Network File Copies and Moves Crash File Explorer

Q: Network File Copies and Moves Crash File Explorer

Everytime I try to move or copy any files from a mapped network share, it crashes out the file explorer. Anyone have any ideas on what can be causing this? The OS is Windows 10 Pro, the network share is on a Synology NAS box.

Thank you

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi Everyone,
This may be a really stupid question, but I can't find the answer anywhere. When you right click on a file/folder and send to: say My Documents, does it make a copy of the file/folder and send to My Documents or does it MOVE the actual file?? It looks like it just makes a copy, is this correct? To move a file/folder can you only use the file & folder Tasks column? If you send to: E drive (flash drive) I assume it just makes a copy and does not move the original. Right or wrong? Thanks a lot. Aliza

I have a Linksys Wireless B router. I have two computers hardwired into the router and not using wireless. Last month when I copied my Outlook file from one to the other it seemed like it took about 1 minute. The size has hardly changed but now it is taking over 9 minutes which is slightly over a meg per second. I realize it is unrealistic to expect 100 mbps for a hardwired connection but does anyone have any idea why it is so slow?

Hi. So I just started my computer up this morning and noticed that I couldn't open file explorer at all. I click the button on my taskbar, but when the window pops up, it's blank and then it crashes. My whole screen turns the color of my tile screen (Orange) and then it takes me back to my desktop. I've tried opening file explorer other ways, but nothing works. I created a .dmp file using process explorer, but I need help reading and understanding it. I uploaded it to my SkyDrive. Here is the link: https://onedrive.live.com/redir?resi...A7C024BB%21984 I just put it in the minidumps folder. It's called explorer.dmp

I would greatly appreciate it if any of you guys could help me. This is a big problem.

Thanks.
-Justin

A:File explorer crash and reset

explorer.dmp contains references to windows file errors (no 3rd party files mentioned).
We'll need this stuff (even though you're not mentioning BSOD's): Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) Posting Instructions

While waiting, try:
1) DISM - Fixing Component Store Corruption in Windows 8
2) then try SFC.EXE /SCANNOW from an elevated (Run as administrator) Command Prompt
3) then try this free tool: ShellExView - Shell Extension Manager For Windows Use it to disable all 3rd party (non-Microsoft) shell extensions. Then reboot and see if that fixes things.

A:Right click a file = explorer crash

Any system restore points before this happened ? Revert changes made from utility program, could be due to a shell extension software puts in your context menu when you right click. CCleaner can check extensions if have it, if not CCleaner - PC Optimization and Cleaning - Free Download
Go to Tools menu, startup at top select Context Menu see what is in the list, select and disable any third party extensions.
Most of time reason for this when you right click and explorer crashes it's due to a shell extension.

If i select no then everything (taskbar, desktop) disappears for few seconds and all is then restored normally but open explorer folders go.

Hi Welcome to SF,

I guess the problem is related to the Context Menu. Download the ShellExView is an excellent tool to view and manage all installed shell extensions. The rule is to disable non-Microsoft context menu handlers *one-by-one* and verify if the problem is solved. If disabling one does not solve the problem, undo the disabled item and disable the next non-Microsoft handler. Do the same until the problem is solved and finally identify the culprit. Scroll right to see the Company Name column in ShellExView.

Hope this helps

Hi Guys,

I have encountered this problem (in thread line) for the past 3-5 days and I have come no closer to any solution during that period of time.

Basically, as soon as I left click or right click on a file in Windows Explorer it will crash. My Windows icon in the bottom left has also stopped working and I cannot ask Cortana anything (not that I did anyway...).

None of the advanced boot options work either (system restore, clean install etc...).

Apologies if that is somewhat vague, and thanks in advance for any assistance.

A:File Explorer crash when selecting files

Hi, I think you need to try to repair Windows.

Let's start by opening an admin command prompt
Windows key + X, click Command Prompt (admin)

Type
chkdsk C: /F
and your PC shold reboot and run the command.
Check it reports everything is ok or fixed.

