Having computer issues. Computer is running Windows 7 Professional Service Pack1

Q: Having computer issues. Computer is running Windows 7 Professional Service Pack1

Computer has not been working good for several weeks. It keeps shutting down and giving me a blue screen of death. Some days it will happen within minutes of logging in other times it won't happen for several hours or if I am lucky a day or two.  Right now I am logged under safe mode because it has been happening so much. Would appreciate some help with this issue. Thanks!!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I am facing a strange issue. I am using a Vista Service Pack1 installed PC as one end of an IPSec connection. The other end is a Linux node.

Am using "advfirewall consec" to configure rules. Rule properties are:
transport mode, DHgroup2 , AES128 bit mode, 3600 secs lifetime, action=requireinrequireout of main mode.
Quickmode parameters are: 3600secs life time, 5 mins idle timeout, AES128, SHA1.

According to my application the linux node has to initate the ISAKMP negotation. If this happens then the IPSec negotiation is complete and I checked the SA's formed by using: "netsh firewall dynamic" show mmsas, show qmsas. Both the commands displayed one entry each for the other side. This is the successful case. In this case there are 3 pairs of main mode packets and two pairs of quick mode packets exchanged.

Failure case is: I have a TCP application running on the Vista PC which also tries to connect to the Linux box periodically to read statistics from that box. In the failure case both the Linux end and the Vista end start ISAKMP mani mode negotiation respectively ( 3 sets of exchanges happen successfully) and as a result upon execution of the command "netsh ipsec dynamic show mmsas" I see two main SA's with different cookie pairs established between the Vista and the Linux box. On the other side - Linux end we see only one main mode SA. The IPSec connection is sestablished successfuly with One main mode pair and onse quick mode. There ex... Read more

Hi everyone

I have only joined the forum this evening. Unfortunately, I dont know much about fixing computers but I really hope that I may get some advice how to fix my laptop problem.

I recently decided to re-install windows on my laptop. It went fine all the way through till the actual installation of the new windows (ie deleted the old partition and made a new one). The problem is that it is now saying:-

"The file 'asms' on Windows Professional Service Pack 1 CD is needed.
type the path where the file is located, and then click OK"

My laptop does not have a floppy drive.
Any help is much appreciated.

I just got my laptop from service (they replaced a new hard drive and installed windows 7). It is a Sony Vaio ....i own it now but it's a slightly used rent-to-own type of deal so no windows dvd or system restore or anything.

They supposedly restored my computer to factory setting but I can't update my computer.

The bar to the left is red and i see a red shield with a white x and it says most recent checks for updates: never

updates were installed: never

i go to installed programs and nothing has been installed since early 2010.

It's like whenever i try to click check for updates button it's like something is blocking it from connecting and scanning is the best way I can explain it. I desperately need help to update all my software and security patches etc
I found something online where it says to type services.msc and stop it and go to c/windows/softwaredistribution and delete the files and then start the service so then ....
windows updates still won't scan (windows 7)....says service is not running but it is

After an hour and 59 minutes of downloading.........I can't complete the installation. My OS is Win98. I have deleted all my temp files and internet temp files. I did a search for wininit.ini......don't have one. I have closed all running applications (except for systray and Explorer). I have rebooted numerous times. This is what I get:
Setup was unable to install all the components. Please close all applications and try running setup again. (Did this numerous times.)
I click on Help and get this:
It appears you have the correct setup files, but the installation failed. Try closing down all other programs and try running Setup again. If that still does not work, contact MS Product Support Services for additional help.
I went to Microsoft and looked around, but didn't find anything to help........I need some.

This is a long shot but...
I have XP home build 2600 and an Alcatel USB speedtouch modem for adsl. It all runs fine left alone. I have tried to install SP1 on two seperate occasions and both have resulted in re-installation of windows and all other software. After I install SP1 I have Safely remove hardware wizard constantly running, trying to un-install Alcatel speedtouch USB Diagnostics (PPP). The modem also frequently disconnects. Also, the DVD rom and CDRW fail to recognise disks that auto-started before. Installsheild cuts out when trying to install software and all apps have to be installed by My Computer/DVD Rom/Explore and double clicking setup manually. Sometimes this works, sometimes nothing. I have tried updating Modem drivers but problem continues and my connection speed is cut from 576.00kbps to 300.00kbps.
At the moment everything is fine as i have not run xp updates since a clean install. I have also tried installing a newer version of Xp which included SP1. Same things happened again. System is Time Mars DDR333 XP2000 from UK.
I have contacted Time and Alcatel but had no luck so far.
If anyone can point me in the right direction I would appreciate it.

