XPS15 9550 + TB15 cannot display 4K in dual displays

Q: XPS15 9550 + TB15 cannot display 4K in dual displays

i could not manage to extend my laptop dell xps 15 9550 through TB15 dock to two monitors (U2717D) in 4K. The max resolution that I got is 2K on each monitor.
I tried all the combo with mDP, DP and HDMI, the best I got is 4K for 1 monitor.
The techcenter assured me that using mDP and DP, TB15 can deliver 4K in dual display at 60hz and with HDMI 4K in dual display but at 30hz.
I got nothing on these from intel HD graphics control panel but only 2K at 59/60hz (which is the max available).
However, on the dell website, the TB15 do deliver 4K in dual display at 60hz.
If anyone managed to configure the 4K resolution in multiple displays, extended desktop (as display mode), please let me know

Preferred Solution: XPS15 9550 + TB15 cannot display 4K in dual displays

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: XPS15 9550 + TB15 cannot display 4K in dual displays

As a workaround... Try disabling Switchable Graphics in BIOS. Part of the problem for me on Dell Precision 7710 (AMD/Intel video) had to do with unable to display 3 external monitors concurrently with Laptop's monitor (for total of 4). I made sure I was running latest firmware of laptop and followed the docking station's driver/firmware updates (found elsewhere here), and I have far fewer issues. I also found that the hub's Realtek GB Ethernet only ran at full 1GB speed when the power plan for Winidows 10 was set to High Performance.
Good luck,

From my laptop xps 15 9550, i couldn't figure out how to extent properly 4k resolution on each monitor.
If I refer the dell website, I am supposed to be able to dual display 4k resolution on each monitor:http://www.dell.com/support/article/us/en/19/SLN301105

Whatever I tried several as combinaisons in extended desktop, i cannot get the 4K (but only the 2K max) at 59/60hz, i cannot even get the 4k in 30hz available in the HD graphics control panel:Primary display : dell 1 u2717d
Secondary display : dell 2 u2717d
Built-in display : laptop xps 15 9550 in on or none

Do you guys have the same issue ? or anyone already solved it ?

(The TechCenter asked me to use mDP and DP instead of using mDP and HDMI, the issue remains the same fyi whatever the combo between mDP, DP and HDMI)

Hi, my old laptop XPS L502X had a key on the top row to turn off the display.  This would enable me to trun off the screen, while things downloaded in the background.  My new laptop doesn't have this key.  Is there a way you can turn off the display?

So I bought this XPS15 laptop (i5, 4K touchscreen) to work with. But when I attach it to my HP27xw monitor with HDMI the monitor screen looses sync every few seconds. It goes black for 2 seconds and turns on again.
What I tried so far:
- Updated BIOS and all FW on laptop
- Tried different laptop on my monitor using same cable (Works fine)
- Tried different HDMI cables to connect
I still have warranty. Its very annoying, because I need this laptop to work with the monitor to be able to do my job. (business owner)

I have an XPS15 + TB15 and I have been unable to connect even a simple wireless mouse through one of the USB ports on the dock -- with two separate units (I was shipped a "replacement unit"). This is amazing as it essentially proves that DELL cannot deliver on the most basic dock functionality. I even have an L2 level tech on record as saying that: "some of the functionality of the device are somewhat non-functional as of the moment." I am really impressed with DELL's ability to get the idea that the TB15 was ready for prime time through "demos" at all the trade shows and industry rags. Well done to the PR department. As a result, I now have $3K worth of laptop which is significantly hobbled by the lack of a proper dock (and of course the whole silliness with the "nostril-cam" -- we get it, you have no bezel, but guess what, putting the builtin webcam at the bottom of the screen means you have no bezel and no functional webcam either). I should've waited for the Skylake Macbook Air...

Last week, my TB15 worked pretty reliably. However, starting today, the DisplayPort just randomly shuts done. The only fix is to reboot the laptop.
The HDMI output continues to work fine.
This is really slowing me down, because I rely heavily on multiple monitors.
Anyone else seeing issues with the DisplayPort on the TB15?
I'm pretty sure this is a heat issue. The unit is always hot to the touch when it shuts down.

Dell XPS15 + TD15 is the biggest fail of 2015 and 2016.
This is unbelievable example of software team incompetency.
If XPS15 works in common stable after 6+ months after sales started.
While TB15 not only lags, but every new software update adds new lags and bugs, even not always fixing previous. This is unbelievable worst software processes.
And this is one of the best PC laptop and one of the best Thunderbolt dock.

