I have a huge problem with a B590 Notebook: I replaced the harddisk for a test installation of windows 10. This was already quite a pain in the youknowwhat, since it didn't want to boot from USB-stick. I was able to solve that by changing a boot-option in the BIOS to 'legacy' and changing the boot-order and could continue with the windows 10-installation. Then I wanted to reinstall the old harddrive and run the original windows 8 again. Unfortunately the computer doesn't seem to recognize the original harddrive a boot-device anymore. Instead it seems to search for a boot-device on the network (in an endless loop). The problem now is, that I can't access the BIOS anymore. Pressing F1 as stated on the boot screen has no effect (just like pressing F2, F10, F12, ESC, Enter, AnyKey). My next idea was entering the BIOS from the still running windows 10 installation (By pressing Shift+Restartbutton.) Strangely there is no 'UEFI Firmware settings'-option So how can I enter the BIOS to check the boot-settings/order on this notebook? Thanks!

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system
It's worked out well for many of us in the past.
You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)
Hi I have changed boot order and also I have disabled UEFI in order to install linux on other partition(not done yet). as I always do on other laptops. But now after changing to legacy mode I cannot access BIOS anymore. I got pxe-e61 error. OK so I insert USB linux drive and it is working properly with live boot. But I realy need to boot Windows, but it is not possible becoŠuse of UEFI being turnd off. Also It is not possible to access bios, because BIOS was accessed from recovery windows menu, whitch doesnt load anymore. Also when it is booting up (lenovo logo) I press esc (no other keys are workind) which open menu where I "can" boot to BIOS. So I press F1 menu dissapears but I end up with same PXE-E61 error. Any advice how to enter BIOS and change it back to UEFI mode ? thanks
I hope you meant to say Lenovo B590, because I cannot find any reference to a Lenovo G590 Not sure why, but others have reported that to regain access to the BIOS, you have to do the following. remove the battery and power, then remove the back panel.remove the BIOS battery. See page 44, 45 and 52 of the Hardware Maintenance Manualleave it for a couple of minutes (I would say 5 minutes or more).replace the BIOS battery and the cover, then the battery and then the powerBoot up and use F1 / F2 to go into the bios Hardware Maintenance Manual Lenovo B590https://download.lenovo.com/pccbbs/mobiles_pdf/b590_hmm_en.pdf I hope it works for you too. Hello everyone! I ama new user and i am coming up with this post as I couldn`t find any kind of solution for my problem.Recently I decided to do a reinstallation of my operating system, which also previously was Windows 7 Ultimate (x64). The installation went as usual, and after finishing it I went on to install all the latest drivers from the Lenovo site, for my product. When getting close to installing almost all the drivers i`ve needed, i stumbled upon a new version of the BIOS amnd the drivers and sfotware recommended for my laptop, by the producer. So i proceeded to install the upgrade, restarted the computer when it prompted me to do so, but after the so-called restart the laptop did not boot up as usual. At first it was telling me to not do anything as the BIOS is being flashed and then it was telling me something about some sort of image processing, things that i did not understand at the time (i have never encountered anything like that). After that my screen turned black. I have not done anything for a few couple of minutes as i thought it was supposed to be like that, but then i just force shut it down and unplugged the AC adapter. When trying to boot it all up again, the only thing i got was a black screen and nothing else. After doing a little bit of research it appears that, somehowm i`ve managed to corrupt the bios on my laptop or something, and nothing else would work at this point. I tried to remove the BIOS battery and the ram and then put them all back, trye... Read moreRead other answers
hello i have upgraded from win to win 8 pro.i have the sony vaio F11Z(2010 year model).with win 7 i have access in my bios with F2 key.but know i can't anymore.what can i do?i have the old traditional bios
Win 8 has a "quick boot" feature that basically bypasses the BIOS (or at least does not let you in) on power up. If you do a "restart" then you can access the BIOS normally.
There is a work around that will allow you to disable the "quick boot" function so that it boots just like Win 7 did and you can access the BIOS.

