Security updates/maintain security for Windows 7?

Q: Security updates/maintain security for Windows 7?

I read that Microsoft quit updating Windows 7 last year, which explains why there have been no updates on my PC for over a year. I would like to continue receiving security updates somehow. How can I keep my Windows 7 PC secure? I have Avast and Malwarebytes, but I have not been running scans every day. Is it still OK for me to use sites that save credit card numbers, like Amazon?

Thank you!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

There was an Office vulnerability that was fixed with the April patch Tuesday in an Office update, but we've had trouble making sure all users have the updated Office patch as N-Central(our patch management tool) doesn't always list what build/patch Office
is currently running accurately.

We do know all our PCs have the April/May security updates. Is the Office Update combined into the big monthly one?

Hi,
Get-MsrcSecurityUpdate does not seem to list some "security only" updates in the xml output.
It does list all the other updates including Monthly rollups. Is there a way to retrieve this?
For example, the following updates are missing from the output when the command
Get-MsrcSecurityUpdate -Year 2017 was executed:

4015548, 4014985,   4014986,   4014987 and 4014988.

Hi.
Thank you for all your support and security updates for my two Surface RTs.
They?re great and I don?t want to see them go.  A quick aside? It would be nice for my two Surface RTs and me, if Microsoft had a change of heart and decided to port Windows 10 RT with Office RT for Surface RT and get a few
more years support.  Anyway.
Today one of my Surface RT 8.1 provided the option on shut down, to update and restart, which I did.
It said it was installing 4 updates.  When rebooted, I went to view update history and found two failed updates and three successful ones for a total of five.
The first one in the list that failed is this one here below.

Then to get more information, I clicked the link shown there for 4048958 to learn more.
That took me to the Microsoft Security Update Guide, where I searched for 4048958 and was provide two links for RT 8.1.
Both links, one for IE11 and one for RT 8.1, go to the KB 4048958 article, which says to get more information, go to the Security Update Guide, which of course takes one back to the KB.
Not very informative loop I guess.
The second update that is on the list above showing as failed, is the one for Adobe to prevent remote code execution.
When I am in Windows Update and double-click the failed entry for Adobe, and then click the link for more information, it takes me to a URL that does not show a KB number and provides a link for more i... Read more

This is an inconvenient delay, not anything serious. Running Windows 7, if it makes a difference.

Issue: Microsoft Security Essentials auto-updates block Microsoft Updates until MSE is finished.

Description: I have Microsoft Update (or Windows Update, whichever it's known as in 7) set to automatically check for updates but not download or install without my approval. I do this so I can review what's being updated, (I'm a little wary of Microsoft putting an anti-piracy app in as a "critical" update in the last year or two). Anyways, when I boot up the computer, it checks for updates and alerts me of them.

However, Microsoft Security Essentials also auto-checks for updates upon boot, and if it has an update it will automatically being downloading and installing it in the background. Which is all well and good, except whenever that's happening it causes MU to "fail" updates until it's done updating. Thus, I have to remember to wait until the MSE update is done, then run the MU update.

Question: MSE definition updates are included under "Optional" updates in MU, is there a way to make MSE stop updating independent of MU so I can queue all the updates together? I feel like this would be the easiest way to prevent this annoyance. I don't see an option, and I'd rather put up with this annoyance if the only solution is to put all updates back into Microsoft's hands completely.

A:Microsoft Security Essentials updates blocking other windows updates

My understanding of MSE is it will check several times during the to make it has the latest updates. Most GOOD VA programs will do this as there are several releases daily for AV definitions. This is the only way you and your machine will be aware of these releases.

When some of these attacks happen, a definition is released, but as the infection is refined, the the definition must also be refined and/or improved. I use F-Prot on my machines, but I install MSE on the kids and grand kids machines. I have seen as many as 12 releases in one day from F-Prot, this is what is call" being on top of things".

So I would not want to rely on ME being the one to check several times daily on all of my machines to see if a new release has been made.

I am currently trying to get my boyfriends computer working properly again. A couple of weeks ago it stopped receiving security updates. Nothing had been downloaded (actively) around that time until he tried to fix a problem with random and irrelevant pop ups. I have removed WinDefender 2009 as well as elements found of Total Security 2009 (TS-2009). Windows updates, Norton updates, and Ad-Aware updates are all being blocked. (Error = No connection to download server.) Also the installation of other security type software such as SpySweeper and SpyBot are being blocked. I managed to trick the computer into allowing the Microsoft web scan by typing the URL for the alternate verification method as many of the Microsoft pages relating to security downloads and interaction are blocked. This tool found upwards of 40 items and at least 3 issues. Unfortunately once the scan was finished the computer was frozen and I was unable to see the details of the report. I also went into the services to make sure the Automatic Updates are set to Automatic. Every time I do this it changes back to Disabled once it click Apply and the option to start the service does not become available. I believe there is something hiding in the system causing this but I'm having trouble finding it so I can get it out.

The OS is Windows XP and I am comfortable working in the registry as long as I know what items I need to delete or what changes (specifically) need to be made. I am not comfortable with the... Read more

because of mistakes I had made. The strange thing is I have a refurbished HP6005 Pro Quad AMD-Phe-2-x4 B95, with windows 7 pro 64 bit, and it has no problems with the updates, but I prefer the ASUS pc, not just
because it starts much quicker, everything runs quicker in it.

