Q: Solved: Either there is no default mail client or the current mail client cannot fulf

At our company we use Lotus Notes for email. There is currently one user who is trying to use the option within MS Office to send the document to someone via email, but when she clicks the option to mail as PDF, she gets the error message "Either there is no default mail client or the current mail client cannot fulfill the messaging request. Please run Microsoft Outlook and set it as the default mail client."

Things we have tried (in no particular order):
- uninstall & reinstall Lotus Notes 8.5.3
- modify the installation of MS Office 2007 Pro
- removed Outlook
- reinstalled Outlook
- using "Default Programs" set Lotus as the default mail client

None of these changed what happens. At this time, the user is saving the file as PDF to the desktop, then attaching it to an email.

System settings: Windows 7 Pro w/ SP1 (64 bit), MS Office 2007 Pro w/ SP3, Lotus Notes 8.5.3

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your time.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I am running Windows XP Pro SP3. I have IE8 installed. Every time I open Outlook Express, I am informed that it is not my default mail client. I have no other mail clients, so this confuses me. The Mail link on my start menu opens my internet options (for IE) as if I opened the Internet Options on the Control Panel.

I click 'yes' (to make OE default) and leave the tick box marked to check every time, and every time I get this pop up box. Any suggestions?

EDIT: Discovered that Internet Explorer does not have Outlook Express set as the default client for email, and nothing shows up in the drop down box for Email in internet options.

EDIT 2: Problem solved. Had to re register Outlook Express as an Email client with /reg.

Hi to all! I am new here. We just got a new desktop computer with OS window 7. I was able to set yahoo as my homepage and able to access to my email and installed yahoo messenger. My problem is everytime I click "read mail" it says that it cannot perform operation because the default mail client is not properly installed. So I went to my control panel - internet options - programs to change my default email but there is no way I can choose yahoo mail as default email. I tried it many times and still trying to figure how to set my yahoo mail.

Also, every time I click the hyperlink email it says that "There is no program associated to perform the requested action. Please install an email program or if one is already installed, create an association in the default programs control panel". So I tried to make changes of my default programs but no yahoo mail.

Is there anybody here with similar case with me? Hope you can help.
Thanks everyone!

For reasons that are far beyond me, Outlook cannot seem to be configured to receive/send messages from my gmail account. I have put in the correct information but it just doesn't work. I installed and then uninstalled outlook 97. After it was removed I tried making gmail my default mail client following their instructions. I now get the error message

"Could not perform this operation because the default mail client is not properly installed."

I tried going to internet options and choosing a new email service but that space is blank and there are no choices in the drop down menu and one cannot type one in.

I also ran regedit. I was able to get to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes\
but could not find HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes\mailto

I would like to be able to use gmail as my default mail client. If anyone can help that would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

You need to open a web page and go to gmail.com in order to see your emails unless you are using Outlook, Outlook Express, or Windows Mail, etc.

Hot mail or Yahoo cannot be your client. You can download a client, such as Windows Live Mail and set it up to receive Hot Mail, if Hotmail allows POP3 or IMAP.

The client is not an email provider, it is a simple way to download the email to your hard drive, so it can be read off line.

When you click on links starts with "mailto", windows try to open an associated program for that like "Outlook" .
If you have not any Windows Base Email Client Software installed such as "outlook" you may got this error.
If you want to send email from a Web-Base Email Server, simply copy the Email-Addrress you clicked on before and paste it when ever you want. Just do not click on that.

Hello everyone. I've come here looking for help with a computer problem. I'm pretty computer literate, but this one has me stumped.About a week and a half ago, I started getting an annoying message box upon computer startup (I'm running XP Pro), and sometimes once or twice more a few minutes later, that says the following:"Either there is no default mail client or the current mail client cannot fulfill the message request. Please run Microsoft Outlook and set it as the default mail client."This makes me suspect something is trying to send emails without my knowledge, especially since I use Thunderbird as my email client. The more troubling symptoms are the fact that my computer runs very slow (multitasking is pretty much impossible) and it completely freezes up occasionally, requiring a reboot, usually when I am playing back a media file. I've scanned my system with about six different anti-malware utils, and they've all come back clean. I don't think it's a hardware issue, since the problem doesn't seem to show up when I boot up in safe mode, but I've run memtest and a HDD analyzer just in case and found nothing out of the ordinary. I've done a system restore to before the problem showed up, and that hasn't helped. The only thing I can think to do now is to reinstall the OS, unless anyone here has any insight or advice. I have run HijackThis and attached the log below. Thanks in advance to anyone who reads this...Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2Scan saved a... Read more

Windows 7 doesn't include an email client. You have to install one of your own choice.
If you install only one, you don't have to set it as the default. Your error indicates that you haven't installed one, or the installation is faulty and it needs to be re-installed.

in the options portion of Outlook, you should be able to find a box that says something like "Always check to see if Outlook is my default mail client". Find this and make sure it is clicked "yes". Close down Outlook and then reopen it. If it is no longer your default, it will ask you if you want to make it your default. Say yes and then try that website again.

i had reset the MSMAPI32.dll after the change so that the new settings would apply to the newly installed outlook 2003 rather than using the files from Outlook 2007. In other words, i uninstalled outlook 2007 for 2003....but i think that there are still some system files that have caused this........???...any help would be appreciated.

Forgive me choose wrong threads, but had to.
We actually have Windows 2008R2 installed with Lotus Notes client, and NO other email client installed.
Each time user click a mail link on web page, it will launch the Lotus Notes.
I want to disable such default email client link AT ALL. That means NO action will triggered when clicking "mail link" in webpage or other application, or simply pop-up with like "what app to open such file....".
Of course when users DO click "Lotus Notes" from main menu or desktop icon, it should work as expected.
In general speaking, we have a "mail client" installed, but we dont want it as "default mail client". I was trying to find any regkey to disable. All web forums talk about "how to change to different default mail client". But
I want to disable such default pointing AT ALL.

If I start Outlook Express (not my usual e-mail client) and open Tools/Options/General, the default messaging programs for mail and news are both NOT Outlook Express. If I click the Make Default buttons, close the dialog and immediately open it again, the two options are back to NOT default.

I usually use Thunderbird to read e-mail. Every time I open this, it tells me it isn't the default e-mail client. If I click "yes" and check "don't ask again", it forgets the answers and asks exactly the same next time.

I've tried everything I can think of including running RegClean, but nothing has any effect. I've looked all over and can't see that anyone else has had a similar problem.

There is no problem with the default browser -- it's Firefox and if I change it, it remembers when I change it back again.

All suggestions welcome...
Thanks, Mike Wilson

Hello samiam00

I don't see any other options for other programs indeed.
However, I've made a registry file that creates some keys in the registry.

After importing, you can see MAILTO protocol in explorer file assosiations under "protocols" and when you select it as default, I've made the registry keys to open yahoo webmail..

It's not an M$ or other known tweak , its mine, so I hope it might help you.

I have attached the .reg file.

1. You don't set up an e-mail client. You choose one to install.
Windows 7 does not have a built-in e-mail client.
So, which e-mail client have you chosen ?
Such as Windows Live Mail, Thunderbird, Microsoft Outlook ....etc.

2. Comcast is an ISP ( internet service provider ).
Is comcast the one who connected you to the internet ?
If yes, you need the following from comcast :

E-mail address
Password
Username
Incoming server name ..... it should be .... mail.comcast.net
Outgoing server name ..... it should be .... smtp.comcast.net

so, tell us ...
1. which is your e-mail client
2. confirm to us that you are using comcast as your ISP,
then I can show you how to setup an e-mail account.
