I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have the same problem. When turning on the laptop screen goes to white, I can hear windows starting but cannot see anything. I connected it to an external monitor, which will only display once windows has loaded. I then took the whole laptop apart and discovered the LCD cable was frayed due to a faulty laptop hinge. I replaced the cable and it was the same, just white. The problem I think is with the motherboard and the intergrated video card. Upon taking the whole thing apart I noticed that where the video card plugs in is right where the heat sink is and the cooling fan which gets exceptional hot. I figure it has fried the board to the extend the monitor will not work where it is plugged in, but the external monitor will work but only when windows boots. So sad to say because of the the heat this laptop puts off and if you have it sitting on your lap or bed or anywhere else that it cannot cool properly it has over heated and you will have to get a new motherboard.

A:Laptop screen starts up white and stays white

"I connected it to an external monitor, which will only display once windows has loaded"... This is normal behavior because the video signal to the external monitor is not sent until Windows loads. If you can see normal video, the motherboard video chip is good

Computer covers whole screen with either white, or white with black, and blue stripes. Multiple times a day.?
This computer was bought in 2005, (HP Media Center PC). Within the second week this freezing(it freezes, and the screen has a white or white with black and blue stipes) occured( yes second week, my brother was uninformed and thought it was normal and didnt return it. It happened often enough as to save anything you were working on every ten to twenty minutes on a bad day. It settled and slowly became less of a problem, then stoped. One day he got a virus and had to restore the computer, the freezing started up again. same as last time, it settled then stoped, a month later, i recieved this computer as a hand me down, as my brother went to college and got a MAC. That was in mid summer of 2008, a week and a half ago, i got a huge virus, i restored my computer, and the freezing started up again, after not doing it once for over a year. It has gotten as bad as freezing every 30 minutes some nights. And earlier today it froze, i turned off and on my computer, went down stairs, and when i came back it was frozen again. I had not even used and program. Please help if you have any idea whats wrong!
Things to keep in mind...
-It only happened after the computer was restored, or bought(ish)
-Its not a normal freeze where you see the programs on the screen still, the screen goes completely white, or white with black and blue stripes.
-4 years old

A:Screen Freezes and turns white or white with stripes

Then maybe it isn't freezing at all. Maybe there's a problem with your monitor, vga cable, or video card.

Try a different monitor/cable and see if that changes anything. If it doesn't, then try reseating the video card--if any--and if that doesn't work I suggest getting a cheap one from someone's old pc at least to test with.

Installing a new video card can be complicated, but google search for a guide or follow the setup instructions for the video card to the letter and you'll have no problems.

My Hp pavilliin g7 series laptop running windows 7 home starts up with white screen and no beeps or sounds . Started freezing on Hp logo screen last week only sometimes. Id turn off and it would work on second try. About a year and a half ago I used laptop to preview windows 8. And after I reinstalled windows 7 it has been acting funny. Ie freezing and louder fan noise. I did recently update the bios and a pci device driver that never installed. But now it has white screen this morning. I shut off and powered up and still white.
I took off battery and pressed power for 10 sec plugged back in and still white. Still no noise.
Any ideas?

I have read and tried many different suggestions, but I have no idea what is going on. The white on my dad's laptop is showing up with thin aqua vertical stripes in it. I have tried many different things (system restore, updating drivers, etc) and nothing has worked. The only thing that helped a little was when I calibrated it and it made the white in the window look white, but everything on the desktop that was supposed to be white, was not.

Does anyone have any idea what is going on here?

Hi. And thanks for reading this post.
Description: Windows 7 Starter (netbook) loads , desktop is visible for about 30 seconds, then is taken over by a white screen with a submit box on the right bottom portion of the screen. Other than a one-line warning that says "You have 30 seconds to connect to the internet," there are no other messages or directions. I suspect it is some type of flawed ransomware, with an intelligent, very well-hidden code.
From a USB, using command prompt, I've tried several dozen malware scanners including HitmanPro and MalwareBytes without success.
The computer was infected on 11/18/15 and the virus seems to have deleted any previous restore point(s).
The white screen virus locks up Safe Mode and Safe Mode with Networking. The white screen also launches when trying to use explorer.exe or opening up notepad to save a file to the desktop. Tried to use a new user account to bypass the virus, but the white screen locks up the new user account in the same way.
Safe Mode with Command Prompt works.
I am thankful to be here for some professional help and look forward to the learning experience.
I followed Bleeping Computer's directions and uploaded the relevant logs from a recently run Farbar scan.
Thank you in advance for any assistance you can provide.

