HP 2159m Monitor Flickering issue

Q: HP 2159m Monitor Flickering issue

Hi everybody, I'm posting today because my HP 2159m monitor is flickering when I connect it via hdmi to my laptop. I have tested another monitor and a separate cord and I have determined the issue to be with the monitor it self. What I came here to find out, is where there is some sort of tweaking I need do to my display settings to get it work, or if there is a way to determine if the monitor is just burnt out. Any help would be appreciated, thank you!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello all. When the monitor goes to sleep, I cannot seem to wake it up.  Keyboard and mouse do nothing.  The computer is still on.  When I press any of the buttons on the bottom (other than the off button), it searches for the computer and says it cannot find a signal.  I end up rebooting the computer. I have gotten around it by changing the sleep settings (control panel -- power settings -- sleep: NEVER).  However, I would like the monitor to turn off when not in use and turn back on when prompted. Suggestions? Thanks keith

I have the same monitor.  Try this:  push menu on the monitor, select factory reset then go to Source Control and check to see you have the right video source selected for your monitor.  If this doesn't work then download the latest video card driver.  I am using ATI for my graphics card on my e9280t. What model PC are you using?

I have the HP 2159m 21.5" widescreen monitor and I am well pleased with it; in fact, I like it so well that I am considering a second one to replace the one we are using on our other PC.

A local guy has a nice looking HP 2210m that is the same size and looks much like my 2159m; and he is wanting to trade it to me for some cherry lumber that I have.

I tried finding the 2210 on Amazon so that I could compare it's description with the 2159, but no success.

Which is the more recent version, my 2159 or the 2210 ?

I suspect the 2210 may be the newer version, as it has a bit quicker response time and makes mention of dynamic contrast in it's description on the HP site; but, no year of manufacture/release that I can see.

Then I see that Amazon has brand new HP 21.5" with LED and IPS for $100 delivered; actually a bit less than I would have in the 2210.

My main use of a monitor is photo viewing and editing.

I don't understand the differences between LCD and LED; which is considered best for my purposes ?

Hello, I have a Samsung SyncMaster 204B LCD monitor that is flickering after being turned on from being off for more than half an hour or so.The screen appears to be very dull and flickers a bit for about a minute or two, until it "warms up" then the screen brightness and clarity becomes normal, and the flickering stops. It seems to work normally when left on indefinitely.

Is this an early sign of failure? Repairable at all? It's close to 4 years old.I paid $500 for it at the time (right before LCD prices dropped significantly ) so I'd like to get at least a couple more years out of it.

Any suggestions? Thanks for reading.

Back in October I started noticing flickering green pixels on dark backgrounds on my screen, the flickering green pixels, when they are present are always in the same place.

The first thing I did was buy a new DVI cable and then I ran it from the monitor to a different DVI port in back of the GPU. The issue seemed fixed but then a day later the intermittent green pixels came back, at that point I totally uninstalled the newer Nvidia drivers I had recently installed using DDU and installed the drivers I never had issues with which were from early 2014. After I did that the problem seemed gone and everything was fine until last month when I replaced my mouse. I noticed my mouse pointer had three black dots following behind it in a horizontal pattern. I then removed the Nvidia drivers from early 2014 and installed the most current Nvidia drivers, I believe they're from the 14th of December. After I did this the three black dots following behind the mouse pointer vanished but a week or two later, the intermittent green pixels came back.

1. The intermittent green pixels do not show up in screenshots, I've taken numerous screenshots of the screen when they are present but in the screenshots they are nowhere to be seen.

2. They're showing up more often lately.

3. They don't seem to show up when if I set the display to a lower resolution or when I'm in the bios screen.

4. The GPU is a Nvidia 450 GTS and it is not overclocked and is usually running at 29c, the fan is runni... Read more

Hello and welcome Deviancy now my first thought was the monitor may be going south but in view of the changes around you swapping cables and drivers and the fact that the card is five years old now makes me wonder if the card is going south.

Have you access to another monitor to see if the same thing happens?

