Added a bigger hardrive, but how do you move files?

Q: Added a bigger hardrive, but how do you move files?

I just added a 160 gigabyte hard drive as my 30 gig was filling up and giving me messages that it was close to full. I forgot to ask the technician whether it should be formatted any particular way. So that's one question: How can I check if things are set up correctly?

And second: How do I actually move files to the new hard drive? Do I just put a shortcut on the desktop and drag n' drop the old files onto it? Will they completely move from one disc to the other or will it just add a copy if I do it this way?

If it matters I have the basic XP edition windows.

Thanks -- Ed

Preferred Solution: Added a bigger hardrive, but how do you move files?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have installed win XP pro a couple of days ago, and I thought that it would be a good idea to put windows in a separate partition. Since then I have installed a few applications on a different partition, but it is not uncommon for applications to put something in the program files folder anyway.

Is there a safe and easy way of having "my documents" and or "program files" on a bigger partition? Or would that defeat the whole point of a system partition?

Would be glad of some advice.

Tell me if it's a bad idea!

P.S. Is there a way of telling if the system partition is on the outer or inner edge of the HD?

This question may have been posted and answered at an earlier date but I am experiencing some complications that I am unsure how to address. My desktops Hd recently started failing and so today I ordered a new one that is 250gb larger. I understand how to back up most of my files and have an external to do so but I do not have install disk for the windows 7 os as my computer came with it installed. My product key for my os is still on the sticker on the side of the tower but as this new Hd is 100% blank i need to move the os somehow and I am unsure as to how I am supposed to do this. I have read alot about cloning a Hd but am wondering if this is my best option. ANY information on this problem would be greatly appreciated but please keep in mind i am no computer genius, Thank you all for any and all help.

to be safe you need to copy all old HDD partitions on the new, just tell the clone software to don't resize the original partitions, so at the end you will end with 500GB used by the old partitions and 500GB of unallocated partitions. once booted sucessfully to windows on the new HDD, from windows Disk management, you can create the 2 new partitions of the needed sizes. I am running Win7/Pro x64.

I recently managed to unwittingly move a large branch (multiple levels of branching and many files) into my "My Documents" folder. I would like to undo what I did, but I have no idea how I did it. My guess is that I made a massive misuse of drag-and-drop

Said another way, I had a directory (very large, multi-branched folder) called "MyImageFiles" at the same level on my data drive as "My Documents." Now it is buried one level down in "My Documents."

What is the simplest way to undo this?

Is it possible to move the hard drive to the faster pc complete with the operating system and all my files?. The rub is I don't have the org. cds for the xp install.

A:Move Hardrive to different computer?

No, the operating system won't work in the new PC. You would have to do either a repair install (which isn't guaranteed to work anyway) or a full reinstall to use the old Hard Drive in the new PC. Unfortunately both options require the XP CD.

I am trying to move files from one external hard drive to another but it has been stuck on 'Preparing to move' 'Time remaining: Calculating. Items remaining: Calculating Speed: Calculating' for 20 minutes now. It has not moved on from that.

Google shows only results pertaining to Mac OS on this problem, when searching the message in quotes, it still doesn't give that exact match (come on Google, we search in quotes for a reason), instead what Google provided was results for 'Preparing to delete'

There seems to be no info let alone anybody having this message when moving files.

Can anybody help me get the ball rolling?

A:Windows 7 stuck 'preparing to move' when trying to move files

I have Windows 7 pro over here on three computers, and yes I too sometimes but not always get that long long long wait time for either copying or moving folders/files from source to target. For now, I recommend you only copy folders/files from source to target. And after you looked at the target, making sure the copies made it over safely, then delete from the source. I'm trying to recall what and where I saw some good answers, will post back if/when I find those URLs.

Employee claims that while using the Move function to place folders in a different directory tree the folders were moved but the files were lost. I have tried to duplicate the action but have not been able to replicate losing the files. Talked to experts said no way it will happen. One in a million chance it will occur. However, employee claims replicated Move operation multiple times (10-15 folders) and lost files multiple times (7-10 times), but not every time.

