I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi,

I'm not sure that the problem is BIOS related. First, see the link below from HP about troubleshooting/fixing display problems.

Unit refuses to boot. I have a double flash indicating corrupt Bios and I have tried the corrections suggested by HP (hard start, W button +B etc) without result. As I had some heating problems I replaced the processor as a first remedy. No improvement. The bios chip is solded on the motherboard so I am looking for a software metod to restore the bios before replacing the motherboard.  Any suggestions?

managed to find the correct way to reflash my bios.  I downloaded the UEFI Support Environment, I used version 5. there might be a newer version now http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=ob-114650-1&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&jumpid=reg_r1002_usen_c-001_title_r0002 then downloaded the latest Bios version for my laptop, the .exe unzips to a SwSetup on the local drive. In that folder are 1 or more .FD files, these are the Bios files. There is also a file called platform.ini, in this file it has the names of what the laptop looks for. You'll find it under [Platform_Check] when you open the file with a text editor. I ran the UEFI support environment and chose to install it on my 4GB usb, it was formatted to FAT32, default allocation size. The software should name it to HP_Tools and have a Hewlett-Packard folder inside it. I put the .FD file that I renamed to what was listed in the platform.ini file (3600 was the one that worked for this specfic laptop) in to the folders: Hewlett-Packard\BIOS\current and Hewlett-Packard\BIOS\previous Just to make sure I also made copies of those files in the same folder and changed their extensions to .bin and .rom. I also made copies of those 3 files to the root of the usb, just because got tired of copying and renaming files. With this usb in my Laptop I held down the Windows key + B and powered it on (make sure the power c... Please can anyone help? I have a Pavilion G6-2240sa that only shows a black screen when I turn it on - with Caps Lock flashing twice and F12 orange. I've read many posts on forums and know this is a BIOS corruption issue. I downloaded the latest (and in fact every) BIOS for this from the official HP support site and put it on a flash drive using the UEFI recovery tool but none of them worked. Every time, when the tool loads up it shows "initializing" then says it failed with reason "Unable to open BIOS image file". Please can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong - are there different files or particular things I need? The files are in the BIOS folder under Hewlett-Packard (as created by the installer). One thing I noticed is that the files for this model only has two .BIN files. Some other models seem to have .sig and .s12 signature files included. Why does this model not have them and can I find them anywhere?

I will try to be as precise as possible and give as much info as I can, but I'm not sure what info is inconsequential and what isn't at this point. But, here goes...

For 2 weeks I have tried to outsmart whoever it is that has had complete remote access to my laptop but changing as many admin permissions and incoming/outgoing connections that I could find to keep them out.

A couple of days ago, I did a system restore to factory settings, thinking this would do it. It didn't; he was still there. He locked me out of all admin tools yesterday.

I have a system recovery disc made about a year ago, and put that in my CD drive tonight, thinking I could completely reformat the drive and wipe him out. However, at start-up, I pushed F2 and came up with a screen that said something about running the disc from E drive (I apologize for not be able to give you specific language but I never thought it would get this far with no progress). However, under the line showing the drive it was booting from, there was another line that started "DETECTHAL /REDIRECT " then went on to say something about "redirect name" and redirect path", none of which sounded legit to me. And considering that this intruder had created so many other fake error/info msgs already, I didn't want to take the chance of this being something else that he had stuck in there.

I backed out of that reboot and restarted. I've subequently tried to restart over a dozen times from the CD, bu... Read more

I know a BIOS update on my Latitude with Windows 8 and Bitlocker activated on the O/S drive triggers Bit locker recovery on startup. I don't have the recovery key and so am stuck. How to recover without the Bit Locker recovery key?

A:BIOS update without suspending Bitlocker has triggered a recovery and on start up I am prompted for the recovery key

The solution I found was to install the previous version of the BIOS, but without being able to boot into Windows, I needed to install the previous version of the BIOS in DOS. Some server products provide a F12 boot up menu option to roll back a BIOS update, but this is not available in my Latitude.

I downloaded the correct BIOS version (the additional info section made specific reference to it being installable from Windows or DOS). I prepared a bootable USB key (to a dos prompt) and copied the bios installer executable to the memory stick.

