Windows Explorer - Control Panel and Computer windows empty on opening

Q: Windows Explorer - Control Panel and Computer windows empty on opening

Hi everyone! I am having a problem with Windows Explorer that upon opening the Computer window or the Control Panel, the screen is blank with 4 icons (Favorites, Libraries, Homegroup, and Computer) in the left pane.

Windows gave me a notice about MS SkyDrive was causing a problem, but uninstalling it was of no help. Any suggestions?

PS: Maybe I should remove DreamScene?
UPDATE: DreamScene removed with no change.

I recommend trying the free service from Zip Cloud. It's currently our users' favorite backup and storage solution and will save you headaches down the line.

You can get it direct from this link http://goo.gl/rFYDxc. (This link will open the Zip Cloud homepage.)

Note the green in the Address bar at the top. Wait for it to complete (goes all the way to the right) then you should see content in the right window.

This happens to me some times as well but I have no idea why.

I'm attempting to fix my brother's computer, which is running Windows Vista Home Premium x64. Recently, he's started getting this error message, "Windows explorer has stopped working." It keeps popping up every few seconds, no matter what he's doing, and explorer continually restarts. He tried running system restore and that didn't help. I found that if I start the computer in safe mode, there is no issue. I found this article on microsoft's website regarding this error and followed all of the recommended steps: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2694911. I logged into another user account to test it and didn't receive the error. When I gave my brother back the computer, he logged into his user account and started getting the error again. He created a new user account, but still got the same error when he used that one. I googled the issue and found that one solution might be to uninstall certain programs. So I opened the control panel to try to view the installed programs, only to find it completely blank with the message, "this folder is empty." I have not been able to find a fix for this problem in any of my google searches. I'm not sure if the two issues are related, or if it's just a coincidence. I would really appreciate any suggestions. Thanks!

Does he use Internet Explorer? If so, have him use Gear > Manage Add-ons, and disable all add-ons. IE and Windows Explorer are linked and misbehaving add-ons/plugins can affect Windows Explorer. Try it and see if it helps.

Hey guys, this is my first post. Sorry if this should be in another spot... I've been looking everywhere and I haven't found anyone with this exact problem. So, I had this annoying little malware that kept changing my default search engine. No big deal. Removed all traces of it, fixed that. Well, it entered something in the registry, so I open CCleaner to get rid of it, and I "Fixed" ALL of the errors it found. I don't know if it's a coincidence, but since then, when I open Windows Explorer, all my shortcuts (Favorites, all the links under Libraries like My Music, etc.) in the program disappear, and it only shows "Favorites, Libraries, and Homegroup." No sub-links. When I restart my computer, it goes back to normal, but when I go to certain folders (Happens quite often, not sure which one(s) specifically) it makes the links disappear. It also seems to happen when I click on My Computer from the Start Menu. When this happens, Control Panel is blank, and the "My Computer" folder will not load anything. I have to search for specific folders. I've restarted the services/processes in task manager, replaced the explorer.exe file and shell32.dll, ran "scannow" in cmd, scanned for malware/viruses countless times with multiple programs, gone to the registry editor thing in Windows and made sure everything is pointing in the right direction.... still the same result. Running out of ideas before I just re-install... your help is DEARLY appreciated... Read more

If it was my computer I would do a clean install following the procedure outlined in this tutorial:
Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7

When you have finished with the clean install, then make it a habit of creating system images, so when things happen like what you are now experiencing you have a fall back option to restore you computer to the way it was. This will save you the time and effort of reinstalling your programs. I personally use Macrium Reflect and it does a good job.

This PC has been fantastic since I got it last year. never any problems. The past few days though Explorer has been acting up. When I open This PC it's empty, eventually the icons appear but then I still have to wait a long time for the percentage bar and the green loading thing across the address bar basically stays on forever. When I open Control Panel sometimes it's empty too. Several times I have gotten stuck on the Start screen. I can't click anything, though I can alt+tab and see the other programs but when I let go it goes right back to the Start screen. Last time I just left it on the screen and went to bed, when I woke up it was unstuck but still had the other issues. oh and when I boot it takes a long time, like an hour or more for my Startup programs to load and show their icons in the system tray. After a long time they suddenly all show up at once.

I have tried running Windows Update and updated everything and of course rebooting. I ran Windows Defender and AdAwre. Tried defragging too as well as clearing some room on my C: drive since it was nearly full via CCleaner and uninstalling.

Any other things I could try? This is Win 8.1.

