DVD drive powered off, won't turn on

Q: DVD drive powered off, won't turn on

I'm baffled that for some reason, on my T530, my DVD drive D: shows as "Powered Off." I can right-click the drive and it shows me a 'Power On' option, but clicking it does nothing. If I hover my mouse over drive D, it says: 'drive is powered off, to power on the optical drive, press the eject button on the optical drive.' That also does nothing. Also, my 'battery stretch' is off, so it does not appear to be a power setting. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Greetings. Earlier today I turned on my laptop and it worked fine. I went to hook it up to a LCD projector, and it shut down totally. We have not been able to get it going again since.  Please advise on how to resolve this issue. We have done all the steps found online regarding removing the battery, holding down the power button, all that. Nothing is working. The charge indication light is coming on where the adpater plugs in, but nothing is registering to the computer. Please please advise. Thank you!

A:HP G62-367DX Laptop suddenly powered off and won't turn on!

Hello @Tiffany58, Welcome, and thank you for posting on the HP Forums! I have read your post and understand that your HP G62-367DX is not powering on. This could be related to either a hardware or BIOS issue. Did the notebook shut down the second you plugged it into the projector?what color is the light on the notebook where the AC adapter plugs in?Is there any light on the Caps lock or Num lock keys?Does the power button light turn on at all? I know you have done it before, but please perform another hard reset. Once that is complete, try following these power-up failure documents: HP Notebook PCs - Using and Testing the AC Power AdapterHP Notebook PCs - Computer Does Not Start (Windows 10) I look forward to the results.

My laptop HDD recently would not load windows. So i installed the OS on a different drive. Now, when i connect the old drive VIA USB 2.0toSATA it will not show up in My Computer. Disk Management will not show the drive either. The HDD is getting power, i can hear the disk spinning.

A:Hard Drive is powered, but does not show up.

Plug in and turn on the external USB hard drive
Right mouse click on My Computer
Left click on Manage
Left click on Device Manager
Expand the USB list
Find the USB device for your USB Hard Drive (the one that has no description)
Right mouse click - Uninstall
Turn off the external USB hard drive
Turn on the external USB hard drive and let it find and install the driver

Open 'Administration Tools', select 'Computer Management', click on 'Disk Management' and see if it can be seen here. If it does show here, chances are it doesn't have a drive letter assigned. If this is the case, right click on the drive, select "Change drive Letter...', and assign a drive letter to it.

If it was not seen there, go to 'Action' on the menu bar, click on 'Rescan Disks' and it should come up. If necessary assign a drive letter to as described above.

Possible hardware/firmware design problem.  Two identical laptops purchased 2 years apart.  Both work great with headphones or built in speakers.  Neither will work with powered speakers.  Tried 3 different powered speaker systems, including a high end model.  All had the same problem on both laptops.  Drops one channel and/or goes mono.  Sound quality is POOR.  Realtek only shows one output device HP/Speakers.  Config options don't show any option for external speakers.  Since headphones work fine, assuming it is having problems when it senses a powered speaker system. Has anyone else seen this?

Hey, I'm using a Lenovo T430s (Windows 10) . Recently, my DVD RW Drive showed it's powered off, and it wouldn't turn on saying that a specified module of Power Manager wasn't found (see the pic 1). Moreover, the battery icon has dissappeared from the toolbar on the right bottom. Any particular solutions for this?I tried downloading the Desktop Power Manager for this from https://support.lenovo.com/in/en/downloads/ds003852. The installation fails saying there's an older version already downloaded (see pic 2). I'm not able to find the older version also to uninstall it

Another issue with the laptop: the Passport drive is not recognized in the USB 3.0 connector on this laptop, but it is on the 2.0 connector. The USB cable I am using is the one that came with it, it has the blue part and sticker that says 3.0.

I was able to put this drive onto the laptop in the 3.0 connector yesterday but not anymore. I tried disable and re-enable the USB Controller but that didn't work.

