Unable to Configure / Install Vista Updates

Q: Unable to Configure / Install Vista Updates

I constantlly get error_not_found 0x80070490 when trying to install updates.

The Microsoft website says its a CBS issue and that the resoloution is to run a repair installation of Vista. Thing is the software was pre-installed so i have no disc and i'm unsure how to run a restore without an OS disc and also without wiping everything accidentally.

HP say speak to Microsoft, Microsoft say speak to HP.

Any ideas how i fix this one before the PC flies out the window ?????

Preferred Solution: Unable to Configure / Install Vista Updates

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Windows has automatically downloaded the latest updates. It started installing them and after app. 15 min. when it showed installed only 60% of the first out of three, it gave me the message: windows was unable to install the updates, because they were not configured correctly and it is rewerting changes done. Then it took an other 15 min. to start up windows. This was happening until I did turn off the automatic installation of the updates. When I have checked them, it shows that some are succesfully installed, but app. half not.

Hello all.

My Dell Inspiron 3520 was going quite slow for unknown reasons so I decided to 'refresh' it using Windows advanced start-up setting. Since that time I have been unable to install Windows updates. Well, I can 'install' them, but they won't 'configure'. Once installed and 'configured' 100% I get this error message advising following reboot : "Failure to configure updates. Reverting changes". The laptop then stays paralysed on that screen.

This only started to happen AFTER I "refreshed" my laptop, which was running Windows 8.1 pretty-much problem-free, though a bit slowly, until a week ago. For now I have found a temporary 'fix' by disabling automatic updates; otherwise the laptop is constantly stuck on the "failure to configure updates" error page (because, obviously, it's automatically attempting to install updates). I have done all the standard troubleshooting, including running MS Fix It, Dell Dr ('My Dell' found no hardware issues), MS Malware removal and Mcafee anti-malware. All reported "no issues". I have been in command prompt and found no issues I even tried to 'refresh' the laptop again two more times. I have also spoken to two Windows "technicians" and allowed one of them to remotely access my laptop. He found no issues or "violations".

Obviously, the temporary 'fix' of turning off auto-updates isn't a long term solution, and 'refreshing' the laptop hasn't helped (it actual... Read more

My daughters' Satellite laptop just came back from Comp USA where it had been for some major restorative surgery. None of her previous software made the return trip home....

I had bought her a Netgear wireless card, which we thought that she had lost some time ago...hence the disk was picthed. I found the wireless card...go figure...in a pocket in the heavy duty case I got her on eBay. I inserted the card and Windows kindly offered to reinstall the software, but alas..no disk. I've physically plugged the machine into our LAN and visited Netgear's site where I downloaded (at a paionfully slow pace..unusual as we are on broadband) what I assume is the correct driver. The files I downloaded are zipped, but none of them actually appear to be self-installing.

I have extracted the files but there does not seem to be any way to make any of them do what I need. I can list the filenames/extensions if that would be useful. Sincere thanks to anyone who can find the time to help.

Hello there, I've just built a new computer and am having trouble installing Windows updates on my fresh install.

When I go to Windows Update, I get the following message:

Install new Windows Update software

To check for updates, you must first install an update for Windows Update. Your automatic updating settings will not change

To install the update, Windows update will automatically close and re-open.

When I click 'Install now', the window disappears and I am then confronted with the following message:

Windows could not search for new updates

An error occurred while checking for new updates for your computer.

Error(s) found:
Code 800F081F Windows Update encountered an unknown error.

Does anyone know how I can get updates to work? Is there some way that I can manually download and install this update for Windows Update?

Thank you.

A:Unable to install updates on fresh Windows 7 SP1 install

I'm guessing that your installation media already contained SP1, is that correct? Since this is a clean install my first thought is something happened during the installation process to damage or corrupt some system files. I'd try the Microsoft troubleshooter first.

Troubleshoot problems with installing updates - WindowsUpdate_dt000

If that doesn't work I'd try running the System Update Readiness Tool.

What is the System Update Readiness Tool?

If still no joy, and only because this is a very recent clean install, I'd just reinstall Windows 7 again. If the problem persists I'd start looking into the possibility of a bad installation disk, hardware issues, etc. Please post back if any of this helps or not.

Hi Everyone, Happy New Year !!

My Nephew has asked me to take a look at his laptop it`s a HP G60 with an AMD Athlon Dual Core QL-60 1.90 GHz Processor and 2 GB Ram, 32 bit MS Vista Home Premium with SP2 installed.