Because secure boot (UEFI) is enabled, it is not possible to boot up from USB key, so legacy boot mode needs to be enabled. There were 3 settings that required changing in the BIOS before I was able to boot from the USB key.

Once I was able to boot into DOS from the USB key and got to the DOS prompt, I ran the BIOS update exe. The laptop rebooted, installed the previous BIOS version and then rebooted again. I pressed F2 to get into the BIOS and changed back the settings as they were (secure boot UEFI). I then managed to boot into windows without being prompted for the Bit locker recovery key.

You able to export or view the Bitlocker recovery key by going to Control Panel -> Security -> Bit locker Management, and temporarily suspend protection (until the next reboot). It is possible to run a commandlet to specify the number of reboots bit locker should be suspended for.

You may find that installing the previous version of the ... Read more

Hello, i have a really annoying problem: Everytime i start my laptop, it wont boot up. The capslock button is blinking twice so i guess the bios is damaged. First i checked if there is a update for my bios on you driver/software download page but there isnt. So afterward i tried to recover and reinstall my bios but i cant even enter the bios update menu.In the bios recovery manual http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c02693833 it says:With the computer off, press and hold the Windows logo key and the B key at the same time.Still pressing those keys, press and hold down the Power button on the computer for 1 to 2 seconds, and then release the Power button but continue to hold the Windows and B keys until the BIOS update screen is displayed or until you hear a beeping sound (usually 8 beeps). But this isnt working. It only blinks twice continiously but wont boot. Can anyone help me? I cant find further information regarding this issue. I start to get really really annoyed by the problem because sometimes it takes up to 15-20 times to get the laptop running. Best Regards

I have a G42 that I purchased in 2011. When I set it up I repartitioned the HDD so I could segregate music and picture files from the OS.  Apparently, I also disrupted the recovery partition so now I cannot create a Recovery Disk using the installed HP tool.  I have tried the Windows refresh option in Control Panel, but it keeps failing (probably because the recovery partition is gone).  The laptop didn't come with a recovery disk, and the laptop is in dire need of a fresh OS installation. Is there anyway to obtain a recovery disk?

Please let me know if this is not the correct forum to post this question to.

I've got an HP Pavilion 531w that has a recovery partition and then the normal windows partition. The windows partition is corrupt and I can not boot into it, just tells me that NTLDR is missing.

I have tried to get into the Recovery Partition by pressing F10 as it's posting but it just goes into the NTLDR is missing screen.

I can take the HD out of the PC and can access the Recovery Partition with it slaved off another PC but I can not access the windows partition. I called HP to order a set of Recovery CD's they aren't available and suggested that I call Ambry, they don't have them either. I've not been able to locate the set of Recovery CD's searching online either.

Is it possible to create some sort of boot/recovery CD from the Recovery Partiton while it's connected to another PC? I've not found anything suggesting that it's possible. I purchased Partition Table Doctor v3.0 and Drive Image trying to find a way to fix it but have not had any luck. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thank ya'll,

I was stupid - I was swooned by the allure of participating in the Windows 7 beta.
I regret this now.
Now I seem to be stuck with the infernal software, unable to restore to my well-known Vista Home Premium. I have the "FACTORY_IMAGE" Partition still, yet, the Windows 7 installation removed my HP Recovery manager (And their little "F11" trick at startup" - seriously, Microsoft, messing with my BIOS now?). I have all the files neccesary for a restore to original settings...but no software to IMPLEMENT this restore.I don't have a recovery CD (And I'm only just interviewing for my job), and I can't shell out 20$ for a recovery CD from HP, is there any way to access this vital partition to remove the reminder of windows 98 from my PC?

Hi -

I got the part about Vista and Windows 7 - but got lost with the mention of Windows 98. Where does it come into play here?

I have an HP dv7-1020us that came with Vista SP1 x64 and loaded Windows 7 x64 on to it and overall have not had any problems with Win 7. In fact I like Win 7 very much. Due to warranty issues, I had to return to Vista x64 for a brief period and found the recovery partition to be useless. I ended up ordering the recovery DVDs for $20 and experienced no problems.

Have you tried to press ESC during boot-up? ESC is mentioned on my start up screen - not F11. If your recovery partition is in fact intact, you should be able to revert to Vista - however, the boot sector may be a problem. Your system now knows that is has run Win 7 and may have upgraded your Vista license. I have not seen too many cases of this, but in theory it could happen eventhough Win 7 is beta.