Hey, I have an Acer Aspire s3 laptop and I appear to have a white screen on loadup after the laptop taking a bit of a bang.

There was no actual impact on the screen itself.

When I opened it up, I could still get a picture but when I moved the screen it would flicker between the good picture and the white screen, with grey lines coming across the screen. I used it for a couple of days or so and then I moved the screen a little bit and that was it - white screen all the time.

The laptop can be used on an external monitor.

Can anyone help me in at least diagnosing the problem? I have a hardware diagnostics software so if anybody knows what I could look out for on there which would give me any clues that would be great.

I am unfortunately a poor student so I would like to exhaust all avenues before I go and pay to get it repaired.

Thanks for your help

I've been given a laptop that my Mum could use while she's stuck in bed .. and that I could use for practice.

The donors get a new one every year, so I hoped it might just need a good clean and updating. They weren't sure but thought that was the case, as they had been using it. I think the battery's gone but it has an adapter.

Now I've started it up, it looks to me like the screen is gone (my non-technical term) - it's white. I think they would have remembered if this had happened for them, which makes me wonder if it could be anything else? (I'm not at all familiar with laptops).

I haven't a manual but I'm not sure about the 'Fn' button, or if the screen could be white if set to an external monitor? I don't suppose I'd be so lucky that this could be a graphics card or something.

I do think it's running otherwise, as I can hear it .. and when it stopped making a noise, I tried typing in the password - after, I heard the familiar jingle, so I knew things were running inside.
I'm disappointed that it looks like something I can't work on .. but thought I'd make sure .. if anyone knows of causes of a white screen, I'd really appreciate the feedback. (hope I'm posting in the right place?) Thank you.

I have built many new computers, and rebuilt many old ones, but never ran into anything like this. I am rebuilding an HP Pavilion g7-1017cl with a 17" screen, that would not boot up at all. What I found, was that the processor and video card were both bad. The only motherboard that I could find for it was, now try and follow this, a g4-1016dx. The place I got it from, told me, that the g4-1016dx was compatible with the Pavilion g7-1017cl laptop. I replaced the old board with the g4, and a new processor chip. I was able to boot the system up. The only thing that isn't working right is the laptop screen. It lights up white, but shows nothing on it at all. To test the video card, I connected an external monitor to the laptop, and it shows the desktop like it should. I replaced the video cable that runs from the motherboard to the screen, but that didn't change it. I even replaced the old screen with a new one, and it does the same thing. Any ides as to why this is happening?

I have a compaq presario laptop, about 2 or 3 yrs old. My screen keeps going completely white w/ small lines shooting across the screen where you can see the regular screen. Whats weird about it is..I don't have to reboot or anything like that..depending on how wide I open up my laptop...it stops. Not that I try to use my laptop w/ it half closed or anything..lol But even when its at a 90 degree angle it goes white and it won't stop until I open it up some more and then it goes away. This has started happening a lot more often now then it used to. Can someone tell me why its doing this?

A:My Laptop Screen Keeps Going White!!

Sounds like the interface cable between the LCD panel in the lid and the motherboard has an broken conductor or two in the area where it passes through the hinge. It only makes cood contact through the break at certain angles of the lid. Depending on the purpose of the voltage or data signal passing through it, it could cause different symptoms such as the ones you mentioned.

Hi folks. I took a Lenova Ultra book from a customer today who told me that their screen had gone white. I just got done taking the hood apart and didnt see any obvious damage to the cabling or anything. I unplugged the screen from the PC and plugged it back in, put everything back together and still the white screen. The laptop is accessible through an HDMI cable and a tv/monitor. So it has to be the LCD right?? or is there a software explanation for this issue. If anyone has ran into this before I would be happy for some input. Thanks

BobbyWat said:

it may be a problem with the LCD itself.

You said that there's no obvious damage to the wiring, but have you checked that they are fully seated under the retention arm? You can try reseating them, and if the problem persists the LCD will need to be replaced.

My computer was working fine the last time I successfully used it, which was about 24hrs ago. Today, I opened the laptop, and when the screen turned on, it was solid white.  Tried CTRL+ALT+DEL, Windows key, etc but computer did not respond.  Had to hold down power button to restart -- screen went straight to white when it turned back on.  Tried to get to Safe Mode by restarting again and pressing F8, no luck.  Tried letting the computer just sit with the white screen, nothing happened. I honestly have no idea what could have caused this.  No error messages, no recent updates or installations, etc.Any suggestions?

I have a Philips Freevent X54 laptop 2gb memory + Nvidia Go 7400 graphics card. It's worked perfectly since I've owned it (2+ yrs). Suddenly this week I am having trouble with the display.