He mainly uses it for playing World of Warcraft and his initial request was for me to fix a problem that he was experiencing with that game.

However, on checking out the laptop, I became aware that it wasn`t installing Microsoft Critical updates. It attempts to, but something turns off the Windows Modules Installer when the first update is 12% installed and even though I restart Windows Modules Installer the updates do not continue to install.

I have scanned it with updated versions of AVG Antivirus, SuperAntiSpyWare, Ad-Aware, Spybot and MalwareBytes (all free versions). All have detected nothing.

I will now run HijackThis and would be very grateful if someone could take a look at it please. Just hope it reveals something !

I am running Win 7 Pro and I am no longer receiving update notifications (have undates confingures to notify but let me decide when to install).
When I run check for updates manually I get the window that lists critical, important and recommended updates. I select the updates that I want to install and click OK, but there is no install button - I am returned to the check for updates window?

I have gone to the Microsoft Troubleshoot windows update page and tried the suggested fixes without success and several other suggested fixes posted on Google. All required services related to windows update are set for automatic start. I do get a error when I run Fix OX80070057 - all this does is refer me back to the Troubleshoot Windows Update page. I ran FIXIT which solved nothing.

Can anyone please help, there are critical updates that need to be installed and I would like to have the update app fixed rather than manually install updates manually every couple of weeks.

Hi all!

So here's my problem. I never realized it, but my Windows Updates have been turned off for a while. Like, over a year...

Anyway, I've been dabbling in Korean, and wanted to install the Korean language pack so that I could type Korean characters. That's when I realized there were over 100 updates available.

I selected all the important updates, plus the Korean LP, but in the end, there were some that would not install, including the Korean LP.

I searched around, and other people who had the same problem were directed to download and install the updates manually. All except the Korean, which wasn't listed. I tried all that, and they all failed as well.

As a last resort, I did a full System Restore to the days before the update, and tried again. Still no luck.

They are as follows:
Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB3060716)
Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB3071756)
Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB3097966)

Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB3126593)
Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB3080149)
Korean Language Pack - Windows 7 Service Pack 1 for x64-based Systems (KB2483139)

Every time I shut the computer down, it tries to install them, but fails.
I realize that by not updating for a year, I was taking a risk, so therefore I'm comfortable simply hiding the updates so they don't re-attempt each time. However, ... Read more

I am trying to resolve an issue on my friends PC. Windows XP Home, SP3.
He has suddenly hit a problem where nothing can be installed. The issue relates to msiexec.exe
I have researched this and tried the following;
Re-registering msiexec.exe via the command prompt - didn't work.
Searched Microsoft help and found a newer version of msiexec.exe (v4.5), selected the correct on for Win XP SP3, downloaded, installed & rebooted. Still no joy.

The error was first noticed when Adobe showed that an update was ready to be installed. So when this wouldn't work I then tried Microsoft Update, found a few of these, and they will not install either.
Does anybody know of a solution to overcome this?
I do have a Win XP bootable Install CD, but obviously this will be done if no other solution can be found.

I have been an insider since the beginning (almost) and have never had a problem until now. Each time I attempt to update to the latest build it freezes at 97%. For the latest build, the screen has said 97% for the last 30 minutes so I assume it's once again frozen.

I have a Microsoft Surface Pro 4. I also have BitDefender installed. I have never had a problem updated in the past with my anti-virus running. I tried disabling it with the last build but it also froze at 97%.

I really enjoy testing out the latest builds and want to continue so I really need some advise here.

A few days ago I was running computer maintenance and Windows Updates would not install any of the updates it had downloaded.

With a Windows update error 80246008.

I performed the following:
Clear Cache
Disk Clean up
Error Checking
AVAST scan, no threat found
Malwarebytes scan, no threat found.

I've attempted to use the following tools suggested by Microsoft without success.

When I tried start, Background Intelligent Transfer Service, it failed: Error 1068.
I attempted restarting Winsock- no success
SFC scans reported a javaws.exe unable to start

I tried adwcleaner- no success.

I attempted a system restore, with a message that read it could not perform it with an error: 0xc0000022.

And now a popup with "Windows Explorer has stopped working" appears and now my once non-lagging computer is lagging.

The computer will no longer install downloaded updates for Windows. I found some trojans and they are now quarantined but that did not help. GMER did not seem to extract properly using ALZip but it seemed to try to run. When I hit the .exe file in the GMER folder it said LoadDriver (C:\Documen~1\Owner\Locals~1]Temp\kwpcifoc.sys) error OxC000009A: Cannot create a stable subkey under a volatile parent key.

