"Welcome to Setup" screen freeze/keyboard lockup

Q: "Welcome to Setup" screen freeze/keyboard lockup

I recently purchased an entire computer worth of parts from newegg, and have run into a snag during windows installation. (I have built this set up for a friend before and had no probs)

i completed the computer and went to install windows, to my joy the computer booted up on its first try, and appeard to be succsesfully starting up the windows xp setup. when it get to loading up all the drivers nessissary for windows to install and the status bar at the bottom says starting windows, the screen goes black for a second, then goes to the screen that says "windows installations, Press "Continue" to begin, "r" for repare.. blah, blah.. but the keyboard appears to lockup and become unresponcive.. cant even tun off/on capps lock or numlock.

thought it might be the keyboard so i borowed a friends... still froze. Ive been scowering the net for ppl w/ simallar issues but alas i havent been able to find anything close. My guesses could be, The mobo itself possibly... the dvd drive i'm useing/or the ribbon (which honestly wouldnt make much sence.. to me anyway) Or the thing i suspect also would be that i need to instal raid drivers.. this to would be odd as i mentiond before that using basically the exact same hardware and OS for my friend, and he didnt need to intall 3rd party raid. ANY advice on this would be much appriciated.. Thanks for reading

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hey guys, my computer is messed up beyond belief. I'm going to explain the whole story to you, so bare with me.

How this all started:
Well, long story short, my motherboard shorted out and caused all sorts of problems. After taking the whole system out and putting it on a test bed (self built system) I was able to start up the system. However, it would not let me start windows no matter what I did. So i resorted to formatting the SSD it was installed on. I then tried to reinstall windows; this did not work. I had many people tell me it was my motherboard that shorted out (it touched the case while I was trying to power on) and I needed to replace it. So i warrantied it to ASUS and I got it back in the mail several weeks later. I put the system back together, tried to install windows, same problem persisted. It would freeze before I could install. I then did research and decided to boot the disk in Safe Mode. This worked! I proceeded through the first steps of installation and then it required my computer to boot. Upon rebooting, I was brought to the "setup is starting services screen". I waited for a good hour or so and nothing happened. I did some more research and decided to Boot into safe mode again only for it to tell me "install cannot proceed in safe mode". I then opened command prompt, while still in safe mode, and opened device manager. I closed all the drivers that had the yellow triangle next to them. I rebooted and successfully made it past... My boyfriends mother gave me a dell computer that she messed up by triing to reformatt it. I can't for the life of me figure out the password, she told me what it was but it doesn't work. I tried to run setup from the dell loading screen but it says "keyboard failure" but the keyboard works just fine to guess at passwords. It says the same thing if I try to run the boot menu and boot the OS from disc. Would someone please help me, I really need to get this computer up and running and my hands are tied....thanks.

have asked me to post on these forms. Can someone please help me with this? I am not able to move forward because the error is pretty generic and doesn't give any additional details.

OkOkOK, I have looked around forums but no definitive answer. On startup, it locks up when the Windows 7 (four color begin to mesh video screen) at start up, or it goes into screen that asks if I want to repair or load normally, then it locks up. Only after
various and multiple attempts to restart (using safe mode, repair, over and over) does it finally go through and start up properly. Sometimes repair disk (windows 7) works, but even it locks up sometimes and never acually repairs this problem.
I gives me the screen that says (blue and paraphrasing) This mcupdate.dll is the problem. Reinstall it or check with hardware or something along those lines. I have tried to search for this frign driver, but it doesnt show up.

What were you upgrading? Sounds like you need to do a clean install and possibly your cd or your cd drive is shot or just dirty.

Not sure if this is the right place to ask, but I'll give it a try!
For quite a while now, I've had issues with my screen. It seems as if the screen is sort of lagging, and only occurs while playing games. I only play Heroes of the Storm and Hearthstone, which both should be games who doesn't require too much from either my graphic card, my CPU nor anything else as far as I know. I've tried tweeking the settings in game, but nothing seems to help. Even overclocking my graphics card doesn't make any difference. I decided to start tracking with MSI Afterburner to see any changes in my fans (set to automatic), the temperature, CPU usage etc. The results were as follows:
Steady 60 degrees celsius on both GPU and CPU
Fans topping out at 15-45% capacity
CPU usage around 80-95%
RAM capping at about 3500
Core clocking properly (set to 1050/1500).
My specs:
PSU: Silver Power SP-S750 750W PSU
Graphics: XFX Radeon HD 7970 3GB GDDR5
Processor: AMD Phenom II X4 955
RAM: Kingston DDR3 1333MHz 4GB KIT CL9
Hard Drive: WD Caviar Green? 1TB SATA 2.0
Motherboard: MSI 870A-G54, Socket-AM3
Internet connection: ASUS PCE-AC68 AC1900 Wireless Adapter (internet connection is stable, have checked that, running a 100/100 connection)
Screen: BenQ 21,5" LCD T2210HD

Anyone got any clue of what could be going on? I regularly clean my computer with CCleaner as well as running scans with Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware. Will provide any additional information if needed.

