Cross platform network printing

Q: Cross platform network printing

I am having a heck of a time trying to get my laptop ( w2000)
pc to print over the lan to a windows 98se host.

Here is the setup:
IBM T22 Laptop windows 2000
See's the neighborhood shares the dsl.

P3 server pc Windows 98se connected to a Lexmark Z53

Printers are shared, the IBM can see the network printer and is set for it to be the default but when you print nothing happens ..It sits in Que and says printing and then goes away.

Called lexmark and they said they do not support cross platform printing. Not that it could'nt be done but that they do not support nor tell you how to do it.

Any Ideas?

Preferred Solution: Cross platform network printing

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Ive got a windows XP sp2 machine and a mac OSX (10.2 i think) connected through a D-LINK router via cat5 cable. I also have a server (windows 2000 advanced server edition) connected.

I have an EPSON Stylus CX5400 printer (printer/scanner/copier) hooked up to my XP machine via USB.

I am at a loss on how to be able to print from the macintosh to my printer, when my computer is on of course.

On my server I have PCMACLAN installed with appletalk protocols and stuff, and I am able to print from there to my printer.

If there isnt a way to directly connect to my printer from the mac, is there a way to connect via appletalk or something on the server and then have it forword the "message" over to my computer to print.

I dont NEED the scanner funcionality on the mac, though it would nice, if theres a way (which I doubt).

I would also like to stay away from print servers.. not in the mood for spending money and I would loose some funcionality.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

I have a windows 2000 computer (ugh) attached to a printer without a network card, and I was wondering if anyone knew of a good cross platform print server that I could run to be able to print from both linux (ubuntu) and windows 7.

It seems as though there aren't dirvers that work with windows 7 for my printer, and getting cups to work seems to be a pain as well.

Hey guys.

I'm having a problem seeing a shared printer over my LAN. It's shared on a box running XP Pro. Sharing is turned on, and the printer has been "shared." Still no luck looking for it from the other PCs in the office. Any advice?

Part two: I've been trying to see the printer from a Mac as well, with no success. I can see the PC workgroup, and the computer sharing the printer, but I can't log in to it. I can log in to the other PCs on the network by entering the "computer name" as the username, and the administrator password. This particular machine, however, won't let me do that. Any ideas?

Although you likely have a lot of this working, the basics for troubleshooting are:

1. Make sure you have the same IP scheme (e.g. 192.168.0.x).

2. Make sure you have the same Subnet Mask, Gateway, and DNS IP addresses.

3. Make sure you can ping the other computer's IP address. If this fails, just for testing, make sure you turn off XP's as well as any other firewall.

4. Make sure you can ping the other computers by name.

5. Make sure you have the same workgroup name (watch for trailing spaces)

6. For troubleshooting purposes, turn off XP's and completely uninstall any other firewall software. You can always add more complexity after you get it working.

7. With XP, make sure you have the same username and password as the person logging onto the other computers. The default setting for XP Pro is to require a password for network access.

I have a small multi platform home network that I am trying to expand by the addition of a NAS server. I have an iMac 1TB running OS 10.8, a Windows 7 laptop 500 GB and 2 iPads operating over a wireless network with a Netgear DNG2000v2 router, currently using an Iomega 1TB Media Drive for back up. The new NAS is a LG N2A2 2TB which I have initially set up with RAID 0. My aim was to use the NAS as a central cross platform file server while synchronising files with the iMac as back up, allowing cross platform and remote access to files. I generally use iTunes for Media and Picasa for my Photos.

This is probably a straightforward bread and butter problem for network designers but my Internet research seems to be getting me more confused than illuminated.

Is there a way to backup the computers to the NAS while also allowing cross platform synchronisation, file sharing and remote access.

From what I have discovered Time Machine should be avoided because of its expansion to file the external disk size. Synctoy is not OS X compatible.

As the Windows and Mac file structures are fundamentally different what is the solution to this anomaly. Does the solution require proprietary software.

As I have 1TB of data to transfer I would like to get it right from the outset, I would be grateful for some experienced guidance or direction to a suitable source.

It just occurred to me that there are many of us that work on one platform on our desktop, but different on our phones or tablets.