The problem is not new:
I have Dell XPS15 9550 + TB15.
Sure this doesn't work with a closed lid with any configuration.
But it doesn't work even with opened lid. I used this manual to configure and update drivers/firmware.
It was working for me in June, and first part of August (sure with lags, but I was able to work with this).
But then, suddenly %), without any updates, lags frequency increased. And my external monitor became turning off every 1-10 minutes. Sound and mouse too.
Without any updates, like a magic.
After updating from scratch of all drivers and firmware (the same manual), nothing changed.
Actually I think monitor works with more lags.
As a customer who used V131 laptop, Dell monitor for many years, it looks like that were last products I purchased..

If I buy XPS 9550 laptop, TB15 dock and UP2715K monitor how can I connect them to have [email protected]?
The dock only has 1 mDP and 1DP ports and the monitor requires double DP cable.
I'm reading a lot of bad things about TB15 dock (cables disconnect, 9550 laptop fans make a lot of noise etc.). Is it even working or will I have such problems?

A:TB15, xps 9550 and UP2715K - [email protected]?

Laptop fan is not a big issue after the newest updates but USB and ethernet disconnects still.
Don't buy the product until they fix these fundamental problems. The displayport is working still but I am not sure about your specific situation.

Just received my 4th XPS 9550, previous onces had faulty motherboard, keys falling off, and faulty hard drive). I updated everything straight off of the dell website, including the bios. But I still can't get my thunderbolt dock to work. I plug it in and makes the noise indicating something is being plugged and unplugged. It looks like it can't decide between being on wifi or LAN and the Realtek USB GbE family controller keeps on disappearing in the device manager. I have updated that drivers as well.
XPS 15 9550 i7 500GB SSD 16GB RAM Windows 10 64 Pro
The dock will somewhat work if I don't have the LAN cable plugged in the back. I can't use any wireless devices (mouse) plugged into the dock because it stops working after a minute. I've also noticed the ASMedia USB controller has fault icon on it. Tried updating those drivers. Every once in a while, the second monitor will go in and out.
I have conducted all their diagnostic tests and all are good.
Anyone have any suggestions?
I'm a student and need my laptop everyday. If this is another hardware issue, I'm going to return it. I doubt the 5th unit in 1.5 months will be any different.

A:XPS 9550 not working with TB15 Dock

If it's of any consolation, we are all experiencing the same problems:
1) LAN disconnecting2) USB devices connected to the dock disconnecting3) External monitors blanking out for a few seconds4) Fans ramping up and extremely noisy when dock is connected.
It's not the laptop (I replaced 3 for the same reasons you mentioned). It's most likely (or at least I hope so) the thunderbolt software/firmware.
I'm still trying to decide whether to return my TB15 or wait for Intel/Dell to fix this...

Can the Dell XPS 15 9550 w/ 4K Touch Display be configured with both a PCIe SSD and a 2.5" drive?  Dell Chat Support says "yes", but I have also read that the 4K Touch Display requires the 84WHr battery which extends to fill the space of the 2.5" drive. At 4:44, in the YouTube video below, I think we see that there is no room for a 2.5" drive. But, maybe Dell has a different model option that supports 4K Touch and dual HDD. This question has probably been posted before, but I didn't find by searching.

A:Dual HDD in XPS 15 9550 w/ 4K Touch Display

If you want the UHD screen, the larger 84 W-Hr battery is mandatory - you do indeed lose the 2.5" drive bay.  The only way to increase internal storage in this model is with a larger capacity M.2 PCIe/NVMe drive.

I got a DVI to VGA adaptor today, so i was hoping to run two displays, but when I plug my secondary moniter into the adaptor and then plug the adaptor into my computer it just wont show! (well it lights up and stuff it just does not display anything, in-other-words, a black screen...)

AND... To answer any questions in advance ...
Yes, I know how to use Catalyst to enable and ajust/set my moniter/TV up.

Yes, I did everything the help center, and other people have told me too do.

Yes, I have the latest version of Catalyst (7.9).

Yes, I have tested the moniter that won't work as secondary on this computer by plugging it in to my VGA port on my card and making it my primary moniter . (YES it worked)

Yes, I know my max settings (Refresh and Resolution) of the secondary moniter and have set them to what they need to be.