Is this possible? I must fire employee for extensive data loss. However, if truly unintentional, and I can replicate as proof-- Employee keeps job.

A:Using Move Function: Move Folders & Lose Files

As the experts you spoke with indicated, there is virtually no way this could happen. Even if there was a copy error that Windows didn't detect and abort the move operation, you'd still likely end up with some sort of file even if it was corrupted and unreadable.

One in a hundred trillion chance of happening.

Heres the role and fix for hyberfil.sys

Windows XP has a feature that is not very well documented and it will be totally new to users of older systems such as Windows 95 or 98. This new feature is called Windows hibernation. Instead of shutting down and restarting your computer, Windows takes a snapshot of everything running on your system, copies it to the hard drive and then turns off most of your hardware. To wake up from hibernation you normally move the mouse or hit the spacebar on the keyboard.

In theory, it is supposed to be a quick shortcut or power saving option that allows you to leave your PC in suspended animation until you are ready to work again. However, in practice, most people find little time difference between shutting down and using hibernation. For people who use drive imaging to backup their system, the hiberfil.sys file can bloat the backup files - making them larger (sometimes over 1GB bigger!) and therefore slower to copy/restore.

Hibernation temporarily 'freezes' the computer when the PC becomes inactive, so it won't work if you have tasks running constantly (eg downloading files). However it can be handy if you want the computer to sleep after a task has completed (such as creating a video).

OK, that's the role of hibernation - so what is the hiberfil.sys file and why is it so big? Hibernation takes everything in memory and writes it to your hard drive as the hiberfil.sys file. If you have 512MB of memory, then hiberfil.sy... Read more

Hey all!
so here's the thing:
i just wanted to transfer some photos that i took with my digital camera to my HD.
i got a pretty big SD card on my camera- 64Gb. It was half-full (~30GB).
after i transfered the files to my PC, the total amount of data was read as 160GB, although each file counted individually is still it's original size. The photos as bulk are being read as 160GB???? HUH?? it's like that with each kind of software, and it stays that way now when i try to transfer them from one HD to another.

what can i do to repair it?

hey everyone

was wonderin if anyone should shed some light on this.. i bought new freeagent seagate 1TB external harddrive .. but since i use my work on mac and pc i needed to make sure i formatted the thing in a format that could be used by both mac and pc.. so i spoke to a bunch of people in the know and everyone suggested Fat32 or "ms dos" format.. anyway it did work and i can use my harddrive on both platforms but unfortunatly i discovered that fat32 cant copy across files that are bigger than 4 gb.. i have two partitions.. i was wondering if

1) it is possible to format a harddrive so that one partition is NTFS and the other is Fat32.. so i could use my music stuff on the Fat32 drive and other stff on the NTFS

2) is there a way that i can format my hardrive with fat 32 so it can copy files that are bigger than 4 gb? and if so where can i find a program that does this?

3) are there any utilities that anyone could suggest that could reformat my drive in either of these cases(i know this is a stretch) without deleting my data.. i dunno i have heard of programs that can do that..

i also have the latest version on hirens boot from a friend but i dont even know where to start with that

any advice would be greatly appreciated

thanks alot..

A:Fat32 Format and files bigger than 4gb

Yes you can have Fat32 and NTFS partitions on one drive
Actually many recovery partitions on new drives are Fat32, whilst the main OS partition is NTFS

But do you already have 2 partitions available on your harddrive?
Or is it presently just one big Fat32 filesystem?

Creating multiple partitions on a drive is done when Windows is first setup (using the Windows setup CD)
Therefore, you are best to backup, and then start again, ie:
Remove the single Fat32 partition
Create 2 partitions
Format one to NTFS
Format the other to Fat32 (or do this formatting later in Windows, drive management)
Install Windows on the NTFS partition

All this (except the backing up) can be done using the Windows setup disc

I am attempting to move folders and files around, doing a little organization on my HDD. However if I attempt to move the loaded folder I get the error message " The action can't be completed because the folder or a file in it is open in another program." However I have no other programs open, thinking it was some hidden process, I killed a bunch of processes in Task Manager, one's I didn't recognize, or I knew were safe to kill.

