I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A:Wake on Ring problem - Fax modem fails to wake PC reliably from standby

I may not be able to help, but I am curious - is this a dedicated telephone line?

If not, what services do you use, like call forward, messaging, call waiting, etc.

Or does the dedicated line have anything like that that you know of? (or didn't know of)

I have a Dell Optiplex 755 with WinXPPro SP3, 2GB RAM and an Intel Core 2 Duo E4600, and it is unreliable for Wake on LAN and Wake on Ring. I also wonder whether my Standby - Sleep - Suspend (S1 or S3) is working correctly.

When the PC is in Standby - Sleep - Suspend mode (S1 or S3), Wake on LAN and Wake on Ring work some of the time but not all of the time, and I'd like them to be 100% reliable.

These may be two different problems, but your advice will be appreciated. (Also, if I should post in a different forum, please advise.)

My Network Card is an Intel 82566DM-2 Gigabit Network Connection, and I recently upgraded its drivers using "generic" PROXP.exe from the Intel website, although this has not helped the problem. The specific driver file e1e5132.sys is now from 2009 -- it used to be from 2007. But, as I say, Wake on LAN from Standby was not and is still not reliable, both before and after the driver update.

In Settings .. Network Connections ... Local Area Connections ... Properties ... Configure ... Power Management, all the Wake on LAN options are checked ON:

- Wake on Directed Packet
- Wake on Magic Packet
- Wake on Magic Packet from Power Off State
- Wake on Link

The NIC card's Diagnostic checks are all OK.

My fax modem card is a Conexant D850 PCI V.92 Modem, and I have the most recent drivers dated 7/27/07, version 7.67.0.50. In Settings ... Phone and Modem Options ... Modems ... Properties, "Allow this device to bring... Read more

More to above: Dell has suggested I must re-install Windows. I've never done that, and I realize I'd probably lose all my applications and data - no good. Seems to me that's like using an atomic bomb to kill a mosquito. And why should I assume that will work?

But is there a way to re-install -- or maybe fix -- Windows that leaves everything else safe?

FYI - About a month or so ago, I ran SFC (System File Checker) in repair mode, and that didn't help with this problem.

Any ideas?

A:can't wake from standby

u have to be a bit more elaborate with your explanation. does the whole system actualy wake up ? can u hear fans spinnin HDD working lights on keyboard/mouse/PC leds? but nothing on the screen?

if thats the issue one other member here i just read about said it was his graphics card drivers..he rolled back one and problem seem to have gone.

with me, i started having that same problem with my older comp. it wouldnt wake fully from standby like mentioned above...screen black. but this only happened after i installed a new PSU. and updated to drivers to my card. then i started to get CMOS errors on startup and couldnt even reset BIOS or anything...5year old Mobo....so i abandoned and build a new machine..

only thing i carried over was my PSU (Antec Earthwatt 500) rest is all new. with XP home sp2. i had this problem once and it was even worse..

my system was attempting to start from standbuy ..(Lights on an everything) but after 6sec or so it would shut down (or go back to stanby) briefly -for 2 secs- then start back up...then off then on again..it kept doing this till i manually reset it....no errors no nothing.

hasnt donne it again since then. but i switched my PSU cause according to PSU calc i need 490W and im at 500max with the Antec. since im going Crossfire ill get a 750w+.

yes, another question on this common topic. i searched the archives, but couldn't find a topic that was exactly like mine/supplied an answer.

i have winxp pro. standby works fine if comp is in standby for a few minutes, but won't wake up after 30 min. or so. no response at all. no h.d., no monitor, etc. i have to shut off and reboot.

all power management settings are set to 'never', except for the "computer sleep" button (which is actually on the keyboard) which is set to 'standby'. in the bios the only power management setting is what to do in the event of power failure: either 'stay off' or 'reboot'. i have had it set to 'stay off'.

so, any ideas why standby won't awaken after extended time?

thanks.

I just added a MS wireless keyboard. Is there a way to wake up the Portege from standby from this keyboard? Now I have to open the lid and use the power button on the notepad. Before, I had settings that put the notepad in standby when I closed the lid. I changed that setting to do nothing when close the lid.