Second it may as well to test that card with this FurMark: VGA Stress Test, Graphics Card and GPU Stability Test, Burn-in Test, OpenGL Benchmark and GPU Temperature | oZone3D.Net now this can put a fair bit of stress on the card so best run when you are nearby to check things like temps etc.

hi, Today when i turned on my computer everything was fine. I used it for a short while and proceeded to put it in standby mode for about 1 hour or so, when i woke it from standby i immediately noticed that in the top right and bottom left corner the screen is flickering [as though i have set the refresh rate lower, but i have checked and it was not changed from 85hz] I am prone to migrains so i absolutely have to have the refresh rate set as high as possible to use my computer and it was never been a problem. The weird thing is that sometimes it stops flickering and goes back to normal, but that doesn't last long. I'm completely at a loss as to what is causing it as i didn't change anything between yesterday and today. I tried reinstalling my gpu driver with no luck, i've checked the cords and they are all plugged in correctly. My computer is by no means showing any different behaviour it runs just as good as always just this flickering. unfortunately i do not have another monitor so if anyone has any idea what this may be i would be very grateful. - Could it possibly be that the power cable from my monitor to plug socket is dying? It almost appears more as the corner of the screen is shaking slightly.

-UPDATE. My mothers room is right next to mine and i happened to go into her room and notice she had a heater directly on the wall separating our rooms so i turned it off [while the flickering was happening] and i moved it and so far i haven't experienced the flickering bu... Read more

Hello, I have a Thinkpad x270 laptop running Windows 10.Laptop is connected to external DELL P2719H monitor through HDMI cable. Resolution is Full HD. I am using wireless keyboard and mouse.I have updated all the drivers in 2 steps - first, I did "Windows Updates", and then, second, I went through all devices in "Device Manager" in order to update all the remaining drivers.  Problem is the following -  my display has flickering issues. Generally it happens when I move the mouse. You can see this on the video below. Flickering on the video bellow happens when I go over the small video built-in into the website. This happens couple of times per day. I thought that it might be caused by wireless mouse or HDMI cable or Display, but my testing showed thata) similar flickering issues sometimes happen with mouse turned OFF and disconnected from the laptop andb) I don't experience such issues with the same HDMI cable, same DELL P2719H display, but with different laptop running Windows 7. So I think it might be caused by x270 or Windows 10 problems. What are your thoughts? What troubleshooting steps could be made?

Hi,  I have a Lenovo Z50-70 laptop(GeForce 840m(4gb) and i7).  When I plug in my external monitor using VGA cable, it starts flickering and looks like its trying to auto adjust every 3-4 seconds. I have latest Intel HD and Nvidia display drivers installed. I tried to attach the same monitor to my old laptop and everything works fine, so its not cable or monitor problem. Also tried to remove laptop charger, changing display settings etc., and the problem still remains. No idea what else can I do to prevent this permanently.Interesting part: When I launch any game then flickering goes away. When I exit the game, flickering comes back. Its so weird. Thank you in advance for your help.

A:Lenovo Z50-70 external monitor flickering issue.

Check the output frequencies the monitor/display is getting. Either they're exceeding the display capability and/or the refresh freq is off, 60HZ is the norm for flat panel displays while some will handle higher up to 75HZ but only lower will be visible to the eye. The resolution may also be wrong as it may not be detected to set the correct resolution for that display as well.

I have an Inspiron 5558 SE and the monitor started severely flickering a while back. Not just a screen refresh flicker, but a full blacked out flicker as if it is being turned on and off rapidly.
When first opening the computer I will have to move the monitor back and forth, press it down securely, and otherwise attempt a number of things to even attempt to get the flickering stop. This clearly indicates it is a physical issue. (It occurs regardless of windows being booted normally, safe mode, in diagnostics modes, during boot itself, etc. So it is not a driver or other software issue.) Additionally, the cables are not loose. I opened it, and secured them(they didn't seem to be loose to begin with, but I unplugged and replugged them in, and secured with more tape). It fixed nothing.
My only lead left is that the monitor looks like it might be ever so slightly bowed outward, which I am unsure why this would cause this particular symptom so am unsure if it is related..

Hi, all, I have a Dell XPS 15 laptop and recently bought a Asus MB169B external USB monitor.  When I plug the monitor in, the laptop monitor (not the external monitor) flickers about every half second.  If I unplug it, it stops.  I upgraded my video driver to no avail.
Is it simply a power supply issue (the external monitor  does not have a power cord)?  Anything I can do?  It does it even if I have the laptop plugged in and charging.
*something interesting - I just discovered if I duplicate the display and not extend the flickering goes away...but that kind of defeats the point of a dual monitor for me.