Not sure if this may be an issue, but my mobo recently went belly up and I had to replace it (with the same type DP67DB for DP67DB) but everything else remained as is- this is the first time I am messing with the files on the "new" machine. Is it possibly an ownership issue, and if so how do I resolve this?

Hi all,

I'm working on a buddy's computer, and he had a nasty virus that infected numerous music files, and several Windows files were infected, as well. I could not boot into safe mode, as it was giving me a BSOD with a 7B stop code (no boot device mentioned, just 7B hex code). It would, however, boot into normal Windows mode. I had Avast move all files except Windows files (which I ignored) to the virus vault on the first run, and after rebooting, the computer still wouldn't run many apps, and has a permanent hourglass by the icon. I then ran Avast again, and moved the infected Windows files to the virus vault. It now acts the same, ando gives me the warning message that logon.exe was not found (one of the infected files). I did a registry clean with regcleaner, but to no avail. The comptuer also still will not boot into safe mode without the BSOD. I'm posting a hijackthis log in hopes that someone can spot something, or maybe something in the above will allow someone to point me in the right direction (or to the right forum, if this isn't it). If you need any other info, please ask, and I'll be happy to provide! photobucket says: Upload failed for photo.jpg with error: A network error caused your upload to fail. Please try your upload again.

ImageShack.us says: No files uploaded immediately

Flickr: Gets to 100% complete then says: Bonk! None of your files made it.
ImageHost works just fine though, and so does uploading them onto myspace and facebook.

I have the following problem:

I swop out harddisks frequently, my bios updates the changes automatically when the change is done and the pc boots up reading the new harddisk just fine, though,

sometimes the harddisk is not detected and when i swop around the jumpers on the harddisk they are detected again and all is fine, windows boots up the hardrive is there and working fine, but no files is showing on the harddisk.

The files is taking up space appropriately (it's showing up as taking up 25 gig of space which is the size of the 3 programs i installed) but nothing shows on the harddisk when clicking on the drive.

This really is frustrating because i have to reinstall all programs and put on all files over again each time this happens.

How can i make XP to show the files again, it obviously knows it's there because it's shows it taking up the space. this is really something i cannot quite understand why it's doing it. The files were there, the very pc created and formatted the drive before i put on anything, how can changing the jumpers make it all dissapear and now the files is not showing.

Disk manager is showing the disk and it's appropriately displaying the disk as should. (healthy and working)

I've encountered a strange problem, have been running Windows 7 for a few years, recently decided to move over to Windows 8 but rather than upgrade I've done a fresh install on a new SSD. There's a couple reasons for this, if I hate 8 I can easily go back to 7 and I also retain the 7 install so I can boot it up and get any files I've missed or find I need at a later date.

There's a total of 4 HDD's in the PC, the boot drive and 3 other data drives. Both OS's have full access to the 3 other drives and I've made the drive letters all the same as well.

Here's where it gets strange, I boot back into Win 7 to retrieve some files, put them on any of the three other drives, shut down and swap SSD drives, boot back into Win 8. I go looking for the files I've just put on let's say the D: drive, but they're gone. Thinking I've somehow screwed up, I shut down 8, boot back into 7 and do it again, this time making absolute certain they're there. Shut down 7, boot back into 8, go to get the files and they're gone again.

Windows 8 seems to notice there's new files that it didn't put there so it removes them. This has also occurred with a dos created .TIB backup file of the old Windows 7 install that I made so I could just access the contents of my Win 7 install without actually having to boot back into it.

Has anyone got any idea what awesome new feature of Windows 8 is seeing these files and nuking them?

A:Win 8 deleting files added outside of Win 8

funny stuff, when i first tried win8 i kept with my usual practice and installed apps to a different partition. upon trying to run a program, it would run, files were missing, when i uninstalled the program, win8 wiped all the program folders in that partition except for a couple.