Hi,
Intermittently, I have a problem where the boot up sequence freezes at the Starting Windows logo/screen. I then have to restart the PC, and the only way to get a clean start-up is if I go into the BIOS, and Save Changes and Reset (even if I don't make any changes). The PC might work then for another 1 or 20 boots before the problem recurs again. If I don't go into the BIOS and Save/Reset then it simply refreezes each time.
Have launched start-up repair but it always says it can't repair anything.
Have spoken many times with the retailer and changed a few overclock settings / voltages etc. etc. but no lasting improvement.
Anyone any idea what could be causing such an intermittent fault - and one cured for the next restart by entering/exiting the BIOS?

Specs are:
Intel Core i5 2500K Processor Overclocked to up to 4.8GHz
Asus P8Z68-V LE Motherboard

I've researched this forum's solutions for getting Vista to boot by itself, however after downloading EasyBCD I was only able to remove the "earlier version of windows" option, and for some reason I still keep getting "Microsoft XP Pro Installation" as well as "Microsoft Vista Ultimate." Vista works fine, I'm just trying to get the xp install option out of there. A little backstory might help:

I had to install Vista in the first place because my xp pro installation crashed, i didn't want to go back to home and whenever I tried to install pro again when it got to the partition screen no partitions would ever show up and after 3-4 sec I'd get a BSOD. So i reinstalled xp home, went to the bookstore and picked up the update version of vista ultimate.

I installed Vista and it works great. After a month of having to manually select it each time I restart my computer though, it's getting rather annoying. EasyBCD does not show the xp pro installation option in the bootloader, however it's still there whenever i restart.

Any suggestions?

After it restarts, it just stays on the "starting windows" screen and the windows logo never shows. It wa son there for hours. I restarted by pressing the restart button and it continued back on the step 2 and them same thing, restart and then continue later but now the screen is just stuck on the "starting windows" screen.

Hi,

I have had Windows 7 on my computer for over a month now, I have had no problems other than a Wireless networking adapter driver issue. However over the last couple of days the OS has been playing up, the main thing that has occured is a BSOD idicating a graphics problem. However earlier on today it finally gave up, now I am stuck. The Windows 7 repair system indicates no issue, and I cannot fix or upgrade the OS from the cd. I managed to get it to work fine in safe mode, with networking allowing me to download a update for my graphics card; still No success. So now I am completely stuck in Safe mode as the only working part of the computer, and I will only do a clean install as a last resort!

Hello,

I have had Win7 Pro x64 for well other a month now, working fine with no problems. Until I got a BSOD! it was indicating a graphics problem I have a GeForce 8500GT with a clean bill of health!, at first I didn't think it would be a problem, I was right at first everything worked fine, until I played company of heroes, the game slowed down and some of the game turned purple, then it froze! I was forced to manually shutdown the PC. Then on restart the PC booted ok but froze on the Windows 7 Starting logo. Again after 10 minutes was forced to give it the finger.

Attempts to repair
Used Win7 repair - detects nothing wrong with OS
Worked in Safe mode - Checked any new installs, etc. Didn't solve it
Forced to do a System restore - Didn't work, lost minidump files
Resit RAM and Graphics card - No effect
Thankfully my PC has a shared graphics chip with the motherboard, so I removed the 8500GT and plugged it into the onboard one. Everything worked fine. I deleted the drivers for the 8500GT, and started over. It boots fine without the drivers, and works until windows finds drivers, then after a restart it freezes again. By now my head is going to explode and my finger is killing me! So I go into safe mode and update the drivers from the nVidia website, and restart nothing again!

I have ran out of ideas, I think it isn't the card as it still functions, there must be an issue between Win7 and the Graphics drivers!

2011 Vaio laptop, windows 7, and that's all I know about the computer. It's my daughter's. Her infant son banged the keyboard, making the screen freeze. It then rebooted and got stuck on Start-up repair or something...I don't remember now, that was a few days ago. We left it for hours, but it didn't go any further. So I tried other remedies:
1. Removed battery and power cord and held power button for 30 seconds. No change.
2. Reboot in safe mode. It wouldn't even go into safe mode.
3. Rebooted to last good configuration. Still wouldn't boot.
4. Tried to run Windows 7 repair disc. Wouldn't go past the third step.
5. Removed the hard drive and replaced it with one known to be working, and it just blue-screened and died.