The notepad is set to go to standby after 15 minutes of non-use. This works fine but when I want to use it again I can't find a way to wake it up without opening the lid and using the power button.

OK I sure hope I am posting in the right area. Anyway, I will continue with my problem.

So, a few days ago, my Crucial RAM decides to have issues so I have to replace them (went to NCIX and they exchanged them no problem). Later that day, everything was working fine so I was quite happy. Now a few days ago, I was in Vista 64bit, and the PC automatically went to sleep when I was asleep. However, when I tried to turn it back on, it wouldn't come out of its sleep and I had to restart the PC with a message on the bios saying "Last BOOT failed! Something about POST something lol" So I thought to myself just to load set up defaults. Then I booted into XP no problem. Now yesterday, I had my PC on all night, then I woke up this morning to see that my mouse wasn't making my monitor come out of standby. So I wondered what could be the issue and decided to restart the computer. ALL OF A SUDDEN, I hear this long beeeeeeeeep that didn't stop until I shut down the PC! I almost ripped my hair out at this point. So I tried a few times to boot it, and eventually got it to almost boot to XP except got BSODed with 0x00000044. So I cleared CMOS by removing the battery and doing all that jazz. It seemed to be fine until later when I was in XP, I got the 0x0000007E. So I ran memtest86 and there were no issues. I tested each of my video cards individually, tried removing the sound card, checked all my temperatures... but nothing at all. I ALSO got the message on the bi... Read more

Hello,

Second time posting here. 1st time was successful

The problem I've got now is that my monitor refuses to wake from standby mode anymore. Been running the system 24/7 for long time, in and out of standby, with no trouble, then it started as intermittent issue a couple of months ago and now appears to be perminently unable to wake up. I am forced to cold boot the power button on CPU and restart. I have checked power management settings - tried changing them - and still no go. The CPU will wake fine but the monitor stays in "power saving mode" (amber light on front panel). I've tried deleting the monitor in device manager and restarting but still no luck.

Any ideas? Could this possibly be a video driver issue?

Thanks

To start with, I have already read on this forum dozens of threads and replies dealing with this issue.
My problem is, more or less, the same, but let me give a little bit more detailed picture.

1) At first, my computer wouldn't even go to standby and hibernate (Windows 2000), giving an error message that the driver on the standard keyboard is preventing machine from entering standby.
I've tried so many things, updating the drivers and so on, but nothing helped, until I accidentally bumped into an article listing software which, when installed, could be causing this problem.
In my case, it was Adobe Fonts. The moment I uninstalled it, the machine started going into hibernate and standby without any problems. However, although I haven't had any problems with the hibernate feature, the machine would stubbornly be refusing to awake from standby.
So, at this point, you guys there sweating with updating the drivers over this problem, know that this might have nothing to do with updating the drivers, it could very well be one of the software on your machine, causing it. Unfortunately, I can't find this article anymore. Has anybody else seen it, by any chance?

2) Unfortunately for me, a few days ago I installed an incredibly stupid program for encrypting Emails (PGPfreeware 7.0.3 ) which adds on some absolutely irremovable network drivers, completely preventing the PC from browsing and sending / receiving messages. http://download.com.com/3000-2144-4880518.htm... Hi,

Basically my PC is refusing to wake itself up from hibernation (or standby) as it has done in the past. It seems like the actual task I schedule to run DOES run, but the PC stays in either hibernation or standby mode and doesn't bring itself to life. I've tried searching the Net but I haven't had any luck finding a solution so I thought I'd ask here!

I did have to restore my C: drive from a backup a few weekends ago as I installed Kaspersky AntiVirus and it basically made my PC unusable so I ended up formatting the C: partition and restoring it from my backup (going back to avast! in the process). However everything else seems to be working OK so I don't know why it's refusing to wake itself up! :-(

I'm only doing what I used to - using Scheduled Tasks and ticking the box 'Wake the computer to run this task' - but it's not working. The same tasks run fine while the PC's in 'normal' mode and my laptop has no such problem waking itself from hibernation either.

