Driver Updating (Windows Update)

Q: Driver Updating (Windows Update)

Dell Dimension 4400
Intel Pentium 4, 1600 MHz
256 MB system RAM
NVIDIA GeForce2 MX/MX 400 w/TV Out
Driver Version
800x600 resolution, 32 bits/pixel
Windows XP Home v:5.1.2600 SP 1.0
Internet Explorer v:6.0 SP1.0

My question: is it "always" advisable to update to the latest NvIDIA Driver Version as found on my (non-critical) Windows Update?

Lately, whenever I check my Windows Update for critical updating I see five (5) WindowsXP updates I do not think I need (so, I do not install them) and also one (1) Driver Update. No version is indicated (would probably need to install to get this info?) but indicates it was released on July 28, 2003 and the size is 12.2MB.

In August 2003 I updated/installed NVIDIA Display Driver v4.4.0.3 and was wondering if I should download the version indicated on my Windows Update. All my displays seem to be working properly with no indication of any problem. Does the axiom "if it ain't broke, don't fix it!" apply here?

Thank you,

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I have Windows Update set up to automatically check for updates each day. Two days ago it found that "Realtek Semiconductor Corp. - Bluetooth Controller - CSR Bluetooth Chip" needed updating so I accepted this and it came back that it was install successfully.
Yesterday the same thing happened and again I accepted it and it was successfully installed. Guess what, today Windows Update still says "Realtek Semiconductor Corp. - Bluetooth Controller - CSR Bluetooth Chip" needs updating.
When I check in the Device Manager the driver is dated 24/6/2010 version so it has not been updated. If I click "Update Driver" it searches, downloads and installs an updated driver (so it says) but it has not, the date is still 24/6/2010.
Has anyone any suggestions why this is happening and how I can make the new driver install correctly.

A:[SOLVED] Windows Update keeps updating same driver. Why.

Hi and Welcome to TSF!

Hide the update in Windows Updates, then go to the manufacturer's website of your computer and download the driver from there.

When clicking "Search for update" in Device Manager, all it does is use Windows Update.

Here is the question
As you know windows update find most of (95%) of drivers itself.
Is it better to use office drivers or let the windows update to it itself ?

A:Updating Driver Via Windows Update OR Offical Drivers

I would run the windows update then check that driver date with what lenovo has on their site. If the site one is newer use that one if they are the same then you should be fine.

I went into my device manager to see which devices need to be updated. I then went and clicked update "Microsoft Virtual Wifi Miniport Adapter" - then as seen in the below photograph, a Windows error popped up and said "Windows can't verify this driver software". Can anyone tell me what is going on here? Could this be a zombie driver or is it safe to continue the update? Thanks.

A:Updating Driver: Windows cannot verify driver

Are you running any Virtualization software (Virtuabox, XP Mode)?

If so then that would explain the Virtual WIFI Adapter. Also, as you're running X64 then some drivers will produce this message as it's part of the X64 system to alert of any X86 drivers that may be installed.

I Updated to windows 10 when it came out as i was prompted to install windows  10. When using windows  8.1 i had no problems with amd drivers if i right click i can see the amd catalyst option but... when i UPDATED TO WINDOWS 10, whenever i right click i can only see intel graphics panel and no amd catlayst control. First I thought that i need to upgrade the driver when i went to device manager i can't see any thing specified amd in display drivers option and when i clicked option 'Show hidden drivers', nothing happens. I tried to install the driver from lenovo support website and the amd website, It  installed for me but it didn't ask for reboot and i manually rebooted but still nothing happened. I installed amd auto-detect utility it didn't detect the required driver. In control panel it shows amd catalyst in installed programmes but when i check in device manager or right click in desktop i don't see anything stated about amd. Amd worked perfectly in windows 8.1 and it detected my amd driver in windows 8.1. I tried all that was possible for me uninstalling and reinstalling but nothing happened. Please I am hopeless and i don't know what really went wrong after upgrading to windows 10 from windows 8.1. Please reply as quick as possible. Thanks in advance.