When I plug it into the 3.0 connector, it actually does get power to the drive - the light comes on and I can hear it spin, its just that Windows 10 won't see it.

I have a Sabrent 2.5" hard drive enclosure SBT-EKU25 that I am trying to use with USB on a Windows 7 laptop. The drive works but stops doing anything for several minutes at a time. There are no error messages, it just stops... no flashing or steady light. A minute or two later it picks up where it left off as though nothing has happened. It will then run fine again for several seconds and then it goes back to "sleep". I am trying to use the drive to backup files and it spends more time sleeping than doing anything else.

The drive enclosure does not come with any drivers and is supposed to be plug and play. I have checked the USB drivers and Windows says they are up to date. I have installed a 60Gb hard drive from an old laptop in it.

If i plug the the drive into the USB port on my Windows XP desktop it works fine.

I have a Compaq desktop with an
AMD Athlon 1.1GHZ
128MB of RAM
a 16mb TNT video card
and 60GB HDD

I tried to reformat the hard drive because I initially had a virus on it - so the only means was to format it. The first time I reinstalled it successfully with a copy of a WinXP Pro cd, that came with a dell laptop of mine. BIG MISTAKE-- the computer tripped out and was asking for authentication. No problme arised yet, windows xp installed, and authentication was the only thing that was being irritating.

I commensed to reformat the hard drive with nothing in it except the OS installed, with a different copy of WinXP that did not come with my dell laptop. In the middle of reformatting, however, about 51% complete, I powered down the computer because I thought it would not hurt the formatting process, so I could take it back to the owner's house and finish up the reformatting process there, and at the same time be able to hang out at their pool. the old idea of "kill two birds with one stone" or something. >_< I feel pretty stupid. I hope you guys don't chew me out now, but yeah.

So I tried to turn the computer on again later on to finish reformatting. I pressed the power button and everything seemed to go right, until nothing appeared on the monitor. the monitor stays black, with an orange 'standby' light as if the computer was on standby.

A:Satellite T110 - USB powered CD/DVD drive not recognized in BIOS

I don?t have the notebook in front of me but check the BIOS if you can find an option called ?USB legacy support?. If yes you have to enable this feature that your notebook can recognize the external drive.

Can you boot from an USB stick? I mean you can also create the recovery files on an USB stick so this would be also an option to restore factory settings.

Hi there

Intuitively one might think using Powered (from the mains) external USB HDD's would require more power from the computer as well compared with those small self powered units.

I've no way to measure this but I'm sure the small units might consume MORE power as the computer has to supply all the power for Disk rotation and the USB I/O controller.

I only ask this because I need to put two large powered USB units (both with 2 X 3 TB Raid 0 HDD's in each unit) on to a USB 3 Hub.
The two HDD units seem to perform perfectly well whether connected to the chargeable port on an HP laptop or the "non chargeable" ones.

The RAID 0 is powered by the HDD itself (internal Hardware RAID) --used RAID 0 for speed -- don't need to mirror etc - I've enough backup if the whole thing goes bonkers. !!

The files on these HDD's are serving music and video so not intensive used -- don't seem to have any problem streaming media from the laptop.

Any engineers out there - curious over what is the actual load (power wise) on the computer if a POWERED USB HDD is used compared to a Self powered one. Note the Hub I'm using is not also powered.

However although there is power going to the drive, it is not recognised on boot nor in Windows 10 x64.
There are no drivers missing in Device Manager. The SSD/HDD are all recognised and working using USB to SATA adapters.

Can any one help please?

I have a satellite receiver with a usb port that I can record my shows onto a flash. I also have a usb cable that can connect from the usb port on my receiver to the usb port on my pc. Is there a way to somehow trick my receiver into thinking my pc is a flash drive? That way I can record straight to my pc instead of my tiny 1 gig flash.

A:Can I turn my pc into a flash drive?

