangs like this, even in safe mode.

I've tried booting in safe mode, same thing happens.

I've tried system repair, it said that there is nothing to repair.

I can't use system restore because I don't have a restore point available.

Must I reinstall?

Please help!

A:Windows update failed, reverting

How long did you wait so far? I'd recommend to let it load.. it could take a while but it's the safest way to regain access to your system. Start it before you go to sleep and check it in the morning again.

If it's a new system, don't install to many updates at once..

Refreshed my laptop, so I had to reinstall all the windows updates. It prompts me to restart my pc. I oblige. System reboots. I'm then met with a screen that states that it's configuring updates. Then it tells me it's failed and it's reverting changes. I leave it for two hours and it's still stuck on that. I force restart, and it goes back to the configuring update screen, follow by the reverting changes screen. Basically, I'm stuck now, can't get to the windows login screen. F8 doesn't bring up the safe mode option. Help

Do you have the installation disk? If so try booting from that and do a startup repair.

Alright, I'm using this Microsoft article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971760/

I have the windows.old folder on my HD, everything intact, but when I type and of the commands, it tells me it cannot find the file specified. I know they're there. ;_;

I'm going to cry.

A:Reverting back to XP via windows.old.

Step 3 says that if you receive that message to move on to step 4 as follows:

Step 4: Copy the contents or move the contents of the Windows.old folder
Note When you type one or more of the commands at the command prompt in the following steps and press ENTER, you may receive the following message:
The system cannot find the file specified.
If you receive this message, go to the next step in this section, and then type the command in that next step.

Type the following commands at the command prompt:
Type the following command, and then press ENTER:
move /y c:\windows.old\windows c:\
Type the following command, and then press ENTER:
move /y "c:\windows.old\program files" c:\
Type the following command, and then press ENTER:
move /y c:\windows.old\users c:\
Type the following command, and then press ENTER:
move /y “c:\windows.old\documents and settings” c:\
And, it looks like if you get that same message again, you're supposed to move on to step 5. Its confusing for sure but it looks like you have to figure out exactly where the .old file is supposed to be and get it there if needed. Without seeing or knowing more that's my best guess.

I'm using a Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit upgrade from Windows Vista (the key can't be used with a 'normal' install disc).

Welcome to Seven Forums Joona. I take it you found IE9 on the list of installed updates? This should indicate you had IE8 originally, and it should indeed revert.

Try this:

Start> In search box type run> Enter> When run box opens type iexplore.exe> Enter

Does IE8 open? If not, you can try this Fix It to make sure IE9 was uninstalled correctly

I upgraded to Windows 10 on July 30th from Win7.
Before I did I cloned my Win7 disk to another spare drive.
I periodically boot into that drive and after a few minutes it tries to Upgrade to Win10 and fails. I want it to stop doing that.
It probably fails because the upgrade files in the download folder are corrupt.
I have uninstalled KB3035583 and hidden it.
How do I stop Windows 7 from trying to upgrade to Windows 10?
I already called Windows Support and they were no help and they had no problems with me running Windows 7 and Windows 10 on the same machine as long as I didn't run them both at the same time (how could I?).

I have a laptop bought nine years ago, now running Windows 10 Home version 1903. It is only used when there is a problem with my desktop computer, or when a portable PC is needed. It was originally using Windows 7 but with the present operating system it is almost unusably slow, with boot up 2 mins. 40 seconds and loading imaging software nearly three minutes ? there is only one program loaded at startup ? defender (msconfig). I have the Windows 7 original product serial number and an OEM copy of Windows 7 ? is it possible to revert without buying a new copy of Windows 7, it would then presumably be much quicker ? the lack of future fixes would be acceptable. Or maybe there is a way to make it go faster in Windows 10?

Hello,

Sorry to bother, could someone please help out?

My computer has gotten slowly all of a sudden during the last 2 weeks.

It takes several minutes when trying to open/rename/copy/move/deletes folders/files, and even longer when emptying the recycle bin. Same goes with opening some programs especially FireFox & Winamp.

I also keep getting this message "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience" It crashes every time I try to play certain videos, copying or moving files.

For the last couple years, I kept getting the message "Your system is low on virtual memory" My current memory is 256MB of RAM, I will buy another bar of RAM soon, still it's not an excuse for the sudden slowness, especially when I don't have powerful programs that requires the upgrade.

I have scanned with SpySweeper and Panda, both detected malware, unfortunately no fixing was done since both require payment to do so.

I scanned then with Ad-Aware, Spybot and AVG and fixed whatever they found.

I do have a log of Panda and screencap of SpySweeper, so if HJT log fails to be useful, I will provide the other 2 logs if requested.

I hope I provided enough information, and many thanks for taking the time to help out!