My computer was working perfectly, but thought Id be good and install the latest drivers, so I went to nvidia.com and downloaded the nforce drivers for my ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe motherboard.

Whilst installing it said something like "old ethernet drivers detected, click yes to uninstall previous drivers (requires restart)" which I did. On rebooting my PC blue screened after the Windows loading screen.

After several more normal boot attempts, I tried booting in "Safe Mode with Networking" - again it blue screened. Then I tried booting normally again, it didnt blue screen but the monitor just goes completely blank after the loading screen!

Next I just tried booting in "Safe Mode". It made it to the windows log in screen, but the mouse and keyboard do not respond. I even tried using an old PS/2 keyboard. Consequently I cannot get into Windows. Strangely though the keyboard works in BIOS so is obviously being detected.

Finally, I thought about doing a repair install or accessing the Recovery Console, but on selecting either option it says no hard drives detected (I have 2 HDD in RAID0 if that makes any difference)!

I have a CD for my motherboard which came with my PC. When I put it in, it says about making a boot disk - is this what I need to do?

I just need to get into Windows so I can reinstall the drivers or do a system restore.

Please, please, please help. I really cant format my hard drives.

Many Thanks.

I'm having problems with windows update. Since about the end of January windows update is only listing the following updates:
Security Update for Microsoft Silverlight (KB2690729) Download size: 6.0 MB
Security Update for Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package (KB2538242) Download size: 2.6 MB

I went ahead and installed the Visual C++ 2005 and 2010 updates. (I ignored silverlight). The 2005 update showed that it installed successfully, the 2010 update failed with error 64C. I let it go for a few days but when I checked for new updates, the same 3 were listed. I inadvertently ran the updates again, with the same result. My first post.
I have an HP Pavillion running XP. This computer did not come with installation discs. It has something called "System Recovery" which rests on a partition of the hard drive for reinstalling windows. Unfortunately as a result of my computer being hijacked and taking over my notepad (which I didn't even know had happened) I did a system recovery, never knowing how drastic it would be. It essentially took my computer back two years to when I bought it. I'm fairly certain it wiped out all the windows updates on my puter. And now in my c:windows folder, there are all these files like this one:
$NtUninstallKB828028$ which contain service pack uninstalls.
Okay I'm saying this not knowing for sure if the system recovery I did is responsible for what I'm about to tell you, but it's background.
I go to windowsupdate.com and nothing happens. Just sits there. No updates appear. I know my service pack 2 install is gone too. What can I do? HELP!

A buddy of mine is trying to update his new Lenovo ThinkPad laptop. It downloads the update, then restarts normally to attempt to install the updates. Once the system restarts, it boots to the update screen and attempts to configure the updates for the OS. Once it gets to about 15%, it says the the update failed to install, then reverts to the original configuration. It does this twice, then finally boots straight to the normal OS and allows log-in. Any reason as to why it may do this?

A:Windows update not updating.

Hi and welcome to SevenForums,
When manually installing updates you need to switch your update settings to Never check for updates and restart the machine first.
Windows Update Settings - Change
After restart verify that the windows update service is not running if it is Stop and switch to Manual apply and okay. (this is actually Important to verify)

Make sure KB3020369 is installed if not manually install it this is the main article page with all versions,
These other links do prompt you to download as soon as you click on them just to give you a heads up

Win-7 32 bit
Win-7 64 bit

Then manually install KB3172605 main article page with all versions,
Win-7 32 bit

Win-7 64 bit

After switch your windows update settings and update service back to what you had prior and manually check for updates and the rest should show up shortly.