50% of the time it boots to a completly white screen. The rest of the time it displays white or multicoloured vertical line randomly all over the screen and then I get the blue screen of death complaining of a memory error.

I can sometimes boot to safe mode with vga display mode. I have tried updating the display drivers but it made no difference.

If anyone can give me any advice I would be grateful.

A:Freevents X54 Laptop - white screen

Don't connect to the mains, make sure your X54 is shut off and try removing the battery for about 20 seconds then put it back. You may just have a static build up, it happens occasionally, anyway something you could try first. Has worked for me on occasions.

Hi Guys
The other day while using my dads laptop, i closed the screen, and on reopening it, it displayed a blank white screen.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A:Laptop boots to White Screen

Go back in through safe mode, disable Hibernation in your power management settings, and then look for and delete a file called hiberfil.sys.

Restart your laptop and hopefully it will spring back to normal - however you will lose what you were working on as it went into hibernation.

Microsoft have produced a fix for the Hibernation bug somewhere, if you need to use Hibernation that is.

Please try this at your own risk, as you may have to restore/reinstall XP if it doesn't work. Backing up vital data is important.

My HP Pavilion G4 laptop screen is white when I turn it on. When connected to an external monitor, it works fine. Any suggestions for the cause and a solution?

View Solution.

A:Laptop Screen Turns White

If the external monitor is fine, then you know the problem is from the mother board cable connection to the screen itself.  The problem point for notebooks is where the cable goes through the hinge.  You could try to wiggle that to see if the picture changes. The other possibility is that the connection from the cable to the screen has come loose and the final solution I can think of is that the screen itself is bad.

I am faced with this peculiar problem and need help on this.
When I start my Dell 1520 Vostro laptop it will show up white screen on my LCD, no bios loading message etc. and not boot up. I connected an external monitor to my laptop and I was able to see the BIOS loading messages but Vista got corrupted from some reason and hence not booting.
I could understand that OS is gone but what I don't understand why my LCD is white and not showing up BIOS loading messages. Also, I tried restoring the factory default image on the disk but it would still not boot.

Also, a couple of days back I did see some vertical white lines on screen but a restart removed it. so, I kinda ignored it.

Do you think LCD has gone bad? How can I ensure that? I still have warranty on this one, so I could send it back for repair. But, I would prefer doing it myself than spending cycles with support.

thoughts or things I should try?

When I'm on my computer, sometimes it just crashes and turns white or gray. The last time this happened, I had a Bluetooth adapter (ASUS USB-BT211) plugged in from earlier in the day. I unplugged it and the screen immediately turned pitch black, presumably off.

When this happens, I have absolutely no control over my computer. I cant open task manager or Ctrl +alt+delete. I've searched this and so far I've only gotten that its a RAM problem, but I don't think it is in my case. I say this because I have 8GB and I constantly have task manager open and I've never seen over 50% used (except when on a game or using something like a screen recorder, and it has never crashed while doing those things)

The weird thing is.. And this may just be a coincidence, but Youtube has been open every time it has crashed (10+ times). Weather it was just one short song in another tab while doing something else, or just browsing my subscriptions.

I used to bear with it and didn't worry about it too much when it only happened once a month if that. Now its happening weekly and it kind of worries me.

Any help would be appreciated. thanks

A:Vertical white line on the laptop screen

Hey Patrizia,Welcome to the HP Forums! The first steps that you should attempt is to make sure that the vertical white lines do not appear in the BIOS. To do this I have included the steps below.1. Turn off your computer2. Make sure you have connected the power cable3. Turn on your notebook, as it is starting press the  F10 button repeatedlyOnce you are in the BIOS, if the lines are still present, it is likely a hardware failure. The next two steps may resolve the issue. The first one is to do a hard reset. I have included the document 'Performing a Hard Reset or Forced Reset'. The next and final step is to perform a BIOS update. I have included the information here for you 'Updating the BIOS'.Let me know if the issue does not appear in the BIOS.Hope this helps!

My windows 7 professional 32bit on my laptop has a problem. Everytime I turn it on, my laptop screen is white (and fades in some hints of black) and nothing shows up. However, sometimes I am able to get a display on an external monitor.

Before my computer loads my desktop it does a startup repair. What ends up happening is that it does a system restore and my computer is able to boot up normally on my external monitor (laptop screen still white). Once everything loads, my computer automatically looks for and installs a VGA controller driver (at this point I am suspecting something may be wrong with my graphics card because I no longer have the windows aero theme).