Hi guys,
I'm running Vista Home OS and had many problems recently booting. Almost every time it requires to run system restore before it boots. Now several desktop icons are not working - mainly the ones that allow me into the file system. Runnig "My Computer" opens "Computer Management Snapin Launcher". Running "Windows Explorer" or "Control Panel" gives an error message "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Set Associations Control Panel". I'm pretty sure this must be a virus messing up my registry but I've run AVG, AVAST and Spybot and nothing is being found. Any ideas how to fix any of this without reformatting???

A:control panel windows not opening fully

Welcome to TSG!

I'm guessing you mean that after going into Printers and Faxes, you right click your printer, and then click Properties?

Give this a try:
Right click the Desktop, click Properties
Click the Settings tab
Click the Advanced Button
On the General tab, change the DPI setting:, if it's Normal, change to Large, if Large, change to Normal.
If it's Custom setting..., click the down arrow then click Custom setting... and note the settings, then change to Normal
Click OK until you are back to the Desktop
Repeat the process to restore your original DPI setting:

Now check Printer Properties again.

Thanks to this post by Moper for the above.

Seriously. What?

I click Control Panel. The window then opens and closes really fast! I opened/closed other folders and programs w/o this problem. It's just the CP. Restarting doesn't help.

I haven't downloaded anything suspicious lately either. This PC was just built like less than a month ago and the install was a fresh one.

Thanks for any help.

Edit: btw the same thing happens when I search for control panel in the windows menu startup thing (... what is it called?) and click the link that shows up.

A:Control Panel windows closes milliseconds after opening it...

You could have a malware problem. I sugest running a complete virus, spyware/adware scan and download HighjackThis and post your log in the security section for someone to analyize. If you need a good spy/adware program I suggest Windows Defender. It is pre installed on Vista you may have to turn it on. It will let you know when you click on it in the start menu. I hope this helps you. Please let us know how you are making out with this.

Hi everyone,

First off I'm a new user, so apologies if I do anything wrong. I've done a few searches but can't quite find what I need.

I'm trying to sort out my sister's computer for her, which has gone a bit wrong.

Computer: Acer Aspire 5338

Symptoms: Internet explorer not working (does not open, although computer thinks about it slightly before hand)
Control panel does not load (non of the icons load, and it does not respond, has to be shut down by task manager)
Same problem with the Network and Internet box
Supposedly Safari works, but I can't get it to now.

Could it be a virus? Or a complete windows failure?

Quick help would be much appreciated!

Hello to all:
This problem just started a few days ago on my Windows 7 Professional 32bit system.

When I open a Windows Explorer window and some Control Panel windows all is good. Problem is that when I try to close the window by pressing the top right window close button or if I right click on the taskbar instance of the window and choose to close it, the program does not close but instead is minimized to the notification area with the formation of a new folder icon. This icon is a standard windows yellow folder. If I expand the notifications area and hover over that folder, a balloon window lets me know that there are 'x windows' where x represents the number of windows that have been minimized (instead of closing as I originally wanted).

Furthermore, a right click on that folder in the notification area brings up a context menu including the names of the windows (that I can click on and maximize back onto the screen). At the bottom of the context menu are the options to 'Restore all' and 'Close all'.

Not sure why this came about. Thanks in advance for your help.

A friend of mine is having issues with his computer. He asked me to take a look at it and here is what I have found:

Windows explorer does not open. I tried using the windows button and "e", the windows explorer shortcut and using task manager to start the task. None have worked. What the computer does is blank wallpaper for a second, the desktop icons start to appear and then nothing.

He has the same problem with Internet Explorer and Control Panel.

I can go into safe mode and get into all three, no problem.

My guess is that someone has hacked in and made a few registry edits.

Does anyone here have a quick fix or some utility to fix this.

I can do a system restore because it is XP. But I would rather use that option last. I can run HackThis! but not until tomorrow.

Thanks for any help.

For some time now whenever I click on control panel, it seems to open ok, but then when I select something windows explorer has a problem and has to restart. Then when I go back to control panel it works ok.

I've read about the normal solution to this problem is locating corrupt .cpl files in the windows/system32 directory.

Maybe I'm doing something wrong because when I double click on them all they all seem to work - so does this mean none of them are corrupt?

Any suggestions?

Initially, I have an issue that suddenly I cannot open Windows Explorer and Control Panel and I am able to fix it by my self as in my post here (Can't open Windows Explorer/Control Panel for domain user).
Where the issue only appear if I login as Domain user.

