Services failing to start(no internet, xp theme, sound ect...)

Q: Services failing to start(no internet, xp theme, sound ect...)

When my computer starts the Windows XP theme is replaced with the classic and after im signed in I have no internet connection and sometimes no audio. I checked my system logs and noticed a lot of services failed to start. When I go into services.msc a lot of the services set to automatic weren't running and WebClient is stuck in "stopping". When I start the themes service my xp theme returns and the same with Windows Audio. To regain internet access I have to go into task manager and end the svchost.exe process(es) under LOCAL SERVICE, then go into services.msc and first start DHCP Client and then WebClient. When online using internet explorer(8) once in a while a new window will open to a random site or advertisement. Once IE wouldn't connect and then just closed by itself. When I ran GMER i stopped my antivirus program and my firewall (i didnt receive any alerts) but I left IE running (three windows) and all turned white and froze, I tried opening task manager but it wouldn't open and when I hit ctrl + alt + delete only my background showed and my computer froze. I am running Avast! Antivirus protection and Sygate Personal Firewall on my computer. The AVG browser plugins are enabled in IE. I have Windows XP Pro SP3. It looks like the same problem that Tibasco is having.

Preferred Solution: Services failing to start(no internet, xp theme, sound ect...)

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

It appears that you have two antivirus programs installed and running, avast! and AVG. While this may seem like better protection, they can actually conflict with one another and cause system instability or even system hangs. Please choose one to keep and uninstall the other via Add or Remove Programs in your Control Panel. I suggest uninstalling AVG.

------------------------------------------------------

I need to see all 3 logs in order to help you. I need to see the Attach.txt log, and a gmer log.

Please follow our pre-posting process outlined here:

After running through all the steps, you shall have a proper set of logs. Please post/attach the logs in your next reply.

i've spent hours looking online for the same problem. there are many "similar" ones, but not exactly like mine, and NONE of the solutions are working out. hoping maybe describing my specific situation narrows it down.
both the themes service, and dhcp service, fail to start automatically after a restart.

but they start just fine when i start them up myself.

they are both set to automatic.

the terminal services logon is set to the default profile. (manual startup though)

even though dhcp and themes service are set to start automatically, they time out and fail to start. (saw this time out in the event log viewer)

when i go in to start the services manually via services.msc, they start up fine with no errors of any kind!!

i do not get any errors whatsoever when i start them manually. they simply time out when they are asked to start automatically after a reboot.
i am stumped. idk why this is happening. i ran avira antivirus, all clean. i ran malwarebytes anti-malaware, found like 30 things, removed. idk what else to run. i did find junk in the HJT log that i removed on my own. (redirects, extra bho toolbars and the like) that just fixed some nasty redirects IE was getting whenever i clicked a link in google.

spyware blaster is installed, and i'm currently running superantispyware.
i'm stumped. these services just refuse to start up on their own. i tried line 30 of kelly's xp tweaks. all 3 dhcp dependencies are where they should be,... Read more

Hey everyone...

My New Viao thats just 2 weeks old got the best of. It currently have Vista business.

It all started when I was downloading a movie that required Quicktime. I installed quick time and restarted the labtop. After logging into desktop. i received "explorer has stopped working". i was not able to log on to my desktop from then on. when i would open the task manager i would recieve errors. i wasnt able to restart explorer.

i restarted the computer is safe mode with cmd. did a sfc scan.
it told me that it was 99% complete but it was not able to fix all the corrupted files. i then did a chkdsk scan, and re-did the sfc scan. same out come. i have the CBS log to see which files it couldn't fix.

Now every time i log onto desktop, everything starts failing,
"windows live mseeneger stopped working, "host process for windows services stopped working" , 'windows media player stopped working" my Internet explored disappeared and i get a "Iexploror is not a valid win32 application". It cant install the drivers when i insert a USB key. i even get the blue screen of death at times.

I did a system restore and it didnt help. i tried to repair windows through my vista cd, and it didnt detect anything ot repair. I'm really stumped on this. I do know that everything works in safe mode.

i have the file i got from System file checker, i didnt want to post it, theres alot of text!

Hi folks,

I think I'm infected or have a serious problem with my Vista OS.