A:dell xps 15 monitor flickering after connecting external usb monitor

What is the exact system model?
Have you connected the external monitor to a dock or hub or directly to the system USB port?
Update the BIOS - http://dell.to/1n3X2po - enter the service tag and download the BIOS, update and restart the machine and check.
Reinstall the video drivers and chipset drivers for the system from the above link and check.
Also, please click my DELL-username and write me a private message with the service tag and your Name for case records.

A:Monitor Flickering

This company went broke in 2007 and support is no longer available. I quote directly from this site :

"This monitor did not ship with a driver because it's not required, it's plug and play with Windows XP.
If you're having problems with your monitor display, maybe you need to update your video & graphics adapter driver"

If I were you, I'd take the simpler approach and try another monitor,.. they're quite cheap now and most people have a spare old monitor or two tucked away in their garage.

I had this heavy flickering in my screen, specialy when the back-ground was dark.Than thanks to the people of the forum I fixed it. The problem was the refresh rate wich was put at a lower state. When I switched to the higher one I noticed that there were only two choices : 60 Hertz and 75 Hertz (what I put). My question is: Is there any higher point i can choose for my SAMSUNG SYNCMASTER 940 BW?

A:monitor flickering

Hi Maxtrimi,

Usually at 75 Hertz, the flickering will stop. If a higher refresh rate is available, you may have to increase the resolution to see it as an available option.

Ok, I'm having this problem with an old crt monitor. I know the monitor works, so that's not the problem. It's an old NEC Multisync FE1250 and when I plug it into the VGA port on the side of my computer, all the screen does is flicker. I searched around on google and every thing I found said change the refresh rate. I tried every rate there was 59, 60, 70, 73, 75, and 80, but none of them got rid of the flickering. The flickering is so bad that you can't see anything going on. I've also had this problem with a LED tv that my aunt had.

I have a new win xp home pc with a 4+ year old CRT monitor. As of the last couple days, the monitor will begin flashing unreadably after about 10 minutes of use until I put it in standby mode for a couple minutes. However, it won't stay in standby mode more than 10 minutes or so...I'm running NAV and firewall and something always seems to pop up - I've turned off live update, which gets me up to about 10 minutes. Now that I think back on it, I've heard the monitor turning on and off quite frequently, and am trying to figure out it that's something to do with my flickering/flashing. Any ideas how I can get my monitor back? And what about standby? Can I keep the thing in standby, or do I need to give it up? I currently have it set to go into standby after 15 minutes, although I usually manually put it on when I leave. The monitor worked fine for the first couple weeks of use with this box, and worked fine for the last four years with W2K.

I have 2 monitors conected to my graphics card, a radeon 550
The flashing on and off is the same kind of event as when you first boot up the computer, and after logging on the display disappears for a second before showing the desk top. Thats normal behaviour. What happens to mine is that the display disappears from time to time, then on occasions starts to flicker on and off continuously. Ive checked themonitors and the connections. all fine.
I've checked the display driver etc and everything seems OK. When this happens, the CPU fan starts to go intoi overdrive, and when I've beenable to look at it, the process monitor shows CPU usage of 50-60 %, with no explicable cause.
Ive run Hijack this spybot etc, but cannot find anything untoward.
thanks again for any comments

A:Monitor flickering on and off

Have you checked for overheating since you say the fan goes into overdrive?

Does any particular process show excess cpu use other than System Idle Process?

Going to move you to hardware since this doesn't really sound like an XP software issue.

A few months ago I noticed my monitor began to flicker on and off every once-in-a-while.
As time went by, it got worse (the flicks would be more constant, and sometimes last for longer).
I figure it'd be my monitor (it was 6 years old), so today I finally went out and bought a new one "ViewSonic VA1912w" 19" LCD screen.
I install it, with no problems, up-to-date drivers and all that, and now the monitor flickers for a longer period of time; Like, the screen will flick black for 3-5 seconds at a time..

My computer model is "Q-Tech".
I am using XP Pro, Version 2002, Service Pack 2.
I have 2.41GHZ, with 256MB of RAM.

Does anyone have any suggestions, please?
If you need more information, I will try to provide it; I am so desperate to sort this out - I thought today would be the end of my problems, but it appears just to be worse :(.