G'Day eumail, Welcome to TSF!

I suggest you try this workaround for Windows Update issues...

How to Repair the Windows Update Files.

1. Go Start > Run.
2. In the box type REGSVR32 WUAPI.DLL > Enter.
3. A message saying, "DllRegisterServer in WUAPI.DLL succeeded" will appear > OK.
4. Now it is necessary to repeat these steps for each of the following files commands:

Once finished; since the temporary folder of Windows Update may be corrupted, please carry out the following steps to rename the folder:

1. Go Start > Run > in the box type cmd > Enter.

Type the following command in the open panel.

net stop WuAuServ

( Please Note:[/b] the computer may need to be rebooted before the net stop command will work.)

2. Go Start > Run > type in the box [/b]%windir%[b] > Enter.
3. In the opened folder, rename the folder ( by Right clicking) SoftwareDistribution to Sdold.
4. Go Start > Run > type in cmd > Enter. In the open command pane, please type:

net start WuAuServ

Once that?s done, Go Start > All Programs > Windows Updates and see if it will allow the downloading/installation of Windows Updates.

Post back with the results.

i noticed that recently i haven't been getting my regular windows updates and now when i click on windows update via the control panel, it takes several minutes to load and then when it finally does, it comes up with a red x and the quote above in the

to AVG it is gone but i have my doubts. i manually downloaded the Microsoft security essential definitions too because it wasn't updating for use and it is now working. The scan is currently in progress but i don't think ill find anything because i did the
same thing with AVG. I tried multiple things from threads like restarting the services and such but to no avail. Please help me, i'm desperate for a windows update. Ill provide any system information that is required for the solution.

Hi all,

So this problem seemed to have started after I pulled a flash drive out that was using Readyboost (pulled out while the computer was off). Since then, I always get the "Failed to connect to a windows service" error showcased in this image: (http://i.imgur.com/eBGnS.jpg). My task bar was also turned gray a la Windows 98 style and I'm not able to get it back. In general, I've noticed a much slower boot and a much slower time switching between tasks on the computer. I'm not sure if this is the right place to post all of this but I thought I'd do it anyway.

I'll attach the files and answer any questions that might follow..pretty sure I do have access to the boot disks as well though it's been awhile since I've completely re installed Windows

When the user tries to login into their laptop whether cabled into our domain network or not, they receive a message "there are currently no logon servers available to service this request".  but if cabled into the network and they wait 5 minutes, they
are able to sign in without issue but it takes 2 to 3 minutes to load the page.  I signed into the laptop with my domain admin account and received the same message as the user, but when we tried cabled in (5 minutes later), i was able to sign in without
issue.  The troubleshooting steps:
1.  Updated the network driver today (still receiving same result)
2.  Re-added the computer to the domain today (still receiving same result)
3.  the event viewer is showing the 5719 NETLOGON message and also 1129 (but the user has been receiving this for a number of months)
4.  The only thing we haven't tried is creating a new user profile but the only reason I don't see that working is because if its happening with my domain admin account it can't be a profile issue.

Any ideas of what could be causing this and is there a fix for it?  I do see there is a hotfix but wasn't sure if we should run it or not.

I restored my computer to Windows 8.1. How do I upgrade it to Windows 8.1 Professional?

Read other answers

I have a question that I cannot find to be clear.

I used to have a Gateway P6831fx, and I installed Windows 7 Professional on it, a couple months later the motherboard died, so I am buying a new computer.

The new computer is a Toshiba Satellite L675D-S7052, it currently has Windows 7 Home Premium

When I spoke to a computer tech, he said that I would be able to use my existing Windows 7 Professional key from the Gateway on the Toshiba, to upgrade it from Home Premium to Windows 7 Professional, since simply putting my Gateway harddrive in the Toshiba wouldn't work, and when I upgrade using my Gateway Windows 7 Professional key I should wipe the drive.

Is this true? Can I do this? All information would be greatly healpful. If you need more information it can be provided.

