Vista folder options setting issue

Q: Vista folder options setting issue

After using the RTM build for about a week with no issues, the option to open a folder in the same window when clicked, is no longer working properly.

Now, when clicked, all folders are opening up in a new window and this is very annoying! I havent changed any settings and the folder options are still set correctly. I have tried changing the folder options to see if it would change this behaviour but it did not. What is really strange is that this also happened on my first install of Vista RTM before reinstalling this copy, after about the same time of usage-about 1 week.

Has anybody ran into this or know what is happening? I havent installed any new hardware or software and I havent tried any repairs or recovery yet. I wanted to ask before I started poking around and making any changes in the OS.

Preferred Solution: Vista folder options setting issue

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Try this link. It's really simple, the extra is just if the quick merge option doesn't work, it's safe also. I have used it twice, I need to do a reinstall. It fixed alot of my problems with folder options.

new to Windows 7

.windows 7.fresh out of the box, first time being turned on, whats the VERY first step towards having the same options applied to ALL folders and seeing the same options the second/third time you use windows explorer?

All previous versions gave us a list of steps to set folder options......we'd go through the steps.....youre options might be fine ...........now, but the next time you use windows explorer, your options are......not there.
Nobody ever knew how to permanently set folder options in all previous windows versions.

is it the same with windows 7

do we still have to change options on each folder that we need to?
each time we use that folder?

I haven't yet tried and I'm not touchin' folder options untill i see what you folks have to say.

Hi All,

I have had many problems since I installed Vista Ultimate, both major and minor. I have solved some and am still working on others. I won't try to adress them all now. The problem with folder view settings is one of the most aggravating, though not operationally significant. Still, it does CONSTANTLY Piss Me Off. Pardon my language, but it IS appropriately descriptive. Regardless of whatever settings I choose, the next time I go to that folder or any other, they have reverted to some set of system defaults, which I CAN'T CHANGE. Several I don't use and some I don't want or actually get in the way of what I want to do, such as "AutoArrange". (If I ever meet the person who invented "AutoArrange" I will probably be arrested for assault.)

Does ANYONE know what I can do to set my folders the way I want them and retain the settings?

Here's my problem with Vista.

When I go into any folder for the first time, it comes up with a set of random things to sort the folders by, and random view settings.

I want every folder to have the "details" view by default. Also, I want the tabs "Type", "Size", and "Date Modified" that I can click on to sort these, with "Type" being the default selected one.

This is how I had things in WinXP. All I had to do was click "Apply to folders" in the folder options. I do this in Vista, also, I do have "Remember each folder's view settings" checked. Yet it makes up a random set of view settings for any folder I haven't manually set myself.

So, how do I make Windows Vista stop coming up with random view settings for folders? When I click on a folder of pictures I still want it in "Details" view, with "Type", "Size", and "Date Modified" tabs. With "Type" selected as the default to sort by.

Yet, it appears in "Large Icons" view, with "Date Taken", "Tags", "Size", and "Rating" as the only sort by options.

How do I stop this madness?

After having a go at this my self to see if I could come up with a fix I found my PC doing the same thing, So after a bit of a google crawl I found this post - Hope it helps =)

Is there any way to prevent Vista from automatically alphabetize files as you add them to folders? I really do not like that feature, at all.

Also, in XP you can open a folder, set it's view (like list view with status bar) and you can go to folder options and "apply to all folders" and it will change every folder's view. I cannot for the life of me get this to work in Vista. Can someone please tell me what to do to fix this?

A:Folder Options In Vista

Someone posted a link to help with the second part, said he used it and it worked (some registry settings and resettings mostly). It might have been in the All other software archives if not the Vista OS one. Three of my 4 Vista systems do the same thing as they continue not aging well at all, but I've stopped trying to fight the decay and just hope Windows 7 is a cureall.

I'll see if I can search the achives for the link and post it if I find it.

Running Win2K

Here are the issues at hand:

C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32 is no longer visible to the GUI.

Other hidden and system files show up in explorer, except for SYSTEM32. This is not, I repeat, a simple View/Folder Options issue as the Read Only/Hidden/System files are set to viewable.

Can't access SYSTEM32 through RUN, but can manually access it through DOS (CD system32).

Will not find specific files known to reside in System32 using Windows Search function.

Will scan in SYSTEM32 using AdAware, Sophos, SpyDoctor, but will not find anything out of the ordinary.

While in DOS:

Tried to do ATTRIB on the folder through the command prompt, but it cannot locate it, nor will it list any files or extensions. (Tried attrib *.exe while in SYSTEM32, but could not list any files)

Can't locate the directory from C:\WINNT\ through the good old DIR command either.

