Yoga 500 not charging

Q: Yoga 500 not charging

I have an Yoga 500 that idles charging, meaning that being working on AC power it will hold 15% but not charge further then that. Sometimes but not allways it will hung in between balance mode and power saving mode. The battery seams to be fine as attached test log. I have noticed that the internal power cable is somehow damaged and ordered a new one, but have been reading about faulty motherboards and wonder if this would be one of them as I just got the laptop and I don't know if the previous owner ever took it back to lenovo. I wonder if anyone had similar problems and if there is any way of sorting it out.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi. I recently bought a Lenovo Yoga 500 laptop, and I'm quite disappointed. When I plug in my charger, 9/10 times it starts to charge, then immediately stop charging, then charge again for a second. This results in never charging. Eventually it charges normally, but it's completely random and sometimes requires 5+ restarts. I need this laptop for school so taking it off for repair is hard for me but I will do it if there is no other way. I got a second charger from a friend and this still occurs, so the problem isn't with the charger. Anyone have any idea for a fix? Thanks

What does it mean when the charger indicator is solid white? What is the best way to maintain battery life?

A:Charging X1 Yoga gen 3

Solid white means fully charged or nearly so.  There is no "best" strategy.  It depends on how often and how long you use it when it is plugged in.  I use mine mostly on battery and I plug it in at night to charge.  I have it set in Vantage to start charging at 70% and stop at 98%.

Earlier today, my Yoga 3 Pro decided to stop charging.  When plugged in, the battery continues to drain as if it was not plugged in.  I have tested the A/C adapter by plugging in my phone with a micro USB and that worked fine, and the USB charging slot works when my wireless mouse is plugged into it, so I assume it must be the strange Y3P USB cable that is not working.   Would a normal USB to USB cable work for charging my laptop?  If not, how do I replace that "kink" USB cable?  I haven't seen any for sale anywhere and I'd rather not have to pay $40 for a whole new charger on the Lenovo site if the cable is the only issue.

A:Yoga 3 Pro Not Charging

Hello and welcome,

The Y3P and its charger need that special cable.  The charger and laptop have an extra set of pins in the USB sockets that pass 20V to charge the laptop.  A standard USB cable doesn't support those extra contacts.  The charger also provides 5V on the standart USB pins.

Your test of the charger with a your phone shows that the 5V portion of the charger is working but doesn't verify the 20V portion.  It's possible that the charger is bad.

When you plug the laptop and charger together does the battery icon indicate that AC power is attached?  You could have a bad charger, a bad cable, a bad laptop connector (or other component) or the battery management software could be messed up.

Sorry I don't have an easy test or fix.  It may be necessary to actually swap the cable and charger to diagnose this one.

[edit] The Y3P is a fairly new machine.  If this is under warranty, support should be able to help you:  1-877-4-Lenovo, 1-877-453-6686

Hello,I just bought the Yoga 730 and wanted to charge it, but I got the plugged in, not charging alert at about 20% battery. Upon reconnecting it started charging for a few seconds then stopped again. I doesnt seem to be losing power when plugged in and I tried letting it run out of power and then hoping for better results. Once the battery was empty and the laptop went out I plugged it in again and it went up to 33%, but now it stopped charging again. The laptop used to be a showcased model but was reset to factory settings and the battery is in almost perfect shape. Is there a way to fix this issue?

I was recently given a Yoga 910 which has barely been used and it seems that i cant charge it unless its off. When its powered on and plugged in it just says its on battery.  I preformed the following stuff: I thought it could be the charger but i tried my macbook pro 15inch USB c charger on it with the same results. Ive tried to reinstall the OS but that didnt work. I took off the back plate and removed the battery then held the power button for 30 seconds but that also didnt work. Has anyone had this issue and fixed it?Its such a nice laptop i would like to get some use out of it. I even tried to update the bios but the software says it has to be plugged in to do that.

Hello, The other day I plugged in my Lenovo 710 to charge before going to bed and when I went to use again yesterday it had not increased in battery life and remained at 57%. I figured it might have been a faulty outlet, so I changed outlets and continued to charge my laptop while I studied on it. After a couple of hours, I noticed the battery life still remained at 57% even though my laptop was plugged in. I went and hovered my cursor over the battery icon and it shows my laptop is plugged in but it says it is not charging. I'm a college student so my whole life is on my laptop and I use it all the time, and I need it for my finals this week. So I'd greatly appreciate any help on how to solve this issue!!!