Update (If I was unclear):

I already have windows 7 professional on my gateway, I was wondering if I could use the product key from my gateway on my toshiba (to upgrade), since the motherboard died on my gateway.

The computer guy I spoke to said I can, but I read otherwise on other websites.

Toshiba = Home Premium (able to upgrade using key I was provided when I bought Windows 7 Professional?)

I don't have an installation disc, I bought Windows 7 Professional as a download (when I installed it on my Gateway), and was provided a key to activate Windows.

Hi guys, haven't had to use this site in a while but suspect I have something screwed up. I am running a dell intel pentium III processor with 996mhz and 512mb of RAM. Windows XP professional version 2002 service pack 3. My system seems slow and not sure what's going on with the mouse. Its a logitec wireless mouse and when i click on it, one of two things happen, either i get an unintentional double click or else it doesn't recognize the click at all.

I'm including a hijackthis. Can someone who knows how to look at this evaluate it for me.

tks mike

My computer has been running fairly slow lately. After running the symantec scanner, etrust and a bunch of other things I found that I have some spyware problems.

XoftspySE says I have problems with WildTangent, CWS.Dreplace, CWS.Oslogo, Purityscan\ClickSpring, and Viewpoint. From what I read Viewpoint came from AOL so I'm not sure if I need to do anything about it.

Here is my log, thanks for any help:

This seems to be new problem, computer is Dell XPS 8700 and has card reader on front panel.
Until recently Computer showed Hard Disk Drive OS C and DVD  RW Drive D. It also showed
each of the 4 card reader connections with Drive letters even with nothing plugged into them.
Now computer is only showing the Hard Drive C and the DVD Drive D, none of the card reader
connections are shown.  I found in control panel Folders view where can make check to show or
hide empty disk drives.  I have it unchecked for not to hide, tried check hide and unhide with
restart after each change and has no effect.
Am I looking in the wrong area to correct problem as when plug in like a digital cameria memory
card it comes up displayed and works ok.  When remove the memory card the drive disappears.
This may have occurred after Windows 7 repair disk was completed.  Can someone give me
some ideas on how to correct?
Thank you

I have a Dell computer that has been customized. It was crashing and freezing and not allowing my son to play online games so I decided to reinstall Windows using a Dell OEM disc. I tried to install through the autoplay function but when the computer rebooted it froze on the Windows start up screen. I reinstalled from the CD instead but when it rebooted the message said the product needed to be activated. I chose "yes" to activate now, and it froze. I reinstalled this time using the repair utility and I am back to a rebooted computer frozen on the Windows screen (the screen with the colored flag logo) saying Please Wait (for the past 2+ hours) with no signs of life from the CPU.... Any ideas what to try next?

A:Computer freezes after reinstall of Windows XP Professional

Boot the computer and press F12 and do the Dell Diagnostics.
It sounds like the HDD is failing. You can also download the ISO image for Seatools in my signature and burn the CD using IMGBurn also in my signature and boot off of the newly created CD and run the Short and Long tests on the HDD This may solve the problem, but if either tests fails the HDD needs to be replaced.

Hy all,

I?m tying to install Win XP Pro SP2 on my computer and just keeps shutting down just after the first reboot (after formatting and loading files).

I mention that I?ve also installed successfully WinVista Ultimate SP 1 (32 bit). I ran Vista for one day?the computer was, in generally stable, but when a program was becoming non-responding?the computer was just freezing and the only way was to reset from case button.

I would appreciate any comments / solutions?

A:[SOLVED] Computer shuts down during installation of Windows XP Professional SP2

PC is shutting down just when saying 39 minutes remaining... :D. Any ideas?

I mention that I already tried all kinds of bios settings...also replaced the HDD, RAM, Video Board... I think is something related with the mobo, something that makes Win XP collapse :D. Anyway I think I will remain stuck with Vista...

Windows Vista is running ok (I figure out that first time I didn't install properly mobo chipset drivers).

P.S. A little correction: mobo rev. is 2.0 not 1.1.

I have had multiple BSOD crashes and have got the most recent dump in the zip file attached. I've recently (yesterday) built my new computer and it keeps getting BSOD's. I have installed all the drivers that came with it and it crashes, updated them, still crashes. There doesn't seem to be many similarities between the BSOD errors, but i'm no computer expert so i wouldn't know. Please take a look and help in any way you can.