When I ran it it did not allow me to check anything except Services, Registry, and Files for C: The other boxes that should have been checked were grayed out and would not take a check. So I ran the program and got basically nothing.

I have tried the HP assistant as I am having problems trying to run some programmes such as BBCiplayer. The assistant is absolutely useless and appears to be a money spinner as all it ever tells me is that it can't download HP updates and I must call the tech services, a service I cannot afford. Why is is that this laptop only bought new in June this year will not download HP updates nor run basic Iplayer, it keeps telling me a basic part is missing and then refuses to download the missing programme or stops the installation. Why is this HP laptop unable to download HP updates and why must I pay out extra for a service I should not need if the machine worked as it should.

I have a brand new laptop with Windows 7 Pro factory installed (with SP1) 64 bit system.  However I am unable to download/install Windows updates.
I've tried searching and waiting.  It spins and spins and doesn't find any updates.
I ran a stand-alone app from MS.
I downloaded and ran an update tool fixer.  It found a few issues (which I didn't record) and reported them as fixed.
Any thoughts on how I can get updates on this computer?

Its a know problem created by Microsoft making harder to updated Windows 7 machines...
Follow the guide available here http://wu.krelay.de/en/ or this one http://www.tweaking.com/forums/index.php?topic=4799 that uses a different method.

Seems like this is a common problem, but of course, there could be many reason why the issue is occurring and some of the basic things I've tried are not working.Windows XP Professional SP3 x86It's been probably 3 years since I had my old machine on and decided to virtualize it and get rid of the hardware. First thing I wanted to do is get it fully patched. When I go to download updates (I think there are 100+), it just shows a blank download screen. After 30 min or so, I get an error code: 0x80246008This led me to the BITS service being stopped with an event log error occurring:The Background Intelligent Transfer Service terminated with service-specific error 2147942414 (0x8007000E)When I try and start the service, I get:Windows could not start Background Intelligent Transfer Service . . . error code -2147024882I had an outdated virus software (AVG), so I downloaded Security Essentials and scanned. Found a few adware and removed. However, when I try and update that software, I get error code: 0x80240022I downloaded installed (and it did let me update) Malware Bytes and found more adware etc. Cleaned successfully.Still have the same issues with Windows updates. I'm guessing it has to do the the BITS service not being able to start. Some basic things I've done: turned firewall off temporarily, renamed software distribution folder, ran SP3Fix from Microsoft site to no avail.Any ideas? Thanks in advance - these are always a pain.

Some Windows Updates are not installing properly. During the installation of new updates, a box like this will appear:

If I click cancel, the installation will fail. If I click OK then this window pops up:

I have no idea what may be causing this or when/where it might have originated from. Any ideas on what might be going on here?

Hi, This is a very long story so here goes.
I built my PC
-Intel Pentium D 935 3.2Ghz CPU
-Intel D945GCL Essential Series Motherboard
-2GB (2x1GB) DDR2 kingston valueram
-Jeantech Phong2 ATX case
-HP DVD drive 940i
- I was using Intergrated graphics

Everything was working fine, until i had some CPU over-heating issues, all solved now thanks to this tsg site
then i decided to add my ATI x600 Graphics card
No video was there, so i fixed it by re-installin windows, and only installing the the graphics card driver(not the Intergrated and the ATI x600 Card).
After my re-install of windows as soon as i logged on, my PC would just stop loading everything. In task Manager it said i wasnt even logged on. So i had to wait alot longer then i used to. so i decided to do repair windows XP with the System disc. And then thats where this problem comes in. Because it seems to have wiped out all my system updates and software. i.e IE 7, Windows Media Player 11...

i cant reinstall updates
it says they have all failed

A friend recently gave her desktop to my kids to use. She told me that it may have a virus. I have been trying unsuccessfully to install windows update. I receive error code 80070308. Today, I received a message window saying that there is a .net frame work file missing due to some harmful virus. Debug malware error 895-system 32.exe failure. I also received a message window that said BSOD: Error 333 Registry Failure of operating system-Host:BLUE SCREEN ERROR 0x000000CE. It also included a phone number to contact someone. I called and they basically told me that I had a virus and that for $249 they could help me fix my computer. I am on a fixed income and unable to afford that but having a computer is a very helpful tool for my kids schoolwork. I am unable to include the CBS zip file because it is 15MB.