I really need to get this fixed in the next week as I go away on holiday on Friday and want to use the PC to record programmes while I'm away.

System details as follows:

Hardware: Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 3800+ 2.00 GHz, 2 Gb RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GS, ASUS M2N32-SLI Deluxe ACPI BIOS Revision 0706 (21/08/2006)
Operating system: Windows XP Home SP2

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I'm thoroughly stumped at the moment!

Thanks
Steven

Maybe you could also try to disable hibernation, reboot the computer then reenable it.

I have a WINBOOK TW700 tablet running Win-8.1.  The device supports Connected Standby mode rather than Sleep State S3.  However, the Task Scheduler doesn't wake the device at the appointed time even when the "Wake the PC to run this task"
box is checked.  Since S3 isn't supported, there is no Sleep line-item within the Power Options dialog from which to check "Allow Wake Timers."  So my question is this: Is it possible to configure the device so that a scheduled task can
wake the device from Connected Standby and, if so, how do I do that?  Thanks,

Hi, and thanks in advance for your help! I'm using Windows 7 64 bit.

My computer is several years old, and just a few weeks ago started having a problem waking from standby. Up until now, it had no issues going into and coming out of sleep.

Now, whenever it goes to sleep (whether due to inactivity or putting it to sleep manually), it won't wake up. The lights come on, the fans come on, but the monitor stays in standby. I've looked around online and found that many people get a black screen when booting up, i.e. the monitor comes alive and they may get a mouse cursor, but that's not what's happening to me. I don't get a black screen--my screen is never getting a signal from the computer. I have to do a hard reset, after which I get the 'Start Windows Normally' screen.

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the graphics drivers, changing hybrid sleep settings, using hibernate instead of standby, uninstalling random programs, etc, to no effect. I don't think I had any major windows or driver updates that caused it.

Any ideas??? It's driving me crazy. I'm getting to the point of trying a clean windows install... but what a pain that would be.

Thanks for any help you can offer!

I have a R30208DY Desktop PC running Windows 10 in 64 bit mode with a VGA monitor and an HDMI monitor connected to the motherboard. All was fine until my Intel Graphics driver was updated. After this the VGA monitor failed to wake up after sleep. I spent some time several months ago with assistance of the Intel support forum investigating this. It happens even if I run with the HDMI monitor disconnected. I tried numerous versions of the Intel drivers, but the only version that works after 4300 is 4424. I decided to try periodically to see whether newly released drivers have solved the problem, so have just downloaded the latest drivers from the Intel site and from the Lenovo site and found that they still have this problem. I can reinstate the 4424 driver if it gets inadvertantly updated, but would like to think that someone at Intel recognises that there is a problem and is looking to provide a new version that repairs it. Is there any feedback to Intel from this support forum to initiate this process?

I understood that this is in someway related to S3 issue, but not sure how to get my network back.

Not sure if this is an XP issue or with the chipset/MOBO. I've never encountered a computer that would not wake from standby by pressing a key on the keyboard or moving the mouse.

Anyone know how to get it to do so? SiSoft Sandra says this is an HP VLi8, and that the chipset is an Intel 82443BX/ZX 440BX.

I'm using a PS/2 KB and a PS/2 mouse on it. A USB KB does the same thing...no wakey.

Hey,

If you go into Control Panel > Keyboard > Hardware > Properties > Advanced Power Management, do you have a checkmark next to the box that says "Allow this device to bring the computer out of standby"?

This should be enabled by default, but just in case it isn't....

Otherwise, you could go to the HP website and see if there is a BIOS update or other software patch available that might correct this problem; Could also check their support documentation to see if this problem is discussed.

I know that some older machines do not support ACPI, so that might also be the case...

Long story: Same hardware previous installation of XP suddenly stopped functioning when wife would log in at console, but would function fine via Remote Desktop. Her account was an Administrator account, but the 3rd account created overall after "Administrator" and my own account. If she logged into the console the desktop would function for some random amount of time, typically less than 10 minutes, and then suddenly the display would go into standby and nothing short of a hard reboot would bring it back. If I logged inat the console there was no problem, I could sit using the desktop for hours with no sign of standby.