Can you provide more details about the device you have including brand, model, etc.? In general, USB ports of two computers can not be linked up to transfer data from one to the other. I am guessing that the receiver has a basic computer built into its base which uses the USB port to communicate with the flash drive inserted there. If so, I don't think you can get it to communicate with a PC using that port. However, you may be able to buy a cheap high capacity hard drive (1 TB hard drives are less than a couple of hundred bucks nowadays) and use that instead of a flash drive.

Upgraded & re built my PC from 7 32bit to 7 64bit with new, Mobo, CPU, Ram, & Intel 520 SSD C drive.
I kept the old HDD's in the case attached via sata, but now when working only on the new SSD something is accessing each of the old HDD's in turn every second. When I first started up the new configuration at first the old drives were silent ie no read/write activity, but now they are on continuously although I never access them. I would like them to spin down to stop when not needed. Indexing is only active for the C drive, also I have Iolo System Mechanic Pro installed c/w it's Anti V & Anti Malware. Win 7 32bit is still installed on one of the old HD's in a dual boot type senario, from the Bios screen.
I've got Process Hacker 2, & Process monitor loaded and looked at the results but failed to identify the process accessing the 3 HDD's every second.
Anyone got any good ideas, as to where I go next?

A:New SSD C drive but what is accessing 3 old HDD's in turn every second

1stly, it is most likely that boot manager and other hidden files have been installed to one of the mechanical drives which in turn is making them spin up occasionally (this happened because you had the other drives attached while you installed windows on to C:\)
2ndly System Mechanic Pro will spin up the drives and IMO does more harm than good, i suggest you ditch such software that claim to be all singing and all dancing...9/10 they don't do anything good

the above said though i have a similar issue because i left in the other drives (i don't care much to do anything about it until i need a full clean install still going strong for over a year now) though i was given the solution but never acted upon i suggest you await a more experienced member in this department to come to you aid

Why has this happened? All drives fail. It is only a question of when your drive will fail. This is why we stress backups so much.

Next download and run the drive maker's utility for checking the drive. You download this from whomever made the disk; ie WD, Seagate, etc. Post back with the results of your diagnostic.

I have a HP Personal Media Drive which didn't seem to be working, both when I put it in to the media drive slot in the tower of the PC and also when I connected the USB and power cables in to the enclosure externally.

Thinking it was a problem with the actual enclosure I purchased another external hard drive enclosure from CIT. I've been searching around for a way to turn off my external e-SATA drive, instead of having to shut down my computer every time.

In my search I read in another forum one member who suggested, "With my Win7 installation, I went to the JMicron site and downloaded the appropriate driver installer package, executed it, and it found the controller and installed the drivers. The eSATA controller now shows up on Device Manager (as a JMicron JMB36X Controller under "Storage Controllers") and performs hotswap properly, automatically recognizing any eSATA disks that are plugged in or removed."

Well, I installed the JMicron file just like he said and now I see it in Device Manager, but I'm still no closer to figuring out how to shut down my external e-SATA drive. I'm curious how this controller performs hot-swap? I haven't been able to figure it out.

I also took the advice of someone else on another forum and used Disk Management to turn my external drive into a Dynamic Drive. I'm not sure if this was a good idea or not, because now the drive runs all the time and is very warm to the touch. Before I did this the drive didn't run constantly. Now I have no idea how to undo it. Unfortunately, this didn't enable me to make it unpluggable, either.

So my question is, how do I enable this external drive to appear in the taskbar so I can shut it down? I thought the JMicron thing would do it, but so far I haven't been able to figur... Read more

Hi my optical drive has an on off switch.

If I try to switch it off I get this message:

If I right click in the systems tray - safely remove hardware - there is an option to eject the "standard dual channel PCI IDE controller"

If I do eject that, will it mean that when I re-boot the optical drive will no longer be recognized by windows? THought id ask before trying it.

I purchased an external SimpleTech SimpleDrive (250 MB) to use for imaging my hard drive. At the present time, this is all I'm going to be using it for. After imaging my drive, I will remove all the cables from it and put it in our safe--just in case we ever have to restore the image. Every day or so, I'll hook it back up and run a differential image. Then every month or so I can run another full image.