Hello yatest,

Install Service pack 1 and all other windows updates.
Learn how to install Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1)
Service Pack Center - Microsoft Windows

Your crash dumps are not showing any finite probable cause. In such a situation, it is better to enable Driver Verifier to monitor the drivers.
Driver Verifier - Enable and Disable
Run Driver Verifier for 24 hours or the occurrence of the next crash, whichever is earlier.

Let us know the results, with the subsequent crash dumps, if any.

Now my company has 50 sets of new computer with same hardware(50 sets of OEM Windows 7 pro will be purchased).  I want to install every software to a master hard disk and clone to each of them.  Please verify my procedures is correct or
1) Install Windows 7 professional to the master computer and activate by a OEM Windows 7 professional license disk.
2) Install all the related software and drivers to the master computer.
3) Use the master computer hard disk to clone 50 sets of hard disks.
4) Install each of cloned hard disk to each of new computer.
Several questions want to clarify:
i) Is the above deployment method correct or not?  If not, please advise.
ii) If yes, do i need to activate each of the cloned hard disk by corresponding OEM license key?
iii) Can i use volume license key?  If yes, what procedures need to do?

I've long made good use of the ability to search for files in my computer running Windows XP Professional by providing the Search Companion with "All or part of the file" or "A word or phrase in the file," but the Search Companion has suddenly begun behaving strangely. Sometimes when I run a search now it claims it found no files at all matching my criteria even though I know such files exist, and other times it lists some or all of the files it found multiple times (yes, with multiple listings of a single file within a single folder). And when it says it found results now, too, some of the files it lists appear in blue rather than the customary black.

Why is it doing this (i.e. what did I unwittingly do to screw things up ), and more importantly how do I make things right again? If it matters, I actually work on a few different computers, all of which are equipped with Windows XP Professional but only some of which I regularly update; the one I've noticed all the problems in is a laptop not readily connected to the internet that accordingly doesn't get updated regularly, and that only interacts with the other computers by way of files I swap around via a flash drive).

Many thanks in advance for any thoughtful, complete replies I receive!

Hello friends,
-I am used to installing windows on the M5A99X EVO but it looks to be a whole different thing when it comes to the M5A99FX PRO R2.0.
-I am trying to install windows 7 Professional 64-bit OEM DVD with a M5A99FX PRO R2.0 motherboard onto a Samsung EVO 1tb SSD. this is a AMD Computer not Intel. the CPU for this build is the AMD FX-9590. the bios is up to date with Bios #2501
-I tried to install windows 7 professional 64-Bit OEM with the legacy settings and non-UEFI in the bios because I couldn't get the installation drive seen and ask to boot from the DVD. with legacy settings i was able to install windows but as soon as i tried to install SP1 the computer Blue Screened with code: 0X000000F4. and i wasn't logged on for very long.
-I wrote a forum post in Asus ROG and was directed here to these forums.
after trying to read some of the forums here it was difficult to know what is the proper settings and what else is required to get the computer to operate properly. some say to enable some say to have it disabled etc. It says to disable secure boot but in the bios of the ASUS M5A99FX PRO R2.0 there is no enable or disable option. I put it into UEFI mode and put CSM into auto and tried to boot both from the UEFI optical drive option and the non-UEFI optical drive option. and both times it would load the windows files for installation and as soon as it got to the starting windows splash screen the computer would completely shut off and then restart.

You should be able to install Windows 7/8/10 with the default UEFI firmware (BIOS) settings.

Asus UEFI setups allow for both UEFI and Legacy BIOS (aka CSM) booting to be enabled. In that case, Windows 7 can normally be booted with the motherboard's Secure Boot feature enabled as well, but without actually using it.

CSM (Compatibility Support Module) > Launch CSM
- [Auto]: The system automatically detects the bootable devices and the add-on devices.
- [Enabled]: For better compatibility, enable the CSM to fully support the non-UEFI driver add-on devices or the Windows UEFI mode.
- [Disabled]: Disable the CSM to fully support the Windows Security Update and Security Boot.

Secure Boot > OS Type
- [Windows UEFI Mode]: Execute the Microsoft Secure Boot check. Only select this option when booting on Windows UEFI mode or other Microsoft Secure Boot compliant OS.
- [Other OS]: Get the optimized function when booting on Windows non-UEFI mode, Windows Vista/XP, or other Microsoft Secure Boot non-compliant OS.