This seems like a pretty bad one. Sygate Personal Firewall Pro is not detecting any out of the norm activity (Incoming/Outgoing Permissions only granted to NTOSKRNL.EXE, IEXPLORER.)

I've seen only a very few amount of people with these same exact problems pop up only within this past week. I haven't seen any resolutions to this yet.

Hi! So on my 2 month old laptop which ive never had any problems with, the other day i started it up to find when my sidebar started to load, i got a message saying

"Settings.ini is being used by another process. Close the other program and then click Retry, or click Cancel to exit Sidebar."

I've searched through various forums which delegated to edit the account controls or run as admin, neither of which have worked for me.

In addition to this, nearly every application i open tells me the file is corrupted, even programs i may have installed literally 2 seconds ago...i downloaded a registry cleaning software and it told me it was corrupted before i even opened it. It also say that C:\Users\Public\Desktop folder is corrupted which has caused some funky things on my desktop, like loss of icons, and various programs that i didnt think were related to not work properly.

Please, any help would be greatly appreciated, ive spent hours and hours trying to find a solution buried in the web out there, and have had no luck at all...

Hopefully I am in the correct forum but sincere apologies if I am not. Apologies also for the length of the post but I wanted to explain in as much detail as possible. I have looked through the ten pages in this forum with similar questions but none meet my exact problem unfortunately.

Basic problem is with administrator permissions as described below using Vista SP2 Home Basic with all updates. This is my personal home PC with just one account used by me alone and I have full administrator privileges.

I immediately back-up any files I have opened and amended to a usb pen drive. In addition, every evening I back-up every file I have accessed during that day to an external portable hard drive via usb connection.

When using the usb pen drive option I simply right click the file and then 'send to' the relevant usb pen drive. No problem at all and it works instantly. If I want to send a file from the pen drive to the PC or delete a file from the pen drive, that too works instantly. However when I try and do the same to my external hard drive i.e. right click and 'send to' the portable hard drive from my PC I cannot do it with the same ease.

Firstly I get the on screen message 'Destination folder access denied. You'll need administrator permission to copy to this folder' (the 'folder' is in fact the external drive). I then choose the 'continue' option to be met by a second screen saying 'Windows needs your permission to continue'. I choose the 'ok' option and the file is se... Read more

I am new to Vista having just purchased a laptop with Vista Home Premium running on it. As a long time user of Windows XP, I have encounterd a Vista issue that perpelexes me.

From my days with XP, I am quite used to access files in most system folders, to check on them or occasionly even modify them - for example changing the Startup layout.

However, in Vista, I am unable to access such directories as "Application data" or "Local Settings" even while using my administrator account. These aand other inaccessible directories have a unique icon with an arrow running through it, as if they were shortcut files. This suggests that they are somehow special to Vista.

My question is whether these files are really unacessable to all users with even the highest security privleges, or have I configured something wrong in Vista's rather "curious" security system?

Any suggestions or commnts are most welcome.

All other users syncing to the same server are fine.

I've disabled Indexing, but that did not take care of it.
I've also googled the heck out of this. Nothing worked.

If I go to the actual server location and sync from there, it works without issue, but not the other way. There's a similar error for every created file or folder.

My laptop has a built in SD card reader.  I just installed Windows 7 x64 Ultimate Edition and have installed all available Window updates.
When I go to:
Control Panel -> Folder Options -> View "tab"
and uncheck the box for "Hide empty drives in the Computer folder", the SD card reader still does not appear when I go into the Computer folder.
I have also tried going into the registry:
to change:
from 1 to 0, but that does not work either.
Can someone please help me get my SD card reader to appear in the Computer folder even when there is no card inserted into it?

A:Not working: Folder Options -> View -> Hide empty drives in the Computer folder

The card readers on my desktop computer (one connected internally via a USB header on the motherboard), one on my monitor and one on my printer all work the way they should.  When "Hide empty drives in the Computer folder" is checked, none
of them are visible in the Computer folder.  When "Hide empty drives in the Computer folder" is unchecked, they all become visible.
The card reader in my laptop is connected internally via micro-USB, but it's different.  It does not actually appear in the Device Manager until a card is inserted into it.
That's probably why the "Hide empty drives in the Computer folder" does not work with my laptop's card reader.

Hi. I have been Googling this, but haven't been able to find the information I need. Maybe someone can help here?

I want the option to open a DVD/CD in Windows Explorer to show on the Autoplay option window that appears when I insert a disc into the drive. I am asked every time I put in a disc, which is what I want; the option is there in the configuration settings, but it doesn't appear in the autoplay window.. See screenshots.