Does anyone know of any source for lists of applications that can utilize the same data on each environment? I am thinking that a good cross reference would be good to help us select applications on each environment and if some resource became popular enough, it could lead software vendors to support a variety of data formats in each environment they support, or provide import/export capabilities to support those of us who use multiple platforms.

My personal preference is to use open source or free/inexpensive software, but the need becomes greater when tools in those realms don't exist.

If nobody knows of an existing source, I think I might start something... A listing of programs that can share files for two or more of the following platforms would be a start:

Windows Desktop
Windows Metro (or whatever they are calling it)

In my mind, a program would be included if any of the following applied:

a) Versions exist for multiple platforms
b) Works via web
c) Works directly with files from an app on a different platform
d) Exports files to standard formats for use by others (comma delimited, xml, JSON etc)

My personal ideal would be to have an app in each environment I use that exploits the interface of that environment well, and shares data transparently with an app on one of my other devices. For me, I also want apps that ... Read more

Ok, here's a stumper for someone:
I am making some c++ programs, that I plan to port to linux and Mac OSX. Currently, I am running windows, and trying to work on the framework stuff. One thing my program has to do is stor file/folder names in a file that can easilly be edited to allow end user mods to be released. I was thinking of mabye storing them in an INI file, but came across 2 problems:
1. I don't know how to deal with INI files in my program
2. I want to make it able to recompile on other systems, without having to recode much, if anything. (GUIs are GTK+, All ANSI/ISO C++ code, etc)

So... should I use INI files, or mabye something like XML? And where can I find more information on these protocols?

A:C++, INI, and Cross Platform

The Windows platform discourages use of INI files without good reason in my opinion. Although you won't be able to use the built-in Win32 APIs for reading to and writing from INI files on other operating systems (see GetPrivateProfileString( ) in MSDN documentation), INI files are fairly simple. There are sections marked as a name in square brackets ( [ ] ) and key name / value pairs separated by equal signs within (Key=Value). The files themselves are usually ASCII and can be read as any other file. The difficulty (and its not a BIG difficulty) comes in parsing the values you're reading. I would suggest seaching a site like planet source code ( http://www.pscode.com ) for examples of reading from and writing to INI files on various platforms if you're uncomfortable writing the code from scratch.

I've been doing tons of research, but cannot find a good answer anywhere. I need to encrypt a USB thumbdrive with the below requirements:

- It must be compatible (able to read and write to) with both Windows and Mac OS, so it must be formatted as exFAT (correct me if I'm wrong), thus this means I cannot use the inbuilt Disk Utility that comes with Mac OS, since it doesn't allow you to encrypt exFAT

- The Windows computer that I am planning to use it on will not allow me to install any programs on it, nor will I have administrator privileges, because it is a work computer. I looked at programs like Truecrypt, Veracrypt, Bitlocker, but while they all have the option of installing a portable version of the software on the USB thumbdrive itself, they still require some form of installation on the computer you are planning to decrypt the USB thumbdrive with. So these won't work either

Do I have no choice but to buy a pre-encrypted USB thumbdrive in exFAT format? Thanks!

I have both a Mac running OS X and a PC running Vista Home Premium. I had to reformat my PC, and I am having difficulty restoring my network settings.

Right now, I'm able to access my PC ("KrustyLu") from my Mac ("Cockamamies"), but I am unable to do the same in reverse. I've got an icon for the Mac in the Network window, I can ping the Mac from the PC, iTunes finds my shared library there -- I know they're hooked up correctly. My firewall settings are configured appropriately.

However, when I go to authenticate, and I enter the username and password, the authentication window spits back at me, changing my "Username" entry to "KrustyLu\Username." Before I reformatted, I didn't need to have anything entered but "Username" and my password. I try entering that again, and it comes back at me with a login failure and "KrustyLu\Username" staring at me in the face. I've tried entering "Cockamamies\Username" with no luck.

Is there a setting somewhere that I've missed, or some extra step I need to take in order to enter JUST my Username and password? I'm sure it's something silly that I've just forgotten about, so any tips would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Turns out the bug that won the $10,000 prize for hacking a Mac can also affect Windows computers. The Mac was "owned" by using Java through Safari to exploit a vulnerability in Quicktime. See story below as to how this works.Firefox, IE and Opera on a Windows computer are known to be at risk. Whether this can lead to full system compromise is still to be determined. I wrote a program in Visual studio that uses a GUI with a browse function to pick out a file for another process. The program was written on a windows 2000 machine, and everything works as intended. The problem I'm having is when it is run on a Windows NT 4 machine, the browse function only returns folders.