Hello,Now that you have posted a log here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic390942.html you should NOT make further changes to your computer (install/uninstall programs, use special fix tools, delete files, edit the registry, etc) unless advised by a MRT Team member, nor should you ask for help elsewhere. Doing so can result in system changes which may not show in the log you already posted. Further, any modifications you make on your own may cause confusion for the helper assisting you and could complicate the malware removal process which would extend the time it takes to clean your computer. From this point on the MRT Team should be the only members that you take advice from, until they have verified your log as clean. Please be patient. It may take a while to get a response because the MRT Team members are EXTREMELY busy working logs posted before yours. They are volunteers who will help you out as soon as possible. Once you have made your post and are waiting, please DO NOT make another reply until it has been responded to by a member of the MRT Team. This really isn't a problem query but a heads up for those that are upgrading to Windows 10 Creator Edition. The other day I upgraded my HP laptop to the new Windows 10 Creator Edition and after the install I wanted to look at something via the Control Panel.  When I launched Control Panel the folder came up and showed a number of applets inside but the screen clocked briefly and the Control Panel abruptly closed with no warning and no error message.  To make a very long story short I found that the IDT Audio driver on my laptop was from 2013 and the IDTNC64.CPL file in the system32 folder that's part of this driver was the reason for my control panel was crashing. The good news is that HP has an updated driver that is Windows 10 compatible and after installing the new driver the problem went away.  Note that I had no trouble with Control Panel on earlier versions of Windows 10 with the old driver but the Creator edition has issues and requires an upgrade. Hope this helps someone.

I just recently got Windows 7 re-installed on my HP dv6t-6100 laptop. Everything works fine except for the display. My resolution is currently 1280 x 1024 and no display drivers or devices are detected. (see picture). Whenever I try to install newer display drivers, I am prompted to restart my computer, but when i do, the computer becomes stuck on the "Starting Windows" screen. (I have tried multiple Intel and AMD dirvers because I believe the original installation was switchable, though i'm not entirely sure what that means or what the purpose of that is.)

When downloading and installing the displays drivers, certain elements were not successfully installed, including Microsoft C++ Redistributable...I'm not sure if this is relevant or not.

If someone could suggest what I could try to fix this I'd greatly appreciate it. With the display issures I'm having trouble using certain programs like 3d modeling and rendering programs which I use heavily. I've also noticed that the display appears incorrectly too wide, for example an image that I know is square appears as a rectangle, stretched out.

Thanks for the help!

Dear Sirs, I?m a big fan of Lenovo products ( even my phone is a Motorola ). But I have a very big problem so please try to help me ! I have a Lenovo G770 laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium. Worked wonderful, with no problems. Espescially that I replaced long time ago the HD with an Intel 240 GB SSD. The boot time was under 30 seconds. Recently, I bought a Windows 10 Pro license (32 bits) to upgrade the laptop. I use the OS on 32 bits because I have some old software that works only on 32 bits (X86).  The problem is that when I boot ( start ) the laptop a black screen appears and stay on the screen for 2 or 3 minutes. I?m desperate. After I made some tests it seems that the problem is for AMD DISPLAY DRIVER ? AMD RADEON HD6650M.  When I uninstall this driver everything is perfect. As you know the laptop has also an Mobile Intel HD Graphics. But I need the AMD for performance and settings. It looks like an incompatibility between Windows 10 and this driver. I use the driver that came with the original Lenovo disc, I downloaded other drivers from Amd and Lenovo sites but I have no succes. Note: To avoid confusion, I would like to mention that this is not the same computer that has been discussed in my previous threads.

I'm borrowing my sister's computer as a 'backup', and when I checked windows update, I found that the most recent update check was 08/26/2010,
and that not even service pack 1 had been installed.

When I checked the update history, I see dozens of failed attempts to download this software:
Windows update software 7.4.7600.226
Accompanied by this error code: 800F081F

After manually upgrading to service pack 2, Windows Update says it can't check for updates until it gets updated itself, but the update always fails.
Is there a way to manually update "windows update"? or maybe use microsoft update instead?