If so (else post back):

Open an admin command prompt
Windows key + X, click Command Prompt (admin)
Type
SFC /Scannow
and post back the results.
(This will attempt to refresh any corrupt system files).

These are quite routine, safe procedures.

Hi

I have recently installed SP2 on XP and installed plenty of new spyware progs and AVG anti-virus.

Since installing the service pack I have been unable to right-click on any file in Windows explorer , the window freezes and just disappears.
I usually get a DrWatson debugger window after this happens, I have read up about this and cant get a fix. My scans come back with nothing.
I have removed any s/w I wasnt using
I ran registry cleanup programs

There is one thing I am unable to remove from add/remove programs OR delete from file system and that is a folder called ebates_moemoney_maker. I tried removing it from cmd window but I didnt have the permissions. In add/remove programs window it does not show any properties like size etc and when I click on remove it does nothing. The spyware programs pick it up but never delete it . I am unsure whether this has anything to do with my problem with Windows explorer but would like to get it sorted

Here is my Hijack this scan - can anyone spot anything , any help MUCH appreciated !

Thanks

Okay Hey guys,

I guess I will first talk about my situations:

1. When I turn on my pc and log on... I get error files missing warning for
two .dll files:
wvUkLBsQ.dll
dkhstima.dll

When I ran DSS, these two .dll files were underneath the running
processes section as you will notice in the log I have posted.
Now I am assuming these are viruses or corrupt files any clue as
to getting rid of the error message. Virus is being the most likely cause
because these .dll supposedly belong in a temp document and from my
knowledge its odd for .dll files to belong in a temp document. Saying that
I cannot seem to find this temp folder. maybe im just blind.

2. Now my main problem, rather irratating to be honest. When runing
IE 7, my windows explorer seems to crash.

I understand I had a virtumonde virus something like that.
That spybot search and destroy removed. Vitumonde caused loads of
annoying pop ups based on my surfing habits. Once spybot removed it
windows explorer began crashing assuming virtumonde or some virus
removed by spybot is trying to run but due to files missing it is unable to
run succesfuly causing the explorer window to crash.

A:Windows explorer crash while opening folders/file

It may be related to some Explorer extension that was installed and crashing on network drives? Try disabling installed programs "shell integration" as much as you can to test.

Also, you probably want to install Windows 7 Service Pack 1, as it might fix something related to this crash, in addition to some other minor bugfixes.

The computer again worked fine for the first few days, but this time, the problem started when the wifi adapter started malfunctioning. Every time I click or hover over the network connections button, it is crashing the file explorer (nttdll.dll). I had been slowly installing windows updates by year ( I got up to 2013) and installed the minimum programs needed to use my computer and made regular restore points after every years updates because I was weary. However, looking back now, system restore claims that no restore points have been created. I'm addition, running sfc yielded unrepairable errors again, and I am completely out of ideas and am wondering if it's a hardware issue... Please help!

Fix your problem by using refresh my PC options. Click or tap on Settings > Change PC Settings > Update and Recovery.

Then open the recovery option and then select get started and refresh your PC without affecting your files. This re-installs windows without trashing your data. As an extra precaution, make sure your data is backed up.

Hi,
I have a XP Home SP2 computer and whenever you try to delete/rename/create anything using explorer explorer crashes giving the send and dont send dialog. Meaning i cant do anything. I can use the command prompt to do these tasks however, so i dont think its a hard disk issue. I have tried all of the above in safe mode under the administrator and a normal user and i still get the errors. I have also disabled all non-MS services and all unnecessary startup entries and the problem still occurs. The computer runs Zonealarm Security Suite (Firewall, Anti-virus, Anti-spyware etc...) and Adaware se personal, both which turn up no viruses or spyware apart from the occasonal cookie. So i dont think that it is a virus or spyware infection. This behavior occurs over all system files. Does anyone have any suggestions before i have to reinstall XP?

I will post a hijack this! log if required..

Considering the Shadow Copy option available starting from Windows Vista Ultimate/Business/Enterprise, all files on the disk drive have a copy in Shadow Copies.

How can we remove the System Restore copy of a file from the disk drive, using the Volume Shadow Copy Service, and ensure this System Restore copy is also removed when the file is deleted from the disk?