A:Unable to install window updates

That phone number is part of your infection. It's a scam.
Don't call again and don't send money or let them to remote access your computer.

If this was my computer this is what I would do.

1. Scan with my anti virus program/MSE in my case.

2. Scan with Malwarebytes.

3. Scan with Super Anti Spyware.

4. Scan with AdwCleaner

5. Then finish off with the free Eset Online scan. This one will take some time.

6. After removing all the garbage that was found I would do a
sfc /scannow.

If you need help with any of these just ask for help.

I have been trying for the last week to install Windows Updates KB976932 and KB2653956. I have received error codes 80246007 and 800B0100. For error code 800B0100 it was recommended that I install the system update readiness tool. I tried to install but I was unable to. For error code 80246007 it was recommended that I change or restart the Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS). I am still unable to to install these two updates. Please help.

A:Unable to Install Windows Updates

Just for clarification, is KB976932 the Service Pack 1 for Windows 7? And is KB2653956 the security update pertaining to Remote Code Execution (April 10, 2012)? If yes, the first thing I'd do is run a full anti-malware scan using the free Malwarebytes. If the scan comes back clean I'd run Disk Cleanup to remove any unnecessary "junk" on your rcomputer.

Disk Cleanup - Open and Use

Then I'd run a System File Checker scan from an elevated command prompt (option two, this tutorial.) If any problems are found run the scan 3 times rebooting in between each scan. Damaged or corrupt system files can keep updates from installing.

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

If SFC doesn't show any problems I'd try to install SP1 by itself.

Please post back with the results.

Note I had recently switched my regular anti-virus software from Avast to AVG to Zone Alarm in short succession.

The headline issue is what lead me to begin searching for possible malware problems. I eventually contacted MS tech support and after they took remote control of my computer it was pointed out to me that "a third party was blocking the MS updates, and that my computer was contaminated with malware and at risk, and my network was compromised. I was then informed that they could only resolve my problems for $179/yr, or $79.99 for this one occasion....I declined their offer.

At that point I started downloading and installing (or at least attempting to do so) several different (free) malware removal programs and doing full scans and malware removals. I will submit a list below of the programs I was successful in using and getting scan results with malware (which were supposedly removed), and also the programs that I was unsuccessful with installing. I wondered if the same malware that was blocking the MS updates was also blocking some of the security software installations. In any case, despite some malware removals (trojans mostly) I am still unable to install the MS updates.

I have also done as instructed by the moderator instructions in that I've submitted the HJT and other scan logs for your perusal, but I was unable to Zip them before attaching. I got a "crash" notice from my zip program each time I attempted to zip the fi... Read more

My All-in-One Dell will not install updates, specifically KB2961908, KB2990967, and KB2919355. It just downloads, tries to install, and then uninstalls them. I have run sfc/ scannow, but it states that it could not fix some files. I've run the Windows 8 troubleshooter and it says it fixes the problem, but these updates still don't install. Malwarebytes doesn't find any corrupt files.
A website that I googled said these Windows 8.1 updates should be installed in this order: KB2919442, KB2919355, KB2932046, KB2937592, KB2938439, and KB2934018. KB2919442 is the only one that is installed on my machine. I need some guidance so I can update my desktop.

A:Unable to install Windows 8.1 updates

To fix files that cannot be solved by SFC /Scannow try running:
DISM.exe /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
Sometimes it is necessary to temporarily disable AV/MW in order to install updates, MS even advises it.
Let's try that first.
I would run KB 2919355 first by itself, (check only that) as that is the Win8.1U Update package.
There is a more involved process, lets hope you don't need to do that.

A friends computer kept crashing as soon as he or any member of his family logged in so he asked me to take a look.

It turned out that the thing was running with an out of date McAfee antivirus and was full of viruses and spyware. Something had also disabled the Windows Firewall.

I have now scanned it with an updated version of AVG Antivirus, installed ZoneAlarm, scanned it with an updated Ad-Aware, Spybot and AVG Anti-Spyware but I am sure that there is still some nastys on there because I can download Microsoft Critical updates but when it tries to install them they fail.

The computer is a locally built AMD Athlon 1250mhz Running XP Home Edition with SP2.

Any help would be appreciated

Does it give any errors when trying? I would suspect its just because the site is just so busy lately with SP2 etc, give it a try at different times ...have you tried going to the manufacturers web sites to see if they have updates .......