C: Questions:On 3/21, the defrag analysis log for C: showed that I had Total files = 71,432 and Total folders = 5,086.On 4/5, the defrag analysis log for C: showed that I had Total files = 71,168 and Total folders = 5,073.(Note that this was the log generated AFTER I defragged my hard drive, in which I deleted my temporary internet files prior to.)On 4/9, the defrag analysis log for C: showed that I had Total files = 72,570 and Total folders = 5,086.So that's quite the jump in files and folders. As far as I know, I have not added anything to my computer that would warrant an increase in over 1,400 files and 13 folders! (Of course, some of this could be temporary internet files, so once I post, I'm going to empty those and check what this says again. [EDIT: Just emptied my cache in Firefox -- Total files = 72,036 and Total folders = 5,083 -- so that did not decrease it by much -- still a large increase from 4/5 to now.]I did run SIW 1.67 for the first time yesterday (4/9) a number of times. And I did click on a variety of things in that program that generated lists of files, etc. wi... Read more

A:Why Are Files Being "added" To My D: Partition? (also Q's About Siw.)

Off the top of my head I'd say that the additional files and folders are probably fom Windows System Restore.Windows by defult makes periodic backups of certain files and saves them in a hidden and access restricted folder under the main directory in each drive called System Volume Information. For example, the System Volume Information folder on my C: drive contains 748 files and 15 folders.Windows keeps these backups for a period of time before deleting them. You can control how much space can be used by going to Start->All Programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Restore and click on System Restore Settings, selcting the drive you want to change and then clicking Settings. Move the slider to set the percentage of the drive that can be used for these backups (I use 3%). This is a per-drive setting so you need to set each drive individually.

Hello All,

For whatever reason, I now have 19 files in my startup list that do not seem to belong to any program I've installed. Google does not recognize these either (except for the last one I've listed). They are all .exe files and when I go to msconfig, it says they are installed in my c:\windows\system32 folder, however, when I go to that folder, they do not appear. Any ideas? Any ideas on how to delete them if they do not appear in the folder??? MANY THANKS!!!

Hello old friends.
I got a trojin from ytdownloader or one of the videos I downloaded. It added ".crypt" to the end of all my music, picture and video files making them unviewable. I was told by a pretty good tech friend that I could just rename them without the .crypt exetention and all would be fine. even if I did have to rename every one of my files. It doesn't seem to work. I keep getting black screens with error messages. Running win. 8.1. background pic on the comp. showed up as a text message saying to download bitcoin.com and pay to get files released or wait and pay more. They also gave me a personal id# and a link to 3 web sites ending in .onion.com, I run webroot in the background but apperantly the antivirus was installed but not active. It's active now but to late.
Is there a way to repair my files and make them useable?
I got spyhunter from my tech friend and it found and repaired 89 things and my comp. seems to work and download pics. and stuff fine now and I can view them. I just want to see all the stuff I had on here before.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I just purchased a western digital external hardrive and I want to know if I keep it off most of the time [turn on once a month] can files become fragmented during the time I have it off ? Or does it only happen when the hardrive is on?

A:Can files become fragmented even when the hardrive is off?

Fragmentation is a product of constant read/writing.
Windows sometimes puts bits of the same file in different places,
slowing down read time.

I took my computer into a store and they did the physical install of a new hard drive. I installed everything (Windows and my applications) and I hear there's a setup disk for the hard drive that I have had installed. I bought the bare drive off Newegg. The software is here. In the Downloads section, click Software.

From what I understand, there are three modes of the hard drive, which affect the drive performance/speed. I would like to use the setup files to make these necessary changes, that is, if my drive isn't setup for 'performance', I'd like to set it to do that.

Would doing this wipe out my Windows partition?

My other question is, I did try to burn the setup files for CD to a CD and it did not boot (it just went straight into Windows). I used WinRAR to unzip the ISO and Windows 7 to burn the files to the CD. I checked my boot sequence in BIOS. It's set such at 3 1/2>CD>Hard disk. So, that isn't the problem. I probably burned the disc incorrectly. Can someone show me how?