And lastly! Yes, Catalyst does find the moniter (It just won't display a picture...)

And, of course, here are the important specs:

Intel Stinkeron D, 3.33ghz... (oh I mean Celeron D )
ASRock 775i65g Mobo...
ATI Radeon 9550(SE): 256 MB... (and if you are too lazy to look it up it does support duel displays and has 1 VGA, 1 DVI, and 1 S-Vid port)
1.5GB of ddr400 RAM...

Hello,Everyone appears to have issues with the dock such as a port not working or stuttering or resetting. But I am not having ANY of these issues. The only issue I am having is I cannot close the lid with an external monitor. I have already changed the settings on the XPS 9550 to "Do Nothing" when the lid is closed both on battery power and without. I also plugged it into the power adapter just in case.
What happens when I do close the lid is the external monitor goes to sleep and ALL peripherals connected no longer work (including display) after opening the XPS again. I have to restart the computer for the dock to work again.
No overheating issues, no fan issues, no stuttering, other than this small problem. Anybody have any solutions?

A:XPS 9550 TB15 dock combo, closed lid issue?

This isn't a TB15 issue. I've seen the same problem with third-party USB-C video adapters. I believe it is a power management problem. If you're using Windows make sure your power management features are configured so that when the laptop lid is closed Windows will "Do Nothing" when you're connected to AC power. (YOU DID THAT.) If you're using a Dell monitor, I found that some of them have hyper- aggressive power management features. On my UP3216q, there's a setting to disable the monitor sleep feature but it doesn't work. And there is almost no delay between when the monitor loses the picture signal and it begins its sleep countdown. If I reboot my XPS 15 9550, the monitor will be asleep before the machine comes back up. I'm using Windows 10 and I also have some questions about the power management features there. In fact the whole settings/control panel dichotomy is really screwed up.
I have an additional problem with closing lid — it can cause the monitor to blink on and off. This seems to be a Dell laptop to Dell monitor problem. And it may be 4K and/or USB-C related. Here's how I solved the problem, and you're not going to like it. But I'm getting used to it: I just tuck the laptop under the monitor edge and leave it open 3 inches.
By the way, I'm not having any problems with the TB15 either. In fact I just ordered a second one. You really have to keep up to date on the drivers and firmware, though. The ones... Read more

Hi All,
I have a XPS15 9550 laptop (with the 1TB SSD option)  The SSD is installed in the conventional storage bay.   I ran the intel rapid storage app and it implies there is another SSD bay inside, but currently empty.

Here's a screen grab.  I think the empty internal port is for a mini SSD 'stick' type hard drive.  I think it's an "M.2" type slot but I'm not sure.   Would one of these fit?

Because as you can see, I requested several times to repair this notebook. I'm really sick of it. I really don't think this one has virus. Thus I don't wanna install any program to wasting my time. I hope that you understand my situation. Thus I wanna refund or change new one. If you refund I would be more happier than change new one happy. Because after changing new one, same problem, I won't call you guys again. I will definitely buy other brand. It was my first time to buy Dell laptop. Really disappointed. I hope other people won't make same problem like me. I used to use other brand and never had problem.

Per Dell policy;* A refund is only possible if requested inside the FIRST 30 days from the original invoice date.* Any system exchange after the first 30 day will be a refurbished, not new.At this point, all we can do on this Forum is troubleshoot the flicker issue. If we diagnose that hardware is at fault, you would then contact Technical Support to arrange either parts replacement or refurbished system exchange.* Reinstall our Intel HD graphics driver* Restart the laptop when finished* Reinstall our Nvidia GTX 960M graphics driver* Restart the laptop when finished and retest

I have a XPS15 9550 and spilled tea (chinese tea without any sugar) onto the laptop back in early August!  I ordered a certified refurbished motherboard from eBay and installed it.  I have the following issues:
It has taken very long time to complete the POST and it has trouble doing the restart.
I am also having issue with my wifi as the connection keeps dropping out.  This issue is repeatable both at home and work.
I suspect that I have to do some changes to the BIOS setting and I would like to find out if I can get a copy of the correct BIOS setting for this laptop?
I also have a working XPS 13 9350 and I am not sure if I can use the BIOS setting for this 9350 laptop for reference and make changes to the BIOS setting for 9550?