My question is, does it matter whether you keep your external drive on when you are not using it, or is it better to shut it off? I notice that it gets a little warm to the touch as it sits there. I also feel a vibration, which I am assuming is some kind of internal fan to keep it cool?

Things to try.
SYSTEM must have full permissions on the folder in question.
Add the path to the indexed locations.
Try rebuilding the index.

One of these may do the trick.

I thought I would try this forum as a last resort in trying to fix my external hard drive. I have all of my music, movies and college papers (5 years worth) on it and for some reason it won't turn on. My unit is a Maxtor:

It was working fine until the other day when I tried to turn it on and nothing happens. When I plug in the powersupply I get the green light, but when I turn on the unit nothing happens. When I turn off the unit (even though it doesn't turn on) I notice that the littel green light on the powersuplly flickers. I'm thinking it could be something with the powersupply, but I thought I'd check for anyone else's thoughts?

Maxtor customer support is the worst.. so i'm hoping someone here can help.

How is it powered? There is not much internally as far as a "power supply" goes. That is external.

If you have a light, it has power. Has anything happened to it lately?

How old is it? Still warrantied?

Win7 is sending me a lot of warning messages that tell me my new Samsung drive (HD103SJ) is about to fail. I checked the drive with DickCheckup and it didn't report any problems. That utility records data every 10 minutes. I assume that Win7 is getting something from the SMART output and flagging it, but my guess is that the drive is okay as indicated by DiskCheckup. However, XP pro was still on my old hard drive but my computer worked fine until 3 days ago. The green motherboard light was on and when i pressed the power button the fan would spin. The computer would not turn on though. I then waited for a few hours and tried again, to my suprise it turned on perfectly.

Now, 3 days later, the motherboard light is still on, but the fan will not even spin when I press the power button! What do you think is preventing my computer from turning on?
Thanks alot.

I could swear the tech told me to turn off my external hard drive ONLY while computer is ON, but it doesn't make sense to me...should it be off or on when I shut down my computer...

A:External Hard Drive-turn off while computer on or off?!

You want to make sure nothing is access the drive or writing to it
You should have an icon in the system tray - lower righthand side to eject (stop) the drive
I have done Both depending on what I wanted to do next - if I want to continue to use the laptop - i would make sure nothing is communicating with the drive and switch the drive off and unplug or if i finish for the day I just shutdown and then switch the harddrive off.

ok I was trying to format a hard drive from older computer, and had numours problems so I decied to use the hard drive as a slave on another computer and format it that way, BUT i followed the pin instructions to make it a slave, and on my other computer it didnt have instructions for the pins to be master, slave, ect. So I figured it was correct. I went to use the slave drive on the computer plug everything up and started up and got a blue screen of death, so i figured it was due to the slave drive so I unplugged it and used just my main hard drive and now the computer just gets the blue screen of death everytime I start, but can start in safe mode. So how do I fix this?

What does the error message say?You could try running System Restore.Start> All Programs> Accessories> System Tools> System Restore. When this opens make sure that "Restore my computer to an earlier time" is chosen, and click on Next>.The dates appearing in bold are the dates that you can restore to, click on the date that you want and then click Next> to start the System Restore. This may take a long time to complete, and when it is done it will restart your computer. When the computer restarts and you have logged on as the administrator a Restoration Complete page will appear, click on OK to complete the process.

It will not turn on keeps saying diagnosing pc repairing pc then restart and never comes back on tried unplugging and holding down for 15 seconds

A:My hard drive won't turn on says diagnosing pc repairing pc ...

@Hannablings,It is difficult to assess your problem unless you state the following:1) Exact model number or product number.2) Original OS that was installed at time of purchase.3) Was it in this restart loop again and again?   That is normal for an OS repair.

About a week ago, my external hard drive just stopped turning on after I turned it off.. The power supply light (on the power supply box) changes from flickering to stable when the switch on the hard drive is switched on/off. The hard drive itself doesn't turn on at all (the light never comes on).

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated
