How to reset your ASUS BIOS UEFI password easily

Q: How to reset your ASUS BIOS UEFI password easily

Yes, you can reset your ASUS Bios or UEFI password if you forgot it. (works on UEFI based laptops at least... don't know if it will work on everything)

This only works if you can boot into windows (or other OS) ! It will reset you BIOS or UEFI password if you have forgotten it.

- Boot into windows and change the date to 2002/01/02,

- Reboot while while hitting F2 to get into the BIOS / UEFI, when the enter password window appears hit "Alt + r", a "Enter rescue password" window will appear, with 2002/01/02 date showing (if not the code won't work), enter the following rescue password : ALAA4ABA

- Done ! You're in the BIOS / UEFI

- Change back the date and other settings to their correct values in the BIOS / UEFI, save settings, and you're good.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I tried to boot it, but it always takes my to bios. Tried disabling secure mode, enabling csm. Maybe someone had this problem and knows how to fix it or has some suggestion, because i really dont want to reinstall my windows and lose all my files. Thanks in advance

First of all, if those files are important to you, you make backups.
Next no one [other than you] has any idea what hardware you are running. Post ALL of your exact system specs; ie exact motherboard, exact video card, exact pw supply, etc, etc. Do not post 16gig of ram; post the exact brand and model# of the ram. Do that for ALL of your parts.

I don't know if anyone has tried to contact ASUS support but impossible. FWIW sorry I went with this ASUS board but from reading ASUS now makes about 80 percent of all boards. Hope we can get some competition from the good ole USA and show them how its done.

In discussion with American Megatrends today, found out they sell their base BIOS to MOBO manufacturers and then the BIOS manufacturers modify it to their liking. IMHO, who modified this BIOS for ASUS must of had a nightmare the night before.

I found two numbers for this BIOS.
I "think" they relate to each company as follows:
-- ASUS ver 2202
-- American Megatrends ver. 2.16.1240

=========== My Questons ===================

1) If someone has this board and BIOS can they explain to me when I should set the CSM for UEFI when running Windows 7?
2) My BIOS shows Boot Secure Enabled but I can't figure out how to turn it off and this "Secure Boot" choice cannot be toggled.
Is their some setting elsewhere I need to set in order to toggle "Secure Boot"?

3) Under PCH Storage Configuation they indicate this item will automatically detect between M.2 devices and SATA devices. What are M.2 devices?

4) Under SATA Mode Selection (AHCI)
this has a setting of IDE, AHCI, and RAID. With a SATA boot drive and setting to IDE, Windows 7 will Not load. I iniitally thought that if I had a non-boot IDE drive attached that needed to be set for it (the IDE), obviously Not. Any ... Read more

Project: All-new hardware (case, PS, mobo, CPU etc etc) with an NTLite-integrated-update W7 on a flash drive.

Lots of steep learning curves building this W7 + 200 updates flash drive, but that's finally done.

But now I've plugged the flash drive into my shiny new Asus Z170M-Plus motherboard, I've got a whole new set of problems with the UEFI Bios and Safeboot. I think I've solved it, but in the course of several days of head-scratching and research online, I've turned up some interesting information. Anyone seen this website?

Code:
http://dellwindowsreinstallationguide.com/ensure-you-have-the-correct-sata-configuration-in-the-bios-setup-for-your-configuration/uefisecure-boot-disable/
I've trimmed out some irrelevant stuff but, basically the guy says this:

Quote:
Associated with UEFI is SecureBoot. This is a newer security technologies which only allows 64 Bit code with a Microsoft signature to boot. Codes without such a signature will be rejected and so only only certified code will boot. This makes the boot process secure preventing malicious code from booting. The Microsoft signatures are only present in Windows 8 64 Bit media and later.

In many systems the optical drive (which is falling into obsolescence) will not have the hardware signatures to be enabled as a boot device when secure boot is enabled so I recommend booting exclusively from USB for newer systems.

Hi there. I've built a new HTPC. I'm trying to install Windows 7 Ultimate x64 on my HDD using the latest version of Rufus to make a bootable USB drive. I've realised that I have UEFI BIOS now, so I've searched for tutorials on how to setup Windows 7 using UEFI and a USB drive. I've disabled Secure Boot and Fast Boot in the UEFI BIOS. I've made bootable USB drive using GPT partition scheme for UEFI, FAT32 file system and default cluster size. The UEFI BIOS shows my UEFI USB drive and boots. But then, after "Windows is loading files" window, setup ends up with a blue screen. I have only one HDD and it's not empty. It has Windows 7 Ultimate x86 installed that I use on my old system and I'm forced to use for now.

Hi there,
My sister just bought a new desktop. It was working fine and all. But this morning, she forced shut down a windows update. The next thing happen once it gets past through BIOS is
"Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key"
So I told her to look at the BIOS setting and it only recognise the Optical Disc Drive of
"SATA SM: TSSTcorp CDDVD SH-2"
as shown in the picture below

Is there anything I can do? I tried opening the desktop case and see everything is loose, but everything was still in tact.
Any suggestion would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

A:Hard Disk Drive not found in ASUS UEFI BIOS Utility - EZ Mode

Try reinstalling the driver, changing cables. If it can't be recognized then boot the maker's diagnostics DOS CD scan to test it - Seatools if there isn't one - or Partition Wizard bootable CD surface scan. If these won't see it you can slave it to another PC to try Disk Check or see if it will see it. If not then I'd replace it.

Do a Clean Reinstall on the replacement drive from tutorial in my signature below if you want it perfect.

Trying to reset the password on and old C400, it is asking for primary or administrator password. I have no idea what to put in there, and can't see if  the computer will function at all!  Any help would be greatly appreciated!  Thanks!

A:Need the reset for password on Latitude C400, bios revision A06, original password.?

You'll need to call Dell with verification of ownership -- it may not be worth it though, since the call will cost about $60, which is probably about six times more than the entire system is worth.
The other option is to replace the mainboard - which is probably well under $60.

**** You need to enable Legacy MBR by Enabling Launch CSM in the EFI Setup ****

Hello all,

This is my first post. I am a Windows 7 user and now (against my will) Windows 8.

I bought an ASUS N76 laptop pre-loaded with Windows 8 so these are the new generation n76 series. The old ones come with Windows 7. Anyway...

I attempted to boot a Windows 7 ULT 64 install DVD but the install hangs on the Windows logo/flag. So...

- Windows is loading files is shown and hidden
- The animated Windows logo appears and then it just hangs....go figure

I have no idea what is going wrong. I went into the UEFI setup and the only option for my BR is EUFI boot.

I also added a "boot option" asking the EFI to boot "efi\microsoft\boot\boot.efi" or "\efi\microsoft\boot\boot.efi" but when selected (from Boot Override), the screen goes blank for a few seconds, the BR starts spinning and I am thrown back at the EFI so it looks like it cannot find the file. For path, I selected the BR device and at the end has a "\".

I have secure boot disabled. (yep, I have an option for that). So now I am left empty handed and I am stuck with Windows 8. I even put in a brand new SSD hoping I would install W7 on it but I can't even start the setup!! Argh....

I am very experienced with MBR and BIOS but I am a complete newbie to UEFI. I don't know what is going wrong and why the setup hangs....Ther... Read more

I am very very frustrated since I waited a while to get this motherboard from china. My last DFI board randomly died on me and I ordered this as a replacement because I wanted a decent 775 board. I worked on it all night tonight and despite it reading all the hardware... it will not boot unless I reset the cmos every time. On top of that... I can not get the bios to update... it doesn't read any of the 5 usb drives I tried (fat/fat32). Also I tend to get this grey screen when trying to flash it sometimes. I am beside myself at this point after fussing with it for hours on end and I really need some help.

Sounds like either the BIOS is corrupted or the motherboard battery is a goner.

Have you tried burning the new BIOS to a bootable CD ?

Hello @Panosfg Welcome to the HP Support forum. Thank you for posting.  You have posted in the Business section for business class devices. If your PC is Elitebook or Probook (business class device) you should note that most business class notebooks (including yours Elitebook and Probook) have better security. Assistance for such problems is usually free of charge for business class devices.  BIOS update >> personally, I do not recommend you do it unless you experience some issues with your existing BIOS and you are sure that the new BIOS will fix it. General recommendation I provide to users/customers is NOT to upgrade BIOS/UEFI unless they experience any kind of specific BIOS/UEFI issue. Updating just for updaing and just for using the latest verson is not solution. Any kind of update (no matter for what and who relesed it) can fix 2 issues but may introduce 10 more issues. Additionally, upgrading the BIOS (for any vendo... Read more

Please!!! Need help ASAP! OK, so quick backstory. About a year ago my Dell Inspiron 15 was stolen from someone I knew that is now is jail. I got it back a couple of months after it was stolen. I went to boot it up and sign in but all that popped up was a black screen with a blue rectangle in the middle saying "Enter Current Password". I didn't know the password as I never set one. I contacted relatives  of his that I knew and they gave me the 3 passwords he usually uses.  None of them worked. Idk if he tried to wipe the hard-drive or what.  I assume he was planning on selling it. After that I kinda put it aside for awhile because I didn't  really need a laptop at the time. But 10 months later and now I REALLY need it because I'm starting school soon. I don't care if I lose everything on it, just need it to work again.  Based on my research I think my BIOS needs to be reset.  Can a Dell expert please help me? It would REALLY be appreciated.

Hi, Try the following. Shutdown the notebook, unplug the AC Adapter and remove the battery. Remove the rtc cell from the system board - see Page 57 of your Maintenance & Service Guide. Hold down the power button for 60 seconds. Leave the machine like this for a few hours, then re-insert the rtc cell, plug in the AC Adapter ( leave the main battery out for now ) and start the notebook. Unfortunately, if this procedure doesn't clear the password, it probably indicates that 'Stringent Security' has also been enabled in the bios - if that's the case, there is no way of removing/resetting the password. Regards, DP-K

To remove the BIOS passwords you need to short the 2 contacts marked RTC RESET. Remove the memory cover. Look for the 2 contacts between wireless card and memory.   Remove main battery and AC. Use a small flathead screwdriver to short the 2 contacts. Passwords are gone. If STRINGENT SECURITY is enabled this will NOT work. Let us know if it works for you. REO  I must inform you that these services are not endorsed by HP, and that HP is not responsible for any damage that may arise to your system by using these services. Please be aware that you do this at your own risk.

Used an x-acto knife because the blade is thinner than on a screwdriver. When attempted to short with the screwdriver, the short did not happen because the spacing is extremely small. Accepted as Solution.

Hello @Hemiboy,  We are sorry as there is no master password or generator for EliteBooks or ProBooks. This is to inform you that all HP Business Notebooks such as Probooks  or Elitebooks have more stringent security than consumer models infact they don't produce 'halt codes', the password cannot be derived from the Serial Number and the code is stored in non-volatile memory so removing the RTC cell will not reset the password in this case.  Please Contact HP Business Notebook support they should be able to send you a customized SMC.bin file which you can use at boot to reset the password.                                    When talking to the HP rep ask them to escalate your service request.   Hope this helps, for any further queries reply to the post and feel free to join us again !!  **Click the White Thumbs Up Button on the right to say Thanks**Make it easier for other people to find solutions by marking a Reply 'Accept as Solution' if it solves your problem. Thank You,GBL84I am not an HP Employee

Trying to fix an Aspire E1-531.

BIOS previously had password set - which I KNEW.

Tried disabling BIOS password by entering current password then pressing [Enter] as 'new password' and 'confirm password'

BIOS is still password protected - and it now won't accept EITHER password.

Help!