I was logged on recently when I noticed my Avast was no longer running. Trying to enable the protection again failed (no message).
I tried manually starting the Avast service and it failed with the error 'Error 1075: The dependency service does not exist or has been marked for deletion'
I also noticed that I had no internet access and a whole bunch of other services failed to start (including Windows Firewall).
The next thing I tried was a system restore (as an update was done recently I used the one before that).
This got me back the internet but no firewall or avast.
I ran CCleaner (I know now that I should probably not have and asked for help first but I'm new to this kind of thing).
I tried Malwarebytes but it kept finding an object and then immediately crashed.
After reading many posts/topics I didn't find any common posts that would indicate that I could find a common solution and fix it myself.
Many posts recommended taking a few logs so I tried to run DDS and GMER. All crashed while running.
I then tried the Microsoft rootkit indentifier. This also gave a lot of problems. Blank screens, crashes but eventually told me that CMD.exe was causing a problem before crashing one more time.

Lastly I went into safe mode and was able to run DDS, GMER and Malwarebytes. For GMER I had to unclick devices for it to run (didn't like the shadow protect driver it seems).

Hi, *trying* to fix my dad's laptop. He's been receiving BSODs the past couple of days, but I haven't been able to get the crash code, I'll try to add it later. I've attached the .zip with the crashlogs/system data.

Before the BSOD, he gets some errors in the event viewer, where:

The [EXAMPLE] service failed to start due to the following error:
The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.

He gets about 10 errors over about 10, maybe 15 minutes.
The BSODs started on the 11/08/16. No new hardware has been installed, nor software.

Specs:
Dell Inspiron 5547
Intel Core i7 4510U
Windows 10 Home
8GB RAM
AMD Radeon R7 M265

Help appreciated! :)

My pc running windows 7 64bit is currently not connecting to the internet, I can't hear any sound, and it's stuck on the windows classic theme. On September 26, I used windows update to update a few things (can't remember what they were) then the computer restarted. After rebooting and logging in, I ran CCleaner to clean the file system to possibly remove any junk files left behind by the updates. I then ran the registry cleaner in CCleaner and it came up with a few errors, so I allowed the program to fix them. I also changed a few things in services.msc because I knew a few programs were operating that I didn't need (can't remember these either). I then continued to do an essay. I shut the computer off and went to bed. The next morning, my mom tried using the computer but it couldn't access the internet and the theme had changed to the windows classic one. I have no idea what happened, but if I were to guess it might have something to do with my changes in services.msc... I've searched around the internet for any solutions but have found none. The only thread I've found that is exactly the same problem as mine is one I found on this site: www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/443155/no-sound-no-internet-windows-classic/
I've tried using MBAM and Windows Repair All in One as suggested on the second page of that thread, since those steps were what worked for the original poster. However, they did not work for me, so I am now creating my own thread as a means to finding a solution.... Read more

Hello, Im having a huge problem with my PC. I downloaded a newer version of my graphics card driver, and when it completed, I restarted my computer. When I logged back in, the theme was set to Windows Classic and wouldn't change back. It has no internet connection, and it seems that it am missing an option for internet connections altogether. It is also saying that "the audio service is not running" and I cant hear anything. Lastly, it seems to be processing/loading things very slowly, and sometimes even freezes, making me restart.

I ran DDS, and these are the results:

Since I got home from school yesterday I've been getting some pop ups and random crap and also half the time my internet doesn't even work. Today I experienced my computer not even being able to get through the start ups and it would just restart after I got this error (it went too fast for me to read). Also when my computer is able to start I get these random prompts from my StartUp Monitor asking if I want to allow these random .dll files being able to be able to start on start up. Also most of the time my internet fails to even work, I'm connected to the internet but web pages won't load. The other computer connected to this network loads pages fine all the time so I know it just has to be something with my computer. I did a System Restore to a few days back to see if it would help and it barely did so I'm seeking help here now.

Hi, so a few days ago, I using my laptop until the battery ran out. After I turned it back on, I noticed that the theme was changed to Windows Classic. I also noticed that my laptop would not connect to the internet at all (wired/wireless). After doing a little bit of research, I found out that this might have been caused by malware/a rootkit/TDSS. I did use the TDSSKiller, thinking that I was going to disable it, but even if I found the threats, it didn't show any change. *Note* I did delete the infected drivers, and now that I read some the instructions of what to do, I probably should have just posted a log here. I did do a scan again, and the TDSSKiller found no threats. I tried to use some other malware anti-virus (Malware Bytes), but it would not let me. For now, I'm not going to even touch the computer until I get some help. Here is my DDS Log. Hi there,my name is Marius and I will assist you with your malware related problems. Before we move on, please read the following points carefully. First, read my instructions completely. If there is anything that you do not understand kindly ask before proceeding. Perform everything in the correct order. Sometimes one step requires the previous one. Hi All,

I hope someone can shed some light on this.