I was so pleased that I could finally afford to buy a top of the range laptop.
After years of building my own PCs to a budget, price was finally no object.
So £1600 later, I'm happy, right? No. I'm not. This computer is a pile of *** and I hate myself for having parted with so much money for such a poor product and, more importantly, such poor service from Dell.
- Dell Premier Color - update install wouldn't work. Uninstalled it completely on the advice of Dell techs as a 'just try this', so now I don't even have the old version.
- Can't save things easily to Desktop. I've stopped that many Services - from Dell ones, to Intel ones to Nvidia ones, based on advice from forums across the internet - yet I still get the 'working on it' blank from Windows Explorer when I try to save things to Desktop.
- When I turn my external 4k monitor off and then back on again, all the windows which were left open (the laptop itself doesn't get turned off) are reduced in size as if they've been viewed on the laptop screen. So I have to move them all about and resize them again. Used to be ok - changed after a BIOS update.
- Had to wait six months from laptop launch for the appropriate USB-C adaptor to be available (so that I could have a wired network connection). I think the webstore link for it online is still broken; I only found out about because I moaned at one of Dell's sales chat bots. Ordered it; delivery promised in 2 days. Took... Read more

Hey everyone,
Unfortunately, the port on the 9550 is HDMI 1.4 (max resolution of 1920x1080 for external monitors). I recently purchased a Thunderbolt to HDMI 2.0 adapter in an attempt to get around this, but I have not been able to figure out how to get any higher resolution so far. According to the NVIDIA control panel, outputs to both the screen and the HDMI port are being handled by the integrated graphics, which I suspect might be part of the problem. Still no luck after changing the default GPU in the global settings to the NVIDIA processor.
Has anybody had any luck getting their HDMI output set to run from the NVIDIA GPU?
Note: This is the model with the FHD screen (1920x1080 native resolution).

I keep getting a DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE blue screen right after Windows 10 has booted.
It always seems to happen when I move from network to network, eg. If I am working on my home WiFi network and then take my laptop to my work place I will get the DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE blue screen and vice-versa.
The machine will boot fine however if I've not travelled to new network.
Any ideas, it's a really annoying problem.

You will need to find out some more info somehow.  One way might be to check the BlueScreen message with the square barcode.  On the bottom of the text it might mention some file involved.
For instance, when I had an Intel Dual Band Wireless AC 3165 card installed, I was showing a problem with Netwtw04.sys.
Are your getting any dump files as either Memory.dmp or mini-dump files which would be in a mini-dump folder?  Do you know how to set your system to use the smaller mini-dump files if you have not already done that.

Morning, Trying to figure out something here, this is, for all intents and purposes, something new for me, as I've been mostly a "Mom n Pop" Tech vs "Business Tech" so, anyway. I'm working with M900, and M910Q with Intel 530 Integrated for video. I'm trying to trouble the following issues to verify if I missed anything, before punting said minipcs to Lenovo for RMA. Anywho, issues: 1. A M910Q, only the DP port with the metal bracket will work. When the Primary is plugged in, any secondary plugged into the other ports will show up under that port when looking at it in the Intel GFX Display view. I figured this out when I changed the resolution on the 2nd monitor, primary changes. Primary is the live monitor. 2. We have a number of M910s and M900's where when trying to use dual monitors, thru DP -> VGA or DP -> DVI. Monitors would flicker like strobe lights. This can sometimes be bandaided by swapping cables and adapters, but not completely remove the issue. I will point out that we do not have any actual DP Capable monitors on site. Not yet anyway, and those that will be, are going to ThinkCentres with Discrete Cards in them... Ideas? Am I miss anything? I don't see anything in the BIOS to help me, and updating the drivers doesn't seem to provide resolution either. Most are running old drivers, but a few are running the latest for the machine.

I just took delivery of the system a few weeks ago (coming from a 2012 XPS 17 l702x that's showing its age, even with 16GB ram), and no issues with it of any importance but I do have a question that I'm very curious about. The Nvidia adapter (GeForce GTX 960M) is supposed to be a selling point, right? So why is it when I open the control panel to see what programs it is used for, it is basically only Chrome and all other programs the Intel with no option to choose.
Am I missing where to change a setting to allow me to choose to at least have the option to use it?
On a positive note, the laptop is a peresonal computer but went with this one for muscle to run some CPU intense programs, like autoCAD for work. I like lots of visible "acreage" on the screen so the 4k monitor is a great change from the HD of the l702x. I have been going back and forth chatting with Dell support, having a hard time getting through the flow-chart responses to try and ask a simple question of if the system will extend the display to a second screen in 4k, and is so, what will I need hardware wise.
The final result from tech support was I need a  Thunderbolt 3-DisplayPort adapter and get a 4k device with DisplayPort input ( Turns out, that's not cheap), as the onboard HDMI output does NOT support HDMI 2.0. This is all while he knew I had (have) a Dell DA200 adapter.

Just 15 months ago I bought a new Dell XPS15-9550 direct from Dell. The top model (i7 processor, ultra-HD display). Expensive, but a quality laptop, with I assumed many years of life ahead.
Then a month ago the battery (a Dell type 4GVGH 84 Wh 11,4 V) started expanding, pushing the touch pad up and out of the case. A little research on the net showed this is a known problem with this battery. I demounted and disposed of the battery – I wasn’t going to risk a fire or worse.
I knew that Dell only offers a 1 year warranty on the battery, so I knew I would have to pay for a replacement battery. But I naively assumed I could get hold of replacement parts for an expensive 15 month old laptop. After all the 9550 was still being sold on the Dell site until very recently.
I now discover that Dell no longer offers batteries for the XPS15-9550, nor are they available from anyone else here in Denmark or in Europe. I can buy a “copy” from China, but I’m not comfortable with that.
I can still use the laptop with external power, but . . .
Dell – this is not acceptable.

A:Dell XPS15-9550 battery (4GVGH) expanding

Dell doesn't sell batteries for systems where the battery is internal - it's not considered user-replaceable.  They will replace the battery but you must contact them for an out-of-warranty repair estimate - the battery is sold only with the labor to replace it.

I got this new UP2414Q monitor, I tried both thunderbolt3 (xps15) to displayport (the monitor) and hdmi(xps15) to hdmi (the monitor) and both of them did not work. I was also installing Dell Monitor Driver Installer from C:\Dell\Drivers\XVH9H however it shows
The following connected monitors have been detected:
Sharp Plug and Play Monitor - SHP143E
Drivers for the following monitors have been found: Dell UP2414Q (DP) - DEL409C Dell UP2414Q (HDMI) - DEL409B
Drivers for the following connected monitor can be installed: None
Please connect your monitor before running this program.

And I also installed Dell Display manager, the newest intel graphics and nvidia graphics driver from DELL driver website. But there is just nothing going on the monitor screen. And I cannot see any other monitor detected in the device manager except the 'Generic pnp monitor'
For the monitor OSD, i can only choose HDMI/mini DP/DP, only these 3 options are available and I cannot get into the menu (see the photo)

You don?t want to use HDMI because the XPS 15 only has HDMI 1.4, which isn?t enough for 4K @ 60 Hz. For DisplayPort, what adapter did you use to connect it to the USB-C/Thunderbolt port?

The Microsoft Designer Keyboard and Mouse operates very intermittently. I notice this most frequently when the XPS15 dims or turns off the display but it can also happen spontaneously while I'm moving the mouse pointer around. I think both mouse and keyboard stop working at the same time. I have found that sometimes, if I use the trackpad to move the mouse pointer around, the Designer mouse starts working again. If not, it appears to not update the mouse pointer indefinitely or until I reboot the XPS15.
I've spent time pairing and unpairing the mouse. Pairing pairing fails maybe 10-20 % of the time.
I found this post: http://arstechnica.com/civis/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=1300323. I don’t have a Dell Wireless 1830 802.11ac shown as a Network Adapter, but there is a Dell Wireless 1830 Bluetooth 4.1 LE in Bluetooth. It doesn’t have any settings for Collaboration:

Where has this setting moved? Or, does anyone have any other suggestions?

I have a Dell XPS15 9550 with 1TB Hard disk, it is the basic XPS15 Model from 2016. Purchased from Amazon in August 2016.
It makes a noise. Listen to attached mp3 sound file.
The noise happens at 5-9sec, 25-33sec and 45-1:03secs during the recording. It repeats generally lasting 18seconds duration. This was when the laptop is switched on, and only running windows 10, no other programs.
I used a sound recorder on my iphone and when the hiss noise kicks in it reads 58db compared to a normal 45-50db range without the noise.
It is a hissing noise coming from the bottom right corner(facing the laptop keyboard) - where the hard drive is located.
No one at dell support can listen to this file to tell me if it is normal noise or not. I have had dell support remotely update all BIOS and chipset files. We replaced the hard drive for a new one and it makes exactly the same sound. Its not the sound card or speaker. Its definitely the hard disc spinning. Dell support said maybe it was a "capacitor" and it should be sent in for a motherboard replacement???
Please tell me I am not going mad. It is a noticeable noise, you can hear it throughout a large room. When watching a film etc.
Please some answers!
1) What is the noise?
2) Is this normal?
3) How do I get rid of it?
4) If I cant, which XPS15 variant does not have this noise? Is the i7 with SSD quieter?
Many thank you for your help.

A:XPS15 i5 9550 2016 Noise coming from hard disk?

Some hard drives have wear-leveling algorithms that move the head stack assembly at random when the drive is idle -- so they're not flying over the same position on the disc for long periods of time.  If you've had the drive replaced and the replacement is from the same manufacturer, that's probably what you're hearing.
If the noise is bothersome, replace the hard drive with a solid state drive -- which will make no noise at all.

Hello everyone,
I have my xps 15 for a few months now but still I haven't found any solutions for my problems.
1st Problem:
Whenever I boot windows (or sometimes after energy-saving mode) the keyboard just doesn't work at all. I already tried waiting for a few minutes and smashing every button on it, nothing made the keyboard working again. To solve this I have to restart the computer after that it works.
2nd Problem:
Whenever I close it while running, it just won't "wake up" again. The power-button-light lights after opening the laptop but the screen stays black.
3rd Problem:
Sometimes when I want to boot windows it just won't. I see the "DELL"-logo then the few blinks at the top-left corner of the screen (A white '_' blinks 3 times) and after that nothing happens.

So these are my problems. I hope somebody can help me with these because it's very anoying if I have to start the computer twice so that it works like it should.
If you have any more detailed questions please ask them.
sincerely SgtDomo

P.S.: I have most of the "recommended" drivers installed but if you think I am missing one, please also tell me

I've had my XPS15 for over a year now, and I recently noticed that my touchpad is starting to life off the palm rest area of the machine, and the buttons no longer work. I'm not exactly sure when this happened because I'm a staunch mouse user and hardly ever use the touchpad. Is this an item that can be repaired under warranty? Also, is this a commonly reported problem with this model?

A:XPS15 9550 touchpad starting to lift up, buttons not working

Yes, It's a known issue:en.community.dell.com/.../20018137. If you are under warranty then call dell to see if they can help you, but as far I know battery warranty last one year

I recently update my bios to the latest 1.4.0 version. Now after entering sleep mode (due to closing the lid) and resuming my disk (/home) is not populated correctly. I'm using linux debian 9.
I use an internal nvme flash disk as root filesystem w/o HW encryption security and that disk is resumed ok. On a secondairy ssd disk using hw encryption as which serves are my home partition, after bios update this partition is not resumed correctly. The disk is there but the encryption password is not set so the disk will not work. After reboot and typing the password the disk is usable again.
On the previous bios 1.2.14 this setup was working fine, when upgraded to 1.4.0 this started to fail.
In the release notes of 1.4.0 there are bugs fixed with password security for encrypted disk so I assume this is why behavior has changed, but this introduces bugs on my system. Is there anyway to fix this? or a newer version of the Bios available?

Hi all,
I got my new XPS 15 9550 2 days ago. Everything went fine at first but tonight when coming back home the laptop won't turn on. I tried the following (both with AC adaptor plugged in or not)
If I press power button the battery status lights blinks 4 times white and é times orange repeatedly.
I tried pressing power button for one minute - nothing.
Pressing Fn key and power button - then the keyboard lights turn on  for about 5 seconds then turn off, and same blinking of the battery status lights as described above.
Any idea what to do ? Dell technical support doesn't seem to work on week end...

I had my setup working perfectly on Arch Linux before updating my bios. The dock could be plugged and unplogged at will without crashing. After updating to the latest bios (To get the Intel ME vulnerability patch) it doesn't work anymore.
Connected on the dock:
One 1080P screen (HDMI)
Another 1080P screen (Display port)
USB mouse and keyboard
Ethernet cable
3.5mm jack to sound system

Setup that worked
Bios: 1.2.18
Kernel: 4.10.6-1-ARCH

Setup that crashes
Bios: 1.2.25
Kernel: 4.10.6-1-ARCH
Kernel: 4.10.13-1-ARCH

Expected behavior
Connecting the dock when the laptop is powered works.
Connecting the dock when the laptop is turned off and booted works

Actual behavior
Connecting the dock when the laptop is powered crashes the system
Connecting the dock when the laptop is truned off works, but mouse and keyboard don't work.

