Power extension cable issue

Q: Power extension cable issue

Am I posting in wrong forum? I'll try not to make new threads but I've
been searching for a while now, it's hard to browse the pages and I'm
in hurry because my comp might die any second!! Do you know any
Swedish forum similar to techspot? Well, I'm Swedish

I still have a AGP system and the day before yesterday the comp didn't start
because it said I haven't connected the Power extension cable!!! I tried over
and over again but it was the same. I opened the comp and reconnected all
cables even if all seemed alright. The comp worked another day...

Yesterday evening it happened again. This time in Windows XP. The screen
started to flicker and a warning message said some ATI driver was missing.
But it was because of the Power extension cable again. I reconnected all
the cables but the comp still claimed about the Power extension cable
over and over again. I gaved up and went to bed. Hopeless.

In the morning (today) I unplugged all extra stuff like sensors and leeds for the
case and I replaced the cables so there was no other stuff on the same cable.
Well... then the comp didn't start because the CPU was unworkable!!! "check
CPU soft menu"... Ok, but I saw nothing wrong in there and PC health looked
good. But the CPU was still unworkable. Back to the CPU soft menu I saw
nothing wrong except I knew that I changed it for many months ago because
I didn't want it to be overclocked. It was set to 204 MHz 3060 GHz before and
I changed to 200 MHz 3000 GHz. This time I changed back to 204 MHz 3060
GHz. And the comp worked again! That was weird. And now I'm sitting here
trying to make a technical post in english... LOL

The issue is quite unexpected even it have happend once a long time ago.
Now I'm afraid that my comp will get broken anytime, maybe next time I
restart it. Please tell if you've had similar problem. What do you think is
broken? The power supply, the mobo or the AGP card?

I have no technical data about my computer available but
there's a list at the bottom of the page in my Xfire profile

Ok I WILL upgrade soon but then I need a functional comp so I can
order some new stuff. And of course it's in the end of the week

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: Power extension cable issue

might be the monitor

No replies :/
Ok... Actually I've had no problem since I changed the settings in BIOS
and it's very weird. I've still bought a new power supplie, a Hiper 580W.
I'll install it later I hope it's good ...and quiet enough. The first step in
the upgrade process :dead:

Why I couldn't start my comp and why it said the power extension
cable wasn't connected... Here's what I think, even I'm not a pro.
Sometimes I switched off my old Nokia monitor while the comp was
working a long time during defrag, virus scan and more, because I
thought it will decrease the lifetime and because the screensaver
didn't always work as it should. I think something happend to the
BIOS because the monitor wasn't on...

i have a 15m usb extension cable and i need to run more than one device from it.

At the moment i can only run one thing, a mouse.

I also have a usb hub, from tescos and i was going to use it to connect multiple devices to the one usb cable/port.

I tried doing this but it although the light on the port came on none of the devices plugged in worked or showed and lights or signs at at all?? but the hub works fine when plugged into the computer with no extension.

i tried plugging in a keyboard in individually too, instead of the the mouse and it didn't work, so at the moment i can only run a mouse from that port??

I think it maybe to do with the lack of power from the one port but i am not sure. On the 4 port hub i have it does have a 5v power socket too(to allow more powerful device to run off it) but i don't have a power cable for it.

Will getting the power cable help me?

Anyone else had this problem?

I want a longer cable for my PC's power supply but I'm not sure what kind of extension I should purchase in order to do so. I would rather just purchase the same kind of cable that came with my PSU (only longer of course) oppose to using a extension cord. Can anyone offer any advice as to what kind of cord I could use?
Thanks.

A:Extension Cable for Power Supply

Believe standard on most PSU are about 5-6' . I would not use an extension cord. Of course plug into a surge protector, try get a quality one, not cheap one.

I have bought from this company before, have many sizes in feet, good quality. can't be beat in prices. Power Cords w/ 3 Conductor PC Power Connector - Monoprice.com Google around, many other sellers on internet, never beat there prices though.

18AWG should be fine, but can go for thicker if you like 16AWG

I've got a computer that's turned off. I press the power switch, and nothing happens. Now, I unplug the network cable and the computer turns on.