Thank you for your time. J.

This is a particularly strange issue. My LCD monitor has begun a strange staticky flickering, where bars of static flicker across the width of the screen (vertically extremely narrow, though) whenever a certain color or something is on the screen, wherever the color is present and all along that span of width. I suspect it is a shade of blue that is doing it- this background on a webcomic reliably causes it when displayed, but the individual background tile doesn't seem to. The effect is very sporadic normally, but having that webcomic maximized, as an example, causes a significant amount of static after a minute or so. I have not yet noticed the problem in games, but then I haven't been paying attention in them.

Hi i am back with another problem. This time around its my monitor. Its been behaving erratically for a while but it just got worse. Earlier it used to flicker as if there is a current flickering problem but that is apparently not the case. While flickering a few black lines start dancing accross the screen and the screen size starts reducing and becoming normal.
Now in addition to the above after flickering a few times the screen goes blank reducing to a single blue line in the center of the screen. I tried switching off the monitor and turn it back on. I even shut down the entire computer but the line would appear even on reboot. The problem stays as long as i dont give the monitor a whack on the side that is when it comes back to normal. I have searched the forums but did not manage to find anything of much relevence.

One more thing earlier i would reattach the connections a bit in case the flickering persisted for too long and it would become ok but start again after about 30 mins

For information i am using a LG Studioworks 552V 15 inch CRT Screen on a ATi Radeon Xpress 200 series graphic card

I have a unbranded 15" flat screen monitor which when my p.c is not being used will start to flicker on and off at various frequencies.
I haven't had this happen when I am actually using my p.c now for example. But if I was to leave it for an hour or so sometime less it will be flickering when I come back to it.
I can still run the p.c but obviously not being able to see very well so it doesn't actually crash. Sometimes if I'm lucky it will cure itself quickly.
Mostly it needs a restart and when it boots up to my desktop it will quite often still be flickering.
At the first screen after a restart I can get into the bios and the screen will be ok it seems it is only whilst the xp pro is running that it cause the fault.
Finally the other factor which may or not be linked is when I shut down \ restart the monitor displays no sync and always has done it didn't seem to cause any problems because at first everything worked ok.

Please any advise would be grateful

Try different drivers. I've there are some wierd issues with some drivers and some cards. For example if I open the nvidia control panel at all after initial setup it screws up video playback, everything becomes really dark and can't easily be fixed by making video adjustments in the control panel, only way to fix is to change drivers.

Are you using LCDs or converting dvi to vga for crts?

My monitor colors are flickering. Every few seconds or so the white flickers and is replaced with a dull yellow color.

Recently I replaced the fan on my video card with a different one. We had to splice the connecting plug onto the new fan from the old fan to make it fit. The new fan was from an older video card.

Could this be the problem? Would I be better off without a fan? Originally the video card had a fan and a heat sink.

Could this problem be from overheating, or a power drain or something from the new fan?

Is my video card dying?

Is this no big deal?

I just recently replaced the motherboard and the hard drive on this system.

A:Monitor Flickering

The problem is unlikely to be related to the fan.

The problem sounds like momentary loss of either one color signal, or that one color is being lost intermittently within the monitor.

The most common cause is a poor connection with the video cable, make sure its fully plugged in each end.

The next most common cause is a poor solder connection -somewhere- in the monitor (also known as a "dry joint"), these are almost impossible to locate as to the naked eye they often look fine.

A gentle (but firm) whack to the side of the monitor case can influence the latter. If that is the case, a new monitor would usually be cheaper than fault-finding.

Posting the monitor make and model would have been a good idea though.
Check the cable first.

I'm not sure if this is software or hardware issue but I had this problem for a long time. Also maybe the title should be screen flickering instead of monitor flickering.

My PCs are always on, 24/7. This last one bought not 6 months ago(monitor is older) has a very weird issue:

1.So, my PC is never turned off, when I'm not using it I just turn off the monitor. So, when I turn the monitor on again and do some action(open a browser, open a new link in the browser) the screen starts rapidly flickering(from black to normal).
Sometimes I can halt this flickering by clicking on the normal part(click on any normal part of the screen). But most of the times I have to hard reset. Or if I' am fast enough reset via ctrl+alt+del and use task manager. Of course I have to hard reset because I can't see anything due to black screen, not because computer is frozen or something.