Try the ESC key if not already done so. You may also need to modify the boot sector - here is an MS KB on that topic -

It is possible that others will come upon this thread and be able to offer alternatives. I wish you the best of luck.

Hi: You can see if HP sells recovery media for your PC by entering the product number in the box at the link below. The product number can be found on the same sticker as the serial number. http://h22207.www2.hp.com/us-en Once you get to the support page for your PC, select the W8 driver option, and then the last item on that page should be a link to order recovery media if HP still offers recovery media for sale for your model PC.

I was having problems with my HP Pavilion dv5000 Notebook, so I decided to do a PC Recovery that recovers software that was preinstalled when I purchased the computer. I lost all my saved files (emails, pictures, etc.), and this process didn't correct the problem I was having before I did it. It won't let me do a system restore. There are no dates highlighted before I did this recovery for me to restore to. Can I reverse what I did? If not, can I at least find the missing emails and pictures somewhere on my hard drive? I was so stupid, and I really need to fix this problem ASAP. If anyone out there can help me, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
JLoo

You could try recuva - http://www.recuva.com/download and run a scan. It gives a list of deleted files and whether or not they can be recovered. It is a free program

Ok, I am trying to do a system restore rather than a factory reset for my laptop. I cannot access the system recovery tool as it is greyed out, and after reading some other blog posts here and trying their solutions, none of that is working either. I have a recovery partition on the d: drive, plus a memory stick as well; When I run recovery media creation, all it does is take me back to the recovery screen where restore is greyed out. I've tried doing the f11 boot trick, and all I get is an option to start windows normally: it does NOT give an option to do a recovery or reset. For the love of christ, can someone tell me how to un**bleep** this thing so I can get this done? And I dont want guesses, I want a REAL solution.

Hookersandblow Hello;Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums! System Restore does NOT do what most folks think it does.  Most folks thing it sends the PC back in time to the restore date -- but that is NOT what is does.  When you do a Windows Update, a copy of all the system files that are being overwritten is saved.  When you do a System Restore to that date, all it does is overwrite the current system files with the copy that was saved.  If that is what you want done, you do NOT have to use HP Recovery Manager to do that; instead, that is an MS function you can invoke yourself. If this is not what you want done, please provide some details on what you want to accomplish. We can proceed when you provide the information. Thanks

Hi friends My HP Pavilion 10 TS notebook PC partition D recovery is almost full and slowing down my computer. I have read that normally you should not touch that partition but also everyone keep posting that does not take much space of the disk.  Well, in my Recovery partition (D) is 19 GB size where 17.4 GB are taken already.  I did the RESTART PC option and the laptop still slow. Any advice?  Thanks

I have a 5 year old Pavilion that has recently been suffering from BSOD. The problem has been occurring since the recent addition of a Bluetooth usb dongle from Radio shack - that had accompanying software called BlueSoleil.I wanted to see if uninstalling the software resolved the issue - however after uninstalling the software my laptop once again failed and forced me into a system backup and recovery.I've followed the instructions and have run the reset to factory default process. Now after 20 minutes or so - it still has not restarted windows - and is sitting on the starting windows logo. How long dose the initial restart take after recovering? It seems as though something is not right.

I'm not particularly computer literate but I can follow directions pretty well. Except when I'm in my ADHD mode. Trying to restore HP Pavilion after son crashed it apparently trying to install a video card, he said. I think I may have accidentally deleted what was needed to boot from the hard drive. He said he never got any disk when he bought it at Best Buy several years ago. There is only one option now to boot, and that is the CD. I could get the CD from HP, I think, but I also wondered if this is an opportunity to install another OS, like one of the "independents". I've always wanted to try, as my engineer brother has done, but haven't been brave enough to try it on my own desktop. I'd like to hear what the experts on this forum have to suggest...
Thanks.

Sorry...forgot to add that computer is running Windows Vista Home Premium.

Welcome.  If the Recovery Partition is still present and you have not made the Recovery disk set before, then you can make it now - assuming the PC still runs.  OR  you can use the Recovery Partition to return the PC to "factory fresh".  Since this is WinXP, once you do that, there will be a ton of updates to run. Before going to that extreme step, what problems are happening and what have you tried to fix any of these?