Anyone has pointers on how I could resolve this issue?
Thank you very much.

I'm using an external monitor that scales at 100% (1440p 32"). The internal monitor is 4K, so scales at 250%. In a day I might need to plug and unplug the external monitor (from HDMI port) several times, and after a few times, it seems to struggle with switching between the scaling of external and internal monitors. On Chrome, for example, scrolling sometimes is noticeably lagging, and new pages will flash multiple times as they are loading. Moving Chrome over to the internal monitor (with 250% scaling) and everything seems to work fine. Restarting Chrome doesn't change the issue. A whole reboot is necessary.
I would guess it's a driver issue. I also have light screen flickering, though I only notice it when not using the external monitor.

I have been experiencing issues with my USB keyboard on my XPS15 9550 w/TB16 Dock when the Logitech G610 USB keyboard is plugged into TB16 USB 2.0 port in the back.
The keyboard will hang, accepting no input. or may hang on a certain letter, thus producing an "aaaaaaaa" across the screen until the keyboard "comes back".
Keyboard seems to work fine while plugged directly into the XPS15 rather than the TB16.
I also have an external USB drive for backups that I use connected to the TB16, although seems to be functioning fine. I have not had a backup fail, so, I assume it is working fine.
I have tried downloading all of the drivers, and re-installing them in the proper order according to the documentation while disconnected from the TB16, and then connecting to the dock.

Is anyone else experiencing a similar issue?  Is it the dock or the 9550?

A:USB Keyboard Hangs/Quits working on XPS15 9550 and Thunderbolt Dock TB16 . W10Pro x64

If you happen to run Citrix Receiver, make sure you're running at least version 4.9, since earlier versions are known to cause USB issues with the TB16, although that typically presents as the USB ports not working at all.  If not, then there was also an issue with intermittent USB device disconnects that was eventually solved through a combination of drivers and firmware, so when you say you've downloaded all of the drivers, please confirm that includes:
- Thunderbolt firmware
- Thunderbolt software
- ASMedia USB Host Controller driver

Hi ! I need help to determine if I just plug in the samsung evo850 drive with oxdygx cable, onto the motherboard, with the UEFI-bios ask me to initialize the evo850 dirve?  If yes, after format the evo850 as GPT, will the bios manage the 512g pcie ssd as C drive (with windows 10 in it) and evo850 as D drive (data disk)?
Another question is whether hdd password can be managed by the uefi-bio just like the legacy bios?
Also whether a similiar hdd password can be used on 512 pcie ssd?

A:newly purchase xps15-9550 pcie 512g ssd 84 wh battery - try to add evo 850 on to the hdd slot, take out the 84 wh battery

The initialization takes place under WIndows - NOT in setup.  UEFI will detect the drive, but you must use the disc manager to partition and format it.

Hopefully you realize you'll need to replace that 84 W-H battery with a 56 W-H unit (the drive needs the space occupied by the extra cells in the larger battery).
Your existing C drive will be unaltered - if you have no other drives attached, the new drive should show up as D>
You should be able to set a password on both drives -- that said, they're not of much security (they can be removed and once that's done, the data is open for access).  Effectively if you have a need for security, drive encryption (bitlocker if you have 10 Pro) is a much, much, much better idea.
Also be advised:  the hard drive password ties the drive to the system.  If for some reason the mainboard gets damaged, the data will not be accessible without the intervention of a data recovery/password removal service, so backups - of both drives -- are ESSENTIAL.

Hi all,
can anyone tell me or point me to a source that will give me clarity on the question if the GTX960M in the XPS15 9550 does support NVidia G-Sync via the USB-C/TB3 Port? Of course I would need an adaptor from USB-C to DP if the Screen only supports DP as Input but the question here is about the G-Sync capability of the XPS15/the GTX960M.
Thanks in adance

A:XPS15 9550 - NVidia G-Sync on External G-Sync Monitor

According to nVidia, the minimum GPU for G-sync is the GTX965m.
The notebook mainboard must also support G-sync  -- something I suspect the 9550 does not.