A:Updating Not Working Windows Update

Hi, you can download XP SP2 from here. This will take a longgg time to download, this is normal because the file is 266MB. This is usually not the recommended way to install SP2 but since you can't get it from Windows Updates we will do it this way. Once it downlods, just run it and it should install SP2. I recommend making backups of any files you need just in case something goes wrong. After you install SP2, you should be able to get all of the other updates you need from Windows Updates.Regards,Adam

I searched for a similar topic, but couldn't find anything. Basically, my problem is this. I have a desktop that crashed from a virus or somesuch, and since I was a little too newbish to attempt actually fixing it (though I did get it working for a week), I eventually just gave up and reformatted.

I am now running a clean Windows XP Professional, with only a NETGEAR wireless router program and Firefox 3 installed. Problem? Prior to installing Firefox, I used Windows Update to begin updating my computer, and noted Service Pack 3 was among the downloads. Everything installed just fine, I rebooted my computer, and then went back to Windows Update for the next slew of updates and patches. Here's where the problem comes in. I attempted to download the updates, and they were downloaded just fine, but now that I have them, they refuse to install. When Windows Update installs, they fail. When I manually click install from the system tray, it fails. When I shut the computer down to have the updates auto-configure, they fail to install (more specifically, it reads "installing update 1 of 8" and then just shuts down anyway).

I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong or what's blocking the computer from installing proper, but here's the list of updates:

I had to purchase a new HDD as my old one went bad. Doing so I had reinstalled windows 7 to which over a week now trying to get updates which to no avail has not worked.

Steps I have taken:

1. Downloaded Surt which it just searches for updates for over 2 hours with nothing happening.

2. ran sfc /scannow 4x times with nothing being found.

3. Ran the sfc /scannow boot with nothing found.

4. ran chkdisk with nothing found

5. changed my network to and been running for an hour now with nothing found.

6. tried downloading and running https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3112343 to which also just searches for updates through standalone with nothing happening.

I am clueless at this point.... attached is a copy of the cbs, thanks!

A:Windows 7 update not updating after a week

I actually found a fix reading around the forums that worked perfectly that I bet alot of people never seen or have tried and I added an extra step to doing it.

Vickyv had posted this below
This has worked for me every time:

The solution:

Stop the Windows Update Service (wuauserv).
Download and install KB3050265
Download and install KB3102810
Reboot and check for updates again. All of our machines found their required updates in less than 5 minutes.

Now these steps didn't exactly work as the standalone would just be searching for updates without nothing happening for hours. So if this is happening to anyone else please follows these steps.

1. Go into Task manager and make sure to stop the Windows Update Service (wuauserv).

2. Now in task manager go to services tab, then bottom right corner open "services". Should bring you into a pop up. Scroll down to the windows update service wuauserv and right click hit restart.

3. download patch one specified above and double click to install, it should actually open standalone and take 30 seconds to install the patch. restart should pop up asking to do so, click restart.

4. download the patch two specified above and double click to install, same as last patch. then restart.

5. rerun your normal windows updater for a while and you should finally see updates being found.

It's vital that I don't let Windows update my Nvidia graphics driver as the current versions cause serious problems with the video editing application that I use.

I have Update set up to notify me but not automatically install updates. Is there any way to permanently remove this particular update from the list or do I just have to remember to keep unchecking it's box?

I know I can right-click and hide the update but I'm worried it will still install even though it no longer appears in the list. Also, if this is the way to do it will I still have to watch out for newer versions popping up in the list?

A:Can I permanently stop Windows from updating my graphics driver?

if you right-click on the update, and select Hide, it won't be offered again until it's updated.
Alternatively switch OFF the Givie me Recommended updates the same as important' setting in the WU options.

So after running a fresh install of 7 because I was fed up with 10, I am having even more problems.

Brand new install, literally the only thing I have done was install the drivers, try to run Windows Update, try to update a driver, and then followed the steps in this thread:

Both Windows and Driver updates just hang up on searching. They search, nonstop, and I don't get any results. I also had an issue with .NET Framework 4 not installing, but I think that was because I didn't have SP3? (That was a previous fresh Win 7 install)...