Is there any other possibility to do this except the Volume Shadow Copy Service, and if yes, which one (without removing the entire System Restore)? If there isn't, how can it be done?

From what I understand, you would have to turn off System Protection to get rid of the previous versions of all files. There isn't a way to just get rid of the previous versions of certain files.

Hi, all,

I recently got a new computer with Windows7, coming from a Windows XP system.

I would like to find a solution to an annoying Windows 7 behavior (after a thorough session of Googling)...

When I copy/paste a file on my desktop into a folder located elsewhere on my desktop, the copied file's icon moves so that it is located where the folder icon was, and the folder jumps down so that it ends up below the file icon.

To clarify - I often work with several files at a time, making modifications to each one. To keep track of the files I've modified, I arrange them in groups on my desktop. Often I will want to transfer the modified files to my other computer. I usually create a temporary folder on the desktop to hold copies of the modified files.

If I right-click a file (or group of files), select copy, then right-click the folder and select paste, the file is copied into the folder as expected, but the icons for the copied files physically move across the desktop to end up immediately above receiving folder, which drops down to the "grid" position below.

If the receiving folder is not isolated (that is, it's surrounded by other icons), the file and folder both move to a location that allows the copied file's icon to be located above (or sometimes below) the folder.

Is this normal behavior for Windows 7?

Is it possible to "fix" the system so that copied files "stay put"?

Thanks!

A:Annoyance: file copied to folder on desktop moves!

In short - files don't really belong on the desktop.

Before the update I used to be able to see my Synology Diskstation and Humax Foxsat listed as Computers in File Exlorer when selecting Network, I could then get a full list of folders on each device and files could be easily transfered between them. Neither device is now listed under Computers.

They still appear in File Explorer on my other Windows 8.1 PC under Computer.

How do I get them to appear under Computers again?

A:File Explorer not showing all computers on network

Router is the first place to start looking. What is the manufacturer & model of the router? Are you sure that LLTD is enabled in Services? Can you ping the other computers from the Command Window?

It is possible that the Synology is also causing the issue. Never rule out anything. Any devices should show up under Network. You can also use the following website to help make sure you are not forgetting anything. EZLAN.NET.

I have been having issues with my WD MyCloud NAS not showing up under Network on the left navigation pane of File Explorer. I am able to access the NAS by entering the host name (\\WDMYCLOUD) in the address bar in File Explorer. I was able to find a solution that fixes this and makes my NAS appear in Network as expected. The solution involved running Command Prompt as Admin, executing some commands, then restarting the computer.

What I would like to do is automate this process by creating a batch file that will:

Open Command Prompt as AdminAutomatically enter specific commandsClose Command PromptRestart the computer

The problem is I don't know anything about how to code batch files in order to accomplish this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi there
I'm not an expert at these things but this should work.

1) open a text file with notepad
2) enter your commands line by line. one command per line
3) save file with suffix .bat or .cmd
4) use file explorer to get to the file.
5) double click on it to see if it works (cmd / bat extensions should be interpreted by Windows as command type of stuff).
6) if it works right mouse vlick against the file in file explorer
7) set send to desktop (create short cut)
8) now you've got a desktop application when you want to run it - just double click the desktop short cut you created.

Note - to run by default in Administrator mode I think in the propertie... Read more

I have a problem that has plagued me since the start of the use of Windows 7! NEVER been a problem on ANY XP machines, I've ONLY seen this on machines running Windows 7.

I am the kind of guy that backs up files to multiple locations, I usually have 5+ copies of the same file and I RARELY delete things thinking I may need it later

but at random occasions, I have where a media file (pictures, music, video, etc) mysteriously disappear from my computer, not just that, but from ALL drives that the file is on that is currently on a Windows 7 computer, this ONLY happens with files that are considered digital media, like pictures and music and stuff in that category. NEVER with EXEs or any other thing not digital media.

would could be the issue here???

A:ALL copies of a file from ALL drives randomly disappear!!