Why does having a network cable connected prevent the computer's power switch from functioning? And why does unplugging the network cable cause it to power up?

The computer has worked fine for a year, but was recently moved to the other side of the room, and a new switch replaced the old network hub at the same time.

Right. I am trying to build my first computer (yay me), and I ran into some problems. So far, all the parts that I have, I have gotten for free, so I wanted to continue that trend for the hard drive. I had an old laptop that I am no longer using, so I decided to try using its hard drive for my new computer. I have an adapter for 2.5-3.5 inch IDE drives, but the power cable that is attached to said adapter has only the red and black wires (2 out of the 4 connectors have wires). are the other ones (yellow) necessary, or can they be skipped?

Also, would there be any particular way that I would need to arrange the jumpers on my laptop hard drive, and how would I go about doing so.

thanks for your replies in advance

Phlip671

New comp specs:
-Asus Tusi-M motherboard (given to me by a friend's dad). the mobo already had a celeron processor and heatsink attached.--350-Watt PSU
-Being short on cash, I decided that I would use the motherboard's built-in video chipset for the time being (upgrade in future)
-512 mb RAM
-30GB laptop hard drive
-integrated sound card

(as a side note, anyone got any suggestions on a cheap graphics card? Not anything top of the line, think 50-60 bucks.

A:Hard drive power cable issue

A 2.5 inch drive only uses the red and black as they run on 5v this means they can be plugged into the USB and ran from the 5v on the USB bus, the yellow wires carry the 12v needed for 3.5 inch drives.

However 2.5 inch drives very rarely have jumpers on them (some do and they are tiny little things) this means the PC would only see it as Master, so bear that in mind when adding any other drives especially those that require the master to be set to have a slave or else it wont work properly.

A few days ago I saw a computer in a Popular Mechanics that was build into a desk. This computer's GPU was connected with a pci-e extension cable. Now, I don't see such cables in the shops here. So, does such a cable really exist? And if they do exist, how effective are they?

There are extenders for all kinds of things out there... I've never used one, never needed to. When you're building a PC into desks or anything else, it's always a good idea to plan for airflow, cooling, etc.

Ok, I have a USB extension cable-- but, irony ahoy, it's too short. Can I cut in half and then splice it to make it longer-- and will just any old wire work for this?

And if so, I have another question- if I have two USB A to B cables can i cut them both and half and combine the parts to make a USB A to A cable? Like if I wanted to put both ends of into seperate USB ports?

I'm not quite sure that this is in the right section, but here goes anyway:

SO, quite simply is: Does the quality of the USB extension cable affect the performance of the device you're using it with?

For example, if I am using a Wi-Fi dongle, and using a USB extension cable to position it in a higher gain area, would using a 50p cable from eBay yield the same performance as say a more expensive/ higher grade Gold plated one?

I need to extend my usb cable and I can get 15 foot extension cables.
What will happen when I plug my usb device that has its own 5 foot cable into the 15 foot cable?
Will it fail? USB is limited to 5 meters?

I have 3 usb devices. GPS, Keyboard, Mouse to plug in. Each would have its own usb extension 15 foot cable.

If that wont work, what about using a powered hub?

A:usb 2.0 extension cable length

A very quick google search came up with this statement:

If you are using a regular cable (max length of 5 meters for 2.0 and max length of 3 meters for 3.0/3.1) with an active cable, then the maximum length for USB 2.0 is 25 meters(about 82 feet) and the maximum recommended length for USB 3.0/3.1 is 15 meters (about 49 feet).

Hi, guys! I am not sure what to buy!

I have a Dell 19" monitor. I dunno what kind it is. Flat screen.
But I just bought an ASUS VH238 23-inch.
Now, I want to do the dual-monitor thing, but I want the 23-inch to have a nice long cord... 6 or 8 feet.
Let me know if I'm out of my mind.
I also need the splitter.

Can anyone provide (no Ebay please) links to appropriate cables--both splitter and extender?
Or am I just being a big baby?
I don't want to buy crap, but don't want to spend a lot either.
Help!
And thanks!