I have patched my windows using UniversalThemePatcher_20090409 which reports success on the three DLL files it patches.

I use windows in inverted colour and to correct the colours of the progress bars, i.e.
Magenta -> Green
Cyan -> Red

I have built the attached MSSTYLE using Win7 Style Builder and edited the built-in Aero.theme to point to this modified msstyle.

The problem I have is that if I attempt to login to windows when this theme is enabled, windows will log me out again immediately (I must then load windows in Safe-Mode to disable Theme service in order to login again).

If however I choose a different Aero theme that uses the built-in MSSTYLE (e.g. Characters Theme) before logging out, it will log me again just fine and I am then free to select the modified Aero Theme with the correct colour progress bars. I think I also have to switch to a non-aero theme e.g. High-Contrast first before returning to the Win7 Aero theme).

I feel I am doing something wrong here but I'm not sure what this is, if anyone here can shed any light on it that would be marvelous.

It feels like something in the theme is confusing or crashing the process that occurs between logging in screen and user desktop.

I have attached the theme in the hope it helps you to help me (ultimately to help myself!)

All the very best for now,
Lynysys

Since I got home from school yesterday I've been getting some pop ups and random crap and also half the time my internet doesn't even work. Today I experienced my computer not even being able to get through the start ups and it would just restart after I got this error (it went too fast for me to read). Also when my computer is able to start I get these random prompts from my StartUp Monitor asking if I want to allow these random .dll files being able to be able to start on start up. I did a System Restore to a few days back to see if it would help and it barely did so I'm seeking help here now.

Hello sevenforums

After having absolutely no issues when I shut the computer down, to the computer acting strange and having several issues at the next startup. The issues are mainly related to the network, but not limited to it, so I decided to post it here, but unsure if it is the correct forum.

Note: I'm translating all messages from Danish to English, so they might not be completely accurate.

Issues are currently that I am not able to connect to the internet with the message: "service or group dependency failed to start". I'm unable to turn on the firewall with the following error: "Error 0x8007042c". Several services are't starting and I am unable to start them, I get "Error 5: Access denied", I was able to fix this on the diagnostic politic service, by editing permission in the registry editor at two folders called WMI and DPS. I'm currently scanning the computer with MSE, but I somewhat feel this is going to be a waste of time, but it is currently my last resort, except repair with Win7 CD or formatting of course. In my my task manager there is currently nothing taking CPU power at all, yet CPU use is at 30-50%, I'm guessing MSE is using CPU power, but why is it not listed?

So far I have tried the following:
sfc /scannow (Found no issues)
netsh reset
Changing permission in registry to get diagnostic tools working (Which then found no issues or where unable to fix it)

Any ideas or suggestions?

A:Services disabled and unable to start, no internet, no firewall, etc.

Do you have a Restore Point from before the issue? It sounds like it can't hurt to run it if so. Also I would try a full scan with Malwarebytes Antimalware if the Restore Point doesn't eliminate the problem.

Edit: MBAM free version is just fine for scanning.

I think that a friends computer has a nasty lurking somewhere on it. XP SP3 with the latest updates

She was suddenly unable to connect to the internet. I have looked at here machine and it seems to be a winsock problem (tried the netsh winsock reset without success).

I then noticed that her firewall wasn't running. I checked this and found that the firewall/ics service wasn't running. Tried to start it and got error 2 missing file.

So off to do an XP repair. Unable to do that as it asks for administrator password (I built this computer so I know there isn't one set) hit enter and it drops me to the command prompt.

It boots normally, it just doesn't connect to the internet. Many of the services are disabled.

I have done a startup repair with and without a disk (the CD we have is NOT from emachines - it's a standard Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit disk. The repairs never find a problem. I have done an sfc /scannow. No intefgrity violations were detected.

When I run services.msc I see that DHCP Client is not running. When I attempt to start it, I get that it could not start because the dependency service or group failed to start. If I go to properties and click on Dependencies I get a Win32 error - the service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it.

I get the exact behavior when I try to start DNS Client.

There are no restore points available. There are no viruses or malware according to TDSSKiller, Malwarebytes and ComboFix. When I try to use Internet Explorer I get the 'page cannot be displayed' . When I then click on 'Diagnose Connection Problems', I get 'Troubleshooting Couldn't Identify the Problem.'

There's about 50GB worht of music and videos on this PC and the idea of saving all that externally, plus the drivers, reinstalling and putting everything back is a lot of time and work.

Hello bleepingcomputer.com.

First of all, thank you for your volunteer hours to help people like me with their computer problems!

Just recently, my computer's internet access was lost. Internet explorer opens fine (I have Windows Vista Home Premium), however, the text simply says "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" to any page I try to connect to. Doing a ping request to google.com also failed as it "could not find host". As well, the start bar at the bottome of the screen looks like the Windows 98 start bar (grey and old-looking) and the themes settings offer me no option of the Vista-looking bar. Right-clicking and trying to adjust the taskbar doesn't help; it says that my taskbar appearance is the Vista-look when it's not. When I try to play any music in Windows Media Player, it says, "Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There might not be a sound device installed on your computer, it might be in use by another program, or it might not be functioning properly." As well, in trying to uninstall any program it says, "The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance." These seem to be the problems I'm having as well as I can state it, I have a HJT and DDS logs attached. Hi, I am having a problem with my computer, and I was hoping you could help me. I am using Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3, and have recently installed the system, 'couse it had crashed. Anyway, the problem is with my appearance and sounds. Sometimes, when I turn on my computer I see Windows Classic style appearance, and I can't change it. This was happening to me earlier, but I just restart my computer and everything is OK again. Now it's getting on my nerves... The sound problem has nothing to do with the appearance problem. Sometimes I can't hear anything on speakers, but I hear error sound from my computer (from that big box, I don't know how do you say it on english ) and when I open Volume Control it says:"There are no active mixer devices available. To install mixer devices, go to Control Panel, click Printers and Other Hardware, and then click Add Hardware. The program will now close." I solve it easily again with my restart button, but I can't keep restarting my computer... Please help! Thanks!

Hi, I am having a weird issue in that when I try to set the Start Navigation to none and then hit apply, the sound setting in the control panel it reverts the sound back to the original sound and the theme listing at the top shows blank. If I try to delete that blank theme, use the windows default or make my own I get the same result. It just sets it back to the default sound theme though it shows as a blank theme in the theme switching menu. This just started happening not too long ago and I was thinking maybe somehow I don't have the proper permissions now to change this setting. I am the system administrator and am logged in as such. I really don't know how I would go about fixing this or checking to see if the permissions are correct or more specifically where I should be checking the permissions.

Recently I feel something very strange, the sound theme I usually use isn't correct. That's Garden theme. Two weeks ago, I re-installed my windows 7, and I feel think isn't correct from that time, before this (old OS), that sound theme was still correct, of course the two OS are not related to each other.
The reason I say it isn't correct because when I choose the Nature theme, I still hear the sound theme of this (Garden) exactly the same as Windows default. The rest themes still works.
I go to to folder C:\Windows\Media to check for the Garden folder, it's still there.
I have used SFC but it didn't work.

Recently I feel something very strange and I realize the sound theme I usually use isn't correct. That's Garden theme.
The reason I say it isn't correct because when I choose the Nature theme, I still hear its sound theme (Garden) exactly the same as Windows default. The rest themes still work.
I go to to folder C:\Windows\Media to check for the Garden folder, it's still there.
I have used SFC but it didn't work. Watch the video, listen very carefully when I click to Nature theme and switch to Default theme. The sound they play is one

Hello, TSF I am having problems similar to another user(MorningReport), who you guys helped out. Here thier post http://www.techsupportforum.com/f100...ms-486597.html

Woke up this morning with my Windows XP theme switched to the hideous classic theme. It wont let me change it back to the Wins XP theme nor does it show up on the theme list. Next problem is sometimes I get no sound at all with the little volume control icon near the clock missing. Last I cant seem to connect to the internet at all. It either says not connected, or it says aquiring ip address endlessly. Im connecting wirelessly using a 2wire usb thing (not sure what it's called) to a 2wire Att U-Verse modem. Not sure what's going on or how it happened. Please help thanks.

My computer has lost all sound. When I try to change the volume I get an error: "There are no active mixer devices available." I have reinstalled the sound drivers to no avail. After restarting my computer, I found that the theme had reverted back to "Windows Classic", and that I was unable to change it because "Windows XP Theme" was no longer an option. A system restore to the previous day did nothing to help.