Once the VGA drivers are installed, my computer says it has to restart so that changes can be made. After the restart, everything is back to normal with my laptop screen working again and now I have the aero theme again. What is the problem? I've been trying to fix this for weeks. It should be noted that I can't always get the display onto my external so I have to keep on force restarting (holding onto the power button) until I can get it on the external.

I installed a new driver for my graphics card and it hasn't fixed the problem. I know there is a virus on my computer (file is tdx.sys). I am going to replace that file with a new one following some instructions from another forum but I don't want to do that yet because I am currently writing exams and not much of a tech savvy person. Yes Tariq_01. That indicates for the replacement of the display panel. Before that, I suggest you do a hard reset.Shut down the system.Unplug AC adapter, disconnect it from laptopDisconnect all the external peripheral devices attached.Remove the batteryPress and hold POWER button on the laptop for 15-30 seconds.Wait for few minutesConnect batteryPlug in AC adapterPower on.If this doesn't help, only option left is display panel replacement. Contact HP in your region.Hope it resolved your issue, thanks,***PLEASE CLICK "ACCEPT AS SOLUTION" TO HELP OTHERS WITH THE SAME PROBLEM******CLICK KUDOS IF YOU APPRECIATE MY REPLY***

I am using a Compaq Presario V2000 since 2006.
Win XP Home, AMD Sempron 3000+, ATI Radeon Xpress 200M, 1Gb Ram.

Since the last couple months, once in a few weeks, while I am using my computer, my screen turns to what is depicted in the Image file attached here. Earlier it would fix itself in about a minute or two. Or I'd have to move or twist the screen a bit. But recently, the only fix that works is a restart. I can not see anything on the screen and thus use a keyboard shortcut for restart.

From what I have read around, its probably the Inverter (or whatever is the chip behind the screen frame where it says "Compaq") that is troubled and replacing it would fix it. But before I take it to HP and get myself ripped off, I could use some advice.

Thanks a ton and ask if there's any more info that is required.

PS: The picture does not reflect the rainbow colors because the colors are due to the background. During me clicking the picture, there was nothing running I guess.

Since no one has any info here, I'll post what I learn. Might help others.

Since the backlight is working fine, it is not and Inverter or a Backlight Issue.
And I can hook it to a external monitor (when my screen is knocked out) and it works fine. Thus motherboard and video card are fine as well.

That leaves us with the LCD wiring / cable and the Panel in itself.
I have decided to wait for a few days before I take it to a tech because I do not move the panel at all and it seems to be stable for now.

Will update.

First thing to check/replace is the wiring harness that runs between the mainboard and display.  If that doesn't solve the problem, replace the LCD screen.

I have a curious error occurring on an Advent 7006 laptop loaned to me by a friend.

A few days ago it booted just fine and was running well but tonight I fired it up and got a blank white screen with some fine lines vertically. No bootup splash screen, no HDD check - it's just white from the moment the machine comes on.

The laptop shunts around a bit then all HDD activity stops, the screen goes off and it goes through the same thing all over again. Nothing has been installed, updated, modified or hacked about with - it simply decided not to come back up again.

I plugged my monitor into the laptop to ascertain whether it may be screen failure and I get vertical black and white bars. The laptop had been left without power for some days so the battery may be low.

I have googled some, but have found nothing of significant relevance and wondered whether anyone else has encountered this before?

I fear that deep down it may be hardware failure (and in all honesty, being a bloody Advent it's likely to be). Any ideas before I tell the person who loaned it to me????

We have tried all the I think it was and now I need help because Dell will not help. Is there a fix or are we best to junk the beast. Hi guys

I am having a problem deducing the issue with a friend's laptop.

It's a Toshiba Equium U400, not sure the rest of the specs are relevant.

Basically the screen ONLY works if it is angled all the way back. And it works 100% perfectly fine in this position. However, if you try to angle the screen down (in a closing direction), the screen will immediately turn white. You can then tilt the screen backwards again and press FN+F5 (shortcut for alternate display) and it will flash back to life again.

I assume that it is a cable connection issue? And would rule out faulty LCD/inverter if it works at one angle?

I have tried researching this and have only found issues where the screen turns black, not white.

I don't have my screwdrivers with me and cannot open the screen yet to check connections. I am just curious if anyone knows if this behaviour is linked to motherboard, etc.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

The LCD video cable is being pinched by one of the top hinges. It may be permanently damaged and will have to be replaced

Hi folks,

Working on my laptop for about an hour and closed it. Booted it back up 15 minutes later and opened Firefox...all of a sudden the screen started turning white. Ctrl+alt+delete to reboot and the same thing happened in the start screen. Not sure if this is virus or hardware related. Would love some input!