Deletion across the board doesn't seem possible unless your setup is unusual. Why not backup to 1 external media and put the really important stuff on a free version of The Cloud?

I am trying to clean up some of my folders but every time I delete a file it creates a copy of it in that very same folder. In playing around trying to get rid of these unwanted files, I have over 300 copies of one file. How do I get rid of these files for good, and how do I set up my computer to NOT make a copy of files I am deleting?

Hello,
I am finding that when I try moving an image file from one directory to another in Windows 8.1, I am getting another copy of the same image created in the destination folder which has a new number in that file name. For example: if I have IMG_1234.jpg in one folder and I move the same image from another folder into one where that image is already ( too many images to move to remember) I get the same image, but it would now be named IMG_2345.jpg. Rather than tell me that that file already exists and ask if I would like to overwrite it.
I am finding this to be both confusing and frustrating at the same time, so I would be grateful if anyone can tell me why this is happening.

Many Thanks in advance!

Not sure exactly which forum is best suited for this, but I am using win7 Starter, soooo...

Hi All,

The past few weeks my netbook has started locking up and needing the battery removed to get it started again. It most often happens in Firefox when writing to the HHD, but not always.

I have cloned the HDD to a new Seagate and installed that and the problem continues, so it is not the HDD. I have all current updates for everything here.

So, I am thinking it might be one of two things. I have picked up a Virus/Trojan/Worm or it is a hardware fault.

I am thinking of buying a new netbook and give up on this one. If I do that, and it is a Virus/Trojan/Worm, there is a good risk of transferring it over to the new netbook when I copy a bunch of data files from my backup USB HDD.

Any thoughts on how I can copy stuff to the new netbook without risk of bringing malicious stuff with them?

I am thinking maybe copy the files to a Cloud Account then copy from there back to the new netbook. The thinking there is that unless the actual files contain the Virus etc, any other sectors etc on the backup HDD that may contain the Virus code will not be transferred.

Thanks for any and all practical suggestions.

Hi,
Why not get the possibility of virus etc looked at here at TSG? Guide here: http://forums.techguy.org/virus-other-malware-removal/943214-everyone-must-read-before-posting.html

Please be patient though if you follow that route - lots of requests but not that many experts to go round.

Hope this helps?

I am running WinXP home and use Zone Alarm, Ad-Aware, Spybot, and Microsoft's spy ware. I reinstalled Windows a few months back and foolishly failed to install my protection before I connected to the web. During that time I downloaded the latest Netscape browser and with it I got a weather service program I didn't ask for that deluged me with dire warnings of doom if I didn't go immediately to certain web sites and download the protective software on those sites. I shut off Windows messenger service and got rid of the warnings but could find no way to get rid of he program. I also found that certain files were disappearing from my computer or showing up at odd places. Yesterday I tried to print a Works document that contained an image. I couldn't fine the file in its usual place but found it in the recycle bin. The image was gone and I couldn't find a way to reinsert the image. The file comes up on Wordpad instead of Works. The big thing is that when I opened the recycle bin there are thousands of copies of files from my computer. The files just keep coming and coming.

This has got to be a virus of some kind but I have no idea how to deal with it. Help!!!!!

In File Explorer-Network I sometimes see a router that is not mine. It is the TL-WDR3600.
It shows no IP-address, and it is apparently not on my network (Sunshine1).
I sometimes see a cell phone that is not mine either.
I have MAC filtering in my wireless router, and that MAC-address is not included.

Any idea what is going on here?

A:Alien wireless router in File Explorer-Network

First off stop using MAC filtering. It does nothing. It is a false sense of security. As for the TP-Link router. You do not have a SamKnow's "Whitebox" on your network per chance? The TL-WDR3600 is the newer version of "Whitebox" that Sam Knows is using to monitor network connections.

I am using outlook express as my default email app. When ever I send an email there is a strange file created on my desktop named ~ It has no extensions or anything. I opened the file in a text editor, and it seems to be related to my address book, because I can see email and names that are in my address book. Does anyone know what exactly this file is? or how I can stop it from being copied to my desktop?

Don't worry about the ~ file. Your computer just made a back up of your address book. I have that file on all my computers.