I found the reason for this, at least I think I have; according to the help files online in the MSDN library, the browse structure uses Shell32.dll to operate. In order to browse for files, the computer must have at least version 4.71 of Shell32.dll, and NT 4 only has version 4.0. We tried updating the NT machine to the latest service pack, but it didn't update that file. After some more research, I found that when internet explorer 4.0 (possibly, might be a different version) is installed, it also updates this file, but that's the only way that they mention. My boss also tried to just copy the .dll from my windows 2000 machine and paste it over his own, but shell32.dll is apparently always in use, so he couldn't.

The problem with that is I don't want to have the 6 people that need to use this program go through all the irritation of downgrading IE, then upgrading back to where they were. It seems non-sensical to me that they would make it so difficult to update this file. Does anyone know of a way around this, without forcing everyone to upgrade to windows 2000?

A:visual c++ cross platform problem

As long as updating shell32 won't break anything, you need to check out KB Q181345 for the technique to slide a new file in. There is also a tool in the Resource Kit to replace files in use at the next boot, see KB Q184408

I do not own an Xbox one or an Xbox 360, but my friend has an Xbox 360 and I have a windows 10 gaming PC. I was able to add him as a friend and send messages, but I see that a number of games do not show up in the windows 10 or Xbox one section of the store through the Xbox app or the windows store. So I have a couple of questions that I could not find any answers to through google.

First off, would a windows 10 PC be able to play games online with an Xbox 360 user?

Second, is it possible to do the cross-platform play if I do not own any Xbox consoles?

Third, will the steam versions of the game work for cross-platform play? Or must it be purchased through the Xbox app or windows store? (If through the Xbox app, then would I look in the Xbox one section or the windows 10 section?) [If through the windows 10 section in the Xbox app, would the Xbox one section games be playable if bought without the console?]

Fourth, If I am understanding correctly, older games (most on Xbox 360) will not work for the cross-platform play, and newer games (most, if not all on Xbox one) would work for cross-platform play?

fifth, regardless of my specific situation, would GTA: V work for cross-platform play with windows 10 to Xbox live players?

Thank you to anyone who takes their time to read and answer all my questions!

A:cross-platform play questions

As far as I know the XBOX app for Windows 10 is not actually for playing games on the PC. It is more like a remote desktop client for the xbox (either xbox one or 360). In other words you actually have to remote in to the xbox one or 360 - it will not play games as a standalone device.

I am looking for a software program or free online service that will allow two specific things. First, a FAST file transfer system for sharing large PowerPoint presentations, resources, etc. with the other group members. And second, a sort of "collaborative whiteboard" where everyone can write/type/draw and it will appear on everyone's computers. The system must be free and EASY FOR OTHERS TO INSTALL. Also, it must be cross-platform. Any information would be helpful. Thanks!

A:Cross-Platform Collaboration/File Transfer

File transferring can be done with emailing. How fast it is depends on your (or group members') connection speed. Many free email services now offer 1gigabyte of storage space or more.

A "collaberative whiteboard" that is able to display input from multiple users simultaneously on all person's screens sounds like an instant messanger. There are plenty that work on various operating systems. Just google and pick.

Since I'm wondering about what exactly you are looking for, are you trying to figure out a way to use something like this as a program on group members' computers? I see a link that refers to a "student response system", but I'm not sure if there is a free, online alternative to this crazy expensive equipment.

Perhaps there is an online java based program that is already out there or could be made? Maybe something like this?

If any of this helps you out, or you need more info, please post back. Thanks!

HPDM doesn't provide functionality of building a image, tt just simply do capture and deploy. The factory image which include all the drivers are built by HP WES R&D, there should have person who can help you, but as far as I know there is no document to log the detail steps. I would suggest you raise an impact ticket to HP for help. MDT cannot be used to deploy image provided by HP. When build the image, no matter it's a factory image or Thinupdate captured image, HP has done some customization in/after imaging process. I don't think MDT can identify and even proceed these customizations.