To resolve the issue I finally resorted to a fresh install of XP SP3 on a new HD. I created teh user account in the same sequence 1. Administraot (Created by default) 2. Me 3. Wife
Now on a fresh install with all post SP3 patches installed, and only drivers from Windows Update the machine is exhibiting the same behavior. Any account I create as an administrator, other than my own, will run at teh console for some short amount of time and then the display goes into unrecoverable standby. Some of the time when this happens it is merely the display being nonresponsive and I am able to log in via Remote Desktop to my account, not her's, and operate normally. Other times it acts as if the entire machine went into standby but the system does not power off all the way, system LED still lit but otherwise no response at console or via network.

Hi everyone,

From last few weeks I'm having this strange and annoying blank screen of death. I could just see a blank screen (not a blue screen) while either waking up computer from sleep or while trying to turn on the display by moving cursor/typing something(waking up from power saver mode of display, I set display to be of after few minutes of inactivity). So essentially screen becomes total blank. Just once or twice I saw this BSOD "DRIVER POWER STATE FAILURE" but for all other times my screen is just blank. Hi, I have an old Time laptop (so getting any drivers/chipsets will be a pain) that I'm using as a Home Theatre PC under my TV. I can wake up from standby with its power button, but not from its keyboard. Also, I can't do this using my Microsoft Wireless Desktop Keyboard, connected via USB (laptop doesn't have any PS2 ports).

I want to be albe to keep the laptop lid closed at all times and placed above my VCR, so having to open it every time I want to wake from standby is not ideal.

I've looked at all the APM properties for m/board and keyb but nothing. The BIOS says nothing about power management either.

Running Win XP SP2

Any suggestions? Thanks.

Hello, I have a Dell Desktop with Windows XP Home Edition, Service Pack 3.

This started about 2 months ago, my set time Automatic Standby was working fine, then it stopped working - computer will go into standby mode if I manually tell it to. Was set to 45 minutes, but then that stopped working, so I tried out a few other times - a few but not every time setting. The only one that seemed to work was 20 minutes but now that has stopped working.

I've read that it may be due to something running in the background, there's a long list of things and processes in the task manager but I'm not savvy enough to identify them or recognize what if any may be the cause. I may have installed a new program around that time, and I did also read a comment from a person with a similar issue who mentions that they installed the latest update for what Microsoft uses against malware and viruses - sorry not sure what it's called. Anyway I kind of remember accepting the update a little before I noticed the standby issue.

I did think about trying System Restore and going back to an earlier date, but it won't let me go beyond January 2011 which it has never done before, don't use it often but in the past it's let me go back to previous months.

I've scanned with Malwarebytes, SUPERAntiSpyware, and Avast, they did not detect anything. Panda ActiveScan did detect something, so I took it over to VirusTotal and 5 out of 43 Antivirus programs are detecting it as som... Read more

A:Automatic StandBy no longer working - Manual Standby does work

My understanding is that when you set a time to stand by or hibernate, if there is any running process on the system that cause the CPU to use 10% even for a split second (like you would observe in Task Manager), the timer gets reset back to zero.

The system has to be "idle" and that also means no keyboard, mouse, email reading, surfing, etc. Idle means idle.

Knowing that, if you have something running in the background like an automatic scan, updates, something that is running that periodically checks for something to do, updates, etc. that could use 10% of the CPU - even for a split second, that will reset your timer.

In my notes, I have this reminder to myself from past experience of things that can interfere with a timed stand by or hibernate:

Does your system have installed Windows Search, Skype, iTunes, MagicJack, RSS feeds, any kind of Instant Messenger, any kind of malware scanners doing scans or doing automatic updates like MSE, AVG, Norton, McAfee, Bit Defender? Did a cat walk on your keyboard?