A:Split Monitor Cable & Extension

Do you want to see the same thing on both monitors or two separate things? A splitter will only show you the same thing on both screens, including the same resolution. If you want to see two different things on each monitor then you will need a video card that has two outputs.

A 6 or 8 ft cable isn't much of a problem. But the cable type may depend on what video card or integrated graphics you have and what outputs are present, many(most actually) new systems support dual outputs, just check the back of the PC or post the specs/info on your computer.

Hello to everyone

As i'm new to this forum, as welcome note i have problem to present.

Before few months i bought 2 USB extension cables for my mouse and keyboard.
They are about meter and half long, and in that time i did not have any problems with them, until last night.
In one moment i unplugged keyboard from USB extension cable and after that after i plugged it again, the keyboard did not work, not any kind of message or sound after you plug in something to usb port. So i tried plugging in mouse in same extension cable and mouse worked, but after switching keyboard to another ext.cable it did not work again.
Only way for keyboard to work is to plug it in directly to PC.
I tried uninstalling USB drivers so let windows install them automatically, but same nothing happen, only mouse is working ... :S its weird, don't know what to do as booth extension cables are obviously working. Tested with mouse. Keyboard is working as i said before i tested it plugging in directly. Never seen this kind of problem.

Help appreciated

When you unplugged the usb cable (key board), was the PC powered on? Sometimes doing so can cause such issues as you are experiencing. Generally a reboot will set things wright.

What does it look like in the device manager, are there any yellow triangles?

Have you tried using different usb ports with the extension cable?

Hello,

I have a small indoor TV antenna that works very well, and I want to find out if I can set it up in my attic and run the signal to more than one location with a splitter. The coaxial cable that comes out of the antenna is much thinner than standard RG6 (about 1/8" dia.), and I'm not sure if I can attach that thin cable to a splitter and then run RG6 cables out of the splitter.

Do you know what that thin coax is called, and whether it would be better to stick with that kind of cable throughout the cable runs?

Thank you!

I've just bought a Freecom 500GB Toughdrive. It is brand new and I have not yet transfered any data on to it.

I'm running Windows 7 64bit on an Abit AN8 Ultra mainboard.

When I plug in the tough drive using the integrated usb cable (on my USB 1.1 or my USB 2.0 interfaces) the device seems to function normally and I can mount and access the drive. Neat.

However, if I then use the male > female extension cable, the light on drive comes on but the drive will not mount. I know that your thinking - this would suggest a faulty cable. Unfortunately not, since my 2 other usb extension cables which I know work, do not work with this drive. In addition, I have tested the drive and its extension cable on an XP SP3 laptop and it does work. I also tried the drive with cable on my win7 64 laptop and it worked - tho earlier it did not work. Power issue? I dont think so since its not a USB hub - its a straight male > female extension cable.

Please provide some explanation, as I am stumped. I can use the device, but it's a pain in the neck that I cant use an extension cable since my USB 2.0 ports are at the back of my computer and very difficult to access.

Thanks.

Is it possible to use a USB-C extension cable with the DA200 Adapter? I haven't got much room on my desk so I'd like to move this to behind my monitors. I've tried with the one USB-C extension cable already and this hasn't worked so I was wondering whether I need a particular type?

A:Dell DA200 - Extension cable?

You'd need a USB-C cable that supported at least USB 3.1 Gen 1 traffic, maybe even 3.1 Gen 2.  I would get the latter just to be safe, although that will limit your maximum cable length. Some USB-C extension cables only support USB 2.0 because they're primarily intended to be used for charging and maybe some data transfer where bandwidth isn't as much of a priority, but such cables will not only slow down the USB and Ethernet connections on the DA200 (if they worked at all), but they would also lack the necessary wires to carry display traffic, which uses the USB 3.1 wires.  For gory details on the vast variations of USB-C and Thunderbolt cables, check out my post here: en.community.dell.com/.../20017817

I've got (several) excellent computer cases, and a tight-fit on a PC system desk setup.

(Typical) problem is: most all the PC "connections" to it are on the "back" & on the expansion slot panel.?! (all jacks & connectors are Ind. standard)

As you've probably figured out from my long Title above - I don't know what these extension arrays are actually called. I have seen them, (usually threaded inside the PC case from the back or Mobo, to the front).

Not knowing the 'correct'omundo name for these things has made googling for'um a lot harder. What i'd like is to 'extend' the connections for (at least) all my Graphics card Audio in/out jacks - and rear USB connections up to the front of the machine (where they should be on all machines in the first place)!

Actually. Other than things like the NIC card and A/C, I'd just as soon move "all" the "user access" connectors up front, to the top, the side, where ever they would be actually "accessable" .

I'm just tired of having to stand on my head - with a flash light in hand - tangled in wires that i'm not looking for - i'm sure lots of you have been there .

Any ideas where I can find these things, (or a correct NAME for um)? I'll buy them individually (if i have to), or a 'harness' with all the extended connections on it would be Ok with me.

The design of the Dell TB15's cable is really poor. The cable is hardwired on the docking station on the left side of the unit, which is same side the thunderbolt port is on the XPS15 9550. This gives you very little options on where to put the dock, since the cable is so short.
Has anyone found an TB3 extension cable that their using?
I'd really like to move the docking station away from where I keep my laptop. If I could find a 10' cable for the docking station, that would be perfect.
However, I'm not finding much in the way of female/male cables. I'm pretty sure I'd need an TB "active" cable.
Has anyone seen an extension cable that would work?

A:Extension cable for Dell TB15 docking station?

I asked this same question some time ago. It turns out that the TB15 cable is replaceable and the process is shown in the doc for it. Which would certainly indicate that they plan on having other lengths available at some point as the inside connector looks like some custom connector. That said, technically there is apparently a limitation on the cable length, I believe it is less than 3 feet. I have not found any ThunderBolt 3 extension cables.

Now suddenly I wake up one morning to find the message "USB Device not recognized." This only happens when I have the wireless adapter plugged into the two cables. I have tried plugging it into each of the different cables seperately, and it wont work on either cable, as well as working off the end of both cables. When I just plug it in straight into the computer it works fine. Any other USB device I plug into these cables works fine, weather it be a webcam etc. Just the combo of my Wireless adapter and my extension cables doesn't work. What do I do? But yeah if I have to buy something so be it, I'm just not sure whats wrong in this case. I've tried the most obvious means of solving the problem, simply restarting the computer, unplugging the device and plugging it back in etc. I've tried reinstalling the drivers on both the cables and the device, nothing seems to work. I don't understand it at all.

When I look in device manager, the monitor is listed as a generic plug/play device. Do I need to manually install a driver from teh manufacturer? Previously, when just plugging the monitor directly to the machine with no cable the display looked fine, but now it doesn't look as good.

thanks,
bp

You'd be better of with a long high quality cable then using an extension.

Yes, install the drivers from the manufactures website. These will help your GPU set the correct resolution.

Recently I had to test my cable modem by directly plugging the output cable of the modem to a computer. The problem is that I have 3 computers: One desktop and two laptops. All three computers are running Windows 7, 64 bit and service pack 1. The three computer models are: (1) Dell Vostro, (2) Levovo Ideacentre and (3) Sony Vaio. All computers are less than a year old. When I cpnnect the cable modem RJ45 cable to the Vostro the browser works great. However, when I connect the same cable into either the Ideacentre or the Vaio the browser does not see the signal. Therefore a signal is coming out of the modem (as demonstrated by the Vostro) but I can't figure out why the other two computers don't see the signal? I checked the computer configurations in the command mode but that did not help much. Any ideas?