I just built my first PC last week and things have been fine for the most part. A few little problems here and there though. This might be a little long-winded but I would rather give as many details as possible.
My problem started with finally organizing my cables and peripherals. I plugged in my 2 external hard drives (2 different Seagate drives) into 2 rear USB 2.0 connectors and when I booted up, my computer kept going straight to BIOS without me touching any buttons. I would try to exit BIOS and start windows but I would keep looping back to BIOS everytime. When I unplugged them before I booted up, my pc would be fine. I could also access the data on the drives when I plugged them in after the boot.
I posted somewhere else about my issues and someone recommended disabling my usb and usb 3.0 legacy support. They also recommended updating my BIOS if it wasn't up to date.
Sure enough, I went into my BIOS and my version was 1.20 (newest version is 1.30). While I was in BIOS, I disabled my USB and USB 3.0 legacy support. Saved and exited and my computer booted up.
I downloaded the windows option for BIOS and tried to run it but I kept getting "Error : Firmware does not have flash (AFUWINGUI) support". So one question would be, is this error a big deal? I'm not going to try to install it from windows so I feel like it won't matter. After doing a little research I now see many people recommending not to do a windows installation... Read more
Is your keyboard USB or PS/2? Normally a USB keyboard will not work before booting until you've enabled it in BIOS already. So basically you need to use an older keyboard (or an adapter) the first time, and then enable USB in the BIOS to use your USB keyboard.
changed the hard drive from normal hdd to ssd on this lenovo
now a menu pops up asking for boot device but just flickers when i select dvd or usb

Hello everyone! I have recently ungraded the motherboard of my B590 to HM77 so that I could use it with an Iintel core i5. My question is, is the latest BIOS for Lenovo B590 for both versions of these laptops? I mean, does it support HM77 chip? The current BIOS of the board is very old (2013) and Windows won't switch to Nvida GPU despite it's presense in the device mangager. Thanks and I really appreacite your support!

I'm on a fresh install of 64-bit windows 8.1, but the BIOS installer gives the following error message: "Your machine does not match with this BIOS. Update process will be halted." Why on earth is this? I googled the error message but this only seems to be a problem with people trying to upgrade the BIOS from win 10... but I'm definitely on 8.1, it even says Windows 8.1 Build 9600 in the corner. The only modification I made is that I upgraded the ram to 8 GB (from 4 GB), but the BIOS update fails even if I take the extra stick out.Read other answers

"anymore" being the key word. I have Windows 2000. I used to be able to get into bios by hitting either the F2 or the F8 key; I don't remember which at the moment. Additionally, during boot-up or whatever it's called, there used to be a message on the screen instructing the user to hit F2 or F8 for bios, but that message is no longer there; or I can't see it if it is.
When I hit F8 now, all I get is a screen listing options such as Safe Mode, but no option for bios. When I hit F2, I get no result at all; the machine just continues to boot. I am both confounded and frustrated; confounded in that I used to be able to get into bios with no problem; frustrated because now for some reason I can't. And I need to. Any help would be appreciated.
I have a Dell PC, but it's out of warranty, so I can't ask Michael for help. Thanks.

Hello. I'm not sure if I'm asking in the right place. If I'm not, I apologize.
Here's the issue. I have an eMachines eM350 netbook that used to be able to boot from a flash drive, until now. I have a flash drive that is dedicated to installing an OS via USB, and recently I've been looking to reinstall Xubuntu as a dual boot, but for whatever reason, my BIOS won't even recognize the drive anymore as USBHDD, and any other drive I use is categorized as USBFDD, even using the same model (Lexar 16GB S70)
Windows is still capable of recognizing the flash drive (Lexar 8GB S70), but not the BIOS.
What do I have to do so that I can boot from a flash drive again?
Try creating your Linux Live USB pendrive with LiLi - Linux Live USB Creator. http://www.linuxliveusb.com/
If it does not work with your Lexar pendrive, try another brand pen drive.