To test, set your options so some small amount of time - maybe 5 minutes and see if the system works properly every time. Be sure the mecahnism itself is not flawed. If it does work properly every time with a short timer, and you set it back to 45 minutes and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't work you will have to figure out what is going on that resets the timer.

I think I would set it to 45 minutes, note the time of day and find something... Read more

Hi,

I am new here. Hoping someone can help me out with this issue. I work in IT so am not a complete computer bonehead and am at my wits end with this.

My laptop is about 4 years old, it's a toshiba. For whatever reason, it started taking 5+ minutes to wake up from sleeping. If it sleeps for an hour, it's OK.. but if you leave it sleep all night and try to wake it up in the morning, it's quite cranky. After the 5+ minute wake up, it performs as normal. It was running Windows 7 Home 32 bit.

Troubleshooting steps that I have taken are as follows.

Reinstalled windows. Issue was resolved! but after about 2-3 weeks, issue came back. I thought maybe it was some type of windows update, so I reinstalled windows again and paid closer attention to the updates. Issue presented itself again after 2-3 weeks, and there were no updates immediately done prior to it starting.

I started to think maybe it was something related to my hard drive, so i performed laptop surgery and swapped out my original hard drive with a solid slate drive, and installed windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit (this laptop can support 64 bit so I figured why not upgrade.).

issue again was resolved for a few weeks, and now it's back to taking 5+ minutes to wake up again.

If you're turning the laptop on from scratch, it takes 10-15 seconds tops. if you're restarting, it's 10-15 seconds tops (man, I love SSD...)... if you're waking itup within the hour, its 1-2 seconds. But anything longer then that, 5+ minutes.

A:Solved: Dell Inspiron 15 3000 Series - Wake on LAN & Wake on RTC?

Since I did not get an answer here, I went ahead and ordered the machine anyway, and took a chance. It does NOT have either feature in it.

It passed my other tests, so I'm keeping it and the next computer I get will probably have both of those features, but for this one, I guess I'll live without, since the network isn't finished to the point where I could actually use it anyway yet.

It's not clear to me what 'Wake by Thunderbolt' (hereafter WbT) does and whether or not it's required for 'Wake On LAN' (hereafter WOL).  In the T470s and T480s user guides, there's no mention that WbT is required for WOL so I'm thinking it's not.  But then again, since Ethernet is in the dock itself, and seeing how there are controls for PXE, I could see how it might be required. ReferencesT470s User GuideT480s User Guide

I tried using standby mode after reading about it in this forum. My computer is useless after waking up. I can't even close xp pro. I even have to use the computer power button to shut down windows. My harddrive light stays on all the time as well. My browser never opens, and after 5 minutes of waiting, I finally decide to shutdown and it can't. Is there something I need to know in order for standby to work. I have already looked at the bios but see nothing to change. I am afraid to try hybernate. Is this a software or hardware problem?
Life is good without using standby mode.

A:Standby Mode-- Can't Open Applications After Using Standby

Good question: The one and only time I tried THAT function, I had to unplug the computer from the electrical source in order to get the monster to work! I've refused to use it since. Hibernate isn't quite as bad, but I find I always have to do a full shut down to get my computer to work anyway, possibly because I use log-in accounts - I don't know. These days, I either leave it on, or do a full shut down .Orange Blossom

Hi
I have LG FLATRON W2486L monitor, and recently ive been having some issue with it.
I think it may be related to Win7 X86 i am using.
My graphic card is 250GTS with both DVI and HDMI connections
while i used HDMI cable before i am correctly using DVI cable for the very same reason
I opened this topic, hoped it will help but it didnt.
Basically when I turn on my monitor (at the morning for example) it got stuck in a loop
where it goes from Standby to Fully On and back to Standby (while i hear a sound as if i connected and
disconnected a USB device from the computer hub)
Now usually I ignored it as after like 2 jumps it went on
but this morning it got stuck in that loop for like 7 or 8 times before it turned on!!!

Please help?

I have many new Indian friends that say it is not the modem.Need a slow walk through, don't understand this problem. Don't understand computers!!
Could be the problem has another source?