I'm having a bizarre issue where simply unplugging the official Lenovo power supply from the orange USB power port causes the laptop to immediately issue the subject warning, along with the detail "A USB device has malfunctioned and exceeded the power limits of its hub port".   This warning pops up every 5 seconds, unless clicked on, where reset/close options do nothing.  Crazy thing is, NOTHING is plugged into any USB port!   Reattaching the power supply does not clear the error.  Only rebooting with the power supply cable connected clears the error.   Remove the power cable, and the error instantly comes back.   All of the USB ports actually work fine, including the USB C port, whether or not this message is active. Maybe it is a hardware issue, but ALL the USB ports actually work fine.  I can't figure how unpluging the power source can trigger a USB power surge when nothing is actually connected and the battery is fully charged.  I've removed/reinstalled the USB Root hub, eXtensible Host Controller, Generic USB Hub, etc., drivers multiple times to no avail.   No errors with any devices are apparent in the device manager. I've seen a lot of issues reported about USB power surges but none like mine.   Anyone have any ideas about this?  System: Lenovo Yoga 900/16GB/Windows 10

hi all,

I'm in a bind, and a friend referred me to this site, where I might be able to find some decent answers.

I run a small computer store in my hometown, and I was fixing a Sony Vaio PCG-FRV35 Notebook, It's fairly old, p4 with 512mb ram... But anyway, I was just removing spyware and viruses from it, and finished that up, then he said his sound wouldnt play, i started by reinstalling drivers and all that good stuff but it didnt play, I decided to lookinto the notebook to see if the speaker wires were connected and everything was fine there...

I pried off the faceplate for the powerbutton and LEDs and everything thats just above the keyboard, and I saw a ribbon cable connecting the power button and speaker circuit board to the motherboard, so i carefully unhooked it and put it aside, after finding no problems I rehooked it back up and tried to turn on the computer again... no power no post no sound nothing. It's like the power button is shot now. I've troubleshooted for 3 hours already on it, tried a multimeter to check to circuit connections, tried _everything_

I have no idea what to do now, this guy want's his laptop so he can work with it, and I dont feel like having to replace a laptop... this is like a techs worst nightmare >_<

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, is there any known issues were these power ribbons?

I have a ECS P4.945GCT-M/1333 (3.0) 775 mATX Motherboard and I installed Intel E2180 cpu and put memory stick on it. The computer won't boot - the cpu fan moved a second when I plugged in the power, and the stopped. If I disconnect the auxillary power cable, the CPU fan just can start, but of course it won't post. If I also disconnect the cpu fan, the power supply fan starts and I can see keyboard lights turned on for a second.

I measured the power on auxillary cable and it is ok: 2 12v and 2 GND. I am pretty sure that the power supply is good: I put on another power supply there and it is the same thing.

I previously mentioned a problem with not being able to save gif animations. After lots of surfing I found the problem and it's an extension issue. According to ms.com the way to resolve it is to just type in the extension manually. Does anyone else know of a possible solution other than the one ms mentions. I work with lots of senior citizens and they get confused when they have to type in the extension, they're not always certain the difference between gif and bmp; I'm trying to see if there's a solution that would involve me changing settings somehow so that the items are automatically saved and then also automatically opened when they go to view them or use them again. Everything was fine but now that sp2 has been added this problem has popped up on more than one system, any suggestions please?

A:extension issue

Recently I have been having the same problem. Not sure why and not sure how to change it. I used to be able to download pictures in any format. Now it only allows me to download in BMP format. Doesn't matter if I am using Explorer or Firefox. Sorry I am of no help, but maybe somebody else here will know the answer for both of us.

Hi, I have an Acer V3-772G which I have had from new (Semi New from Amazon, warehouse cosmetic damage), Have never experienced any issues with powering on/off/charging until recently. Here is where I am up to; Laptop will power up from the battery.Laptop will not power up with cable alone (Battery removed). When powered up with the batter inserted ? the laptop will (according to the battery monitor on the laptop) charge the battery, however, the battery continues to discharge and the laptop will eventually run out of charge. When the power cable is inserted whilst the laptop is powered up, the laptop recognises that the cable is connected and will enable the "Plugged in" power settings etc. If I then remove the battery, the laptop powers off.Laptop seemingly charges the battery when it is powered off, however, even after a full night plugged in the battery doesn?t have the charge to start the laptop. Both the external cable and the battery are in perfect working order (Having tested both with a separate Acer laptop).I have opened and cleaned all connectors / fan / CPU / GPU inside the laptop and nothing looks out of place. All USB / Optical Drive / HDMI ports ETC all work without issues. I?m assuming a cable issue and not a main board issue because there are no other faults besides the DC cable (Battery will still power the laptop etc.). I have ordered a replacement 120w internal DC cable from the spare parts website to test my theory. In the meanti... Read more

A:4 pin atx12v power cable causes power short

1. Welcome to Tech Support Guy
2. The usual cause of such an event is either
A. a defective motherboard - unlikely but could be
B. If this is a new build - a build error and the motherboard is shorting across a ground fault when that power is connected
C. You are using the wrong connector or connecting it on the incorrect orientation - eg the clip is not the correct way on the motherboard header
D. CPU error - bent pin on insertion of CPU

3. Please post some more detail of
is it new build
CPU details
What checks have you made if new build
Re 865A01 - which one please there are variants

4. I presume now having looked at the board it is NOT a new build, so when please did this first occur
and what problems were seen first, if any , before this
Most likely cause now, as I think the system is of some age is the board or the processor, if you refer to the 12v aux power

ATX 12V Power Connector: CN11
The 4 pin ATX 12V power supply connects to CN11 and provides power to the CPU.

After shutting down, my computer will not power-on again unless I unplug the power-cord, then plug it back in (or use the psu on/off switch).

I have tried changing PSU, same thing happens.

My guess it has to be related to my motherboard.
I have the latest bios. I have reset the bios.
This happened after upgrading to a opteron 180 cpu. But I'm not sure if its related.
I have tried disconnecting the RAM, harddrive, graphics card to no avail. Also tried refitting the power-button cables.
Computer is rock stable once its on ...It powers on fine if I switch off the PSU with the button that is located on the psu, or pull out the power-cable before turning it on.

Any ideas what might be causing this?
Epox 9npa+ultra motherboard, amd opteron 180 (939), win xp sp3, 2gb ram

A:computer will not power-on unless I unplug power cable first

Unplugging the power supply, or disconnecting from the source allows everything to reset in the power supply and on the motherboard. This situation is most always associated with a defective power supply.

Since you have changed the power supply and the condition persists then the problem almost has to be a fault in the motherboard POWER GOOD circuitry.

If it were my machine I would just get in the habit of turning off the power supply after use, and live with it. Unless the problem is something obvious such as a "bulging" or leaking capacitor, chasing a problem like this is like chasing ghosts.

You need to go into 'device manager' (which is a part of your Windows program). Click 'start menu': choose 'Help and Support' icon. Type 'device manager' in the 'search box'..print out the instructions. If you are new to troubleshooting your computer: print all instructions. It will save you a lot of time and mistakes. Look at the device manager screen, click on 'monitor', then 'properties'. Next do the same on 'display adapters' This will tell what's not 'operating properly' and whether it's the driver's. 'Help & Support' has much help to offer...but not all the answers by a long shot. Good Luck.

Hi all, hope ive posted this in the right place,

This is an issue that suddenly occured on my Mothers desktop computer that runs Windows 7, she turned it on this morning to find that all her documents, pictures etc wouldnt open, so ive had a look to find that the filenames have an extension on the end reading ".howto" so for example "01.jpg.howto". Ive tried to remove the extension in properties but it says it may corrupt the file and obviously she doesnt want to lose them, i did remove it on one picture and it still wouldnt open. Also tried removing ".howto" in regedit which had no effect.

Just wondering if anyone has seen this before as Google doesnt bring anything up regarding a ".howto" extension and if theres a way to sort it without losing files. When I hover the mouse over the files it says date modified 30/01/18 3.18pm but my Mother is adamant nothing has been downloaded etc and that she was using the computer after that time without issues unless something has caused it on shut down/start up?

Done a scan using malwarebytes and AVG and nothing found. Also cant do a system restore as the furthest back restore point is after the date modified, which I thought was strange. Is there a way to get older dates to show up other than what is listed?

Appreciate any help with this,

Stuey
