Disc Drive issues (slow reading)

Q: Disc Drive issues (slow reading)

So I repaired my mom's laptop, and it works well. But now, it reads disc slowly. If I place one in, it'll usally take a bit slower than usual. And sometimes, it might not open up if it does that. But once it's done reading, then the disc works fine. Can someome tell me what the problem is? How can I fix it? Do I need to replace the disc drive? The drive is a hl dt st dvdram gt90n

Preferred Solution: Disc Drive issues (slow reading)

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello. I have a small problem. My DVD drive is not reading a DVD that I put my music backup on.
The drive reads burned cds and dvds with movies just fine. I burned the music dvd using Nero 6.

The odd thing is that I am using the same DVD rom that I had on another computer. It read that disc just fine. Now I have a refurbished computer and the drive shows no files when I put it in.
Any Ideas? Thank you in advance.

A:DVD Rom drive not reading burned disc

Did you try restarting your computer? Or cleaning your DVD for kicks? I mean that drive in your refurbished computer reads other DVDs and CDs just fine so it should read this DVD just fine. And you also said you were able to read the files off of this DVD on your other computer using the same drive.

What I think is going on here is some software issue. Make sure Windows is updated, so is the CD/DVD Rom drivers.

I was trying to install a game recently, and when the installation hit 49% the drive sounded like it quit running. A few seconds later I got an error message saying there was a problem copying one of the files to my hard drive and gave me the choices to abort, retry, or ignore. Retry did nothing and ignore skipped that particular file only to do it again. The installation was barely continuing and it gave me another message that the installation had failed.

If anyone has any idea what is going on and how I could fix it, please post back.

I've only had this laptop for maybe a month or so, and the damned drive is starting to give me problems with reading CDs.

I've some program called the Acoustic Silencer, that I'm making a blind assumption may be causing the problem. Either that or its time to take this pup in, but I don't feel like calling in on the warranty yet.

And I don't like the idea of a program that slows my cd speed to make it more "comfortable" to listen to music and watch dvds.

Anyone have any recommendations?

I am pretty computer illiterate so if you need more info let me know but my computer has stopped recognizing that there is a cd in the d drive. when i go through my comp and d drive properties under hardware there is something listed as HDS722540VLAT20 that appears to be selected as the drive in use. When I try to change it to the cd drive it won't stay selected. For the HD... drive it shows the location as 0/0, so I am wondering if somehow that got selected as the drive but there is no such thing on my computer? I tried deleting it but that didn't work. I wasn't having any kind of problem with this until a few days ago. I installed Dreamwaever and Fireworks a few weeks ago but tried uninstalling those and that didn't work either. Please help me. I am so frustrated!!!

A:D: drive issues- not reading any kind of cd

I used google to check on the long number that you quoted. It appears that this is a Dell brand marking for several different parts.
Right click on my computer, then click on manage, then go to device mgr, then go to dvd\cd rom and click on that. You will see one or 2 listings. Right click and "scan for hardware changes" and see if that works. Wouldnt hurt to reboot after that.
If that fails then turn pc off, open case and unhook the cdrom from the system, take off the ide cable and the power cable to the cdrom. Then boot up your pc and do as above, go to dev mgr and "scan for hardware changes" in the dvd\cdrom section, even though your cdrom is not hooked up do this anyway.
Turn your pc off and hook up the ide and power cables to your cdrom and boot up, go to dev mgr and see what it says now.
Also see if it works now.
About dreamweaver and fireworks. Even if you do an uninstall these and most other programs leave pieces of themselves around and can still cause problems. After running uninstall you need to go to program files and look for a folder for that program and delete it. Thats only the first step, you also have to go to the registry and use the "edit\find" feature to search for dreamweaver and fireworks entries that are still there. You should find many entries and delete them. But only delete an entry if it mentions dreamweaver or fireworks and make sure you back up your registry before you start. I went through my Tupperware Folder of pictures & saved the ones I wanted to a CD and deleted the rest that were in that particular folder.  Then I went to my computer to check the Hard Drive space & I have 3/4 of my hard drive free Free space: .52.4GB out of 71.0 GB