A:XP home -standby does not stay in standby

1. First go to the device manager.

2. In the device manager open a device that uses "Power Management", such as a Network Adapter by clicking the plus sign next to it. - An easy way to access the device manager is to use the key combination "Windows Key + Pause/break", go to the "Hardware" tab and click the device manager.

3. Right-click the child icon that shows up under the Network Adapters category

4. Left-click properties

5. On the top will be a "Power Management" tab

6. Make sure you uncheck the box that says, "Allow this device to bring the computer out of standby".

* There are other devices that use this power management function. One that I know of is Mice, you will have to figure out which it is.

I am an extensive Windows user but this problem has me totally confused. I have done lot of searching on web but cannot find a good answer.

Windows 7 home premium, 64-bit
HP Envy 3D laptop with 8GB memory, no custom hardware

I have configured a backup job which wakes up the laptop at midnight, takes a backup and puts laptop into standby again. All this happens with the laptop lid closed. The power scheme is configured to put laptop into standby when lid is closed.

The resume from standby, backup and suspend after backup is controlled by Windows Home Server (2003) console which is installed on the laptop. I had purchased the HP laptop in October of last year and this job used to work just fine. Sometime in March of this year, the backup stopped working.

After checking the logs and physically observing the laptop at midnight, I found that the laptop resumes from standby at the scheduled time but immediately goes into standby if the lid is closed. The backup fails. Windows event logs indicate that laptop lid close action is putting system into standby.

If the lid is open, then the laptop resumes from standby, stays awake, backup proceeds and laptop goes into standby again.

Here are my problems:
a) Why did the backup work for several months and then stopped working?

b) I have other laptops in the house running Windows 7 home premium on variety of hardware (all HP) and they do not have any issue. Even with the lid closed, they resume from standby, do a back... Read more

try disabling the "put laptop into standby when lid is closed" option in the power settings. If it works properly when the lid is open, then it seems that the problem is with this option. I have ASUS G72.
Logmein software is able to wake the computer up with On Board Wake up is disabled or enabled in BIOS.

I have also Toshiba L505D.
Logmein software can wake the computer up only if Wake up on LAN is enabled in BIOS.

What is the difference between ASUS BIOS's On Board Wake up option and Toshiba BIOS's Wake up on LAN option?

UPDATE: I found out that ASUS's Option was for diskless boot and using network hard disks as hard disks. Nothing to do with Wake up on LAN.

A:Difference Between Wake up on LAN and On Board Wake up on LAN ???

One thing that could make a BIG difference here is the fact one is a PC and the other is notebook. The ATX Form Factor standard for PCs calls for the power supply to deliver +5Vsb standby voltage to various parts of the motherboard, to include the front panel power switch, RAM (for hibernate modes), and various devices (keyboard, mouse, NIC) for such "Wake on...". commands.

A notebook, however, does not have this standby voltage because obviously, it would run down the battery if the charger is not plugged in.

My PC is fairly new and I'm having problems with slow shutdowns/restarts and slow sleep/wakes. Recently it seems to fail waking altogether and restarts after a while instead. Usually during waking I just have a black screen for a long time before the reset/restart but sometimes I see the Windows log-in screen but it's unresponsive.
The problem predates my CPU undervolting and doesn't seem to change when I switch RAM settings back to Auto instead of XMP (I my RAM necessitates some kind of overclock in order to function at its rated speed).

Can anyone advise how to proceed? Thanks.

My main system has Windows7 and I have an HP Proliant Microserver with Windows Home Server 2011 (probably irrelvant) and Wake on LAN hardware. The server is "off" right now, but the LAN activity light is blinking, so the LAN card has retained power (for the W-o-L function).

Do I have all I need to wake the server from my desktop, or do I need to install extra software (to send the "magic packet", to wake the server). If I need 3rd party software, then what is recommended?

I've tinkered with WoL during my professional IT career, but never really had much serious use for it, but now I have systems of my own, I'm more interested in getting it working.

It has been a long time since I played with WoL. You might already have what you need to send that "magic packet", but this little 3rd party tool might be easier to use:
