restore utility advanced mode HELP!!!!

Q: restore utility advanced mode HELP!!!!

want to restore backup files to new windows7 computer. read all the posts. successfully downloaded and installed kbid974674.
can see the external drive (MyBook) with 31gB backup file.
can see the main screen for the Restore Utility
but when doubleclick on the box next to File on the left side, that is supposed to give me a tree of options for which files to restore, it can't find any files.

if I doubleclick on the external drive's 31gB file, back under the external drive, under 'computer', it automatically goes to the Restore Utility Advanced Mode, and again doesn't find any files.

Yes, we were careful to download the version of 974674 that is for 64bit Windows7.

??What do we do now? I don't see why this won't work. Can someone give me some advice regarding what else to do to make the Restore Utility work properly?

Thank you in advance for your help.

I have several items as appointment subjects in my calander; ie "F-B/S = XXX", "B/S = XXX, & Wt. = XXX that are intended as history for past dates. If I do a search for F-B/S =, and if this item is entered for the current date, it is displayed in the search results, however, none of the same items appear for the past dates. I do recall that the first time I performed this search, all items, past & present were displayed, but all subsequent searches have failed to display all the searched for items.

My intent is to print the resultant list as a history for tracking blood sugar and body weight, and other similar items to create a history.

My father made a complete back of his computer before his laptop died and I am trying to restore it for him. The backup, made using Windows Vista Backup and Restore, is stored on an external hard drive.

I am using the Advance Restore option to "restore everything in this backup." However, at the next step, I get an error message saying that the files I am restoring have security permissions for a user account which could not be found on this computer. I am then instructed to create a user account with the same name as the missing account, so that the files will be reassigned to that user account. However, it says that the missing user account is called "deercreeklaptop\kennedy-wilkins" and the space to create the name for a new user account is too short to type all that in, and I'm not sure if it will accept the "\" character either.

Any suggestions on how to proceed - other than restoring the files without reassigning security permissions? Let me know if you need more information. Thanks.

A:Problem with Advanced Restore of backup

deercreeklaptop is the computer name presumably

and kennedy-wilkins is the username, that is all you need to type into the username box

Just download it to your desktop, click on it & you can get into "Safe Mode- Minimal", "Safe Mode-Networking", or "Safe Mode-Directory Services Repair". I've been experimenting with it just for a little while now, but it seems to work as it say's it does. With no spyware, adware, etc...

So sometime last night, I was up trying to find a program of some kind. Eventually I had realized what I downloaded was not the correct file and was likely from a shady site. Shortly after I was having some issue and I kept getting Windows antivirus notifications. I went to my typical route to try to fix this issue, but I was unsuccessful. I usually try to go straight to System Restore but whenever I clicked the box for it nothing would come up. So, then I tried to go to my second line of defense, booting into the advanced options center with all the option like safe mode, etc. to access system recovery from there. However, I am having trouble getting my PC to actually get there. I first tried the hold shift while press power then restart way, and then i tried doing the advanced startup through the settings. Neither of these ways worked, and I am still having trouble with the problems, also noticing some weird new program using a lot of disk, called zactevdsvc.exe that seemed to be intruded into my system32 folder. I did a full virus check over night and deleted a bunch of trojans, which helped but something keeps injecting them and really, I just want to be able to get to the system restore or to the advanced options startup so I can fix the issue myself. Is there some other method I can do to get there since these are not working, like command prompt, or some way to force it during boot?

A:Can't get to System Restore or Advanced options boot.

Right click the Taskbar and start the Task Manager. Click the drop down arrow for More Details. If you see zactevdsvc.exe running press End Task.
Press the Win key+S to start Search and type appwiz.cpl and press enter. In Program and Features, uninstall any new software you are not aware of.
You can start System Restore from the Command Prompt
You can boot into Safe Mode via msconfig
As for the malware, download ADWCleaner Scan/Clean. then Download Malwarebytes Scan/Quarantine. Good luck.

CREATE clean restore DISK - [ advanced.] { please move if this is the wrong forum, Im

Hi,

I've wanted to do this for a long time. I am intermediate to advanced level, on pc.

I am currently using a TOSHIBA satellite, laptop, with xp , no service packs. I am considering upgrading to a HP laptop, with windows 7. But i don't want all their junk installed.

{ I know of no way to buy a laptop without the junk }

I want to create a restore disk , dvd. { the TOSHIBA uses 2 dvd's } that can restore the OS without ANY JUNK software attached. Yes, I know you can delete those programs, but it takes forever and creates a mess!

The current dvd restore disks are older and dont have sp2 on them. so I would add sp 2 to a custom disk, also, it there is a way. { why not xp sp3 ? I found it
runs worse than sp2, for me }

Also, I want to repeat the process for the new windows 7 laptop.
What is the best way to do this please?

Or should I create a junk free version by removing all programs , then copying to another partition?

I would like this copying partition method, as a second way to restore the clean Junk free OS, without having to reformat and use recovery disks.

I would be willing to buy bootit ng, or what partitioning software ?, to do this.

Or is it better, to just install A NEW HARDDRIVE to the laptop to do this? How?

{ I did buy a new, bigger harddrive for the toshiba, but haven't tried to install it yet. Not really sure how }

Hi!
I recently had to reformat my computer due to some sort of malware (I think) that I could never get completely fixed. Before doing so I backed up my software with the Windows Backup that came with my XP Home to an external hard drive. After reformatting, I connected the hard drive and found the file. It was 33+ gigs, just like it was supposed to be. But when I clicked on the file and then chose "restore," the utility told me there was no file there. I'd doublechecked just before reformatting, and the file worked fine, so I have no idea what the problem is. Can anyone help? I desperately need that info!
Thanks!

I want to backup my PC's data files to an external HD using W7 backup & restore utility.

If I use the recommended default option that also includes a back mirror of W7 will the PC automatically backup only new data since the backup at the scheduled option chosen??

Will the backed up files on the backup drive appear as windows file folders (My Pictures, My Documents etc.) or be in an encoded file format?

Thanks for your help

A:Questions re W7 backup & restore utility

Hello Provlima,

The Windows Backup on a schedule will only create incremental backups of the folders you have included in the backup at the scheduled time and date if changes have been made to the files since the last scheduled backup.

The system image will be a new full system image each time the schedule runs. If you run out of HDD space, then the oldest system image will automatically be deleted to make room for the new one.

Hope this helps,

hi every1, a friend of mine recently had a virus which basically rendered her computer unusable. windows would start, backround of desktop would appear but thats as far as it would go, no icons, taskbar, etc. the only way around was doing a system restore in safe mode. windows is fine now, no viruses and running good. she also backups up the 'c' drive to an external drive 'f' using xp's backup utility. the problem is when we went to restore some of the files, the restore failed saying it could not find the backup file to restore from. when you start the backup utility, all the backup files are there, you can open them and see all the folders inside each file, but when it tries to restore from that backup file it says it cant find it. did the system restore wipe something out??? the system restore was done using a 3/11/2011 date. the backup we're trying was done 1/20/2011. is there anyway to fix this?

From reading other forums on here, I recently learned to never use a tool to clean the registry. I have never used one, but never knew not to use one. The advanced mode of revo uninstaller does clean the registry. The only forum I could find on this situation was this one:
http://forums.techguy.org/all-other-software/916641-revo-uninstaller-question.html

In that forum, nobody was against using the advanced feature, they actually encouraged it, even though you are never supposed to clean the registry? That's why I'm confused. Basically, my question is what is the difference between using revo's advanced mode to clean the registry compared to other programs that clean the registry?

In one topic I asked how to Overclock. I learned it , and know more about it.
But now my problems is my BIOS. I dont know how to use it. That isnt classic....
I dont have to edit time or HDD slave, not to do anything harder !

My BIOS is same as http://images.anandtech.com/doci/4499/ASUS%20BIOS%201%20-%20EZ%20Main.png

My motherboard is ASUS P8H61-M LX2 and it have latest ASUS BIOS (EFI BIOS Utility- EZ mode , I attached one link here to see).

My questions are :
1. Can I back normal BIOS like one old ?
2. How to use that ? Is there any tutorial for this ?

That is all for now.
Thanks in advance.

I need to discuss this idea with several of the top Win XP Pro experts to determine if it is possible. If possible, write a step by step procedure

My idea is to maintain a set of up-to-date backups Full & Incremental using XP backup utility saved to a USB Hard Drive. Then if the consultants Lap-Top?s Hard Drive that runs the OS fails!

Rough Draft:
Install new HD in computer.
Boot from a customized bootable CD.
Format new HD (NTSF or FAt32)
CD should load:
Win boot, XP restore utility & USB drivers
Restore full & incremental backup files from all available backups

There are a couple of different options here. If you want a fairly up to date back up with most of your data, programs, etc. then look at this material laid out by Fred Langa (www.langa.com) http://www.langa.com/backups/backups(1).htmIf you just want to be able to reinstall windows with most of the updates in place, you can create a windows xp sp 2 disk by slip streaming, look at this sitehttp://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windo..._slipstream.aspMuch of what you are suggesting is present in windows xp. But you can add various utilities to the xp sp 2 disk.

Every time I try to boot into safe mode or advanced options I get the same BSOD ERROR: CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED.. Is there any other way for me to accomplish this?

A:I can't boot into safe mode or advanced options because of bsod

Crash dumps are not very helpful for stop 0xEF, because they does not contain the necessary data.
ETW minidump data unavailable
EXCEPTION_CODE: (NTSTATUS) 0x111d6080 - <Unable to get error code text>
ERROR_CODE: (NTSTATUS) 0x111d6080 - <Unable to get error code text> So BSOD analysis will not be very effective here.

And, it is a laptop. We will not be able to open it, test the hardware components and replace those.

If it does not boot in safe mode too, then there is almost no options in hand. Plus, it gives a hint of a hardware level error, as most of the drivers are inactive in safe mode.

I would suggest you to take the laptop to a Lenovo Service Center. If it is within a warranty, explore it.

I'm working on a computer that was infected with the Advanced Virus Removal Virus. I have returned the laptop to a working state, with all virus related processes removed and all registry settings seemingly put back to their original settings. One problem remains though, when I try to boot into Safe Mode the computer gives a very brief (text not visible) blue screen and reboots after the driver "mup.sys" loads. There is no problem booting into Windows XP under normal configuration. Does anyone have any idea, or has anyone seen this problem as a relation to the "Advanced Virus Removal"?

This is a very unique problem, apparently. I'm working on recovering a machine from a month-long period of time during which it was completely overrun with spyware and virues.

Some of the other problems that I've managed to solve include:
*(windows Explorer)>Tools>Folder Options>View was totally blank...no check boxes at all.
*Start>Program Files was unresponsive...only access to programs was via desktop shortcut, or Windows Explorer.
*Disappearance of the Recycle Bin or a corresponding _RESTORE folder.

Currently, I have the following issues to contend with:
*System Restore can only be activated or deactivated via direct registry edit. When you try from the System Properties window, it simply tells you that an error occurred and to try a restart.
*The advanced start menu options are blank. There are no options to turn off or on things like "Show Network Connections." The options can be turned on in the registry, but the options are missing altogether from the 'rt-click-on-the-start-button' process.
*Any instance of IE that is open shows in the taskbar as "Windows Explorer," rather than Internet Explorer.

I've got the spyware and virus problem eliminated, but repairing the damage left in the wake has overwhelmed me at this point. These are things I haven't run into in the past, and when searching "advanced start menu options missing," you can imagine the kinds of results that I get: all how-to's o... Read more

A:Have question about using Windows 7 image restore/backup utility

I'd certainly think you could do that. That's what it's for.

But:

Windows Backup and Restore isn't foolproof and may not work in any given instance.

It's a bit cranky---you have to know how to operate it and that isn't always clear.

Lastly--if you like Professional, I don't see why you wouldn't like Ultimate. They differ only in a few features. If you don't like the additional features, ignore them. Likewise, if you have no use for the additional features, why bother upgrading?

I closed the lid last night and it went to sleep but pushing any key did not seem to wake it up. I hit the power button and it did. Is this normal? I searched a bit and found one site that said that can be the protocol on some laptops.

I installed Java last night--because my father may need it for a certain website--and after I did I experienced a recurring bogus Java update pop-up when I visited the NYTimes using IE11 which I had not just before without Java being installed. (Interestingly I did not experience this pop-up using Chrome which I installed for this lapstop.) Malwarebytes showed nothing and I cleaned the system using Advanced SystemCare which is on this Notebook, although I have no idea if it cleaned the pop-up problem. I then visited the NYTimes again and the pop-up was gone. Any idea what this was (a drive by maybe they call it?) and why Chrome was not incurring this issue?

Lastly, and as I just referred to, my father installed Advance SystemCare 7 on this Notebook on the advice of a friend who seems to know a thing or two about computers. Do you know anyrthing about this anti-virus/cleaner? I searched it and there doesn't seem to be much on it.

Thanks as always,

VFN

But the problem is, when i go to hit F8 or shift F11, the computer just beeps at me and nothing happens. i have tried without the battery and holding the power button for 30 sec. I am hoping someone has found a solution to the following:- I have a W540 in a ultradock docking station with three external monitors and I have advanced mode on dock enabled to utilise the NVIDIA graphics however on boot the bios screen is not shown on any of the external monitors. As I have a bios password then as it does not display the prompt on the external monitors then I need to guess if it is asking for the password or not. It is a minor irritation especially if an error message or something stops the boot. From the following article I can solve the issue by using standard video mode but I wish to use the advanced mode. https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-P-and-W-Series-Mobile/W540-BOOT-Screen-Display-on-external-mon... The following are my display settings in the bios:- Boot Display Device         [Display on dock]total graphics memory     [512MB]Video mode on Dock        [Advanced]Discrete GFX Perf Mode   [High Performance]Boot Time Extension        [Disabled]   - I have tried setting this to the maximum but no joy I have updated the firmware of the bios and the dock but to no avail - any suggestions on how to show the bios on the external monitors with advanced mode enabled?

A:What's sample rate/bit depth/shared mode under advanced options?

16 bit, 44.1Khz is the industry standard "CD" quality and what is on all commercial audio CD's. I have a recording studio and record in 24 bit 44.1Khz (24 bit gives me some leeway with internal recording software and effects) but when I do a final mixdown its mixed to 16 bit 44.1Khz stereo.

48Khz is used for video so it will properly synchronize with the video frames per second. I don't know what DVD audio is on a commercial DVD.

Dolby is an audio enhancement additon, some use this and some do not. Many movie DVD's have Dolby.

Do you have the latest drivers and support software for the SoundBlaster? First step, make sure you have the latest software.

Hi there,

I have turned on the desktop mode in the dell battery utility which holds the battery charge at around 50% to 80% level. However, after resetting the system I lost this software and somehow the desktop mode is still on and I have no way to turn it off (so I can't charge my battery to full).
I guess if I could reinstall Desktop Battery Utility this would be solved, but I couldn't find it anyway (not even on the drivers/apps support page). Is there anyone who knows where I can download the software for Alienware 13 or other ways to turn off the desktop mode?

Cheers

I bought some new Seagate hard drives that happened to have this feature . . . but I wasn't reading the fine print when I bought them.

"Seagate SmartAlign™ technology1 provides a transition to 4K sectors without the need for software utilities"

When restoring Windows 7 disk images to these drives from a disk image that is fully setup for our business, the resulting installation would get flagged as Not Genuine Windows. We were just changing drives, not the computers so the installations were still Activated, but they were no longer Genuine. We tried activating with a new unused key and it would still be flagged as Not Genuine.

MGADiage.exe would report a list of about 10 altered files on the restored drives.

Finally I tried an in-place upgrade with Windows 7 SP1 Pro media to fix the problem while saving the drive setup. Toward the end of the installaton, the pop-up "Windows Setup could not configure Windows to run on this computer's hardware" and setup quite and ran a Rollback, undoing the upgrade process. I did this twice after restoring two different images to the computer.

The message above led me to the "Advanced 4kb Formatting of the drives as the probable source of the problem.

I tried a clean install of Windows 7 on the same Lenovo T500 with the new drive and that works fine, but it would take a couple of days and some licensing hassles with other applications to do a completely new install instead of using the image. (rememb... Read more

Appreciate any help anyone can give me here.

Turned off my PC this afternoon, with no problems that I was aware of. Turned it back on when I got home tonight. System hangs with a blank screen during normal boot. Power off and try f8 to go into safe mode - and now all of a suddon f8 brings up a boot menu with my dvd and dvd rw-drives and my hard drive, and not the advanced boot options it always did before. Cant get to safe mode, can't get to a system restore option or a command prompt or anything.

Now I'm getting a bit worried, and figure I'll break out my recovery disk. I have a cyberpower, inc. recovery dvd-rom that came with the pc - but no matter which of my drives I put it into (dvd rom or dvd-rw) and no matter which drive I boot from, the system goes to a black screen and just hangs.

I can press delete when the PC starts to enter setup, but thats my bios and there doesnt seem to be anything I can do there. f8 gets me to this dumb boot menu instead of advanced boot options (is this some kind of crazy virusb, or I am just going insane here?). No idea what to do now. Please help!

A:Vista 64 home - advanced boot menu gone, can't restore from recovery disk

Hello kad153,
When you get to the boot menu, high light the HDD your OS is on and press enter, that should bring up the options you are looking for, choose "Last Known Good Configuration".

If it still wont start follow this tutorial.

Create a Recovery Disc

Then this tutorial.

Startup Repair

Hope this helps, good luck and post your results.

i have an ASUS piece of garbage thats not even a year old - model X751N - that opened up today with a series of start-up errors. one was "Inaccessible Boot Device" and it tried repairing itself multiple times. then it opened up automatically in ASUS Bios Utility which i couldnt get out of. i looked online and found a way to get around it, but my overall question is, when im getting these errors and auto-repairing and bios utility...is this generally a sign that the laptop is a goner? i dont think i can trust this unit anymore. its running windows 10 if you need to know.

My system is showing an internal hard drive error and F8 advanced boot options page doesn't appear to exist anymore (lost recovery via F8). That limits my troubleshooting.

The system is a Dell Inspiron 560 desktop with core 2 quad Q8300 CPU at 2.5 ghz. 6.144 GB of RAM with DDR3 SDRAM. It's 3 years old with Windows 7 Home Premium. The computer is basically used only for surfing the web and has 98% of the RAM free. When the system was purchased 3 years ago it came with no recovery disks or any b/u software. I'm not really worried about losing the data on it as other than the Windows Operating system, there's not much that couldn't be resurrected from the web. This chain of events started 2 weeks ago when I received a windows "Boot Configuration data file is missing required info error." A system restore solved most of that issue and allowed access to Windows but I was still left with numerous script errors that locked me out of some frequently used web sites/pages. At that point I followed an on-line solution to properly repartition the boot config. Upon doing that and restarting, I lost the system Boot Manager and could not start the computer at all ("no boot device available"). I had hosed myself as no doubt my tinkering in the boot config mode wiped out the needed boot management for a proper reboot.

At that point I took it to a local repair tech who brought the computer back to factory condition, fixed the boot config, reloaded all software, updated ... Read more

A:SMART disk drive error-can't access Advanced Boot Options repair mode

While trying to load a HD sentinel from CNET I picked up a malware/spyware search engine called "Sweetpacks" that has become my new default search engine! It won't go away by selecting a new default browser either. A search of the forum for this bug suggests loading a particular cleaner program. Tried that and the links are no longer any good.

Decided to do a system restore back to early this morning when I first loaded the Mozy "free" backup program. That got rid of the Sweetpacks malware/search engine as well. One less problem. But now I'm afraid to load any HDD sentinel from the internet.

Note that I never received a system recovery disk with this Dell system package. So running a recovery CD is not an option for me.

Hi there,
My sister just bought a new desktop. It was working fine and all. But this morning, she forced shut down a windows update. The next thing happen once it gets past through BIOS is
"Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key"
So I told her to look at the BIOS setting and it only recognise the Optical Disc Drive of
"SATA SM: TSSTcorp CDDVD SH-2"
as shown in the picture below

Is there anything I can do? I tried opening the desktop case and see everything is loose, but everything was still in tact.
Any suggestion would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

A:Hard Disk Drive not found in ASUS UEFI BIOS Utility - EZ Mode

Try reinstalling the driver, changing cables. If it can't be recognized then boot the maker's diagnostics DOS CD scan to test it - Seatools if there isn't one - or Partition Wizard bootable CD surface scan. If these won't see it you can slave it to another PC to try Disk Check or see if it will see it. If not then I'd replace it.

Do a Clean Reinstall on the replacement drive from tutorial in my signature below if you want it perfect.