I have trouble to get speed on my P-ATA drive (Hitachi Deskstar 160GB, or Maxtor 300 GB) connected to my motherboard P-ATA IDE-channel. Asus support can not help me resolve this, so I rely on this forum now

Brief system spec:
Kingston 2x1GB memory DDR
SATA drive (for OS) Seagate Barracuda.
Win XP, SP3

The SATA drive works fine, fast and show up in BIOS setting.
The P-ATA DVD-RW Samsung also works fine, for both reading and writing. This is connected as Master.
The P-ATA HDD, slave, however is extremely slow, 1GB file transfer takes 15 minutes at least.
Their is no setting available in BIOS for the P-ATA devices, except for determining boot sequence.
It does not help to disconnect the SATA, or to change to master, or to re-format, or to change to my Maxtor disc.

BTW, I tried to do a clean installation of Windows7 on the P-ATA, which includes doing a format, but the drive was slow through the entire installation process and after 1hr copying files from the DVD, I gave up. So apparantly, even though no OS is installed, the drive is painfully slow.

Anyone who can help me to investigate this further and resolve?

Hi all,
Ive had this problem before and had to amend it with factory restore and im not doing it this time.....

The Hard Drive seems to be reading 'all over the place' when i start windows as it is slow and once Windows has started and Bit Defender has loaded up and my network connection the Hard-Drive light flashes intermittentley for about 60 seconds after its 'Ready-to-Go' the light stays on for half a second and off for half a second repeatedly for a minute and sometimes after Ive accessed the drive (used some programs)

Another thing that gives the game away is that when it is actually starting up then XP welcome sound breaks up as though the drive is trying to access other parts of itself whilst playing back the sound.... AND the mouse pointer keeps sticking, I have tried Checking drive with SpySweeper 5, ive erased all tracks with tracks eraser pro and used Diskeeper v10 to dafregment (even though it says that its ok) and when i did it took hours (it used to take 5 mins cos drive was always 'clean') I used the FAAST defrag on it also and it took hours and made no difference....

I tried system restore in XP but the 3 points I tried they all failed and i noticed when Diskeeper 10 was defragmenting most of the stuff it was moving seemed to be system restore items in the 'System Volume Information/_restore' folder.... [font=Fixedsys]Hello, I have come across a new issue(s) that I am unable to figure out. I am hoping there is someone here to assist. A few days ago I was working on my computer online and everything was good. The next day, approx. 20 hrs, I turned my machine back on. I got sidetracked and when I came back a half hour later, instead of my XP screen and the normal start-up programs, there was a blue screen and a check going on. It said something like "checking disk and cannot read disk" and there was a counted number on each line. These lines of check info were from top to bottom of screen and had corresponding numbers. I tried to exit with a couple key strokes and combinations. I decided to let it go and it went on for 4-5 hours, or until the next morning sometime. Numbers went up to like 5K or more. When I got up the next day, it had come to a few new lines of info reading "replacing invalid security ID/ default security ID for file #s/ security verification complete/ correcting errors in master file table MFT Mirror/ correcting errors in attribute definition table/ correcting errors in the uppercase files/ replacing bad clusters in ligfile" it had frozen seemingly at that. I decided to turn off using the power button and holding it down. Which I do not like to do, but I was stuck. Everytime after I turned it on, XP takes awhile to start up, when it starts to load it stoppes and goes to the F: drive needs to be checked and has an option to escape check. I... Read more

Dear Forum Members:

I received a DVD+R (RW) disc containing JPGs that I can view on a DVD player connected to a television. However, when I put the same disc into my computer's DVD player/burner, the drive merely spins and I cannot access the disc at all. I use the computer's DVD player/burner to burn data onto DVD+R discs all the time, so I doubt that the drive is incompatible with the DVD+R format. I also have no problems reading files from other DVD+R discs.

I also tried using ISOBuster, but that application does not recognize the disc in the drive either. Instead, ISOBlaster simply stops responding (presumably because it continues trying to read the disc).