This all started as I played a game of Supreme Commander and it froze. I was forced to shut down my comp by holding in the power button.

Hello krilitor

Sound problem
1) Click on Start and Run
2) Type the following
services.msc
OK

3) Scroll down to Windows Audio in the right-hand column and double-click on it
4) Make sure the Startup Type is set to Automatic and click on the Start button under Service Status.
The Windows Audio service should restart and the error with the volume control should be resolved.

If this does not help I think you should look for an updated driver

XP Theme
Check if the ?Themes? Service is started and set to Automatic
Click on Start and Run
2) Type the following
services.msc
OK

Follow the same instructions as above, this time for "Themes"

If that is not it, try this fix

A:theme tune on start up

Hi 8ball, welcome to TSF...

you can change the default sounds in the Sounds and Audio devices applet in the Control Panel:

- Start -> Run -> type:
mmsys.cpl
- Click OK
- Select the sounds tab and make the changes you wish..save the sound profile then apply it and that should do it.

Hope that helps

My brand new Dell laptop keeps losing its active window focus. I have tried to pinpoint the problem to a service or startup and did not find anything specific.
I am now checking the System logs and I see things like :
The Windows Modules Installer Service changes every couple of seconds its start mode from demand to auto and from auto to demand. There are almost 20 changes from one state to the other in 2 minutes.
The Computer browser service starts/stops several times in a few minutes.
The Multimedia Class Scheduler service starts/stops every 3 or 4 minutes.
Is this normal ? How do I troubleshoot this ?

You might want to check in Event Viewer for some clues, but as it's a brand new computer I think you need to contact Dell Support as well.

found these out after a few times of trial and error.... First mostly for startup and shutdown sounds only, people often have sounds that "cut out after 30 seconds or so". problem, sample rate for sound is too high. windows can only handle 16KHz sampling rates. anymore and the sounds will not play thier entire duration. found this out after some tweaking. if you have goldwave sound editor, you can resample the rate top the 16,000 hz so the sounds play properly.

other item. windows XP, tweak UI powertoy, and windows themes.

not sure why yet, but these three dont play well. tweak ui, plays well with most of the parts of the windows themes, however, the startup and shutdown sounds for some reason are affected by the installation of powertoy, and after tweak UI is installed, will not play AT ALL; unless you do a windows xp reinstall (reforemat not necessary to restore start and shut sounds) but reading this will hopefully save you from hours or reinstalling programs and settings. if anyone else has had this conflict with start and shutdown sounds and tweak UI, please tell me if there is a way to get the sounds to play with tweak UI installed. i am not installing it at this time, as right now all my sounds work YAY!

So I went there after some suggestions by some members on here, and tried to turn a few programs automatic(not the delayed start) but when I tried to start some of them, I got this message:

Error 1068: the dependency service or group failed to start

So is there a way to fix this?

A:Error 1068 failed to start when trying to start services

Yes, possibly possible! What are the names of the services you are dealing with?

Double click the service - go to the "Dependencies" tab - Check the service names list under "This service depends on the following system components" and then make sure that all the services listed there are already started.

For example, if you're trying to start a service which has dependency on "Windows firewall" service, you need to first make sure Windows firewall service is STARTED.

Hello,

i have xp home running on another laptop and someone in my family was messing around with itunes and ipods and tried to remove these programs.

When they restarted the computer the internet was not connecting and when i looked into it i found that basically all the services in computer managment are now disabled.

When i try to start any, including network connections for the internet i get the message:

Configuration manager: The plug and play service or another required service is not available.

There are no system restores before this happened so how can i get these services working again?

thanks

Hi guys I have these problem.

My browsers crash as soon as I search something on Google. I've tried on IE, Firefox, and Google Chrome. What happens is that I can access www.google.com, but as soon as I search something on it and hit the search button, the browser will crash within a second. Same with yahoo and other search engines.

Another problem is that I have no sound on my laptop! Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't.

Another problem is that my taskbar at the bottom automatically changes to Windows 98.

I ran Malwarebytes, AVG, Avast in normal mode and safe mode, and erased somethings that they had found. But all 3 problems continue to happen.

I tried doing system restore to the date before I got the problem but I can't, whenever I do it, a message comes up that your system couldn't be restored to whatever date.

Please help me guys, thanks.