I'm looking for a program for Windows 7 which will scan my computer and enable me to identify multiple copies of the same file on my system. Once identified, it will either prompt me to delete the extra copies or do it for me automatically. Thanks.

Hello ESL,

Duplicate cleaner and Duplicate & Same Files Searcher are a couple of good free programs to find duplicate files with. You might give them a try to see how they may work for you.

Ever since upgrading to Windows 8.1 (with and without Update 1) from Windows 8, the File Explorer has new quirk in its behavior that drives me crazy. My computer is on a domain and has a mixture of DFS drives and the older network drives mounted to drive
letters. Whenever I leave File Explorer showing either a DFS or network drive, after a few minutes of inactivity, it will close. I then have to reopen it and find the folder again. If I switch away from the File Explorer to go to something else, many
times when I go to switch back to File Explorer only to find it has closed. This is really annoying. No error message, it just closes. The computers with Windows 7 and older don't do this. And Windows 8 did not do this. Both my desktop computer and
my Surface Pro, both 8.1 Update 1 do this. My servers are Windows 2008 R2.
Is there any reason for this? Or is there any registry hack or setting that controls this behavior?
Thanks, Carl

A:Windows 8.1 File Explorer unexpectedly closes when on a network drive.

We already use GPO, but from what you say, it may be worthwhile to check if we have any manually applied drive mapping. I'll give that a try.
Thanks, Carl

Please check if your GPO drive mapping is set to "Replace". If so try changing it to Update?

Hi,
I am facing an issue with a user where they are unable to keep a window of File Explorer open when on a network drive. It will stay open for a short period of time and then close.

When browsing on the local machine or  directly to the share via the UNC path the window will stay open.

Here is a link which shows the issue in which I am facing. But we are using Server 2012 as opposed to 2008 r2.

https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/office/en-US/e97da3d3-6201-4b32-96f2-bcb7099a37e9/windows-81-file-explorer-unexpectedly-closes-when-on-a-network-drive?forum=w8itpronetworking
The fix which was highlighted on the above link seems to already be in place. Yet the issue is still occurring.

Is there any reason as to why this could be happening? There seems to be nothing been mentioned in Event Logs.

The "standard" call. Perhaps if you had used the term "incremental backup" it might have rung a bell. Instead of $149, buy a 3rd party backup ap that will work properly and cost a lot less.

I just downloaded all of the Google Web Fonts and they were each downloaded into their respected folders, so instead of clicking on folder after folder and right clicking after right clicking and finally installing each and every font;

How can I create a command prompt (batch) file so the prompt can search the main folder where all the font folders are, grab any and all TrueType Font files and move or copy them into another single folder?

A:Custom batch file that copies font files to another folder?

It seems like it would be easier to search by the TTF file extension.

Copy the results where you want them.

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to install Windows XP Pro SP3 fresh from a CD-rom onto an old machine my buddy put together for me years ago. I've already zeroed out, and formatted the (1) WD 500GB hard drive using NTFS.(The hard drive is brand new also.)

I put in the CD, and the Windows Setup portion completes. The machine then restarts, shows my bios boot screen, I hit F1, then gives me the "Press any key to boot from CD....." message, and just sits there. It won't start the GUI portion of the setup. If I do press a key and boot from the CD, it just starts the Windows Setup portion of the install from scratch.

I've re-tried the install probably 10 times now, and it just hangs at the "Press any key to boot from CD....." screen every time the install reboots after the Windows Setup portion.

What could be going wrong, I've installed Windows XP Pro many times now and never had a problem.(Guess I'm lucky... until now.)

Here's what I've done so far:
Installed HDD
Ran "write zeros to drive" from WD Diag. CD
Formatted HDD to NTFS
Windows setup ran and copied files
Reboot
Sits at "Press any key to boot from CD....."

Asus CUSL2-C bios rev. 1009
Pentium III 466 mhz
512MB PC133 SDRAM
500GB WD EIDE HDD

That's all I know of the top of my head as I'm not at home, if you need more info please let me know. Thanks in advance.