So I need help. I am pretty proficient with computers, but I am at a loss of what to do. Google has been no help.

What version and bit number of Windows 7 did you do a clean install of, and did it include Service Pack 1(SP1)?

Is your computer a factory-brand one or a custom/home-made one?

By the way, Windows 7 has never had a SP2 or SP3 upgrade, so I don't know why you're referring to SP3.

After updating to windows 8.1 preview the graphics driver for intel integrated 3000 card is crashing at times and showing message driver stopped working

A:Graphic driver crashes after updating to windows 8.1 previ

Just an FYI that your issue may be very difficult to resolve; in that, it just started happening after the update to Win 8.1. Now, as you are probably aware, many things can go wrong when one attempts an update to a Preview Release so my advice is to go back to your previous Windows version and I hope you have made the appropriate preparations to do so. Good luck.

If you are updating an existing version of Windows to the Windows 10 Technical Preview, do not be concerned if Windows Update immediately prompts you to reboot your computer because of a new update. long story short, i done goofed and denied all permissions on wmpshare.exe with my antivirus, and any updates that try to modify said file are obviously met with failure. i've just ignored updates that do this for the most part (since they were WMP-specific patches, and i don't use WMP anymore anyway), but now these recent "monthly rollup" updates are failing, all because of wmpshare.exe having no permissions.

after running around in circles in Google, other than a clean install (which i think is overkill for me personally), the only other option i know of is a restore point, and my little mistake was years ago, so that's not really an option for me.

is there any way i can get Windows Update to continue updating in spite of an erroneous file? i'd like it to skip over wmpshare.exe if possible.

Windows has downloaded some update files 1607 to drive C but when rebooting it doesn't even start the update at all it just reboots as normal with the update options still present in the start menu no errors just no update attempted.

I've ran the update troubleshooter and tried checking for more updates but it doesn't stop searching for them.
Would it be safe to delete the update files on drive C and see if windows re-downloads them again maybe?

I've downloaded the anniversary update exe. but it looks like its stuck at 0%

I got some serious problems. About one week ago I accidentally cut off power of my pc while he was updating. When rebooting I got nothing but a blank desktop image, unable to give any input (mouse, keyboard, control + shift + delete). Control + shift + delete made the screen go black, so I assume this was my computer "loggng off" (enter caused the blank desktop screen to appear again).

Normally I fix my computer problems myself, so I started to reboot in safe mode. This worked without flaws, I could start the system repair and startup repair. This however, made no changes (still got the blank desktop screen on booting windows in normal mode).

Then I decided to reinstall Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit entirely (on my ssd). There where a few problems (original installation cd wasn't recognized), but in the end (with someone elses cd), I got it running. I decided to start installing my motherboarddrivers (LAN, onboard VGA, ...). All went well. Then I installed the VGA drivers of my dedicated nVidia GTX 570, and there it went wrong; upon restart: same blank desktop. This time I had some input: I could right click on desktop, make new folders, go into configuration manager. But no cmd, no task manager, no msconfig, ...

So, I thought: my VGA card broke down; and I tried another one (nVidia 9800GTX). Same problems.
Fresh installation, now on a conventional 750GB HDD. Again: all went well, even installing the VGA drivers (note: I didn't install the mo... Read more

As for the other error code you mention (0x80300024), have you been dual-booting with Linux?

If so, you need to rebuild the Windows 7 master boot record.

Windows will not check for updates or run updates.
When I attempt to make windows check for updates I get error - windows update can not currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart.
I have restarted the computer more times than I can count.
I tried to download a SURT. Says it downloaded but then I get error - Installer encountered an error: 0x80070424 The specified service does not exist as an installed service.
I tried to print a Log Collection I get a Error: File not found or no read permission.
However I was able to run a SFC and it came back - Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrityviolations.

I have been reading online forums and messing with this for 3 weeks.
This is a work computer and I need to install updates for work but they say the updates will not run until Windows is updated.