I can remove the Open in Windows Media Player option if only four items will show (but how??)

I just discovered that if I insert a DVD-RW with video files on it, I get the above 'annoyance'. If the same DVD-RW has jpegs on it, I get a different autoplay window open, with different options (including 'Open with Windows Explorer)> I'd thought (clearly wrongly) the action was media dependent, not as to what was on the disc.

So how do I get the Windows Explorer option for a disc with .VOB files on it?

Thanks again.

As I bought my laptop when I was living abroad, it has an American (I suppose) style keyboard, where (for example) the number keys 1 to 5 in Caps are marked (and produce the symbols) ! @ # $ %. Given that the laptop sits on the desk mostly, I find it a lot easier when doing emails or whatever to use a USB keyboard on my lap, but this has a UK layout, where the same keys in Caps are marked ! I don't suppose there is any way to get Windows to recognise the two different keyboard layouts, so that the USB one produces the symbols depicted on the keys? Can I remap it without affecting the laptop one? Can't work out how, if so.

I recently picked up a old HP psc 2510 photosmart all-in-one printer at a yard sale for 10 bucks in great condition. Problem is, it was missing all documentation and driver CD. Fortunately, HP included "in-OS" drivers for Win 7, so I was able to set it up over USB very easily. But now I'm trying to get it up and running with wireless printing, which it supports on XP, but isn't perfectly ported to 7.

Following the advice from the 4th comment on Re: HP PSC 2510 Photostmart drivers for WIndows 7 - Page 4 - HP Support Forum, I was able to connect to it via my wifi network when I plug an Ethernet cable into the printer.

Now, this works, but being a huge nerd, I think it'd be even better if I could set the printer up to be completely wireless. I'm not much of an expert on the finer workings of wireless connections, but I think it's possible to do this with an ad hoc netwrok. But I can't find any instructions for doing this on 7. Closest thing I found was this page with instructionsfor XP, which I was unable to follow on 7.

Since the printer has an on-screen option to enable or disable the "wireless radio" which can only be turned on when the ethernet cable is unplugged, I assume this functionality is to broadcast the "hpsetup" ad hoc network from the printer without it being connected to a router (since I don't think it can connect to an actual wifi network wirelessly; but if it can, it'd be great to know how to do that too!). But even when I do... Read more

It seems that with the linkout you have provided with instructions
for setting this up in XP describes setting up WEP encryption connection
through the HP setup page. Wondering if the device you are making the
ethernet connection to is handing the printer an IP by checking that option in
the setup through Win7 (Automatically obtain IP address therefore it should) but check if the router is also using
WEP encyption which whilst reading the documentation seemed to be required for the printer.

Is that making sense! I'd start with that first

In Network Connections, right-click Local Area Connection, and then click Properties.
In Local Area Network Connection Properties, click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and then click Properties.
In Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties, click Advanced, and then click the DNS tab.
There are two options at the bottom of the dialog box.
Register this connectionís addresses in DNS
Use this connectionís DNS suffix in DNS registration
Is there any way to set these two options with Registry entries or by scripting ?

I need to register a dll using regsvr32 and set identical options for MS Word and MS Access for 9 users (with user permissions) on 10 computers running XP pro. All users are on a domain on a server running SBS 2003. Is there an easier way than changing each user to administrator privledges, register the dll, change the user back to user privledges, set the options in Word and Access and do this 90 times?

In Windows 8.1, I need comma as a decimal symbol. However, after restart it changes to dot and I need to reset it and restart all the programs. It is annoying. In Region settings, input method, Welcome, User setting etc. are the same language/region (Slovak).
Is there registry key that would prevent OS changing the settings after restart? The default settings are correct, so I do not understand where does the change come from. After OS installation I used different system language (English) for a time, because
it is easier for me to do setup in English, so maybe that is the reason. Thank you.

I was just changing some folder icons in Folder Options>File Types and now when I click on a folder it opens in OneNote!

I went to File Types>File Folder>Advanced and under the Actions it reads:
Add to VLC
Lock folder with Folder Lock
Open as Notebook in OneNote
Play with VLC

The first two of the 3 check boxes underneath are ticked. I have no idea what the default action was before, but I don't see anything resembling simply open a folder. Can anyone help me reset the default action or create a new one to open the folder?

Thanks very much.

How can I get all my Folders to open in the same View, like Details? They seem to be opening all different at this time.

Thank You

A:Folder Options

Set one folder the way that you want it to look and then use folder options to "apply to folders":

If the other folders still do not look right, try these steps...
Folder View Settings - Reset All to Default
...and the repeat the "apply to folder" step again.