2.If I turn on the monitor and wait for a few minutes without doing any action whatsoever(just stare at the desktop) flickering will not occur.

3.Flickering never occurs while the monitor runs after initially being turned on, no matter how long it stays turned on.

4.This could be a false correlation but I noticed that if my air conditioning unit(which is positioned right above the monitor) has run for a while and then I turn the monitor on it has a much greater chance off flickering.

5.If I open a new tab in internet browser(firefox) with a middle mouse button the chance of flickering occurr... Read more

Rather than turning the monitor power switch off, I suggest you use Power Options to turn it off after a selectable time delay of no activity. A simple movement of the mouse or any key on the keyboard turns it back on.

I don't know this will make a difference, but its worth a try. See the screen shot

I know that this is not a necessarily Windows 7 issue, but I have no idea what is going on here. I recently bought three LG E2242 monitors for my system, and one of them will inconstantly stay on. I am fairly certain that it is not the monitor as I have switched the monitors to see if that was the case. I think it may have something to do with how I have everything set up. I have the monitors plugged into my Radeon HD 6850 (two using DVI, one using an active Display Port to DVI adapter). The one thing that I thought of was that the signal from the Display Port one the graphics card was not getting enough power, or getting just too little power... but that doesn't really seem that feasible (bear in mind, I am not a computer engineer, so who knows, hopefully someone out there ).

TL : DR -> One of my three monitors flickers on and off, not the monitor or the cable, could be the adapter or the graphics card.

Please any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Hello there Blaze!

Could you possibly try attaching the GPU to another PCI slot? Or is the GPU running on the PCI express slot?

First, I'm sorry If I have posted this in the wrong place

My monitor has recently started flickering. I installed 2 new games recently (C.S.I, and Mall tycoon) I have had no problems with the C.S.I game, however the mall tycoon game, after playing it for a couple hours shut down with a macromedia error, (the screen goes black and it takes a bit for windows to come back, then I get the macromedia error report thingy)
last night when I played it, after it shut itself down I noticed I had a yellow triangle with a "!" on it and it said something about virtual memory being low. I have this game installed in my program files...should it be somewhere else?(the program file shows it is 160.00 mb)
the total size of my hard drive is 38.3gb free space is 22.9gb
I have 256mb ram(I think )

Sounds like the video card could be overheating.

I have just bought a brand new E machines computer. ( I only use it for e-mail) The screen flickers continually, it is not the monitor as I hooked it up to my old one. The refresh rate is preset - 75?, I didn't adjust it should I have to on a new computer?
I have everything exactly where my old system was which was working fine until the memory died. I plan on returning it but I know they are going to argue. So what would the likely problem be? Poor video card?

Things to check

is it plugged in securely to the vid plug on the back of computer

do you have the latest drivers

are the settings correct - one would guess that the factory settings would be correct for the monitor that it came with.

Since it works fine with the old computer, my guess is that it is going to be a minor problem and you should be able to solve it. Do you have a monitor to hook up to the new computer to see if it does it with another monitor. A setting of 75 should be fine if the card supports that refresh rate. You could always lower it to 60 which is a minimal rate to double check it...doc

After recently upgrading my video card to a GeForce6800GT (Overclocked ala BFG) I have started to notice odd flickering problems when any substantial load is put on the card.

The screen runs fine except for random pixels on the screen flickering, but occasionally the entire image will disappear, as if you unplugged the input cable from the screen for a second. It happens enough to be incredibly annoying and is causing some pretty bad eye strain.

I'm thinking that the cause may be due to a lack of power being supplied from the PSU, as it is rated 305W whereas the card is listed as requiring 350 (I know, it's an old prebuilt Dell.) and I'm working on getting a new one. I just wanted some input on other things that could potentially be causing this before plopping down the cash for a new one.

A:Monitor Flickering

As you are outside the recommended PSU ratings already, remember that they will be severely exceeded again with overclocking the card, Power use rises faster than the overclock ratio, as does the heat.

Hi. I have a Sceptre 22" LCD WG Gamer monitor (recently purchased.) Every once and a while (maybe once or twice per day) the screen flickers as if a cord is loose. I double-checked the input and output and the cord is in solidly. Anyone know what this is?

BTW, the monitor uses DVI.

Would it be the same as refreshing the screen?