A:New Hardrive Setup files

Hard drives are controlled by the SATA or IDE storage controller in your Device Manager, a part of your chipset.

The settings in BIOS which may apply are SATA controller settings of AHCI or IDE mode. We recommend installing in the more modern AHCI mode which enables hot-plugging, however IDE mode is fine.

Hard drives like DVD/CD drives can have firmware updates but it is rare and not really needed unless indicated by performance problems.

Are there any performance problems with the Win7 you installed onto the HD?

If not, just make sure you check optional Windows Updates for newer drivers after enabling hardware auto-updating: Automatically get recommended drivers and updates for your hardware. Win7 is pretty good with drivers, having most in its installer or quickly updated via optional Updates.

When the virus hit my computer it started making all my files .html and if clicked it would send me to a spam page asking me to pay money. Now all my image files are .html and wont open...
If I open the image in photo viewer it "Can not open this photo of video. The format is not supported" even if I delete the .html extension. I think the virus added this to all my files... they seem to still be the size they were before so I think the data is still intach but IDK.
Anyone heard of this virus that changes all files to .html extension and is there a way to get my images back? The virus is gone but the damage is done.
Attached: shows how JPG files wont open and are .html extensions that direct to a spam page.

I have a one year old computer running WIndows XP. Each week while running Norton Scan, my files seem to increase by a couple of thousand a month. My computer is not running slow and everything seems normal but I now have 185,000 files on it. I daily delete cookies and temporary internet files using the tools function on the menu. I am not downloading anything other than the updates from Norton and WIndows. This has been happening for about six months. Why are so many files being added? Thank you for any help you can offer.

As I already mentioned in the title i had a BSOD. It was the first time after I formatted my Win 7 professional x64 about a month ago so maybe somekind of driver issues but i wouldn?t know.

basic specs can be found by checkin my forum account and im glad to give any extra information.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

A:BSOD while using VLC (dump files added)

Dump file points to netw5v64.sys as the possible problem. Try updating the drivers for your network card.

If the problem still persists, check your ram using memtest. My pc crashed when I was using VLC once and it was because my ram was faulty.

Hello all.  Hope you can help.  I am trying to diagnose a problem with a friends computer.  All of her data files have been renamed to include the extension .uogltic, for example, dscn0269.jpg.uogltic.  It is very similar to ransomware, but there is no ransom note that we can find.  I have searched high and low for that file extension and come up empty.  I have run malware bytes and it fails to find anything.  Norton AV is also coming up empty.  One other symptom is that the file sizes are all VERY small - i.e. the jpgs are in the 100 to 200 KB range.
Thanks.  Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

A:All files have added extension .uogltic

I have advised our Security Colleagues who specialize in crypto malware ransomware with a link to this topic. Please submit a sample of an encrypted file here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/submit-malware.php?channel=3You can also submit any of the malware files that you suspect were involved in causing the infection. Doing that will be helpful with investigating.

I have just removed an infection from a computer without much of an issue, but the infection has left behind a big problem. It has renamed almost all of the common file types such as .jpg, .doc, .xls, .js, .php, .docx, .ppt, etc. to [filename].jpg.block, [filename].doc.block, [filename].xls.block, etc. I have searched the computer and there are over 10,000 files that have been altered. I have downloaded a free program called Extension Renamer, which makes the process faster than renaming them one by one, but it still will take quite a while to go through all of the different file types. I am wondering if there is a script or program that would be useful to remove the ".block" from all of these files with a more automated or hand free approach?

The situation has gotten worse. I have started renaming the files to remove the ".block" and none of the files work with their original extensions.

The infection that caused this problem is referred to here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic469321.html

I keep on hearing from bunch of different people that when your hardrive keeps a record or rather holds on to files such as cookies even when deleted from the internet options window or in the cookies folder itself. Is this true to any degree or is it just a myth?
If it is true, than is there any software on the web to delete theses hidden files?

A:Does your hardrive still hold on to files even if deleted

Eraser is one such program to clean out any and all deleted disk space.