I would either (i) like to read the DVD in my computer's DVD player/burner, or (ii) extract data files from the disc. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

When I was in college, I had a computer that ran ME. During my four years, my major required me to type ALL of my lecture notes and print them--to put in a folder to turn in. I have kept the disc and I would like to take all of my notes and put them on this computer. I put in the disc and it keeps prompting me to get the Adaptec UDF reader. When I click on the link to get said program, it runs and says that it is installed correctly. I then go to click on the disc icon to get my documents and I get the same message again. I've gone to Cnet and have downloaded a driver from there and have pretty much had the same reaction. It says it's finished loading (I even rebooted my computer) and when I click on the disc, I get the same thing. Do any of you people have a way to resolve this? I'd really love to get these notes on here and review/refresh.

I would just like to say hi to everyone with this being my first post.I'm having a problem with my computer not reading discs and can't seem to find a solution.Hopefully someone here can help me,I've tried to research the problem myself but got nowhere.

What happened was I was uploading a bunch of files from discs to save in my ''documents''. They were mostly wmw files coming off of DVD-R discs.I had only saved select files of each disc on my computer. After I saved the files to my computer and then tried to run several of the discs again later they will not read.

Some of the discs will play but some will not.For instance,I went to ''my computer'' with one of the discs that would not play in the drive and it says that there is still data on the disc.I thought maybe it got erased somehow but that's not the case.

Now when I was uploading some of the files I accidently had Windows Medai Player playing the disc while transferring files and the computer was making strange sounds.I quickly stopped the Player from running.Possibly I considered the disc drive went bad but it still plays select discs with files on them. When I put in the discs that don't read it sounds like the computer just keeps revving up.

Any help would be great. I'm pulling my hair out over here. Thanks

Packet writing is notoriously unreliable and should only be used for things you can afford to lose.

If you have access to Roxio Creator, it has a scandisk for RWs that sometimes will correct a faulty disk. Otherwise, if your files must be recovered, try IsoBuster from http://www.smart-projects.net/isobuster/ .

I went out to purchase an ACER Aspire 5551G laptop today (it was just so damned cheap), and all was going well, until I tried to install some programs.

The Rom was insanely loud, it was literally vibrating my whole desk. At first I thought it was the CD Tray being loose but it does not look like that is the case.

I am assuming the alternate possibility that it is just running too fast, so I would like to ask for solutions to this problem.

The optical drive I have currently is, Matshita DVD-ROM UK890AS.

Thank you in advance.

i jest replaced a dead dvd rom with a ASUS BW-12B1ST Blu-Ray Writer 12X BD-R 16X DVD+R SATA
and the bios see it, windows 7 see's it and installs the driver but every time i try to access the drive the explorer will go not responding and when i use task manager to shutdown the system hangs on logging off and will sit there forever.

what is odd is if i have a disk in and boot the computer it will see the disk and show and work perfectly with that disk until i remove the disk and insert a new disk (this only happens with audio c.d's, dvd's data disks works perfect and blue rays are untested.

A:blue ray disk drive reading disk issues with windows 7

What a coincidence -- I have exactly the same BlueRay drive as you. However, my motherboard has two sets of SATA connectors and I have the BlueRay connected to the one that is NOT set as AHCI. I found when I had it connected to one of the AHCI connectors, I could not boot using it and had problems using it otherwise.

I have got various discs burnt with Direct CD on the Iomega CD-RW drive that came as part of the package. I did not like either the hard- or soft-ware, so have been trying Nero 5.5. with the Lite-On drive that again is part of the package. To use Nero, I was obliged to uninstall DirectCD. I can confirm that the new package is much easier to use, and seems vastly more reliable.

What I want to know is, can I read the discs burnt with the DirectCD/Iomega package without re-installing Direct CD and perhaps re-connecting the Iomega drive ? When I try to read such discs now, I get the error-message 'Access failed'.

You need a UDF driver, it may or may not work but it's worth a try.

I'm running Windows XP Home Edition on a Hewlett Packard. I was trying to download a program from a CD but the computer for some reason won't acknowledge the disc in the drive. So I tried to copy and e-mail the program so I could download it from there. But whenever I try to save a file it tells me I don't have permission to save a file in that directory(any directory) and to see an administrator to gain permission. How do I fix this?

A:Reading disc and saving files

A previous problem I had with this computer, in case they may be related.