But then, after I restart my laptop and login again as domain user, it happened again.
And only if I login as domain user.
Just curious that it is related with windows update or other update from other programs.

I search for this issue and I found that after updating new IE-9 it will have this issue.
Is it correct?
If 'Yes', how to fix it? Because I am not sure that I can use System Restore for my laptop.
And why it happen only for domain user and not with local user (local admin or normal user) ?
Thanks in advance.

Welcome to TSG

Hmmm, do you have an anti-virus program at all??

You definitely have signs of infection.

Download and run these:

Ad-Aware SE: http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/

Install the program. On the bottom right corner of Ad-Aware you will see an option called "Check for updates now", click on that and choose "connect". Download the updates. Next click on "Scan now" on the left side of Ad-Aware. Make sure that "Search for negligible risk entries" is crossed out and not ticked. Choose "Perform full system scan" and click "Next". After Ad-Aware scans your computer, Ad-Aware may find some bad files on your computer so make sure you tick them all and choose "Next". It will ask if you want to remove those items so just continue. After removing the items close Ad-Aware.

Restart your computer

SpyBot: http://majorgeeks.com/download2471.html

Install and run Spybot S&D. Choose "Search for updates". Next choose "Download updates". After that, choose "Search and Destroy" and click on "Check for problems". If Spybot finds any nasties on your computer, make sure that they are ticked and choose "Fix selected problems".

Restart again

Move Hijack This out of the Temp folder. Have it in a permanent folder of your creation on the hard drive.

Then post a new log

OK don't chastise me I know I shouldn't have done it, but I ran Combofix and now I can't open my computer or programs fold etc. it says no such interface supported. Everything else works fine like I was able to use Firefox to open this topic. I should also add that even though it won't let me double click and open folders on my desktop it will allow me to left click and open them. The funny part is the bug I was trying to get rid of with Combofix is still there lol.

I have a problem with XP.. I cant access control panel or windows explorer. No error messages, it just wont load. Internet Explorer still works though. I runned Trends online scan and found some trojans I deleted. Also tried adaware and Spybot, but didnt find anything other then some cookies.HijackThis found som matrixhere.exe, fgdufo.exe and a regsvr32 /u /s image.dll.. I did a search about those on the net and I fixed checked them in HijackThis hoping that would solve the problem. Still have the same problem though..

So my question is, can I fix windows or shall I just format c: and reinstall?

I need help. About a week ago Windows 10 started working in an abnormal manner on my PC: I wasn't able to open File Explorer or Control Panel, whether from the start menu or from basically any application that calls for those (file explorer or control panel).

I tried running command prompt (admin) sfc /scannow, DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth commands several times but that doesn't fix the problem at all. As a last resort I downloaded a brand new Windows 10 ISO file from the Microsoft site and performed a clean installation formatting my HDD. Things were OK the first minutes, but then the problem starts again with the each new installation of Windows. I don't know what is causing File Explorer and control panel to crash, maybe its a faulty driver or windows update itself. I have installed Windows 10 from that ISO file several times and every time after a few minutes of me doing nothing with the computer, it fails again.

The first driver I update to be able to use my monitor is the nVidia driver (361.43).

A:Windows 10 can't open File Explorer or Control Panel

Hi, do you have any such crashes in Safe Mode? Please try- you would not be using the Nvidia driver then.
(You could access Safe Mode via SHIFT + restart and work through the rather confusing set of menus to Safe Mode).

The clean installation would seem to eliminate 3rd party programs as it sounds as if you hadn't time to install any.
Can you find any useful reports in the Event Log? (See event viewer).

If you complete your system specs, someone might be able to offer advice on your hardware.
System Specs - Fill in at Ten Forums - Windows 10 Forums

Another completely different line would be a hardware fault, of course, as you say the problem developed suddenly with your PC, and persists after a clean install.

I recently downloaded and subsequently removed two programs from the website www.myipodownloads.com. Now my computer shuts down and restarts when it used to just hibernate. Also, I cannot access my control panel on the computer now. I'm using Vista and I have Norton Antivirus on my computer. I'm worried that there is some kind of virus or spyware interfering with my use of the computer and possibly attacking it. Please help.

I like the youtube video. It shows us exactly what you were doing and what happened.

You can access Event Viewer from Start > Run and type eventvwr.msc so you don't have to access it from Control Panel. Look for red errors in System and Application that occured at the same time as your problem. The event logs may contain useful information about the cause.

Hello rajarsi and welcome to TSF,

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad since you will not have any of browsers open while you are fixing this.. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. Again, you should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that 'Display the contents of system folders' is checked.