We had to replace around 50 mainboards because the X1 Yoga 2nd Gen we purchased suddenly stopped charging (LED won't light up when plugging in AC adapter in any USB-C slot). Sometimes it will even start with the HDMI port not working and soon after people will call that they can't charge their Notebooks anymore. We tried everything, updating the firmware and drivers and then pressing the reset button. Nothing works. Has anybody else experienced this? It also seems that we're about to have the same problems with the X1 Yoga 3rd Gens. Has anybody experienced the same and is there a way to prevent this from happening? Kind regards,

6 months ago I bought a Lenovo Yoga 520 14IKBR, and now it won't charge any more while turned on. If we plug it in, the led goes white - and starts flickering orange after a few second, the computer seems to think that the power is not plugged in, and the battery doesn't charge. However, if we first switch off the computer, and then plug it in, it does charge normally. I guess therefore that there is no hardware problem, but a software issue.Somewhere on the internet we found a similar story, and according to them the solution would be a BIOS update. And indeed, the computer says there is a BIOS update waiting to be installed. However - because the computer thinks that the power is not plugged in, the BIOS update refuses to install - 'please plug in power'... So ... first question is of course if that BIOS update would indeed solve our problem. If not, is there another solution? If yes, how can we install that BIOS update safely while the computer thinks it is on battery power?

I have a Yoga 370 plugged into a ThinkPad USB-C Dock (DK1633) with the provided USB-C cable, and Windows is showing "Plugged in" but also "Not charging" as the battery has continued to decline in this configuration (it's declined from ~60% when it was first docked, and is now at 29%.) What's this mean, and how do I correct it? More detail: The USB-C cable is plugged into the port next to the power on the dock (the only place it fits.)The dock is powered, as evidenced by the power light being on.The USB-C cable is plugged into the Yoga at the "lightning" port (again, the only place it fits.)I've tried the most obvious googleable steps, which are to remove the "Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery" in Device Manager and re-add/update. This didn't change the behavior.I should add that I first noticed this problem only a couple weeks ago. Before that I believe the dock was charging the laptop as expected, in the same configuraton it's in now.I have not yet tried charging with the power cable that comes with the Yoga (instead of the dock/USB-C) since this problem started happening. I don't have the cable handy, and won't for a few days.

So I had my yoga 920 conk out on me at a VERY inopportune time, next month I go abroad to study. Yesterday I started my laptop and started some light browsing when it suddenly shut down. I tried starting it up again, when it came up with the dreaded blue screen saying 'failed to detect boot device' or something. Third boot try onwards, the laptop does not respond to charging, no lights come on, nothing, NADA. Worst part of it? This happened within 10 months of my purchase from USA. I have 54 days of my warranty remaining. I tried static discharges multiple times, no luck.Went to multiple service centers in Pune, India, but they refused to diagnose the issue saying that they do not service this model since it was not released in India. I'm ready to ship this laptop to the USA with my own expenses to have it fixed or replaced, but so far no customer service has been able to help me out.Any bright ideas/contacts?

I have a brand new Yoga 730 whose battery seems to have a serious problem. I can't get past 33% battery capacity and the system tray icon informs me that the unit is "plugged in, not charging." The 33% does not appear accurate, either, given that the unit goes dark as soon as I disconnect the power supply. I have uninstalled both of Device Manager's battery entries, allowing them to reinstall upon system restart, to no avail. It does not appear as if this battery is replaceable by mere mortals, so I don't think I am able to muck around with physical connections. All thoughts welcome...  Rick A.Pleasanton CA

Hi all. I've snooped around the first and second pages of google on how to fix my problem (see title), but I'm not technologically saavy and don't really understand what might happen to my computer. So anyways. The 'deets. I've been using my 920 for about 7 months now as a school computer, haven't had any major mishaps with it. I keep it clean both physically and virtually. Just 2 hours ago, my charger stopped working: the charging light is on, the usb-c cable works on other electronics, and the computer displays "Plugged In, Not Charging." I've tested with other cables on this computer and receive the same message. If anyone has some tips, and could explain how and why they work in layman terms that would be extremely helpful! Thanks!-A Noob

A:Yoga 920 here, Plugged in; not charging

What is the charge level?  If its like 96% for example it wont charge until it hits 95% to preserve the battery.  Also check Lenovo Vantage.  Do you have conservation mode turned on?  Those would be my first 2 things to check.

Hello everyone, My Y3P 1370 works like for a week plugged to charger and it charges but suddenly and out of nowhere, it stops charging the battery while windows still reports the charger is connected and charging. However it just doesn't. After a while the laptop dies on me and doesn't boot at all. The charger indicator is flashing red and the power button has the white led on state at the moment. I found a solution to my issue by removing the backplate and disconnecting the battery flex from the motherboard. Turning on pc without the battery. It boots fine. Turn it off and reconnect battery flex to motherboard, laptop starts charging and running properly. I have been having this issue for a very long time and i really need a permanent solution for it. Not weird.  The 720 needs 20V to charge.  If your adapter can't provide that or correctly negotiate that it's not surprising that it doesn't work.