Hi, I am trying to reset my laptop back to the original windows 7 it came with from Windows 10. I went on the Microsoft website and even though I have the product / license key they told me that as this came pre installed on my equipment I needed to contact the manufacturer. I have looked and looked on the HP website and I cannot find anything to help me and I do not see why I have to purchase another copy of Windows 7. My laptop doesn't even revert to factory setting as I have tried this several times and I am still stuck with Windows 10. The laptop is my standby as I have a new one but I can't get my old Lexmark printer to work in Windows 10 but it worked fine in Windows 7 so I want to have my older laptop reverted back to windows 7, my new one came with windows 10 as it's only 5 months old. Any help to get Windows 7 back on my laptop would be appreciated and I would have thought that HP would and should be able to help.

Well I don't know if there's anything better than windows default or whatever, i just want to get rid of the modification I made because I can't seem to hit anything precisely on desktop, which is actually good to have acceleration.
It's killing me because I do a lot quickly and can't seem to hit buttons, icons, and all the precise small stuff that is needed in video editing, coding, web etc.
I found this guide about game mode The Truthful Mouse Guide

But I know I used one of the guides to change registery, and I don't really see the difference by disabling/enabling "Enhance mouse percision" in controlpanel

I just want to get this back to defaults, unless there's a better setting for desktop use.

Welcome
This is the procedure
Clean Install with a Full Version of Vista
But be aware, you MUST have the correct key number of it will not work after 30 days and you will not have Seven, either.
If you have a key and are not sure if it is valid, call Microsoft to be sure
In addition, problems installing are always possible.
That being said. Seven is better than Vista. It is Vista with a lot more features. I think that if you give it time and learn, you will be happy that you kept it.

Problem is the HARDDRIVE!
I had a fresh install and had the problem with existing harddrive.
Also had problem on an up and running computer about 4 months old; just never got around to fixing it.
I tried all the fixes on the new one to no luck. I know some windows setup settings look for certain hardware for some setup processes so I tried an old drive I have kicking around. I Cloned the new drive onto it and ran the computer and then SP1 and all worked. I cloned back to the new drive and about 187 updates have now installed. It's working perfectly.
I had the same problem on the second computer and cloned it onto a different drive and then to an SSD also; it worked on both drives; also had 187 updates install.
Even after reinstalling the OS twice and immediately trying the SP1 it still didn't work until I cloned to the older harddrives.

One thing you might try during the bootup is to hit like F8 or F12 (every system is different) to see if it provides the boot options. If so, you could tell it to start Windows normally.

Hello all, I've been having this problem recently ~2-3 weeks ago with my Windows Update.

I am unable to install these 3 updates through Windows Update, as well as downloading them manually from the Microsoft Update site:

Security Update for .NET Framework 3.5.1 on Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 for x64-based Systems (KB2446710)

Security Update for .NET Framework 3.5.1 on Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 for x64-based Systems (KB2478662)

Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2871997)

Sometimes it will install one of the three updates and ask me to restart, while it's step 3 of 3 of the updates it quickly shuts down (sometimes so fast I don't see the message): Update failed, reverting changes or something along the lines of that and automatically restarts, does the same thing until I reboot in safe mode then back in normal mode.

I have Microsoft Security Essentials and Malwarebytes fully updated and installed, and have ran full virus/rootkit scans on both of them and it doesn't pick up anything. My Windows is Genuine.

Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit

Also on a side note: Whenever I double-click an image on my desktop and a couple folders and close it my explorer.exe stops responding for about 20 seconds, it only happens in 2 folders and the desktop; could this be malware? If so how can I fix this without reinstalling my windows (I've already reinstalled once, but I never had that problem before.)

So I clicked the remember settings for this file type option, then clicked SAVE. After that one downloaded, every other one skipped the save process, and went straight to OPEN. Had I opened the file I clicked remember...... I would have understood why. I went thru my internet options and changed a couple of things, even restored the default options. Nothing. Any ideas as to how I can get the files to save rather than to open?
Note: Right clicking every single time I download something is NOT an option. I already know how to do that. I want to know how to left click and THEN I have the option to open or save.
Thanks in advance!

Is this happening only with zip files or every file you download?

My friend upgraded from 7 to 10. Then she reverted back to 7. Now there is no wifi or LAN connection. It says its a driver issue. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers from the manufacture. Device manager says all is ok. I made sure the services were enabled. I'm at a loss on this one. Need some expert advice on how to troubleshoot. She has a Sony Vaio model VPCEB33FM.

My acer aspire v5-571-6471 went to update last night. It ran into a problem of some sort told me failure in update and is reverting back to its last functions. I went to bed and when I woke it was on a please wait screen. Been there for 9 hours. I tried alt+f10 to access the recovery partion as I can not get to my login screen. But alt+f10 does nothing. I do not have a windows 8 recovery dick laying around as I just bought the laptop from my sister who also has no recovery dick. Please help. If anyone is nice enough to make a recovery dick iso for usb and allow me to download it I would be grateful. I really don't have the money to go and buy anything at this current time.

A:failure in update and is reverting back

The proper word is disc for CD or DVD, not dick. You sound young.

Disc is marked as such on the face of the Optical drive tray.

You can get the Factory Restore discs for Windows 7 from Acer, I did for an Aspire I was given, cost less than $30US, haven't check price for Windows 8 yet.

Hi to all forum members. I have just now upgraded my Windows 7 Acer Aspire 5542G laptop to Windows 10. I do know that I can revert back to Windows 7 and then re-activate Windows 10 at a later date. My question is, if I do revert back to Windows 7 then do a factory reset on my laptop back to factory settings, would I still be able to re-activate to Windows 10 at a later date?
regards, Ron

Positively yes.

Once you have windows 10 installed and activated, you have the Digital Entitlement. That is good for the life of your computer.
Going back to Win 7 and factory reset makes no difference. (Provided you do not change motherboard.)
You are still entitled to re-install Windows 10 in the same computer any time you want and as often as you want.
There is no time restriction as to when you want to re-install.

I have a bunch of pictures in folders on my computer. When I view them they are viewed as icons only so I want to change the folder to a "picture" folder.

I right click the folder in question and click Properties-->Customize and change it from "general items" to "pictures" I then click "also apply this templete so subfolders". Then I click apply and OK.

When I go back into the folder or the properties this setting instantly reverts back to "general items". The folder I do and any sub-folders as well. I don't understand why this isn't sticking!?!

A:Folder Customization keeps reverting back

try this
click organize then click folder and search options .
in the window that opens click the view tab and see if the topmost item on the list is checked.

you want it to be unchecked ,so it shows thumbnails not icons.

The touchpad settings for my X1 Yoga keeps reverting back to the previous setting, no matter how many times I change it and save it. Why is this happening?  The two changes I want to keep that keeps reverting back, are these: 1) Have the middle button behave as a middle-button (instead of for scrolling) 2) Have the scrolling direction on the touchpad act normally (no reverse direction).  I had changed those settings when I first got the X1 Yoga, but then soon I chanced it again to what I want it to be now, but ever since then, those settings just won't stay and keeps reverting back to the first change I made, and it's been weeks and weeks. No matter how many times I change them and save, they only last until I close the lid. The next time I open the lid, they've reverted back.

I am working with Windows 7, and I am trying to revert back to IE7, I have tried reseting thru the tool menu and going to internet options and reseting, but that does not not work!

Tried reinstalling IE7 but error came up saying IE7 is not supported on this operating system.

Also tried turning off IE8 so it would revert back to IE7, but after restarting there is no internet browser available at all.

any suggestions!

thank you

A:troubleshooting reverting back to IE7 in windows 7

IE7 is not compatible with Win7. Windows 7 came with IE8, so you can't go backwards.

If you are having compatibility issues, you can click the little "broken page" next to the URL in the address bar and refresh the page, or you can download a different browser to see if it's an IE issue.

Of course you can also upgrade to IE9 as well.

Hi, I've been reading a lot the last few hours about the Free Windows 10 upgrade for Windows 7 & 8.1 users, but so far no one has answered the question about downgrading if there's problems or if you just don't like it....

So, if I upgrade to Windows 10 when it's released, and find I can't get along with can and I then uninstall it and re-install Windows 7 with my original licence key?

Is a revert back to windows vista from windows 7 WHILE still keeping your files and settings possible?

I need to do this as i cant dual boot because Vista wont let me shrink my 286GB partition past 9GB.

A:Reverting back to Vista from Windows 7

Did you install Windows 7 in a dual boot setup or installed Windows 7 over Windows Vista?

You need to backup your files in C:\Users\<username> and and other settings to an external hard disk or CD/DVD. Then you can reformat the drive and reinstall Vista.

Usually settings can be transferred from an old OS to a new OS or from the same OS but not backwards from a new OS to an old OS due. In this case I would say no.

You can back up files such as documents, pictures, email, music and so on but not settings, they will have to be done from scratch

I'm using Windows XP SP2 and with the classic interface style. For some reason, though, Windows reverts back to the XP style whenever I reboot. I've checked my startup programs (both in startup menu and registry/RUN) but it's all clean there. What could be causing this problem?

One thing to note: only the style gets reverted on reboot, all the other interface appearance settings (font size, window color, desktop background, menu animation, etc.) remain intact.

TIA

Hi there
I had to revert one of my laptops back to W7 -- need it for work. I'm still using W8 at home etc.

I did a CLEAN re- install of W7 Enterprise X-64 which INCLUDED SP1.

After the install it needed over 120 updates -- even BEFORE installing OFFICE 2010. This was a W7 install which INCLUDED SP1 so if you are reverting to an OLDER copy of W7 you'll need even more updates. !!!

Just warning people in case for one reason or another they revert back to W7 and choose to do a complete re-install -- process could take you longer than you think !!!!

Cheers
jimbo

A:Warning - reverting back to W7 might need a LOT of updates

Why don't you use something like Macrium Reflect FREE Edition to take an image, then renew the image after each set of updates.

I can's seem to be able to get the Vista Aero theme to stick. I downloaded this program that was supposed to change XP to look like Vista, but I already had Vista installed. I just wanted it for the "Object Dock" program. Anyways, when I uninstalled it, it made my computer look like a wnidows 2000 installation. When I go to themes, I am able to turn it back to Aero, but everytime I restart my Computer, it goes back to the win2000 theme. Please help me with this, I can't figure it out.