The Temp folders should be cleaned out periodically as installation programs and hijack programs leave a lot of junk there. Download CleanUp! (Alternate Link if main link doesn't work) and install it. Do not run it yet.

Download CWShredder at http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/CWShredder.exe and run it. Click on 'I Agree' button if you agree with it. Click on 'Fix' (it will automatically fix anything it finds for you) and OK. If it asks if you want to delete a certain random file, choose No and post that filename here. Let it finish the scan and then hit Next and Exit.

Click here to download ETRemover. Unzip it, but don't run it yet.

Reboot your system in Safe Mode (By repeatedly tapping the F8 key until the menu appears).

Run ETRemover.exe now. When it's done, follow the prompts, but don't restart yet. Do the ... Read more

Hi all,
I am having major problem with my new Vista based laptop.

Whilst setting it up I seem to have been infected with spyware/adware/malware and whislt it is now clean thanks to a combination of Norton, Registry Mechanic and Spyware Doctor when I try to use control panel or windows explorer it opens momentarily and then closes automatically without being able to see any icons etc

I have tried system restore but this won't work on any restore point as it comes across and unexpected error.

I am at a loss what to do, the Compaq laptop came with Vista preloaded so I cant reload, I am worried as because my laptop was working ok after transferring all my files from my old laptop I havent had chance to make a backup and the files on my old laptop have been deleted to re build that for my son.

Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated.

This issue started last night.
1. I cannot open Windows Explorer.
By clicking explorer in desktop or icon in taskbar. It just shown in taskbar for few seconds and gone. Nothing happen.
2. I also cannot open Control Panel except for Windows Defender and Device Manager.

I have tried to:
- Right click explorer icon and run as administrator, but still no help.
- Run 'explorer.exe' directly from C:\Windows folder, but still no help.
- Run 'SFC /SCANNONW' as administrator from command prompt, result "not find any violations", but still no help.
- Scan using Windows Defender, no issue found, but still no help.
- Run/scan with ShellExView, it all shows 'normal' programs (no UN-recognize software/program).

But if I:
- Restart in Safe Mode, it work fine.
- Login as Local User with admin privilege / Local Admin, it work fine.
Need suggestion and help how to solve this.

Thanks in advance.

- OS: Win7 Enterprise 32 bit.
- Security: Win Defender (no other Antivirus).

A:Can't open Windows Explorer/Control Panel for domain user

Finally I 'fix' it by following other solution in this forum.
Because this issue only happen for domain user and not for local user, so I remove/delete the profile for domain user. And login again with the same domain user, to create new profile, and yohoo it fix the issue.

Here is what I've done:
1. Login as local admin (because as local user have no issue).
2. Open C:\Users folder.
3. Open for User folder that have issue (e.g.: c:\user\emir.yhy)
4. Make backup for all the files/folder inside it to other drive (flash-drive or whatever).
5. Delete/remove User folder (C:\Users\[user folder]).
6. Open 'Regedit'.
7. Go to "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList".
8. On the left pane, make sure it shows something like 'S-1-5-...'
9. On the right pane, check for 'ProfileImagePath' make sure it shown the user name that has problem. (see the attached file).
10. On the left pane, right click the folder and Export it for backup (just in case).
11. On the left pane, right click the folder and 'Delete' it.
12. Switch User (start - switch user).
13. Login as Domain User which have issue (it will create new profile).
14. Try to open 'Windows Explorer'. Tha thaaa... it fixed.

Next step is restore all files that we copy for backup.
BUT do not copy the files. Especially the shortcut. We need to re-create it again.
If not, you will find same issue again.

That's it. That's what I've done to fix my issue.
Hope it help for other who have same issue.

Hello everybody,
I'm actually using Windows Server 2003 (for personal use only), but I think the concept should be the same with Windows XP. As a good security practice, I only log in with my normal user account and carry out the installation routines with the command "run as" (right click on an .exe file). But when I have to config a particular option in windows, most of them are in control panel, there is no such "run as" option k , and the only thinng I can do is logging of which is pretty disturbing (windows server 2003 doesn't support fast user switching, does it ??? If it does please give me a hint )

Even when I try to do it with the command line : "runas /user:Administrator control", after correctly entered the passoword it showed me "Attempting to start control as user .." and went back to the command prompt without any error message
I also tried to create a shortcut of the control panel and used the right click run as thing, entered the password and also not thing happened. The same with Windows Explorer

Can anybody help me out
Thanks so much in advance
