Help, Norton Auto Protect Won't Turn On

Q: Help, Norton Auto Protect Won't Turn On

I am so frustrated with Norton Internet Security Tech Support. I have been going around in circles with them. I have followed all of the their instructions. I had to uninstall and then reinstall Norton Internet Security 2006. It will not allow me to turn on the auto protect feature. Norton's chat tech support provides their instructions in pieces and parts. I had my husband, he's a Sys Devlpmnt Mgr at an Intl Financial Institution, follow their instructions and we both got the same result....the Auto Protect will NOT turn on. Someone please help before I totally go insane.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi, I've had a quick look and couldn't find any more threads for this situation so thought I'd ask, I've got great help here in the past.

I've had Norton Internet Security 2007 installed for a while and everything was fine, but now the Auto-Protect feature seems to be permanantly turned off. Just under the address field in I.E. it displays a red bar which is usually green, and the words "Browsing not safe: Auto-protect turned off.

Although I'm no expert I'm not a total nub when it comes to PC's and the software workings but I've found no solution for this. I've been into the options to turn on auto protect.

Norton Internet Security - Settings - under basic security you've got Auto-Protect but it always either displays error or off in red and sometimes even displays on in green. So obviously I click that, click 'turn on' and if it previously said off, nothing happens, sometimes it changes to 'on' and I click ok, but the problem persists and when I go back into the settings it instantly sets back to 'off'. If it previously said error the live update pops up and I run that time and time again, sometimes there's an extra item or two in there that needs to be updated (Which I do) but most of the time it's blank, obviously I leave time between running these. And after it's updated... nothing has changed.

And the most perplexing is that sometimes even though the "Auto-pr... Read more

As above. I just want to know what is that. It shows as disabled. I'm not looking to re-activate it as i've been looking at an alternative Antivirus software. Is it in anyway got to do with "Blah blah blah program is trying to access a file or something, Choose whether u grant access". I figure that is a firewall program, but not sure. That, is shown, as working. So i'm wondering if the Norton Auto Protect has anything to do with the other features.

A:What is Norton Auto Protect

Hello,

Norton Auto Protect is not a firewall, its real time protection. Some nortons suites come with a firewall however. It all depends on which package you have.

A:Norton's Auto Protect will NOT enable!

You can try uninstalling and re-installing the application, but my guess is that a virus has already made itself at home on your PC.

Use your Norton CD as a boot disk and perform a full scan. This may clean it off enough to cleanly install Norton again and run for sweeping the remainder out.

Hi guys,

I have a customers XPH SP2 machine that I have been disinfecting. I've cleared most of the problems but one still eludes me.

When I check the status of Auto-Protect in the AV section of Norton Internet Security it is switched off - so I re-enable it and the icon goes green - about 1 min later a Norton dialog window flashes up then disappears after which the status of Auto Protect has changed back to disabled.

I have run housecall, NAV, stinger etc, etc but nothing is showing up!

Here's the Hijack log from the machine.

Thanks in advance for any help as always.

today when I tried to run live update for my Norton AV I got a reply that the computer could not connect to computer for some reason. so I decided to use the intelligent updater option which I have had to do from time to time, but this time NAV would not take the updates and went one step further and poped up a blue screen that said "Unable to initialize the virus scanning engine database files". I then restarted the computer and tried to update both online and intel. update but neither worked.
Thinking something got lost form the program I decided to un-install and re-install NAV. Well the same thing is happening and the same blue screen is poping up. Is there anyone out there who might know what is going on.

I go into Norton 360 virus and spyware Protection Settings and check Turn On Auto Protect and click Apply. But nothing changes. I still get same messages in browser and from system tray. When I return to Norton 360 Protection Settings, the Turn On Auto Protect box is unchecked.

Hi, Welcome to TSG!!

Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
Doubleclick on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
Click on Install.
It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

I am very frustrated with Norton AV 2004. After installing, Auto-Protect is always disabled. I have uninstalled and reinstalled. Disabled my Zone Alarm Pro. Turned off my Sound Blaster Audigy 7.1 Sound Card. I've done everything there is to do, to "supposedly" fix this problem. These are the tech support issues for this problem on the Norton Web Site at this link. --->

Norton of course is no help after that. They want money for any tech support. Even after you purchase their software. I wish I did my homework before I bought Norton software.

If I would have known there is no "live" tech support, I would have purchased another company's anti-virus software. I guess Norton is too big to deal with the little guy that just wants to protect his computer from viruses.

I have an Alienware Area 51 Computer:
Win XP Pro
3.0 GHZ Pentium 4 w/HT Tech
NVidia GeForce Extreme 256 megs of DDR RAM

Other software running in my task bar:

Incredimail
Webshots
Zone Alarm Pro (but in Program Control all checks are green for Norton to access server, as trusted zones. But when trying to get my Norton Auto Protect to work. I turn Zone Alarm completely off.)
TV Tonic - Wavexpress (This software that is always running. I get Movie Trailers, Music Videos, and News all in full screen high resolution motion video. Downloads daily. Just in case you're not sure what that is.)
Weatherbug

That's about it except of course regular Microsoft XP system files.

A couple of days ago, Norton Systemworks refused to load for me at all, so I ran the stinger and caught a couple of worms. And everything worked normally again.

Yesterday, I got a couple of alerts for the W32 Blaster Worm, which Norton said it couldn't fix. And suddenly, autoprotect wasn't automatically enabled. Every time I restart, I'd have to enable it myself. So I downloaded the tool from symantec and ran it, but it said it hadn't found the blaster worm. I also installed Microsoft's patch for it. However, Norton still refuses to autoload upon Windows startup. Any suggestions for what might be causing that and how to fix it?

Thanks!

A:Help HJT Log - Trojan.Holax - blocking norton auto protect

Welcome to TSF.

We recommend not using Ares since it's a P2P file sharing program. It's also the reason why he got NavExcel spyware installed in the first place.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that Display the contents of System Folders' is checked. Windows XP's search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that Search system folders, Search hidden files and folders, and Search subfolders are checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Turn off system restore by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn off System Restore. Click Apply and then OK. Restart your computer. After we are finishe... Read more

Regardless of what I've tried the Auto Protect will not activate. I,ve followed all Norton's suggestions. The error is technically "auto protect error 0x000003EE". Please help.

A second issue is that she seems to have a Wimad-E Trojan virus and I am wondering what the best way to remove it would be. Her Norton seems to be updated with the latest definitions.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

5 months ago the system was slowing and getting somewhat erratic. I did a Win XP SP2 System Restore w/o any problems. This time, again the system was slowing and a bit erratic. After the System restore and restart a window appears: "The Norton Anti-Virus AutoProtect Driver could not be loaded. Your system is not protected from viruses. Please restart your computer" .
Restarts produce the same window. The Norton icon in the bottom bar has a red X and says "Norton Anti-Virus AutoProtect Disabled". Clicking on "Enable AutoProtect" does nothing. I've tried the Norton automatic technical support for the 2004 Norton Anti-Virus. Went thru all the steps it takes me through: e.g., Went into Control Panel, Windows Firewall and exempted Norton, etc. But it tells me to get Live Updates. But The Norton AntiVirus window says everything is OK. Yet, clicking Live Update (as the automatic technical support directs) produces message:
"LU1814. Live Update could not retrieve the catalog file of available Symantec product and component updates. Please verify that you are able to connect to the internet and run Live Update again." Obviously I can connect to the internet but the problem remains. I did have problems w Juno after the System Restore: had to reinstall Juno, and continue to get some connection problems but I'm getting my email and am able to write this.
I've run out of ideas. Suggestions, please.