I'm thinking of getting myself some retro hardware with serial connections on them. This is as opposed to getting PS/2 because PS/2 can slip off easily, whereas serial connections can be screwed together. I've done the research and know that USB to serial adapters can solve this. However, I narrowly missed what could have been a major faux pas insofar as my competence as a computer engineer is concerned. Can I plug a serial peripheral originally intended for a Mac into a PC via a USB to serial adapter and it will function (assume the buttons are remappable)? The logic side of me says yes because a serial connector is similar to an RJ-45 connector in that the pins are predetermined by some industry standard to work in a specific way across all platforms and it's just the application of said product that will determine how it will function. However, I, also, know that American cars require American socket sets to be able to tinker, adjust, or repair said car.

Feel free to throw in any advice insofar as PS/2 peripherals are concerned as well. I may not care for that interface. But, I welcome the information.

Hello, recently here at work we've been having more and more trouble with the "Could not reconnect all network drives" popup when users log on to their computer. All network drives have a red cross on their icon in explorer. It's a wired network.
I've tried enabling the "Always wait for the network at computer startup and logon" policy under Computer Configuration/Administrative Templates/System/Logon in the Group Policy Editor, but this didn't help. Updating the driver for the network card also
didn't help.
Once a user clicks on a network drive it instantly becomes available and stays available until the next reboot. The problem is that users have got programs which rely on having connection to certain network folders. So now they first need to open windows
explorer and click on each network folder to get it connect before they can open their program.
I've noticed users getting this error more and more after changing from 3com switches to cisco 2960 switches.
Anyone any ideas? (Switching back to 3com switches isn't an option)

A:Red X (cross) over network drive on startup, Could not reconnect all network drives.

Hello, thanks for your help. I seem to have found the problem. The switches are configured for spanning tree, now after changing the port where I'm connected on to use spanning-tree portfast instead of normal spanning-tree the problem disappeared. It
seems the spanning-tree protocol causes a bit of a delay which explains why the network folders don't connect. But it also seems that the GPO
Configuration\Administrative Templates\System\Logon\Always wait for the network at computer startup and logon.
Doesn't wait for a logical signal because if you read the GPO description I would expect it to wait for a network connection to our domain but it seems it only waits for a signal and not a domain signal, if you know what I mean.
Thanks again for your help.

The typical "answer" to this "problem" if you ask google is 1) reinstall windows or 2) uninstall the Trusted Platform Module (TPM) software. You may read that it is an "extra" driver you accidentally installed.

Not true.

These errors come when you have installed the TPM but have not enabled the BIOS settings that activate it.

To get rid of these errors and take advantage of the added Trusted Platform Module (TPM) functionality, you need to activate TPM in your BIOS. Instructions are here:

On my desk top computer it says that pure network platform service is not working therefore I can not connect to the internet on it. Is there anything I can do to get my internet to work? I only have this laptop till Tuesday so hopefully I can get some help before then!

A:pure network platform service

is this laptop a company laptop ?
can we have details on your setup , router etc - make and models
is this a home network ?

You do not need the service to run to gain access to the internet - what windows version do you have on the PC
Vista, XP, windows 7
you can use the windows utility - there is often a lot of conflict between the pure network service and windows services - hence the questions above

Heres a FAQ answer from cisco on that service not running
explains how to remove and re-install - i would just uninstall - AGAIN as this is not your laptop - then the owner may not want that to happen

As you see here
the recommendation is to uninstal - BUT if this is a company computer or someone elses that may not be possible - again hence all the questions that we need answers to

I have a wireless home network set up but unfortunately the desktop PC I use for most of my CAD work does not have a wireless adapter and it would be more trouble than it is worth to run a wire to my home office. I am wondering if it is possible for me to have my laptop connected to the wireless network and have a second wired network set up in the office through a router and have the laptop feed the connection to the desktop through the second network. I attempted to google the question but couldn't think of a way to word it, or what the setup would even be called.

Anyways, thanks in advanced

Edit: fixed some spelling errors

The Network Icon (wired) in my Task Tray has a Red Cross against it. No error shown in Device Manager. Network Diagnostics don't find an error and I don't seem to have any issues LAN or WAN but Automatic Windows Updates are not working. Manual Updates are OK and all the associated services seem to be running. I don't know if these two are connected.