Hello -

I just went to the Windows update page and was told I couldn't access the update because I didn't have administration rights. It suggested I go to my Control Panel, User Accounts and have a look see. It had only two listings: My name under which "computer administrator" was written and Guest which was turned off.

I'm guessing, but this might be happening from when I logged on in the safe mode yesterday and logged on under my name. I was given two options: administrator and my name. Was I suppose to log in as the administrator? Is that why I can't access Windows Updates?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Read a Brink thread on IE9 and a question percolated.

Internet Explorer is part of Windows 7 and can't be uninstalled, merely "turned off". I don't use IE and I have it turned off at the earliest possibility.

A few years back, when I used ATI/AMD's control panel's links, IE would run to access the hyperlinks, instead of the default browser. Very disturbing! I have not encountered that scenario since then. Relief!

I did a return-to-factory install in March and according to the update history, Windows Update has not pushed a Security Update for Internet Explorer onto my system.

Is my system relatively secure in regards to the unpatched Internet Explorer that is integral to Windows 7?

A:Windows 7 + IE Security Updates

Hello Gigggles,

I would recommend completely updating IE to 9, with all patches, and simply setting another browser as your default. The truth is that windows itself often will use IE, refusing to use all other browsers. This won't hurt anything, it is just how it is set up. No reason to disable IE completely, even from a security standpoint.

The security factor would come into play with the browser you run most of your websites from. Make sure that browser is completely updated at all times, and all important or critical windows updates are installed.

So my suggestion would be, once again, to update everything, and just use the browser you are most comfortable with.

Can someone point me to resources that talk about how to manage Windows security updates for X number of hosts on a local network?

To be specific, I manage a 30 node private network (XP pro sp3)at my place of business. I have all "autoupdates" turned off on all machines so as not to use up bandwidth in the event a large service pack is made available and all nodes do an update at the same time.

I want to find out if there is a way to manage updates by either downloading the updates to one server and pointing the Desktops to that server, or managing when each individual machine will perform an update from one location.

A:Windows Security Updates

<<...so as not to use up bandwidth in the event a large service pack is made available and all nodes do an update at the same time.>>

Since SPs are rather infrequent...and well-publicized before release...I don't know if I would adopt that line of thought. XP has had 3 in 8 years of availability to the public.

Hope this helps, and have a great day.

Apple published security updates and bulletins for six products such as Xcode 9, tvOS 11, watchOS 4, Safari 11, iOS 11, and iTunes 12.7 (for both macOS and Windows).

The security updates were published to address several low-level security issues. The most important of all the security patches is the one delivered with the recently launched iOS 11. For an overview of all the new (non-security related) features in iOS 11, you can read this review from MacRumors.

There are no macOS security updates. Apple will release macOS High Sierra (10.13) on September 25, and the company is expected to bundle any security patches with the main 10.13 release.Click to expand...

I use Microsoft's automatic updates and it recently dowloaded 6 updates but for some reason they won't install. It runs through them one by one but then just says...failed! after each attempt. Here are the updates that won't install:

Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 SP1 on Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows Server 2008 x86 (KB2416447)
Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 Update for Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP x86 (KB982168)

Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 and .NET Framework 2.0 SP2 Update for Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP x86 (KB982524)
Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 and .NET Framework 3.5 Family Update for .NET versions 2.0 through 3.5 (KB951847) x86

Does anyone have any ideas? Is this a problem? Is there a way to fix it. I appreciate any help

Thanks

A:Windows XP security updates won't install

I had the same problem about a month ago. It was suggested that I should uninstall and reinstall all versions of .NET Framework using Add/Remove Programs and the .NET Framework cleanup utility. I uninstalled .NET Framework 3.5 and I decided not to reinstall it as I suspected I might not need it. I have had no problems and no more updates. When I tried to uninstall .NET Framework 2.0, it would not do so because I need the program. So you may need some versions of the program and may not need others depending on whether you have an app that needs it. .NET Framework is a very confusing product.

Windows 98 and ME are legacy Operating Systems which are being maintained on extended support by Microsoft Security. Security releases for 98 and ME will generally lag behind the security updates made for XP and 2000 which are under current support. Several critical updates for calendar year 2005 are now available through the Windows Update process for 98 and ME. In updating one of our home PCs, six critical updates were successfully applied and everything continues to work well so far.Windows 98 and ME security updates released on March 10, 2005http://www.techweb.com/wire/security/159400240Windows Update Link for 98 and ME http://www.microsoft.com/windowsupdate

Going to try this post again, no replies to first post about 5 days ago.

Problem: All Updates are failing for Windows 7 for x64-based systems. Updates were released on Jan 8th.
Ran Malware Bytes - no items detected.

Machine reboots every night trying to install the updates and they fail every day.
Updates had no problem previously.
I am not sure what else to do or check.
This is one of the updates:
Microsoft Security Bulletin MS12-078 - Critical
The list of updates seem primarily like security updates.

I've attached a screen dump of the updates that failed

hello,

i've been having some problems with my computer as it suddenly became unbearably slow, so i thought it could be the copy of windows xp, as i've had problems with windows xp before. so i formatted the drive and installed a new copy of windows xp home edition. the problem started when i tried using windows update to download the available updates, some of the available updates downloaded and installed normally, but when i tried to download and install security and critical updates the computer turns off during the install of the first update, when i turn it on and try to update again it says all updates are downloaded and ready for install, and when i try installing again the computer turns off while installing the update, i tried removing the first update from the list, but the same happened again and again. and while typing this in the computer turned off and i did not even try to install any updates, i just got more confused.

please help, i'm going crazy..........