So the problem is: I wrote Ubuntu to an Usb stick, because my friend needed it on her laptop. The program i used: LinuxLive. There was an option wether i wanted to create a virtual disk or not. I didn't know what that was, so i chose this option. After the progress i had an extra E: virtual disk on my computer. I didn't know what to do with it, so i just deleted the files in it. Then when i restarted my computer there was a booting problem, Windows wouldn't boot. So i plugged the usb stick into my laptop, and booted Linux from it. I started a program called G-Patrition. There i deleted the virtual disc, and restarted. Windows booted, it worked perfectly. But when next i started my laptop the usb stick was still there and I accidently clicked on "Install Ubuntu". So a window came up with some settings and started the installation, i clicked on the X to close it, but it froze. After a half an hour the same frozen screen was there, so i pressed the power button to shut down. It was a stupid thing beacause now my BIOS can't boot from HDD. The only boot option is the CD/DVD or USB. It says "Reboot and select proper Boot device
or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press any key..." The interesting thing: When boot from USB Try Ubuntu Without Installing, Ubuntu sees the Hard Drive, but i can't see the contents and folders in it. First problem is that I tried after some time to get into the BIOS(Have the last version of BIOS lenovo offers) and couldn't get with any of the known keys. Delete and F2 go into windows boot menu, F8 goes into hdd boot menu and F12 into advanced windows menu(with safe mode, repair etc). I might have mixed up which key does what but in the end none of them goes into BIOS. Second problem,at my father's office there's an hdmi LCD TV that I've previously used as a second monitor extending the laptop's.But I haven't used it in a while and now it doesn't get recognized anymore.I have latest drivers in both Intel and Nvidia. When i press detect in the Screen Resolution menu I get two small grey monitors(displays not detected, one for each graphics chip). Any ideas? Thanks
I have very similar problem. Y50-70 and no key will take me into the BIOS. F2 is totally ignored, does nothing when you tap it during boot up. Always goes to Windows 10 login. F2 worked fine previously and would enter BIOS, but no more.Read other 1 answers
I recently updated the bois on my Alienware x51 from 4 to 14(?) and the computer wouldn't allow me to login after it restarted, it asks for the computer to reboot and a proper boot device to be selected.
I had to put my windows 8 install disk in and search for my windows key. I didnt have a windows 8 key (the computer was factory refurbished and bought from an authorised reseller, and I wasnt provided with a key.) So I bought windows 10 and tried installing that. It loads the files and accepts the product key. The computer then prompts me to remove the windows 10 usb, and restart the computer normally. The computer boots and asks to reboot and select the proper boot device, which restarts the process.
With the other install option (custom install) I have the option to choose where to install windows, however none of the drives have enough room (I think, because I cant click next on any of them) and I'm unsure which, if any to format.
I dont care about anything thats on the computer, I just want it working again.
Cheers for any help
Got a New BIOS update available notification a couple days ago, did the update and the update was completed successfully. Then after shutting down and when I tried to start my laptop last day, it is not working. No response at all, no sounds, no LED, no fan sound.
Any idea how to fix this?
Hi guys, few hours ago I was playing Battlefield 3 multiplayer match, I won, but then my computer frozen. "big deal, it happens" so i restartes computer and BUM "please select bootable device, blah, blah, blah".
I went to the bios and it seems that it does not see my HDD any more, which is weird, because it was working few minutes ago.
My HDD is only FEW DAYS OLD, 1T seagate. When I am turning on computer, the HDD is working, i can hear the spinning sound, and no other strange voices..
So what do you think about it ? Any solutions?
Thanks for any reply.

This is my first post here and I'm glad to have found this forum with so many helpful people. I am typing this from my iPhone since I'm having troubles with my laptop, so sorry in advance for bad typing.
So recently my gpu failed (8800 GTX M) and I ordered a replacement. After I replaced the faulty card the laptop was running beautifully for 2 days. Today while playing call of duty the game crashed with A directx error. Thinking it was just a random thing I restarted the laptop And it wouldn't boot up anymore. Not even the Dell splash screen appears anymore.
Shocked I disassmbled the whole laptop and put it back together. After this the Dell splash screen appeared again, only once though. Now I'm back at a black screen with nothing loading at all. I am super frustrated right now, and have no idea what itmight be.
Hope someone can help,
Does the laptop have integrated graphics?
If so remove the graphics card and see if you get the splash screen.
Odds are it has something to do with the new card.
I need some help here. I have 2 partitioned drives on the same hard drive (C: & E. I was transferring some video files from my C: to E:. My comp just suddenly froze and i hit the power button which immediately turned my comp off.
Now when i turned it back on, after the bios loading screen, the screen just turns blank. Theres still a video connection because the monitor is still on. The hard drive seems to still be showing up in the bios.
I've tried booting in safe mode, but it wouldn't let me into the safe mode options.
I've also tried inserting the vista cd and booted off that, but after that green loading bar, it turns blank (still with video connection).
I've also tried taking out the hard drive and plugging it into my other comp as a 2ndary drive running vista too. For that, it gets the the green loading bar, but then turns blank. But when i remove that 2ndary drive out, vista boots back up normally.
So im guessing something is wrong with the hard drive.
I really need some help here cause i need some files off that hard drive.
It doesn't matter if i reinstall windows vista, but i just need to be able to read the hard drive and copy some important files.
I'm using Windows vista 32bit, western digital sata 320gb hard drive(1 with the problem), evga 650i mobo.
Any help or recommendations would be great

I have very limited knowledge as far as computer goes so please try to explain any solutions as if you were explaining them to a child. Earlier today I went to rearrange my desk and put my tower on top of it, so of course i unplugged everything because it was all running through my desk. I reconnected everything clicked power up with the side panel off because its a warm day and my fan didn't seem to be doing the trick. It was odd my computer didn't go through the normal system BIOS or do the loading windows XP screen thing. It did however load my background and i could move my mouse and right click the screen and it would bring up the usual properties and such menus. But the big problem is, all my desktop icons are gone, the task bar is gone, and ctrl+alt+delete is not working.
I tried putting in my drivers disk and my windows XP CDs to see if i could reformat. Note I have never reformatted, so whether that was the right thing to do or not could vary. Either way I can't find a solution, there doesn't seem anything left to lose with it so ill try any suggestions or ideas. Thank you for your time.

I have tried it on IDE 2

I've upgraded my XPS 13 9360 with the SAMSUNG 960 Pro a few weeks ago. It worked well with BIOS Rev. 1.0.7 in AHCI-Mode. Yesterday, I performed an BIOS-update to version 1.2.3. The SSD stopped working immediately (no bootable device). Changes of the BIOS settings (No SATA, AHCI, RAID) do not change that behaviour at all. It is even not possible to reinstall the OS, the installer show the SSD but does not allow to reinstall Windows 10. Dell support recommends to install the original hardware.
I think that is crazy. While looking for a solution for that problem I found that comparable problems happened with other BIOS upgrades for i.e. Dell XPS 13 9350 before. Dell has serious problems with NVMe SSDs.

Hello everyone, the following happend:I wanted to re-install my windows 10 on the x240, as it was giving some problems (very slow at shutting down, sometimes blue screen).I updated the bios first, but it gave me an error message.I nevertheless went to re-install Windows 10 ( via Windows 10 Click 'Start > Settings > Update & security > Recovery'), but about half way through the process, it gave an error message. After that when I started the laptop, I could only get into the bios, but not into windows. F10 shows that there is no hardware problem, and pressing F11 (the original pre-installed installation) does not lead to any reaction. The support from the place where I bought the x240 tried to update the bios from an external drive as well tried to re-install windows from an external drive. both failed, and they told me to seek solution with Lenovo.what can I do?Best,BarbaraRead other answers
I encountered some problem with my netbook (Portege M800-10W) after updating BIOS.
The BIOS updating program seems to failed. Then my Netbook automatically restarted and now I can't start my PC anymore.
All the LEDs turns on, but the sreen remain black and after few minutes, the netbook beep 3 times (1 long, 2 short).
How can I restore the BIOS to the previous version (or factory version) ?
I think that error code means there is a Graphical/Video problem. The Mainboard or VGA Board may need replacing, or there may be a loose connection.
I would send the notebook to an ASP for repair.

The only thing different is that I have a Gigabyte GA-K8NS-939 motherboard.
I have used Bios Flash files before on other motherboards and experienced no problems... but as of 2 days ago, the problems began.
I'll start with the beginning:
I was playing Battle Field 2 when suddenly my pc crashed into a BSOD.
I rebooted the machine and it worked again...then after a few minutes again a BSOD, but now when i rebooted it said the Windows\System folder was not accessible or missing. I should repair this with the Windows Installation CD.
So i did. Repairing worked according to Windows, reboot, same error message.
I ended up with a complete re-installation of Windows, no problem there since my pc was getting a little bit slower and reinstallation was inevitable in the near future.
But then the second problem came. My Videocard (ASUS A9250-128 MB) did not have the right drivers so i installed them. Still i couldn't play Battlefield2 which made me sad. I had tried everything else but nothing worked.
So, someone mentioned a Bios Flash. I had done that before on other motherboards with success so i thought, piece of cake, done in 2 minutes.

I'm using IE8 on Windows Vista Home Basic on a Dell laptop. I have wireless broadband (with a USB device).
There is a website/forum that I access every day and 3 days ago it just stopped letting me in - Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage.
I've deleted cookies/browsing history, system recovery/restore, dns flush, tried it on Firefox, resetting IE.....lotsa things that I tried when I called my ISP and NOTHING worked!!
I can access this website at an internet cafe, no worries. So it must be something to do with my computer...
I tried pinging the website (and IP address for it) and I got: timed out...
I think I have McAfee security, but it may need to be updated. I think my comp only came with a trial version perhaps, but i cant afford $100 to update it...
Does anyone know what may be causing this problem? How can I fix it? I get on this forum EVERY day and i'm not coping very well without it!!

Problem solved! There were 2 network connection active, Local Area Connection and 1394 Connection. As soon as I disabled the 1394 Connection, things were back to normal. Suggestion came from another forum
When I try to use my homegroup, I get a message "Enter network credentials." I never needed this before and don't know what the credentials are. The system doesn't provide a way to retrieve my user name and password. How can I do this?
I suspect it's a NIV 2002 problem - it started after the update. I've updated again, but it still didn't help. Removed all temp fils last night (cookies, temp. internet cache, etc). no help. I would like to uninstall NIV 2002, but it won't let me. I also have Norton Internet Security and it won't let me uninstall - I must be a supervisor to run anything on it??! I'm the only one who uses this computer and don't remember having to be a "supervisor". I couple months back I disabled NIS because it updated and I had problems - didn't have to be a "supervisor" then! I would like to remove it becuase I have Norton SystemWorks 2003 and would like to install it as my NIV 2002 subscription ends on the July 26th....... any help is appreciated.

I?m hoping someone can give me a hand with this problem I?m having. This past weekend I was NOT able to log into the site www.google.com anymore. As well, any site that had the name google.com associated to the URL met with the same problem.
When I try to enter www.google.com I get what I consider a fake Google Security page saying that infected files are found on my computer and that they have to be cleaned before I can access their Google site. The page does a quick scan and says that the following infections are present
1. Spyware - Spyware.IEMonster.d
2. Adware - Zlob.Googl.MS.Yah.block
3. Spyware - Spyware.IMMonitor
4. Spyware - St.Worw.Hack
5. Backdoor - Win32.Rbot.fm
6. Trojan - Infostealer.Banker.E
7. Dialer - Dialer.Xpehbam.biz_dialer
8. Trojan - Mail.Spm.Ass.exe
The page then opens up a dialog box asking me to download and run the following program ?Installer_GLE.exe?. I did some research on the net and found that this may be a program to install even more spyware or viruses on your computer.
I also tried doing some research on the net to find if anyone else was having or had the same problem. There were only a few individuals who posted on some other forums regarding this but they never were able to correct the problem.
I have tried running several programs to remove spyware, malware, viruses, Trojans with no luck. I have tried Ad-Aware, Spybot, SpyWare Blaster, AVG Anti-Virus, AVG Anti-Spyware, and Ewido. Some minor issues were detecte... Read more

I disable secure boot changed the boot order from uefi to csm and made my usb the 1st one to be booted.
So now everytime I start my computer it asks from the usb and I can't start it normally anymore please help.
Maybe you need to change it back? When you boot, you can always press a key and get the boot menu if you want to boot from a USB device.Read other 12 answers
I was able to access a PC which is connected to my current laptop on LAN in "full mode", it means I could go to C:\ disk there by entering \\192.168.1.3\C$
But some day ago, I reinstalled that PC and now can't access it's disk C:\ like that. When I do so, a dialog appears to ask password for a fixed user: Guest. (the user box is disable, can't change). So no password is accepted.
And then I login to that PC, run command gpedit.msc, [Computer Configuration] -> [Windows Settings] -> [Security Settings] -> [Local Policies] -> [Security Options], edit item "Network access: Sharing and security model for local accounts" to "Classic - local users authenticate as themselves". This time, a dialog with user name and password editable. But no matches at all.
What's wrong with that sharing? Please tell me how to access that PC like before?
Thanks in advance!
I have a dual boat system with windows 8 and windows 7 on it. Windows 7 has access to the internet without issue. When I try going on the net vis firefox or IE i am unable to access the net. This tells me there is no issue with cable or the router or the net card. When I boot up on win 8 i get the following error:
Could any of this be causing my issue with connecting to the net. I looked under services and do not see a service called "base filtering engine" or "Ipsec policy agent" listed. The other is started and enabled.
If that is not the issue connecting to the net, what could be?
I looked under services and do not see a service called "base filtering engine" or "Ipsec policy agent" listed. This error is not coming up anymore. I had to install the "base filtering engine" via a batch job and that was set to active in services. However, I can not start windows firewall service, dont see ipsec policy agent service and I do not have any access to the unternet.
Hi guys, I'm in desperate need of help!
I'm a regular user of The Student Room forums. As of the beginning of last week, I have been unable to access the site from any of the 3 computers in my household (1 desktop and 2 laptops, Windows XP Professional, with wireless networking; D-Link router connected to cable modem). After about a minute of trying to load the site, I'm faced with a 'The page cannot be displayed' message. I know the site is fully operational, as I am able to access the site from my local library and friends are not having any problems either. I've run AdAware and a virus scan on my laptop, but because the problem is affecting all 3 computers it makes me think it is something to do with my ISP (NTL). I've emailled NTL, but no reply as yet.
I've just heard from a friend that apparently NTL has been causing problems for those trying to access the site, but that's all I know. Why would this be the case? And is there any other possible reason for the problem?
Any help/info greatly appreciated - it's driving me crazy!
Really messed up using the program ReastoreIT, tried to save the Image on one of my Partitions that I also stored most of Programs and Misc stuff.
After, a unsuccessful attempt, I unninstall RestoreIT, at the same time it deleted my Partition G:\ too.
Tried to recover the Partition using Acronis Disk suite and after recovering the Partition , I can't access my partition G:\ , anymore. And I get the error Message above.
Other Partitioning software like Acronis Disk Suite and Paragon Partitioning Manager reports that my MFT ( master file table ) is corrupoted.
How can I recover my Data in my Partition G:\ without losing my stuff in it. Thanks

I bought my Satellite Z930 in August and installed 2GB extra RAM in it. Worked fine, the Ultrabook detected it and had total 6GB of RAM.
Yesterday I stopped ignoring these Toshiba Tempro messages and installed the suggested BIOS Update to Bios 2.20 (don't know which version it was before). Now I have several problems:
*First one*, my Ultrabook doesn't start anymore with the extra RAM. I press the power button, then the power LED starts blinking: 2 times yellow, 1 time orange in loop. The screen stays black and the CPU fan raises to maximum level..Only when I remove the extra RAM, then it starts.
*Second problem*, without my extra RAM it starts, but sometimes with the CPU fan at maximum level. So i have to restart that it stops.
*Third problem*, Windows only detects 2GB of RAM. I have now no extra RAM istalled, so it should detect 4GB of RAM, like when I bought it. Now there are only 2GB...
So is this what happens when I install suggested updates? -.-
So what can I do now? At least I want my preinstalled 4GB of RAm back. Is there any BIOS downgrade, or something similar to revert the changes?
OK, solved the problem. I found a BIOS downgrade to 2.1 at this page: http://www.blog-drivers.com/2012/07/toshiba-portege-z930-notebook-drivers.html
Now I have my 6GB back :)
today i received my new Dell XPS 13 9350. After Upgrading my BIOS to 1.19 and setting up my System I backup my Drive and restored it on the Samsung 950 Pro. But it doesn't boot!
Hour after hour i tested, tried in BIOS etc. and almost gave up. Even Booting from USB to reinstall or Booting Dell Diagnosis didn't worked. But the PM951 SSD worked fine. So lastly I downgraded to 1.0.5 and the 950 Pro worked.....
Question: Where can I find a newer BIOS than 1.0.5 but older than 1.19? I can't find any downloads.
(SEE MESSAGE SENT TO DELL REGARDING THIS ISSUE WITH MY XPS 15 9550)
Replacing the motherboard did not resolve the issue; however, I now have a better understanding as to what's happening:
(tested with 2 SSD's, and 2 HDD's)
(tested with original and replaced motherboard)
(tested with both legacy and uefi boot modes)
(tested with secure boot enabled/disabled)
(tested with original BIOS firmware version, and latest --JAN 5th)
SCENARIO #1 (SATA1 as boot drive, m.2 as secondary) :
-BIOS randomly does not detect SATA1 drive (does not show in System Configuration).
-"No boot device found"' error, followed by dell system check.
SCENARIO #2 (m.2 as boot drive, SATA1 as secondary):
-BIOS randomly does not detect SATA1 drive (does not show in System Configuration).
-Post BIOS, Dell logo with spinner animation will show for more than a minute, and then boot into windows.
-SATA1 drive will almost always show in Windows (even though BIOS does not report it).
SCENARIO #3 (m.2 as boot drive, SATA1 disabled in BIOS):
-Windows boots fast (less than 10-15 seconds)
The SATA1 drive is not always detected/initialized early on in the boot process (BIOS); it is often detected/initialized later on in the process (POST BIOS), but this causes a significant startup delay.
Disable SATA1 in BIOS.
The problem described above makes the SATA1 drive unusable (given its poor stability) as... Read more
I'll try to make this brief.
Two days ago I downloaded new updates for my desktop and laptop. I'm running vista premium 32bit on both machines. I had a friend come over and I uninstalled Mcafee and Symantic anti virus on both machines and installed eset antivirus on both machines. I was able to access the internet. I then downloaded ace utilities and ran all the scans on my laptop (HP). I cleaned the temp files, registry, and everthing else on my laptop. I went to bed and the next morning, and did the same thing to my desktop (Gateway) in the morning, then I realized, both my computers stopped accessing the internet. I had the wave broadband guy come out to take a look today, but he said he could ping the websites and my router, but there couldn't access the internet with my IE browser. When I launch IE, it just keeps saying connecting. I can't even open my router settings in IE. So is something is wrong with my brower? I tried to open firefox and it won't even open the program. I'm wondering if ace utilities deleted something in my registry. I'm connected to my network, but on the network map it show that I don't have access to the internet and that something is wrong with my dns. Do you have any ideas on what I could do?
thanks so much.
Run Vista System Restore - use a restore point PRIOR to the utility install.
START | type rstrui.exe - hit enter
If you used program un-install for McAfee & Norton - not enough. Use the removal tools

I was able to connect to a shared Samsung 2160 with my Windows 7 laptop 2 weeks ago at work. I haven't been able to connect to this printer since last week. When I try to print, nothing happens. I try to connect to another shared Samsung 2160. It looks like its going to connect. And then it says that the path is wrong. I tried to connect to PC by entering the PC name in the Run box. Says the path is wrong. I am still able to connect to these printers via desktop wirelessly. My laptop & desktop where the printer is plugged both have Workgroup as the workgroup name. I have Norton Security. It found 50 viruses last week which I cleaned. And I am connected to the internet when I try to connect to these shared printers. I have some ideas. Like changing the workgroup name of the laptop. Trying to connect by creating a local port. Installing the drivers and then trying to connect. Anyone else has anymore ideas?
Internet used to work fine but has always been a pain to set up. This morning I _suddenly_ had no connectivity anymore whats-o-ever, it worked fine yesterday. I've had this problem before (where suddenly the internet is gone) but this time I've been unable so far to find the culprit.
I am running Win7 32bit Ultimate, on an Asus M3N78-VM motherboard (LAN chip Realtek RTL8211C). I have the nVidia nForce network driver (no idea how I got that, can't find updates either). I am also running Hamachi, perhaps this gives trouble?
Whenever I changed some settings in the network configuration (the LAN adapter -> configure), then when I press close in the adapter window it more often then not freezes. I have to bring it down with the Task Manager, or restart the computer. Same thing whenever I disable / enable the adapter, it just freezes (I must do a hard reset then!).
This is a frustration for long, and I guess the cause of the internet problems. It can have internet but whenever I need to fix it, like now, I just can't get through. The following post used to work: Possible solution for unidentified network access but doesn't anymore (it always freezes when I set the Network Address).

When your computer says it has an IP of 169.254.146.200 or subnet 255.255.0.0, that means it wasn't able to get an IP address from your router's DHCP server.
First thing I would try is "ipconfig /release" then "ipconfig /renew" and then "ping 192.168.1.254" to see if you get a response. If not, "ipconfig /a" again and check to see if your 169.254.146.200 IP was replaced with 192.168.1.xxx.
Let me know.