Now it doesn't even get to the startup repair screen. It is on a blue screen that says "Setup is starting". And it stays on that screen.
Hope someone can help!

So I ended up making a repair install of Windows 7 as suggested in this thread:

Need help resetting folder permissions

Bad idea. For some reason, it goes all the way through the install, or so I think, then I discover that it's rolling back the changes. It reboots and I notice a new option on the boot menu for rolling back Setup, which is the default one. So now the computer keeps booting that option and restarting as soon as the roll back screen has been show for a few seconds.

So I decide to choose the Windows 7 option instead, figuring I will try to reinstall again. Instead I get a screen saying Setup is installing services, and an error message saying "The computer restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected error."

So I've been reading tons of pages online and tried everything like disabling the floppy disk in the BIOS, running Windows in Safe Mode and then through a command prompt disabling some devices, and trying to upgrade from the DVD only to find out I can only do a clean install there.

Making a clean install is absolutely NOT an option. So since the installation saved all the old files, I overwrote the install files with the old files, but I'm still getting that screen. So I'm figuring that there is somewhere in the registry database, where I can tell it not to load install but instead boot directly into Windows. But where would I find that?

A:Disabling "Setup is starting services" screen

See if you can browse in to look for these files using this method from DVD: Copy & Paste - in Windows Recovery Console

C:\$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\Panther\setuperr.log
C:\$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\Panther\setupact.log
C:\$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\Panther\miglog.xml
C:\$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\Panther\setupapi\setupapi.dev.log
C:\$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\Panther\setupapi\setupapi.app.log
C:\$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\Panther\PreGatherPnPList.log
C:\$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\Panther\PostGatherPnPList.log

The last listing should be a clue to what's hanging the upgrade (Repair) install.

If necessary copy out your files as you'll likely have to reinstall, like it or not, since you deleted files which may be needed to complete hung Repair install.

I tried to reformat from the XP CD and from a boot disc floppy. Each time the process gets stuck at: Windows Setup. There is nothing else on the blue screen. It won't go past there to the agreement section...or anything else.

This system was a custom built computer, given to my mother-in-law about 3 years ago. The company has since gone out of business. It was built w/ XP Professional SP1 and has since been upgraded w/ SP2. Recently Outlook express stopped working properly and would shut itself down as soon as it was opened. Then the dial-up connection would connect but no internet explorer pages would load.

I thought I would just reformat and start over...but this process gets stuck very early. What can I do?

Running Windows 7 Enterprise, 32-bit, I keep getting random freezes which last about 20-30 seconds, then the system always recovers. Generally, the mouse still moves, streaming music in not interrupted, but I can't do anything during these micro-freezes. CTRL-ALT-DEL is non-responsive at first, then once the task manager comes up, everything returns to normal. No abnnormal CPU usage. I have updated all the latest drivers, and have tried rolling back various component drivers to test it. Unistalled Avast antivirus and went with MS Security Essentials, and even installed the KB2265716 hotfix which described my problem. No luck. I have overclocked this system for several years with XP, but just to be safe, I returned all setting to factory once my issues with W7 started. Still, no luck. Memtest okay. I did not have this issue for the first month of installing Windows 7. It has been about 2 months that I have had this problem. In addition, my screen goes black for a second (or more) from time to time. It is not the monitor. So it could be a video card issue. One more oddity, my power setting occasionally change on their own. The only one which does this is "turn the monitor off". It swithches to "20 minutes" every few days without me changing it. Event viewer shows nothing which helps troubleshoot any of these issues. I have not updated my bios to the latest, as I have read that people have had problems with the latest bios, and revision history really only de... Read more

I broke one of the "feet" on my old E-Machines PS/2 keyboard I have used for years and like. I also use one at work that's pretty close to the same layout. I am looking everywhere for a keyboard with a large "enter" and "backspace" I can't find one. I don't care if it's USB or PS/2 but hate the "flat" type that ship with computers these days you look at the key to hard and it presses. I have HUGE hands and like the "old style" keyboard that you have to press pretty hard on the keys (like an actual spring under them) Do any of you know of a specialty keyboard shop or somewhere else with a big selection? I have looked all over the internet on the "major" places. (i.e. Newegg, TigerDirect, BestBuy, Wal-Mart, etc...)

If anyone knows of a place that has "old style" keyboards please let me know. I may have to settle but for such a small purchase that I use so much, I'd like to get what I want and I can't be the only one with massive hands having these same issues. The world isn't made for us big guys.

Actually, PS2 is still in vogue on on most motherboards, and most local computer repair shops sell older KBs - maybe for more than they are worth, but they do.

I have an older KB that is PS/2 - I'll make a pic and post it if you want it.

This afternoon, all of a sudden, I couldn't log into Outlook, Gmail, enter an address in IE or use Google. Whenever I entered a "r" the "Run" box would appear and whenever I entered an "e" the search box would appear. Most of the letters worked OK but a lot of them brought up something else. This has never happened before. I tried using "System Restore" all the way back to 12/31 but that did not help. I have been running ESET NOD32 (it's 97% finished and although it hasn't found any virus infections, it has located numerous errors opening files.)

Then, all of sudden, the situation corrected itself and I was able to log into Outlook and Gmail and use Google.

Has anyone heard of this? l thought I would post this problem to see if there is anything I can do to correct the situation rather that hope that it corrects itself.

Thanks in advance for all suggestions/comments.

In Windows XP, fully updated, I have several folders full of mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

But all the figures in the "Duration" column appear to be in "hours" and "minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03", but what I want is "minutes" and "seconds".

Any thoughts as to how to change this?

Hi, when entering the safe mode menu, I can't use my keyboard. I just have to wait the 30 seconds until it boots normally. As a matter of fact, pressing F8 doesn't seem to be able ot get me into the menu. I have to turn off the computer while booting so it goes there on next startup.

At first I thought it was because I used a wireless keyboard, but I tried it with a wired USB keyboard and it still doesn't work.

A:Can't use keyboard in "Safe Mode Screen"

It would be my feeling that if you are using a USB keyboard try a PS/2 keyoard.
Safe Mode loads fewer device drivers,
and USB wouldn't be supported.

Hello,
I figured it out but rather than remove this thread I left it up with this reply incase others might have this same problem. I hope my fix can help you too.

Reboot in safe mode, then simply open outlook and delete the offending email which is causing the lock up. Then reboot in normal mode and wala! fixed.

Just put this system together last night. all the drives (cd /HDD's) are from a previous computer but the mobo cpu and ram (kingston 333mhz 256mb) are new.

Entire system contents:

300w power supply (mitsumi "i think" came with case 4years ago)
asus a7v400 (onboard sound/vid/network)
AMD sempron 2400+ 1.67ghz (retail w/fan)
kingston 333mhz 256mb pc3200
no add in pci or agp
2 x 20GB HDD
2 x cd (one burner)
and floppy

the problem:

after installing everything I turned the computer on it turns on then off, and back on as others on this board have mentioned to be normal for this board, but then the it starts to post but doesnt even get past the "splash asus a7v400 screen" then it just hangs indefinetly! :suspiciou

on the "splash screen" it shows press tab to show post, and press alt+F2 to flash bios.. but niether gives any response... Ctrl Alt Del does reset the comp only to bring me back to the same spot... a little frustrated... thinking possible power supply unit, or even processor?

It does beep once (short) and then stops. and I've tried the FSB jumpers set to 133 and 100 mhz. both with the same result, I even tried clearing the CMOS with no change (not a big suprise since its never been used )

please help.

THANK YOU

A:Asus A7V400MX w/ sempron 2400+ Shows "asus" splash screen then Freeze.

common problems

well, first off. The beep you heard is natural. It means that the POST (power on self test) went through sucessfully! you might need to check the processor. Sometimes, processors can cause a bad instruction to activate, which causes your computer to freeze. The powersupply also could be an important factor. You should turn the computer on with the least amount of things. for example... (motherboard, 1 stick of ram, processor, harddrive, and the powersupply) doing this will limit what could be wrong and make it easier to troubleshoot. I would definetly check the processor, and even possibly the memory. hope this helps!

I was having problems with my Maple Story, so I un-installed and re-downloaded the program. However, when I tried to open the setup wizard, it gave me the error:

Error reading setup initialization file

I looked online for troubleshooting solutions, and I have so far found two options:

-Re-download because the error could be the result of a failed download that wasn't identified when the file was downloaded.

-Find and delete old files that could be stopping the file from being reaad properly.

I need help with the second solution, as in how I search for those files. Also, any other solutions for this problem would be much appreciated.

I am running Windows XP SP3, fully updated, on an Acer lap top PC.

I have several folders full of .mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. To do this I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

The two new columns appear, but the format of the "Duration" column appears to be "hours:minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03" for most .mp3's, when what I want to see is 'hours:minutes:seconds", e.g. "00:03:45".

This also happens for video files (.avi files), e.g. all my episodes of "Heroes" (sad, I know) have a duration of "00:42" instead of "00:42:xx".

Here are two pictures showing the problem with the .mp3's. The first is of Explorer showing the Duration as "Hours:Minutes":

The second picture is of the properties window of the first .mp3 in the list above:

I copied some .mp3 files to another (old) PC on my home network, and it displayed the duration field correctly:

Also, the properties window correctly shows the duration also:

I'm not the only person to have this problem. I received a private message from a member of another forum where I posted about this problem several weeks ago. That person also has the same problem with the duration field.

The tech guys on that forum were unable to find the source... Read more

I was just playing Fortnite yesterday and all of a sudden, my character was stuck running and I can't Alt+Tab or see the light glow when I press the Capslock button. Therefore, I restarted my laptop assuming that it will fix the issue. But it did not. Some keys are not outputting anything, some are inputting the letters "z", "/" and "\". Like when I press the letters asd, it will output of "z\". I tried uninstalling my keyboard laptop in the Device Manager but it didn't help at all. Leading to a conclusion that it may be a software/hardware problem. Or a virus, but I scanned throughout my laptop and didn't find anything. I am using the on screen keyboard at the moment. So my system has been rock solid since I built it. Below are my specs.

CPU = Q6600 Quad Core2 Duo @ 2.4Ghz (will OC)
Mobo = ASUS P5Q Pro
Video = PowerColor 1gb 4870 (AX4870 1GBD5-PPH)
PSU = Corsair TW750W
RAM = Kingston Hyper X 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500)
HD = 2 Maxtor 750GB (32mb Cache) in RAID 0
OS = Vista x64 Ultimate

Now, today, I'm playing Crysis, almost at the end, and it starts choking. Then, it freezes. I alt-tab back to the desktop, and see that my memory meter is pegged at 98%. Nothing is comming back, so instead of waiting it out, I hit the hard reset button.

Now, the system won't boot. Error is "No Operating System Found". I can post, but it looks like the RAID controller isn't coming up. I don't recal the 'F' key to hit (or when) to get to the Raid controller. Any advise? This just seems real odd.

I'm trying to fix my brother's computer after he opened a trojan attached to an email. The email was the one saying your credit card had been charged for airline tickets.

The computer is a Dell Dimension 3100 running Windows XP SP2.

The first problem is that after normal login there is a blue screen with a yellow window in the window with the message

"Warning! Spyware detected on your computer! Install an antivirus or spyware remover to clean your computer."

There are no icons visible. The only action I can perform is CTL-ALT-DEL to bring up the Windows Task Manager. I told my brother to start in Safe Mode from which he scanned the computer using AVG Free Edition which was installed before the infection. This did not fix the problem.

Starting Safe Mode I now get a black screen with Safe Mode in the corners and the operating system name at top. The blue login screen then comes up with Administrator and my brothers account. I click on Administrator and I get the same black screen as before with Safe Mode in the corners and the writing at top. My brothers account does the same. There are no icons or Start button visible.

Again, the only program I can bring up is the Windows Task Manager. Using that, I managed to install and run SmitfraudFix which was given as a solution to "Spyware detected" screen. After rebooting this did not fix the problem. I also installed SpyHunter 3.5.11 which found Zlob.Trojan, Rogue.AntivirusXP 2008 plus some other ... Read more

I have Windows 7 Ultimate x64

The other day I was afk while listening to loud music from my computer.
Suddenly the speakers began screaming in a high pitch and when I got to my computer it had frozen.
I tried to reboot it, but it simply froze at the Windows loading screen with the floating balls of light and the text: "Starting Windows".
I have also tried booting from the Windows 7 Installation DVD, but it freezes at the loading screen once again.

I then tried to use the Startup Repair Tool, only to find Windows freezing at the loading screen again.

When trying to reboot in safe mode, it freezes again, just after having loaded "disk.sys"

These are the things I have tried so far:
- I have run memory tests using Memtest86.
- I have run hard disk drive tests using SeaTools
- No errors were found.
- I removed the sound card from the MB, with same boot result.
*EDIT*
- I have reset the BIOS
- I booted with 2GB of RAM instead of my standard 4GB

Anyone who can think of other things I should try?

Suggest you run SFC. {Option 2}
You may need to run it at least 3 times.
Let us know the report at the end please.
